Title: Skydivingninja's Song Roulette v. Another one?
Post by: skydivingninja on February 28, 2011, 06:03:02 AM
SUP GUYS!  My roulette has officially begun!  Here are the participants:

Sigz
Lateralus88
Acidrainlte
Gorille
Antigoon
dtismajesty
TheVoxyn
ZBomber

Rounds will be themed, genres aren't off-limits.  The rounds, however, will be a bit odd, as you're about to discover.  Here's my last FM.
https://www.last.fm/user/Skydivingninja

All right, ROUND 1: Send me something sinister and evil.  However, I would prefer if the song wasn't necessarily metal.  The kind of atmosphere from songs like Disruptr, Wake Up, and Hellfire from being "evil but not metal" is hard to top.

Looking forward to this.  I'm interested in seeing the picks for the first round. Evil but not metal is a great idea sky.

Okay, this category is hard. There is absolutely nothing that springs to mind.

Lol. Wut exactly is evil music anyway?

The only thing remotely evil that I have ever come across is norwegian black metal. And that is evil for real... lol

That better not be the Wake Up I'm thinking of.

This is going to take some careful picking. I can't think of anything that doesn't ultimately end up being MEHTUL.

I hope you're not thinking of the Coheed "Wake Up" then.

@Voxyn: You can send metal if you want.  Don't feel pressured to match the ridiculous criteria that I said I prefer for the round.  :)

EDIT: so far I've had two songs that were just the sort of thing I envisioned, one that was cool but all right, and one that just creeped me the fuck out.  This is going to be a great roulette

Lol, I should proofread myself more.  I mean, the song was a cool idea, but just ended up being only all right in practice.

And wow you guys have sent in your songs fast.  Just waiting on Voxyn and Gorille now!

Ah, I think I got something. It's totally different from what I was about to send (post-rock instead of some industrial electronical thingie) but I hope I get bonus points for using an unexpected genre.

I think you'll like my pick.  :lol Although to be honest I don't think I will get a very good score in this round. It was kind of an out-there choice but it was the first thing that came to my mind that wasn't metal.

WHERE THE HELL ARE THE RESULTS?!
Title: Re: Skydivingninja's Song Roulette v. Another one?
Post by: skydivingninja on March 01, 2011, 02:15:44 PM
You mean these results?

5 Points-Antigoon
Mumford & Sons-Dust Bowl Dance
Man, this song was just the kind of thing I was thinking of.  I've heard a bunch about these guys and a few songs here and there, but this convinced me that I need to pick up their album.  The singer's voice is a lot more versatile than I thought it was going to be, at least in terms of mood (I don't expect him to be doing death growls anytime soon).  The moment where the song "turns" is incredible.  They need to start making more cool stuff like this so people like me don't just almost immediately throw in the "sounds fine, but nothing really special" camp after hearing a few folk songs.  Well done.

4 Points-Sigz
Aphex Twin-Come to Daddy
Holy.  Fuck.  After I listened to this song and watched the video I stayed under my bed for the rest of the day.  Jesus Christ was that creepy.  If it wasn't for the hooks of Antigoon's song it probably would have won.  This song is more evil than every black metal band wishes they could be.  Amazing that something so simple, and one repeated phrase (that's kind of cliche evil, honestly) could inspire actual terror.  I've heard a lot about Aphex Twin as well and will add it to my list of things to check out.

4 Points-Zbomber
Dave Matthews Band-Halloween
If I could give you a special award for this round, it would be the "Smasher of Preconceived Notions About Dave Matthews."  I've heard a LOT of DMB in my day, and what I've always noticed is that the songs are good, the musicianship is top notch, and live recordings > studio, but after fifteen minutes everything kind of blends together.  Not this one.  Not "Halloween."  What really struck me as cool about this song was that it really felt like Dave Matthews mutated into something horrible.  Same instrumentation, same voice (barely), same kind of song structure, but...minor.  It was really cool.  However, Dave's vocals kind of got on my nerves a bit, like he was trying a bit TOO hard.  Is the rest of the album just as varied in sound and mood?

3 Points-TheVoxyn
God Is An Astronaut-Echoes
I actually have a GIAA album: The End of the Beginning, but I haven't listened to it much after a bit of a falling-out with post-rock.  This song made me remember why I checked them out in the first place.  This song crushes anything thats on TEOTB though.  The industrial side of their music is perfectly balanced with the post-rock side, and together is incredibly unique.  My jaw was actually open at one point.

