NCAA basketball postseason is here,, and we have a couple groups from last year that are ready to go for anyone wanting to play. Hef won the standard game last year, and I think that's DTVT that won the alternate points game.
You need an account with: https://www.cbssports.com/

Awesome. I'm in!

I'm in, let's hope I don't suck as much ass as I did last year.

I'm in. I honestly don't follow college basketball as much as I'd like to for most of the season, but I do follow my team, Michigan State, very closely. If it looks like I'm being a bit of a homer with my picks, well, I probably am.
-
CBSSports.com is being a bitch to me right now.
-
Brackets are open to be filled in now.
Interesting possibility of two 2nd round games being matchups of Big East teams. Apparently it wasn't a big deal to avoid that.
Big Ten got some real love on seeding.
-
Someone please tell me how UAB and VCU made the tournament... and not Virginia Tech?!?!?
Also, should we make a discussion thread about the tournament?

FTFY. Sorry, but Colorado got snubbed worse. They beat Kansas St. 3 times. KSt. spanked VT.

Dammit!!! Saint Marys got fucking snubbed. :censored

Done

The winning picks have been entered. :\
-
I'm in!
:corn
-
UAB, USC, and somewhat VCU are confusing picks. UAB did next to nothing to deserve a bid other than have a high RPI. USC is loaded with bad losses. VCU at least has some wins high quality wins against it's bad losses.
Dammit!!! Saint Marys got fucking snubbed. :censored
Disagree. With losses mounting, and one really bad loss, down the stretch they no longer looked particularly good.

Colorado probably was the worst snub. I don't like the comparison you mention for who should get in or not, but Virginia Tech really didn't have a great resume compared to Colorado.
-

They should have won more games.
-
A 25-8 record and the first conference win at Gonzaga in 10 years should have done it, I feel. I wish they would have just won the damn tourney so they wouldn't have to worry about it.
-
Off year for Gonzaga, though, so it wasn't even a top 50 RPI win. One bad loss and one absolutely horrendous loss since that win against Gonzaga really hurt their resume. Losing twice to Gonzaga since then probably didn't help, either.

I'll agree the loss to San Diego did them in.
-
Finally entered.
-
Just a reminder that brackets probably need to be filled in today.
Also, there is an option to copy your bracket from the standard game into the alternate scoring one. The standard might be the main one, but the alternate scoring game does produce a winner, too. :p The alternate scoring puts an emphasis on predicting the lower seeds more accurately. You get very little bang for predicting wins by top seeds until the late rounds, and if you can correctly predict a 13 seed to the Sweet 16 you get rewarded well. Still best to predict everything accurately, obviously, but it does try to reward being correct on harder picks.

Colorado played a terrible out of conference schedule which is the reason they are not in. I do think they are more worthy than UAB and Clemson though.
-
I'll give you UAB but not Clemson.

Brackets need to be filled in ASAP!

These games have been awesome so far today. Butler-ODU was so exciting and Taylor Battle just hit a clutch 3 for Penn State!
EDIT: Temple just won!

Louisville one and done

Louisville one and done
That one hurt. Bracket=busted.
(sidenote-GO BEARS, beat Colorado!!!)

Well, I was about 10 minutes late in filling out my bracket. Got one done on ESPN yesterday, though.
-
Guess who had Morehead St. beating Louisville.
:metal

Not me. :metal

That was literally the worst possible way for that game to end for Michigan State. And to see Kalin Lucas, one of the greatest players in program history, go out like that, is heartbreaking. >:(
-
So. Pitt vs. Butler.
-
So. Pitt vs. Butler.
Killed my brackets. Had Pitt in the final four. :(
-
My bracket is fucked.
Lots of really stupid, stupid plays happening at the end of these games. Kansas State's Jacob Pullen forced a 3 with three guys draped on him and got it stuffed, when his sharpshooting teammate was wide open not 5 feet away. And there was time to kick it back to him.
Henson for UNC made a brilliant defensive play near the end, then almost gave up the game TWICE with idiot plays in the final few seconds.
Only two I can think of at the moment, but there have been quite a few.
-J
-
Henson for UNC made a brilliant defensive play near the end, then almost gave up the game TWICE with idiot plays in the final few seconds.
Yes, I was quite upset with him. However, UNC survives and advances.

