Title: Disappear Appreciation Thread
Post by: TheVoxyn on January 12, 2011, 10:59:52 AM
I hardly ever check this section, but I was bored and read some threads. I saw in the  'Most favourite of least favourite' thread that a lot of people chose Disappear as worst song from Six Degrees and some people also ranked it pretty low. This suprised me a bit, as it's an awesome song.

Pretty much the only song by DT that I still listen to on regular basis and the only song in DT's catologue that is pretty emotional (for me at least).

*appreciates*

Absolutely love this song.  The lyrics are really powerful and the music itself has this eerie yet sorrowful feel to it.  It has a more personal meaning to me too, so that's probably why I appreciate it so much.  It takes me back to a time when I wanted to "disappear", as cliche or lame as that sounds.   :-\

Easily one of my top 5 DT songs. I hardly listen to it though because it actually makes me too sad. I like to save it for special occasions.

I appreciate Disappear, its awesome on L@B, would have been even better with the Octavarium Orchestra.

I am wondering however, how long is it going to be before there is an appreciation thread for every song.

If every song on an album is awesome, then even a great track will be ranked last. Somebody has to be last.

Love this song. It's probably the only Dream Theater song that has ever emotionally moved me to tears, a feat that has yet to be repeated since then.

I also love the fact that, of the two times it was ever played live, both have been released! Can't say that about any other Dream Theater song (every live version of a song being released by the band, that is).

Top 5 all time for me as well...it's incredibly beautiful and I've always loved the strange intro and outro (strangely reminded me of Max Payne; perhaps I played the game and heard SDOIT around the same time).

I Bought Six Degrees right after my grandfather passed. I bought a lot of music then, I guess it was part of the grieving process for me. I'd borrowed it from a friend and listened to it several times before this, I never really payed much attention to Disappear.

But then I heard it again that day. I believe it was actually the day he passed. And the lyrics were so similar to what happened. Particularly the last stanza/verse. I still have trouble listening to it without getting all choked up. We had to put my dog just a few days ago under similar circumstances and Disappear hits me all the harder now.

Amazing song.

there are very few songs these days when musicians/bands tap into something completely beautiful and unique. and although this song can be likened to bands like radiohead (maybe), its dream theaters best song and the one i beleive the "music gods" where with them.

Honestly, I love the studio version, but the live version is just terrible. Sure, its the same song and arrangement, but playing it faster just kills the mood for me. I can't listen to it.

Does anyone know why they played it faster live? Time reasons?

I have this whole mini-movie that plays in my head when I listen to this song.  There are flashback scenes in a park during summer of James walking with a woman, then "current day" images that are James walking alone in the same park during Autumn, interspersed with scenes of them with the woman in a hospital bed.

Oh god no. I'm not particularly fond of the lyrics to TBOT regardless of the circumstances in which they were written.

"Space Dye Vest" is easily the most emotional sonng written under the Dream Theater name. Its simply unmatched in terms of emotional atmosphere and construction.
Title: Re: Disappear Appreciation Thread

Well I find it to be emotional.

It's about reincarnation and not being scared of death. It's written from a characters point of view, what's the emotion? It just has cliche melodies/chord changes and solos with lots of high bends.

Pretty much every song is emotional in some manner, ya know.  Sadness is not the only emotion, ya know. ;)

For example, "The Count of Tuscany" is very emotional, considering that fear is a very powerful emotion.
Title: Re: Disappear Appreciation Thread
Post by: Adami on January 17, 2011, 02:35:50 PM
Emotionally charged is different than just singing about an emotion.
Title: Re: Disappear Appreciation Thread
Post by: KevShmev on January 17, 2011, 02:38:30 PM
That is fine, but considering what "The Best of Times" is about - sadness, one of the most powerful emotions in the world - you can't tell me that that song isn't every emotional.  If you don't connect with it, that is fine, but at its core, it is a very emotional song.  The sadness of the lyrics and subject matter is conveyed well in the music, especially during both the intro and the second half of the song.
Title: Re: Disappear Appreciation Thread

To be honest, I can get behind the argument for TBOT.

TSCO, and TMOLS however, I can not. Being filled with musical cliches isn't enough.

I'm very surprised with the posts saying this is there all time FAVORITE song by DT. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but are you absolutely sure there's no other DT song you like more?

As for my thoughts on the song, I really like it and it definitely earns my appreciation. Amazing lyrics, and as someone mentioned earlier it has that eerie sound that makes it very unique.

It's not really a tough decision for me to put this as my favorite DT-song, because even if i made a top10, nr2 would still be a division under it.
It's like, my music-taste has changed ever since i was 'heavily into DT', but even though i'm not that into 'classic' progressive-music anymore, Disappear is still a song i love, because it's so emotional.

Creeps the shit out of me.

In a GOOD way.

