I don’t have last.fm so my best idea for how to give you an idea of my favourite bands is this. In my Top 20 Prog bands list, the list was as follows:

20. Cardiacs
19. Tool
18. Jethro Tull
17. Anglagard
16. The Mars Volta
15. Harmonium
14. Peter Gabriel
13. Psychotic Waltz
12. King Crimson
11. Kayo Dot
10. Gong
9. Gentle Giant
8. Yes
7. Can
6. Porcupine Tree
5. Pink Floyd
4. Genesis
3. Dream Theater
2. Magma
1. Van der Graaf Generator

Here were my honourable mentions (plus a few I missed at the time):
Amon Duul II
Marillion
Pain Of Salvation
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Weidorje
Koenjihyakkei
Henry Cow
Neu!
Caravan
Bondage Fruit
Soft Machine
IEM
Eloy
Sieges Even
Hawkwind
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Ash Ra Tempel
Minds Eye
Popol Vuh
Vanden Plas
Agalloch
Ruins
maudlin of the Well
The Flower Kings
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Hatfield and the North
National Health
Sigur Ros

Bands that would’ve been there should I have made the list earlier are:
Birds and Buildings
Jean Louis
Big Big Train
Oceansize
Opeth
Unexpect

Other prog bands I like:
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Transatlantic
I.Q.
Pendragon
Ozric Tentacles
Atomic Rooster

There may be more, but I don’t feel like remembering them. It'd be pretty hard. :P

Of non-prog and jazz, my favourite bands are:
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Herbie Hancock
Miles Davis
Return to Forever
Radiohead
System of a Down
Pantera
Slayer
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Buckethead (I actually think he's prog, but so many disagree so I'll stick him here)
Paul Gilbert
Down
At the Drive-In
The Bouncing Souls

What I like:
Well you all know how proggy I am. My other favourite genres are post-rock, math-rock, avant-garde, RIO, krautrock, psychedelia, and jazz. I’ll even enjoy pop if there’s something different and original about it.

I'm also a metalhead. :metal I can be kinda picky with growling/barking vocals, so be careful with usage of those. I also loves me some good riffs!

Weirdness is a HUGE plus for me. Nothing is too weird for me, so taking advantage of that might be good. :) Just as long as it's weird but still good.

Instrumental virtuosity always helps too.

I'm not very picky with vocals (besides growls/barks/screams), so if you think a song may have unappealing vocals don't worry about it, I can probably look past it.

What I hate:
I cannot stand unoriginality. :P I'm usually not a fan of screams, unless used in an appropriate climactic fashion. I'm also not much of a fan of these genres:
Rap
Hip-hop
Country
Reggae

I would say punk, but I have my exceptions.

Time limit: Songs may be up to 15 minutes in length.

Round 1: I figured I'd start things off with a round dedicated to long intros. A long intro can be any song that takes a long time until the vocals show up, or just a long time until the song really gets going. Examples are Octavarium and Shine On You Crazy Diamond (although they don't have to be THAT long. ;) ). You have 2 days.

P.S. If my introduction sucks too much, I'll be happy to answer questions. As long as they aren't too specific. I don't wanna be too specific about my tastes to make sure there is more risk/excitement to things. ;)

Cool.  Is the "non-prog" theme still on?  My submissions will probably be along those lines regardless, but I was just wondering...

Nope. Prog is allowed, I'm just warning you all that I know quite a bit of prog, so aiming for the obscure is recommended.

I would assume so.

As for alphabetising, just do a Ctrl+F search.

X - Spock's Beard
Aquarius - Haken
s/t - Il Tempio delle Clessidre
Creation de l'universe - Xing Sa
Clivages - Univers Zero

In the Wake of Evolution - Kaipa

Title: Re: LLTWM's Song Roulette - Round 1 gogogogogogogo
Post by: LieLowTheWantedMan on March 11, 2011, 03:16:31 PM
Alright. This was incredibly hard for me as all these songs were pretty damned good. If you got a low rank, please do not be discouraged. It was quite painful to rank some songs as low as they were.

Best song (5 points):

zxlkho: Flying Whales - Gojira

Oh my god this song was amazing. Gojira has been on my "bands to check out" list for quite a long time, and I could not have asked for a better introduction. The intro was killer and really set the mood well for this track. The growls didn't turn me off of the song at all and I love those djenty riffs. :metal Amazing song, and I'll definitely be checking out Gojira further soon enough.

