Title: Effloresce: Opeth-esque with female vocals
Post by: contest_sanity on January 12, 2011, 01:09:22 AM
For anybody who downloaded the free Mike Portnoy tribute album that was posted a little while ago, I am really getting into the band Effloresce, which had a couple of songs on there.  Their stuff just came up randomly on my itunes and I was like "what is this pretty cool prog metal?"  I checked and saw it was from the MP tribute.  My next thought was, "I wonder how long before some awful vocals come in and ruin it?"  Then this beautiful female vocal begins, and I am intrigued.  Then, imagine my further shock when, a couple minutes later, this same vocalist begins growling savagely.  And then shifting immediately back to clean vox.  Repeat this sequence a few more times.

WOW!

Admittedly, I don't listen to a heck of a lot of growling music, so maybe there are plenty of female growlers out there.  I was, however, really quite impressed.  The thought of a female Opeth even ran through my mind during a couple of passages, but I'm no Opeth expert so that may be a completely worthless comparison.

If you'd like to check out Effloresce, the MP tribute looks like it's still available at https://www.spaceprog.com/

For a sampling of the growls, listen to "Sear" at 4:07 or "Sunset in the Snowdome" at 4:50.  I like the growling section in the first one better but the songs are about equal.  Right now they only have a 3 song EP available, but they're supposedly working on a full length release.  Not much by way of youtube, but here's their myspace for "Sunset" --

I didn't think it was the same person at first, but it is.  And I was amazed at how quickly she switched between the two and did it well.  Talking about "Sear" BTW.

Never heard Arch Enemy?
I was doing a little research after I made this topic and saw some bands like Arch Enemy and The Agonist.  I figured there were other female growlers out there; I just haven't really heard them.

Giving this thread a "1 more chance" bump since I originally made the thread at four in the morning, and maybe more people might view it now.  If not, it will die a reasonably quick death.

Thanks.

I'm a big fan of female growlers! Stolen Babies, The Agonist and Unexpect (a little bit) are good examples. I'll check these guys out! :tup

Major bump as I'd like to keep the Effloresce discussion within this thread rather than in my previous one about Generation Prog Records. :)

Effloresce have an album coming out on February 10th titled Coma Ghosts:
It was mixed and mastered by metal legend Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Opeth and many more).

1. Crib (8:12)
2. Spectre Pt. 1: Zorya’s Dawn (10:34)
3. Pavement Canvas (8:58 )
4. Undercoat (2:54)
5. Swimming through Deserts (7:11)
6. Shuteye Wanderer (16:31)

Sounds good, right? :D

Just checked it out. Sounds like a really great mix and master, music didn't grab me though. I liked the Metallica style chug riffs, but I didn't like the progressive aspects, and I wasn't sold on the female vocals.

Just comes down to personal preference though, not anything really wrong with it.

Hi everyone,

the wait is over, we've finally launched our little online store and we're already taking orders for the new Effloresce album! We're also offering their earlier EP and the Relocator CD:
https://www.generation-prog.com/?page_id=1172

Other than buying from the band directly, this is the only source for the exclusive special edition of Coma Ghosts:

Another nice feature for the impatient among you is that we're offering a free download of whichever CD you order - just drop us an e-mail after completing your order to request a download link!

Oh, and before I forget - here's the final episode of "The Making of Coma Ghosts" - enjoy! :)

Ordered my copy of the CD and got my digital download yesterday.  Been listening to it ever since.

HIGHLY recommended stuff, especially for fans of Opeth.  A couple of times I could have sworn I was listening to Opeth until the vocals came in.  And that's not to say that Effloresce is in any way an Opeth clone, because their music definitely has its own identity.  Being totally honest, I like this quite a bit more than the early Opeth albums, mostly because I'm really too far into the whole cookie monster vocal thing and it's used very sparingly here, which is a good thing, imho.

This one will definitely be staying in my CD player for a while.

3 spins into this one and what I think is this is the album that Opeth SHOULD HAVE made instead of Heritage.

If you're someone like me who misses the metal side of Opeth you owe it to yourself to check these guys out.

