I just discovered this band from Tunisia and got their second album Desert Call which I've been listening to almost non stop for the last couple days. I found another thread about them from a couple years ago that went nowhere, but that was before Desert Call came out. It took a few thorough listens to really appreciate how good these guys are. I have to admit, I've been actually looking for quality prog with a middle east influence and finally found it. Of course the DT influence is very much alive as it is with other melodic prog metal bands such as Circus Maximus, Vanden Plas, Redemption, etc., but the addition of middle eastern percussion, vocal melodies, and instuments is what makes this band stand apart. I haven't yet delved much into the lyrics...still just digesting the vibe of it. Anyone else into this album? What do you think of it? Good or bad. At any rate, they are trying to become known internationally and I think they deserve their own thread.

bumping to say that the new album is great (though not as good as Desert Call imo).
definitely worth listening to.
-
Thanks for the bump BanksD. Just listened to Merciless Times. Sounds great. Has all the elements I like about this band. Looks like it will be released in the U.S. in 5 days. :metal
-
Awesome, didn't realise they had a new album out. :tup
I love the song 'Seven Sins' off their first album Hope, it's incredible :metal
-
I just discovered this band. Got Desert Call and Tales from the Sands, I'll be picking up their first album next order.
-
Huge fan here... Used them in one of the roulettes... didn't turn out well... Oh well.... I think they are awesome.
-
First album was awesome, second one, I really don't listen to it much, the new one, I like, but I preferred their original vocalist.
-
Got to give you a huge thank you for recommending this band. Checked them out on YT and have ordered the CD. Loved it. I've always been a sucker for the Middle-Eastern influence in music (Gates Of Babylon is a top 10 song) and cross that with DT style prog-metal and I'm all in.
Maybe DT heard this band and incorporated the sound into Outcry.
-
I absolutely LOVE this band. It's probably my obsession with folk/oriental prog metal (GREAT stuff, listen to Orphaned Land). Listening to Tales of the Sands right now, it's amazing.
-
Hey WindMaster, I love'em too... and oriental prog blows my mind.... Have you got any other bands to rec me? I'm gonna see Orphaned Land for the 2nd time next month..... me happy...
-
/jealousy
Check out Amaseffer, listen to Slaves for Life. They're more in the Folk/progressive metal vein as apposed to Orphaned Land which has death metal influences, but still awesome.
-
/jealousy
:lol :heart
Thanks for the recs.... check'em out now ..... WOW...nice.... thank you dear!
edit: WHOA :omg: :hefdaddy
-
IKR? Amaseffer is amazing.
-
Srsly.. thank you...
-
No prob.
-
Thanks for the heads up on Amaseffer. Really enjoyed it. I've always been a sucker for that middle eastern sound. Ritchie Blackmore's fault.
Can't get into Orphaned Land though. Not just the death vocals either.

Why not? Just interested.
-
I like it musically- just don't like either of the voices- clean or growl. Vocal melodies don't appeal to me either. Shame as I really like the music.
-
The bonus track "Fate in Motion" is streaming. Such an amazing band.

-
God dammit.

-
I hate you.
:heart

I know honey bun :heart

Bump, because, quite frankly, this band deserves this. I have just started listening to them after reading Elite's Top 50, and they have blown my mind. Both Tales of the Sand and Desert Call are :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Can't argue with that. DTF introduced me to them and I fell in love with it straight away. I've always had a thing for that Eastern sound. Blame Blackmore! :hefdaddy

Fuck yes. I love the eastern vibe of the Stargazer solo, for instance.
-
I actually like their debut the best, but yeah, great band :tup
-
I have Tales of the Sand and it is awesome.

Didn't like the debut one bit.

Funny, I rank them:
Desert Call > Hope >>>> Tales of the Sands.
Didn't expect the people here to love Tales of the Sands so much. I feel like the started to focus too much on Arabian-sounding gimmicks instead of good (progressive) songwriting.

It's the Arabian-sounding stuff I like. Good prog metal bands are two-a-penny and very boring these days.
-
It's the Arabian-sounding stuff I like.
ditto that. It's really cool to hear how they incorporate it into the music.
-
I just listened to Tales from the Sands.
On one level it seems like standard prog metal, but the arabian melodies give it some real flair and uniqueness.
-
Didn't realize this thread had been revived. Listening to me some Desert Call. :metal

Doesn't Desert Call have Arabian-stuff as well (along the better songwriting)? Your posts imply that Desert Call sounds like generic Prog Metal and Tales from the Sands suddenly adds something fresh to the mix that was missing before.

can't comment on Desert Call, as I only have TFTS
Someone mentioned TFTS has "Arabian-sounding gimmicks", Lowdz said he liked that stuff and I agreed.