Thank god. I got them losing to Kansas in the finals.(sorry Hef, nothing but love for ya)
-
Well, that was a much closer game for Duke than it should've been!
-
I'm still doing pretty well with my brackets. My final four is still intact. My elite eight is still intact as a matter of fact. Barely with Duke and UNC playing like they did... but yep.
-
So. Pitt vs. Butler.
Killed my brackets. Had Pitt in the final four. :(
Well that was a mistake. Everyone knows Pitt chokes every year.
-
Kansas is the best team in the country. I've got them and OSU in the finals, but KU is so athletic, disciplined (except for Josh Selby who I'd have benched mid-season), and deep, that if they don't win it all with the team they've got, they should be ashamed.
-J
-
No, they really shouldn't be ashamed if they don't win. Single elimination tournaments packed full of good teams are brutal. No matter how good you are it's hard to string out 6 straight wins against top opponents, most of which happen to be on winning streaks against other top teams.
-
Agreed, "ashamed" was a stupid word to use. But whenever you've got the best team in the tournament, the expectations are high enough that it's going to be highly disappointing if you don't win it all, regardless of how tough it is to accomplish.
-J
-
Alright, Marquette!
-
What has two thumbs and put Marquette in the sweet 16?
That's right, this guy.
-
Nice call. I didn't even make that pick, and I'm a fan.
-
Is it just me, or are there a lot more down to the wire games this year. Seems like about 2/3rds of them go down to the last possession or two.
-

You mean with the exception of the ass pounding Notre Dame is taking right now?
-
But ND getting ass raped is still a thing of beauty.

You and I would get along famously. My favorite part of the tourney is when Duke gets knocked out, it's like getting a shiney new bicycle for Christmas.

The only think that would make a dook loss sweeter is if someone would take a lead pipe to Kzyakjsdgfy's skull after they lose. He's such a prick, I hope he retires so Bob Knight can keep the wins title. Knight is an asshole I can root for.

Kzyakjsdgfy's

No worries, I didn't have UNC making it that far! :lol I love them, and will be pulling for them, but they are extremely young (which really showed itself in the ACC Tournament), so I will be surprised if they can come up with the willpower to make it to the finals.
BTW, how about the Big Least Conference?
-
I just get sick of seeing and hearing all the bickering about the Big East. They did not do well in the tournament this year or last year... but so what? It doesn't mean they suck as a conference. They are large, and they are deep, but what they apparently are not is a conference carrying truly top flight teams.
The negativity surrounding these teams is saddening, if you ask me. An 11 seed team makes the Sweet 16 and you can hardly find a conversation involving them that doesn't immediately become about how the Big East sucks.
I hope Marquette beats UNC, but I don't expect it to happen since UNC is obviously a much better team. Frankly, I'm shocked Marquette is in the Sweet 16, but certainly thrilled. The odd feeling I get is that we're actually going to see a game where the general audience is cheering for a 2-seed over an 11-seed. ...and when Marquette loses to a team it should lose to all we're going to hear from people is how much more it proves Marquette and the Big East sucks.
I love sports, but the vile negativity that can start to emanate from fans is a real turn off. Conversation regarding the Big East is becoming one of those things.
-
^Part of the problem is that there's no frame of reference for comparing teams in different conferences other than at best a couple of games at the beginning of the season. The Big East looked great all year, but the fact is, each conference plays the vast majority of its games within itself, so it's impossible to say how a team will fare when pitted against top teams from other conferences.
-J
-
my bracket is in shambles as usual but at least kansas is rockin :metal
-
@j:
The Big East looked good during conference play largely because it actually did do well in nonconference. A good number of wins were scored against top teams as well as the bottom feeders scoring wins against eventual bubble teams. I think they've shown they're deep as a conference, but that shouldn't be translated as dominant,as so many seem to think it does.
I don't think the Big East is the best conference out there, but then again I have no idea which one is. I question the overall quality of the ACC even though it might have the best two programs in the nation. Perhaps the Big Ten or Big XII, I'm not sure. The Big East is one of the best, though, regardless of their failure at the tournament this year.
-
The other part of it is that it is a single elimination tournament. Does anybody think the 1983 NC St. team that beat Houston was the best team in the country that year? How about 1985 Villanova? Fact is that in a single elimination tournament, the underdogs are going to make a little noise. Combine that with the fact that when you are branded the best conference, you're likely to get everyone's best shot, just like dook takes everyones best shot as the defending champs.
Of the 8 Big East teams eliminated, 2 were eliminated by other Big East teams (Syracuse and Cincinnati), St. John's lost a significant player for the season in the BE tourney, Villanova has been in free fall, Pitt lost to last year's runner-up who were only seeded low because they started slow due to injuries, WV lost to a higher seed (#4 seed Kentucky) that a lot of people thought should have been a 3 seed, Georgetown lost their PG to a wrist injury before the tournament, which leaves sorry ass Notre Dame - and the eat ass so I'm not going to defend their pasting by a great defensive team in Florida St.
-
No excuses for Louisville, either! :lol What was that?