You can listen to the entire album on their bandcamp page. (https://effloresce.bandcamp.com/)

I'd suggest "for fans of DT, Opeth, female vox".

I will be posting a review of this excellent album sometime this weekend.

By the way, I think the vocals are great.  I usually don't like female vocalists in the lead vocalist role for an entire album, but there's something about Nicki's style that is just  :hefdaddy sublime

Hey Dave!  I was going to do the review this weekend, but I had a little distraction when someone rear-ended me and my wife on the highway Saturday night  :\    We're OK but my company car got smashed up pretty good.

I will definitely be posting a review soon.  I listened to this album again this morning at the gym, followed by your EP  :metal

I noticed when I played the "Shades of Fate" EP just after your album there is definitely an improvement in the production with the album.  Not that EP sounded bad or anything.  Quite the contrary.  I think it sounded fine.  But the album's production is sparkling.  I love the guitar tone and the drums sound monstrous.  Another thing I noticed on the album is the blast beats sound better/cleaner....more even.  When I listened on the headphones there's quite a bit of nuance in there too.  Overall a very impressive album.  There are some instrumental sections where I would swear I'm listening to Opeth and I don't mean that in a sense that you guys are an Opeth clone, I mean it as a compliment.

wow, what can i say...? Thanks for all the praise, Barry.
And yeah, we liked the sound of our EP, but of course wanted to improve on every level nevertheless and Dan Swanö really provided us with a Killer sound, very very capable and nice guy he is! Just amazing. And obviously people like the sound a lot, so apparently we made a good decision in hiring him for mixing and mastering duties.
Title: Re: Effloresce: Opeth-esque with female vocals
Post by: kirksnosehair on February 22, 2012, 09:02:34 AM
Yeah, you guys definitely made a good choice there.  The album sound awesome.  I'd put it up against any of my favorite productions any day.  I love that the mastering is not all fucking mashed up against the ceiling too.   Every instrument has plenty of room to breath and there's a depth and hugeness to the overall sound....I really picked up on it when listening on my iPod at the gym.  I've got some new Bose ear buds and those definitely helped.

Eh, it didn't really matter since I had the MP3s anyway.  I mean, I do want to check out the lyrics and the artwork, but the music is the main thing.  I rarely buy CDs any more.  Only from bands I really, really like, or want to keep collecting or friends like you guys.

Just listened to Shuteye Wanderer.

You found a new fan in me for sure.  Barry's endorsement makes it a certainty that I'll own this soon.  As much as I prefer owning the physical CD and I don't like going the digital route, with my amazon MP3 credits it would cost me less than $5 to get it there, but $20 to order the physical product, and I really need to tighten up my budget.  Any chance you might be able to get amazon to care the physical product and have it not cost so much?  (15 Euro for the CD & shipping is just over $20 US.  Sorry for being a cheapo, but my living situation is going to become very fluid in a few months.

Hey DTVT! Glad you dig our stuff, i appreciate that a lot!
And as i just learned finally LaserCD got their first shipment of Coma-Ghosts-CDs, so you'll be able to get a physical copy here: https://www.lasercd.com/Products/Effloresce---Coma-Ghosts__GENPRCD003.aspx
I guess that's the cheapest way for US-citizens to get a physical copy of our album. So yeah, your choice, sir. But i promise you the Booklet is worth the extra bucks, since you get all the lyrics and pretty much disturbing pictures which kinda "describe" every tune or at least give you a visual hint at what's going on... :)

not sure if it was guitarrero, but ive been checking out a band called Dark Suns as a result of some Effloresce member posting them in their top albums of the year note on facebook. some pretty good stuff on there.

also, i have been semi obsessed with Effloresce the past two weeks after checking em out. pretty awesome stuff, but i actually think i might prefer the EP (from the few samples i found) to the new album.
regardless, Coma Ghosts is what Heritage wishes it was.

woohoooo, Heritage is also one of my faves from 2011, probably THE FAVE, so i'd never ever would see my own bands' album anywhere close to the genius of Opeth.
But glad some people apparently do! Pretty weird actually...

