The time has come. I'm going to be updating this multiple times a day with a few each (well, until like #20 or something), mainly because I'd rather make multiple smaller write ups over the course of a day rather than one big one.
The list itself is about as 'all time' as I could make it, rather than just my opinion right now. I've been sitting on the list for months, so I have some perspective on it and I think I'm pretty happy with it.
And finally, yes, there are repeats of artists. So without further ado, the first three:
50. Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness: I originally found Light of Day, Day of Darkness in the midst of my extreme prog nerd phase back in high school, and while the album is closer to symphonic metal than prog rock it still blew me away. Over the course of an hour Green Carnation manages to cover an incredible range of music, from gothic and symphonic metal to solo female vocal spots to eastern influenced music. Throughout the hour long epic there are numerous highlights, but it never feels as if you're just waiting to get through to the climax; the song is consistently captivating – quite a feat for such a long piece.
49. Gregor Samsa - Rest: Gregor Samsa's second venture is perhaps even more diverse than their debut album, with far more diverse instrumentation including clarinets, violins, cellos, xylophones, along with the usual post-rock setup. The result is a much more ethereal and nebulous sound, one that works brilliantly. The album is rather unsettling, but not in the usual 'end of the world' that many post-rock bands have; it's much more personal, and frankly much more effective.
48. Unexpect - In A Flesh Aquarium: Sorry its's not higher Gorille. In a Flesh Aquarium, as most of you probably know it due to Gorille's tireless pimping out, is a fucking awesome album. While the music is still completely psychotic, there's tightness and clarity in the music that's rather surprising considering you're hearing a seven piece band play. The music never sounds careless or thoughtless, but rather organized and thought out. While Dream Theater may claim that their music is 'systematic chaos', Unexpect easily takes that descriptor and executes it much better.
-
Sigz, you are truly awesome and i will follow this. :tup
Already got Unexpect and Gregor Samsa, hopefully i'll get more recommendations from this thread.
-
I'm looking forward to some Bjork
-
Can't wait for the copious amounts of classic and thrash metal.
-
MAKING A PREDICTION
The Alchemy Index is #1
-
RUMOURS
NAO
Actually, no wait.... don't do Rumours until the top 10 or I WILL STAB YOU
-
Room Noises, Alchemy Index, and Deadwing in the Top 5. Calling it.
-
50 and 48 kick ass. Haven't heard 49.
-
I won't be surprised if the entire top 5 and most of the top 10 is called by the time we get there. It should be fairly predictable for anyone who's familiar with my tastes.
-
lolchoirsoftheeye
-
lolchoirsoftheeye
I was just going to say something along these lines.
-
You'll have to see...
Though I'm more interested to hear what people think will be in the middle/high ones (30-5).
-
Looking forward to this list a lot.
-
I doubt I'll be familiar with very much on this list, but I'm interested in following it anyway.
-
Room Noises, Alchemy Index, and Deadwing in the Top 5. Calling it.
Definitely.
Other predictions
Kayo Dot-Choirs of the Eye (its the one with Wayfarer on it, which I remember Sigz loves, which I remember from his webcomic)
Maudlin of the Well-Leaving Your Body Map or Bath
Devin Townsend-Ziltoid the Omniscient
Thrice-Beggers and Vheissu
Opeth-Blackwater Park
I keep forgetting about Maudlin, and every time I listen to Part the Second its blown me away, so I'll look at this list for an album recommendation.
-
You people are forgetting The Mantle by Agalloch, and probably something by Ulver, i'm guessing Blood Inside.
-
Oh right, forgot about that Agalloch album.
-
UPDATE THE THREAD ALREADY
-
Choirs of the Eye is the greatest album ever.
Nice to see Gregor Samsa too, I hope 55:12 will be here too, but higher
-
I will be amazed if I recognize five albums on this list, but as a personal favor to you sigz, I will give some of the artist on the list a listen.
-
I'm really happy that you started this list. Looking forward to it a lot since you have great tastes in music! :tup I'll be checking the albums I'm familiar with too.
Also, very nice to see Unexpect on the list! :) IaFA is indeed the sex. Green Carnation is awesome too! And I'll be checking Gregor Samsa! :tup
-
The list is already invalid seeing how In a Flesh Aquarium isn't number #1. But I suppose I'll still follow :P
-

Ah well. That's a total bummer

True. :P

Other predictions
Opeth-Blackwater Park
I thought Still Life or MAYH was Sigzy's favorite? ???
-
Insurgents has to be on here.
-
I know Sigz really loves those, but I got the impression BWP was his favorite, though I could be wrong.
-
I will be very, very happy if Choirs of the Eye turns out to be number one. Very happy.
-
Will follow, and probably pick up much music based on this list. :tup
-
47. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West: While 'Bukowski' will always be my favorite Modest Mouse song, Lonesome Crowded West still holds it's spot as their best album. Like the title might imply, the album has a general rawness and anger to it that really none of their other albums have managed to capture as well.
46. Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element Pt. 1: An absolutely incredible experience from start to finish (okay the title track is kind of a meh closer but whatever). One of the main things I love in concept albums is how themes/melodies/etc get carried through the album, and TPE is probably the best example of doing that well. Things like the 'Ashes' reprise in 'Idioglossia' and the 'Morning on Earth' melody in 'Reconciliation' are great on their own, but in the context of the entire album their impact is immensely greater. Structure and concept albums aside, TPE is an album full of brilliant songs, and easily deserves a spot on this list. My only regret is that I can't put it higher.
-
I need to listen to more bands so I'll be following this and listening to albums as you post them. So far Green Carnation is awesome.
-
Awh not PoS. :'(
-
GTFO
-
Nonono.
I'm ok with you having cheesy music on the list too, because i'm certain there will be a lot of mindblowing stuff also. ;)
-
I'm going to skullfuck you.
And not in a romantic way, it will be bursting with hatred and violence.
-
:heart
-
The Perfect Element? Wait, this is #46, not number #6 :-\
-
Honestly I wouldn't call PoS cheesy music. Sigz, if I get the Perfect Element do you think my "meh" opinion of PoS will change for the better?
-
Maybe. I didn't really 'get' TPE until I heard Remedy Lane to be honest.
-
Honestly I wouldn't call PoS cheesy music. Sigz, if I get the Perfect Element do you think my "meh" opinion of PoS will change for the better?
I don't really think PoS is a "matter of where you start"-type of band, even though i'm just speaking from personal experience.
I tried pretty much all of the albums with the same outcome, even though it can be different for others, it feels like PoS is one of those bands you either love or hate. :P
-
I'm going to skullfuck you.
And not in a romantic way, it will be bursting with hatred and violence.
This quote is very sigzable. :neverusethis:
-
PoS took a long time to click for me...four years to be honest. Don't force it and keep trying.
-
45. Boris & Sunn O))) - Altar: Sunn O))) has always been a strange band for me. While I'm certainly a fan of drone metal, they were a band that I never truly got into. Sure, I enjoyed them from time to time but for the most part my focus was always on other artists in the genre. Their collaboration with Boris, however, is an absolutely brilliant album. Atmospheric, heavy, and haunting, it's an immense trip from start to finish. Between the frantic percussion in 'Etna' , the stark melancholy of 'The Sinking Belle', and the flat out terror of 'Blood Swamp', there's something in the album for most fans of dark and atmospheric music, even those who don't normally delve into drone metal.
44. Dream Theater - Images and Words: Dream Theater's 'classic' album, and there's a damned good reason for it. An album of tightly composed progressive metal where the technicality doesn't get in the way of good songwriting; what more could someone ask for? There is one dud in the form of 'Surrounded', but the rest of the album is so good that it carries the dead weight just fine. I should have to say much more though, you all know it well enough.
-
I came in here to see what the BWOOOOOOOOM was all about.
If that was your plan to attract people to the thread, it worked on me hook line and sinker. Good job.
-
OH FINE DONT COME IN HERE BECAUSE YOU'RE ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN MY EGO STROKING
And the BWWOOOOMMM was because it's Sunn O))). Duh.
-
I won't care about your ego stroking unless ICP's The Great Milenko is in the Top 10.
lololol, just kidding.
Kind of.
No but in all seriousness, I'm actually surprised a DT album other than SFAM made the list. I figured since you never listen to them anymore, SFAM would be the only one.
-

Sigz, I didn't know you actually liked DT. :lol

It's just a ruse so that Bosk doesn't ban him. :p
-
HEY I LOVE DREAM THEATRE THAT JAMES PORTNOY SURE IS A GOOD BASSIST AMIRITE
-
Images is one of my five favorite albums ever, but knowing you I can understand why its so low now compared to everything else. I would argue that Surrounded is not "dead weight."
-
IaW is an album with great songs but it is slightly unfulfilling as an album, maybe because of its shorter length. It's like having a really tasty free sample at a frozen yogurt store.
-
Images is a Top 10 album for me, but it's nice to see its appearance on your list nonetheless. And no, Surrounded is no dud.
-
Images and Words is just decent to me, DT has made at least 4-5 albums i like more.
-

It's short because it's well edited, something that band desperately needs to do. Aside from Awake, I've yet to see Dream Theater do anything worthwhile with that additional 15 minutes of music they've made on each album since.
-

Goddammit Zantera.
I would argue that Surrounded is not "dead weight."
If anything it's worse than dead weight; I actually skip it whenever I listen to I&W.