3 Points-Gorille85
Ulver-Dressed in Black
Once again, another band I've heard so much about recently, mostly because of you and Zantera.  I honestly wasn't sure what to expect.  I heard that they were electronic, but used to be black metal.  To be honest, I don't hear much of why you and other Ulver fans consider the singer to be so great, maybe I need to listen to more of their stuff.  However, the mood and atmosphere of this song was top notch.  It was very cool, but I feel like here in South Carolina the winter weather that would be conducive to this music has just ended.  :-\

3 Points-Acidrainlte
Tomahawk-Flashback
Very simple hard/heavy music, simple kind of great creepyish vocals, but the groove was great.  Sounded like the soundtrack to an insane asylum.  Especially the last part of the chorus, which sounded like the singer of The Mars Volta finally overdosed on acid.  Only issue is that it kinda stays in the same place, and with another minute of cool stuff it could've been a fantastic song instead of just good.

2 Points-Lateralus88
Suicide Commando-Hellraiser
Evil dance music?  "HELL YES" was my initial thought.  However, it was all kind of forgettable for me, while Sigz's Aphex Twin song, another evil electronic number, had enough creepy parts (without the aid of the video, btw) that stayed in my head for the next few hours and earlier today.  Definitely fit the theme though.

1 Point-dtismajesty
Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses-Peacock the Heretic
First of all, these guys need to shorten their band name.  Its worse than Trail of the Dead.  As for the song itself, it was a nice instrumental, but that's it, unfortunately.  Nothing really stood out like in Voxyn's GIAA song.  Sorry, kid.

Current Standings:
Antigoon 5
Sigz 4
Zbomber 4
TheVoxyn 3
Gorille85 3
Acidrainlte 3
Lateralus88 88/44=2
dtismajesty 1

Next round: Probably THE deciding factor in getting into Dream Theater was James' voice.  After that, I started checking out more and more modern bands and got out of my classic rock snob phase.  This led me to discover most of my favorite bands today.  So your mission, whether you choose to accept it (and you must accept it, but if you choose not to, that's cool, we can reschedule for some other time.  I'm easy like Sunday mornin'.) is to send me a song with an amazing vocal performance.  Doesn't have to mean operatic voice though, sometimes the way a vocalist sings a simple ballad is just as impressive as James LaBrie's F#.

Also, Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses is an awesome name.  I wouldn't have it any shorter

Oh wow, I'm surprised you liked it actually!  :tup I wouldn't say the rest of the album is like that song, though. Halloween is very different from the rest of the album, but it might be worth checking out. There are a lot of darker songs on that album, like "Don't Drink The Water", but also lighter stuff like "Stay" and "The Dreaming Tree" (which is my personal favorite DMB song). And I completely understand what you mean about his voice, it really took me a long time before I kinda got "used" to it.  :lol That song is very different though, because like you said he was really straining for it to sound like that. He also didn't put the lyrics for that song in the liner notes because he didn't want his mom to read them.  :lol

I'll take a look at your last.fm and then send my submission later tonight!

Excellent song! :tup Not my favourite on the album, but still great and definitely one of the darker ones. Definitely get the album Matt, it's amazing and has a great variety of tone.

Also LOL at Joe starting with the same band he started my Roulette with. And winning 5 points with it again. :lol

I understand where Antigoon's coming from.  Every roulette I've been in has involved me sending a Mew song in an early round, and they usually do fairly well (except for UMH's because he has something against beautiful, childlike, dreamlike voices).

Also, dtismajesty, I'll call you a kid until you stop looking like you're twelve in your pictures

Oh absolutely, I've been in 3 roulettes and in all of them have submitted songs by The Cat Empire and Freak Kitchen, and they've always done well because they have enough variety that I can tailor which song I choose to each person.

:lol It's a very good song, although again there are others on the album I prefer. But then again, the vocals in that song are really nice, and it's all about good music that fits the theme, which is why you only ranked in the middle for my second round. :P

Damn.  I was hoping ZBomber would have killed himself by now so he'd stop sending me such awful songs.

JK!  Results time!

5 Points-TheVoxyn
Jeff Buckley-Lover, You Should've Come Over
Well, I think after all these years, I'm getting a sense of what all you Buckley-heads are blowing your loads over.  I had only heard his version of "Hallelujah" before, which I thought was all right (I bought it as part of that thing a few years ago where you try and get one song to beat the X Factor single in the UK).  So I was kinda confused when I saw all these people on DTF calling him the greatest voice ever.  I don't think I'd go that far, but DAMN this shows off his chops!  Very impressed.  Guess I should take the next step towards Hipsterdom and pick up Grace soon.