They were too busy making jokes about "Morehead State" to take the game seriously.

They are large, and they are deep, but what they apparently are not is a conference carrying truly top flight teams.
Look, you may be a Big East fan, but there is no way they deserved 11 teams to make the tournament. That was ridiculous, and it shows in looking at how many of them made the Sweet 16.
I've been a UNC fan all my life, and I am convinced that for the past several decades, the ACC has been consistently the toughest conference for basketball. Do we have down years? Of course - see this season, for example, when I thought that probably the Big 10 or Big 12 had the best season. But even in a down year, we have 3 teams in the Sweet 16.
If Big East fans don't want to hear crap about their lack of performance in the tournament, then they need to perform better in the tournament. That seems fairly simple.
But in the end, any gibes here on the forum are in good fun. And it's only sports, anyway, so there's no reason for anyone to get upset. After all, DoC isn't posting in this thread.
-
As you may or may not have read, I clearly stated I do not think the Big East is the best conference and that the ACC might have the best top of a league.
It got 11 teams in, which is equivalent to 7-8 from an 11 team conference like the Big Ten. This year was a bit of a fluke, it normally doesn't put in the highest percentage of teams compared to the other big conferences. Before this year 8/16 was the most, a 50% clip. It never would have landed this many if the bubble wasn't so weak this year. Not many Marquette fans even thought Marquette earned a bid, it's just that they compared well to a glutton of other teams that didn't really earn a bid.
-
On top of the standard point system after the first round. :metal

Actually, my last name is Dunn. I think I was drunk when I did that last year and was fucking around. (the Ron part is correct, but I go by R.J.)
-
TOX might be going to the Final Four.
-
UWGB is in the women's sweet sixteen! Go Green Bay!
-
Their only loss is to Marquette. :) Hopefully they can make the Final Four, but it's so hard to tell how good a team is that hasn't played many top opponents. Great season for them no matter what happens now, though.
-
I hate when my bracket says one team and my heart says the other team. I have UConn, but there is a part of me that wants to see San Diego St. win.
-
Dook is having the most epic collapse since the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Fuck Duke.

Fuck yeah!!! Later Duke!!!
Oh, and who was the fucking genius that had Arizona beating Duke to go to the Elite 8, that's right, yours truly. :metal

If dook played Notre Dame, I'd root for a tomahawk missle to blow the building up.
Thank goodness Wisconsin lost. They play a style of basketball that's uglier than a syphaltic hooker with rosatia and a cleft palate.
-
:lol :lol
I don't have as big of a problem with Notre Dame.
-
So I hadn't actually watched a BYU game until tonight, and thus hadn't seen Jimmer actually play outside of highlights.
I know he had an off-shooting night, which is gonna happen from time to time, but given the hype surrounding him, I was not at all impressed. The guy can obviously score, but he takes a ton of shots, and a lot of them are just plain stupid. He's pulling up for contested 30+ footers time and time again (he went three for FIFTEEN from 3 point range alone) when he's got the ability to get into the lane and create. Dumb.
Also he's a HORRIBLE defender.
Got nothing against him at all; hell I even picked BYU to upset Florida (mistakenly). He's just nowhere near the basketball god the sports media has made him out to be. Which I should have expected.

I've seen him play several times. He just had an off night. He really is an awesome offensive player, trust me.
-
Fair enough, others have told me that as well and I'm sure you're right. I probably shouldn't be judging his game based on one isolated performance. But to clarify, it was his poor decision making, not his missed shots, that left a bad taste in my mouth.