High tier (4 points):

ariich: Supercrush! - Devin Townsend

The intro wasn't very long, but neither was the song, so it works. Anyways, my only previous experience with Devy is Ziltoid the Omniscient, a killer album. The intro of this song left me thinking The Mirror was starting up. :lol The melodies in this song really stuck with me I gotta say, and the female vocals were really good. Devy is an awesome vocalist as always, and this song really was just awesome.

jsem: Kings and Queens - Renaissance

I am quite familiar with Renaissance, but I actually haven't listened to them in about a year. I do not own the album this song is on, but damn this is a great song. The folkiness is really a great touch and I love the vocals. The instrumental section was pretty killer too. Anyways, all-around great selection, and really there are no dull moments in this one.

Middle tier (3 points):

dtismajesty: 30:55 - Olafur Arnalds

My favourite part about this song is just the way it progresses. From the soft notes on the piano all the way into string sections at whatnot, it's a really tasty composition, and is really elegant in it's simplicity. I really like this mixture of classical and post-rock. Overall great song.

DTVT: Secrets of Centuries - Clockwork

Pretty strong shades of Fates Warning here. This song was pretty epic right from the getgo. Some nice riffs, and some really good guitarwork all around are present here. The singer is pretty good too. Really nice prog metal song.

Medium low tier (2 points):

The King In Crimson: Lazy - Deep Purple

I'll admit I'm not a Deep Purple fan at all, but this song impressed me. The intro was really nice and fun to listen to. After the vocals came in, it wasn't as impressive unfortunately. But that intro was really nice.

TheVoxyn: Dance Dance Dance - 65daysofstatic

I'm an electronic newb, really. This song wasn't bad though. The last minute was pretty killer I think, and it was pretty fun to listen to. A simple song really, not much to say.

Bottom (1 point):

Gorille85: Different Worlds - The Pineapple Thief

Alright, I do not dislike this song at all. In fact, it's pretty good and I liked the intro quite a bit. But the one problem I had is that I couldn't help but feel it should've been shorter. That's really the only problem though, as overall it was a good song, and I really like this bands sound. Don't let this discourage you though, as knowing your amazing taste, you will most definitely do better later on. :) But for now, sorry man. :(

Stats:
zxlkho: 5
ariich/YtseBitsySpider: 4
jsem: 4
dtismajesty: 3
DTVT: 3
The King In Crimson: 2
TheVoxyn: 2
Gorille85: 1

Round 2: I'm in a really saxy mood today, so this round will be somewhat based on that. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find me a song that makes usage of any wind/brass instrument. Flutes, saxophones, tubas, clarinets, kazoos, vuvuzelas, whatever. Just gimme something with an instrument you blow into. :D It doesn't necessarily have to play a leading role, but it should at least be noticably involved.

Oh yeah, I must have missed the word "long" for that round, because I was just thinking good intros generally. :lol Oh well, glad you dug it so much, it's a friggin' amazing song! :D

For this round, presumably you're thinking rock/metal that utilises a wind instrument, rather than anything (jazz would be easy, but probably cheating. :P) ??

Anything goes really.

Jazz would be easy to find yes, but I tend to be kinda picky towards jazz. ;)

Best song (5 points):

DTVT: Family Jewels - Magellan

I've heard talk about these guys on PA before, but haven't checked them out yet. My first comment is that guy sure can play flute. That flute solo was fuckin awesome. The way this song built up too it never let my attention waiver for a second. These guys have definitely landed on my bands to hear more of list.  :tup

High tier(4 points):

dtismajesty: The Nebbish Route/Falling Awake - Shpongle

:lol @ the Ned Flanders thing at the very beginning. Anyways, this song was pretty wacky for sure. I don't know what it was about this one, but it was captivating for sure. The Nebbish Route was weird and crazy while Falling Awake made for a nice closing. Great electronic song, will hear more from these guys.

Gorille85: Lost in Moments - Ulver
It took me quite a while to decide which got the 4 between you and ariich, but this one narrowly won. That sax by the beginning was some of the darkest sounding saxophone work I've ever heard. It gave me some major chills. The atmosphere this song sets is amazing. Great job of making up for the first round.