4 Points-DTisMajesty
Susanne Sonfor-Father Father
Well this made up for your last round SO MUCH.  Never heard her even mentioned on these boards, or anywhere on the Internet.  Why is Ytse our obscure music finder when you've sent me unknown stuff the past few rounds?  :lol  Her voice is really haunting in this song.  Its incredibly beautiful, and looking past her vocals alone, that's a lovely piano melody, the kind of thing you could listen to for ages and not get tired of it.

4 Points-Sigz
Brand New-Daisy
I just heard Brand New for the first time on zxlkho's radio show a few weeks ago and thought they were pretty awesome.  This only confirms it even more.  I'm not really sure what more to say about it, other than "powerful."

3 Points-AcidRainlte
Faith No More-Star A.D.
You would've been in the four point range if not for Sigz's song.  It was pretty close.  So yeah, Mike Patton.  Heard tons about him as well, this song showed me how awesome he really is.  I mean, there are "crazy sounding vocals," like the guy from DSO, and then there are these, which manage to have a lot more power and...balls?  I guess?  I also found it really cool how subtly his voice had changed by the end of the song.

3 Points-Gorille85
Julie Christmas-I'm So Afraid
Wow.  This is a lot different from the little MOOB stuff I heard.  Pretty good, though for some reason I've found myself disliking the tone of her voice sometimes, it gets kind of shrill.  I dunno.  But it was a good song and she's a pretty good vocalist.  Good and unique, which is what the rest of the submissions kind of suffer from.

Fleetwood Mac-I'm So Afraid
I really just have their greatest hits, but don't really listen to them outside of "Rhiannon," so I let this one count.  Very good vocals, but nothing really that special about them.  I feel like I've heard it before, you know?  Despite that, the music behind it was incredible.  There's nothing WRONG with the vocals, but there's nothing that knocks you over the head with greatness.

2 Points-Antigoon
The Littlest Man Band-Always Sayin'
This was a pretty good song, but I feel like the others just outclassed it.  I'd put it in the 3's if I could.  Sorry I don't have more to say :(

1 Point-Lateralus88
Shinedown-I Dare You
Eh.  I mean, it was fine, but I have the same complaint as I do with ZBomber's submission, which is that I feel I've heard it before.  The song was all right, but in a contest of vocals it doesn't shine (cwatididthur) through.

Next round: Blatant thievery from BrotherH time!  Send me something with a really awesome intro.  As my love for songs like "Deadhead," "Trial of Tears," "Time Consumer," and "Red Barchetta" show, I love me an awesome intro.  Doesn't have to be long, just great.  You have five earth minutes.  Make it perfect!

Interesting round choice. Again, nothing jumps to mind so I'll have to think about this one for a bit.

Also :( thought my submission would place higher. Although when you compare it to everyone else's submissions, I guess it wasn't the best choice.

...Shinedown's vocals not impressive? You've got to be kidding me. Brent Smith easily has one of (if not the best) best voices in mainstream music. But oh well, opinions, etc.

Why is Ytse our obscure music finder when you've sent me unknown stuff the past few rounds?

He's not.  I'm Indie as fuck.

Also,

Well this made up for your last round SO MUCH.  Never heard her even mentioned on these boards, or anywhere on the Internet.

Shame on you for not paying attention to how much I've been trying to pimp her music on the internet.

I'm also glad you liked Buckley, though.  I was going to send that same song, but the Voxyn warned me he already had!

Sent.

Sent you the same think as that I sent LLTWM. I really couldn't think of anything. The only genre with long songs/intro's I listen to it post-rock and there the line between intro and song is kinda blurry :p.
Title: Re: Skydivingninja's Song Roulette v. Another one?
Post by: ZBomber on March 11, 2011, 07:50:29 AM
I haven't decided on mine yet, but... question:

Will you accept if the intro is a separate track? For example, "Son et Lumiere" by Mars Volta, "Occam's Razor" by PT are both intro tracks to the next song.
Title: Re: Skydivingninja's Song Roulette v. Another one?
Post by: skydivingninja on March 11, 2011, 08:20:43 AM
Hm...I mean, if it actually flows perfectly into the next song (intentionally, as well) then I could allow that (like in a "Hell's Kitchen" sort of way).  Though I've already heard both of those intros.