Agreed.
-
Surrounded is one of the best songs on Images And Words. The only song that I'd really consider weak is Pull Me Under.
-
I'm not saying there's anything majorly wrong with I&W though.
The only thing i feel, is that it's at best nr4, because Awake, 6DOIT and SFAM are better. :P
With that said, i'm not sure if a DT-album would make it to my top50 list, it kinda depends.

Wait...
Sigz listens to Dream Theater? But they have, like... a...
hit.
-
Dude, I listen to Paramore.
-
Good to see Altar on there, and I'm calling Continuum II to be very high on the list. Where it should be.
-
I've heard Sigz say a lot of positive things about Continuum, and i've been meaning to check it out for a long time, but it just seems impossible to find.
If you can't even find something in 'illegal' ways, then it's friggin underground. :hat
-
Zantera PM's:)
-
I was insanely lucky, I actually found a copy at my local record store. Of course, they also had a vinyl of Altar and a copy of Tarquin's Seaweed Farm, so they're pretty much just indie as fuck.
-
Awh, i wish i lived in USA or something.
Here it's pretty much impossible to find anything indie. :(
-
Last one for the day:
43. Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Insen: Maybe it's just because I'm kind of drunk, but I'm not completely sure what to say about Insen. It's not an album I talk about a lot, but that in itself probably speaks to just how understated this album is. Alva Noto is a brilliant noise artist, and here showcases his minimalist side with gentle washes of noise and sparkling glitches, all backing up Sakamoto's beautiful piano work. It's something that captured me the first time I heard it several years ago, and to this day remains a favorite. I've found it's even serves as a pretty good soundtrack to Starcraft 2. Then again compared to the SC2 soundtrack pretty much anything is better.

Yup.

I disagree. It's as long as it needs to be.
-
What the fuck Sigz? Surrounded is the greatest song ever.
-
Pretty much.
-
There is absolutely nothing appealing about Surrounded. The synth is almost as bad as Symphony X's synth on The Odyssey, the guitar lead and vocal melodies are insanely cringe worthy, and I pretty much want to kill myself once the song hits ~2:40.
-
Weirdo.

Yes.. symphony x is cheesy..
The Odyssey though... freaking epic track. EPIC. not complaining about keyboards on it
Edit: was that about I&W?
Keyboard sounds on I&W?
I don't have a problem with them.
-
I get what you mean with the cheesiness on I&W, Sigz.
It's one of the reasons i don't enjoy it as much, mainly because of the keyboard-tone in songs like Learning to Live and Surrounded, i've never seen myself as a 'classic prog'-fan, so that keyboard-tone just comes off as cheesy to me.

OMG NOSTALIGA MOMENT>
-
The synths on I&W are, like the triggered snare, a product of its time, which was just coming out of the biggest cheesefest in metal history. I don't think they detract from the music at all, as every second of that album is flawless.
-
I can understand people having I&W as their favorite though, it has solid songs.
The keyboards are the only off-putting thing to me, so it's no biggie. :P
Looking forward to more albums tomorrow. :tup
-
Zan, I agree with you that DT has made 4 or 5 albums better than Images and Words. You're not alone. ;)
-
I get what you mean with the cheesiness on I&W, Sigz.
It's one of the reasons i don't enjoy it as much, mainly because of the keyboard-tone in songs like Learning to Live and Surrounded, i've never seen myself as a 'classic prog'-fan, so that keyboard-tone just comes off as cheesy to me.
Although "Surrounded" is easily my least favorite track off of I&W, I think the synth is actually less cheesy (it actually really doesn't bother me at all) than some of the weird keyboarding that Rudess has used in more recent DT albums.
But that's just me.
-
I get that also, because i share that feeling a bit as well.
I&W has that tone all the album through, meanwhile i think 'modern'-DT (8VM>) has some parts that are extremely cheesy, but also parts that aren't.
If that makes any sense. :P
-
I really need to listen to I&W again... It's been ages since the last time! I remember it as an alright album, with some good songs. Probably one of DT's best.
-
Following with interest.
-
Images is one of my five favorite albums ever, but knowing you I can understand why its so low now compared to everything else. I would argue that Surrounded is not "dead weight."
I agree with this!
I&W is my fave DT album, and I think every song is amazing :) Its also in my top 5 albums.
-
I'm about to get a Ph.D. and I can't even fucking read.
-
My favorite DT album isn't in my top 5 albums.

Shit...misread his post.

every second of that album is flawless.
I dunno, 2:17 of Another Day kinda sucks.
EDIT: Oh and I'm really liking this thread so far. I like your taste in music Ian and there's a fair bit of overlap with mine, but you like some more obscure stuff than me, so hopefully I'll be introduced to some great music I didn't already know! I might do one of these at some point.
-
Good thread so far, keep it up iain :)

There is absolutely nothing appealing about Surrounded. The synth is almost as bad as Symphony X's synth on The Odyssey, the guitar lead and vocal melodies are insanely cringe worthy, and I pretty much want to kill myself once the song hits ~2:40.
I came to this post and the first thing I noticed was this. Whoa... I.... I don't even... I strongly disagree, but your list seems interesting, so I'll keep checking it.
-
I violently disagree with Sigz on Surrounded. Other than that, I'm enjoying the list so far.
-
I like Surrounded but I prefer it on Live at the Marquee because they use a piano sound instead of a synth one for the intro.
-
To be honest, I like the 80's-like synth intro better. I don't know why, I like it better, it sounds more "uplifting" I guess. Anyway, to teach his own.

I'm going to Amsterdam this weekend so there won't be any updates till Sunday night - I'll do a few more today to make up for it.
42. Mastodon - Leviathan: Lightning riffs, sludgy psychedelia, and whales; Leviathan pretty much has it all. While many point to Crack the Skye as being Mastodon's best work, Leviathan as a whole just feels so much better – more interesting riffs, a rawer production that works much better with Mastodon's sound, and just more memorable songs in general.
41. Opeth - Still Life: My first introduction to Opeth was Godhead's Lament, and it remains to this day my favorite song of theirs. While the rest of the album doesn't quite stand up to that particular song, it's an incredible album nonetheless. The songwriting is incredibly organic, and quite possibly their best work in that department, particularly with songs like The Moor, Godhead's Lament, and White Cluster. The album is brought down a bit by the overall production and atmosphere of the album; it's too chorusy, too reverby, and too clean. To be honest I have a hard time imagining the album with any other production, but I don't particularly care for it. Despite that it's incredible album with no bad songs, and only three that fall beneath 'god-tier' status.
40. Opeth - My Arms, your Hearse: Yep, another Opeth album. MAYH in many ways succeeded where Still Life failed. The vast majority of the album (Credence being the minority) is sheer brilliance, much like Still Life albeit in a different way. Whereas Still Life's strength lies in it's composition and songwriting, MAYH just beats you in the face with it's massive bear cock (read: insanely heavy riffs). It then soothes and heals with sweet nothings before dropping trou and repeating the process. The songs aren't quite as well structured as Still Life, but they're still brilliantly done and, perhaps more importantly, the actual riffs and melodies are just as good and better than those in Still Life. Along with that the production on MAYH is ridiculously dense and heavy, and it complements the songs far better then Still Life's production does.
-
Mastodon & Opeth. :metal
-
You are right about Godhead's Lament being their best song! :hat
-

I admit, I'm surprised to see those Opeth albums so low.
-
Mastodon & Opeth. :metal
-
Nice to see Opeth, and 2 fantastic albums that don't get nearly as much cred as they deserve. :)
Leviathan is also great, even though i prefer Blood Mountain slightly over it.
-
MAYH just beats you in the face with it's massive bear cock (read: insanely heavy riffs).
:rollin :rollin
Harry, you're a wizard.
-
Awww, no CtS on the list then? :( Oh well, love Leviathan too (especially "Megalodon." Definitely up there as one of my favorite heavy riffs ever. You know the one). I knew you liked MAYH, but I didn't expect it to beat Still Life if it showed up on this list at all. Definitely an album that gets overlooked far too often. Listening to it on vinyl is one of the best metal experiences ever.
-
Crack the Skye was a huge disappointment IMO, and if Mastodon keeps going into "that" direction, then i'll probably loose interest in them. :/
-
Leviathan has some great songs but as a whole it's a graveyard of boring riffs and songs.
-
Crack the Skye is my favorite by Mastodon... But I only have this one and Blood Mountain so I guess I'll check out Leviathan eventually.
-

39. Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs: At first glance shoegaze and black metal are not genres that would mix well together, but the french have repeatedly proved that wrong with bands such as Les Discrets, Alcest, and, most notably for me, Amesoeurs. Leaning more to the shoegaze rather than black metal side of things, Amesoeurs' first and last album is absolutely gorgeous. Rich textures, a great variance in the songwriting, and most obviously Audrey Sylvain's fantastic vocal work all combine to make an album that overshadows every other offering from the genre.
38. Barenaked Ladies - Gordon: The debut album from BNL remains my favorite even after listening to it for nearly half of my life (!). What's interesting to me about Gordon is that when I first got into the album I didn't understand much of the humor in the songs (it's difficult for an 11 year old in 2001 to get references about being a high school freshman in the 80s), but yet I still adored the album. In hindsight, that really just speaks to how strong the songwriting on the album is; just looking at the tracklisting there isn't a bad song on the album, and if I tried to cite the strong songs I'd end up listing half the album. To put it simply, Gordon is an album that manages to couple fantastic songwriting with a great sense of humor.
37. Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory: DT's best album. Great music, their best vocal melodies, and I love the musical reprises of Metropolis Pt. 1. I'm not sure what else there really is to say about it.

