Title: Pendragon v. This Green and Pleasant Thread
Post by: Nick on January 27, 2011, 08:29:53 PM
https://www.pendragon.mu/

Website got re-designed and there are some clips from the forthcoming album "Passion"!

Aside from the first minute of the second clip I'm really digging it.

Sounds awesome. Did anyone else notice the change they made to the album art? I think it looks much better this way.

Nice to see some of the noobs have great taste since a large number of regulars don't give a crap about this awesome band.

I did not, what was the change?

Still a noob then am I?  :P

I actually got Pure on your recommendation. Having trouble finding their other stuff though, but I love Pure.

I believe it had two intertwining tongues which looked hideous. Now it just sort of has that beam of light.

Ummm.....I'll try to find that original cover I saw.

Edit:

I think it look terrible this way.

Ah, an improvement I'd say, but at the expense of making the cover very Division Bell-ish. And no, I was not calling you a noob, was more referring to the two that posted before you.

While Pure is good I can say that if you like that you're in for a HUGE treat when you get some of the classic albums.

True, but I think this cover makes more sense relative to the title.

And no, I was not calling you a noob, was more referring to the two that posted before you.

Just messin' with ya man. I didn't take any offence.  :lol

While Pure is good I can say that if you like that you're in for a HUGE treat when you get some of the classic albums.

Yeah, I've really been looking hard for their older stuff, but even for prog it's tough to find. Any specific album recommendations. They seem to have a decent sized back-catalog, so one or two to start with would be lovely.

Wow, just wow. I have their "The World" album which i thought was quite good - especially "The Voyagea but to be completely honest I had "filed" the CD away and forgotten about them. I was doing a bit of random surfing on Youtube and found them by accident and  to say I wasnt blown away by Pure (which I have now bought) would be the understatement of the year. What a transformation. The clips of Passion sound fantastic aswell. Cant wait.

I bought both Pure and Passion at the same time a few weeks back (they were my introduction to the band, btw) and was pleasantly surprised. Overall I liked Pure a bit more. The beginning of Indigo is badass and the first half of Space Cadet is quite catchy.

I have never heard of Pendragon before, but I was out shopping today and wanted something new to listen to.  On a whim, I saw the CD/DVD version of Pure while browsing and liked the look of the cover and packaging.

I must say, I'm listening to it for the first time and this is absolutely amazing.  Fresh sound, great atmosphere and excellent chops.  After looking the band up to my surprise they have been around for over 30 years!!  Gonna pick up more from them, what should I get next?
Title: Re: New Pendragon website and album

The Masquerade Overture, The World, and The Window of Life are the three classics. I suggest very highly starting with my first suggestion in that string as it's fucking amazing.

The first Pendragon album I listened to was The Masquerade Overture and it completley blew my mind away. That would be my recommendation but the other 2 albums Nick suggested are also pretty good.

The first I heard was Not of this World and I was hooked. Not that big of a fan of the albums before that I must say but everything since Not of this World is worth listening to so if you don't like the "classic" albums recommended above make sure you check that one, Believe and the latest one.

Also, you know what's better than a Pure CD?

Pure on indigo colored vinyl signed by the entire band. :D

Very nice.  I'm hoping I can score another cd or 2 of theirs this weekend.  If not it's back online I go.  After listening to a couple of their earlier tracks, is it safe to say that Pure is a different direction for them?

Seriously underrated band and album.  Nick's not the best singer in the world, but I really love his vocals a lot, fits the music really well.  Sounds a lot like Kai Hansen in his low range.
Title: Re: New Pendragon website and album

Believe started them on a newer sound, and Pure really broke them away from their traditional mold. Passion doesn't sound just like Pure but continues in a somewhat more experimental direction for them.

:lol I'm sorry.

It was a really awesome night though. When I saw them at RoSfest I spent WAAAAAAAAAY too much money on them. I needed the first two albums, which I bought, plus the special event shirt they had, a hoodie, a pick set, and that colored vinyl. I think I dropped over $100 on them that day. But the meet and greet was awesome and they are really good live, so see them if you have the chance.

Really digging Passion at the moment.  It's taking more spins that Pure, and overall I think Pure is better, but that was my first Pendragon album.  Loving the title track and Empathy which is great, seems like Indigo 2 or something.  I like Nick's spoken rap thing too, and the solo is killer.

Really enjoy Green and Pleasant Land.  A nice commercial touch which actually reminds me of Oasis a bit in the chorus, killer song.  I still have World and Overture to listen to too.  :metal

New dvd for 2012

"Out Of Order Comes Chaos" March 2012 on dvd and Blu-Ray

As previously announced Metal Mind Productions will release the brand new DVD. The Live DVD entitled  "Out Of Order Comes Chaos” will be available in March 2012. It contains a show recorded in Katowice during the Polish leg of the tour promoting the band’s most recent album “Passion”. For the first time in their career live material will be released also on a Blu-Ray. The DVD and Blu Ray, as well as a 2 CD set will be available through the Pendragon website.

Nick Barrett: "We've tried to do material that we haven't played very much before, particularly in Poland, and for the DVD we've changed the set drastically so that people don't buy the new DVD and just get the same songs as the last one. In fact it's probably the best dvd we've ever made , lights, visuals and sound are stunning"

Here is the final tracklist:

1. Passion
2. Back in the Spotlight
3. Ghosts
4. Not of this World
5. Comatose
6. If I Were the Wind
7. Freakshow
8. Empathy
9. This Green and Pleasant Land
10. Shane
11. Feeding Frenzy
12. Nostradamus
13. Last Man on Earth
14. Indigo
15. Prayer
16. Paintbox

Yummy.

