Amazed we don't have a dedicated thread already. Discuss/appreciate here.
New album coming out in the spring, wonder if it will be better than The Colour and the Shape, which is one of my favourites of all time. Dave Grohl has said it will be the heaviest yet.
Also, is there enough interest for me to do a survivor?
-
I'm a Foo-fan.
Favorite album would be "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace", i just think it's superb.
Not as big fan of the older stuff, but it's still good.
Favorite songs would be: Summer's End, Let It Die, The Pretender, Come Alive and Everlong.
-
I'm skeptical of the new material. The last one just didn't do it for me. Foo Fighters and Color and the Shape are two of my fav records ever, man those are amazing albums. I can't help but feel that after that Dave is slowly loosing some of his creativeness.
I remember Dave saying that In Your Honor is by far their best album and the one they will go down in the history books for. :lol
Interesting Dave says it's the heaviest material yet, I will keep an eye and ear out. You think with all the mainstream success of the last one they would continue in a more generic softer, catchier direction.
I reckon they should get Pat Smear back in full time and get back to their Color and the Shape roots.
Very good band.

This statement blows my mind.
-
I thought Echoes was the best since TINLTL, better than the self-titled, and their third best overall.
-
That's cool, I just love their older stuff too much, such amazing music.
-
The Colour and the Shape is really good, but Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace is definitely my favorite of theirs, too. I find the rest of their albums to be rather spotty, but they all have some quality stuff on them. Will definitely check this new one out. :)
-
I'm not the hugest Foo Fighters fan, but they have some good stuff.
Never tried their debut.
Colour and the Shape is definitely their best, and quite a solid album.
Nothing Left to Lose has a handful of good songs.
One by One would be my second favourite, and I think is almost as good as CATS.
In Your Honor is a tremendous mixed bag. When I listen to this album, I always get the feeling that Dave had written about six or seven softer songs and three or four heavier ones, and didn't want to make an imbalanced album. So he thought up the double album concept, and wrote the rest of the songs in one day just to fill the rest of it up. Many of the songs on the louder disc seriously sound like he wrote them in five minutes. The softer disc is much better though, and IMO is where Dave really had his heart on this album.
I gave the latest one a try, and it seemed totally boring and uninspired to me.
Also, their version of Have a Cigar with Brian May (I think it was?) was pretty cranking.

https://www.live4ever.uk.com/2010/11/dave-grohl-writing-silly-songs-for-new-foo-fighters-album/
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has said he is being urged to write more ‘silly’ songs as the band continue to work on the follow up to 2007′s ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace‘.
In an interview with NME, Grohl admitted he was asked by bass player Nate Mendel to try a less serious approach to his recent songwriting. “At one point Nate sent me an email, and said, ‘I really like it when you write songs that are silly and mean nothing, too,” he said. “You don’t have to try and write ‘Imagine‘ every time you sit down with a pen and paper.”
Grohl also further elaborated on his earlier claim that the new material would contribute to Foo Fighters’ ‘heaviest record yet’, saying the comments persuaded producer Butch Vig to ditch certain tracks. “When we were demoing we came up with all this heavy shit, so I said in an interview ‘this is going to be our heaviest record yet’,” he added.
“Butch saw it and then when I’d approach him with a new song idea, he’d say, ‘This doesn’t rock enough, no… Next.’ I’d have to show him another one.”
As well as his former Nirvana producer, the new album is also reported to be featuring Grohl’s former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic. In addition, Foo Fighters have announced two large outdoor UK shows at Milton Keynes Bowl on July 2nd and 3rd next year.
-
Huge Nirvana fan here..
where to start...this is such a vast subject.
I always wonder what would have been
I saw Dave on his first shows/tour at Roseland after Kurts passing..Dave was great that night, to me it was his best show

I agree with a lot of this, especially the new one being boring and uninspired. One on One would be my third favourite, that's an excellent album, forgot about that one.
If you like CATS, you should check the debut, a wonderful album, so many great melodies.
-
Yeah, I dunno why I never went back to their debut. I'll probably grab it off my brother next time I go home.

Yeah, I dunno why I never went back to their debut. I'll probably grab it off my brother next time I go home.
to me its the best one.. you can feel Kurts influence on the songs, I know he was helping Dave to write more before he passed, from my Kurt boots

You can definitely feel the Nirvana influence. I just love the songs on this album. The melodies on songs like I'll Stick Around, Alone + Easy Target, Good Grief and Wattershed are just flawless.
-
That first album was the shit in 95, and it still holds up today.