Well, the thing is, most fans of DMB would tell you there is a fair amount of variety in their sound. Their music's only really as samey as any band that focuses their sound in on a certain style, so why this claim often comes up about them kind of baffles me.

I dunno if Before These Crowded Streets has more or less variety than their other albums, but it's by far the best studio album, so if you were gonna go for one, definitely get that one.

5 Points-Antigoon
Brooke Fraser-Ice On Her Lashes
Oh look, you find another perfect song.  The intro, which was the focus of this round, wasn't anything that screamed "OMG AMAZING" the way the examples I gave did, but I'm a real sucker for a great bass groove like that, so for this song, the intro was perfect.  It was simple and it sucked me in instantly.  The song in general reminds me of something you could find on The King of Limbs, but without the electronic stuff.  Beautiful song, and I especially love the chorus, but is it supposed to end so suddenly?  ;D

4 Points-Lateralus

I think that's a pretty good writeup.  Guess I need to get that album soon.  Would tie this with Antigoon if I could.

4 Points-Sigz
Marnie Stern-Pride
I'm really liking all the stranger stuff I'm getting in this roulette that I haven't seen mentioned on the board that often.  This was probably the most unique song I've heard in this game.  Glad you sent me her as well, because I feel I need more female vocalists.  I love 'em.  Lots of catchy riffs and melodies in this, and I especially like how percussive her voice is with the lyrics.  Very cool!

3 Points-Gorille85
Boards of Canada-Everything You Do is a Balloon
And this made me realize I need to get more ambient stuff.  Not stuff like Devin Townsend, who has some ambient songs like Terminal, but this kind of stuff.  Its absolutely ace.  Its odd talking about it because there's no real "moment" that stands out before or when the song gets going, but I know there was nothing bad about it.  Are they from Montreal as well?

3 Points-dtismajesty
Oceansize-Ornament/The Last Wrongs
Atmosphere (here I go sounding like a broken record again) is top notch during the Ornament part, but when the song kicks off with that great riff and cool electronic sounds, that's when I really got sucked in.  So as an intro, it may not have been the best, or exactly what I was looking for, but its okay, because it was a good song anyways.  Sorry to hear they broke up so recently though :(

3 Points-ZBomber
Vulgar Unicorn-Waiting Under The Umbrella
Yeah, you're right, this reeks of 90s new retro-prog.  However, unlike SB and the Flower Kings, this is mostly devoid of stupid organs that don't fit in with the music.  Instead its all tasteful guitar work, awesome bass grooves (which, again, I'm a sucker for), some stupid-sounding synths, and...really bland vocals.  I mean, REALLY bland.  Good thing the music was as good as it was.  I'll take another listen to the Pineapple Thief album I have (Tightly Wound) soon, see how much better this guy has gotten.

2 Points-TheVoxyn
Olafur Arnalds-3055
Jesus man, you, dtismajesty, and Sigz are just bringing the most obscure stuff.  I feel bad putting this one so low, but really every song here had something to love, but your cool post-rock song didn't do so well in comparison this round.  Sorry. :(

1 Point-Acidrainlte
Protest the Hero-Blindfolds
So the music started off great, I was headbanging and thought "maybe I've misjudged PtH after all this time?"  Then the guy started singing and I cringed a bit.  There was a lot of cool music, and the ending was probably the best part, but they reminded me of a better Periphery, which is great except the singer still isn't my cup of tea.  I might warm up to him, but for now my opinion of PtH remains mostly unchanged.

So, new round, eh?  Um...how about happy music?  Spring's around the corner and soon I'll have no reason to listen to this gosh darned depressing stuff in my iTunes library.

In b4 Bend it Like Bender!

Here are the rankings.  Don't have writeups yet, sadly.  Sorry about being so bad about updating this, guys.  I can say that this was the strongest round so far, and I felt REALLY bad about the lower-scoring participants this time, because their songs were good as well.

5 Points-Sigz
Battles-Atlas

4 Points-Gorille
Foxy Shazam-Oh Lord

4 Points-Lateralus88
Flogging Molly-To Youth

3 Points-Antigoon
Doves-Caught By the River

3 Points-DTismajesty
Nick Drake-Fly

3 Points-Acidrainlte
Madness-Baggy Trousers

2 Points-ZBomber
Lindsay Buckingham-Don't Look Down

1 Point-Voxyn
Jens Lekman-The Opposite of Hallelujah

Next round, send some good music to listen to if you're depressed.  Not looking for stuff that'll make you want to commit suicide (looking at you, Blackfield), but something you can just sit in your room with, sigh, and empathize with.  Maybe introspective or emotional are better words.

