Title: Marvellous G's Song Roulette - Round 8 Resuuuuults!
Post by: Marvellous G on January 05, 2011, 06:02:47 AM
Right, after Orcus had this awesome idea, time for yet another.  :lol

My contestants are:

Fluffy Lothario
Portucci
antigoon
Sonatafanica
kári
Gorille85
Kingshmegland
DTVT
zxlkho
Space Invader

I'm gonna do 8 rounds, and my scoring system is gonna be my favourite gets 6 points, my second favourite 5, then my 3rd and 4th favourite both get 4 each, my 5th and 6th both get 3, my 7th and 8th both 2, and my two least favourites get 1 point each. I hope this way it won't leave one person miles in the lead and basically uncatchable, so it should be a close game until the end.

Here's my LastFM for a fairly comprehensive reference list of what I have and haven't heard, and in the unlikely event you send me a song I've heard that isn't on there I'll just message you back: https://www.last.fm/user/MarvellousG

For a little more info on my taste, I guess what I'm on the lookout for more now is more experimental stuff, but anything slightly funky, jazzy or electronic appeals to me instantly, even better if it's one of those things combined with another genre. I'm not really a huge fan of growls or screaming, but if you think they're used in an effective way, like I'd say Opeth's are, then I'd be fine with giving them a try. I'm not gonna be that pretentious douche who says 'I listen to EVERYTHING' and then laughs snidely at you, but to be honest as long as you justify your choice with why you like it and I might, anything goes here. Heck, even country.

Other than that, I'll have Round 1 as an open round so you can all get a feel for my taste before we get into proper categories, and let's just say the deadline is midnight on Saturday so people get a chance to read this and respond. As for song length in this whole thing, I'm not gonna put a cap or anything, but please try and keep the 15 minute opuses to a minimum for my sake.  :lol

I'm glad you like it. But I still would like to send you some curveballs because to me, the best part of thus game is finding songs or bands I've never heard of.  I'm all about finding new music.

Yeah I suppose what I wanted with this open round was just to sort of set the standard for the kind of stuff I like, and from then on it should be easier to make more calculated keeerrrr-azy choices.

Yeah, I have twenty something songs in my head I would consider sending, but I don't really know what you'd like so I just picked something I really like while looking at your Last.FM. It'll be easier the next fex rounds because then I'll have an idea which stuff you really like "discovering". You know? :D

I'm just putting it as that in case people don't see it in time, but I'll move it forward to basically as soon as I get all the songs in if possible.

The song I REALLY want to send sounds like crap on youtube and isn't on grooveshark.  I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like it though, as it doesn't seem to be up your alley.

I'm going to send you a song from an album I bought on nothing but some record store dude's opinion, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.  No idea what you'll think of it honestly, but since you want stuff that isn't exactly up my alley, I'm going to have be creative.

I do have all the writeups written for stuff now (other than possibly a few edits upon my final listens before I post the results) so once Goon gets his in it should be pretty speedy seeing the results. Not saying that to single out Goon, I'm just saying don't worry about it taking any longer afterwards.  :tup

I'm fine with whatever you guys want to do. I can always just judge Goon's song retroactively and award him the points he would have been given anyway, so it's no biggie if he misses the results this time as he won't be disadvantaged. Also,

Yeah maybe he can pick a song. :lol

Damn, I was looking forward to Goon's picks.  :-\ But waiting till the 15th would lose quite a few rounds' worth at the rate you guys are sending them. I don't mind, but what seems like the best thing to do now is just to go on without him, then when he comes back if he wants he can just jump right in and send me the 3 or so songs he'll have missed, or he can just opt out if he doesn't want. Is that fair to him though? If so, results are ready NAO.

Yeah just skip him for now and see what he thinks about it when he gets back.

Okay, here we go, hopefully Goon will still join after though:

Round 1 – Open Round

1st Place – 6 Points
Kingshmegland                               Soft Bomb Salad                             I Mother Earth

What a cool song! It’s instantly pretty funky with a cool bassline that would be right at home at the beginning of a funk jam session instead of the alternative rock it anchors here. The guitar work in this track is also excellent and really evocative; it’s used sparingly and tastefully throughout purely to complement the atmosphere, which is really nice to hear. As you said, the singer immediately reminded me of Maynard’s work in Tool. The first half feels like it’s building up to something big, it’s very creepy, and when the song does go heavy in the second half it still manages to retain that funky vibe with the cool riff the guitar does backed up by some nice synth stuff. A fantastic guitar solo follows, then the song goes all creepy and funky again before moving to a brilliant outro that is basically a perfect conclusion to the song. Awesome stuff Shmeg, I’ll definitely be checking this band out afterwards! The similarity to Tool here might have made this a slightly comfort-zone song for me so I feel kind of bad for putting it THIS high, but it was just so damn good that I actually preferred it to some songs by my FAVOURITE band, so still a great pick.

2nd Place – 5 Points
Sonatafanica                          Thank You Too!           My Morning Jacket

Wow, very relaxing, and as it was the first song I listened to after my first and incredibly tiring day back at school this was really what I needed. The production stood out to me first, it just sounds really clean, and there’s some really lush instrumentation going on in the background with the strings complementing the vocals really nicely, all the layering is to great effect. I really liked the vocals, and the lyrics were also really nice and funny at points. The thing I picked up on after a few listens was how nicely the Rhodes piano (I think it is?) in the verses in the gaps between the singing works. I’m also gonna have to learn this on guitar, the rhythm stuff here is so soothing. Overall there’s not too much to say about this as it’s a fairly straightforward song, but everything that was there was excellent. And my God, that chorus is, for lack of a more hetero term, lovely. Last minute edit: after reading some of the shouts for this song on LastFM, I do sort of see what people mean when they say it’s slightly cheesy, but I think that adds to it if anything, and the people who insulted the strings are terrible human beings.

3rd Place – 4 Points
Fluffy Lothario                   Acknowledgement    Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin

Having heard the original A Love Supreme only a few times, I had a nice sort of recollection of this track on a very, very basic level. After the brilliant first few seconds which had me on completely the wrong foot for a moment, the track calms down into a really nice groove. What you mentioned about them paying tribute to Coltrane’s portrayal of spirituality through music really comes through here, and whilst the soloing is incredible and obviously the focus, the rhythm section creates a really nice backdrop that manages to mix Santana’s salsa style with the original’s jazziness. (Last Minute Edit: Larry Young, who I’ve just discovered as the organist thanks to the magic of Wikipedia, is actually subtly incredible here. I didn’t even really notice him on my first few listens, but he’s CONSTANTLY doing crazy and awesome stuff in the background here, which solves my internal question of how the sound managed to be so full when it was essentially a solo trading session. He’s just always doing amazing stuff that would probably be a great song just on it’s own!)  The solos have several brilliant peaks and Santana and McLaughlin really work superbly together. Overall this was a really nice interpretation, and a very, very good first pick that means I'll definitely be checking out Love Devotion Surrender after this roulette's done.

4th Place – 4 Points
Zxlkho                        Acronym Love                      Riverside

This is a band that I’ve heard countless good things about, but for some reason I’ve never gotten round to checking them out. This song will definitely finally motivate me to do so! The opening is almost jazzy and very mellow, and the guy’s voice is a little odd at first but once I got used to it, it was really nice and suited the song well. The solos are, as you say, epic, unbelievably so, and I love how the song swells and then calms back down again a few times. The leads throughout are awesome, and the guy’s tone is fantastic as well. The ending really took it to another level, with the guitar solo and piano both reaching awesome heights that calmed down perfectly. I actually think it was the outro that placed this above the song just below it, it's just unbelievably epic sounding and I still don't understand how they pull off the tempo change without me noticing it or it being jarring. Great track, I’ll definitely be sure to check this band out now.

5th Place – 3 Points
Gorille85        Summoning Scenes                    Unexpect

I was wondering when Gorille’s Unexpect pick would come.  :lol I’ll start off by saying that out of all the picks this one easily required the most listens before I felt ‘qualified’ to do the writeup for it. Soooo, a LOT of stuff going on here. I’ve heard a lot about Unexpect and how batshit insane their music is (in a good way) and this seemed like a great headfirst dive into their music. It’s INCREDIBLY abrasive, and remained so after like my first five listens. After that it started to make more sense, and I slowly began to love the vocal tradeoffs between the two singers, it worked really well. The music in the first half was breakneck and jumped around a lot, but, again, after a few listens, managed to feel far more cohesive than it did at first. There were some awesome thrash riffs buried in there also, and some of the violin leads I was hearing made me alternately lol and headbang. After the general insanity-turned-into-genius of the first 3 and a half minutes, it kicks into some 80s metal harmonies which were totally unexpected but also very cool, and after that there was a section that I’m gonna noobily say reminded me a LOT of Opeth. I’ll stop just listing the song structure now, and just say that despite my initial ‘WTF.’ reaction, this really grew on me and I really enjoy it now. I’d be very interested in hearing more of these guys, but I can’t imagine how long a whole album would take to start making any kind of sense. Still, a very very cool and incredibly composed, but very very initially confusing song.

6th Place – 3 Points
Space Invader                 The Sun In My Eyes               The Tangent

Probably the most instantly appealing song on this list, this is funky as hell and, as Space Invader said in his message, just plain fun. Again, the instrumentation here was excellent, and the chorus is so catchy and cheesy in a really great way, and the groove in the verses is so infectious that I can’t help but tap my foot along to it every time. The keyboard solo in the middle is also the kind of thing I wish Rudess did more often in DT now, it’s very over the top but in a sort of knowing way, and it fits the song so well. The lyrics in this song are also awesome in, again, a knowingly cheesy way. My only mild complaint is that I’m not a huge fan of the singer’s voice in the verses, but it suits the chorus so well that that complaint is completely erased by the amazing outro with even more awesome keyboard and guitar work. My only complaint is that it’s a little short, but that’s mainly due to me wanting more than the song being at fault. OH MY GOD the chorus is still stuck in my head as I post this, but I’m not complaining.

