Title: Scorpions: my new guilty pleasure
Post by: LudwigVan on March 02, 2011, 10:50:29 AM
I just felt like making a thread about this band.  Frankly I'm a bit shocked that a self-avowed Prog snob (myself) has taken a liking to the Scorpions, as they seem to represent everything that would turn me off from a band.

At first glance, I was repulsed by the Euro-trashy album covers replete with hot women in compromising positions, not to mention the ESL-style of lyric writing.  The songs are chockful of juvenile sexual innuendo and cornball rocknroll cliches, as borne out by titles such as Bad Boys Running Wild, Big City Nights, Hold Me Tight, etc ad nauseum.  And the Scorps are one of the masters of the syrupy power ballad, something that I normally cringe at.

By all measures, this band should be "unlistenable" in my book, but there's something in the execution of the music that's totally drawn me in.  I love Klaus Meine's vocals and that twin-guitar attack is absolutely killer... one of the best.  The music really is very 'scorpion-like' in its attack and vigor.

I just listened to Tokyo Tapes for the 1st time ever and it is a stunning live album.  The Scorpions epitomize low-brow hard rock, yet somehow they ROCK ME LIKE A HURRICANE.

LV, I told you so!
Tokyo Tapes is awesome. Been listening to that since high school. The live version of We'll Burn The Sky gives me chills. I still love Lovedrive through Love At First Sting, that era, but the Roth albums are chocked full of goodness.
Sails Of Charon has the most addicting riff..easily as addicting as Megadeth's Black Curtains.

There is nothing AT ALL guilty about liking the Scorpions. To me it would make much more sense for someone to say that Opeth was a guilty pleasure.

Anyway, their 70s stuff is far and away the best, in addition to Blackout and Love at First Sting. And they probably have the distinction of having the greatest collection of lead guitar talent over the years (Roth, Schenker, Schenker, Jabs).

I never understand why people feel the need to qualify liking something by calling it a guilty pleasure. I have no guilty pleasures. If I like something, I make no apologies or excuses for it. I just enjoy it.

their latest is actually my favorite...I have not heard tokyo tapes (that I remember  ).  I will have to check it out

Definitely check it out. Quality live recording. I didn't think the new one was anything special, especially after the strong showing on Humanity Hour 1. Sting of the Tail felt too much like a rehash of old musical themes from throughout their career, kind of like a summary paragraph of a report, to remind the listener of past glory as they prepare to ride off into the sunset (until the cliche reunion tour)...

EDIT - Ignore comments about SotT and just leave it as I agree with you on Humanity Hour 1...

Sting In The Tail absolutely blows. Humanity is very good, and probably their best album in the last 20 years.

I was just being a bit facetious in calling them a guilty pleasure.

It was more a way of drawing attention to the fact that the Scorpions fall outside my normal listening habits, especially for someone of my eminently high pretensions.   ;D

Yup, those early albums are quite unique.

How is the other live album... World Wide Live?

Well the biggest complaint is that there's no Roth era songs on it. It's recorded in different cities but it maintains the setlist order throughout. This was my 4th concert and one of the coolest things is how they went from Holiday into Still Loving You. WWL does a good job in capturing that moment.  I really like it, but the songs do remain pretty faithful to their studio conterparts. One song that is vastly imporoved, howver, from the live treatment is Loving You Sunday Morning, which has a lot more life in it.

I agree with what was said about WWL in a previous comment. It basically is a live GH disc of that era of the band. I believe I have an extra version lying around the house (original CD without the bonus tracks that that were thrown in for the remaster) and if it still is in my sell stack, I could send it your way if you want it for however much you think it is worth to you.

There are at least three other live CDs - Live Bites (never heard it), Moments of Glory (also never heard, features orchestra I think) and Acoustica (unplugged and a very strong unplugged album, an interesting mix of standards and some unusual covers a good listen if you happen to stumble across it).

I thought it was 1984 which would have been my 20th birthday. I remember the show very well, msg was about 1/3 full while Bon Jovi was on...he finished his set and the place was still only about 1/2 full...Lights went down just before the Scorpions hit the stage and when they came back on (Opened with Coming Home) the place was packed not an empty seat..I remember the shirt they had for the MSG show as well the Statue of Liberty with a scorp tail coming out from under her gown

They played in Providence on June 7th, '84. Bon Jovi was awesome too. I bought their album the next day. Scorps was a Saturday night, and we went to see This Is Spinal Tap at the movies the night before. That's about as good a weekend can get for a 10th grader!