First thing that hit me: great vocals!  I'm not huge on singer-songwriter or straight folk stuff, but this was a definite exception.  And you've suceeded me in bringing a band so indie I haven't even heard of them on the internet or from my indie kid friends until this moment!  But I really don't know how I can describe this song.  It was just so good and I can't explain why.  But you've won this round!  Hooray!

Antigoon-4 Points
Neko Case-Vengeance Is Sleeping
I remember hearing about Neko Case from TheOutlawXanadu's top 10 from 2009 and from Scott Pilgrim.  What a great voice, and what great lyrics too.  They're very relatable, I feel that almost anyone could find some kind of meaning that applies to them.  I certainly could.  Like Voxyn's, its beautiful, simple, and soothing, yet sad at the same time.

Lateralus88-4 Points
Novembre-Aquamarine
Album cover looks like Terria, except with a kid and a city instead of Canada.  The song sounds nothing like Terria, though.  This song was a nice change of pace from the other contestants.  While most people opted for soft sad acoustic songs, you went for a louder (though the sound of the song itself is pretty bad.  Not sure if its a loudness war thing, a youtube thing, or both, but it was kind of irritating), yet still genuinely emotional song.  The guitar work was superb.  Bonus gut points as well for sending a song with great screams.

Sigz-3 Points
Warpaint-Shadows
So I listened to two of their songs in that thread SoundscapeMN posted.  I was more of a fan of "Undertow" than whatever the other one was.  Nowhere near as good as Eisley, as SSMN claims, but they were all right.  This song's probably the best I've heard.  Liked the sort of Radioheadesque almost-danceable drum beat around the 2:00 mark during the chorus.  Gives me a bit more incentive to check out a full  album but I haven't heard anything that has blown me away yet.

TheVoxyn-3 Points
Conspire-Antimatter
Wow, this is really beautiful, simple, and soothing music.  Vocals are good as well even if they're not especially special.  Reminded me of a lower Daniel Gildenlow, Mikael Akerfeldt, or any number of Scott Stapp soundalikes from America.  It seemed like it would gain a lot from being sung by someone like Steven Wilson, though the current vocalist does a great job of making it sad without doing anything special with his vocals, so maybe it wouldn't.  I don't know.  But still, this is probably my favorite song from you so far this roulette.  Love that last line "Have I wasted a dream?"  Do these guys make more stuff like this?

Gorille-3 Points
O+S-New Life
Once again you're trying to seduce me with great bass grooves.  IT WON'T WORK I TELLS YA-okay yes it did.   :heart :heart :heart  Girl singer is awesome as well.  I'm in dire need of more female vocalists and this girl definitely fits.  This song put me in an incredibly pleasant trance.  Great pick!

dtismajesty-2 Points
Tom Waits-Dirt in the Ground
Only thing I had heard from Tom Waits before was "What's He Building in There" thanks to the intro tape to the Muse song "Deadstar" from Hullabaloo soundtrack.  I thought it was pretty cool, even if it wasn't much of a real song.  Now that I'm hearing one of his actual songs...um...his voice is worse than aged Bob Dylan.  Lots of it reminded me of Dr. Rockso, no joke.  I was hoping he would break down about doing "cuh-cuh-cuh-cuh-COCAINE."  Now I didn't like the vocals, but you are right in that his direct lyrics and minimalist lyrics are fantastic.  Had he been a better singer this song could've won the roulette.  Sorry, tyke.

Acidrainlte-1 Point
The Offspring-Gone Away
Not really what I was expecting or looking for in this round.  Despite that, the song was all right.  Lyrics were fine, groove was fine, song in general was just fine.  Unfortunately that was it.  Didn't get anything else from it.  Sorry.

NEXT ROUND: The theme is 1999.  Send me a song from this year that I haven't heard.  If you can't think of anything from that specific year, I'll give you a year in either direction to pick something from.

:heart I thought you'd love the song. That's why I wanted you to post the results so badly.  :lol Glad you liked it!