All of their albums have "Arabian-sounding gimmicks" (it's the "thing" of the band), but TFTS doesn't have much else. Desert Call has the same "Arabian-sounding gimmicks" AND much better songwriting. If you enjoy TFTS, you should check out this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB9CaUoX-es

Not at all. Those two albums are excellent. The first album (Hope) I found to be poor.
-
I dig Hope too. It has maybe their two weakest (not weak) songs on it, but still. I really dig Confession for instance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb2jPYwzp-o
3:14 is fantastic, and I love the solo vibe.
Is it just me or is Desert Calls's mix extremely bright? I can never listen to it as loud as the other two records because of all the high end. Kinda weird, as the same guy mixed the first two records as I have understood it.
-
Well, I spent a good portion of the last week on vacation listening to Myrath, and I have to say that Desert Call has really grown on me, and I like it a little more than Tales of the Sands now. I especially like Memories, even though it's cheesy as hell. :symphonyx:
-
My copy of Hope has a fishy booklet. I have lyrics for Hope, Last Breath, Seven Sins and My inner War. The lyrics for Confession, Fade away and All my Fears are missing. Is this "normal", in the sense that all CDs have this fault and the label can't be arsed to fix it?
-
Wow, this thread is so old; how did I not catch it? Myrath is amazing. I have Desert Call and it's one of my favorite albums.

If I ever get around to unpacking my CDs, I'll let you know. Feel free to bug me my PM occasionally if I forget, it will be an easy check.
-
Just typed in "progressive metal" on YouTube, which I do sometimes to explore new bands, and I stumbled across Myrath's Tales of the Sands. Wow. This scratches me right where I itch for prog. Love it. "Time to Grow" is a killer tune!
-
Their first two albums are even better, imho. Tales of the Sand is very good, but it isn't as intricate and deep as the first two are. You should check out tracks like Seven Sins, My Inner War or Empty World for comparison, I find them to be on a whole different level.
-
Absolutely agree on that. Tales of the Sands is a good, shallow Prog/Power Metal crossover, but the previous two albums are serious business. Their debut is heavily underappreciated on this forum for being too much of a Symphony X knock-off, but I love it since it's actually a better SX album than what SX have producer over the past decade.
-
Myrath finally released a new tune today. I am really hyped for the upcoming album, coming next month.

-
Damn. Totally forgot they had an album coming up shortly, there's so much awesome stuff to look forward to.
Can't believe I still haven't looked into their first albums, as I really liked Tales of the Sands (especially the overall Arabian-sounding stuff, I'm a sucker for those elements).
New song sounds alright, the guitar solo is short but absolutely killer. Already liking this better than most of the prog-metal singles I've heard for upcoming albums, pretty excited for this album as well.
-
Great stuff! Really looking forward to seeing them support Symphony X in a few weeks. Didn't realise the new album was out so soon (3 days after I see them) - hope they still play plenty of older stuff, I'd love to see Seven Sins live. :metal
-
Hmm. Didn't love the new song. It was ok, just a little poppy, a bit sympho power metal lite.
-
Good hooky song, but I hope (like with CM's new song) that the style isn't too heavily pushed for the full album.
-
Heh, I feel like I am watching a videoclip for that Prince of Persia film (I like it).
Solid song, looking forward to their new album! Totally forgot about them. For some reason I like the softer chorus reprisal along with some epic sounds during the credits the most (5:26 onwards, after the clip). Love this guy's voice.
-

Same thoughts.

Not just you. I had to turn the treble setting way down
-
I listened to the Legacy album for the first time right now. This is the best first listen I've ever had with a record. I really like The Astonishing, but this is without any doubt my favorite album of the year so far. All the Tunisian elements make this album so good. Really great melodies all over, and I even dig the ballads. Hopefully there won't be another 4.5 years until the next one.
-
Just found out about this band through Spotify, so I had no idea that legacy was a thing. It's not there for some reason. Love their music so far
-
Was immediately intrigued by the 'Middle Eastern influences' part, took one listen to one track from Desert Call on Youtube and now I've bought the album, not regretting it for a second :metal
-
Desert Call is their best imo, but all their three albums that I know are stellar (I haven't listened to Legacy yet).
-
I'm guessing they all have a pretty similar sound?
-
Their first is more in a Symphony X vein (though better than many recent SX releases) whereas their third has stronger oriental influences than the previous two albums, but it's also less proggy and I find the songwriting to be a little less interesting - still a good album though.
-
Saw these guys in support of Symphony X last night and they rocked! Awesome band, great show!
-
Loving Desert Call! Gotta be one of my best blind buys ever :metal :metal :metal
-
I know, right? Have to say when they got on stage, I couldn't help but think wtf>? because both drummer, bassplayer and singer all look so small, but when they started playing I was duly impressed!
-
Well, Legacy rules.
-
Yeah, this new album is easily their best to date and I think it may even be a contender for album of the year.
-
Must just be me then. I was underwhelmed on first listen. It all sounded so poppy and upbeat. Need to give it another listen obviously.

