Title: The UMH Song Roulette v. No Metal (FINAL RESULTS POSTED)
Post by: Ultimetalhead on January 22, 2011, 05:04:08 PM
Hello, one and all, and welcome to Song Roulette #1213285268246324, The UMH Edition! Participants and stuff:

lateralus88
Sigz
sonatafanica
KevShmev
skydivingninja
ariich
DTVT
AcidRainLITE

So, what should you send me? Well, you'll notice the main rule is in the title of the thread. NO METAL. Seriously, I'm already into enough metal and I'm really looking to round out my music listening habits. Send me jazz, classical, pop, rap, classic rock, country (I probably won't like it, but I'll give it a shot), indie, whatever. It's all fair game. Here's my last.fm for reference. Do note that there's obviously a whole hell of a lot of metal, so it probably won't help too much. Also note that the play counts are rather low, and that I was HUGELY into Pain of Salvation when I first got the program (about a year ago), so results are a little weird.

https://www.last.fm/user/Ultihelmethead

Round 1: Open

I'm not going to be doing a whole hell of a lot of themed rounds, since the entire roulette is already themed. There MIGHT be a metal round if enough people think they have something amazing that I haven't found yet. Hold any metal suggestions for that one. There will be 6 rounds, plus a semi-final and a final. The winner receives a Paint picture.

I think that's all. I'll edit the post if I forget anything.

Well, first off: Fantastic round, guys. Every song has made me anxious to check out the rest of the material. So, huge props for that, especially with the wide variety of genres represented here. I wish I could give all these songs full marks. :tup

5 Points - sonatafanica
Gregory and the Hawk - Oats We Sow

I really don't know what it is about this song. The combination of the simple, catchy music and the vocals is just so amazingly uplifting. If a song makes me get that warm, fuzzy feeling, I know it's something extremely special. It's just fabulous. This girl's voice has to be one of the most soothing, cute voices I've heard in my life. Absolutely spell-binding.

4 Points - DTVT
Kevin Gilbert - Shadow Self

This is one monster of a song right here. It starts off with such a great, catchy melody, and then it brings on a great groove. The groove pretty much holds through for the rest of the song. One of the things that really surprised me about this song was the vocals. There's quiet vocals, harsher vocals, and full on chanting. Then, at the very end of the song, there's an incredible layer that just sounds amazing. This one fought with sonata's song quite a bit.

4 Points - ariich
Bad Religion - 21st Century Digital Boy

Way to take note of my Offspring influence and run to the hills with it.  :metal This song just grabbed me by the face. I can't really explain it. It's one of the few songs that just instantly clicks with me and just gets better the more times I listen to it. The chorus manages to be so catchy, but it never sounds cheesy at all (much like how I feel about The Offspring's material). Oh yeah, and it's got a killer guitar solo. Awesome.

3 Points - AcidRainLTE
The Pineapple Thief - Shoot First

Awesome band name, first off.  :lol This is a song with the ultimate combination of proggy and catchy. I love the atmospheric textures in the background, especially during the main riff. Lots of really great bass too, always a plus. The singer's voice is great. It has that ethereal, ghost-like sound to it, and it works well with the song's atmosphere. The chorus, like pretty much all the other songs, is probably the best part of the song. Great vocal melodies.

3 Points - lateralus88
Flogging Molly - Tobacco Island

I don't really like to refer to songs as fun, because it's a pretty dumb description that doesn't really tell you anything about what the song sounds like, but this is a case where I think that's pretty much the only way to describe it. Having heard and loved several Dropkick Murphys songs, I knew I was going to enjoy this one. The Irish feel, the banjo, the fiddle, it all works so well with the punk sound that I can't believe that more bands don't play around with it. Oh yeah, and it's catchy as hell too.