Hmm DT's best at only #37. Interesting. Points for it being SFAM though.

Cool to see Amesoeurs on the list, especially since that's one of the many many albums i downloaded last week, and it's in my "need to check out"-pile.
Awesome. :tup

Crack the Skye was a huge disappointment IMO, and if Mastodon keeps going into "that" direction, then i'll probably loose interest in them. :/
wat.
Glad to see some appreciation for BNL. They don't get talked about much. Cool to see Scenes on the list too, though I'd put it behind I&W and 6DoiT.
So given your trip to Amsterdam, can we expect to see Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head? :neverusethis:

This. The only Mastodon album I like, actually.
-
CTS is a good album, but there's too much material on it that's just totally forgettable.

Funny, CtS is the only one of their albums I find at all interesting. :lol

Same here, Rich. The improved vocals are what does it for me.

Yes this, I love Leviathan and BM but CTS has great vocals like in The Czar, I love that song. :hefdaddy

I'm going to Amsterdam this weekend so there won't be any updates till Sunday night - I'll do a few more today to make up for it.
I was there last weekend D:.
nooooooooooooo :sadpanda:
Enjoy your time there :tup. Netherlands isn't just about sex and drugs, although certain parts of Amsterdam definitely will give you that image :p.
-
CTS is a good album, but there's too much material on it that's just totally forgettable.
Fucking wat?
-
Yeah, CTS is pretty much the best.
-
I used to think CTS was Mastodon's best, but my opinion of Leviathan seems to grow every time I listen to it, more so than BM or CTS. I couldn't pick a favorite they're all great for me.
-
CTS>LEV>BM>meh
-
Following this list. Enjoy Amsterdam, even if you are missing Protest The Hero / Born of Osiris for it. Look out the Hotel Ben! And don't be fooled by the waffles, they're not as tasty as they look, especially for €5!
We're ranking Mastodon releases? I think I've done this before, but
Leviathon > Remission > Call Of Mastodon / Lifesblood / Slickleg EP > Blood Mountain > Crack The Skye
Crack the Skye really does nothing for me I'm afraid.
-
The cool thing about Remission is that you can nod off for 15-20 minutes and not miss a thing.
-
Orcus, there are times when your incessant negativity about almost everything annoys me.
But then you make a post like that that is so full of dry humor that I can't help but laugh. :lol

I try. Plus I only seem negative about everything because criticism sparks a lot more interesting discussions than just being agreeable, which most of the time makes a poster just another "yeah that's cool" in a string of similar comments. I do have and have posted lots of positive things about various topics but some people probably just don't catch it.
-
Yeah, CTS is pretty much the best.
Indeed, though Leviathan is also pretty awesome.

I agree.

Can't remember whether you're a Foos fan or not, but nevertheless I hope to see The Colour and the Shape pretty high.

Crack the Skye is awesome, everyone sucks
-
Leviathan, especially Hearts Alive, is killer.

36. The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium: The Mars Volta has covered a fair bit of ground since their debut, but nothing they've done since has been able to quite capture the magic that their initial brand of psychotic prog rock had. Cedric's vocals were at the top of their game, Omar's guitar work is technical and insane but never forced, and Jon Theodore's drum work is the best the band has seen (yes that includes Pridgen's). Virtually every song on the album stands out in some way, whether it's hard hitting intro of Son Et Lumiere/Inertiatic ESP, the gorgeous Eriatarka, or the one-two KO of Televators and Take the Veil as a closer. There are very few bad things I can really say about this album, which is to the strength of this album and the ones that follow it in this list.
35. Botch -We Are the Romans: The fact that Botch is a mathcore band whose members went on to form Russian Circles and Minus the Bear should give you some idea about what to expect from this album. Botch's technical hardcore sound was incredibly influential, and after listening to it it's not hard to see why. Much like Gojira, the riffs are absolutely infectious – it's near impossible not to headbang while listening to them. Just listen to the riff at 0:39 of “To Our Friends in the Great White North”. Then listen to the entire album. Many, many times.

Thanks, it was awesome! How was the gig?
CTS is a good album, but there's too much material on it that's just totally forgettable.
Fucking wat?
Yep. Good chunks of The Czar and The Last Baron, and pretty much all of Ghost of Karelia/Crack the Skye. I like them when I hear them, but I can't even think of how they go 5 minutes after hearing it.
-

It was mental dude, I can't hear anything out of my left ear. Born Of Osiris are exactly as tight live as you'd want them to be (you know there's 6 of them?) and Protest were awesome too, man can that guy play guitar.
-
:tup for De-Loused
-
34. Pain of Salvation - BE: And, perhaps surprisingly, Pain of Salvation takes another spot on the list. BE seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it ordeal, but I most certainly fall into the former camp. While it's certainly not an album that one could listen to regularly, in the right state of mind, with the right environment, it's one of the most incredible listening experiences you'll ever have. Driving up to Northern California and watching the low clouds roll over the hilltops and through the trees while listening to Pluvius Aestivus is easily one of the most magical musical experiences of my life.
33. Converge - Axe to Fall: The first four songs on Axe to Fall could along earn the album a place on this list – they're probably the best 9 minutes of metal I've ever heard. Add to that a slew of other fantastic songs and wrap it up with the intense closing duo of Cruel Bloom/Wretched World (see sig), and you have a brilliant album, and Converge's best effort to date. The only thing that keeps it from being higher is that the album does seem to sag in the middle, but that's more due to the inhuman perfection of the beginning and end.

AGGHHH I wish I could have gone so badly. Glad it was good though, we'll definitely have to catch a gig some time again (and hopefully that Rolo gig will get rescheduled >:(). Are you going to Devin Townsend in march?
-
I used to LOVE De-Loused so much in high school and then for whatever reason I just stopped being able to stomach it whatsoever. Which is a shame because I still think it's a really good album :lol
-
De-Loused is awesome! :tup
-
De-Loused is fucking awesome. And BE is BY FAR my favourite PoS album. :tup
-
I have three PoS albums but BE and TPE are not mine yet...
-
BE is probably the only PoS-album I haven't heard, overall I won't get into details about what i think about them again. ;D
Excited about the rest of the list.
-
Heh.
33 and 34 are two of the worst albums I've heard in the last year. :lol
Different strokes and all, just thought it was funny that those two fell right next to each other.
-
Love De-Loused. The only Volta album I listen to with any regularity, though the first three songs off of Frances the Mute might be the best first-three-song run ever.
-
BE is pretty darn awesome, and you're right, it is enhanced in just the right places and moods.
Converge...when I saw them live they really didn't do much for me.
-
When'd you see Converge?
OH RIGHT. You saw Dethklok. And Mastodon playing Crack the Skye.
I'm still sad I had to miss that concert.
-
I really wouldn't expect you to like Converge, but you'd probably like Wretched World: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YojThNUSpkw
-
AGGHHH I wish I could have gone so badly. Glad it was good though, we'll definitely have to catch a gig some time again (and hopefully that Rolo gig will get rescheduled >:(). Are you going to Devin Townsend in march?
Yeah I'm seeing Devin, now that's gonna be a GREAT gig. Rolo are touring Ireland in the next couple weeks, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to pop over to London after that...no news yet though. Cosmology would make my top 50 albums, not expecting to see it in your list though
-
Great to see the Pain of Salvation and Mars Volta albums in there! :D
-
BOTCH :hefdaddy
May be coincidental, but I listened to An Anthology Of Ends yesterday. FanTASTIC band, I don't see why we don't have anymore fans of them here.
We Are The Romans is so brutal, so good, banging riffs, energetic. Fuckin' A.
Oh and good to see Converge up there too. :tup
-
BE is probably the only PoS-album I haven't heard, overall I won't get into details about what i think about them again. ;D
Excited about the rest of the list.
I bet you'd love it, in some silly inverse logic.
-
BE could be about 30 spots higher, I think...
-
Bump. Want update!
-
WHERES OUR UPDATE YOU LAZY FUCK
-
Hmm I've always thought of doing this list, but thought it'd be a waste cause most of the albums on my list would be pretty unheard of. :lol
-

Which is a good thing. at least for me! I'm always checking new stuff! :tup I kind of want to do a list like that but it would be sooo hard to rank... Just my top 15 from 2010 was so long to do and I'm still not satisfied with it.
-

All the more reason to do it mate.

The fact that you like Marquee Moon makes me very happy.
-
Eh, I never really understood it until today. Great album. I wish I could find it on LP...