Older Foo Fighers >>>> Newer Foo Fighters.
-
I'm a fan too. I don't really have any favourite album, rather than some great songs from all their albums. My Hero, Everlong, D.O.A., Up In Arms, The Pretender, and Learn To Fly are my favourites.
-
It's not that i don't like the older Foo Fighters-stuff, but Echoes... is my favorite.
I just think it's flawless, i love all the songs individually, but together they form a very solid album.
Summer's End is my favorite FF-song, and i haven't yet heard another song by them that resembles it a bit, so i find it to be very unique.
;)

Glad to see they've gone back to the original version of Everlong.
Great, I hated the version that they have been doing for years now, absolutely killed the song.
You know, I love Pat, but is three guitars really necessary?

Thanks for sharing that!

How I would probably rank their albums.
One By One
The Color and the Shape
Foo Fighters
In Your Honor
There Is Nothing Left to Lose
Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace
I just found ESPG to be very underwhelming and predictable. Personally, I thought it was kind of dull.
One By One and TCatS are both fantastic. The debut is solid. In Your Honor has some great tracks. TINLtL has good moments, but I find that it drags at times.
I'm really hoping for great things on their next album.
-
the first concert i have ever been to was color and shape at the cambridge corn exchange. i love a good majority of their songs, especially Hell since it welcomes me to the Devils game every time and puts a smile on my face.
-
It's making me sad to see so many people ranking ESPaG so low, it's easily my favorite FF-album. :/
-
1. Colour and the Shape
2. Foo Fighters
3. Nothing Left to Lose
4. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
5. In Your Honour
6. One by One
-

I don't get that either, but to each his own.
-
Have all 6 of their albums, huge fan. TCATS is my favorite, amazing record. I saw them on the last tour when they did the arena run and it was seriously one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.
I'm really looking forward to the new album, all I know is that it's gonna be heavy, screamy, and loud, and that it was recorded in Dave's garage on analog tape. Should be good!!! :metal
-
A Foo Fighters documentary is apparently coming out!

I just bought tickets to their Stockholm show in June. Me, my girlfriend and a couple of friends are going to go. I've never seen them, nor heard that much material. So I'm going to buy myself my first album. Which one should I start with? Which one is the "classic" Foo Fighers-album?

Color and the Shape. And I have seen them live, IMO they were horrible.

The Colour and the Shape, without a doubt. It is solid the whole way through, and has three Foo classics that you are guaranteed to see them play - "Everlong," "My Hero" and "Monkey Wrench."
I saw them a few years back and they put on a great show. We all had a blast at it. :metal

Well, that was surprisingly easy, thanks guys! :D I thought I would get 4 or 5 different suggestions. Ordering it right now! :tup

Wow that song sounds like something off the album Foo Fighters.
Nice!
-
Thank You Zydar!!!
-
Looking forward to the new album. I just hope it doesn't run out of steam halfway through like ESP&G. From what I've heard so far, I don't think it will be a problem.
-
White Limo is amazing!! Is the whole album going to be like this?
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhdCslFcKFU
Look's like David's kind of lost it! :lol
FRESH POTS!
Their new song is much awesomer than I expected though, I hope they make an album like it.
-
The more I listen to White Limo, the more I like it, I hope this isn't a false teaser for this album.
-
My sources tell me the rest of the album is gonna be slow and jazzy, with lots of pianos, a la Steely Dan.
-
Dave said in an interview that the new album has no ballads.
-
on UsedBin radio a week or 2 ago, they mentioned/quoted Grohl about the new album being very Rush-influenced. I'm no fan of Dave Grohl's nor The Foo Fighters (nor Nirvana for that matter), but I know about Geddy and Alex joining them onstage a few years ago in Toronto. And given that quote, assuming it is true, I'm a little curious how this new album may sound.
-
I'm no fan of Dave Grohl's nor The Foo Fighters
This sentence makes no sense.
-
White Limo is amazing!! Is the whole album going to be like this?
I hope not. That'd get old in about three tracks.
-
Good videos of the whole new album (played live) are here: https://www.youtube.com/funfoofilms
-

I hope not. That'd get old in about three tracks.
It's probably a one-off, just like Weenie-Beanie was on the debut album.
-
Well, they did say it was going to be a heavier album. I just hope they don't force the louder songs just to make a whole album like that.
-
Am I the only one who didn't like White Limo? Cool video but pretty meh song. Perhaps a few more listens will do the trick.
-
Well, it's definitely not one of the Foo's best songs or anything, but as a one-off, I like it. It's fun, and just has a lot of energy to it.

