Since the tragic passing of A7X’s drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, the band turned to legendary Dream Theatre drummer Mike Portney in to help with the recording of their latest record Nightmare, and also at their recent live shows.
Mike was only ever going to be a temporary stand-in though, and recently the 2009, the band turned to legendary Dream Theatre drummer Mike Portney band announced that they were on the look out for someone else to take his place.
In a message on their website today, Avenged revealed that Arin Ilejay will be banging the drums with them at their forthcoming live dates.
“We recently asked several friends who knew Jimmy and his style, and also knew our music and each of our personalities to suggest drummers to tour with,” said Avenged in a statement today.
“Our long time studio drum tech, Mike Fasano, recommended Arin Ilejay. We've rehearsed with Arin and have been impressed with his technical skills, attitude and work ethic.”
“We're very excited to tour with Arin and hope all of you will give him the warm welcome to the family we have.”

This does make the lack of announcement of a new DT drummer a little bit galling.
-
No idea who he is, but good for them. :tup

Exactly how I felt.

At first I felt the same as you two.
Then I looked at it from another angle.
When you're A7X...and..lets call them, as a band, a Honda Accord.....it's pretty easy to go out and find Honda replacement parts.
When you're Dream Theater.....and lets call them...a Mibach......kinda tricky to go out and find replacement parts for a Mibach. Takes a little longer.

Yeah, but they already FOUND a replacement "part". DT has a drummer right now, they just won't release who it is.
But thats cool for A7X I guess.

I would have felt that way if A7X had announced their drummer 3 years ago, back when DT got theirs. Now I'm just like "whatever".
-
Luck kid there. Better not fuck it up. I'll reserve me opinions till later.

LOVE IT OR DIE

Nice to see you agree.

Really? I'm the first one to point out that they called them Dream Theatre? :lol
-
This doesn't particularly irritate me in regards to DT, but it does surprise me that A7X has already named a new permanent drummer when one of the grounds for dismissing MP was that they were not ready to make someone a permanent member yet.
-
Glad they found someone. Now maybe people will stop fucking asking me if Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater to join Avenged Sevenfold.

The release does not say he is their permanent drummer. It says he will be filling in on the remaining tour dates.

Oh, my mistake.

I still think he did in spite of his denial. But, I'm sure that discussion would be more appropriate in another thread.

Same. All the A7X fans I know always say he left DT to join A7X.

And Mike Portney.
But yes, this does make DT's reticence more annoying to me, really.

And in case anyone forgets this is what A7X said when Portnoy left:
(Our) friends have introduced us to several amazing drummers. We have decided to take one of them out starting in January. He will not be a member of a7x. He will be someone you and we are getting to know. Perhaps this drummer will be a fit. Perhaps not. One thing is for sure. Over time we will find someone who helps us continue our quest to make the music we love for the fans we love.
-
"when Portnoy left"
You mean "shortly after Portnoy was not asked to join them on the next leg of the tour"
Just giving you shit. You're completely correct about A7X and how this does not contradict anything they've said so far.
-
They're really none too ready to commit to a permanent drummer, are they?
Understandably, of course, given all that happened. Still, would be weird if they turned into a sort of tragic Spinal Tap.

Probably because he's too focused on his rap career.