2 Points - Sigz
Giraffes? Giraffes! - When The Catholic Girls Go Camping, The Nicotine Vampires Rule Supreme

Another A+ band title, with an even more A+ song title. I love the technical aspect, all the wonky time signatures, and the guitar solo. The bass is a nice addition as well. I really wanted to give this song three points, but I think I like it just a hair less than the Flogging Molly song. This is still a song that I would give 5 points if I could though. We're still at the top of the pile. :p

2 Points - KevShmev
The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight

This song is great too, but I'm not a big fan of the verses. When the synths come in and the female (I hope) vocals show up, that's when this song really got my attention. Then, as is the common theme with this round, the chorus made me happy inside. Great song.

1 Points - skydivingninja
Mew - Am I Wry? No

Don't get me wrong, here. It's definitely a good song. I'm just really not a fan of those types of vocals. I'll still explore more of their discography, but this one just didn't do too much for me. It's not quite as memorable as the others.

Round 2: Another Open Round

Like I said, themes aren't going to be a very big part of this roulette. I want people to send me stuff that they think I will like, and if they don't get to send me a song that they want to send because of the themes, I'd feel pretty bad. So, yeah.

Okay, so write-ups are going to be a bit short because I quite frankly can't be arsed.

5 Points - DTVT
The Dear Hunter - What It Means to be Alone

Just an excellent song here. Vocals are definitely the highlight of the song, but the instrumentation is fabulous as well. The chorus melody has been pretty much relentlessly stuck in my head since hearing it yesterday.

4 Points - KevShmev
Calexico - Minas de Cobre

Ole! Very good tune. Incredibly catchy, and I'm a sucker for these types of songs.

4 Points - sonatafanica
Bright Eyes - Waste of Paint

Another song that screams indie. Why am I not surprised? I do share your sentiments about the message of the song. Definitely feels like the ultimate creative block songs.

3 Points - Ariich
Jeff Buckley - Grace

Really good vocals. I can see how Gildenlow was influenced. I didn't see much in the way of musical similarities, but perhaps it's similar in the way that it really doesn't seem like much at first, and needs time to sink in. Not much stuck out on this one, I'm afraid.

3 Points - Sigz
Emily Wells - Symphony 2 & The Click Click Boom

Very interesting song. I don't think I've ever heard anything remotely like this. I like the girl's voice quite a bit, and the violin is a great touch.

2 Points - lateralus88
The Hold Steady - How a Resurrection Really Feels

I like the guitar tones quite a bit. It's got a 70s vibe, almost. I dig it. The singer's voice is pretty good as well.

2 Points - AcidRainLTE
Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart - Muffin Man (Live)

The chorus is pretty good. I know the verses are supposed to be funny, but meh.

1 Point - skydivingninja
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire

I swear I'm not doing this on purpose.  :lol It's just most definitely the least memorable of the tracks.

Sonatafantica - 9
DTVT - 9
Ariich - 7
KevSchev - 6
Sigz - 5
Lateralus88 - 5
AcidRainLTE - 5
SkyDivingNinja - 2

And yes, this song was stuck in my head the first time I heard it...and it gets lots of "rewinds" when I listen to this album.

I'm the same Matt, I was thinking of sending TDH in a later round, but it's presumably off-limits now! :(

Glad you dug the Jeff Buckley though. I guess the musical similarities aren't immediately as there's no metal in his music, but some of the songs definitely have a similar vibe to PoS, if that makes sense.

Also dammit more open rounds!

DISCLAIMER: This round, much like the first round, was alarmingly strong, and even the lowest scoring song is pretty awesome. Don't get too upset if you did poorly, because everyone wins this one.

5 Points - AcidRainLTE
Audioslave - Show Me How to Live

I'm really not sure why I haven't checked these guys out sooner. My favorite part of Soundgarden is the vocals, and my favorite part of RATM is the riffs. This song was pretty much destined to win the round. That main riff has the classic RATM feel, that is, heavy and groovy as fuck. The vocals are appropriately awesome. Cornell's such a beast, especially in the chorus. Another song that's going to be stuck in my head for quite a while.