I still need to listen to this. The reviews around the place seem to vary from full marks (mostly) to rubbish and not much in between,
-

tbh I'd struggle to pick a favourite out of the 4. They're all the best for slightly different reasons for me.
-
Had a listen last night and enjoyed it more than my 1st listen. I thought it was quite straight forward - not as prog metal as previously.
-
Just bought Hope, Tales of the Sands and Legacy. I've been bored with the music I've been listening to over the past few months and felt like looking into a different progressive metal band to listen to. I've heard of Myrath, but never really checked them out before...that was a mistake.
I'm completely blown away - I love finding bands that inject a little originality or something different into their sound. And Zaher is an awesome singer as well!
-
You're still missing their best album, Desert Call. I'd definitely recommend it.
I found Legacy to be little boring, but it was still solid. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood, I should give it another chance.
Their first three albums are where it's at for me, with Desert Call being the clear standout.
-
I got into them after seeing them live with Symphony X last year. Stunning live band. I don't have their first two albums yet, but TOTS and Legacy are both nothing short of incredible.

I was the same with Legacy - found it straight forward and poppy - sort of a Within Temptation sound. On further plays I came to love it.
I love the intro. If anyone can recommend some music in a similar vein to the intro I'd be very happy.
-
Orphaned Land - Building the Ark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMY8YqLHlkU)? It's not entirely the same, but the same type of oriental feel to it at least. Most of their music has harsh vocals though, so I doubt you'd like their 'regular' songs.

I have tried them and enjoyed Mabool a lot. I was meaning more the oriental instrumental

Many of you may already know by now, but we are thrilled to confirm, YES! Myrath is in the process of recording the new album, and the title and release date will be announced very soon!
Malek has just finished casting his guitar magic, and Morgan will start recording drums today!
We can hardly contain our excitement about the final result! It will blow your minds !!! But until then we'll keep you updated with pics and videos along the way!
Stay tuned for a truly magical musical experience, and as always, believe and carry on!
:metal

Cool... I bought their discog at PPUSA LAST YEAR. Wasn't able to go and see them this year sadly. Great band/music.
-
Myrath is an incredible live band. I saw them at ProgPower USA a few years ago, and they came out and took everyone by surprise. This year they were probably even better; they had the biggest crowd of the festival as well.
-
Doesn't seem that long since the last one, but I love this band.
-
Shehili is out today. Luckily received my Japanese copy in the morning, and it really is a great record. No tracks I'd like to skip yet again, which says something. One of the few bands that IMO doesn't have any filler tracks (even if some tracks are better than others). It definitely isn't a minimalistic record, which I like. Catchy as hell, they know how to write melodies and riffs. The band may not be as proggy as in the beginning, but it really is an experience to listen through the album nonetheless. So many nice details to discover. Another thing I noticed is the use of slap bass on several of the songs, which is cool considering the genre. No overuse, but it really adds a little nice flavor here and there.
-
Had my first listen. First impressions are it’s very good. One of my favourite bands.
-
Had a spin today, nice but didn't really grab me so far.
Relistened to Hope for the first time in years. Reminded me how much I prefer old Myrath.
Why did they have to turn into Power Metal :'(
-
One of my favorite "new" bands, I discovered them last year. I completed my first listen of the album, so far sounds great! I really enjoyed every song, although I still cannot set them apart. My only favorite so far: Lili Twil.
-
Sampled on Spotify.
Instant purchase 4 songs in.
Love it.
-
I listened to the new one a few days ago and tbh I like it a lot more than the last one. Not as good as Tales of the Sands but I feel they're much more comfortable with the newer "poppier" conservative sound they have. Percussion and vocals were the highlights. There are some wicked drum/percussion parts and the vocal melodies are, for the most part, fantastic.
-
What an awesome album.
-
Feels very much in the same vein as Legacy, which I loved. Great stuff.
-
Up there for AOTY already. I don’t count DoT as it’s DT and an instant win.
-
So they filmed a show from the Sheheli tour in Carthage - it was originally included with some European magazine, but now it has an official live CD/DVD release.
The DVD is absolutely fantastic. I've only watched it once, but it's an incredible performance, venue, and they have a a belly dancer as well. :heart Definitely recommended for anyone that enjoys this band!
Dance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9MrrkTqJ8
-
I’ve had this a while from the website. Excellent show.
-
Nice! That is something I completely missed, those clips look and sound good!
-
I agree! Those clips look and sound awesome! I really like this band, along with Orphaned Land, they fill my need for middle eastern-sounding music.
-
Myrath new album Karma, slated by Feb 2, 2024 is available for review.