7th Place – 2 Points
Kári                                 What Else Is There?             Royksopp

This was also very, very cool. What struck me after my first listen of the song was how subtly and effectively the strings were used in the second half, they really added to the late night sort of atmosphere that the song got across to me. The last minute or so was also a very nice cooldown, even though the final few seconds CREEPED ME OUT when I listened late at night. Sonata might hate me for this as I’m a Bjork noob, but the vocals did remind me of what very little Bjork I’ve heard in a way, and they worked really well in the song. All of the effects that seem to be being used just below the surface of the track really help to create a mental picture as well, it’s so atmospheric and I love that about it. This was a great trip hop track overall, very atmospheric, so great pick!

8th Place – 2 Points
DTVT                         Guilt And The Like                     Mouth of The Architect

Ooh, very creepy feel, but in a good way. As you said the vocals aren’t really to my taste now, but after a few listens they sort of grew on me to the point where they didn’t make the song any worse at all. And they do fit. The music is awesome, kind of has a circus feel to it which works really well, and then the absolute heaviness that kicks in the middle has all the more impact. The vocals really suited the song perfectly in the second half, and I don’t even normally notice drums especially, but the drums in the ‘UNTIL THE EEEEND!’ bit went crazy, it was awesome. When it speeds up at around the 4 minute mark I also can’t help but headbang slightly, it’s such a metal moment. The outro felt like the silence after being shellshocked or something, it worked really well and ended on the sort of underlyingly creepy feel that the whole song had. Admittedly the vocals turned me off a bit, but this was still a good track.

9th Place – 1 Point
Portucci                     Paul Panzers Blues            Ton Steine Scherben

Wow, how the hell did this song end up finishing last? You guys have sent me some amazing stuff this round already, as I still really, really enjoyed this song! First off, I’d just like to get it out of the way that foreign music isn’t annoying to me at all, so people please feel free to send me songs of any language if you want. Right, this song was pretty damn cool, it was nothing extraordinary, but what it did, it did really well. I actually really like the guy’s voice, it complemented the grooviness of the instruments in an unexpected way that really worked for me. Plus, epic harmonica soloing throughout! Overall I did enjoy this a whole lot, it was a great song and I feel bad for scoring it this low, but it wasn’t as surprisingly good as some other stuff this round. I know you’ll be able to send me some mindblowing stuff as well though, so I wouldn’t worry here.

I would like to stress again that the bottom 3 tracks were all actually awesome, so I don't know what advice to give, you all blew my mind with amazing picks this round.  :lol

For Round 2, the category is 'emotional songs.' Whether you interpret that as a singer songwriter pouring their heart out alone with their guitar, or a massively overproduced ballad with an entire orchestra backing the band, or even a Comfortably Numb ripoff is up to you, as long as you justify why you think it's so emotional to you in your description. Good luck everyone, hopefully at least some of you will send terrible songs this time to make it easier for me.  :lol

I actually considered mentioning the keyboardist, but figured I'd keep quiet about him and see if you spotted him. He's exactly what they needed, he creatively builds a foundation for Santana and McLaughlin to work on. His subdued solo towards the end is great too, as good as any of the guitar solos in the song.

I think I know what I'm going to send. May sit on it overnight though.

It's still so relaxing, it's the first song that I actually put on my iPod to listen to when I go out of all the submissions so far.  :D

A bit this time; there's one clear winner so far, but after that it's impossible to separate the rest, there's no obvious bad one. Which is awesome, but difficult.  :lol

Round 2 – Emotional Songs

1st Place – 6 Points

Fluffy Lothario
Rob Dougan – One And The Same (Instrumental)

My reaction when I first heard this:  :omg: and  :'( and  :hefdaddy all at the same time.

While it’s interesting that most of the other picks here went for songs where the lyrics were really the focus of the emotional stuff, Fluffy chose to go the opposite route and recommended this instrumental version. He also recommended that I listen with headphones first time round, which I did, and good lord. This was the closest any song this round came to bringing me to tears, but instead of the emotion just being like ‘wow, I can feel their pain,’ this was just sort of everything all at once; it was, as Fluffy said in his description, a nigh-on religious experience. I don’t really want to say too much about it, as there’s nothing structurally or instrumentally I could actually specifically pick on as making it as moving as I found it, but basically every single thing in the song is EXACTLY as it should be, and I wouldn’t change anything in it, which is something I can say for very, very few songs. As soon as I heard this I jumped to find a download for it, but then I thought that I might actually want to savour this and not listen too much, as it’s seriously the most emotion a song’s inspired in me in a very, very long time. Magnificent track.

2nd Place – 5 Points
Kari
Bon Iver – Re: Stacks

Weirdly, I actually really loved Justin Vernon’s voice here on first listen, which I wouldn’t expect as I normally take a while to get used to this kind of singing. The main word I’d use to describe this song is ‘haunting,’ the sparse instrumentation really works well to complement the (almost for me, and certainly for Vernon) heartbreaking lyrics. That guitar backing doesn’t get boring somehow, despite going on throughout the whole song, and by the end I was left sort of speechless. It really feels like Bon Iver poured their collective soul into this, and the final line really rammed home how emotional this was, in fact the entire last verse is wonderfully written. By the end I thought ‘this MUST be the album closer,’ and now thanks to Wikipedia I know it is, it really must be one of the most powerful closers of all time after listening to the whole album, which I now intend to do on the strength of this track. ‘This is not the sound of a new man, or a crispy realization,’ has got to be one of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard.

3rd Place – 4 Points
Gorille85
O+S – New Life

The production in this really is, as Gorille said in his message, incredible. Everything is perfectly balanced so you really hear everything that’s going on in the track with perfect clarity. Her voice does really sound desperate here, and it’s a weird kind of emotional song but a very good one. It’s like she’s trying to restrain her emotions, but you can still definitely feel them coming through. The background sounds in the second verse, and then throughout the song from then on, are amazing and paint a really nice visual picture in my head. The lyrics are also really good here, and she sounds more and more desperate and defeatist as the song goes on until the very end where you’re actually worried she might have committed suicide or something. :lol Not much to say about this, except that it was a very cool trip hip song, and a great pick for this round.

4th Place – 4 Points
Portucci
Forseti – Letzter Traum
As soon as this guy starts to sing, you can tell you’re gonna be in for a depressing ride. :lol The way he sings, despite the language barrier, gets across the sort of emotions that lyrics wouldn’t be able to express anywhere near as well. The instrumentation also adds to this depressing feel, with the flutes and stuff all giving the song a sort of ethereal atmosphere. What makes this all the more impressive is the fact, which Portucci told me in the description, that this guy is playing all the instruments himself, which I find amazing as all of them are so perfectly and understatedly used. Even when the tempo of the song picks up, it still sounds very dirge like, but without the ‘boring’ connotations that the term usually brings with it in music. The outro sounds almost hopeful, but the whole song just evokes depression so strongly that you can’t help but feel kind of drained by the end. A very emotional song, and a very good one too.

5th Place - 3 Points
Space Invader
The Pineapple Thief – My Debt To You

Wow, I’ve heard some TPT before but the singer’s voice never stood out to me as much as it did here, the singing is perfect for the lyrics and he’s got a really strong voice. Plus, the harmonies are perfectly done, ie not too many layers and not too few.The lyrics here are pretty good and nice, but not amazing or anything, which is okay, as the music is so good. The production is really good, specifically the really slight reverb/echo on his voice that I might just be tricking myself into hearing. There’s some great guitar work here that is weirdly depressing, and the final seconds of the song with the second-long entrance of the strings are really nicely done. This reminded me a bit of a cross between Radiohead and Porcupine Tree, which wasn’t a bad thing by any means. Good song, and one that will remind me to check out the rest of their discography I haven’t heard yet.

6th Place – 3 Points
Kingshmegland
Toto – I Will Remember

WOW, this song was immediately very powerful even before the lyrics had begun. I’ve always (guiltily? Possibly.) enjoyed every Toto song I’ve heard immensely, and this was no exception. The production is always awesome with Toto, and this was up to PT standards as soon as the drums kicked in. The lyrics are a bit cheesy, but based on what the band must have been going through at the time, I can’t really level that criticism, as they really do seem to be coming straight from the heart. When it kicks into the (pre?)chorus for the first time around 2 minutes in, I was blown away. The song is really emotional, but instead of just being so in a depressing way, it sounded more like a positive kind of sadness, which I needed after the emotional drain that a lot of the other submissions this round imposed on me :lol I think my favourite thing about this track took a while to realise and, much like Fluffy’s pick last round, it was the piano. The fills and stuff it does in the verses and the chorus really add to the sound of the song, and the intensity. This was another fairly long song (for it’s genre, at least) that went by in what felt like seconds, and every time I reach the 5 minute mark and THAT outro starts again it’s just so powerful. The ‘woahs’ or ‘oohs’ or whatever they are might not be to everyone’s taste, but I thought they worked excellently. I also love how the outro kind of mirrors the intro, and it’s cool how essentially the same thing can make such a good intro and outro. In short, Toto ftw.