4 Points - DTVT
Enchant - New Moon

First off, let me just address you on a personal level, DTVT. You are on a fast-track to winning this roulette if you continue to hit me with material as awesome as this. I'd pretty much call this THE line between progressive rock and metal. It makes perfect sense why the singer would be one of your favorites. He's amazingly good. My true praise on this song goes to the guitar player though. That was one hell of a solo. Hearing the bass is always a plus as well.

4 Points - lateralus88
The Mars Volta - Son Et Lumiere/Inertiatic ESP

This is a really great song. The intro track as it were does perfectly to set up the mood, and when the electric guitars kick in, it's a great release. The vocals are pretty awesome, but he's got kind of that girly quality that I'm not too fond of. Luckily, it goes away. Not too much to say about this one. Very solid track.

3 Points - Ariich
Deep Purple - Vavoom: Ted the Mechanic

First off, these riffs are awesome. Second, I adore the feel of the song. It's got a great 70s vibe, but it was done in the late 90s. Very admirable. Lots of catchy melodies, especially the guitar melody right before the solo and Ian's ridiculously high note. The solo's not too shabby either.

3 Points - sonatafanica
Modest Mouse - Bukowski

You're quite right. The lyrics definitely add to the song. I was pretty weary on this song, since I've never liked Modest Mouse very much, but this was a pleasant surprise. I'm not really sure why I like the song so much. I can't really pick out any individual parts that stuck out to me more than anything else, so it must just be that the sum of the parts turned out to be great.

2 Points - KevShmev
Fleet Foxes - Your Protector

This is definitely a song I could see in a Western. The song has a very soothing quality to it, mainly due to the vocals. Again, I can't really pinpoint why this is such a great song, it's just another one of those "because it is" scenarios.

2 Points - Sigz
Made Out of Babies - Silverback

"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH" indeed. I was never big on Battle of Mice, and Julie Christmas was a pretty big part of why, I'm afraid. She's a great singer, but her good vocals don't fit the music, and the vocals that do fit the music aren't that great. Still, a part of me really likes this song for some reason. It could be just the general insanity factor.

1 Point - skydivingninja
Peter Gabriel - Red Rain

God dammit.  :lol If you had sent this song last round, you probably would have easily scored in the upper tier. Repeating my above disclaimer, this song is really great, it's just not as great as the others, and it's a very thin line indeed. Very ambient and atmospheric. I dig it.

DTVT - 13
Sonatafantica - 12
AcidRainLTE - 10
Ariich - 10
Lateralus88 - 9
KevShmev - 8
Sigz - 7
SkyDivingNinja - 3

ROUND 4: A THEME?!? HOLY SHIT!!

Alright, so for the next round, I think we'll actually have a theme. As you should all know, I'm a guitar player, and a big part of music to me is the guitar work, so for the next round, let's have a song with awesome guitar work. It can be a riff, a solo, a melody, whatever. It just needs to be awesome. Since metal as a genre is also very fond of the guitar, I'm going to lift the cap on no-metal for this round only.

DAMMIT I JUST USED MY AWESOME GUITAR SONG! :lol

Also, SDN fails hard.

I'm going to have to think about this, although I have some ideas...

ANOTHER DISCLAIMER: This round was quite possibly the strongest of all, so good songs are going to do poorly. It's the nature of the beast.

5 Points - lateralus88
Firewind - The Fire and the Fury

This song is right up my alley. Shred, shred, heavy riffs, and a bit more shred. Firewind is yet another one of those bands that I know I should be listening to, but I just never get around to it. This song is fantastic, and Gus G is now pretty high on my favorite guitarists list.

4 Points - sonatafanica
Kaki King - Playing With Pink Noise

Well, you've found me a video that I could watch for hours and never get bored. I also think I'm in love. This girl has some seriously incredible talent. I remember seeing someone play an acoustic like this once, but he was not this good. The amount of precision and concentration it takes to consistently nail that kind of music, especially in front of people, is just jaw-dropping.