Middle Tier(3 points):

ariich: Silent Film - Dog Fashion Disco

I don't know what the hell this was but it kicked ass. :lol This song was short and, as I love, insane. Great job utilising my love of the weird. I thought the vocals were pretty cool too and the use of the brass/wind criteria here was great.

TheVoxyn: Dragon Roost Island - Koji Kondo

Video game music?  Really? :lol Well I gotta say the flute here was pretty great. I do love video game music and this song is awesome. I have yet to play Wind Waker, but this really is the perfect island music just from listening to it. Nice one.

Medium low tier (2 points):

zxlkho: Left Out - Riverside

Alright, it lost a bit for it's lack of wind/brass work, but it was a good song. :P Riverside is one of those bands I listened to a few songs of and forgot about, despite enjoying them. This song was pretty cool though. A few parts here and there dragged on a bit, but I gotta say... DAT ORGAN SOLO. :metal

The King in Crimson: Promised Land - Queensryche

All I've heard from Queensryche is the famous Operation: Mindcrime, which completely failed to impress me. This song wasn't bad though. It didn't sound as generic 80s metal as lots of Mindcrime came off as to me and it definitely had it's charms. Wasn't amazing, but by no means is it bad.

Bottom Tier (1 point):

jsem: School - Supertramp

Sorry man. :( All I've heard from Supertramp was a few radio songs, which were okay. This song too, was okay. I did like when the band came in quite a bit though, but this song really wasn't that impressive. Sorry.

Rankings:
DTVT: 8
ariich/YtseBitsySpider: 7
zxlkho: 7
dtismajesty: 7
Gorille85: 5
jsem: 5
TheVoxyn: 5
The King in Crimson: 4

Round 3:
I need cheering up. Simple round: send me a happy song. It doesn't have to be super in-your-face happy, but it should have at least a slight happy/cheery/optimistic mood to it.

Nothing wrong with sending the same artist. If it's the same song, the person running the roulette should keep it for the first person and ask the second person re-submit, but if it's a different song by the same artist, that should be fine.

By the way, I admire you guys for not being afraid to send some more mainstream sounding songs. :)

Best song(5 points):

TheVoxyn: Anathema - Dreaming Light

I don't know what to say except this song is really awesome. I've been recommended Anathema many times but had never actually gotten anything from them, but wow this is great. The singer is really awesome and it has that definite uplifting vibe to it. It was really what was on my mind when making this round. Congrats. :tup

High tier(4 points):

The King In Crimson: Banana Man - Tally Hall

:rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
Alright enough with the laughs, but I gotta say you took a big risk this round, and it paid off. Despite the fact both the song and music video are completely insane and kinda stupid, I actually thought this song kicked major ass (probably because of the insanity and stupidity). But now it's probably gonna be stuck in my head for quite a while. :P

ariich: BT - Good Morning Kaia

This song started out pretty depressing, but it got the upliftingness later on. This song was absolutely gorgeous and accompanied with the video is even better. It really is an uplifting one, great job. :tup

Middle Tier(3 points):

jsem: A.C.T - The Effect

Yeah, you were right. This song is rather cheesy. But it didn't bother me because I really liked the song. The verses had a great sort of vibe to it (which for some reason reminded me of I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)) and this song was overall a fun listen. :)

zxlkho: dredg - Bug Eyes

Yeah, the lyrics here definitely don't match up to the mood of the song itself. :lol But still, great song. Another band I've heard of but never gotten around to. This song had a nice accessibility to it and overall I enjoyed it. :)

Medium Low Tier(2 points):

DTVT: Fulfej - Work in this Universe

Another accessible one. The choice here was incredibly difficult between this one and Bug Eyes. Anyways, this one definitely had optimistic lyrics and the vibe too. I like the chorus, thought it was pretty great. Overall a great song, and I feel bad for only giving it 2 points.

Gorille85: Jonsi - Go Do

Another song I wish I could've given more. Anyway, my thoughts on the link were "Jonsi? Didn't know he had a solo career." I then opened the link and said "NNNNOOOOOOO!!!" because I recognized it from a Ford Explorer commercial. :lol It annoyed me in the commercial, but as a whole this song ain't half bad at all. It probably is the happiest song sent this round, and it was pretty good.