7th Place – 2 Points
Sonatafanica
Bright Eyes - Easy/Lucky/Free

This was another pick that had great lyrics. What’s interesting is that I thought that 5 plus minutes sounded like a tough ask for a sinsger songwriter to keep me occupied, but when it reached the end I thought there were loads more verses left, it went by really quickly, which is definitely because I was so absorbed in the lyrics. I loved Oberst’s delivery, it really drove home the kind of attitude the song was condemning in a way that would have been funny were it not for how depressingly true and relevant it all was. My favourite lines were easily the ‘I never really dreamed of heaven much, Until we put him in the ground,’ couplet, it was so powerful the first time I heard it that coloured the whole song with the kind of morbid happiness that the music reflected really well, too. I’d already heard ‘I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning,’ before this but I’ll definitely have to check out their/his other work now, even though it’ll make me hate the world even more than I do now after hearing this.  :lol

8th Place – 2 Points
Zxlkho
Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot

Looking at the other song titles on this album had me a bit worried about how emo this was going to be. :lol But this track wasn’t the genero-emo I’d been expecting, despite how crushingly sad it was. I followed along with the lyrics each time like you suggested, and they really are very well written, especially for this genre. By the time it got to ‘Standing trial for your sins, Holding onto yourself the best you can, You are the smell before the rain, You are the blood in my veins,’ it was almost unbearable, and the harmonies they had going on at this point really added to it. The guitar work here was also understated but I really liked it, and the numerous pauses they had between lines and stuff was also really interesting and added to the ‘depressed-stream-of-consciousness’ type vibe that I was getting. I’ll check out the albums you mentioned based on this track, it was pretty impressive.

9th Place – 1 Point
Jamesman
Disciple – One More Time

So, I’ll admit that, being an agnostic, I was a bit sceptical when Jamesman told me that this was a blatant praise song. HOWEVER, I went into this with as open a mind as possible, and I was not let down. I don’t need to agree with the lyrics whatsoever to see, when watching the video James linked me to, that this guy is just so into what he’s singing that I can’t help but be moved slightly, and the song is, while a little cheesy, really powerful. The chorus is, for lack of a less overused word, epic, and the vocals are just so emotional that I immediately get into the song every time I listen. The guitar parts are also great; I’ll have to give those a go sometime soon. But basically, despite me not being religious at all, this was a really great and emotional track that wasn’t hindered at all by its subject matter. My only problem would be that I do find it very cheesy, but I guess that’s the tradeoff you have to do when you make something as emotional as this. Cool pick.

10th Place – 1 Point
DTVT
Enchant – Pure

This was a nicely emotional song. The guitar work was what stood out to me here the most by far, with some great solos throughout the song. On repeated listens it keeps surprising me how well it transitions from the quiet and understated opening, to the crazy guitar theatrics and general ‘epicness’ of the second half. The lyrics here were also a bit cheesy, but I didn’t mind too much as it sort of fit the song nicely. That guitar at the beginning is also weirdly catchy, I’m gonna have to learn that and annoy my family with it for hours straight. :lol My only problem was that the guy’s voice wasn’t really to my tastes, which dragged the song down a bit. But yeah, not too much to say here, just a really nice song that was actually happily emotional, with some great electric and acoustic guitar work and really nice lyrics. It was good, but all of the picks this round were, once again, really enjoyable, so something has to come last.

Fluffy Lothario – 10 Points
Kingshmegland – 9 Points
Sonatafanica – 7 Points
Gorille85 – 7 Points
Kari – 7 Points
Zxlkho – 6 Points
Space Invader – 6 Points
Portucci – 5 Points
DTVT – 3 Points
Jamesman – 1 Point, although he missed the first round (feel free to send me a song for the open round and I’ll just give it a score based on roughly where I’d have put it if you want)

Round 3’s category: Late night songs. This will understandably be pretty subjective, but some examples of my favourite late night songs are this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEeuetOsxKg&feature=related

This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2mJpQSkae8

And this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s-OafVVG5U

So basically, just say why it suits late nights for you if it’s not obvious, and even if I don’t agree I won’t necessarily mark the song down anyway.

I've downloaded Fluffy's pick and put it on my iPod so I can listen to it before I go to sleep. I'm actually really curious. While heartbreaking lyrics can go a long way, when done correctly, nothing beats the raw emotion of just music.

I actually had to pick away some tears the first time I heard the Bon Iver song I sent you. I thought it had to do with the fact that it was during a very emotional House M.D. episode, but after listening to the full album, and then hearing that final track... It never fails to get to me. As you said, the last verse is just... I don't know. It really gets to you.

Scanning through my library for possible "late night songs" now!

:tup One and the Same would count very highly amongst my favourite songs. And just like the Bon Iver track, it's actually the album closer, and all the more powerful because the entire album is quite dissimilar to it. Furious Angels is very dark, with perhaps no lighter moments until that final track, which, for all the sad tone to it, is very uplifting at the same time. Despite the whole album being very good, it still hits you like a breath of fresh air.

Also, if you want to hear another dimension to the song, check out the version with vocals. I don't like it anywhere near as much, as not only is Rob Dougan not a great singer, but his vocals are waaaaaay too far forward in the mix and largely drown out the music, but it's still an interesting listen.

I have some ideas for a late night track. I'll probably listen to them as I go to sleep tonight and hand one over in the morning. I have a song which I know is ideal, but it's another instrumental, and I think I'll avoid instrumentals for a few rounds now.  :lol

The idea of "late night music" does not compute, except for maybe cheesy lounge music when you're drunk and trying to find an even drunker girl to hook up with.

Actually, that's what you are going to get.  You don't like harsh vocals, that's not everyone's cup of tea...you don't like Ted Leonard, that's just absurd; so now you are going to get absurd "late night music".

EDIT:  Crap, I can't find "Wicked Lounge" by Royal Hunt...it's probably the shittiest song by a decent band.  I have no idea why they stuck a piece of lounge music in the middle of one of their albums (other than Eyewitness was crap bag to begin with).

Had time to listen to Jamesman's retroactive Round 1 pick today so here's a quick writeup:

5 Points
Jamesman
Future of Forestry - "Slow Your Breath Down"

I don't think it would have been fair to give this as many points as Shemg's first place pick in the first round, but this is definitely up there in quality. It reminded me of so many different artists, like Brandon Flowers, Arcade Fire and even some Bruce in there somewhere, but they managed to make their own amazing sound out of it. James' suggestion to watch them performing it live instead of listening to the studio version was also a great one, as judging by the sound I'd have guessed on the band being an 8 piece or something, so I was amazed when it was 3.  :lol Really nice melodies, harmonies, instrumentation and lyrics, and an all round great song from a band that has now sped to very near the top of my 'to check out' list. Awesome song.  :tup (technically the 5 point slot has already been filled, but judging by the circumstances and the fact that James had to think of this and his round 3 pick at the same time, I think this is fair to him, as the song really is that good too)

So now I guess it stands as:

Fluffy Lothario – 10 Points
Kingshmegland – 9 Points
Sonatafanica – 7 Points
Gorille85 – 7 Points
Kari – 7 Points
Jamesman - 6 Points
Zxlkho – 6 Points
Space Invader – 6 Points
Portucci – 5 Points
DTVT – 3 Points

Round 3 – Late Night Songs

1st Place – 6 Points

Gorille85
Caravan Palace – Ended With The Night

I have a feeling some people here might listen to this song and hate on it, but I LOVED it. From the second the strings kicked in at the start, I just knew it was perfect for what I meant in this round. The instrumentation just screams ‘late night in a European city’ to me, and the rain sound effects in the background are like the chillout opposite of Tool’s 10,000 Days. :lol I’ll admit, the vocals did give me a bit of a ‘WTF.’ Reaction at first, but they quickly grew on me even before the end of my first listen. On repeated plays, they’re perfect for the song. The solos were also brilliant, and only added to the incredibly rich atmosphere and mental images that this song managed to conjure up for me. As Gorille said, ‘this song is pretty much the definition of a late night song.’ I’d have to agree.

2nd Place – 5 Points
Space Invader
Black is the Colour of My True Love's Heart - Neverending White Lights

Wow, this might even have challenged Fluffy’s pick last round. :lol But, as you say, it works awesomely here too. After I got over the mindblowing similarity the female singer’s voice has to Zooey Deschanel’s, I was able to just zone out to the world and sink into this song, which resulted in a depressing but AMAZING experience. Judging by how little I could find out about this guy online, this seems to be a moderately low budget song, but the production just screams the opposite. That piano riff is the perfect backdrop to the fantastic vocals, whichever singer it is. The climax they reach together at the end (haha sex) is just amazing, and, luckily, this song fits into the late night category awesomely as well, so I can place this as highly as it deserves. Awesome awesome song, and 3:30 ranks as one of the best ‘momens’ in any of the tracks I’ve been sent in this roulette so far. But seriously, HOW is that not Zooey Deschanel singing?

3rd Place – 4 Points
Portucci
H.U.V.A Network - Rain Geometries

This song is certainly on the darker side of late night music, which is by no means a bad thing. It’s creepy, but probably one of the deepest songs instrumentally that I received this round. There’s just so much stuff going on here that it’s taken me multiple listens to hear some of the subtleties, and I’m sure I’m only scratching the surface as it is. The use of acoustic guitar in this kind of music is also really inventive, but equally effective, and it created an atmosphere quite unlike the other choices this round, while still retaining the feel of music best enjoyed in the wee small hours. I’m definitely interested in getting this band’s discography now, as long as Rainymood is playing in the background while I listen. :lol

4th Place – 4 Points
Fluffy Lothario
Bic Runga – Ruby Nights

This is one of those songs where the vocals, the piano, the drums (the drums! They’re amazing here) and the occasional guitar are all used just enough to be in perfect counterpoint to each other, but never approach being overused or becoming boring. Awesomely produced, nice chill lyrics, and a wonderful voice to carry the song. The breaks they have at some points during the verse, and the sparse section that hits in the middle of the song, are all judged excellently, and, as Fluffy said, you really get a more spatial feel from this song than you do from a lot of others. A keeper for the late night playlist.