OH GOD 1999. I just looked at my albums from that year and I literally don't have anything you haven't heard, I don't think. A third of them are live, the other third are Porcupine Tree, and the others are joke music (The Simpsons and Pokemon... and Dream Theater :neverusethis:)

Yeah, I honestly have no idea what I'm gonna do for this round. I think I'm gonna have to find some music myself.  :lol

Whatever the sound issue was, it was caused by shitty youtube quality. That entire album (Materia, which I HIGHLY recommend) is a fantastic sounding record. Glad you enjoyed it. It's a personal favourite from Novembre. That entire album is genuinely melancholic as well.

Alright, 1999. Let's do this.

Waits isn't about the vocal ability.  I'd have no other singer sing those lyrics.

His voice is really the only one that is broken down, honest, and raw enough for words like those.  It's much of an acquired taste, but once you've grown friendly with his deep rasp, you really can't imagine life without it.

Also, you were probably sober.  You must be drunk and depressed on a rainy day to listen to Waits correctly.

What are your rules for this round? Will you accept live albums? Greatest hits?

Even looking at 98 and 00, I have some stuff you haven't heard but I don't think you'd like any of it.  :lol Worst comes to worst, I do have something I can send, but it was from an artist I sent in an earlier round and I'd rather not recycle artists if I can.

I'll still look around and see if I discover some more music.

Round 6 Results!

Gorille-5 Points
Unexpect-Orange Vigilantes
This song isn't as ADD as the other Unexpect songs you've posted around GMD before.  Those songs turned me off the band because they changed riffs what seemed to be every measure.  The music's still chaotic, but there's a bit more structure to it.  I love the jazzy piano bits and the strange rhythms that change almost constantly near the beginning of the song (reminds me a bit of what Mew likes to do).  The metal bits are great as well.  Like a combination of Diablo Swing Orchestra and a more upbeat version of Orchid and Morningrise, except better.  If the rest of the new album is like this it just might be what I need to really get into these guys.  The female vocals are really good, especially when she's growling with the dude.

ZBomber-4 Points
Shpongle - My Head Feels Like A Frisbee
Hey, these guys are actually playing a show in Asheville in May, I think.  Never heard them till now.  Sounded a bit like early Porcupine Tree, but without the cool guitar work, and a bunch of other strange instruments.  Pretty cool stuff.  Loved the transition at 3:45, as well as the spanish part at 5:00.  It just sneaks up on you without warning!  What's odd about this song is that I kind of zone out until a transition sneaks up on you and hits you in the face to say LOOK HOW COOL THIS NEW PART IS, then you just sort of zone out during the rest of that rhythm again, but in a good way, if that makes sense (and I don't think it does).

Voxyn-4 points
Vnv Nation-Legion
Okay, this was really cool.  The intro was simple, but effective, and the addition of the dance beat later on made that great vocal melody even better.  Liked the roughness in the singer's voice as well.  Very interesting contrast with the clean dancey electronics.

Acidrainlte-3 Points
Mr. Bungle-Ars Moriendi
More Mike Patton.  I'm not surprised.  First thought is HOLY SHIT AVANT GARDE and it keeps going like that for the rest of the song.  Its a hell of a lot more disjointed than Gorille's submission, and as a result I didn't know what the fuck was going on.  There were lots of cool parts, but really...wtf?  :rollin

Sigz-3 Points
The Avalanches-Frontier Psychiatrist
So this whole thing was made out of sampling old records?  Brilliant!  That takes mashups to a whole other level.  Really cool song that was unfortunately outclassed by that top three.

Antigoon-3 Points
Emmanuel & the Fear-Jimmie's Song
More indie as fuck music from Antigoon.  I AM NOT SHOCKED.  It was a good song though.  Liked the energy in it more than dtismajesty's equally indie-as-fuck song, but still, all I got from it was "nice."  Nothing really making me itch to check out more.

dtismajesty-2 Points
Her Name is Calla-The Sleeper
Actually think I've heard of this before.  Indie as fuck.  Nice song, though, but that's it.

Lateralus666-1 Point
Nevermore-The Heart Collector
First thing: badass title.  Second thing: the singer is pretty meh.  Its like he's trying to pull off some kind of Geoff Tate and Dug Pinnick hybrid, but sounds really really awkward instead and doesn't sound as powerful as he should.  The music wasn't that great either, IMO.  Out of the two metal bands you talk about a lot, Nevermore and Novembre, I much prefer Novembre.

ROUND SEVEN, THE PENULTIMATE ROUND!  SEND ME SOMETHING FOCUSED HEAVILY ON SYNTHS OR ELECTRONIC STUFF.