ZOMG UPDATE
32. Thrice- The Artist in the Ambulance: Probably the best post-hardcore album in existence, The Artist in the Ambulance is absolutely stunning. While the songs aren't quite as diverse as Thrice's later material, they're all brilliantly written, and serve to foreshadow what the band would be able to accomplish in the future.
31. Chroma Key - You Go Now: Atmospheric and subtle, You Go Now is a melancholic trip that you never want to end. Kevin Moore's minimal piano work is never at the forefront (except in Lunar), but is definitely a highlight for me, especially the break in When You Drive. His use of samples is always perfect as well, accenting and even making the song and never sounding out of place; tall order as I usually am not a fan of samples in music.
30. SikTh - The Trees Are All Dead & Dried Out: And now for something completely different. The Trees Are All Dead... is an absolute beast of an album. Well, maybe beast isn't the correct word, maybe like... mongoose? Anyways, it's psychotic and lightning-paced and will absolutely end your life in the best way possible. While the album's kinda dragged down by Tupelo and Can't We All Dream? The rest of the album is so good that it's doesn't matter.
-
Thrice :tup
-
Chroma Key :tup You Go Now is terrific.
But I prefer Graveyard Mountain Home. Which might be in my top 5, or top 10 best albums of all time. Kevin Moore's use of samples and his minimalist keyboard style just really hits me emotionally for some reason. Also, The Artist in The Ambulance might be my favourite Thrice album. But I say that to myself everytime I hear a respective Thrice album :lol
-

+1 for GMH
-
For me Tupelo is the only 'low' point on TTADADOWFSW, but it is a cover and not an original song. I still enjoy it though. You've got no excuse for not like Can't We All Dream? however, that track is fantastic! Yeah the intro and outtro are a bit long, but Mikee's vocals are absolutely majestic and the 7/8 groove works with the music and atmosphere perfectly. Glad to see the album on the list though, it is mind-blowing and would be top 10 for me
-
Thrice and SikTh are incredible!! :tup I still need to check out that Chroma Key album.
-
edit: ignore this. supposed to go in other thread.

I prefer Graveyard Mountain Home too! But hey, any Chroma Key to make it this high on an eclectic albums list is great anyway.

I'm with Sigz on this one, Ben. The one-two fail of Tupelo and Can't We All Dream bring it down a lot. Death of a Dead Day is the best them anyways :metal
-
I quite love Tupelo and Can't We All Dream?... I think it's just different from the rest, but it's still very good!
Also, UPDATE!!! :P
-
Yar, gief update.
-
Sorry, I've been really busy this week and not in a writing mood. I'll try to get one done tonight :-\
-
27. Kaki King -Dreaming of Revenge: The first Kaki King song I heard was “Playing with Pink Noise” on Later with Jools Holland. I then got her newest album (at the time), expecting more of that. Instead I got some of the most beautiful, dreamy, ethereal pop I've heard, all underlayed by fantastic guitar work that's interesting all on it's own. Kaki's soft, subdued vocals fit the music perfectly, and as a whole package it's near perfect. Mellow, bluesy guitar lines, soft ballads, and flashy acoustic guitar work – what's not to love?
28. Continuum - Continuum II : Continuum II is, without a doubt, the best piece of drone/noise I have ever heard. While I've always praised Construct IV for absolutely decimating your eardrums, special props have to go to Contruct VI for decimating your state of mind; the last half of the song is essentially the soundtrack to a Lovecraft story. Construct V has the problem of being in between two of the most incredible sonic experiences ever, but is still good. As a whole the album is one of the most intense listening experiences of my life, and I wish I could place it even higher than this.
29. Ellen Allien - Berlinette: Simply put, one of the best IDM albums ever (whatever the fuck IDM means). Ellen's vocals really add a lot to the album, but even instrumentally speaking it's near perfect, with a wonderful variety in sounds, interesting beats, and a distinct sense of melody.
-
1. Got the discography with Kaki King on my computer, haven't listened yet.
Now I got a good album recommendation for where to begin though, so sounds good. :tup
2. I was hunting down Continuum-stuff or almost a year, before I realized that I actually had it, though it was labeled as "Bass Communion - Continuum" for some reason.
Haven't had time to listen to it yet, but I will. :hat
3. Heard a lot of good stuff about Ellen Allien, sadly I haven't heard any of the music.
Will check it out though. :tup
-
Make sure it's Continuum II, not I; I is nowhere near the level of II.
-
I have both, but I'll make sure of it. :tup
-
K.King :tup
-
So this makes three bands I know of called Continuum...
-
I agree Sigz, I is relatively uninteresting compared to II. II is just one of the best things ever.
-
Kaki :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart
-
Alright, I'm finally done with work for a bit, so I can finish this bitch up with a more consistent schedule I think.
26. Tool - Lateralus: I'm not really sure what to say about this album to be honest. It's really, really, really fucking good. And Adam Jones is a very underrated guitarist. That is all.
25. Steven Wilson - Insurgentes: For a long time leading I wanted to hear something from Steven Wilson that combined a lot of the different areas of music he creates in, and that's exactly what this album delivered, and then some. What consistently impresses me about Insurgentes is just how concise it feels. There's a brilliant range of music on display, but it never feels disjointed or scatterbrained. SW often talks about making an album that actually feels like a album and not just a collection of songs, and his own solo album is probably one of the best examples of that around.
24. Ulver - Perdition City: Pretty much the best album to listen to while walking down an empty city street at night and smoking a cigarette, Ulver's fifth release is their strongest to date (though Blood Inside comes damn close). Combining elements of electronic music, trip hop, ambient, and jazz with a healthy dose of film noir stylings, Perdition City is dark and hard boiled, yet oh so smooth. It does feel like it could use a little editing, primarily because the sound is so focused and refined that it's a pretty intense listen. Despite that, it's a release that any fan of atmospheric and textural music should have.
-
The Ulver and Tool albums are both amazing! I haven't actually heard the SW though, shockingly enough.
-
WAT
-
I know, it's shameful. :sadpanda:
-
Change that, Rich!
-
All great albums, though Insurgentes and Perdition City are shockingly low.
-
3 great albums indeed. Though Blood Inside would be in my top 5 probably.
-
Insurgentes would be in my top 20 I guess. I have a feeling it'll stay special for a longer time than most PT releases. While I think PT is a lot more accessible and a lot more fun to listen to on a daily basis. Wouldn't want to hear 'Insurgentes' every day, it's way too spaced out and powerful for that.
-
Insurgentes is one of those albums I listen to on a whim for some odd reason and I forget how amazing it is until it finishes. Then I gush about it for a while and then forget again. Its kind of shameful. I feel like its still growing on me after all those years, though.
-
Listening to it for the first time while going through the book that came with the limited edition was magical.
-
I feel like I'm bound to enjoy that record someday; I just don't know when that day will come
-
Pretty sweet list so far. Looking forward to the rest.
I expect a NIN album or two to be on here ;) If not, I will cry like a woman.
-
Update?
Oh and Insurgentes is no good. Sorry, big old PT fan here, very big Bass Communion fan, really a fanboy of no-man, but Insurgentes does nothing for me.
-

Take the semen out of your ears.
-
How do you know? :-[
-
Man I fail at updating this.
23. Massive Attack – Mezzanine: Pretty much the best trip hop album ever, as I've said before. It's dark, diverse, and groovy as fuck. While the last half of the album (from Dissolved Girl on) is absolute perfection, the entire album is brilliant, and flows so well that the stronger songs carry the weaker songs really well.
22. Giant Squid - The Ichthyologist: There really aren't enough good things I can say about The Ichthyologist, or Giant Squid in general for that matter. It's heavy, driving, and catchy. It has wonderfully morbid lyrics, great guest spots, and a great range of styles that all fall into a really tight and well-formed sound. Simply put, The Ichthyologist is easily one of the best metal albums ever.
-
Woot for Mezzanine!
-
I have that Giant Squid album. Its pretty awesome.
-
I have both on my computer, haven't heard any of them yet though. :-\
-
ಠ_ಠ
-
Mezzanine is awesome. Maybe not the best trip hop album every in my opinion, but awesome.
-
Two great albums. I need to listen to Giant Squid more.
-
Woot for Mezzanine!
This! And I have to cehck out Giant Squid now!
-
*waiting for Björk*

*waiting for Björk*
They're going to be the last 6 albums, duh.
-
21. Thrice - Vheissu: For a long time Vheissu was the odd man out in Thrice's discography for me. While I knew it had really great songs, I found myself not really spinning it all that often. Then one day it just clicked, and blew past virtually everything else I had heard from them at that point. In the context of the rest of their work, it represents a really interesting point in their development. Moving away from the post-hardcore style that had been growing in their last three albums, they distilled out the punk stylings of their previous hardcore sound; Dustin's voice matured considerably, his screams carrying significantly more power than before and gaining a much more unique quality. They incorporated more electronic elements, from electric pianos to digital drum beats, offering a more mellow side to their music that hadn't been heard before. All of this was tied together by a more mature and experimental songwriting style, and the result is a near perfect album, despite being a liitle more inaccessible than their other work. The only thing that really holds the album back is that it doesn't seem to flow quite right. I can't say how I'd rearrange it to make it better, but I've always been a bit uncomfortable with the current arrangement.
20. Ulver - Blood Inside: Easily one of the densest albums I've ever heard, Blood Inside is an album that sucks you in and won't let go until you've heard everything it has to offer; in short, you'll never stop listening to it and you'll never stop discovering new things about it. Even after an uncountable number of listens I still feel like I've only begun to scratch the surface of it, and that's something I don't think I've ever been able to say about another album. It's dark, diverse, and pure brilliance. And that's about all I have to say about that.
-
:heart Vheissu
-
Two fantastic albums right there. :tup
-
Two fantastic albums right there. :tup

Hell ya to Vheissu! "The Earth Will Shake" is probably my fave off that album, but every song is :metal!!