As for Dark Suns: That is one of Tobi's faves (he's the drummer in Effloresce) from 2011. I personally only heard it once so far, but did enjoy it quite a lot, too! Orange is a very solid album even at first listen.

the first track is some damn catchy retro proggy pop stuff - hard not to be lured in.
i mean, its got nothing on effloresce  ;), but its a rather intriguing album.

Listening to the track Spectre Pt. I: Zorya's Dawn right now, sounds very good.  I'll have to check the rest of the album out.

If you're looking for another female fronted band influenced by Opeth (as well as classic Pain Of Salvation), definitely check out The Last Void's "State Of Mind" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ii8mmq_tVXk).  One of my favorite albums from 2010.  Strong vocals and musicianship throughout.

BUMP!

I'm just getting around to this album....(I only just got it a couple of weeks ago, and things have been hectic with all the new releases lately)

But I'm giving it The Jammin Dude "Five Spin Rule" this week, and WOW!   I almost hate it when I get SO MUCH GREAT music all at the same time, because it all seems like so much to process.    But this album is really amazing.   I'm on spin #2 at the moment, and was just motivated to hop on and rave about what I'm hearing.

I don't know if I quite get the "Opeth vibe" everyone else seems to be getting...but I'm definitely LOVING it.   I'm preparing for this to be the focus of the next Jammin Dude Show review.    I'll be getting it up this weekend.  (hmmm....that came out wrong)

I'm especially impressed with Nicki's transition from clean to harsh vocals....and I really appreciate that she doesn't overdo it.    Her choices of where to use it and not to use it is so tasteful.   Does she write her own vocal harmonies?  (i.e, where to sing clean and where not to....or does someone else decide?)    Whoever makes that call has excellent taste and instincts.

EDIT:  BTW....I'm on Swimming Through Deserts now and I changed my mind....I guess I hear a big Opeth vibe on this one...although I think a better comparison would be The Gathering.   Especially "How To Measure a Planet?" which is one of my all time favorite albums.

It is good, but Opeth is much better.

Oh wow! Almost forgot about this thread here... thanks for bringing it back to life jammindude !!! Looking forward to your video, mate!

As for that: Nicki does all of that stuff by herself! We usually write music and have some ideas where to put the voice, but she is always present anyway and making up her mind while we write songs. And then she comes up with the most unexpected things, really. She often prefers to sing over pretty weird and awkward parts and yeah, i would agree that her taste and instincts are pretty badass!  :tup
Just wait until you guys hear the stuff that we are working on right now!  :coolio

Don't get too excited, folks. It will still take a while. Quick insight: We're without a bass-player at the moment but have about half an album written so far. With tons of ideas still lurking around... hopefully we'll be able to record and release something in 2014 :) But what we have so far is pretty badass i might say. In fact we even have some sort of a teaser. As promised we published some snippets from a new tune as we reached 1.000 Likes on facebook a while ago, check it out:

Yeah, just a shitty rehearsal-room-video, but you get the idea... :)

They just posted a live video of Shuteye Wanderer that is really well done.

Nicki's transitions from clean to growling are just absolutely amazing.   Especially at the four minute mark.   I think the way she is able to go from one to the other so quickly without diminishing either one in a live setting is really impressive.

Thanks for sharing, dude! :) That one has been recorded at our recent adventure called "first gig abroad". We rocked in the Netherlands with Ex Libris and they not only invited us to play there, but also kinda borrowed us their bass-player Peter who - as you easily can tell - did an outstanding job! Boy, had we fun that night...  :heart

Long time no see, trusty little thread. :) For those who are interested, there are some news:

News songs are coming along nicely and we are in pre-production-mode right now, defining the last tiny bits and tweaking details here and there. So expect a new record definitely some time next year!

In the meantime feel free to enjoy footage of a full show we played in june, kindly provided by a fan:

Even more good news from camp Effloresce: We finally have a new bassplayer for a while now and played the first show with him on board last friday. Check out some photos over here: https://www.effloresceonline.com/?page_id=2963

And yeah: Songwriting for the album is like 95% done. Exciting times!