Bottom tier(1 point):

dtismajesty: Gregory and the Hawk - Doubtful

Alright this song wasn't bad. I liked the guitar quite a bit and she had a great voice (except I thought it sounded kinda awkward how her voice jerks up in the chorus). It just didn't really work for me. :( Still, it wasn't a bad song, it just didn't give me all that much enjoyment. Sorry. :(

Rankings:

ariich/YBS - 11
The Voxyn - 10
zxlkho - 10
DTVT - 10
dtismajesty - 8
The King in Crimson - 8
jsem - 8
Gorille85 - 7

Round 4 theme:
Alright here's a simple one. Just... instrumental. I'm not gonna restrain you much, I'll let you open your minds a bit. Just send me any instrumental.

:D Glad you liked it so much! Yeah the opening piano stuff is melancholy, but I think that really adds to why it is so uplifting by the end, because of the journey it takes you on. It always makes me smile. :)

I'm not doing well in this roulette. :sadpanda:
Dude, you're 3 points behind the top half, it's all pretty close so don't sweat it.

Jonsi was indeed the artist dtismajesty and I were thinking about sending :p.

Oh god this was a hard round to rank. Every song here was good, so if you get rated low, your song was still good. :(

Best song(5 points):

DTVT: Tears of Sahara - Tony MacAlpine

Woah. This is one epic guitar song. :o Anyways, this song was pretty much one big guitar solo, and holy christ it was awesome. :metal He plays with such skill and feel in this one it's just such a great listen. The main melody is really epic too. Awesome song.

High tier(4 points):

zxlkho: The Crusade - Trivium

:metal :metal This song had some really great riffs in it. Now as far as I know, Trivium isn't a prog band, but this was a pretty proggy song. Lots of mad skillz in this one too to go along with those br00tal riffs. Love it. :metal

Gorille85: Royksopp Forever - Royksopp

Damn, this song has a really cool feel to it. I see from the comments it must be on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but I never noticed it. Too bad I didn't, cause this song is awesome. Really simple compared to the other two songs, but really awesome.

Middle tier (3 points):

jsem: I Remember Stevie - Andy Timmons

So this is another sort of solo song like Tears of Sahara. It's not really as epic and awesome, but it's still a great listen from a pretty great guitar player, or at least it seems. I've never heard this guy before, but he seems pretty awesome. I'll have to check out more of him.

dtismajesty: Ballad 4 (Part 1) - Tosca Tango Orchestra

This song was pretty awesome. Those strings really made this song for me, and there were lots of amazing melodies flying around that made me enjoy this one. I found it a little less interesting towards the end, but still, awesome. :)

Medium Low tier(2 points):

ariich: Hyperventilate - Frost*

I love the way the band came in on this one. Pretty awesome. Anyways, I know little Frost* and I know that they broke up recently, which is really sad. This song was pretty great with lots of cool melodies, but I feel it could be 2 minutes shorter.

The King in Crimson: Medicine Wheel - Between the Buried and Me

Good song. I've only listened to Colors from these guys, which was a decent album, and this song was pretty good. I find it lacked something truly awesome in it though. Still, it was a good song.

Bottom tier (1 point):

TheVoxyn: The Immaculate Misconception - Antimatter

Arrgh, I really wanted to rate this one higher, but I feel it went around the same sort of feel and type of melody for a bit too long. :( It was actually a really cool song overall, but it lost my interest after a bit.

Rankings:
DTVT: 15 points
zxlkho: 14 points
ariich/YBS: 13 points
Gorille85: 11 points
TheVoxyn: 11 points
jsem: 11 points
dtismajesty: 11 points
The King In Crimson: 10 points

Round 5:

This'll be an open round. Send whatever you want.

Best song (5 points:)

Gorille85: Vinushka - Dir en Grey

Wow, this song was really awesome. :metal The singer was really cool, and I loved the verses. But oh my god, DAT MIDDLE SECTION. :metal So awesome! Long story short, I'm checking out this band ASAP. This is really, really cool stuff.