I'm sorry for being worse than Cole, Antigoon, and BrotherH combined on getting these results out on time.   :-\

Title: Re: Skydivingninja's Song Roulette ROUND SEVEN RESULTS FINALLY UP
Post by: skydivingninja on April 17, 2011, 09:27:06 PM
RESULTS!  Sorry I had a dragon to slay with the mighty Thundersword before I could listen to these lovely songs.

Gorille 10 gajillion points
Skydivingninja-Synthetic Sky
You win the roulette forever for not only finding the best song this round, but for finding the best artist in the world.  My life wasn't complete until just now!

Okay, but seriously, results.  Sorry I'm a failure at life.  My only hope is that ZBomber actually killed himself this time.

Laterlolus88 5 Points
Buckethead-Mausoleum Door
I know I asked for synth/electronic stuff, but when I saw you sent me Buckethead of all things I was a bit skeptical.  I mean, this is the same guy who wrote "Jordan," right?  Well I never knew he did stuff like this, and oddly, it kind of reminded me of Abstract in the Sky (if you don't know AitS, look no further than Volkie Poo).  Very cool, slightly spooky, and groovy, and the guitar noodling in the middle of the song was incredibly tasteful.

Gorille 4 Points
Massive Attack - Splitting the Atom
Someone recommended this to me after I commented about how much I liked Volk's album.  I can understand why.  That was really awesome as well!  Simple, good beat, dreamlike...not really sure what else to say about it.

Voxyn 4 Points
Kyte-ihnfsa
I think I was hooked by the first second.  The vocalist sounds like a combination of Mariuz Duda and Connor Oberst, but it really works well.  Excellent, excellent find.

ZedBomber 3 Points
The Pineapple Thief-Wake Up the Dead
I only have Tightly Unwound, and I remember it being somewhere between "all right" and "good," I don't remember it much, but if this is from their new album then they already remind me of Pure Reason Revolution, with some kind of new prog model of "release good first proggy album, then go electronic and shit and make good music like that."  Hopefully they avoid the third step of "get someone else to write all your songs, ignore the awesome female vocalist, lose your souls, and make a really REALLY disappointing third album," because this song grabbed me more than the whole last album and I'm curious to look at the whole thing (though, granted, I need to listen to it again).  My one complaint is that there isn't much of a low end, which could really bring the song to amazing heights.

AcidRainlte 3 Points
Polkadot Cadaver-Pure Bedlam for Half Breeds
I've heard you and Justin praise these guys endlessly.  I also know you're staying over at Ryan's just to see them.  I've heard some DFD and PC stuff before, so I really need to get some of their stuff, because this song was really awesome.  Wasn't exactly what I was thinking of for this round, but the beginning certainly counts enough. :D  I wanted to dance and headbang with all the absurdity of it all.

dtismajesty 3 Points
Krister Linder - Turning Daisies
Sure is indie in this roulette.  But it was good.  So good for you for not sucking.

Antigoon 2 Points
Ratatat-17 Years
I only know "Wildcat" from this band, and since this song is from the same album I might pick it up at some point.  This song is chock full of great, fun riffs, and I feel really bad for only giving it two points, but the others were just so strong...

Sigz 1 Point
Fennesz-Caecilia
Well aren't you all avant garde and indie as fuck?  Very atmospheric, which is always a plus.  It was a nice listen, but I think I'd need a whole album of this stuff rather than a standalone song, so it falls a bit flat compared to the other submissions.  Is there an album of it you'd recommend for me to really get a full Fennesz experience?

THE POINTS SO FAR
Gorille85-25
Sigz-24
ZBomber-24
Antigoon-23
Voxyn-22
Lateralus88-21
dtismajesty-18
acidrainlte-17

ALL RIGHT, FINAL ROUND.  My interest in Dream Theater was sparked by their really big, epic sound on SFAM, which I had grown to appreciate thanks to lots of classic rock bands who really knew how to construct climaxes to their songs.  If it weren't for DT and that epic feeling, I wouldn't have found my way here, and I wouldn't have discovered so many other amazing bands.  So now your challenge is this: send me something grand and epic.  Not necessarily in length, but in feel.  Think "Jungleland," "Deadhead," "Trial of Tears," "The Light and the Glass," "Take a Bow," "Butterflies & Hurricanes," "The Show Must Go On," etc. etc.