LOOK TO THE DAY THE EARTH WILL SHAKE
THESE WEATHERED WALLS WILL FALL AWAY
-
LOOK TO THE DAY THE EARTH WILL SHAKE
THESE WEATHERED WALLS WILL FALL AWAY
Multiplied by infinity
-
Since everyone is only talking about Vheissu,
Blood Inside! Fuck yeah, one of my favorite albums ever!
-
Two fantastic albums. Vheissu is incredible from start to finish and Blood Inside would be un my top 5, easily.
-
Vheissu would be right up there for me too. I've never had any issue with the flow of the album, i'm interested to know which songs you would move around.

Stop slacking Sigz!
-
Now you listen here Sigz, I paid good money for this list and I want it finished. You'd better get off your lazy ass and finish this list.
-
Now you listen here Sigz, I paid good money for this list and I want it finished. You'd better get off your lazy ass and finish this list.
I'm thinking of demanding my money back.
-
GODDAMMIT PEOPLE I'LL GET TO IT CALM DOWN IVE BEEN BUSIER THAN A HOOKER ON FREE HOOKER DAY FUCK
-
I thought you were already a hooker, and for you, every day was Free Hooker Day. You've never made me pay before.
-
Sigz, you can only make up for this by having Systematic Chaos as your nr1 album.
-
Alright, I wish I didn't have to do this, but I'm just gonna finish this off as quickly as possible with tiny write ups. I have so much work to do that it's passed the point of being anxiety-inducing and just become funny, and that's really not a good thing.
19. Fennesz - Endless Summer: Great poppy melodies layered behind gorgeous, noise-laden electronic awesomeness with subtle guitar sprinkled throughout. Pure brilliance.
18. Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine: Panasonic Youth, Sunshine the Werewolf, and Unretrofied, together on one album. Listen to it and die happy.
17. Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream: Basically every song is fantastic, and there's a wonderful array of emotions across the album. Also, the harmonies are gorgeous.
16. Between the Buried and Me - Colors: Sixty four minutes of kickassery. Some of it could have used some editing (White Walls I'm looking at you), but it still flows so well as an album that it doesn't matter.
15. Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me: I feel like I don't talk about this album enough. Simply put, it's brilliant. Nothing fancy, just near perfect songwriting, a great flow throughout the album, and not a single weak song.
-
Colors :heart
-
Last week I listened to that Brand New album for the first time, should have done it much sooner.
-
Nice to see some love for Stupid Dream :tup
-
Hell yes Colors :metal
-
Man I've tried listening to Colors a lot and I just can't get into it. :-\

Goddammit Matt first Blindfolds Aside and now this? You're a constant disappointment to everyone you know and love and you will die alone.

seriously, man. get a hold of yourself.
-
Colors is one of the best albums ever made, period.
-
It's okay.
-
Certainly one of the best metal albums in the last decade. Though it's probably hard to digest fully on the first listen.
-
Goddammit Matt first Blindfolds Aside and now this? You're a constant disappointment to everyone you know and love and you will die alone.
But...but...but...you're tied for first in my roulette! Doesn't that give me some points? :(

But...but...but...you're tied for first in my roulette! Doesn't that give me some points? :(
OK, you won't die alone, there will be a bedbug with you in your deathbed.
-
14. Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights: Without a doubt the darkest, angriest album I have ever heard. Just listen.\
13. Devin Townsend Project - Addicted: ...and right after that, one of the happiest, bestest albums I have ever heard. WE ARE ONE AND WE HAVE FUN
12. Dillinger Escape Plan - Irony is a Dead Scene: Dillinger Escape Plan. Mike Patton. What's not to love? The first two minutes or so of When Good Dogs Do Bad Things is one of the greatest things I have ever heard.
11. Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient: Brilliant songs, amazing sense of humor. It's one of those albums, much like Addicted, that I can always on and enjoy.
ZOMG TOP TEN NEXT WHO WANTS TO MAKE PREDICTIONS
-
I'm glad to see Ziltoid so high in your list.
-
Don't actually know or have any of those albums, but I believe my dad has Addicted in his collection.
Should listen to it. :P

I know for sure we will be seeing:
Eisley - Room Noises
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Opeth - Blackwater Park is also very likely.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was even more PT than that actually.
-
Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye
That's probably #1.
-
I think Porcupine Tree's Deadwing will be number one. I think I remember Sigz calling it the greatest album ever or something.
-
Yeah. He's said the same thing about Choirs too. :lol
-
I've probably called at all of the albums in my top ten the greatest album ever at some point or another :lol
-
Kayo Dot-Choirs of the Eye
Thrice-The Alchemy Index (my choice for his number 1)
Porcupine Tree-Deadwing
Porcupine Tree-In Absentia
Opeth-Blackwater Park
Eisley-Room Noises
Maybe something by Aphex Twin? Bath or Leaving Your Body Map by Maudlin of the Well haven't made an appearance either, and I'm pretty sure Sigz loves the crap out of those albums.
-
Yeah I think we're gonna see a lot of Toby Driver in the top 10. :p
-
Agalloch, maybe? :hat
-
Agalloch, maybe? :hat
There better be some.
-
We'll definitely see Gregor Samsa - 55:12 and Agalloch - The Mantle
-
Loveless better be on there, Sigz.

Loveless better be on there, Sigz.
Yes.

I've never seen a compilation of such horrible bands/albums in my whole entire life

Z, that post could have been written by Sonata. Seriously, that's so him. Is he channeling his spirit through you?

OMG there is such a HUGE failure at number 44. :omg: There are so many things wrong with it, it's making me want to suicide hard.
-
It's Sigz. You should consider yourself lucky DT made the list at all, nevermind its low ranking.
-
OMG there is such a HUGE failure at number 44. :omg: There are so many things wrong with it, it's making me want to suicide hard.
The fact that it even made it to the list? :P
Personally it wouldn't make it to my top500 albums, when it comes to DT they have at least 4 or 5 better albums.
-
-
He's right though. SFAM, Six Degrees, and Octavarium are all better than I&W.
-
To be honest, DT are the most I've ever gone off a band after being obsessed with them. All I'll listen to from them now is I&W, the first disc of SDOIT, SFAM and the title track of Octavarium. Of those, I'd rank I&W easily the highest, and even parts of that put me off nowadays. Fair enough Sigz, I say.
-
Obviously i'm being silly because opinions are well.. opinions. But that just blew my mind!
-
He's right though. SFAM, Six Degrees, and Octavarium are all better than I&W.
Bitch please.

TIME FOR AN UPDATE
-
Very well.
10. Circle Takes the Square - As the Roots Undo: These guys have gotten a lot of hate from most of the DTFers I've shown them to, mainly for the vocals and the bizarre (and unfortunate) prejudice that exists against hardcore/screamo in general. That said, As the Roots Undo is easily one of the greatest albums ever, and I wish I could put it higher. Psychotic guitar runs, brilliant drumming, hectic back-and-forth male/female vocal lines, fantastic songwriting with wonderfully organic song structures, gorgeous lyrics... the list of reasons for why this album is amazing goes on. It's really a must listen for any fan of experimental and heavy music.
9. Agalloch - The Mantle: I honestly am at a loss for words about this album. It's atmospheric, heavy at times, soft at others, but always a bleak and beautiful journey.
-
I've heard quite a lot about ATRU, and it's been about 50-50 claiming it to be the best thing ever, and then the worst thing ever. I really must check it out sometime. As for The Mantle, quite simply, just yes.
-
I thought The Mantle would make the Top 5, but I'm pleased to see it in the Top 10 regardless.
-
Have we had AAtG yet? They could make a second appearance, although there are eight other albums I'd be expecting more.
-

I'm curious as to what albums...
-
Still expecting...
Thrice - The alchemy index
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Kayo Dot - Choirs of the eye
Eisley - Room Noises
Maudlin of the well - Part the second
-
Blackfield?
-
I can't remember what his favorite Opeth album is but I think he's a big enough fan that #40 is pretty low. I'd be willing to bet that Blackwater Park is in there somewhere.

These, maybe a second PT album and BWP, and I'd replace Part The Second with Bath. So actually only seven, hmm...

I'm pretty sure we'll see Blackwater Park now.
-
Great to see some love for The Mantle :heart Looking forward to the rest.
On the topic of Dream Theater, I can't remember the last time I've even listened to them. :-\ They're a good band, but they haven't aged well for me, I guess.
-
Have we had AAtG yet? They could make a second appearance, although there are eight other albums I'd be expecting more.
Not likely, because The Mantle is their best album, and I think Sigz thinks so too.
-

Who are you?
-
Ghost of Perdition > Blackwater Park.
So both of them had better be in there.
Also expecting Deadwing, a different PT album, a Blackfield album, and a Thrice album.
-
Ghost of Perdition > Blackwater Park.
So both of them had better be in there.