I've watched him a few times since his name kept popping up on sportscenter all the time , my knock is he forces alot of shots, his judgement at times makes me scratch my head, and you were correct earlier he plays almost no defense what so ever, so whats it all mean, he would fit right in with a majority of NBA teams right now
-
Thank goodness Wisconsin lost. They play a style of basketball that's uglier than a syphaltic hooker with rosatia and a cleft palate.
:lol
So what? Since Dick Bennett took this program over 10-15 years ago or so they have been winners with this not so pretty play every year since. Isn't that what counts? They usually play good basketball, that's something any basketball fan should be able to appreciate.
Between the mid 1940's and the mid 1990's I don't think Wisconsin finished in the top half of the Big Ten more than maybe once or twice, and no NCAA or NIT bids over that entire span. Stu Jackson brought a taste of success in 1994, but it wasn't until Dick Bennett and later Bo Ryan that they became considered a top program in the Big Ten. Neither have flashy teams, but you can't argue with their success.

There's nothing wrong with it, it's just that its a team I have no rooting interest in, so I'd rather see teams that play faster than frozen snail. I heard they tried showing that Wisconcin/Penn State game from the B10 championship to POWs and now the captors are up for war crimes charges of torture.
-
Look on the bright side, Bo Ryan's system is like a highly caffeinated version of what Dick Bennett had at Wisconsin.

Bo Ryan also looks like he could be a super-villian. Man, he looks pissed all the time and has a scowl constantly.

Pathetic by Marquette.

UNC puttin' in work!

HEELS
Although I must say that Marquette put up one of the most awful first halves of basketball I've ever seen.

Wow, good thing I won the brackets yesterday, I had Kansas taking it all. Kudos to VCU, the team that most of the nation said didn't belong in the tourney to begin with.

Interesting Final Four that's shaping up. One game of middling seeds from mid-major conferences and the other one of high seeds from major conferences.
-
Well, looks life I've pretty much sealed up the standard scoring, pay up bitches. :hat
I don't think you've locked up the win, yet. Until Connecticut is out you're in danger of losing.
-
You're right, I was looking at the correct, not the score.
-
I'm sad that UNC lost. I'm even more sad that they lost to Ken-fucking-tucky. But hey, they made it farther than I thought they would, so bully for them.
-

VCU played a very good game, but Kansas also had one of the worst performances I can ever recall seeing in college basketball. VCU literally did EVERYTHING better. If anybody's earned their spot in the Final Four, they have. They've gotta be feeling good; if they can beat KU, they can sure as hell take Butler.
-J

Kansas and UNC both lost today! Wow, Christmas came early for this Mizzou fan (I hate Kansas, and now hate UNC since Roy Williams is there). :tup :tup

If Butler wins, I win the standard scoring. If UConn wins, letters wins standard scoring. Either way, VT owns and will take the title and second place.
Wkiml (Bill) won the alternate scoring no matter what. Congrats on wresting the title from me

No shit really? I thought I was way behind in the standard scoring. :lol

Go Butler!

I just want to see an 8 seed win it all. I can see all the suits from the majors calling for a BCS system for B-ball all ready. Too bad VCU lost, that would have implemted it immediatly.

Sorry to rain on your parade folks but UCONN WILL BE NATIONAL CHAMPS, BABY!!!!!!! :metal :metal :metal
MEN AND WOMEN!
UCONN RULES!!!! :metal :metal :metal
-
No shit really? I thought I was way behind in the standard scoring. :lol
In the early rounds It has less to do with where you currently stand in points and more with what your potential point total is. Points double each round, so picking the champion correctly is the same point total as picking every game correct in the first round.
That's partly why I like alternative point systems, there's too much weight on picking the champion. It makes the earlier rounds almost just tiebreakers.
-
Sorry to rain on your parade folks but UCONN WILL BE NATIONAL CHAMPS, BABY!!!!!!! :metal :metal :metal

I'd expect a good college team to shoot better than 18% against a GOOD NBA team. That game was just painful to watch, it's like Butler was shooting at smaller than regulation hoops like they use at carnivals.

i go to uconn. this place is absolutely nuts right now. no cars or fires like 2004 but still amazing to see this many people going completely nuts

Truly amazing run UCONN has just accomplished, from the 5 games in 5 days to win the Big East championship, all the way through the tournament to be champs. It was on of the most phenomenal stretches I've ever seen in all of sports. The 9th seed in the Big East tournament!
As far as Butler goes, what an awful night they had. They were flat out bad. I have never seen a team shoot so badly.
Thank you Butler for saving your best for last.
