Title: cthrubuoy's song roulette - [On Hold]
Post by: cthrubuoy on February 06, 2011, 01:50:42 PM
Here we go. It's been a long time coming... but I shall now start my song roulette.

Participant list:
Jamesman
Gorille85
zxlkho
jsem
dtismajesty
AcidRainLTE
DTVT

This roulette will be 7 rounds because we have 7 players. Each round will give the winner 6 points, 2nd place 5, 3rd - 4, 4th, 3, 5th - 2, 6th - 1, and 7th - 0 (I'm hoping the zero score for last place will push people that little extra for something a little better.)
Submissions to be made within 4 days of the round being put up. I wont be too strict on this though. Send me a PM if you're busy, know you can't access the internet for a while or whatever. If I get chance tomorrow, I'll type up all the rounds and update the OP to give you an idea of what's to come and you could even send in advance.

Songs will be rated on adherence to the rounds criteria, and personal taste as usual.

My last.fm for reference is:
https://www.last.fm/user/cthrubuoy
No artists to be submitted that have 100 or more plays on this last.fm

So what am I looking for in this roulette? I've been stuck in a bit of a musical rut the past few months. Listening to the same songs by the same bands again and again. Hopefully this will expand my music horizons to new bands, genres and whatever else you may bring to the table.
My taste in music has varied dramatically over the last few years, but a few key factors have remained.
Guitars are an important part of the music I listen to. As I guitarist myself, this is what I listen out for in a song (the first few listens at least).
I'm also a massive fan of drumming. I could watch virtuoso drummers all day and night. It isn't a necessity for a song to include this, but the occasional OMG WOW fill wouldn't go amiss.

Copied word for word from ariich's roulette...
Submissions should, ideally, be Grooveshark or Spotify links (if you don't know how to use either, PM me and I can explain), but youtube links are also ok. Again, ideally these should be official links so that I can post them in the results posts, but if the only thing you can find is an unofficial link, that's fine, I just wont' be able to post it publicly.

So lets let round 1 begin. As usual... open submissions.

Update:

To give you more time to decide, here are the round themes in advance. Please don't send until the round itself opens though.

Round 2 - Dynamics - Make of that what you will.

Round 3 - Instrumental - As it says on the tin

Round 4 - Funky - Doesn't have to be 'Funk', just something with a nice groove maybe? Or a song that has a funky section? A great example could be that section in the Lotus Eater by Opeth.

Round 5 - Deviating from the norm - Again, completely open to interpretation but I'm looking for something outside the box, different, something fresh.

Round 6 - Epic - This could be song length, content, lyrical theme, etc.

Round 7 - Make me cry - As this is the last round, I want you to send a song to depress me. Scores will be based on number of tissues needed (INB4 the obvious)

Edit: Send. Saving lengthy songs for other situations.

As you mentioned it, yes, there'll probably be a round for epics/lengthy songs.

Sorry...I've had a rough past two days.  What's your position on things you have on last.fm, but have few listens or from albums artists you have listed but not from an album you have heard.  Lots of bands with very few listens...I hope they aren't out of play.

I'll have a top choice and a back-up ready tomorrow depending on how you respond.

Last.fm has scrobbled pretty much everything I've listened to in the last few years. If it's not on there, chances are I've never heard it.

Few listens doesn't necessarily mean I didn't like the artist, more that I haven't given them a real chance.

Send whatever you want to send!

I would have said something like 'no artists with x or more listens on last.fm', just pick what the threshold should be. Something like 10 or 15 maybe.

Fastest write-ups in the West to get this back on track.
Apologies for the delay, but Quinsy is pretty nasty

Jamesman - Future of Forestry - So Close, So Far
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/So+Close+So+Far/2HkqXY?src=5
I'd definately agree with very catchy and very fun on this song. I really liked that clap/drum intro kicking the song off. When the bass started in it reminded me a bit of Tool (don't read too much into this. I think it was just the bass sound, who knows?), but then when the guitar and vocals joined in it reminded me of Muse. I love both those bands so I think that's why this clicked instantly with me.
That chorus was really 'nice', an uplifting melody and some catchy lyrics to match. I'd be interested in checking out more songs by this artist as I've listened to this one a good few times and still not been bored by it.

6 Points

Gorille85 - Gojira - Vacuity
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Vacuity/1TQDbH?src=5
Gojira is a band I've heard a lot about but never listened to.
I liked the sound of the intro when the song started, it's a really nice pounding metal sound guarunteed to get the head moving. The singing put me off slightly, especially the chorus but but the music made up for it in no time at all.
When the song kicked in towards the end, I really got into the groove. That section at 3:14 is one of the reasons this went from 3rd to 2nd from my initial rankings.