Ghost of Perdition is better than the whole album, huh?
-
I always call it that for some reason. :lol I've done that about twenty times on DTF.
Anyway, Ghost Reveries had better be on there.
-
I always call it that for some reason. :lol I've done that about twenty times on DTF.
Anyway, Ghost Reveries had better be on there.
I think you'll be disappointed.
-
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Blackwater Park is Sigz's favorite.
-
:yeahright
Well I'm sure that Ghost Reveries had better be on there.
-
:yeahright
Well I'm sure that Ghost Reveries had better be on there.
Prolly not.
I think MAYH is his second favorite Opeth album.
-
According to the list, it is. And that's why Sigz is awesome.
-
I'm not expecting Blackfield, to be honest.
-
Isis?
-
Ghost of Perdition > Blackwater Park.
So both of them had better be in there.
Also expecting Deadwing, a different PT album, a Blackfield album, and a Thrice album.
Ghost of Perdition is better than the whole album, huh?
Ghost Reveries is my favorite album ever, and I make that mistake sometimes. It's so easy to call it that if you're not thinking about it. :p
-
Don't think we'll see Blackfield, mostly because I never think I've seen Sigz praise any of the two albums.
Personally I think they're both better then the majority of PT-albums though. :P
-
Alright, because I'm procrastinating harder than Ron Jeremy right now:
8. Opeth - Blackwater Park: Opeth's best album easily. Every song is top notch, it flows brilliantly, and has an atmosphere that's only GR and MAYH have come close to matching. Special props to all the background acoustic work, the album wouldn't be the same without it.
7. maudlin of the Well - Bath: The first time I heard this album, I had no idea what kind of band maudlin was when I put it on, and I literally shit my pants at the transition from 'Blue Ghost' to 'They Aren't All Beautiful'. I then proceeded to cum for the rest of the album. You will too.
-
Bath is fucking legendary.
-
I'm not sure I want to listen to an album that will cause my pants to be filled with shit in the back and cum in the front by the end of it. You're not really selling that album well. :p Or is it all worth it?
-
Wait, you mean there are people who don't like shitting their pants? Weird...
-
Yeah, the world is full of weird people.
And BWP :heart :heart It was my first metal album, actually, and it still holds a special place in my heart.
-
Both albums are fucking legendary.
-
Well I was right about Bath, BWP, and other people were right about Agalloch. Circle Takes the Square is a big surprise though.
-
Got Bath on my computer, haven't checked it out yet.
Cool to see some love for Opeth, though I personally don't enjoy BWP as much as others seems to do.
Still awaiting the top spots. :hat
-
The acoustic layering is what makes BWP sound so damn special, IMO.
-
Bump because I don't want to miss this thread while I'm partying this Friday, Friday, I'm gonna get down on Friday!
-
:bump:
-
Oh right I was supposed to finish this right?
WELL IM ON EASTER BREAK NOW BITCHES SO BRACE YOURSELF FOR SOME HOT TOP ALBUM ACTION

6. Isis - In the Absence of Truth: If there's one word I would use to describe this album, it would be 'magical'; While Isis's entire catalog is great, somehow the planets were aligned and gods were smiling when this album was written, yielding an absolutely wonderous album. Gorgeous layers of clean guitar become melancholic sludge riffs while the vocals wander amongst them, all combining to create one of the most beautiful and ethereal metal albums I've ever heard.
-
Sadly I only know Wavering Radiant by Isis, but I think it's great. :P
Should check that one out.
-
GET IT NOW
-
I was right! :millahhhh Good choice. It's the only Isis album I own, but it's pretty sweet.
-
I've heard them compared to Rosetta. Is this a fair comparison? If so, I'll definitely check them out.
-
ehhhh it's not completely off-base, but it's not really a good comparison. Some of their other stuff is closer in sound, but ITAOT really isn't.
Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lze7jQfqqI
-
That didn't blow me away, but was cool enough that I'll at least give the album a fill listen. :tup
-
Don't worry, it didn't really click with me for a while.
-
Great album, definitely the best of what I've heard from Isis! :tup
-
Oh no, I'm only on #34! I'm not going to catch up in time. :(
You have a very good sense of musical appreciation, Sigz. :tup
-
oh boy haha wow you must really like whatever björk album is coming up on the list haha

5. Gregor Samsa - 55:12:
As the band themselves say about their music, “it's slow and sad, slow and happy, but never fast and anything” - It's a pretty apt description overall. Happy or sad, 55:12 is a slow, thoughtful, and beautiful album – thoughtful especially. Every song is composed and arranged perfectly, every second of music serving a purpose - the result is something that is exceptionally listenable. Whereas other albums in the genre require a specific mindset or mood going in, 55:12 is an album that you can listen to pretty much any time, and it benefits greatly from it. To put it concisely, 55:12 is a stunningly beautiful album that every music fan should have.
-
From your recommendation Sigz, I listened to this album earlier this week and has since played it 3-4 times, and I have to agree with you on all points.
It's not quite Post-Rock and it's not quite Shoegaze or any other specific genre, it's a mix of everything good in music, and a fantastic album. :heart
-
Yep this album is fantastic. Nearly always get an emotional response out of me...especially a sort of 'Wow, I can see things clearly now' type effect ;D . And despite Sigz' best pimpin' not many people seem to have this album yet  Get it people! Even if you have just a remote interest in post-rock.
-
I gotta listen again. I remember not being too crazy about the vocals.
-
Sigz, Massive Attack was really really good. Crap. It was so good.
-
Massive Attack is incredible. Which album?
-
UPDATE PLZ
YOU'RE ON BREAK SO NO EXCUSES YOU LAZY FUCK
-
4. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing:
Probably the best example of just how much flow can contribute to an album. In Deadwing's case, not every song is perfect - Lazarus is kinda boring, Arriving Somewhere dies halfway through the song, and Glass Arm Shattering isn't all that interesting on it's own. However, in the context of the album, all of these songs are great. I can't imagine a better closer than Glass Arm Shattering, and Lazarus is a perfect break between the heavier Shallow and Halo.
Thus what you get at the end is an album of great songs. Maybe not so great on their own, but together they add up to a truly fantastic album.
-
It's a good album, but personally I think it is way too high here. I'd put a few other albums from Porcupine Tree in a much higher ranking than this one.
-
It's a good album, but personally I think it is way too high here. I'd put a few other albums from Porcupine Tree in a much higher ranking than this one.
Pretty much this.
Deadwing is a classic, but personally I prefer Signify, Fear of a Blank Planet and Up the Downstair at least. :P
Not surprised to see it though.
-
Both of you GTFO now.
-
I'm surprised it's only at #4
-
Deadwing is PT's best album, great choice!
-
Sigz, Massive Attack was really really good. Crap. It was so good.
 I'm quite impressed you're actually going through the entire list! :metal
-
Great album, although I disagree: Lazarus is a great song even on it's own.
-
Lazarus is my favorite song on the album and it's not boring in the slightest.
Halo is the one that really brings the album down. And Arriving Somewhere can drag too.
-
Halo is the one that really brings the album down.
Goddammit Seth.
-
Halo and Shallow being so close to each other in the first half of the album is what drags it down somewhat for me. Never felt anything for either song. But Lazarus is excellent, the production on that track exemplifies what's so good about Deadwing; from literally the first second, it just sounds so warm.
-
The only part that drags so much that it becomes annoying is the second half of Arriving Somewhere.
Geez, talk about a song that's long for the sake of being long.
-
There might be some bad parts to this album, but The Start of Something Beautiful is godly :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
Lazarus is awesome and I wouldn't have put Deadwing that high but okay.
-
Sigz, Massive Attack was really really good. Crap. It was so good.
 I'm quite impressed you're actually going through the entire list! :metal
I think this will be my next musical discovery project as well, now that I've pretty much finished with the bands and artists in my song roulette. :D
-
Lazarus and Arriving Somewhere are both awesome.
It's odd that I apparently like the songs more but would rank this album like ten spots lower :lol
-
Lazarus and Arriving Somewhere are amazing on their own and in context of the album. Of course, I'd put Lightbulb Sun over Deadwing, but I know DW's your favorite so I understand...
...that you are WRONG!
-
The Sigz is a lightbulb.
And WTF, Lazarus ain't boring.
-
Deadwing would be my second favorite album of all time, so.... veddy niceeee :metal
-
Yay for Deadwing!
-
Deadwing is easily the best PT album.
-
No mention of "The Start Of Something Beautiful"?
-
No mention of "The Start Of Something Beautiful"?
This ^
Amazing song, one of my all-time PT faves
-
No mention of "The Start Of Something Beautiful"?
The only songs I actually mentioned were the weaker ones IMO :lol TSOSB is probably my second favorite PT song of all time however, so it definitely deserves some mention.
-
I completely agree with what you said about the album as a whole making the worse songs bearable Sigz; that's also the exact opposite of how I feel about In Absentia, it's got awesome songs with no flow basically.
-
Halo is the one that really brings the album down.
I think it's that, Open Car, and Shallow.
-
*sweating*
hoo boy wow this byoark album sure is something huh heheh must be to be ranked so high
-
Sigz, Massive Attack was really really good. Crap. It was so good.
 I'm quite impressed you're actually going through the entire list! :metal
:hat
-
Halo is the one that really brings the album down.
I think it's that, Open Car, and Shallow.
Wtf is wrong with you people?
-
The only part that drags so much that it becomes annoying is the second half of Arriving Somewhere.
Geez, talk about a song that's long for the sake of being long.
That would be Anesthetize. ;)
Every song on DW is varying degrees of fantastic. I could listen to that album forever.
-
And Anesthetize is easily the best PT song.
-
And Anesthetize is easily the best PT song.
um no
-
Find me another PT song that covers that amount of ground, and manages to be interesting the entire time.
Also, that bridge in the second section where all hell breaks lose = the best thing ever.
-
The middle is awesome, I agree, but the beginning and end are eh.
How about the extended version of Even Less? Or possibly Russia on Ice?
-
Ooh, Russia on Ice is a pretty good contender. I still prefer Anesthetize though. The vocal layering on the third section is nothing short of orgasmic. Also, the static section bridging part 1 to part 2 is amazing.
-
Buying.
New.
Soul.
-
You're all wrong. Deadwing is the worst song on Deadwing.
The rest of the album is pretty damn great.

