Title: Depeche Mode
Post by: Ravenheart on January 15, 2011, 09:49:24 PM
I meant to make this thread like a month ago, but whatever. Anyway, I only discovered them just last year, but they've quickly become one of my favorite bands. They've made some of the most gorgeous, emotional, heartfelt, and catchy music I've ever heard. Martin Gore is an ingenious lyricist that pours his heart into everything he does. If you can't relate to at least one Depeche Mode song, you have no soul.

Discuss plz.

YEAH, THAT'S THEM. THEY ACTUALLY HAVE WAY BETTER SONGS THAN THAT, BUT PJ IS STILL GOOD.

I WOULDN'T MIND A RECOMMENDATION OR TWO.

Phew, I'm glad I got all that yelling out.

Black Celebration is my favorite. It's dark, but it's got some really catchy stuff, too: Question of Lust, Question of Time, Here is the House, But Not Tonight, and the title track is amazing. Music for the Masses is good, too. Violator is probably their most accessible, and it's got Personal Jesus. Songs of Faith and Devotion is a classic as well. You can't go wrong with any of their albums, but those are the ones I would recommend first.

I have them all, and Music For The Masses and Violator are my favourite albums of theirs. Songs Of Faith And Devotion is great as well, it has a little more rock elements to it (distorted guitars). I'm not a synth guy at all, but Depeche Mode is an exception to this.

They're still putting out good albums, too, even though they've been around a long time.  Their most recent, Sounds of the Universe, is pretty good.  And the one before that, Playing the Angel, is as good as Violator, one of their classics.

Excellent band.  :tup

They are one of my favorite artists. Every album from Some Great Reward to Songs Of Faith And Devotion is a masterpiece and then Playing The Angel is on par with these albums too. Other albums are great but not as good as these... It's very hard to choose a favorite one but Black Celebration would be probably my favorite too

But Not Tonight isn't on Black Celebration it's good song but it doesn't fit on that album at all. If it would be there Black Celebration would definitely decrease in overall quality because it would ruin the consistent and amazing dark mood which is present through whole album it's just a B-Side from Black Celebration. And I know that on US version or somewhere it is included at the end but it doesn't matter cause originally it fortunatelly wasn't part of the album.

It's great cover and it's really good that it's so different from the original but it doesn't touch the original for me. Basicly because of the vocals and the fact that World In My Eyes is one of my favorite songs by DM and my favorite section of the song which is after the last chorus or last that's all there is line is too much flat and bland compared to the original awesomeness for me. But it's still great cover

I pretty much listened to only hard rock and metal when I was a kid, and then when I was in the 8th grade, I gave Depeche Mode a serious listen and it opened so many doors for me. Then I started obsessing over groups I used to refer to as "English 80's wuss music," haha. Black Celebration and Music for the Masses are their two best albums in my opinion, but I also really love Some Great Reward, Songs of Faith and Devotion, Violator, A Broken Frame, and Ultra. Playing the Angel was also decent--probably their coldest, most depressing album in many years. They also have a bunch of killer b-sides.
I am glad that DM is getting a lot of love on these boards :)

Johnny Cash's cover of Personal Jesus is pretty cool too, it is kind of bluesy.

I quite like In Flames' cover, but it never hooked me. It was Dan Swano's cover of Shake the Disease that convinced me to finally give DM a thorough listen. I'm glad I did, because I can't get enough of them. I've been listening to them for only a few months, and they're already 3rd on my last.fm. AREN'T I COOL?!

I just listened to Rammstein's, In Flames' and Cash's covers. Dunno, the only one that was cool was Cash's. The other stuff was essentially "lol, distorted guitars make everything sound cool!!".

I like Depeche Mode. They're a nice break from my otherwise mainly rock/metal oriented musical preferences :) I particularly like Violator as an album, and I have several single songs I like very much.

Selected Discography
Sounds Of The Universe Their 2nd best album in my view
Violator
Sounds Of Faith And Devotion
Alan Wilder's last albums and tours with Depeche Mode
Music For The Masses Turned Synth-Pop pioneers into fully fleged stadium rock arena gods
Ultra, Exciter, Playing The Angel
Brought back Depeche Mode from the ashes with that unmistakeable DM sound

I agree with you there. Playing the Angel definitely established that DM can still be creative, exciting, fresh, and inspirational even that late in their careers.

Also, Andrew Fletcher said they'll be back in the studio soon to record a new album. YAY.

"Sounds of the universe" was awfull.

"Delta Machine" is really better (not too difficult...), there are some songs I really love, like "Angel", "Sooth my soul", "Goodbye","Heaven", "Soft Touch/Raw Nerve", "Slow" and "Long time lie".
But I don't like the rest of the album.

"Delta Machine" is a good album, definitely not a great one.

My DM top 5 remains unchanged (and I think it will stay the same):
 - 1) Songs of faith and devotion
 - 2) Violator
 - 3) Ultra
 - 4) 101
 - 5) Playing the angel.

It's alright. It doesn't touch stuff like Playing the Angel, Violator or Black Celebration, but it's fairly enjoyable.

I never actually checked out Sounds of the Universe, so I can't compare the two, really.

Man, I could not disagree more. I listened to Delta Machine two days ago, and it was soooo underwhelming. Seriously, there is barely anything going on in those songs. Sounds of the Universe is awesome though. In Chains, Wrong, Fragile Tension, Peace, the general atmosphere of the record. I love it.

Sounds Of The Universe was okay it has some pretty good songs some very good songs but overall it wasn't fascinating at all. Delta Machine on the other hand is IMO their best album since Violator all the way it's incredibly consistent there are no weaker points well maybe My Little Universe which could have some more variety but it's still interesting song. And there are songs that are really flawless like Welcome To My World, Broken, Should Be Higher, Alone, Goodbye. I can't get enough of this album and I really love Depeche Mode I'm really looking forward to see them live :)

I felt Sounds of the Universe was excellent, their best album since Violator. Delta Machine goes on "kinda" the same vein but each album has a different vibe to it and takes a few listens to really soak in. Not sure where this album will fit in? I like it, but I'm not as impressed with it as I was with SotU. But there are some stellar tracks on this album. I find the last half of the album better than the first half. And as always they save the best for last. This seems to be a regular thing for them.  :tup

It was recorded in 89 and released 5th feb 1990 so yea technically it's not released in the 80s but it feels very 80ish.

That's really not important though, I just love the production quality and how good the band sounds in this video, their covers are always excellent.  :)