After spinning Passion over and over, it might just be beating Pure for me.  Green and Pleasant land has become my fav song from both of these albums, it's absolutely amazing, the chorus, the melodies, the atmosphere are perfect, and I think Nick's yodelling at the end somehow fits the subject matter and atmosphere of the song.  I think I like it more than Indigo and Freakshow.

Listening to Overture for the first time.  This is a great, great prog band, why are not many people here into them?  Love the arrangements, the melodies and the overall lighter atmosphere of this one.  Really liked Paintbox and The Shadow.  What an amazing band.

Having a listen to Overture (at least, what's available of it on Grooveshark).  Liking.  When I first listened to them (Passion), I was expecting something heavier, so was disappointed.  Now that I'm listening to them as more of a purist prog band (like Yes), I'm really digging it.  Listening to Guardian of my Soul right now.   :tup

This is true, and I'm usually one of those people, but I'm loving Pendragon.  They are like a cross of Marillion, Yes, Magnum and Rush.

Magnum aren't prog, they are british AOR rock, but have strong melodies and keyboards similar to what I'm hearing in Overture.  More simple songs structures but catchy hooks and a lot of enjoyable albums.  Check On A Storytellers Night.  If you don't like that, then don't bother with them.

I'm checking out some songs by these guys right now.  I'd heard a song (or two) from Passion back when it dropped and I wasn't all that impressed, but the songs I've heard from Pure have been really, really good.  They have a very fresh sound, one that's obviously influenced by the 'classic' bands but they have enough of their own that they don't sound like they're just mimicking the greats.  I might have to pick up Pure sometime soon.

Having heard only Believe, Pure and Passion (which have really grown on me, btw), I gotta ask, is this one of those bands where the lead singer was in his prime when they were going in the 80s/90s? Because his voice always sounds like it's being strained or doesn't have much range. Doesn't bring the music down for me at all, but it does stick out to me.

From what I've heard that's Nick's voice, on Overture he sounds the same.  In fact, I'd say he sounds better on Pure and Passion, fits that sort of darker music well.  It's an acquired taste, and yes, he is not the best vocalist in the world, but I think it fits his band perfectly and don't have any problems with his vocals.  Nick actually reminds me of Kai Hansen in his lower range.

Nick will be able to answer the question more accurately though.

Nick reminds me a lot of Neal Morse in that his strength doesn't lie in his range or raw talent. On older albums he had a real knack for great melodies and on newer material he has more emotion and edge to pull him threw.

Giving this a bump because I really keep coming back to Pendragon a lot lately.  Plus they just released their new DVD which is killer.  I'm still discovering the albums I have but I'm hooked on all of these songs;

Indigo
Freak Show
Walls of Babylon
Masters of Illusion
Green and Pleasant Land
Paintbox
As Good As Gold
The Shadow
Breaking the Spell
The Voyager
Shane

Nick is one hell of an underrated guitarist.  :metal

Wicked. I was just listening to Masquerade Overture the other day. I don't listen to Pendragon enough, but when I do, I'm always.  :omg: and  :hefdaddy

Good to see a Pendragon thread here. Great band, with a distinctive-sounding vocalist. I bought The Masquerade Overture about a year ago, and I love it! Especially Paintbox and Guardian of My Soul. I will get around to buying more of their albums in due time. Perhaps starting with Men Who Climb Mountains.

MO was my first Pendragon album and I liked it but it didn't blow me away. It was very Marillion-y but a bit too folk music-y, maybe in the vocals.
Pure is a great album though. I like this new track and will probably get this album.

Definitely check out Passion man if you liked Pure.

Digging the new Pendragon a lot. Outstanding soloing in Truth and Lies. There's some Hogart-like moments in this album. There's a song where I thought H was singing but it is Nick.

Is it better than the last one?  Last one was a major letdown after Pure and Passion.

Wow, I totally missed there was a new album out. It's not in the online music services unfortunately and I'm not a fan of paying for an album before I listen to it. :-\

Love Over Fear is a pretty good album. I've only listened to it twice, so I haven't fully digested the tunes yet. Feels a bit like a return to the classic sound of The World thru Not Of This World. 360 Degrees is definitely an anthemic sing-along, like Nostradamus (Stargazing).

I've also been reacquainting myself with Men Who Climb Mountains. That album now feels like a halfway step between the heaviness and guitar-dominance of Passion and its few predecessors, and the "softer" proggier sound of Love Over Fear.

Changing the subject, but still Pendragon-related...a few years ago I attempted to buy The World, in a 2013 reissue, but the tracks were all offset by 2 minutes or so, and the first two minutes were cut from the beginning of the album. I sent that one back, and I've been scared to try again in case it winds up being a bad copy again. They have not been pulled from sale at all, despite the obvious fault. I have to make sure it's an original 1991 copy, or else I'm not buying.

Yes. It's definitely way better than Men Who Climb Mountains.

For what it's worth, I really like Men Who Climb Mountains. Not as much as NOTW or MO, but certainly more than Passion. I don't think metal suits Pendragon well, really, and they were trying to be something they're not on that album. They're a prog band, not a metal band.

I discovered them with Pure and still think it's unbelievable.  I'm the opposite, I think that style works really really well for them.

I'll check this new one out.