-J
wat.
EDIT: Oh God I just saw that this was Sigz's top fifty albums and NOT the PT thread like I thought it was based on this last page. :lol
-
Well, this is the PT thread until Sigz posts another album.
-
Guys. Stars Die.
-
Guys. Stars Die.
This. Fucking this all up in this bitch.
-
Dark Matter > all.
-
And Anesthetize is easily the best PT song.
Gotta agree with this on all counts, and all the description which came after. While the middle section is the best, this song works so well as a whole and goes to so many interesting and fantastic places.
Also live = orgasm.
-
Buying.
New.
Soul.
-
Dark Matter > all.
EWWWWWWWWWWW NO
-
Dark Matter > all.
That.
-
Trains, Heartattack and BNS are my top 3.
-
ASBNH is clearly their best song ever, so yeah.
-
ASBNH is clearly their best song ever, so yeah.
If it would've been ~6-7 minutes shorter, maybe.
Sadly the end result is one of the best examples of a song dragging waaaaaaay too long.
-

Sadly the end result is one of the best examples of a song dragging waaaaaaay too long.
I swear we've had this EXACT same conversation several dozen times in this thread by now.
-
And it's not even the goddamn PT thread
-
Sigz is the only one who can stop this.
-
SIGZ POST A NEW ALBUM SO THIS CAN TURN INTO THE NEW THRICE THREAD OR THE NEW EISLEY THREAD OR SOMETHING.
-
Anyway, I'm fairly certain that we are going to see these as the top 3 albums in some ranking..
3. Eisley - Room Noises
2. Kayo Dot - Choirs of the eye
1. Thrice - The Alchemy Index
Maybe like that?
bleh
-
That looks completely plausible.
-
Just finished up Brand New - TDAGARIM (which is probably the first time I've really enjoyed an alternative rock group). My goal is to catch up before Sigz completes his list. :hat
-
Has Paramore been on the list yet? Maybeh?
-
Has Paramore been on the list yet? Maybeh?
Good god, I hope not. Besides, it would most likely leave Choirs of the Eye as the odd album out, anyway, and I really want to see that one on here.
-
3. Vanden Plas - Christ 0
2. Redemption - Snowfall on Judgment Day
1. Shadow Gallery - Room V
-
3. Vanden Plas - Christ 0

Yeah there's no way.

lol, totally thought this was the PT thread when I posted that.
Anyway, yeah, that horse has been beaten far beyond death.
-
3. Eisley - Room Noises
(https://www.myplaylistisbetterthanyours.com/albums/eisley_roomnoises.jpg)
I've said it before, but this is virtually a perfect rock/pop album. Almost every song is fantastic and moreover distinct, from the dark and whimsical Marvelous Things to the country-ish Golly Sandra. There isn't much else to say about it, it's a wonderful album from start to finish.
-
:tup
-
Ian

I got my copy of Room Noises signed by the band. :D Love it as well, though the Valley just might be able to top it. I love the heck out of both of them though.

Choirs of the Eye for #1 of course.

Fucking ew
Only a number 1 spot for Choirs of the Eye could make up for this.
-
Great to see Eisley up there, and not really surprising. :tup
Room Noises is fantastic, but personally I think I prefer The Valley, to me it has more mature songwriting and slightly better songs, have not heard Combinations yet so can't say anything about that one.
-
Fucking ew
I'm going to shit on your face tonight.
-
May I help you, Ian?
-
I'll join in on the face-shitting.

Never listened to Eisley before.

Ok, maybe they are nice to look at. But still..
-
I really don't get the love for Eisley. Solid and inoffensive band, but nothing more imo.
They're the most beautiful thing ever.
No way.
Name one thing more beautiful.
Damien Rice, Thomas Dybdahl, Tallest Man On Earth, Susanne Sundfor, Debussy, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens...
Just Garron and Weston are more beautiful than all of those combined. It's not even a fair fight if you throw in the sisters.
:splodetard:
-
I'd never seen that smiley before, so I thought I was going crazy when it did its thing. :lol
But seriously, I think Eisley are probably the most overrated band on this board.
-
But seriously, I think Mew are probably the most overrated band on this board.
Yeah.
-
Oh, Mew are another band that are more beautiful than Eisley.
-
To both of you:

Yeah.
I swear to God you hate everything beautiful in this world.
I will agree that Mew > Eisley, though.
-
I used to love you, Matt.
Not anymore...
-
Glaurung, send me your favorite Eisley song.
Maybe I haven't listened to the right ones.
-
I listened to all of Room Noises, and it didn't really do THAT much for me at all.
-
favorite Eisley song.

He asked for one song! I could have just posted links to all of Room Noises.
-
No you couldn't have done, he asked for ones that would make him think they were good.
Oh no he di'nt.

I agree with all of this. I love Eisley though. But definitely not top ten material
-
I couldn't make it all the way through to that Eisley album. :(

Tallest Man on Earth, Radiohead, and Thomas Dybdahl better than Eisley?

..I've never heard Eisley. :'(

You need to change that right now. Click. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xewk7OgIrPU)
-
Ok. I listened to that song. I needa check out Eiesley. ONly three albums anyway, right?
-
Yes. Room Noises, The Valley, then Combinations. In order of when you should listen to them, not chronological.
-
No. I'm going to listen chronologically. I always do.
-
Oh well, that's fine. It won't make much of a difference.
-
Ok. I listened to that song. I needa check out Eiesley.
Yeah, this. They had better be as amazing as that song led me to believe.
-
No. I'm going to listen chronologically. I always do.
That's usually a horrible idea, I've found, but I guess it works for Eisley. :lol
-
Why is that a horrible idea.
I must first find something I like about a band, then I can commit myself to listening through their discography. Because I know that if those first albums suck, there's something better ahead.
-
I don't know, it strikes me as an odd/silly way to get into a band. I mean, if it works for you, go for it.
-
Tallest Man on Earth, Radiohead, and Thomas Dybdahl better than Eisley?
:rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
I know music is subjective blah blah blah, but I genuinely can't understand how this is an untrue statement in any way whatsoever.
-
Well, TD and TMOE are both pretty much just dime a dozen singer-songwriters, nothing terribly interesting. And I will never for the life of me understand why Radiohead gets the praise that they do. I mean, they have some good songs but overall they're really not that interesting.
-
Hard to compare the artists listed, because I love both Radiohead and The Tallest Man on Earth, and I'm just getting into Thomas Dybdahl.
But Eisley's music really isn't like any of those, it's like comparing Cannibal Corpse to Justin Bieber. :lol
-
But Eisley's music really isn't like any of those, it's like comparing Cannibal Corpse to Justin Bieber. :lol
Justin Bieber, easily.
-
Wow, this Eisley album is freaking gold! Marvelous Things is my favourite by far. It sounds like a non-remedial Taylor Swift.
-
WHen I tried to show someone Eisley he said they sounded like Coldplay. :lol
-
I hope you ceased all contact with this someone.
-
I listened to the album. Pretty much the best pop/rock I've ever heard. I have to listen again to form a judgement on how to rate it. Very pleasant stuff, but not really mindblowing per se.
-
Hmm. As I said, I might just have to make a Top 50 Albums, but so many will be unheard of. :lol
-
I've considered making one, too, but I'm gonna wait awhile to let all of my new discoveries sink in.
Also, update plz.
-
Hmm. As I said, I might just have to make a Top 50 Albums, but so many will be unheard of. :lol
That's a good thing.

This.
The biggest reason why I check out listing threads is to get new ideas for stuff to check out.
-
Hmm alright. I might make one when I find the time to make a list.
-
UPDATE BITCH
-
Hmm. As I said, I might just have to make a Top 50 Albums, but so many will be unheard of. :lol
I will definitely follow. And use the list to dig further into prog. My knowledge of prog is fairly limited, there are a bunch of prog bands I wanna get into but haven't done yet... so please make a list :).
ALSO SIGZ UPDATE
-
Hmm alright. I might make one when I find the time to make a list.
I might do one after Sigz unless anyone else really wants to go next.
-

Just got The Devil and God....