5th Place – 3 Points
Kari
Talk Talk – I Believe In You

An awesome late night song in every way basically, very chill and well produced. The vocals were really nice and relaxing and fit the mood perfectly. The song progresses into being basically a really vivid soundscape, and it’s perfect for the category this round. The outro with the ‘spirit’s was really ethereal and ambient-sounding, but it’s like the great bits of ambient combined with more traditional music, which made for a really relaxing track, and a new favourite for my late night playlist.

6th Place – 3 Points
Jamesman
Dustin Kensrue – Blanket Of Ghosts

This immediately stands out as the kind of late night style track I was looking for! The song’s pace is gentle and relaxing, and Dustin’s voice is just as good here as it is in his best moments in Thrice, perhaps even better, and I might have dismissed him as not being the right guy for this kind of song if I hadn’t witnessed the evidence to the contrary. The organ really stands out to me in this song, creating a sort of Gospel style vibe that just makes the song more suited to very early morning listens. The solo and licks the guitar provide throughout are also really mellow, and definitely evoke the SRV style vibe I mentioned in my examples. Great song, and one that I’ll be listening to for many insomnia-ridden nights to come!

7th Place -2 Points
Zxlkho
Anathema – A Beautiful Disaster

You shouldn’t have been worried about being unsure what I was asking for here, as this is definitely the kind of thing I was looking for! :tup I was taken aback by the female vocals, having only heard ‘We’re Here Because We’re Here’ by Anathema before this, but they were excellent. This song swings along at a slow pace, but it never feels boring at all, and whoever’s singing really carries the music well. Not that the music needs carrying; that riff is hypnotic, and the production was great, and the fact that I didn’t notice a difference to their SW-produced recent album shows just how good the production is. Great pick, and a song that just encourages me to delve further into Anathema’s catalogue.

8th Place – 2 Points
DTVT
Follow Me To Sleep

There was a dilemma I faced when scoring this song. On the one hand, it was really good, but on the other, it was probably the least ‘late night’ style song I got sent, but as DTVT didn’t get the category I though it was better to let that go. I’ve, amazingly, never actually gotten round to listening to any Spock’s Beard before, so this was quite an enlightening song to get this round. It was definitely very cool, with awesome keyboard work being the main thing I noticed in the first half of the song. The second half is lead by some ‘rockin’’ classic style guitar, which had some nice unison style stuff with the keys, that didn’t get to the overbearing level of some of DT’s unisons. And DAT keyboard solo was great too. So a great song, but one that I feel I can’t quite give all the credit it deserves this round simply due to the category.

9th Place – 1 Point
Kingshmegland
Da Da – Bob The Drummer

The first thing that struck me about this song was the guy’s voice. I’ll probably get hated on by DTVT for liking this guy and not the Enchant singer, but something about this guy’s voice was just instantly really appealing. The drumbeat is really hypnotic, and I completely see where you’re coming from by saying this is a late night song. The only thing that drags it down for me a tiny bit is how the calm/quiet verses transition pretty suddenly into the rockier chorus. But other than that, this was really nice and relaxing, with some neat layering by the keyboards which took me a while to notice to top it off. And yeah, the lyrics were cheesy, but, as you say, in a good way, they fit the mood nicely.

10th Place – 1 Point
Sonatafanica
Built To Spill – Kicked It In The Sun

The major stumbling block for me with this song was that I didn’t really like the singer’s voice at all. The instrumentation was very nice and mellow though, and the licks the electric did over some of the verses were so relaxing. The rhythm work here was also great, and the song built up well and kept me entertained for its considerable length for the genre, which is no mean feat. Not an especially ‘late night’ song for me, but it is pretty mellow so I can definitely see how this would be a good midnight listen. My only minor problem with the music itself was that the tempo change around 5 minutes in was a bit jarring when I first heard it. Other than that, this was pretty good. If only I liked the guy’s voice!

Fluffy Lothario – 14 Points
Gorille85 – 13 Points
Space Invader – 11 Points
Kingshmegland – 10 Points
Kari – 10 Points
Portucci – 9 Points
Jamesman - 9 Points
Zxlkho – 8 Points
Sonatafanica – 7 Points
DTVT – 5 Points

Holy crap, this scoring system's hard. The way I do this is I do all the writeups in Word one by one, so without really considering the positions, and then when it finally comes to the time for scoring I realise that some AMAZING songs with glowing writeups have to be placed low because everyone is sending in such good stuff, so for the lower down people, the stuff you're sending is still amazing, it's just that with everything being amazing this round something has to come lower down. Specifically this round I was ready to put Jamesman's at number 1 or 2 when I first heard it, but then other stuff just ended up edging it when it came to scoring. Still, thanks to all of you for making this roulette have a ridiculously consistent level of quality so far, even if it makes it impossible to score.  :lol

For the next round, I figured we'd have a comparatively simple Open Round, as this category seemed to cause some people problems whilst others knew exactly what I meant, which made it kind of unfair on the people that didn't. So, send away!

You can always just do rounds that aren't entirely open but are more so. For example you can do recent music, or cover songs, or just a very broad requirement that could encompass a lot of different stuff. :)

Anyway you're getting through this pretty quickly, catching up with me!

So G, the more rocking bridge threw you off a bit.  Oh well.  You are right by saying the drum beat is very hypnotic and I love how durring the build up at the end of the song there is two drum parts. One on the ride on the off beats.

The was 2 singers singing lead on the song and they share the harmonies together.

Oh my God, terrible slip there  :lol I blame it on my sister blaring emo music as I typed it. And yeah Ariich, I might try and do that kind of thing towards the end as people don't seem to like way more focussed categories as much, so that'd be a good compromise.

Sent! Took a blind shot there, it'll be hit or miss. But I reckon the point is to expose you to as much different kinds of music as possible. And you said you wanted some experimental stuff so there. Well, it's not really experimental... it's just different. :D

YES! I knew you would love that song. I highly recommend you check out the entire album, as in its entirety it is a dark and beautiful voyage through the depressing yet utterly mystical and powerful.

Oh, and the singer is Lexi Valentine. Incidentally, Daniel Victor (the artist behind the band) is one of the best independent music producers I've ever heard. So, yeah, check the album out, it's awesome.

Right, sorry for the delay and slightly shorter writeups this time, but the whole 'back to school, let's set tons of work!' ethic from the teachers has kicked in, but still, I'll try and remain prompt from now on. Still, here we go, some very interesting picks/results this time:

1st Place – 6 Points
Jamesman
Cloudkicker - Genesis Device

I knew this was gonna be the song to beat this round as soon as I finished my first listen, despite feeling basically shellshocked. I’m a bit of a wimp in my music tastes, so normally I wouldn’t go for stuff quite this heavy, but it was just, for lack of a better phrase, balls to the wall heavy from the get go in an amazing way that basically felt like getting pummelled in the head repeatedly. :lol I can’t wait to hear more of this artist now, although I feel I’ll have to take breaks between each track as I was basically breathless after this. I love how there are occasional breaks of like half a second where you just have time to think ‘is this it?’ before it just goes WHAM and into another amazing riff/section. To sum up my feelings on this, I’ll quote the commenter on the vid Jamesman linked me to, ErikMcLennan: ‘What a fucking epic way to start an album!’

2nd Place - 5 Points
Kari
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey
I was one of ‘those people’ that still didn’t really know what the hell shoegaze was, but I guess after hearing this track I do. And I love it. Kari’s detailed message really helped me in terms of enjoying this track the way it was meant to, and after trying it through speakers loudly as he suggested I was blown away. I then tried it with headphones just out of curiosity and it lost a lot of the effect, so there you go. :lol I do remember thinking ‘I have to get this song!’ at the end of Lost In Translation, but I guess I never did, and I’m so glad that Kari sent this so I can finally start getting into some shoegaze. The female vocals at the end are also just perfect. Awesome awesome track.

3rd Place – 4 Points
Kingshmegland
Umphrey's McGee – Cemetery Walk

Well this was epic. The intro threw me off completely (but was still great) before the song ‘properly’ started and became really funky. I really enjoyed the vocals here a lot; the guy’s delivery was just really cool and fit the music perfectly. The break in the middle led into a really cool Pink Floydian guitar solo that climaxed awesomely with the return of the piano from before and a general buildup of EVERYTHING in the song up to that point, before completely blue balling me with the ending. :lol Great song, I’ll have to check this band out more.

4th Place – 4 Points
DTVT
Redemption – Memory

Despite the pure rage I could feel emanating from DTVT in his message to me with this, I hope he’ll be reconciled by the fact that I loved it. :lol I’m gonna be a noob and say that the whole thing massively reminded me of I&W era DT, which is no bad thing as that’s my favourite DT album. The intro was very interesting, and would ironically have made great late night music too. :lol I really liked the vocals in this, and the numerous instrumental breaks worked really nicely as inserts between the verses. The string parts the keyboards were doing throughout the track were excellent too, and really added to the all round epic feel. The break at around 5 minutes in reminded me ridiculously strongly of Metropolis as well, which again is a good thing. Best thing in the track: the very end. And I mean that in a completely non snarky way, the way there was the break before the ‘your name’ was just so damn cool. I’ll definitely be checking this band out after the roulette’s done! :tup

5th Place – 3 Points
Portucci
Crippled Black Phoenix - Troublemaker

Wow, I’ve really dismissed 2010 as a year for music based on this kind of thing being undiscovered by me up until now! This was very very cool metal-y post rock, and just sounded badass as soon as the foreboding intro was over. This is the kind of music I’ve been wanting to get into for ages, it’s so seamless with the way it integrates the heaviness into the more ‘wandering’ bits, for lack of a better word. The vocals were also very interesting; the fact that they were even there at all surprised me, but it was a welcome surprise for sure. This band has shot up my list of ‘to check out’s, and I can’t wait to hear more. :tup

6th Place -3 Points
Zxlkho
Buckethead – Population Override

Wow, this was very unexpected! I knew Buckethead covered basically every genre but this still surprised me with how jazzy/funky it was right from the start. The song doesn’t seem to drag at all despite it’s length, and it’s not just Buckethead who shines here, the whole band have awesome parts and it’s just a really fun, cool song overall. It can best be summed up by me linking it to a friend who only knows ‘Jordan,’ and he then said ‘WTF is he doing?!’ which I thought was great. And yes please Letters, based on that amount of studio work I might need some guidance. :lol

7th Place – 2 Points
Sonatafanica
Bjork – Possibly Maybe

This just reinforces my opinion on Bjork; I have no idea about her. I’ve loved about half of the songs I’ve heard from her, and equally hated the other half. Luckily, this was in the first camp. :lol The ‘riff’ or whatever you wish to call it is immediately appealing, and this is one of the times where I really enjoyed her vocals. The lyrics were also really interesting after a few listens, and I can see where Sonata gets inspiration for his long posts from now. :lol Not much to say here, except that I’d be willing to get into more Bjork of this kind fo’ sho.’