High tier (4 points):

The King in Crimson: Skeksis - Strapping Young Land

This is pretty much just the perfect metal song. The riffs are really cool. The vocals are, of course, awesome. This was just an all around really fun listen. Not much to say but this was pretty damned awesome. :metal

dtismajesty: Father Father - Susanne Sundfor

This song was so beautifully haunting, it's impossible for me not to love it. The singer (Susanne I assume) is absolutely amazing, and she really brings out the haunting atmosphere of this song to the nth degree. Short song, but damn it was awesome.

Middle tier (3 points):

jsem: My Favourite Things - John Coltrane

I really feel this song deserves more points, but due to the infinite awesomeness of the first 3, it goes here. Anyways, this is really the ultimate chill jazz song. It just made me feel so relaxed when I listened to it and it didn't lose my attention for a second. He really incorporates the main melody well too. Great song. :hat (That's the first time I've ever used that emoticon I think :lol)

TheVoxyn: Still Counting - Volbeat

I immediately thought that the singer was awesome here. I love unique singers, and this guy really stands out. This song is quite accessible too, which definitely worked to it's advantage in this case. The lyrics were kinda odd in places, but hey I enjoy it! :lol

Medium low tier(2 points):

zxlkho: 1878 - The Dear Hunter

Another song that really deserves more points, but dat competition! Oh well, I guess an open round is pretty much asking for it. Anyways, like you said, the singer is great here. The chorus made me feel as if I've heard this somewhere before, but I'm not sure of it. It is a great chorus. Love the organ solo too. :)

DTVT: Travels to the Night - Mystery

Ahh, yes I do recognize the singer from Yes. Anyways, this song definitely has some Yes influence to it, and it really is great. I feel it could have benefited from being shortened slightly, but it was still a really great song. And like in the above song, I believe it deserves more. I will check out this band more.

Bottom tier (1 point):

ariich: Kinetic - Arcturus

:( This really was a very good song! It's competition was so tough though. It had some really, really cool parts and then other parts that didn't really click. But overall, it was great, and the vocalist was really good. I'll still be checking out this album, as I feel I enjoyed this song enough. :)

Rankings:
DTVT: 17
zxlkho: 16
Gorille85: 16
dtismajesty: 15
ariich/YBS: 14
The King In Crimson: 14
TheVoxyn: 14
jsem: 14

Round 6:
Damn this is a really even roulette. Which calls for a really even song! :D In other words, I would like a song that balances heavy and soft parts. :)

I heard somewhere these guys were pretty Tool-influenced, and I can definitely see it. Anyways this song was incredibly awesome. It had some really cool-sounding riffs like Tool, and while the singer is no Maynard, he got the job done. Really great song. :tup

High tier (4 points):

DTVT: Silent Waters - Amorphis

This was a pretty simple song, but it was sweet. I thought the singer was really cool and this song used it's kind of accessible sound really well. The guitar I thought was pretty cool and this song was really easy to get into. Great one. :)

Gorille85: Gathering Fingers - Stolen Babies

This song was pretty odd, which of course is usually a win for me. The girl had a pretty creepy voice in the quiet parts and the screams were utilised nicely. It also shifted quite a bit and didn't lose my attention once it got loud.

Medium tier (3 points):

TheVoxyn: Shadows - God Is An Astronaut

God Is An Astronaut is a band I keep forgetting to check out. Anyways, this is some post-rock greatness, and I really love the way the drums were used to set the mood for this song. Both the loud and quiet parts were equally awesome.

zxlkho: Ecailles De Lune (Part II) - Alcest

This song would have scored a lot higher, but I didn't really like the vocals much and the production seemed a bit odd to me for some reason (even with the quality pushed up). But aside from that, this song was pretty impeccable. It was structured well and I just got lots of enjoyment out of it as a whole.

Medium low tier: (2 points):

jsem: Concerto for Orchestra Mvt 1 - Bela Bartok

Do not be discouraged. The fact this scored kind of low is probably due to the fact I am a huge classical noob and haven't really gained the appreciation for the genre much yet. But I can say that the later parts of the song kicked copious amounts of ass. The earlier part of the song didn't fully click though. The loud parts were also used very well.

dtismajesty: Comforting Sounds - Mew

Okay so the vocalist wasn't that great I'll say, but I probably just need to get used to him. Other than that, I can totally see why these guys are so beloved on this forum. The crescendo in this song was used to great effect, and I'm sure if I digest the vocalist I would like these guys a lot more. So I'll have to check out more.