Not sure if you know, but The Pineapple Thief has released 8 albums, so there are actually 6 studio-albums released before Tightly Unwound. :P
Unlike your example with PRR (where the third album sucked so bad), TPT's latest album really is great, and you should check it out.  :tup

The only reason people don't talk about the earlier albums is because they are all really hard to find. They've been reissuing them though, so for people like me who prefer to buy music instead of download it, it's a good thing!

Iommi - I Go Insane
Didn't know you were a big classic heavy metal guy since you're not big on Maiden.  The song was really cool.  Loved the guitar solo intro and the 80s power ballad feel to it (which I can be a bit of a sucker for.  Why do think I love The Spirit Carries On so much?)  Hughes' voice was a bit of an odd choice until the chorus, but it grew on me quickly.  Loved that bass riff during the bridge as well.  Plenty of awesome heavy riffs after that, almost all of which I liked better than the classic Sabbath riffs I know.  Hughes really killed it on I DON'T WANNA BREATHE, YOU DON'T WANNA KNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOW!  :metal  And the bit after that had a really cool Opeth vibe to it.  Is the rest of his solo stuff up to this level of goodness?
Too bad that album cover is awful :P

Voxyn 4 Points
Mono - The Battle to Heaven
You know, I've known about Mono for a while (I introduced my next door neighbor to Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky and he wouldn't shut up about post rock for a year while I quickly fell out of love with the genre as a whole).  Mono was one of those bands where I actually did enjoy what I heard and my first thought wasn't "Explosions in the Sky ripoff.”  I now feel ashamed for not checking out their stuff before now.  Good find!

Antigoon 4 Points
Brad Mehldau - Dont Be Sad Scroll
Not really epic at all, but it was a really cool tune.  I don’t listen to nearly enough contemporary jazz (mostly just old fusion stuff and Coltrane, all on rare occasions), so this was definitely something new to me.  I’ll have to check out some more of this stuff.

Lateralus 3 Points
Wintersun - Sadness and Hate
First thought on seeing the cover art: LOLPOWERMETAL.  Then my next thought was LOLDEATHFOLKMETAL.  Very rarely can I take folk metal bands seriously.  They can make some cool sounding music, but it doesn’t always work for me the way swing metal does.  This was the same way.  I felt its length in quite a few places.

Seth 3 Points
Bearsarin Quartet -  Mehr Als Alles Andre
No idea what that song title means.  Not really sure I’d call this epic either.  But while the peaks never really reached epic height, they were certainly cool in a trancey way.

Zbomber 3 Points
Buckingham Nicks - Frozen Love
You might need some help for your Buckingham love .  Pretty good, but something must be wrong with all of you because I’ve gotten very few actually epic submissions.  So yeah, it was all right, but nothing Mangini-worthy.

Sigz 2 Points
The Angelic Process - Burning In The Undertow Of God
Fucking.  Badass.  Song.  Name.  Kind of reminded me of "Salvaging" from Insurgentes with all the noise, distortion, and ambiance going on.  But while that song makes its use of noise terrifying, I didn't get a real emotional jolt from it.  Sorry dude, but overall I didn't really like it much, but I do like the concept of it, if that makes sense.  Is there a better example of this kind of song/style, not necessarily from the same artist?

Gorillle 1 Point
Sikth - Wait for Something Wild
Probably should’ve mentioned that I don’t really like this band.  But I listened to the song to give ‘em another chance.  Well…they’re like a worse Unexpect.  Much worse.  And no ladies.  Or nine-string bass guitars.  Not doing anything for me.

Final scores:

ZBomber-27
Antigoon-27
Gorille85-26
Sigz-26
Voxyn-26
Lateralus88-24
acidrainlte-22
dtismajesty-21

God fucking dammit.

Just...shitcock!  All right, we need a tiebreaker for ZBomber and Antigoon.  Both of you send me an album I can find on grooveshark.  If ZBomber sends something Lindsey Buckingham related he'll automatically lose.  I'll get you the results in a month (only being realistic here...)

Secondly.

I felt its length in quite a few places.

For the sake of the other roulettes, you can just let Joe win if you want since he had the higher scored song this round, I  don't really care... I just wanted to participate in a roulette.  :P

Unless you really want me to send an album.

Yeah, but Joe wins like, everything all the time.  I want to give you a fighting chance unless you want to give the fuck up.

Sent you a PM, Matt. It's up to you, but honestly I really don't care all that much. Not like people remember who win these anyways.  :lol

I submitted an album I want him to check out anyways, regardless of what ends up happening.
