I was wondering who else here is a fan of Shpongle, I think I've seen a few.
Anyway, if you haven't been Shpongled yet, you seriously need to be. The best cross of electronic and world music around. Every album is full of treats.
-
I most certainly am. I've only got Nothing Lasts... But Nothing Is Lost, and it's already one of my favourite albums ever. I feel like I'm not really doing it right as I'm only ever sober when I listen though. :lol
-
The thought of Shpongle on drugs scares me.
Aldo, I've always wondered what the hell is playing the solo on Nothing is Something Worth Doing around the middle. If it is a real instrument, then it is the most beautiful instrument I have ever heard. It sounds almost like a voice, but it is definitely not. Whatever it is, I want to own one.

Pretty sure most of it was written and maybe even recorded while on drugs. :lol
Anyway I love Shpongle, undoubtedly the best electronic group around. I saw them live a year or so ago and it was incredible.
-
I've been shpongling my ears for years! Love that group. The DVD is great too. I wonder if there are any similar electronic outfits like Shpongle. I've been digging around a bit, but I can't find anything quite as good in the psy-chill genre.

Yeah there are other electronic groups that I like, but I've never found another one like Shpongle.
Also, just discovered that they have a new 2-track EP coming out next week! :caffeine: It's called The God Particle, looks like it might be digital download only though.

Thanks ariich, I'll definately look out for it. That's great news!

Listening to Nothing Lasts is like soaring through the universe on a high speed train, with a few quick stops at unknown planets for sightseeing.
What an incredible album.
-
Such good music. :hat

You should have ended the sentence there.

:tup I still retain that the album has a very "traveling through space" kind of feel.
Also, to the guy who asked about similar music, check out Younger Brother's "A Flock of Bleeps." That album blew me away and has a very Shpongle-like sound.
-
Seeing them this May. SO excite!
-
They are playing a show in my city in 8 days, but when I found out about this a few months ago it was already sold out >:( I think they underestimated how many fans they have here (or they just prefer to play smaller venues). Very jealous of anyone going to see them, definitely a live show that will have incredible atmosphere.

Now more than ever I want to see them live.
I've never seen a show with emphasis on the visual before, and this looks so damn awesome.
-
HOLY CRAP, just realised Botanical Dimensions sampled Waking Life, one of my favourite films ever.
-
Shpongle is fantastic.
-
Hmm seems interesting! albums?
-
I've only listened to Nothing Lasts, which is an amazing record. I'm really looking forward to check the older releases. Nothing Lasts was an incredible starting point for me, so it might work the same for you
-
OK then :tup
-
Personally I prefer Tales of the Inexpressible, but both are really great!
-
I love it already!!!! :tup Really great stuff!!
-
Only had Nothing Lasts up until 5 minutes ago, just got their whole discography and CANNOT WAIT. They're surprisingly good homework music. :lol
-
HOLY CRAP, just realised Botanical Dimensions sampled Waking Life, one of my favourite films ever.
Just realized? But yeah, Botanical dimensions features two of the top ten things ever, Shpongle and Waking Life.
Also, it seems a lot of people here have only heard Nothing Lasts. All of you need to hear Tales of the Inexpressible NOW.
I'm not sure which I like better, but Nothing Lasts and Tales are definitely my two favorite of theirs.
-
Bump.
For fans of Shpongle, specifically their sound on Nothing Lasts... But Nothing Is Lost, I heartily recommend Gang Gang Dance's 2011 album 'Eye Contact.' It's really similar to Nothing Lasts, but it's a bit less hectic and more relaxed, and almost as awesome.
-
I will be seeing them live in Ottawa next month. Very exciting, their music is amazing.
-
I am absolutely addicted to these guys all of the sudden. I've been listening to them for a while, but it just clicked on a whole other level for me in the last few weeks. Now I have to see them live.
-
I'm a fan of Shpongle all thanks to Rich's top 50 list. Really one of the best discoveries of this year.
-
:tup :tup

What album would you recommend to start listening to this band? I'm not that into electronic music but I'm looking to expand my horizons.

Nothing Lasts But Nothing Is Lost is my favourite, and was also my starting album, and it was amazing on first listen. I'd say go with that!
-
Thanks. I'll try that
-
OH GOD THAT BAND IS FANTASTIC!!!! Just got Nothing Lasts as well as the live DVD: WOW!!! :hefdaddy :heart
-
Whoa...listening to this band for the first time right now. I think I need to check them out.
-
Bump. Been listening to them this week, really good stuff. Only have "Tales Of The Inexpressible" and "Nothing Lasts..." so far, both are very good, though the first is my favorite so far.
"Dorset Perception", "My Head Feels Like a Frisbee" and "Around the World in a Tea Daze" are my favorites so far, the music is really unique and different. Kind of a chill-vibe, but nice music to have in the background while gaming. :hat

The first one, specifically the last track (And Day Turned Into Night). That was truly a transformative experience for me in terms of my musical horizons. That was the first composition Shpongle made, and represents them best.
And then 3 albums later, Posford brings back the killer ostinato from that track on Invisible Man in a Fluorescent Suit! Posford is a genius, including his earlier Hallucinogen work.
-
New album came out today :caffeine:
-
Seriously??!! That is great news!!!!!! Thanks Sigz!
-
Seeing this thread inspired me to check out Shpongle, first stop: Tales of the Inexpressable.
Reaction: :hefdaddy
-
Yep, I've got it but haven't had a chance to listen yet!
-
I'm actually kinda disappointed by it :/
-
:(
How come?
-
So Tales is great and Nothing Lasts is even better. Holy shit this band :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
glad you're enjoying it. Yeah, they're something special. Mostly Simon Posford, but Raja Ram's influence is awesome as well.
-
I'm enjoying the new album, though Tales is still their best imo.
-
Agreed Jimmy. They've been on a very gradual downhill since Tales, but it's still been 4 solid albums.
-
So I've never heard of these guys, but I already adore one world/electronic fusion band (Afro Celt Sound System) so I'm currently on Spotify listening to Tales of the Inexpressible. So far I'm liking it - definitely similar to ACSS's first album, in a good way. A bit more repetitious than ACSS though, but I'm not bored by any of the songs yet. Looks like I might have a new discography to sink my teeth into. :tup
-
I've been playing the new album a lot lately, it's a great album.
-
Wtf it's out already? I NEED TO COME BACK FROM VACATION RIGHT NOW!!
-
After a few more listens, I'm actually liking it a lot more. Brain in a Fishtank, Aquatic Gardens, and Further Adventures are the big standouts for me right now.
-
How The Jellyfish Jumped Up The Mountain is a favorite of mine at the minute. I love the repeating, weird guitary melody around the 7 minute mark.
-
I listened to the first few tracks and it sounded a bit more uptempo/party style, while still retaining all the Shpongle elements.
-

This one seems to turn it around quite a bit. I think it's miles ahead of Ineffable Mysteries.
-
Just a heads up for the Shpongle crowd here (I know there are quite a few here at DTF). I just started streaming their latest (released two days ago) and just upon hearing the first couple of tracks I got the digital download straight away. No question, Shpongle at their shpongliest. Doing what they do best, love it.
-
Damn I didn't know they had anything new out, I was just listening to Shpongle a few days ago too.
-

Exactly the reason why I posted it. It's easy to lose sight of them, but the albums they've made throughout their 20+ years of existence are essential for me. I'd imagine there'd be people here who'd be interested.

Greetings Shpongleoids!
'Tis no ill wind; the band has released full-length video of last year's final show at Red Rocks: https://youtu.be/uRiTKZfsMQQ
Enjoyable, to say the least.