5 points

dtismajesty - Intronaut - Above
https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Above/3hfvPE?src=5
This one started off with some really nice drumming and atmospheric guitar/vocals. It was a little bit generic but that didn't seem to put me off. It sounded like it was going to go heavy very early on in the song and I'm quite glad it didnt, it built up a lot of that atmosphere I mentioned, and it was nice to hear some interesting drumming to simpler sections of music for a change.
When it did eventually go heavier it got slighly repetetive, becoming one of the reasons that it swapped out with the 2nd place song.

4 points

DTVT - Slough Feg - Hardworlder
(No Grooveshark Link)
When you said folk metal I got really excited. The song didn't quite live up to my expectations, but was very enjoyable none-the-less.
It sounded like Iron Maiden had smoked pot for a bit too long, and I'm not an Iron Maiden fan unfortunately. (Pot on the other hand...)
Some sections were very nice. The 3:00 harmonising guitar section reminded me a bit of Thin Lizzy, and the guitar/vocal melodies at 2:00 I really enjoyed. This was much more of a grower though and took 3/4 listens to really get in to.

3 points

AcidRainLTE - Textures - Awake
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Awake/2C4zv2?src=5
At first this sounded a bit like Nu-Metal attempt at a ballad, a kind of 'Killswitch Engage post-"End of Heartache" attempt at being all sentimental'. I really wasn't very impressed until 2:07, when it went heavy. It was a little bit too 'hardcore' for me but it did grow on me towards the end. It seemed like the atmosphere wasn't created until after that heavy section even though they were playing alomost the same things as in the first section of the song. I can't quite put my finger on it. Overall not a bad effort though.

2 points

jsem - Dave Brubeck - Blue Rondo a la Turk
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Blue+Rondo+A+La+Turk/2D4s4o?src=5
I've never really listened to jazz before so I didn't know what to expect when listening to this. I didn't quite get it I don't think. There were some nice musical ideas going but the song itself didn't seem to go anywhere.
It ended up dragging on a bit unfortunately which is why I've placed it so low in the rankings.

1 point

zxlkho - Neurosis - Eye
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Eye/3x4EtK?src=5
Where to start? This song sounded a bit like how I felt in hospital. Agony, pain... and that's not a good thing.
I thought maybe it would pick up into something listenable but it didn't.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of heavy, and some extremely heavy bands (Necrophagist to name one) but this didn't grip me at all. In fact, it's the only of the 7 entries I actually wanted to turn off.
Letters, you spoke of good riffs in the message you sent but I think maybe we were listeneing to different songs.
I'm a little bit disappointed because I think you're my highest match on last.fm compatibility. Maybe next time eh?

0 points

Standings:
Jamesman - 6
Gorille85 - 5
dtismajesty - 4
DTVT - 3
AcidRainLTE - 2
jsem - 1
zxlkho - 0

So, on Round 2 - Dynamics. I promise not to fall ill before posting the results of this round.

And damn you dtismajesty...I was planning on sending Intronaut later. I find it interesting that I would have sent different Intronaut and Gojira songs from the same album.  Guess it just shows that those are might fine albums.

Sending soon probably.  I don't like ambiguous rounds...its too open to interpretation.  Sad is easy to figure out...cool solos, riffs, fills, time era, and other concrete definitions are easy to deal with.  I'm not quite sure what to do with this round.

Overall, this was a much tighter round than the first. I had to spend a good amount of time deciding which tracks I liked more to sort out the points awarded. Even the 7th placed song I liked to a certain degree.

DTVT - Enslaved - Waruun
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Waruun/3u7wjG?src=5

I didn't think I'd like this song when it started. I've never really listened to much Black metal and I was worried it would be a bit too 'evil' for me, especially with a band name like 'Enslaved'. Luckily, my preconceptions were way off.
I really liked the staccato disharmonic chord as you put it. The growling didn't put me off either, as it doesn't in most bands of a similar genre. I think this my be due to the fact that there was clean vocals mixed in as well. I thought it worked really well. I also really enjoyed the simple but effective outro. I can definitely see myself listening to more of these in the future.

dtismajesty - Demians - Hesitation Waltz
https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Hesitation+Waltz/2Uc84G?src=5

Two submissions of the same band in the same round? Interesting. I much preferred this to letters' choice. I felt this had a lot more atmosphere going for it. I really liked the way that it built up all the way through the song. In a way (a very strange way that maybe no one else will see) it reminded of the build up in Wing for Marie by Tool (please tell me someone else sees this?). Also, the vocal pop rock issues I had with the song letter sent me were not even remotely an issue. I'm a bit unsure as to what to make of the band after hearing two entirely different sides to them. I hope the rest of their discography is more sided with this track though.