I had ‘Best of Rockers and Ballads’ but most have sold/traded it. I do still love ‘Still Loving You’ and their version of ‘I Can’t Explain.’ I liked their more popular songs, but obviously not enough to hold on to the one CD I had of theirs. I don’t think I ever knew they went back so many years before making it big. I’ll have to check out the older material.

Just checked the wiki… says they formed in 1965 and their first album release was 1972. Ouch.

Humanity: Hour 1 is an amazing album.

Indeed.  I didn't know whether or not the Scorpions still had it, but it seems they do.  The drums and guitars sound very powerful, though the lead vocals are just a tiny bit weaker compared to older material.  They're still plenty good, though, and the production is awesome.  I like the sound of it.

I'm pretty much a prog snob myself, but Scorpions are one of those bands I'll crank up once in a while when it's time to just rock out.

Oh absolutely. I believe Testament covered that song, too.

@ LudwigVan...I can't believe you don't like China White. It's the one Jabs era track that could've been lifted from the Roth era. Picture it being played in the middle of Tokyo Tapes. Seriously, it's so unique, and that riff is as addicting as the one in the Sails Of Charon.

A few months ago I caught them in Mexico City on their farewell tour. I thought they were better now than the last time I saw them in 1993...one of the best pure metal shows I've ever seen. They were totally into it and are truly going out on a high note. And their latest and last album Sting In the Tail is their best since Blackout imo.

Yngwie covered Sails too.   I'll listen to China White again.  For some reason, I find it drags on a bit.  Is it on Live Bites or World Wide Live?

As much as the Scorpions are well-acknowledged as a heavy metal band, I'm finding that they're very much steeped in old-time rock n' roll, as evidenced by their covers of Long Tall Sally and Hound Dog on Tokyo Tapes.  Their songs just have this kind of 'swing' to them that harkens back to rockabilly days.  Very cool.

LV, I think that China White can get draggy, but I was listening to it last night thinking of you. I found that it had kind of a Uli vibe to it. Even the backing vocals are right in his range. I find it to be as close to an old school Scorps track than anything other post Roth. It's not on any of the official live albums. I had actually planned on trying to find a live version of it today. And THAT RIFF! It's menacing.

. And their latest and last album Sting In the Tail is their best since Blackout imo.
Really? I think they took every single Scorps cliche and jam it into one last album.
Since Blackout?.. I'm taking Love At First Sting, Humanity, Crazy World, and heck, even Savage Amusement over it.

While I won't put them at the top of my list, the Scorpions are an excellent band that does what they do very well.  You're not going to find too many surprises from them, but you'll usually find good old fashioned hard rock.  I'd say if you really want a treat, check out their mid 94 album Face the Heat, which has some truly awesome songs such as Woman, Alien Nation, and No Pain No Gain.

While waiting for my kids, I just spun Crazy World. A very underrated album. Musically it really rocks, but lyrically it's downright cringeworthy.

Here's a great song whose lyrics don't seem like they're written by a 13 year old!

To me, that's their least memorable album from their '80s - mid-'90s output.  It's like they said, "let's take our most commercial-sounding output from this time period, use those songs as an exact blueprint, and pay even less attention than usual to the lyrics, and we'll call that an album."  I like CrimsonE's comment that they are a band that you shouldn't really expect any surprises from.  And that's fine.  They have for the most part stuck to a very standard formula that has worked brilliantly throughout the years.  But, to me, Crazy World was so formulaic and felt so "by-the-numbers" that it ended up feeling rather pointless to me as an album.  Definitely my least favorite work from them during the 1980-1995 period.

I'd have to agree with bosk1 on Crazy World. I really can't even listen to it anymore.

What do you all think about Sting In the Tail? I really dig this album. There's a couple songs that have the usual cringe worthy lyrics, but this album rocks and has some of their best power ballads to date. At the Mexico City show they played Sting In the Tail and The Best Is Yet To Come. Both went over really well live showing they still got it.

The first time I heard I'm Going Mad, I was 14 yrs old, and I laughed my ass off.   In my old age, I've come to appreciate it more.  It's just weird.  I mean, who writes a song about wandering in the desert being driven crazy by thirst?

EDIT:

SUN IS DLYING OUT MY BRAIIIIINNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That line still cracks me up.

Listening to Love At First Sting for the first time in a really long time. I have fonder memories with this album than I initially thought. Reminds me a LOT of my first girlfriend, since I think this was one of the albums we listened to on her record player back before I knew how to download stuff. Her parents had a HUGE vinyl collection of music that I had been interested in checking out, but never had enough money to buy all of it. That was a really fun time.