8th Place – 2 Points
Fluffy Lothario
Jacky Tar – Roving Journeyman

Based on Fluffy’s mysterious description, I had no idea what I was in for here. The intro didn’t help my overall confusion. :lol I actually really enjoyed this though, it had a great modern folksy feel and the vocals were, although largely unintelligible to me, great. The ‘verse’ was hilarious but so cool, and every new thing I heard in the song just made me appreciate it even more. This was way out of left field, but very interesting and enjoyable as a result.

9th Place – 1 Point
Space Invader
Telfer – Sync This Rock

I knew within the first 10 seconds of this song that I’d really like all of it. It’s infectiously funky, with a great and catchy guitar part that I immediately learnt, it’s so fun to play. My only mild complaint is at points the vocals are a bit weak, but that’s only in around one line per verse where it’s noticeable, and the backing vocals more than made up for this. The acoustic break at the middle was surprising, and then it led into an AMAZING guitar solo that floored me. Very cool song. I’m also insanely jealous of you for having such awesome neighbours. :lol

10th Place – 1 Point
Gorille85
KARKWA - Echapper au Sort

Sadly I think a lot of this went over my head, but other than the lyrics, I really enjoyed all of this. Comparisons with Arcade Fire immediately sprang up in my head as it started, which is no bad thing. The video was also really interesting. It was just a shame I couldn’t understand it! :lol The music was really good overall though, and the piano was surprisingly my favourite thing in it. I feel I can’t really say too much about this, as I feel the lyrics are a large part of it, but it was still really good.

Fluffy Lothario – 16 Points
Kari – 15 Points
Jamesman - 15 Points
Kingshmegland – 14 Points
Gorille85 – 14 Points
Space Invader – 12 Points
Portucci – 12 Points
Zxlkho – 11 Points
Sonatafanica – 9 Points
DTVT – 9 Points

My idea for the next round seems like it'll be a breeze for some of you but a difficult one for others. The theme is: non-guitar music. I hope that's a little less ambiguous than late night music proved for some, but should still be just as interesting.

Of all the Bjork songs, why Possibly Maybe? That's gotta be one of the dullest songs from her entire two first albums, and those are the only ones I can vouch for cos they're the only ones I've heard.

All the time with this roulette every single song could qualify for 4 points and up, but some just have to get less. And @Fluffy, I suppose on reflection it is a little dull, but it's one of the Bjork songs where I like her vocals, and it's just got a nice ambiance to it, which I guess could get dull the more I listen to it.

It all depends on how open minded you're feeling today. Because in terms of music I enjoy, it is probably the most far flung, unique stuff I got. Very beautiful in it's own way, but it took me a while to appreciate it. So yeah, I might be stumped for the next little while....

https://cloudkicker.bandcamp.com/ (https://cloudkicker.bandcamp.com/)
'
The song I sent ("Genesis Device") is off of The Discovery, his only full length album. He has a bunch of EP's that he puts out rather quickly.
I've really enjoyed Beacons; it was in my top ten of 2010.  I'll download The Discovery later tonight.  Really great find, J-Man!

Beacons is my favorite. Man.

I checked out their stuff back when you posted it in the facebook chat.

Kind of a one-trick pony.

Different strokes, I guess. I love the "atmosphere" he builds in his style. Maybe it's just because I love metal and ambient music, and the combination sounds wonderful to me.

Dagnammit, I was loving your picks.  Oh well, at least you got your pick for this round in, which I knew you'd be a frontrunner for. Well, I dunno what to do here, there's either a spot free or I just keep this going with 9. First listens are currently going on, by the way.

Dude, just tell him what the upcoming rounds are via PM and get him to submit songs for them all now. That's what Joe did in mine and it worked well.

Writeups all done, just waiting on Space Invader. This has been a tough round as there was no clear winner, which made it even harder than normal to separate all the picks. Unless SI sends something mindblowing, that is.

As I said earlier, another very difficult round where literally any of the top 5 were in contention for the 1st place spot, so don't read too much into the points, the descriptions are a more accurate portrayal of what I though. With that said, rankings are rankings, so:

1st Place - 6 Points
Gorille85
Boards Of Canada – Everything You Do Is A Balloon

Okay, so the first minute of this is one of the nicest pieces of music I’ve ever heard, seriously. I’d have been fine with just a loop of the intro seven times over. :lol But what did happen was equally good; some really relaxing, really atmospheric chillout stuff. It’s still got a kind of underlying sense of foreboding that manages to keep it more engaging than other music of its kind. This has become my new go-to homework music, which isn’t to say it’s boring, just that it’s perfectly relaxing and awesomely textured. Great choice, I knew you’d do really well in this round! :tup

2nd Place – 5 Points
Portucci
Felix Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto In E Minor Op 64 (first movement)

I knew Portucci would do well in this round as well, and he didn’t disappoint. I’m basically a complete classical music noob, so it was nice to have some specific stuff to look out for here as illustrated by Portucci in his message. I’m gonna have to agree with the classical bs talk and say that the music here really is very lyrical, and much more straightforward (in a good way) than a lot of the classical music I’ve tried, and failed, to get adequately stuck into before, which made for a nice change. The movement was incredibly well structured, the way it begins to wind down towards the end but then picks up again is great and keeps it exciting throughout. I’m gonna make sure to check out the whole concerto at the end of the roulette, Mendelssohn really does seem like the kind of composer that could actually successfully get me into classical music more.

3rd Place – 4 Points
Space Invader
Rajaton – Nouse Lauluni

I’m surprised this was the only a capella song I got sent this round, but I’m sure this would also be pretty damn hard to beat in that category. Firstly, if we remove the fact that it’s a capella, it’s still a really great pop song as it is, and the lead vocal melody is excellent. THEN if you factor in the a capella-ness, it becomes that much more awesome. :lol It’s really astonishing how layered this is for something comprised solely of vocals, but it really got across the sound of a full band, and it didn’t even feel gimmicky after the surprise I felt at the intro wore off. I would say I’d like to check out more a capella, but this seems like far and away the best in the genre I’ve ever heard. Other than that YYZ thing on YouTube. :lol Very interesting pick!

4th Place – 4 Points
Fluffy Lothario
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – A Night In Tunisia

I was really hoping I’d be getting some jazz from Fluffy in this round, and he certainly didn’t disappoint. The amazing percussive intro really sets the almost-frantic mood here, and the song just builds on that without looking back. The sax work here is great, and the song takes a left turn at about 8 minutes that was playful but still fit the mood really well. Not to much to say here as I don’t know enough jazz to compare this to anything too well, but I really enjoyed it and it was a great pick.

5th Place – 3 Points
Jamesman
Aphex Twin and Squarepusher - Freeman, Hardy, and Willis Acid

I’ve been reading about IDM recently after gettomg Nothing Lasts… But Nothing Is Lost by Sphongle and loving it, but I wasn’t sure where to go from there. Aphex Twin now seems like the best possible direction! The drums here were indeed crazy and hypnotic at points, and the sounds in the background were creepy and built up a really cool atmosphere. I love how the drums are literally constantly building up in the first half, and then they ratchet up the tension even more at the halfway mark by exploding into an even more complicated sounding beat. The song then ‘calms down’ a bit around four minutes in, and there are more really creepy ambient noises in the background, and then some random bass stuff that made me laugh the first time I heard it. :lol It was cool though, and as James says, the song ends awesomely, with some sort of effect at 5:05 that left me and some YouTube commenter perplexed, but amazed. Awesome track!

6th Place – 3 Points
Zxlkho
Portishead – Numb

I love all Portishead I’ve heard up to now, so I knew this was gonna be great as soon as I saw who it was. It didn’t disappoint; the vocals were as good as ever with this artist, and the music was bit more creepy and distant than I was expecting, which was a nice surprise. As you said I would, I now know that this album is awesome and I MUST CHECK IT OUT, I’ve always wanted to get into Portishead more (ha) and now I know where to start. Good pick! :tup

7th Place – 2 Points
DTVT
Peter Gabriel - Moribund the Burgermeister

This was an interesting pick for non guitar music, and was probably the only more traditional rock/prog song in this round, which set it apart nicely. I’ve never been an enormous fan of Gabriel but I’ve enjoyed everything of his I’ve heard well enough, and this was no exception. The verses had some great synth stuff going on in the background, and the chorus was (intentionally it seems) cheesy 70s prog at its best, with a brilliantly overblown refrain that worked really well. The bridge was very unexpected :lol But was still cool. This is another song to add to the bunch of Gabriel tracks that I like, and might well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and gets me to check him out properly!