5 points

jsem - Antonio Vivaldi - Four Seasons, Winter, 1st mvt
https://open.spotify.com/track/3mZ3LhX72yZO4Q1vOk6bKy

Out of all the tracks sent this round, this is the only one I'd heard before. I accepted it as a submission though because I'm not particularly familiar with it, having only heard it a very small number of times.
Classical music can take dynamics to a new level, and I think this was an excellent example of that. I really liked the violin, which may be because I used to play myself (although not anywhere near this level).
The melodies were outstanding in this piece, and obviously the dynamics worked in its favour as well. But even considering all this, I still couldn't find it in myself to place it at the top.

4 points

Jamesman - Superior - Not With Me
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Not+With+Me/ggRjT?src=5

Probably the most interesting guitars of this rounds submissions. As a guitarist, that immediately pushed it up in my rankings. I also liked the main up-tempo riff. You mentioned that it was initially labelled as a DT track? I didn't see that resemblance at all. So whoever decided to label it as such obviously hadn't heard either band.
Really enjoyed that cool little bass part about halfway through the song. Gave it an interesting extra dimension.

AcidRainLTE - Devin Townsend - Life is all Dynamics
https://open.spotify.com/track/4s2AjjkSTDwBi6OCnQUxgf

I've heard a few songs by Devin before. Numbers tried to get me to listen to his stuff, I wasn't too impressed with what I heard. Then one of my friends showed me a different album, and I really enjoyed it. His music is a bit hit and miss with me, much like the sections of this song. I'm not really a fan of the verse with the light and airy background vocals, but I do like the wall of sound chorus type section. He creates some really great atmosphere, and an epic sound that I haven't heard anyone else replicate. This was originally tied in its position, but I pushed this up for for including 'dynamics' in the song title. Nice touch.

zxlkho - Demians - Naive
https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Naive/2v1YOD?src=5

I'd never even heard of this band when you sent me the link. I was honestly crossing my fingers that it wasn't similar to your last track :P
The song starts well with a nice acoustic intro, and then slams you in the face with the distorted guitar, then back to the acoustic guitar for the verse. The riffs over the verses were pretty cool as well. The only real problem I had with this song was the pop rock vocals. I apologize if that's offensive, but it was a bit too 'Creed' for me. Not a bad song by any stretch of the imagination, but not the best of the round. Also, there wasn't much substance to the song; Verse Chorus repeat. I would have liked to have heard at least a bridge section to fill it out a bit. Maybe that's the prog fan coming out in me?

1 point

Gorille85 - dredg - Bug Eyes
https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/search?q=dredg%20bug%20eyes

A band I've heard a lot about but never had the time nor inclination to listen to. This song didn't cement a need to listen to them any more than putting me off listening to them. I quite enjoyed it but unlike some of the others, it didn't quite click. I think that with time, and possibly some of their other tracks, I'd enjoy this style of music a lot more though. Plus points were the atmospheric guitars throughout.

I'd just like to emphasise that even 7th place I liked to a certain degree. There weren't any complete disasters like the first round (not mentioning any names, letters :neverusethis: ).

Results after round 2:

dtismajesty - 9
DTVT - 9
Jamesman - 9
jsem - 5
Gorille85 - 5
AcidRainLTE - 4
zxlkho - 1

As you may have noticed, and as stated above, I'm sucking at these deadlines. I'll try and be as quick as possible putting up the results but I've been having some issues getting to a PC that I can listen to the submissions on. This round I downloaded the grooveshark Android app so I could listen while away from my PC to get things sped up a bit. If all submissions are in tomorrow, I should be fine getting the results up on the weekend, but if not (and I honestly don't expect everyone to send me their submission in one day), there may be a few days delay getting the results to you. Just to warn you in advance.

So on to round 3! Instrumental. Pretty obvious here that I'm asking for an instrumental track. It's not genre specific so don't feel it needs to be a Dream Theater type instrumental.

Glad you liked Enslaved.  Like I said, Enslaved and Agalloch both really broke down my misconceptions about black metal.

Also, for clarification:  Jamesman sent the song "Not With Me" by the band Superior, and it is from the album Younique...in case anyone was looking for it.

Also, sent.  I've had this one in mind for a while.

cthrubuoy, give Bug Eyes another go or 2. But I'd also check out a few other dredg songs before fully forming any opinion about them. "Quotes" "The Canyon Behind Her" and "Yatahaze" are a few good ones.

I did say that I liked 7th place (dredg) as well. First time round listening to them they placed a lot higher, but a second listen didn't sit as well with me. I will try them out again though, as I will with the majority of submissions in this roulette.

Since you asked, Demians' first album, "Building an Empire" is closer to the song Letters sent, and the one I sent is closer to the content on "Mute".

But if you had issues with the "rock pop vocals" you won't find that in many of their songs at all, so that's not to worry.