4 Points - Ariich
Freak Kitchen - Porno Daddy

So heavy sound, yah!  :metal That main riff is pretty much irresistible. The verses have some pretty funny lyrics as well. I'd say the chorus is the shining point of this song (and the bit of guitar noodling before it). It's still stuck in my head, and doesn't look to be going away any time soon. The solo is quite impressive as well.

3 Points - skydivingninja
Racer X - Scarified

Congratulations! You made it! I've been aware of Paul Gilbert's talent, and I've seen some random videos of his various projects, but I had never seen this one. That main riff is groovy as all hell. Another really cool thing about this band is the bassist seems to be every bit as capable as Gilbert when it comes to soloing. Awesome stuff.

3 Points - DTVT
Clockwork - If These Walls Could Talk

Really strong song. Even at this level it would still be capable of a 5 rating if the other submissions weren't so damned good. The chorus is very memorable, and the guitar work is brilliant, as expected. Definitely gives off an I&W vibe, so I can see myself appreciating the full album quite a bit.

2 Points - KevShmev
Walter Trout Band - Marie's Mood

Again, it really hurts me to put a song so beautiful this low, but 'tis a necessary evil. This is some really emotive playing. Of all the blues guitarists I've heard, I'm surprised that I haven't run across this guy. Crucial oversight on my part, apparently. The keyboard player's pretty phenomenal as well.

2 Points - AcidRainLTE
Iommi - What You're Living For

I was honestly unaware that Iommi did a solo album. I think I would have checked it out much sooner had I been aware of it. This is a great song. The vocals are pretty impressive, and the guitar, well, it's Tony Iommi. What else do I need to say?

1 Point - Sigz
Marnie Stern - Transformer

Where the hell do you find this stuff?  :lol The tapping is pretty awesome, but I had a bit of trouble getting into the song. Definitely not the worst song I've ever heard, but in a field of pure excellence, this one sticks out a bit, I'm afraid.

DTVT - 16 Points
sonatafanica - 16 Points
lateralus88 - 14 Points
Ariich - 14 Points
AcidRainLTE - 12 Points
KevShmev - 10 Points
Sigz - 8 Points
skydivingninja - 6 Points

Well, it's quite obvious that I'm going to enjoy metal a hell of a lot. It's my all-time favorite genre of everything. The whole point of this thing is to branch out, hence the no metal rule. The only reason I lifted it was to get some awesome guitar, and since metal tends to have awesome guitar, I felt that I would be limited.

5 Points - Sigz
Skywatchers - The Curious Village
There are very few cases that I can think of where a music video actually enhances a song. This video takes the song and brings it to a whole new level of trippy. The soothing melodies and strangely discomforting instruments make such an amazing contrast. That, combined with the video imagery made this song one that's going to stick in my mind for quite a while.

4 Points - Ariich
Asia - Gone Too Far
Man, this is screaming "LOOK AT ME I'M A CLASSIC ROCK EPIC" right out of the gates. It's not a bad thing at all. There's plenty of epics that start out like this. I personally get a strong "Dream On" vibe from this one. The plucking melodies behind the vocals provide a great background for the vocals. The break into the (amazing) solo is pretty unique though, with the drum fill. I have to say though, that the first solo operates in the same way as Comfortably Numb's first solo. That is, lovely, but you're about to be completely shocked at the second solo. That solo is probably my favorite moment of any song sent in this entire roulette so far, and that's saying something.

4 Points - sonatafanica
Best Coast - Our Deal
I'll have to admit that I don't listen to much surf rock, let alone MODERN surf rock, but this is really awesome. I don't really think I could picture myself surfing to this music though. This is definitely "relax on the beach with a mermaid" kind of music, and it's one of the rare instances where music actually takes me somewhere within my own head. Such a simple song too. Amazing.

3 Points - KevShmev
Yes - Mood For a Day
Great little tune, here. The only Yes songs I'm really familiar with are Roundabout and Close to the Edge, and they're quite epic indeed. This is some really awesome guitar work. The melodies are very relaxing, and it still manages to be rather technical. I'll definitely have to explore Yes further if this is the kind of stuff I'm missing out on.