8th Place – 2 Points
Sonatafanica
Vanessa Carlton – The Wreckage

I have no idea if Sonata was being ironic with his pick here or not, but I actually loved it. :lol I’ve always really liked Vanessa Carlton’s voice, and her piano work here was as good as I’d have expected from her. The lyrics were INTENSE AS HELL (although not as intense as any Mark Gormley song) and overall I really enjoyed it, plus the ‘dark’ atmosphere was pretty cool (I say dark relatively to other Vanessa Carlton songs) So yeah, I liked it. :lol

9th Place – 1 Point
Kari
Arvo Part – Spiegel Im Spiegel

After I got over the initial lolling at the song title, I settled down to listen. My overall conclusion is basically that it’s objectively amazing, but it went over my head a bit in terms of general maturity. It was incredible and I can easily see why it’s so emotional, and it is just a really great minimalist piece in general, but I feel like I personally couldn’t bring myself to ‘sit through’ the 10 minutes length more than a few times, despite how much I enjoyed it every time I did. So basically, this is a wonderful piece that the more discerning of you should check out, but I’m a bit too shallow to place it too highly here. :lol Blame me for this not yourself Kari, your pick was still awesome, I’d just rate it much more highly if it was half as long for meatheads like myself. :lol

10th Place – 1 Point
Kingshmegland
Ben Folds Five – The Battle Of Who Could Care Less

First thing that came to mind: modern day Beach Boys. Admittedly they turned out to remind me a bit more of Weezer by the end, but the harmonies are very Beach Boys-esque at points in the chorus and the ‘doo doo’ bits. For what seemed to be a mainstream song for a second, this was really pleasantly jazzy, and the lyrics were funny and clever the whole time. The video was also great; I’d recommend everyone watch it. :lol My only problem here is that other than the jazziness, the music is a little generic here, but I think Folds’ voice and lyrics are enough to carry it.

Fluffy Lothario – 20 Points
Gorille85 – 20 Points
Jamesman - 18 Points
Portucci – 17 Points
Kari – 16 Points
Space Invader – 16 Points
Kingshmegland – 15 Points
Zxlkho – 14 Points
Sonatafanica – 11 Points
DTVT – 11 Points

Also, just so you guys know, Portucci did manage to send me his remaining songs in the heat of leaving for the airport, so he's still in.  :lol

Round 6: I've realised that I barely listened to anything other than the big mainstream albums of the last few years, so Songs From 2008-2010 is the next category, which should interesting. Apologies for the brevity of some of the writeups this time, but if all the submissions are in by Sunday then I'll be able to spend longer on the writeups as school's the main reason for the shortness of these ones. GOGOGOGO

There might be some mistakes in this as it's very late, so just tell me if I've got something wrong or left you out completely,  :lol

1st Place – 6 Points
Fluffy Lothario
Fat Freddy’s Drop

This is the first instance in this roulette where after being sent a track I immediately went and listened to the whole album it was on. Fluffy’s description of it as ‘soul, jazz, reggae, synth-ey techno/drum and bass’ left me very excited to hear how this could possibly all come together, and my God, did it deliver. This was one of the most original songs I’ve heard in a long time, and the whole album is INCREDIBLE and fuses all of the genres I’ve been particularly interested in lately into one mindblowingly genius whole. This wasn’t even my favourite track on the album! (that honour goes to Shiverman based on my first listen) So yeah, wow, what a band. Edit: ARGH I’ve had the ‘waiting for the storm to come’ bit stuck in my head ALL DAY! But I can’t complain, I love it. :lol

2nd Place – 5 Points
Portucci
Emancipator - Safe In The Steep Cliffs

Bearing in mind the fact that Portucci sent this song, with 2 others, in the 20 frantic minutes before he left for the airport, I wasn’t expecting this to be up to his usual quality of picks. But OH MY GOODNESS, how wrong I was. After one of the most gorgeous intros I’ve ever heard to a song, this track just kept on giving, with some lush guitar work and brilliant strings throughout. I was hesitantly expecting vocals to come in the whole way through, but I’m actually glad they didn’t, as this is basically one of the most beautiful, calming instrumentals I’ve ever heard outside of strictly classical and ambient. Lovely track.

3rd Place – 4 Points
Jamesman
Jesus Culture – Where You Go I Go

This woman has one of the most amazing voices I’ve heard in a long time. Seriously, before the song had even got going I loved it just due to her singing. This song was, in every non-stupid-internet sense of the word, epic, and I didn’t mind whatsoever that it was a worship song, I think everyone should check this out regardless of religious beliefs. It progressed into an amazing climax in the middle, and then calmed down again superbly for an excellent ending. What was really nice here was how perfect the singer’s voice was both in the quiet intro and outro, and in the soaring choruses. What a great song, one that’ll definitely be on repeat on my laptop for a long time to come. Also funny was that Jamesman actually forgot to send me a link this time, but it was fine. :lol

4th Place – 4 Points
Kari
Yeasayer – O.N.E.

This was the kind of thing I was hoping to get in this round, as I knew there was amazing modern, relatively popular music that I hadn’t heard, and would never have done without being shown like this. This band is really innovative, they have a sound that feels really fresh but somehow has a sort of retro-vibe to the instrumental side of things too. I really loved the guy’s voice, and the song was constantly exciting and surprising for all of its length. The last minute or so is so perfect that I’d be fine if the song had a 10 minute coda of just that. :lol Not much more to say here, as literally everything in the song was great.

5th Place – 3 Points
Gorille85
Mew – Introducing Palace Players

Mew are a band I’ve heard loads about, all of it good, but haven’t ever gotten round to checking out. I was expecting some Radiohead-style art rock, but the guitar in this blew me away! This song has some of the most intricate but elegant guitar work I’ve heard in modern music, and the way it develops throughout the song is amazing. The vocals here were also really cool, and I like how they’re only introduced fairly late in the song, which always leaves me wanting more. I’ll be asking for recommendations for Mew after this roulette fo’ sho.’

6th Place -3 Points
Sonatafanica
The Depreciation Guild – Digital Solace

Despite Sonata making me :lol hard with his message telling me to at least only give him one point, I can’t comply, I enjoyed this too much. The guitar work in this was really chilled out and excellent, and then the energetic chiptune fit bizarrely well over it. I really liked the guy’s voice a lot too, and the breakdown where it was just him over the drums at around 2 minutes in was perfect and awesome. So sorry Sonata, but this has to get more than 1 point. :lol

7th Place – 2 Points
Kingshmegland
Our Lady Peace – Monkey Brains

What a fun, fun song. This track is really energetic throughout and just has a great sense of playfulness and rebelliousness that I really enjoyed. The vocals were great, and the guitar work throughout was really speedy and bouncy, and great fun to play. My only complaint is that the section in the middle feels a little bit disjointed from the rest of the song, and it doesn’t flow back into it too well, but that final chorus gets me every time, it’s just such a good singalong track!

8th Place – 2 Points
Zxlkho
Karnivool – New Day

I’d heard comparisons of this band to Tool so I’d always been curious as to how well they actually held up to my joint favourite artist EVER. And this song really, really did. The vocals were great and actually better than Maynard in some moments (blasphemy!) and the structure overall was really cool, the way it crescendoed and decrescencoed several times throughout kept things interesting. Of all the songs I’ve been sent so far, this was the one that really didn’t feel anywhere near as long as it was, it was great, and finally gives me the push I needed to know that I’m a nub for not checking this band out before now.

9th Place – 1 Point
DTVT
Enslaved – Clouds

This was creepy, and heavy… BUT I really liked it! :lol The chords at the beginning set the mood amazingly, and when the harsh vocals came in I actually didn’t mind, they fit the atmosphere really well. The song was heavy and awesome until about 4 minutes in, then THAT break happened and it was like an even better version of the kind of thing Opeth would do, and I was hooked. As DTVT will know, I’m not the biggest fan of harsh vocals, but this song really pulled them off well and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

10th Place – 1 Point
Space Invader
Pathosray – Sons Of The Sunless Sky

This WHOLE song reminded me very strongly of Systematic Chaos era DT, which, for me, is no bad thing, as I really enjoyed that album more than most here. The riffing in the beginning was breakneck and awesomely heavy, I really loved how unrelenting it was in the first minute or so. The song progresses really nicely into some softer sections, and the guitar solo that you feel coming for the whole song doesn’t disappoint, it’s great technically and pretty good emotionally too. I’d actually go as far as to say that this track balances the heavy and the soft better than DT ever did in SC, and it’s just overall a really fun listen every time. EDIT: Hot damn, how did this end up in last place?

Fluffy Lothario – 26 Points
Gorille85 – 23 Points
Jamesman - 22 Points
Portucci – 22 Points
Kari – 20 Points
Space Invader – 17 Points
Kingshmegland – 17 Points
Zxlkho – 16 Points
Sonatafanica – 14 Points
DTVT – 12 Points

I might consider doing a wager thing in the final round to let people in the bottom half have a chance to move up more if you guys want.

Penultimate round: Songs with great solos, on any instrument!

Yes, hail Fat Freddy's!!!

There's barely a single person I've shown that band to who didn't love them. I introduced them to an English friend, and he went to a music festival in Paris a few months later, in large part because they were there. I read a story a month or so ago about a French fan of theirs who flew to New Zealand, (as in, 18,500km) to see them because he won a ticket to a gig.

And yeah, that's probably not my favourite track on that album either, but then for me, it's almost impossible to pick a favourite from that album. I still remember the way my jaw just dropped for seventy-odd minutes the first time I listened to it.