Anyway, does anyone else notice a striking similarity between I'm Leaving You and Riot's Maryanne?

Huge fan of Klaus.  Just love the way that guy sings.   For very different reasons, they really did little wrong (save for letting Uli anywhere near a vocal mike) from Lonesome Crow through Savage Amusement (though I'm not a huge fan of the second live album).

I saw them on the LAFS tour, and while it was excellent, I wish I couild have seen some of those early songs (Sails, We'll Burn The Sky, In Trance) live.   Also, the cover to In Trance is one of my favorite album covers of all time.

I prefer the original cover of Lovedrive.  Glad they brought it back.

But Virgin Killer may be the only original artwork in rock-n-roll history I would never own.   I honestly don't think they asked for that specific artwork...but when they had it shown to them, they thought it would be "edgy".    Oh, it was edgy alright.    But rather than ask "what were they thinking", I think it's better to ask what that artist was thinking???

So I just listened to Savage Amusement for the first time, I like it. The production is a bit too polished for my taste though. Good songs, but they don't quite 'rock' the way I'd expect from the Scorps. Kind of a mellow, laid back affair.

I've been getting into Scorpions lately, and I'm digging both the 80s classics and the stuff with Uli. The Sails of Charon has got to be my favorite song :metal

I haven't checked Return to Forever, but HH1 is fantastic. Just a great rock album. Always an enjoyable listen.

See, I thought Sting in the Tail wasn't that bad, but it had a few songs that I always tend to skip (the heavier ones), so not that good either. But I really like Raised on Rock, The Good Die Young, Lorelei, Sly and especially The Best is Yet to Come. That last one might be one of my favourite Scorpions songs along with their older hits.

Was just thinking about this band over the last couple of days.  As I think back, they were an integral part of my discovery and love of metal.  I remember when I was young (as in, middle school age), and there were those "rocker" kids with their long hair, that would hang out at the park and smoke while blasting their rock music.  Those were the kids I was simultaneously scared of and enthralled by.  And they listened to stuff like Scorpions.  And that made that sort of music simultaneously taboo and intriguing.  Blackout was one of those songs I remember from that period.

It wasn't until Love At First Sting, and the video for Rock You Like A Hurricane blowing up on MTV that I became a fan.  It hit at the right time, because it was shortly before that that I really began exploring music on my own, and discovering that I really liked that '80s, guitar-driven rock sound of bands like Def Leppard, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Van Halen, Ozzy, etc.  The Blackout - LAFS era was just perfect for me.  Good songwriting chops.  Amazing vocals.  Some of the nastiest riffs and blistering solos imaginable.  This is a band that really could do not wrong at this point in their careers.  A lot of the later stuff lost me, both because it probably wasn't of the same quality, and because Scorps are best when they do what they do, and when they do what they do, they are formulaic, so there isn't really a lot of "new" brought to the table to hold one's interest.  But they have had a really interesting career, and I have really enjoyed a lot of their music.

Interestingly, they aren't a band where I have ever felt the urge to be a completest and get everything they have done.  Some of their stuff, I just don't care for.  But I am fairly happy with what I have.  To me, a good Scorps collection consists of:  Blackout, LAFS, World Wide Live, Savage Amusement, Face the Heat, Live Bites, Humanity, and one of their "hits" compilations (I forget which one, but it is 2 disks, and has all the classics with a few rarities).

As has been noted before, the problem is, their career is all over the map.  Like Yes in that regard.   "In Trance" is AWESOME, but it's nothing like "Blackout" or "Animal Magnetism" (my personal favorite of the "Matthias" era).

I was not a completist until I discovered the RCA era. That was what turned me from a casual fan into a hard-core fan. But I do agree that most of their latter day stuff just does not bring it to the table. Humanity would be the exception.

I did like the 70's Medley. That was cool. I wish they played those songs in the 80's. I like Winds Of Change OK enough, but Send Me An Angel is just redundant there. But the opener was kind of weak, and I've never liked Make It Real.

Honestly, I don't have anything against The Scorps, but it was kind of painful listening to Klaus. But like I said, he's 71.