3 Points - AcidRainLTE
Tomahawk - God Hates A Coward
I really like this song. The atmosphere is just so dreary, and the bridge reminds me a lot of Dog Fashion Disco when they do whisper sections. I could see how someone might be turned off by the vocal style on the song, but I think it works really well for what it seems like the band is trying to achieve. The keyboard sweeps are awesome too. My only major gripe with this one is it built up so much atmosphere, and it just sort of ends. Could have gone on a bit longer, methinks.

2 Points - skydivingninja
King's X - Pretend
Ah, my love for The Jelly Jam has prepared me well for this song. I really love Tabor's vocals on the two Jelly Jam albums and on Connect the Dots off of 01011001, and knowing that he's in this band, I was really looking forward to some good old Ty, alas, he doesn't sing lead in this band. Shame, really. This song was pretty great though, and the chorus is quite infectious.

2 Points - lateralus88
Cake - Italian Leather Sofa
I'm pretty sure my ex-girlfriend liked this band. She never had me listen to any of it, but I can definitely see why she liked it. It's really bouncy, and the vocals have a strange quality. I'm not really sure how to describe it. The lyrics are quite hilarious, and are probably the best aspect of the song. As a trumpet player, I find it really cool that this band manages to have a trumpet player in a band and not sound like ska. It's definitely a cool song, but it's not something I could see listening to a whole album of it

1 Point - DTVT
Faith No More - Zombie Eaters
This is a pretty cool song. The buildup to the breaking point of the song is pretty forgettable, but when it gets going, this song gets good remarkably fast. Unfortunately, as with the other 2 Faith No More songs I've heard (Epic and Midlife Crisis), in that I like it, but I don't have much desire to check anything else out by them. There are some really great moments in this song (the outro riff kicks ass), but as a whole it's kind of boring.

sonatafanica - 20 Points
Ariich - 18 Points
DTVT - 17 Points
AcidRainLTE - 16 Points
lateralus88 - 16 Points
KevShmev - 13 Points
Sigz - 13 Points
skydivingninja - 8 Points

The complaint you made about God Hates a Coward is remedied by listening to the album as a whole, I feel.

Obviously that couldn't be done for this but yeah.

If you want to check it out, it's from their self titled album.

Doug Pinnick (aka the LitS guy) is a much better vocalist than Ty.  I must be losing my edge, I've scored points these last two rounds.

Alas, there's really no point in trying to win the next round if I'm getting kicked out anyway.  Maybe I'll send you something that will maybe help you realize that not all vocals above a certain octave are automatically "whiny" when they're not surrounded by swirling mythic metal.

I don't think that at all. If I really believed that, I'd absolutely despise Rush. It just so happens that vocalists like Claudio and the guy from Mew just sound whiny. It's not just because it's in a high register.

I had the same deal with Claudio at first too, but Jonas from Mew just has this beautiful, ethereal, magical, childlike voice that fits their playful and emotional music perfectly.

In my opinion, which it beautifully objective.

Whether a singer is whiny is not subjective.  It can bother me in singers, but I hear it in neither Claudio nor Jonas.

I find children to be whiny wastes of oxygen, so maybe that's just me.  :P

And how in the hell are whiny vocals not subjective? They sound whiny to my ears. You can say the same thing with guitar solos/riffs. e.g, "Man, that riff is so heavy". You might not think in the same way.

Well, I was giving it a fair shake. I don't really consider hearing 2 songs from a band "knowing" them well enough to form a judgment on their entire discography. It's okay, you're still poised to make it to the semi-finals.

I can see how someone would call Claudio's voice whiny.  Especially on the first two albums when they were straying further from their punk/emo roots.  But I don't see how Jonas' voice is whiny at all.  Its kind of exactly how Sonata perfectly described it.