Bottom tier (1 point):

The King In Crimson: Widower - The Dillinger Escape Plan

Truly sorry. :( The fact is, the quiet parts in this song were beautiful, but the louder parts just left me cold. I just couldn't get into them. Still, those quiet ones were pretty damned awesome.

Ranking:

DTVT: 21
Gorille85: 20
ariich: 19
zxlkho: 19
dtismajesty: 17
TheVoxyn: 17
jsem: 16
The King In Crimson: 15

Round 7:

This round will be very hard for me to choose the rankings for I can tell, but send me something really, really weird. :)

I figured you wouldn't like the vocals.  Many people seem put off by them.  Given, I have no idea whatsoever why anyone wouldn't like them, but I had a feeling it would be the case.  I still urge you to try and listen to more Mew and get into them.  Hell, in a few months we will be laughing over this and you'll feel ashamed for giving them a two.   :P

Yeah, probably. :lol I'm sure I'll get used to him, I had the same problem with Thom Yorke of Radiohead at first, now they're a favourite of mine.

Post by: LieLowTheWantedMan on March 31, 2011, 08:29:01 PM
Here are your precious results. :P Hard to score as all the songs were really cool.

Best song (5 points):

The King In Crimson: Carousel - Mr. Bungle

Oh my god, this makes me regret putting off listening to Mr. Bungle for so long! Well Mike Patton is from Faith No More isn't he? I never liked his voice with them, but fuck is he cool as hell here! He really shows versatility and chops and he really takes this song to a whole new level. I'm listening to more of these guys pronto.

High tier (4 points):

zxlkho: 9 to 5 at the Morgue - Dog Fashion Disco

This song was delicious. I don't really know of a better way to describe it, and I don't know why that word comes to mind. The vocals are awesome and the lyrics are really cool I thought. I really enjoyed it. :)

ariich: Jolson and Jones - Scott Walker

Oh god you weren't kidding when you were saying how screwed up this is. :lol This song is malicious. It really had a creepy atmosphere and the donkey noises really added to the song. I do think it could've been shortened just a tad, but oh god this is the epitome of creepy.

Medium tier (3 points):

dtismajesty: Suit Fugue (Dance of the A&R Men) - Kevin Gilbert

:rollin :rollin This song was so hilariously awesome. I love me a good fugue and the hilarious lyrics of this one made it such a fun listen. It was a short one, but it was good for a quick laugh.

Gorille85: Nearly Dead Bat Makeup - Pin-Up Went Down

Freaky song man. I really loved the woman (women?) singing in this one and she had a really freaky and versatile voice. They were kinda Unexpect-ish in a way which is always a plus. Really cool song.

Medium low tier (2 points):

DTVT: Halo Dies (The Wrath of God) - Orphaned Land

I know I've heard of these guys somewhere before. This was pretty damned good. While this wasn't exactly weird, it was quite unique. The vocals were really awesome and they're really different from most metal I've heard.

jsem: Kaizers Orchestra - Dr. Mowinckel

Was actually a pretty good song. Kinda creepy in a way. I liked the percussion in this one, sounds like he's banging on sheet metal or something. The vocals sounded really cool too. It was a pretty simple song really.

Bottom tier (1 point):

TheVoxyn: Caravan - Efterklang

The weirdest part of this one was the music video. It was pretty insane. :| But overall, the song was okay. Not really much seemed to happen though and I don't know it wasn't amazing. Still it wasn't bad in any sense and is pretty cool paired up with that creepy video.

Rankings:

DTVT: 23
Gorille85: 23
ariich/YBS: 23
zxlkho: 23
The King In Crimson: 20
dtismajesty: 20
TheVoxyn: 18
jsem: 18

Round 8:
The third last round of my roulette. And boy, this ones a close one. :lol What I would like is a song that builds up. It doesn't have to be super-duper epic, but it should have some sort of build up to it. :)

Here are the long-awaited results.
Best song (5 points):

jsem: The Planets: Mars, the Bringer of War - Gustav Holst

As I said a while ago, I'm a noob to classical music. And oh my god this was just beyond epic. :hefdaddy This had one of the absolute coolest uses of 5/4 time I've heard in my life and the build up was just droolworthy. This was definitely what I was looking for.