It is :D

D&G is SO GOOD.

Apparently D&G was recorded (in part) at the recording studio down the road from me.

I'd like to hop on the list once everyone else is done. I'm mostly just interested in seeing if I can actually organize my music preferences in this manner, I've never been able to really do it before.

Exactly this for me also.
(also HI SETH! WOO)
EDIT: Actually, scratch that, I'd like to do a top 20 of 2010.
-
I too would like to do a top 50. I think i will surprise myself with how many albums are not metal
-
*waits patiently for Choirs of the Eye to come next*
-
I actually just made a potential "top 50" list. I think it's a pretty decent shot for a spur-of-the-moment kinda thing.
-
I tried making a top 15 of 2010, but that spiraled into 20, and that spiraled into 30, and so on...
2010 fucking rocked.
But yeah, Choirs Of The Eye needs more listening by me, I tried a couple of tracks but I didn't really pay attention properly. I would try it sooner, it's just quite an effort to sit and listen to a new hour long album that's not douchebag indie music.
-
I'm finding it nearly impossible to pick a favorite album ever myself. Gagh.
I might do 2010 too. I'm impressed that Sigz was able to organize this all into a list, I feel completely unable to do so. Agh.
-
IAN I'VE BEEN AWAY A WEEK ON A BAN AND THERE HASN'T BEEN AN UPDATE YET WTF MAN
-
SORRY I WAS IN BRUSSELS DRINKING BEER
-
Well, considering this is pretty much the penultimate update I've no problem with the suspense.
-
SORRY I WAS IN BRUSSELS DRINKING BEER
You are excused then.
-
-_-
-
Last update was made more then 2 weeks ago...
-
Every time someone posts in this thread, it makes me think that Sigz has finally explained why he loves Choirs of the Eye or The Alchemy Index. But it never happens.
Oh well.
-
Well we all know what the update is going to be...
-
Vanden Plas - Christ 0
-
Lol.
-
When I saw Ian last week, he accidentally let slip that #2 is Spice World.
You heard it here first.
-
Until he updates this, I'll consider that 100% accurate.
-
Posting just so 20 more people get their hopes dashed again
-
So this is what it feels like to have my hopes dashed.
-
Dashboard Confessional? at #1?? NOOOOOO
-
:bump:
-
COME ON SIGZ THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS NOW.
-
I think he's intentionally avoiding it just to fuck with us.
-
D:
-
I think Ian is making an artistic statement by not revealing his top 2. Sometimes leaving a little to the imagination is the best way to go. We can draw our own conclusions and assumptions with an open ending, and therefore, none of us feel unsatisfied.

Also, everyone knows what the top 2 are already.
So he's going to drag it out for 6 months and then he'll eventually reveal it in a three-part documentary on youtube, and even though we all know the result already, we'll still all be soiling ourselves with excitement.

Sigz called me and he had me type up his number 1 only. Yeah. I know. He was busy eating chips to type it up.
Anyway,

1. Brokencyde - I'm Not a Fan, But The Kids Like It!
Actual transcription of Sigz dictating his reasoning:
Jamesman: "So, uh, really?"
Sigz: "*sniff* Yes."
J: "Are you high or drunk or..."
S: "*hardcore scream into phone"
J: "Oh, you aren't joking. I had no idea you liked this band, let alone that their album is your number 1."
S: "Yeah, but there are a lot of things people don't know about me. Like I use my piss to cook my eggs in the morning or that I stick long cucumbers in my mouth when I am out in public. I also have a legitimate crush on Harry and have almost called him several times to ask him out. Not in a DTF-homo-erotic kind of way, but in a real "I think he is the one" kind of way."
J: "Oh. I have to go. Hot date. Later man!"
S: "Hello."

It's Kayo Dot- Choirs of the Eye and Thrice - The Alchemy Index. So there, you know.
-
2. Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye
This album is just fucking awesome. I mean, fuck, man, the first time I played it, I was just all, "Holy shit, this shit is fucked up." I was at a party with my boys, and we were all fuckin' doped up and coked up, and some guy start's playing this shit all, "Ayy listen up hurr." So you know what I says? I says, "Cha brah, this shit is good. Who's the cracka that made this shit?" And he was all, "Toby Driver, bro. Check him out. His shit is insane." And his shit really is fucking insane. This fucking album just blows my mind every time I hear it. You have to fucking hear this shit, guys, or you all suck.
1. Thrice - The Alchemy Index
Oh man, this fucking album. Fuck man, I can't even begin. This shit just makes me wanna fucking conduct some fucking alchemy all on my own. You feel me? Thrice really had their shit together with this album. I mean, it's two fucking albums, but they combine to form some really good shit. I mean, shit, this album just makes everything else on my list its bitch. Like if the albums were all people, The Alchemy Index would be all, "Hey, you fucking assholes are my bitches now. Get me my pipe and slippers." And the other albums, they'd be all like, "Ok :(" cuz they knew their shit would be fucked if they tried to fuck with him. I mean I'd be this album's bitch if it were an actual person, too. This album will just fucking kick all y'all's asses with its awesomeness. So run and tell dat.
Also I love Zander.

I'm going to be updating this multiple times a day with a few each
multiple times a day

Yeah, that whole thing failed hard. And sorry guys, I seriously did plan on finishing this thing finally last week, but I got insanely ill and have pretty much been bedridden for a good portion of the time, and there's no wifi in my house :sadpanda:
-
What's stopping you from finishing it right now? ;)

Do just Sigz, fucking It.

Alright alright
2. Thrice - The Alchemy Index:
One of the many, many reasons for the massive delay in this list was simply because I don't really know what to say about this album. To put it in the simplest terms, it's fucking brilliant. But as one would expect, the simplest terms really don't do it justice. For Thrice The Alchemy Index was the turning point - they went from being a really good, even great band to being one of the best bands modern music has had to offer.
In some ways The Alchemy Index is all of Thrice's various influences distilled into their component parts. Fire hearkens to their hardcore roots, Water to their newer electronic elements, Air to the clean electric element that's been in the background, and Earth to their folk element that's well... never really been there. And that's because The Alchemy Index isn't simply them breaking down their sound - it's them advancing it as well. Even with Fire, which is perhaps most reminiscent of their past material, there's evolution to be found. The instrumentals are less hardcore punk and more epic and textural, and Dustin's vocals have matured even further from Vheissu. Meanwhile Earth reveals a more acoustic, folky side of the band that really hadn't been heard before.
But even ignoring the history and evolution of the band, The Alchemy Index proves to be an incredible musical journey. Each volume is a concise and brilliant listen on its own - taken separately, they would all find a place on this list. But together, they become something even more. While musically there's little connecting them besides the structure of their final songs, they all join and flow into each other like the styles were meant to be juxtaposed. It's beautiful, inspiring, and devastating, and one of the greatest experiences you can ever have.
-
oh YES!
I was really hoping for Choirs of the Eye to take the number one spot! I mean, I like Thrice and all, but YES!

Yeah, stupid Zander fucked up his fake post like the nub that he is.

I gotta go listen to these albums...

TAI is my favourite from Thrice, but I can see an argument for Vheissu being their best. Not Beggars, though.
-
No, Beggars is.
btw you all suck :P
-
The Alchemy Index, Vheissu and Artist in the Ambulance are all better than Beggars.
-
I agree with Ryan, Beggars is their best. But TAI isn't overrated, it's still incredible.
-
o/
-
*\o
-
In the words of Chris during a late-night skype chat: Guys, why are we talking about music?
-
I don't know if I like TAI or Beggars better, but they're definitely top 2 for Thrice.
Man, WHAT IF THE NEW ALBUM IS EVEN BETTER
-
I'll agree with Ryan that I prefer The Color Spectrum over The Alchemy Index, but with that said... The Alchemy Index is still my favorite Thrice-release, and it is so brilliant that it is hard to describe.

I'm serious. My grandmother bought it for me when I was a little kid. I loved it then and I love it now.

I enjoy music for music's sake. I don't listen to it but once a year because the genre is not really much for me anymore at all, but once in a while I spin that album and it's great.

1. Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye: I have tried time and time again to make a really good write up for this, but I really truly couldn't, so I'm just gonna type out something and post it to get this shit done with. Simply put, Choirs of the Eye is my favorite album ever, and still one of the most unique and magical listens I've ever experienced. Combining elements of jazz, metal, post rock, and spatterings of a half a dozen other styles, Choirs is an incredible musical achievement. Numerous 'avant garde' bands combine genres, but the result is often a cut and paste type sound. Listening to a song you can say "oh, here's the metal bit", and "oh now here's a some jazz", etc. etc. With Choirs, the result is simply a new sound - even going from ethereal soundscapes to metal/screamo, it sounds as if it would be strange of them to not do such a transition. That's something I can't say about many other bands or albums, and even out of the ones I can Choirs of the Eye reins supreme.
Well, that's all folks. Sorry for all the delays and general bullshit. If you haven't listened to Choirs of the Eye do it right the fuck now.

What a fantastic finish. One of the best albums I've ever heard and it's such a grower. Fuck yeah Toby Driver.

Is the album longer than four hours? Because that's when you have to seek medical attention.