The only real problem I have with you not liking high-octave singers outside of metal is that those are typically my favorite kinds of vocalists, which makes sending songs for this roulette somewhat difficult.  You'd probably call Matt Bellamy or Thom Yorke whiny as well, which keeps me from sending awesome songs from Muse and Radiohead. :(

EDIT: dammit lateralus I was going to send a Mars Volta song but I can't because you had to submit it earlier.

God damn you.

I knew you'd like the things that I like about that Asia song, but I took a risk as I wasn't sure how much you'd dig the classic rock vibe. Glad you liked it though!

Hmm, what to send next...?

5 Points - Ariich
The Cat Empire - Fishies
I've been thinking a lot about how to start off this write-up. I figured I could mention how this is the best thing I've ever heard. Then, I thought I'd tell the story about how I've wondered if music like this existed (I've been into ska-punk for a while, but always wanted something focused on the horns). Finally, I decided I'd start it this way: OMGWTFBBQ THE TRUMPET. I've been playing the trumpet for about 7 years now, and up until this point I've never found music with good trumpet that was worth listening to 500 times. This song (and the album, I listened to it straight after hearing this song) is pure bliss. The Latin vibe in the bass sets the mood perfectly, and those unique vocals come in to set up the story. The pre-chorus gives away that something awesome is coming, and BOOM TRUMPET MELODY. This melody has been stuck in my head for the past 4 days. Seriously. The trumpet/piano duel in the middle of the song is just amazing too. You said you thought this was a risky move, but you ended up defining "High risk=High reward". Congratulations.

4 Points - KevShmev
Camel - Lunar Sea
Now this is just delicious. Camel is a band I've wanted to explore for quite some time, but I never really knew where to start. This one certainly seems like a perfect introduction to the band. The synth textures are great, and when the odd-time groove kicks in it just gets better. I love how the synth solos lay over top the softer sections, and then the guitar solos play over the more turbulent sections. Great contrast. Old prog in general is kind of a grey area for me. I like King Crimson, Rush, and some other random songs by older bands (like Yes), so I was waiting for something like this. Great stuff.

4 Points - DTVT
Marillion - Sugar Mice
Well, it definitely makes perfect sense to use a bit of this song in Surrounded. Extremely similar vibe. Since I'm quite fond of Surrounded, so I didn't have much trouble appreciating this song. Everything about this song is really relaxing and ethereal. I feel like if I believed in heaven that this would be the song playing while I was ascending up to kick it with Jesus and the crew. I've honestly never been much of a fan of Fish, but he's pretty great here. The guitar solo is fabulous as well, and reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd (Mother, especially. Makes sense considering Chaos In Motion used that bit as well). Looks like I definitely need to get this album, as I know quite a few people on DTF are crazy for it.

3 Points - lateralus88
Estradasphere - Smuggled Mutation
I had absolutely no idea what to expect with this one. The band name, the song title, the opening seeing a strange guy playing the violin. I was waiting for it to turn into a basic song, but it never did. It turned into Fiddle Metal. :metalol: I was considering marking this down a point because of the metal, but it's not the focus of the song. The focus is on the violin and the accordion. That said, this song is complete and total chaos, and I adore it. Must explore further.

3 Points - skydivingninja
My Morning Jacket - What a Wonderful Man
Very stately piano intro. This song reminds me a lot of The Beatles. I was honestly amazed to find out that this band wasn't from the early 70s. Sure, the production values are obviously quite a bit better than 70s production would have been, but this gets that vibe across almost TOO well. Congrats on picking a singer who doesn't sound whiny this time.  ;)

2 Points - Sigz
Brand New - Degausser
Hitting me again with that dreamy music. Can't say I'm complaining. This is a really great song. The vocalist has a really great voice, especially when he's harmonizing. The transition into the heavier section is just awesome. Sadly, the singer's voice kind of goes sour. I think it would have helped the song to keep the vocal tone from the verses. Still a good song though.