I think I sent The Raft because it's probably the best track in terms of representing the entire spectrum of genres they pull off. Whereas The Nod is more quirkiness/jazz, Wild Wind is spooky dub, Shiverman is mainly techno, Big BW laidback jazz, Boondigga quite poppy etc, The Raft kind of combines them all.

Yeah dude, her voice is so well-rounded, and compliments the music well. The moment I heard this song, I knew I had found one of those gems in the genre. Glad you enjoyed it!

The thing is I have been liking basically every song I've been sent a lot, so the point system has become sort of arbitrary at this stage as I'm gonna eventually get round to checking out essentially every band I've been sent, including Enslaved for sure after hearing that.

Also, one of the picks I've been sent has put me in the best mood ever this morning, and I think they know who they are.  :lol

To me it always was. I'm actually amazed some people care so much about the scores, I mean, the point of this is to expose someone to a lot of different music. To me at least it's never been about sending the best possible as to get as much points as possible.. Just to go as diverse into what fits the categories. That's my interpretation at least. :)

Yeah and in that respect, I'd say this roulette has given me exactly what I'd hoped for. Every single person has sent me at least five artists or genres each that I'm now determined to check out, and I've got a queue of about 60 albums I need to listen to at this stage.  :lol

I remember the first freeleech at this private music tracker I'm am member of. I must've downloaded at least 15GB of all new music, just clicking randomly on Last.FM related and recommended artists, and then some more. It really was wonderful to be able to open your music player, import some new music and be amazed instead of listening to something you'd already heard a lot of times.

The thing is, I feel like I've pretty much listened to "all there is" regarding music like the music I downloaded then (it was mostly post-rock, shoegaze and indie). And while I've branched out a lot since then, I'm not as excited for new music anymore as I was back then... That's why I signed up for a song roulette, I think that all I need is this initial push. :D

Another round that was nigh on impossible to rank.  :sadpanda: On the plus side, you guys keep your 100% record of sending in awesome songs.

Round 7

1st Place – 6 Points
Jamesman
David Crowder Band – God Almighty, None Compares

I had the exact same reaction as James friend at the end of this song, and it was, ‘HOLY CRAP. WAT,’ and I mean that in THE BEST WAY possible. Because good God (lolnugget) this was epic. Yes, it was majorly cheesy, but I figure that’s partially because I find the subject matter intrinsically cheesy personally so I can’t really comment on it one way or the other. But regardless of cheese levels, this song reached the most epic heights I’ve heard in a long time by the end, and that solo at about 6 minutes in was the best release of tension possible for the song. It’s also really addictive, with a plethora of amazing riffs that could carry entire songs if on their own. JAMES STOP MAKING ME LIKE PRAISE MUSIC :lol P.S I got a really strong Coheed vibe from this based on what little I’ve heard of them, anyone agree?

2nd Place – 5 Points
Sonatafanica
Yoko Kanno And The Seatbelts – Car24

Okay, so Sonata instructed me to listen to this on a walk, and I did, and I did indeed have the greatest walk of all time. It’s songs like these that make me think that incidental music in life really would be the best superpower of all; this just put me in such a good mood and made me laugh as it started. :lol I’m tempted to put this as my alarm clock song but I don’t want any negative associations with it whatsoever, it’s just so happy and the sax solo is awesome. :lol

3rd Place – 4 Points
Kari
Kraftwerk – Pocket Calculator

I really do need to check out more electronic music, if the stuff Kari’s been sending me this roulette is anything to go by. This song, after making me :lol at the sample used, settled into an awesome groove that was incredibly catchy after my first listen, and the solo was indeed amazing, and one of the more out of the box ones I received this round. :lol Nothing wrong with that though, I’m glad you chose this kind of thing, it was really interesting and I’ll make sure to look into Kraftwerk also. Also, best lyrics ever. Space Invader

4th Place – 4 Points
Space Invader
Maynard Ferguson – Chameleon

This is one of those songs, along with Sonata’s, that just puts a big dopey grin on my face when I hear it. I love this kind of stuff, and so this was a great pick, I enjoyed it from the very first to the very last second. I have no idea how good it actually was as a piece as I’ve got no knowledge of the genre, but it sounded great to me and that’s all that matters for me. :lol This is gonna be on repeat on my iPod so often that I’ll get annoyed of it soon, but that’s just testament to it’s addictive greatness. Awesome pick! :tup

5th Place – 3 Points
Zxlkho
Coheed and Cambria – Gravemakers & Gunslingers

Oh man, I need to check out so many bands after this is over. :lol I had indeed given Coheed a try before and couldn’t really get into them past the obvious choice of Welcome Home, but Letters has convinced me to try again with this beast of a track. The riffage here was great and basically up to the ridiculous standard of guitar work that Welcome Home has, which is no mean feat. I also actually really enjoyed the vocals here, which is weird as it was one of the facets of Coheed that I wasn’t a huge fan of before. But here they were cool and, dare I say it, badass, and the soloing was indeed immense. They’re firmly back on my list of stuff to check out.

6th Place - 3 Points
Kingshmegland
Spock’s Beard – She Is Everything

Holy crap, this song had an amazing solo. Whilst I realise the reverence SB are treated with ‘round these here parts, I wasn’t blown away by the song itself; that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, I figure I’d just need to listen to it in the context of it’s suite to fully appreciate it. But when that solo hit, OMIGOD. I’m gonna check this band out just on the strength of that solo for sure now, it was truly amazing and perfectly structured, and, surprisingly for prog, didn’t veer on technicality over emotion whatsoever. Brilliant.

7th Place – 2 Points
Fluffy Lothario
The Lonely Shepherd – Gheorge Zhamfir

I’m one of the few people in the world who hasn’t yet seen either Kill Bill, so this was a nice unknown track to me. And it really was very enjoyable. It was a little cheesy, but it’s the intro to Kill Bill of all films so I’ll forgive that in a heartbeat. :lol I really liked the way it built up during its short length into something much more majestic than I’d have guessed from the beginning, and it hasn’t lost any of its appeal on repeated listens yet, which is always a good sign. As a solo it was amazing, and it also makes me want to see Kill Bill even more which is a plus. :lol

8th Place – 2 Points
DTVT
Tony MacAlpine – Tears Of Sahara

This guy is FREAKING INSANE. His tone was amazing, and I wish we got this kind of more classic sound in some of JP’s solos rather than the modern tone he uses nowadays. The solos were indeed awesome, and the harmony bit that made up the last 40 seconds or so took it to a new level, it was brilliant. I don’t think it’s cheating sending in an instrumental song as this song had great solos regardless of whether there was singing or not, and they were very cool.

9th Place – 1 Point
Portucci
Kraan – Nam Nam (Live)

Wow, this was a daunting song. :lol The solos were absolutely insane though, they encompassed everything from jazz to funk to classic rock and I loved all of them. What was also of note here was how cool the bass line was, or it might have been a guitar doubling it, I can’t be sure. I loved how the solos kept coming together for some awesome jazzy rhythm part, and then branched off again. This wasn’t hampered by its length at all, it’s one of the best live jam sessions I’ve ever heard. The recurring ‘themes’ that popped up a couple of times throughout the song were also excellent, and the fact that they were punctuated by solos of so many different styles and speeds really made the song a joy to listen to from start to finish. Unfortunately, the length does make it a bit much for repeat listens, which is one of the only reasons it’s comparatively low this round. I did still enjoy it a lot though!

10th Place – 1 Point
Gorille85
The Agonist – Martyr Art

Man, I wish I could get into this more. The section from 3:25 to the end is just so so so damn good, epic solo and all, that I wish I was man enough to get into the first 215 seconds. :lol It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just that, as DTVT will definitely testify, I’m a wimp when it comes to harsh vocals, so I couldn’t really get past the sheer oppressiveness of the track for most of it, which I’m sure is largely the appeal. It IS ridiculously impressive that she did all of those vocals though, I could scarcely believe it. And yes, she is very hot. :lol

Fluffy Lothario – 28 Points
Jamesman - 28 Points
Gorille85 – 24 Points
Kari – 24 Points
Portucci – 23 Points
Space Invader – 21 Points
Kingshmegland – 20 Points
Zxlkho – 19 Points
Sonatafanica – 19 Points
DTVT – 14 Points

Well, we've come to the final round folks. I'd like to thank you now for all the awesome stuff you've sent me, this has given me enough music to go until at least the end of the world in 2012 and beyond if we get there.  :lol But seriously, amazing stuff.

For the final round, it's definitely going to be an Open Round, but I'm not sure how you guys want to do it. Do we want a betting system so people in the bottom half can stand a chance or something? I'm fine with anything really.

:lol Sorry if you feel that way DTVT, it's not a knock on your taste or anything, we just clearly have different tastes, as you tend to prefer more classic prog stuff to the music I'm into. I'm sorry you haven't enjoyed this roulette, but I'm happy you've been in it as I've still got loads of awesome stuff you sent in to check out further.

Anyway, any ideas for the final round? We could just do a normal one I guess, but I feel like that would be unfair.

Maybe something like this:
If you divide the ten participants in 3 "clusters"

Cluster 1: #1 and #2.
Cluster 2: #3, #4 and #5.
Cluster 3: #6, #7, #8, #9 and #10.

Cluster 1 goes to the finale, no matter what.
In cluster 2 only two people can advance, so one of them won't make it to the finale.
And in cluster 3 they get to battle for the final finale spot..

That way you have 5 finalists and everyone still has a chance to make it there... So you'd compare the points within their clusters and the top 2 of cluster 2 will advance, as well as the winner of cluster 3.

Or something.. You know?

That's kind of what I did, so obviously I'm in the "pro-playoffs" camp...but since he's already ran 7 or 8 rounds, a playoff might be a bit much.  Just run a round worth double points, or maybe score it 10 to 1 so there are more points on the table.