I didn't like it either.

New single.
-
i like the single.
-
Much better than White Limo.
-
Reminds me of Wolfmother actually for some reason. I prefer White Limo.
-
Wow, that was 100x better than White Limo.
-
I think I like Rope better than White Limo. Either way, Rope is pretty generic, even for the Foos, and white limo is a little extreme. I hope the album is somewhere in between.
-
I was hoping for a decent single but maybe a little heavier from all the hype, but after listening to Rope again it's a very good song. Much better than their first single off the last one, The Pretender *vomits*.
-
What? I love The Pretender, it's one of their best songs ever IMHO. Different tastes, I guess :)

I like it!

Now on the Foos website too: https://wastinglight.foofighters.com/
-
Listened to the whole album now.
Really good.
Best one in ages. And I enjoyed Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace...
But This is even better.
This is the closest theyve come to sounding like the first two albums again.
-
Listening now. I'm really liking it so far.
So far, it feels a bit like The Color and the Shape meets One By One. This is a very good thing.
-
I wouldn't consider myself a fan (I don't own any albums), but I like every song I've heard from them. Which is many (thanks to my mom).
-
I'm on my first listen now to the album through their website. Really liking it so far, this could be one of their very best!
-
Only listened a couple of times but I enjoyed it more than I've enjoyed any Foos record in a very long time, since I first heard TCATS in fact.
-
Foo fan reporting. I heard that there is something on VH1 Classics some time soon about the Foo? Anyone have details.
-
i can't wait to see them, i assume the tour dates omit all usa shows for now.

Foo fan reporting. I heard that there is something on VH1 Classics some time soon about the Foo? Anyone have details.
There's a Foo Fighters documentary coming out that will be shown theatrically (no idea where) on the 5th, and on various VH1 stations on the 8th.

Haha, WTF Dublagent. I don't hear it. :lol
Anyway, I finally listened to this album and it's pretty awesome. Some of this stuff is better than their early material IMO. I'm really impressed and pleasantly surprised.

Agreed.
-
Picked it up and cranked it during the drive home (which became a very extended route). So damn good! Not crazy about the packaging, but the 'piece of the original master tape' included with it is a pretty cool inclusion.
Also, I love the sticker that was on the front of the packaging;
"Recorded Entirely On Analog Tape In Dave's Garage", as well as "PLEASE PLAY AT MAXIMUM VOLUME". :lol :metal
-
I'm not a fan but i like their music when i hear it. Whenever i hear The Pretender it plays in my head for weeks.
-
Given that this is getting very positive reviews everywhere, I'll have to pick it up later today. I was gonna get it eventually anyway, but it wasn't a priority like, "OMG, I gotta get it the day it comes out!" If this is as good as their last one, I'll be thrilled. :)
-
With the big deal they're making about the analog recording process, it almost feels like I'm doing it wrong, ripping the CD to my laptop so I can listen to it on my MP3 player. :lol

Got my piece of tape! ha

The whole album Rumbo is soooo damn catchy. I love it.
Though the levels on this cd is so damn high it's distorted so I've got to play with the EQ in my car. Music these days are made for ear buds and computers.

Except that they made a big deal about having an entirely analog recording process, and making sure they liked how it sounded on vinyl.

I'm going to play the cd in my car tomorrow and see. I did have a new stereo put in and this is the only download on my I-Pod that sounds distorted. It sounds great on my computer. Either way it's a killer album.

The new CD is spectacular, glad to see there's still a fairly mainstream hard rock band that can make something so good.

I've never gone crazy over their debut, even though many fans rave over it. I probably need to revisit and dedicate some time to it. I just have so much different stuff I am listening to right now, it is hard to give too much time to any one band, much less one record.
The new one is still damn good, though. Especially to work out to. :metal

hey johnny park is probably the best song they have ever written but this album is damn epic.

PIT TIX for Toronto!