High tier: (4 points):

DTVT: Sleep and Dream - Battle of Mice

I really liked the singers voice here. She had a weird, sort of unique feel to her voice which really added to this song. The quieter parts she really succeeded in setting the mood for and she alone made this song a great one. The lyrics were pretty weird, which is a plus for me of course. :)

TheVoxyn: The Battle to Heaven - Mono

Never heard of these guys before, but this is why I love post-rock. They make you wait for their build-up, but oh boy is it worth it. The repeating melody in this one set the perfect mood and the build-up was very nice. Awesome song.

Medium tier (3 points):

ariich: Keep Breathing - Redemption

I'm pretty sure I've heard something from these guys before. Anyway, what can I say but it's just an awesome, epic prog metal song. The build up is gradual and effective. The vocalist is very nice, and I like the whole band in this one.

Gorille85: Pour More Oil - Her Name Is Calla

This song was beautiful. The build-up was really awesome, too. Another band I've never heard word of before, but I really don't understand why, as this is some really awesome music. I really liked the vocalist here too. Great song.

Medium low tier (2 points):

dtismajesty: Hesitation Waltz - Demians

Pretty damned good song. I've heard of Demians quite a bit, but never got anything from them. There's some pretty good music going on here and the build-up was also really nice. I liked the vocals as well.

zxlkho: My Debt to You - The Pineapple Thief

Yeah, so, this song was nice. As expected, they have their Radiohead and PT influences and are a nice, accessible, alt-ish prog band. This was a pretty good song, and I've always admired this style, although sometimes it works more than others.

Bottom tier (1 point):

The King in Crimson: Wake Up the Dead - The Pineapple Thief

So this one is a lot like My Debt to You in the things that make it work. Nice song, typical of their style, but I felt My Debt to You just worked better. It's funny, I've been sent 3 songs from these guys this roulette, which all I thought were okay. Yet I love the album Little Man, which I own. Bad luck I guess. Sorry guys.

DTVT: 27
Gorille85: 26
ariich/YBS: 26
zxlkho: 25

dtismajesty: 22

Best song (5 points):
jsem: Dodge the Dodo - Esbjorn Svensson Trio

You're on a roll! :D Anyways, yes the drumming was awesome. It was cool sounding technically while also working as a great moodsetter for the song. The piano was great, and this song just sort of entranced me. Awesome. :)

High tier (4 points):
zxlkho: Geek USA - The Smashing Pumpkins

So I like the Pumpkins. Never heard this before though, and it was really really good. The drumming was indeed awesome and I really liked the guitar solo as well. The singer (always forget his name. His last name is Corgan, right?) I've always liked too.

The King In Crimson: Blood and Thunder - Mastodon

Okay I've heard this song once or twice. I also used it in Numbers' roulette because my friend was listening to it with me present and I thought it'd be a good send. Anyways, I'll let it slide. This is a really good song, and I've never realized how awesome the drumming was until now. It also has a really cool riff, which I always loved.

Medium tier (3 points):
DTVT: Dark Corners: Bozzio Levin Stevens

I can't believe I've never heard of these guys, as I recognize two of the members. Anyways, this song probably had my favourite drumming of the sent songs. Seriously, what a fun as hell listen. This is some great jazzyness, and I'll have to listen to them more often.

dtismajesty: Above - Intronaut

Probably second best by judging the drumming. The music is really good too. Yet another band I've been meaning to check out for quite some time now. This song got so good towards the end.

Medium low tier: (2 points)

Gorille85: Music is Math - Boards of Canada

I still need to digest the whole of the electronic genre I think. Still, this song was great. The drumming was used very atmospherically here, so it works really well with the song.

ariich: Spiral - Bozzio Levin Stevens

Another song by these guys. It was the guitar that truly made this song, but the drumming worked too. A lot more calm then the other BLS song, but also good.

Bottom tier (1 point):
TheVoxyn: My Twin - Katatonia

So this song had a pretty good chorus I think. I like the singer too. But the verses didn't really stick with me at all. Sorry. :(

DTVT: 30
zxlkho: 29
jsem: 28
Gorille85: 28
ariich/YBS: 28
dtismajesty: 25
The King In Crimson: 25

FINAL ROUND:
Alright, last round. :) As I started this game with long intros, this round is dedicated to great outros! Not long, but awesome! :D Lets go out with a bang.