It makes the listener want to cry, which is pretty incredible. It works so well in context of any Dream Theater music (much like most of their "ballads") because the simplicity only works (but works very well) in contrast with the rest. If this song had no context, it might not mean so incredibly much.

I'm actually shocked that I haven't posted in this thread before.

I absolutely adore the guitar and keyboard intro. The tone and composition give a slightly deranged quality to ever present sadness. Of course, this is one of the greatest performances by JLB. Ever!

Some days, this is my favorite DT song. I often find myself craving to hear it.

I think James LaBrie is the most underrated lyricist in the band and these lyrics are pretty good but the song as a whole is just...a really good song.

It's also one I never have the urge to listen to and its also the least exciting on Disc 1.  Really there is nothing bad about it....its just not as good as the rest.

So I'm moving on
I'll never forget
As you lay there and watched me
Accepting the end
I knew you were scared
You were strong I was trying
I gave you my hand
I said it's okay letting go time to leave here
And I'll carry on
The best that I can without you here beside me
Let him come take you home

I'm not crying.

I actually think his lyrics are the best of DT. Yes, JMX lyrics are more poetic, but I find JLB lyrics more relatable (and quite poetic too). Even in his solo albums there are some amazing lyrics.

I agree.  I love his lyrics to CIAW, Anna Lee, and Blind Faith.  The rest are almost equally kickass.  I especially love his lyrics on Elements of Persuasion.  For some reason, the song doesn't do all that much for me although I can't deny its a great song with great lyrics

I think the song has real impact on people who actually shared the experience of the story in the song's lyrics. For example, I watched my father die in his bed. We had our goodbyes, I saw the fear in his eyes, and then resignation. And then he closed his eyes, it never opened again, and we watched over him for a couple of hours as his breathing slowed down until he died.

This song captures that experience perfectly. The music fits, with the depressing shit feeling (the haunting intro), the monotony (the very deliberate, almost lifeless music as JLB sings "why, tell me the reasons why..."), the feeling that you don't want to move but you have to (when the drums enter to give a beat), and then the burst of trying to be positive (captured by DT when they entered full rock band with JLB singing "So I'm moving on..."), but still ending up feeling like shit anyway (which was captured by the ending which just went back to the intro music). The mark of an excellent song is when the music tells the story as much as the lyrics, and Disappear is excellent in that regard.

The mood this song sets up is amazing.

This.

Beautiful emotional song with a thrilling atmosphere. A soul sibling to SDV. Brings me to tears most of the times I listen to it.

On my top 10.

Found this old thread in the song topic topic and just had to share that like the original poster, 'Disappear' stands out as my all-time favorite in Dream Theater's catalog. Not only are its lyrics powerful, emphasizing the importance of cherishing our time with loved ones, but it also feels exceptionally unique compared to their other tracks.

I couldn't agree more!

A little more of that 'vibey' tone on the later albums would've gone a long way in my opinion.

Out of Reach captured some of that, I think.

Easily my favorite ex poster. I will continue to miss him.

I had to read this twice to get it. My feelings about that guy were all over the place. Once I got his posting style, it made reading his musings much easier.

Oh, and yeah, top 10 DT song for me.

It might be the worst song on the record, and I still love it. SDOIT is the best album of theirs.

Wow that post of mine 12 years old! I honestly don't even remember a user by that name anymore. I went and did a member search but didn't see it.

Huh.

Perhaps my all time favorite DT song. Heartbreaking and haunting. I hope to see it live some day.

He regularly posts on 5/8, that's why. Maybe he got banned? I could see it happening.

disappear is not just a song; it's an experience. it's a song that can make you cry, make you think, and make you appreciate the people and things in your life. it's a song that can heal a wounded heart and bring solace to a troubled mind.

Yeah, I don't believe he ever made it on this iteration of the forum. I remember his avatar was David Hasselhoff

space-dye vest originally is about a dude dealing with the aftermath of a breakup, but if you reinterpret it in the context of disappear it becomes a song of someone being so hurt and traumatized by the loss of a loved one that they become too emotionally broken to open up to anyone out of fear of experiencing that sort of pain again

even better, listen to this playlist

the a mind beside itself suite to establish character with mental health issues, then scarred to add an element of family abuse “can’t let them rape me again” misunderstood for isolation, eve for character falling in love, these walls for character trying to seduce love interest

the mirror + lie for alcohol and trust issues, which results in light fuse and get away, speak to me for the love interest becoming distant due to the protagonist’s issues

the answer lies within for someone comforting the protagonist

repentance for the protagonist realizing he must make amends but before he can

vacant for the love interest succumbing to an illness, stream of consciousness for protagonist’s emotions

disappear for love interest’s death and finally space-dye vest for the protagonist being so hurt and traumatized by the loss of a loved one that they become too emotionally broken to open up to anyone out of fear of experiencing that sort of pain again