I'm not upset...I'm just mocking G's lack of taste :)

Also, I hate losing.  I play for blood, motherfuckers.

I kind of realised after sending my song that, though being an instrumental and having solos obviously, it wasn't really solo-tastic as such.

I think I'll dwell on my last song a little while, I'm tempted to send something quite out there.

I kind of like this idea, then out of the final 5 there could just be one more open round and I'd pick positions based on that song, and how well they'd done overall. Are people happy with that idea?

This round definitely threw up some surprises!

Round 8

1st Place – 6 Points
Space Invader
Pendragon – Indigo

This was one of the most immediately appealing of the longer tracks I’ve been sent throughout this roulette. The song has a load of different moods and styles that all combine brilliantly, and the vocals are really strong and help to ground the song in a more familiar structure for the first half. What I liked about the first, more traditional half of the song is how crazy all the instrumentation was under the verses; there were constant licks and drumfills that kept stuff interesting throughout, and the vocals themselves were good enough to not even need the awesome backup they got. Around 5 minutes in it earns it’s prog labelling, with an incredible bass-driven atmospheric section with amazing synth and acoustic work, and then it gets pretty heavy but retains the atmospheric vibe of before. This breakdown is just ridiculously good, and it’s what really made the song for me. I realise I’m essentially describing the song structure here, and I don’t want to ruin it for people. Listen to this song if I haven’t spoilt it too much already! :lol It’s one of the best prog tracks I’ve heard since I got into the genre, and was constantly surprising with the directions it took, and it pulled all of them off very very well. (Bonus spoiler: The vocalist seemingly turns into Steven Wilson at the end.) P.S: Ending solo = :O

2nd Place – 5 Points
Sonatafanica
Kings of Convenience – Misread

Sonata waited until the final round for his best pick, it seems. Much like Fluffy’s Fat Freddy’s Drop pick, I immediately listened to this whole album on Spotify on the strength of this track. It’s immediately relaxing and jazzy, which acts as a nice counterpoint to the depressing lyrics, which are simple but poetic, and work really well. Overall this is a really nice track that I haven’t, and don’t think I will, gotten tired of listening to at all, and the whole album is great as well which makes it an even better pick.

3rd Place – 5 Points
Kari
Explosions In The Sky – The Birth And Death Of The Day

I’m amazed at how little post rock I’ve been sent in this, so it was a nice choice of Kari to send some here. And what a track he chose. The intro with the high guitar parts immediately caught my attention, and conjured up really vivid mental imagery that the whole song sustained brilliantly. It really is the case with post rock (for me, at least) that when you’re in the mood for it, it offers an experience you just cannot get from other genres. Luckily I was definitely in the mood for this on my first listen, and it was a really emotional ‘journey’ of a song, with one of the more fitting song titles I’ve heard. The outro in particular really did sound like the end of a long day in musical form. Great song, I’ll make sure to check these guys out!

4th Place – 4 Points
Portucci
Diablo Swing Orchestra – Stratosphere Serenade

I knew that DSO were gonna be a bit outside of what I was used to in music simply by their genre and from what little I’d heard of them, but as it was Portucci’s recommendation I was also really looking forward to listening. This song didn’t disappoint. Admittedly, it was a little crazy at first listen, but after that it began to be a very rewarding song. The outro is my favourite part by far, it just sounds incredibly badass and, unlike Opeth’s Deliverance, I don’t think it goes on for too long at all. The female (I think :lol) vocals also worked nicely and fit the song well, and also made a nice break from the main vocals. A great track that has me interested, although slightly worried, to check out the band’s other work. :lol

5th Place – 4 Points
Gorille85
Mr Bungle – The Girls of Porn

Pure awesomeness. The bassline in this song might be one of the best I’ve ever heard, and it managed to fit the shorter heavy bit absolutely seamlessly into the brilliantly funky verses, which I loved equally. The vocals reminded me a lot of Faith No More in their delivery, which is by no means a bad thing; they added to the funky vibe of the song. (EDIT: I just realised they reminded me of Faith No More as it’s Mike Patton, so my bad for not realising that immediately. :lol I love that guy’s voice) It was also pretty funny throughout, with the various samples making me chuckle, and the final stanza having incredibly lolworthy lyrics.

6th Place – 3 Points
Kingshmegland
Rush – Xanadu

I know I’m gonna get shit for the simple fact that Shmeg was able to send this to me as I hadn’t heard it before. :lol I’ve heard a fair bit of Rush, but Lee’s voice had always put me off slightly. For some reason this wasn’t really an issue for me here, perhaps because the majority of the song was instrumental. The intro was immediately captivating, and the riffs were as memorable and creative as I’ve seen with every Rush song, which is one of the most appealing factors of their music to me. Peart was also on top form here as always, and I guess that every Rush song would have awesome drums, but as I haven’t heard that many forgive me for being amazed by them here. :lol The verses were very cool rhythmically, let alone instrumentally, with the ridiculous drums and the occasional time signature switch ups keeping everything interesting. The solo at the end was as awesome as any of Lifeson’s I’ve heard, which is most certainly a good thing, and the intro reprise was a great way to finish. This song definitely makes me want to continue my incredibly slow journey into Rush’s music. :lol

7th Place – 3 Points
Fluffy Lothario
Bedřich Smetana - Vyšehrad (The High Castle)

I was expecting a bit of a trek when I saw the length, truth be told, but this song surprised me by holding my attention far better than a lot of prog epics do ([/controversy.) It started off very gently, which I always like in classical music, and slowly built up, and then down again, several times, but never in a contrived manner. The album art here also added to the song a lot, it really suited the music, which wasn’t something I’d have expected to ever be an issue, or a plus point, in classical music, before. Admittedly, as I’ve said before, I don’t have much of a frame of reference in classical music to compare this to anything too strongly, but I’ve listened to a fair bit before and this stood out to me as being better than a lot of the rest. The final couple of minutes were especially well done.

8th Place – 2 Points
Zxlkho
Katatonia – Omerta

Ooh, very interesting. This isn’t what I was expecting based on what other Katatonia I’d heard, but it was a very pleasant surprise nonetheless. I can almost imagine Opeth doing something like this in their next album; it just evokes that feel to me for some reason. The vocals were slightly strange but very cool, and the guy has a really unique but interesting voice. As Letters said, it does end ridiculously abruptly, but that doesn’t really take away from the rest of the song for me. Very interesting track.

9th Place – 1 Point
Jamesman
Waterdeep – I’m Afraid That I’m Not Supposed To Be Like This

I really liked the soundscape this song had going on during the verses, which was the most immediately appealing thing to me on my first listen. After that the vocals began to grow on me a lot (they weren’t bad to begin with or anything, I just didn’t realise how good they were) The lyrics were nice, even if I’m not a huge fan of worship lyrics, but I can certainly admit that they were well written. My only complaint is that the song didn’t really go anywhere, which I know is sort of the point (it would be completely incongruous to have an epic solo tradeoff, for instance :lol) but I still felt kind of let down by the end. All the same, Jamesman once again convinced me that I absolutely cannot write off music just because of a preformed conception I had about it, and I’m tentatively looking forward to checking out some more worship music after this roulette! :tup

10th Place – 1 Point
DTVT
Reverend Horton Heat – Cowboy Heat

Lol. As epic as this track was, I think this might have possibly been intentionally bad. Thanks for playing DTVT! :tup

I would like to say now how thankful I am to every single one of you for participating so awesomely in this roulette, all of you have sent me mindblowing, surprising, insane and completely amazing tracks, and given me a massive spread of artists and albums to check out. I'm gonna do the now traditional post roulette thing and keep updating this thread with my thoughts on the stuff I check out: I think some I Mother Earth is first on the cards after this is over, and I'll check out stuff round by round from there. Once again, thank you all for playing, you've been consistently brilliant every single round.  :D

Now, the scores throw up a bit of a problem:

Fluffy Lothario – 31 Points
Jamesman - 29 Points
Kari – 29 Points
Gorille85 – 28 Points
Portucci – 27 Points
Space Invader – 27 Points
Sonatafanica – 24 Points
Kingshmegland – 23 Points
Zxlkho – 21 Points
DTVT – 15 Points

I did want to use Kari's system, but that would result in 7 people going through to the top 5.  :lol What do you guys want to do here? Once again, I don't really mind. We could just end it here, but I feel like the people tied for positions might want 'closure,' or something.

Glad you liked it for what it was dude! :)

I'm fine with whatever, this has been fun and it was cool to see that you liked the genre's style...because there is some really generic stuff in that genre. :lol :)

I definitely wouldn't mind doing a finale of the final 6 (ie Space Invader and upwards) if people didn't mind, but if people are ok with leaving this as it is then that's ok with me too. And yeah, I've really enjoyed this right the way through, I got a lot of the kind of music I'd always wanted to get into but just didn't know where to start!  :D

Damnit I demand a proper write up for my song (It's called Cowboy Love, not Cowboy Heat).  I'm fine with 10th place, but I want a proper write up.  Tell them what that song is about G.  Do it.

:lol I think DTVT's song speaks for itself, I'd recommend people listen to it for teh lolz.

Well it doesn't really look like a finale is going to be happening based on feedback, so I'd like to say an official congratulations to Fluffy for being the victor, but as there were only 4 points between the top 6 it really came down to the wire. You were all consistently brilliant, and I've really enjoyed running this. But of course, THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING GUYS (cheesy music) as I'm now checking out all of these awesome new artists and albums, starting with I Mother Earth as we speak, which I'm loving. So yeah, an immeasurably large thank you to all of you, you've been awesome.

Seriously, Reverend Horton Heat are awesome, and that's the only song about gay cowboys boinking each other.