Sent.  It just happens one of my favorite songs has a massive, groovy outro.  It's certainly different though...hopefully its good enough to maintain my lead.

This is killing me, I only have one song in mind - but it's so cheesy.

Edit: General question for this round, how important is the outro. Because this outro is unbelievably awesome, but the rest of the song is unbelievably cheesy.. lol (one could argue that the outro is also rather cheesy, just not as cheesy)

Sorry guys. Been kinda preoccupied with the Easter insanity in my family (which for some reason continues even now) so I haven't had much song time. They'll be up tomorrow, promise.

Best song (5 points):

TheVoxyn: Ghost - Neutral Milk Hotel

You know, the funny thing about this one is I'm not sure why I loved it so much. It seemed so strangely captivating and fun to listen to. The outro wasn't anything huge and bombastic, but it worked really well to close the song. So I enjoyed it greatly.

High tier (4 points):

zxlkho: A Simple Mistake - Anathema

Yeah, this song was really beautiful. Had a really uplifting vibe to it and the outro was definitely amazing. Probably my favourite outro of the songs.

DTVT: The Siren of the Woods - Therion

The first thing I thought when the vocals came in was how unique and cool this was. This whole song had a sort of ancient, mystic feel to it and it was really enchanting. Haven't heard any band like this before, I'll have to check these guys out.

Medium Tier (3 points):

dtismajesty: The Light and the Glass - Coheed and Cambria

Haven't checked out much Coheed before, but this was a really great song with a really great outro. I usually don't like Claudio very much, but I thought he worked amazingly in this song. Great send. :)

ariich/YBS: Eternally, Pt. 2 - Karmakanic

This song had a kind of old feel to it too, I feel. Yet a bit differently then DTVT's send. A very good song, and a very good outro. I liked the vocalist a lot too! ;)

Medium low tier (2 points):

The King In Crimson: The Prophets Song - Queen

Queen is incredibly hit or miss for me. This one was pretty good, but I feel the harmony section overstayed it's welcome a bit. Still, it was a pretty good song.

jsem: Rosanna - Toto

Yeah, I didn't really like the content of this song. :P But...DAT SOLO! :hefdaddy It made up for some of the songs content for sure. All and all, okay song, but amazing solo!

Bottom tier (1 point):
Gorille85: Closer - Nine Inch Nails

Hmm so this is the song my friend kept quoting. Anyways, yeah it's not really my type. :P Sorry. NIN is a decent band, but I didn't really like this song.

Final Rankings:

DTVT: 34
zxlkho: 33
ariich/YBS: 31
jsem: 30
Gorille85: 29
TheVoxyn: 28
dtismajesty: 28
The King In Crimson: 27

And the winner is:DTVT!!!

Alright and to close. Well, my favourite song this roulette is a tie between:
Vinushka - Dir En Grey (sent by Gorille85)
Carousel - Mr. Bungle (sent by The King In Crimson)

So I definitely got bands to check out. Thanks a bunch guys, you all sent some really amazing stuff, and severely added to my already extremely long list of stuff to check out. :lol

Woot, my second win!  I love Therion, and the live album "Gothic Live" is one of the best concert DVDs I've seen.  I don't understand why they aren't more popular here.  But I'm glad you liked them and would love to guide you through their discography.

Sounds good. What would you say is the best album to start with?
Title: Re: LLTWM's Song Roulette - Game Over

Everything from Theli on is worth getting eventually, but I would say start with Theli is a good starting point, and Secrets of the Runes is another good one from the "single singer era".  They went to multiple singers lately, and their new album "Sitra Ahra" is very good.  I would probably go in order: Theli, Sitra Ahra, Secrets of the Runes, Deggial, Gothic Kaballah, Vovin, then Sirius B/Lemuria (sold as a double album).  I don't know if I'd call that my definitive album ranking, but it would allow you to hear how their sound has developed over time without seeing the progression.  Of course, chronological order worked really well for me, but then again I didn't have much of a choice as I've been a fan for over 12 years.

And I think I said earlier the "Live Gothic" is one of the best concert DVD's I've ever seen, and it comes with the CD version as well.  That would also be a great starting point.