2 Points - sonatafanica
Bjork - Hyperballad
I've been kicking myself for 4 days over this song. I told you to send me Bjork, and I end up not caring for it that much. I'm so ashamed. It's definitely not a bad song, but it's just not all that interesting to me. The focus is clearly on her vocals, and while I can definitely appreciate that, I just need a bit more to listen to. On the plus side, I do dig the electronic vibe, and the driving backbeat. It's not really so much her voice either, she has a really great tone. I just kind of have some issues with the way she pronounces certain words. More of a pet peeve than anything. It gets better as it presses on with more layers added to the background, and I'll definitely explore further, but this was a bit of a disappointment.

1 Point - AcidRainLTE
Static Crap - Journey Through The Moor (Live)
This song defines pure excellence. The seemingly incoherent ranting actually tells a multi-faceted story full of rich lines and astounding character development. The echoing in the vocals combined with the synth textures give a very mysterious vibe, wondering how dangerous this journey must have been. The ending with the poor protagonist's suicide over Brian's house is just a flawless ending that ends abruptly to show how sudden death can be. A truly poetic masterpiece. However, I have to mark off 4 points because you broke the unwritten Static Crap rule. Sending in the greatest band known to mankind is simply cheating. Sorry.

Ariich - 23 Points
sonatafanica - 22 Points
DTVT - 21 Points
lateralus88 - 19 Points

KevShmev - 17 Points
AcidRainLTE - 17 Points
Sigz - 15 Points
skydivingninja - 11 Points

Finalists are in bold. To the rest of you: Good job. You all introduced me to at least one thing that I'm itching to explore further. Yes, even SDN.

Semi-Final Round: Open
What an enormous surprise. An open round, even for the semi-finals. I swear there will be a theme for the final, but in this round we will be eliminating 2 people. The 2 songs I like the most will be awarded tickets to the ultimate final round of the UMH Song Roulette!

YAY! :D

So glad you liked it so much dude. The Cat Empire are one of my absolute favourite bands, and So Many Nights is definitely my favourite album of theirs. All their albums are good, but I'd probably recommend their self-titled debut as the next place to go. Less variety than SMN, but lots of fun, lots of trumpet, and lots of latin vibe. The backing horn players are really good, but it's the lead trumpeter who is just incredible, and he's also the guy who sings the high falsetto type stuff. And he also does scat singing. Seriously if they ever play near you, you have to go see them, their gig was probably the most fun show I've ever been to.

FINALIST - Ariich
Ark - Just A Little
2 times in a row now, you've sent me something that had my jaw on the floor. The vibe in the beginning of this song is amazing, and it gives off the same mood as the bridge of Learning to Live. Instead of getting James LaBrie throwing F#'s around, though, we get the far too overlooked Jorn Lande. This guy has such a powerful voice, but almost nobody ever talks to him. This song only reinforces my wondering as to why. His singing on this song (and any other song he sings on) is so emotive, it can take a mediocre song and turn it into a masterwork. Thankfully, this song kicks ass to begin with, so we're left with a clusterfuck of awesomeness. The solo section with the keyboard/guitar trade-off is a perfect bridge, and Jorn's ad-libbing over the final chorus just brings the song right home. Flawless.

FINALIST - DTVT
Frameshift - Arms Races
Well, this is a nice piece of prog metal we've got here. All the ingredients are in place: Heavy riffage, epic solos, awesome keyboards, and James LaBrie. Unfortunately, when you have one of the most recognizable voices in progressive music, it's tough to get by without sounding a bit generic. Ayreon had no problem using LaBrie, since there were so many stylistic shifts. Without hearing the full album, I can't be sure that this is a problem, but it's the only real issue I have with this song. The vocals are outstanding, of course, the chorus is catchy and sticks right in my brain, the solos are just awesome, and in a desperate attempt to make this sentence go on for just a bit longer, I'll mention the cool little bass fill in the intro. Great stuff.