Tickets have been bought for our show. wOOt! :hat :hat
-
Saw about 15 minutes of the new doco on tv, pretty good, looking forward to watching the whole thing.
-
This CD is so strong. This is quality stuff
-
Great CD it is truly the album of the year for me at the moment, although I tend to skip White Limo maybe not as easy listening as the rest.
I saw the documentary at the movies the other week, the 3D studio run through was great, a couple of times I actually felt as if I was standing two feet from the band watching on.
It was on television the other night, without the bonus at the end I figure it will be included on the dvd release.
Dave Grohl really needs to write a book, I don't know about you guys but he could talk all day long and I would listen.
Hopefully they are back in Australia later this year.
-

I agree with this. Album of the year so far, and White Limo is the only "weak" track for me.
I haven't seen the documentary yet though.

The documentary is truly awesome, it starts at the end of the Nirvana days all the way to the recording of Wasting Light. Comes out on dvd on June 14th I believe.

Zy. It's a must. Saw it on VH1 Classic here in the states. Rent it if you can.

This is the first FF album I have ever purchased, and I am blown away. I am so impressed that even deep into the CD like songs 9,10, and 11 are so killer.
This sounds like a classic already.

Finally got this the other day, and I am really enjoying it so far.
-
Yep, it is rock solid from start to finish. Hard to pick absolute favorites, but right now I'd go with Bridge Burning, These Days, Back & Forth and I Should Have Known. :metal
-
Live show streaming on itunes in about 20 minutes if anyone is interested. (4PM EST)
-
Late to the party but this record is a lot of fun. Bridge Burning :metal
-
Watched the documentary the other day. Awesome.

Called Lemmy out for a song, then Roger Taylor and Brian May from Queen all in one show! 3 hour set!

looks weirdly staged.

Finally got around to hearing the new album.
It was a good and solid album, but nowhere near the quality of Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, which I don't think they'll ever be able to top. :/

IMO, that's by far their worst album. Wasting Light is a huge step up.
-
Yeah, I know I'm in the minority of loving ESPG as much as I do, but it has so many interesting songs.
Wasting Light was full of rockers, but not many memorable songs compared to earlier Foo Fighters-albums IMO, the only song that really peaked my interest was "I Should Have Known", because it had some interesting arrangements.
To me the album felt more like a "crank up the volume in mah car"-type of album, but not much more then that.
ESPG however has fantastic songs like The Pretender, Let It Die, Erase/Replace, Come Alive, and one of my favorites by the band - Summer's End. :)
-
Wasting Light is probably their best one, IMHO. Walk, Rope, Arlandria, These Days, and Back & Forth are among their very best ever (especially Walk). The only weak track for me is White Limo.
Best album of 2011 so far, until September comes.
-
Wasting Light is probably my favourite Foos album, though maybe tied with Colour and the Shape.
-
I also really loved Echoes Silence Patience & Grace. But I think Wasting Light is amazing, not sure if it's better or not, but I've been listening to it a lot recently. Walk, Bridge Burning, Dear Rosemary and Arlandria are my favourites. But The Pretender, Let It Die, Come Alive and others from the album before were brilliant too. Either way, probably the last two albums have been my favourite Foo Fighters ones, although I do really like The Colour And The Shape.
-
Just stoppin by to say Exhausted is an excellent song to go to sleep to or to just enjoy in general.
-
Foo Fighters
Wasting Light
Colour & Shape
In Your Honour
Echoes Silence Patience Grace
There Is Nothing Left To Lose
One By One
That's my current ranking. ;)
-
ESP&G was okay, but it's definitely at the bottom of my list for their albums. Wasting Light by contrast is definitely one of their stronger releases.
If I had to rank them right now, it would probably be;
The Color and the Shape / One By One
Wasting Light
Foo Fighters
In Your Honor
There Is Nothing Left To Lose/Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace
-
The last two and The Colour and the Shape are easily the best three, IMO. All of the others only have a few select tracks from each that I dig, but those best three are all consistently very good.
-
The Colour and the Shape
Wasting Light
Echoes Silence Patience and Grace
Foo Fighters
One by One
In Your Honor

I Haven't heard all, but I would rank the ones I know something like this:
1. Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace
--
2. The Color and the Shape
3. In Your Honor

4. Wasting Light

Does anyone know why Wattershed (track 11 from the self-titled debut) is spelled with two "T"s. Strangely enough Foo Fighters toured with Mike Watt around this time so I wonder if the "Watt" part of the title is a sly nod to him.
Oh yeah, in a weird twist the Foo Fighters' website now has it spelled the proper way with just one "T".