I suppose I should listen to the show.  I'm not really ready, though, to hear them on the decline, especially Klaus, since that's the draw for me (I love that moment in "Can't Live Without You":  "one... two...a-ONE TWO THREE FOUR!").  I love the Uli years for the most part (I despite the song "Steamrock Fever", though. For some reason it rubbed me the wrong way and I'm not sure I could articulate why well enough), and I love the first four albums in the Matthias years, but after that they sort of became Judas Priest for me. I get a "hey, what're the kids buying these days!" (that is, contrived) vibe to them in the same way I get that vibe from Priest.  Having said that, I saw the "Love At First Sting" tour, and "Still Loving You" live is a treat for the ages.

Yeah, I don't get that at all.  I mean, if you are expecting them to perform like they are still in their 20s, you obviously aren't going to get that.  But if you don't think that performance was still extremely high level, I don't know what to say.

They're shows are really energetic. You can feel they're still giving it their all and having a blast. The fact Klaus can't sing as high anymore doesn't bother me, he still is in tune. The 70's Medley was the highlight. Really good songs.

From Taken By Force through Savage Amusement, it was always a fun thing to seek out the Herman Rarebell lyrics.  CLEARLY he didn't grasp some of the nuances of the German-to-English translation.   :)

I'm not the HUGEST fan of Jabs; he's good - very good - but his tone is a little too brittle for me compared to Uli and Michael.

I think their song "Arizona" has some of the best guitar playing in the 80's hard rock.
Jabs is killing it from start to finish.

That's actually a GREAT album (it's got We'll Burn The Sky on it as well).  The intro to Sails is killer.

I loved this comment to the video:
"If I made love to my wife like Uli does to that guitar, she probably wouldn't have left me."

Trivia:  We'll Burn The Sky was co-written by Monika Danneman, Jimi Hendrix' last girlfriend.  Uli Roth, who is very much influenced by Jimi Hendrix, later dated her too.    There's something creepy about that.  :)

I've come to the point where I'm able to block out most of the Scorpions' lyrics. Klaus Meine's vocals are just another instrument for me, in that I hear them in a purely tonal aspect.

Speaking of Uli Jon Roth, I can't help thinking that his tremendous talent went to waste after he left the Scorps. It's too bad he didn't hook up with a legit band/vocalist. His Electric Sun/solo/retro-Hendrix stuff is kind of blah.

Yes, Burn the Sky is epic too. All of the Uli-era albums are great, IMO.

Has anyone been listening to Rock Believer? For me this is the best Scorpions album in over 30 years. A throwback to their Blackout / Love at First Sting sound.

Roots in Your Boots has a bit of a Blackout/Dynamite type riff; in Knock Em Dead I hear Big City Nights; the title track has a bit of a No-one Like You feel; Seventh Sun has a nice China White-type riff. My current favourite is Shining in Your Soul.

The deluxe edition has a bonus CD with 5 songs, though everything could easily have fit onto to one 65 minute long disc. Bit of a cash grab, but there are some good rockers on the bonus disc.

TAC, Humanity Hour 1 is great, but Rock Believer is more old school Scorpions.

Yeah, some the lyrics are pretty sketchy, but Scorpions have never been known for their lyrical prowess.  :lol

The songs I recommend checking out are Shining of Your Soul, Seventh Sun and Rock Believer.

I still have to listen more carefully the Scorpions's discography after Love at First Sting, but the 2 albums that I really like after that is Sting in the Tail and the new one (that it seems a little superior than SiTT). It's always hard to compare to the classics, but the style of those 2 albums is pretty in line with the 80-85's Scorpions. Humanity Hour 1 I found interesting and trying to incorporate a more modern influence (in a good way), but I have to admit that I never heard it properly.

I thought Sting In The Tail was putrid.

I found that Savage Amusement has aged fairly well, as has Crazy World. After those, only Humanity Hour 1 has interested me.

Putrid :lol, because of the lyrics? I must admit that I paid zero attention on them, if it's the case. I will give another try on Savage Amusement and Crazy World, but, at the time I tried to listen, both seemed to me too commercial and forced, being Savage kind of their Turbo. But it was just a first impression.

I felt the same way about Savage Amusement when it came out. I saw the tour, but was very lukewarm on the album. In 1988, I was in a much heavier mood for my music. But to me, it has aged well. That's all I'm saying.

That's mainly me, but I suppose I should give SA another spin.  It always paled next to that which came immediately before.  But I'm partial to the Herman/Dieter Dirks era, so maybe I owe it another try.

So far it's pretty good considering how late into the career they are. I'm enjoying it. Looking forward to seeing some of these songs tonight. This concert should be interesting, it's called The Golden Jubilee to celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh independence, the Garden is basicly sold out. The opening band is from Bangladesh. I have no idea what to expect from this event, but this could be something unique.

