Title: The Chiptune Thread
Post by: sonatafanica on December 28, 2010, 03:49:23 PM
Let's get the bleeps and bloops going!

Just so you guys know, the first 8-bit release of 2011 will be Rise of the Obsidian Interstellar by Disasterpeace, a long-awaited album with an awesome album cover! I plan on getting it the second it appears for order.

Oh, and if you're among the first 100 to grab it, you'll get a code for this album: https://disasterpeace.bandcamp.com/album/the-chronicles-of-jammage-the-jam-mage

Seriously, listen to the track "At the Zombie Gates". omg.

Let the geeking-out commence!

I ordered the CD, but I'm listening to it on the Bandcamp (link (https://disasterpeace.bandcamp.com/)) and it's REALLY fucking good. Very progressive, lots of dynamics. Very very very creative. I'm glad this is the first album of 2011.

So I downloaded the LSDJ program for the Virtual Boy Advance.  Its very, VERY difficult to figure out at first, but Nullsleep's tutorial has really helped out.  So far I have a grand total of 1 ".3" bassline and messing around with effects.

Sweet.

I've made several songs with it, but nothing serious. I've just been working on getting comfortable with it.

Nullsleep is an awesome artist, by the way  :)

Well, I checked some of it out. Its a cool concept but I don't think death metal works too well with NES music. Plus I'm not a big fan of death metal to begin with.

Listening to Psilodump now.  This is really cool.  Haven't heard anything like this in Chiptune before, very dark, but bouncy and dancey, like the soundtrack to a sleazy space station strip club.

The best part about this genre is that most of it is free.  Only Chiptune albums I've had to buy were In Her Gentle Jaws and the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack.

This thread inspired me to get a lot of Chiptune, I'll link what I have. (a bit uncertain at come if they count as chiptune or not)

*Alex Mauer - Eat People 1,2,3, Lo-Gear and Vegavox 2
*Anamanaguchi - Power Supply
*Metronomnomnom - Psilodump
*She (Discography)
*The Depreciation Guild - Nautilus, In Her Gentle Jaws

Sonata probably knows best about where to start, and what kind of stuff I have. :P

She is the only one on there that isn't really chiptune all that much, just because the guy uses all kinds of keyboard synthesizers and programming loops outside of chipset sounds.

But She isn't too bad in any case.

Went on 8Bit peoples and downloaded the following:

Nullsleep: Electric Heart Strike and the Game Boy Singles
Starscream: Future and It Doesn't Work
Disasterpeace: Under the Influence
She: Pioneer
Paza: Slaphappy Bee EP III
Mark DeNardo: Lion, Tiger, Bear
Bit Shifter: Information Chase
Animal Style: TRENCHVENT and Open Air

So far I've just heard the Game Boy Singles (lots of cool stuff, some parts of the songs didn't work out quite so well though) and Future and it Doesn't Work (INFUCKINGCREDIBLEZOMG).  Listening to Under the Influence now and liking it, though confused about the presence of trumpets in chiptune.

Iknowwhatyouresayinbro. I was actually thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to say it wasn't chiptune because I figured sonata would come in and be like "IT IS CHIPTUNE BECAUSE OF A B AND C" and I'm not lookin for a fight man, I just wanna enjoy my bloots and my bleets.
Title: Re: The Chiptune Thread
Post by: skydivingninja on February 05, 2011, 12:44:00 PM
Your bleets?  This isn't sheep metal you nub.

So yeah, Under the Influence was pretty awesome.  Mark DeNardo is pretty good as well.  Sings in a sort of folky style, but the album description mentioned a "folky guitar" which I still haven't heard, so I'm a bit disappointed that its not really turning out to be the folktronica I expected, but its still good.  Worth a listen.

EDIT: Finally, some guitar!  This is what I'm talking about!

I think Sonata answered that question when you picked up a bunch of Chiptune and asked for opinions on it a page back, Zantera.  :lol

In any case, She is alright.

In any other case, I've been playing the fudge out of Rise of the Obsidian Interstellar by Disasterpiece and In Her Gentle Jaws by the Depreciation Guild recently.  And, since spring is here and summer is approaching, Anamanaguchi is going to get about about a bajillion plays.

For some reason I thought She had a really kewl website, nice artworks at least, so I ended up downloading all of the stuff, not really sure if I'll ever listen to it all, but chiptune doesn't really take a lot of space. :P

I can has also make teh chiptunes.

https://soundcloud.com/madcoil/madcoil-software
https://soundcloud.com/madcoil/madcoil-incredible-power
https://soundcloud.com/madcoil/madcoil-spacer

Although this kind of stuff isn't really a 'pure' chiptune as it's not made with actual SID chips. A lot of people confuse chip music with Amiga style .mod music, which used actual samples. I guess my stuff falls in the latter category, but they're 'close'.