Good concert last night. Just good.
The good:
-Great set list. Over half of the new album. and then the biggies from pretty much all of the other albums. I was happy, in particular, that they played I Should Have Known from the new record.
-As usual, Dave Grohl was entertaining as hell, as way Taylor Hawkins. Those guys bring as much energy to a rock show as anyone you will ever see.
-They played for three hours. For a show that long, you get your money's worth.
The bad:
-It was way too loud. That was easily one of the three loudest concerts I've ever been to. Even the opening acts were deafeningly loud. My ears are still ringing like crazy.
-Too many jams in too many songs, and always with the same format: stretch a well-written 4-minute song into a 8-minute concert one, by jamming on the main riff for extra few minutes, singing the chorus one extra time, teasing the crowd that the song is over, and then ending it with the main theme again. It was almost comical that they kept using that same formula in so many songs. It got a bit tedious after a while.
-They played for three hours. Considering many of their songs are pretty much the same type of song, they all started running together, especially given the above-mentioned jam format they kept using. Concerts that long usually only work if the band has a wide variety of types of songs that they play.
Overall, like I said, good show.

Last nights show can be summed by the post above. Excellent review!
Fantastic show, great selection of songs, Dave is such an amazing performer.
Definitely too loud, all 3 bands. Could have been the location of my seat, but sometimes it was hard to hear the vocals over the music.
-
I really like the Foos, but I couldn't imagine a 3 hour show.
-
Surprisingly, it wasn't bad for 3 hours! They mixed it up pretty good, but could have had more songs with less "jams".
SPOILER BELOW... set list

Totally :)
Here is a really accurate review (set list also listed here)- https://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/2011/10/foo_fighters_at_us_airways_cen.php
I really am surprised at how much energy the dude has. Truly a great concert experience.
-
OK...that is a pretty sweet set.
-
I think that Wasting Light should be called Greatest Hits: Vol. 2.
It's amazing.
-
Yeah, it is filled with songs with those big rock anthemic choruses. 20 years ago, it probably could have been one of those albums that had like five or six single and videos, all of which would have been pretty popular. But the landscape has changed, and I think the days of rock albums with more than a handful of big hits are probably over.
-
Unfortunately.
-
So I finally just got my first Foo Fighters album. Echoes, silence, patience and grace and I love it. :heart
I've always loved My Hero and Everlong, but for some reason, never got around to getting any of the albums, so I am very glad I finally did.
-
BTW, the foos are playing at the grammys. Twice. That should be cool stuff.

Definitely my favorite cover to cover.

Dave Grohl is paving all the way into becoming a Rock Legend IMO. In the current Hard Rock world I can't think of anyone else that's as "young" as him and as talented at the same time.
And Wasting Light is an amazing, solid album.

Bump. In Your Honor is their best album :tup

Dave is such a dude.

My ranking after recently give TINLTL another spin and really enjoying it :
1.Foo Fighters
2.The Colour And The Shape
3.Wasting Light
4.There Is Nothing Left To Lose
5.Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace
6.In Your Honour
7.One By One.
But seriously - The Top 3 albums are all so good that they're virtually interchangeable & TINLTL is a very close 4th.
ESP&G is a solid album but has some patchy moments. In Your Honour sounds like they were trying too hard and One By One is very patchy .
-
That Wembley DVD is so awesome.
My rankings:
1: There Is Nothing Left To Lose
2: Colour And The Shape
3: Wasting Light
4: Foo Fighters
5: In Your Honor
6: Echoes
7: One By One
Love all of them though.