Concert was fun, thought the band sounded pretty good specifically Klaus.  The whole show was a bit odd though.  I thought it was sold out becasue there were only a handful of single seats available before the show, but turns out, they didn't sell the top bowl of the arena (200 level) even though I bought a 300 level seat  :lol so when I scanned my ticket to get in, they told me to go right to the will call for a new ticket.  Ended up with a great seat in the 100, aisle and mid venue.  Basically got $60 value of a ticket upgrade.  Also sat next to a couple guys who were a lot of fun to chill with for the duration of the show, we even took a pic together.

So this concert was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh independence so a significant amount of Bangladesh people were there.  Not your typical rock crowd.  It started with their national anthem, very different.  Then a band called Chirkutt from Bangladesh played.  Musically, not terrible, but I thought their set sucked.  The singer talked for half of it while complaining they only got 20 minutes.  The definitely were on stage for closer to 30 minutes though and I could see a stage manager about to pull the plug on them  :lol also I believe this is the reason why Scorpions cut No One Like You from the encore.  So mad about that.  Otherwise, show was really good.  I liked the new songs live too.  Here's Seventh Sun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUB3Nsfd5MI)

I didn't realize they had toured the states together back in 2003! I am going to try and catch them at a date here. I saw Scorpions with Queensryche a few years ago and it was a great show. I don't think Coverdale is any good but he's got a top-notch band behind him and this may be our last chance to see them with their "retirement tour".

I'd go to that tour but it's not coming close enough to me and the closest shows don't have Whitesnake as support.  Just saw Scorpions so no need to travel for it.  I'm going to guess Whitesnake will come around again before calling it quits.  I know Coverdale isn't really performing at a high level these days but I still enjoyed the Whitesnake shows I saw over the last few years.  That will be a fun show for those who see it.

I know the Connecticut date doesn't have Whitesnake; does the New York date?

I just want to see Coverdale. I know he's an odd duck, and I know his voice isn't what it was, but man, I've been listening to those mid-90's releases, especially the "Unzipped" box set and MAN, in his prime could that man SING.  His voice was like velvet.

It does, although it's technically closer than AC it would take a bit longer to get there with typical long island traffic.  Funny enough, the guys who sat next to me on Friday were talking about that arena and how it's new and very good place to see a show.  It's just not going to be that show if I do go. I'd rather see Iron Maiden for a 2nd show of that tour instead if I were to make that journey.

Yeah, that album was awful.  I remember buying it and Nuclear Cowboy from John Sykes at the same time.  That was the first time I ever bought albums and promptly took them back to the store to demand a refund.

I'm somewhat selective when it comes to Scorpions.  When they hit for me, they hit pretty hard.  But they have a lot of material, and I am just not interested in a lot of it.

For me, the run of Blackout through Savage Amusement was magic.

I don't own anything prior to Blackout and don't really have any desire to.  There are a number of good songs scattered throughout those early albums, but I don't have a desire to own the albums themselves.

After Savage Amusement, it's hit and miss.  Crazy world was okay, but seemed like a generic, "let's just follow the Scorpions radio hit formula" album from start to finish.  Face the Heat was GREAT.  Pure Instinct wasn't bad.  I don't remember anything on it being a real standout, but it sounded like Scorpions and had some pretty consistent mid-tier Scorps tunes.  After that, the only ones I bought were Eye II Eye and Humanity.  Hated the former; LOVED the latter and put it up there with their best material.

Haven't heard the other albums and never really had much desire to.  Honestly, I'm perfectly content with my Scorpions collection consisting solely of Blackout, Love at First Sting, Savage Amusement, Face the Heat, and Humanity, with the addition of a 2-disk hits album, World Wide Live, and Live Bites.  I feel like that collection is giving me just about everything I want to listen to from them when I want a good Scorpions fix.

I'm a lot more into the early years - I LOVE Tokyo Tapes, and Taken By Force is a great album - and my "magic period" is "Lovedrive" through "Savage Amusement" (maybe just through "Love At First Sting") but conceptually, I'm in agreement with this.  They very much are a band of eras or sections.   I have Humanity Hour (it IS good) but I think they fell into a sort of trap after SA of having the "epic hit" (Winds Of Change) and have been sort of chasing that ever since.  Scorpions for me aren't a world-changing band with deep social and cultural issues being addressed in their music, and sometimes I think that's how they see themselves.  They are to me just good old fashioned high energy hard rock.