ELIMINATED - sonatafanica
Norrin_Radd - Anomally
I've been waiting for this. All this talk I've heard from you about chiptune and I had been purposely avoiding it knowing that you'd be in the roulette bombarding me with it, and it took this long. I must say, I'm not disappointed. This is everything I love about video game music, with tasty death growls over top of it. What the fuck's not to love? The only issue is that the death growls really clash with the 8-bit stuff, and while it's something I could fathom loving eventually, I'm not too fond of it at the moment. Overall, you have performed excellently in this roulette, and you've only confirmed the reason why I picked you. You have a fabulous, diverse taste in music, and shouldn't be ashamed of your performance in this roulette. Rock on.  :metal

ELIMINATED - lateralus88
Psyclon 9 - Crwn Thy Frnicatr
Well, this is out there, to say the least. I totally dig the pounding bass drum and the Rammstein-like riffage and keyboards. This reminds me a whole hell of a lot of Rammstein's first album, honestly. However, there is one huge, glaring, screaming exception. The vocals aren't all that great. They definitely fit the song, but this could benefit a lot from having a clean vocalist like Till. This isn't a bad song at all, but it happened to come out the weakest in this round. Sorry for your luck, mang. The only reason you didn't win this is because I already listen to everything you like.  :tup

ROUND 8: Stolen Idea Theater v. Rich
Send me an album. I've received quite a few remarks that the albums these songs come off of are ridiculously strong, and before you ask, I'll just answer right here. No. Find something different unless it got less than 3 points, and if that's the case, it had better be a mighty impressive album. Bring it on.

Battle of debut albums.  I like both albums, so the real winner is UMH.

Ariich
Haken - Aquarius

This album is just awesome. I've heard tons of praise for these guys this past year, but never really cared enough to check them out. Foolish move on my part. This is some really good, unique progressive metal. The songs are epic, the vocals are top notch, and the musicianship is just plain out of this world. This is a band with a lot of potential, and I can't wait to see what they do with this stuff.

DTVT
Cynic - Focus

Another band that I've heard plenty about, but never bothered to explore. I'm very well aware of the acclaim this album has received, and now I can finally say I know why. This is some very insane music. The vocal interplay between the growling and the...clean-ish(?) vocals really makes this band interesting. Of course, it's not all heavy and straight-forward. Textures has such awesome bass soloing over the quiet guitar. Overall, this album ripped into my inner death metal fan and demanded me to obey.

So, without further ado, the winRAR is.....

DTVT

Amazing job to you both. You guys definitely deserved to be in the finals with all the awesomeness you have bestowed upon me. Though DTVT has won the roulette, Rich sent me my personal favorite band from this roulette, The Cat Empire. Congratulations, men. You've done very well.

Schweet, glad you liked it so much! :D Haken should have a new album out later this year, hopefully I'll get to hear a song or two from it when I see them live in a month.

Congrats DTVT! :tup I really need to check out Focus, I have Traced in Air which is pretty good, but most people consider Focus a lot better.

Really Justin?  You never heard Focus before?  What kind of prog/metal fan are you?  Seriously.  God you fail so much.

Anyways, so I can start my roulette now/soon, right?

Yes, but I doubt you've ever skydived in your life, nor are you a ninja.  ;)

That said, is it so impossible to miss one classic album in a sea of thousands?

Thanks, good game Rich.  I'll have to check out The Cat Empires...any suggestions where to start?

Not when you imply that you are the ultimate (or at least the Ulti) metalhead and typically prove yourself to be so except in this case.

Oh, and you know how Buddy Holly's plane crashed?  That was me.  It was an accident, but we got "American Pie" out of it, so its not all bad.

Either the song "Fishies" or the album "So Many Nights"

So...I'm unaware of one classic album? I think you might be slightly bitter. You can't really call me a failure when you performed so poorly in the roulette. :neverusethis:

You've listened to Focus.  Surely you know what a crime it is that you hadn't listened to it before now?

And I only performed so poorly because you fail.

Between his age and lack of funds one has at that age, I think asking him to have listened to every "ground breaking" album is a little too much.