That's a really interesting take.  I hadn't thought about it in those terms before, but I think that's probably pretty accurate.  But then again, as one of the drivers on that show in Russia and the coming down of the Wall, having Winds of Change, being active participants in Stairway To Heaven/Highway To Hell, I think there's maybe something to how they see themselves as doing important cultural things, at least more than we might be willing to give knee-jerk credit for if we don't stop for a moment to think about it.

Back to Eye II Eye, I just remembered the band photo that was either on the back cover or inside the booklet (I forget which).  The expression on Rudy's face says it all--it is along the lines of, "I...I find it hard to believe we are putting this out under the Scorpions banner, but...hey, it's the '90s, and the entire music scene is a circus right how, so..."  :lol

I probably could have worded that better, but I wasn't passing judgment on them for thinking that.  They were in many ways at ground zero, having grown up in a country divided.  I'm just saying FOR ME, having grown up with the sort of tortured English of some of their mid-period songs, some of the shall we say, "misunderstandings" of their early album covers, and some of the criticisms from both Uli Roth and Michael Schenker (the latter of which you should admittedly take with a grain of salt) I opted to not spend too much time on that stuff.  Later when they wanted me to, it was hard to make the transition.

Bosk, I will admit that pre-Lovedrive has a very 70s feel to it and people will either love it or hate it. But if you love the Blackout era stuff, then Lovedrive is a MUST.

Yeah, that's actually a part of it.  Something about '70s rock often just doesn't do it for me.  It's like a lot of bands from that era were kind of finding their way to the stuff I liked about a lot of similar stuff in the '80s, but hadn't gotten there yet.  So there are quite a few bands from that era that are in the same vein as later bands I like, but those earlier ones just don't do it for me.  Or bands that lasted through both decades where I don't really care for a lot of their earlier material.  Not a big deal.  I don't hate it.  It just doesn't grab me like the stuff I really like.

As to Lovedrive specifically, I've heard it.  The hits or more well-known songs are on albums like World Wide Live and the hits album that I have, and the deep cuts don't really move the needle for me in terms of making me buy the album proper.  In other words, I feel like I already have what I like from it.

Yup, 5 of the 8 tracks made the Worldwide Live album, with only Is There Anybody There, Always Somewhere, and the title track not making it.

I actually consider Lovedrive's title track, the best song on the album.

I always thought them going from Holiday right into Still Loving You was magnificent.

I didn't realize it was 5 of 8.  So, in addition to that, I have the title track on the hits compilation and Anybody There on Live Bites.  So I guess I actually have every song but one (Always Somewhere).  :lol

EDIT:  BTW, Deadly Sting is the compilation album I have.

Nice!

And even though Lovedrive is technically a 70's album (1979), it is the first album for the Scorps with a new style that they would further develop into the 80's. It's not the Uli Roth spacey style. It's the first album with Matthias Jabs, with Michael Schenker playing on half the album as well.

Wow, they are apparently doing a Vegas residency where they are playing all of Love at First Sting.  Not sure whether I'll pull the trigger, but that warrants some serious consideration.

Sad news there but not a complete surprise unfortunately. He was still drumming for The Scorpions when I saw them and it was a great show. I know he had been struggling with his personal issues for the past few years but I was hoping he'd pull through.

I'd go see that.  Klaus singing "Still Loving You" in an arena is still an indelible memory for me.

Sure...40 years ago, maybe.

Has he gone downhill? I saw him only about 6 years or so ago and he was still nailing it. I was impressed.

Have they ever played Crossfire before? Underrated track.

I had assumed you were being serious.  I haven't followed them closely for a long time, but clips I have seen every now and then for the last few years, he has sounded pretty rough.  And that's not a knock on him.  Their stuff is REALLY hard, and he's around 75 or so.

Well, it's a little of both, actually.

I'm just an eye roller when I hear a band is going to play 40 year old albums in their entirety. But that's on me.

I get that.  But for me, it depends.  If that's pretty much all they do, and they aren't putting out new music, I don't really care to see the full-on nostalgia act.  But as far as I know, they haven't been doing that where they play all of Blackout one tour, then Love At First Sting on the next, etc.  But an older act doing a truly rare string of shows for nostalgia to celebrate one of their clear favorite albums?  I'm all for that.

I thought Klaus was very solid in NYC in 2022. He's so old though so he's not going to be at his best.  Still very worth seeing IMO. PLus, back to the age thing, who knows when the last time is.

Klaus has a very good understanding of what his voice can and can't do at his age. He doesn't over exert himself and they throw in a couple instrumentals and a drum solo to give him some breaks during the show.