Davy Grohl : " Next album will be made in a ground breaking way "...
I've been thinking about what it could be...
Maybe a tour to play all the new songs live and put out a CD of the best versions of the new songs live ?!
Maybe play completely live in a room and record it like a gig in the studio ?
A lot of times - when you know the songs inside out - you improvise a bit and go a bit crazy . . Maybe they could record the new album that way. .
. . then the new songs will be part written / part inspiration. .
If they played thru the entire new album a couple of times a day for like 2 weeks - and picked the versions with the best energy and off-the-cuff moments.
I'm not sure how else you could record an album in a totally new way...
Any thoughts ?
[INB4 - Yeh It Cud Be Gud 4 a Chnage ololol]
-
^^ Somehow, I don't like the sound of this when anyone mentions the word "Ground-breaking" in a rock world where there's not too much to break anymore.
But, at always, there's always a lot of good faith involve if Dave Grohl involve heavily in this thing and this Foo Fighters album should be another good one. Is it going to be as good as Wasting Light, Coleur and the Shape, There's Nothing Left to Lose and In Your Honor (the electric side of it is a very good sleeper and underrated if you ask me)? Who knows.
The thing to guarantee on this next album is that there will prob. be a huge world tour in support of it, the album will go gold by the end of the 1st year, and that it is going to be a great album and that everyone will think Dave Grohl is a rock god (I'm not in disagreement with them, but it can get tiring to say that Dave Grohl is a god or something like that).
-
I just can't think of how you would record an album in a way that's not been done before.
-
I just can't think of how you would record an album in a way that's not been done before.
They play everything backwards when recording but then flip it forward before mixing/mastering.
-
he probs bought the recording equipment of some classic album from the 60s and thinks using it is somehow groundbreaking.
actually, kotowboy might be onto something.
-
The Black Crowes created their album "Before the Frost...Until the Freeze" in a very similar way. They recorded performances over a series of five nights at Levon Helm Studios. The double cd, while a studio album was put together through recordings of those performances live in front of the band's fans. They choose the versions they liked the best and then compiled the recordings for the record.

-
The Foos are definitely one of the best mainstream rock bands out there, and one of the few mainstream modern rock bands I listen to frequently.
-
Next album will be recorded onto Wax Cylinder
OR
Completely improvised. Music, lyrics, everything.
-
Well they said it's been written so it won't be improvised.
AT least not 100% free form.
I'm gonna guess at rough or loose arrangements but recorded totally live several times and letting whatever happens - happen.
Kind of like how Curb Your Enthusiasm has an A and B in a sketch but no dialogue written down and the actors have to get there
themselves.

What could it all mean ?
I had a mad idea that they could record each instrument separately as normal but master each instrument individually for maximum overall audio quality - where nothing is fighting for space - then just mix the three or four mastered instruments that way ?
I dunno - Therapy? recorded an album where they did all drums with no cymbals then went back and overdubbed ONLY cymbals.
This mean that the cymbal track got no compression and cymbals sounded livelier and had way more decay.
Something like that maybe...
Also 3 years is probably the shortest hiatus ever. :lol - an album this year would still be quicker than most bands who aren't on hiatus.
* Also - didn't realise this but according to Wikipedia - Butch Vig is producing again. :tup
-
When Dave Grohl said a while back that it might be a long time until the next album, he was forgetting that good music just sort of happens whenever he's around. He was probably subconsciously writing a new song while making that announcement.
I do legitimately love how quickly they went from 'we're taking a break for a bit' to 'wait, nevermind, we have some ideas for a new album'. :lol Can't wait to see what they've come up with.
-
Happy Butch is producing again even though WL was a bit pushed.
I hope it sounds as good as Wasting Light - the production on that is stellar.
-
So I have stumbled upon a live stream that Foo Fighters are going to be playing in about 5 min. or so.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45-RbBft4aI
I already checked out the band before, Zac Brown Band. They had played about almost a 90 min. set. Hopefully, Foo Fighters can play about two hours. Wheeeeeee. That would be just awesome.
-
I don't know where else to put this, but Taylor Hawkins has taken part in a side project called The Birds of Satan. He sings lead vocals in it. The band has released an album stream on their site.
https://thebirdsofsatan.com/stream/
On a side note, the opening song is a 9 min. track.
-
Listening to the first track now. It's pretty interesting so far.
Getting a bit of a 'Them Crooked Vultures' vibe from it.
Also, maybe it's just me, but parts of it feel like at least one of them listened to Cygnus X-1 before writing it. :lol Probably not, but it certainly wouldn't be a bad place to get inspiration from.

Tons of bands have used that technique. Megadeth and QOTSA off the top of my head.
Looking forward to hearing this new one, you can pretty much count on the Foos to have a few decent tracks up their sleeve with each album.
-
It will be hard to live up to Wasting Light but it will doubtless be a fun experience.
-
:metal
-
Hmmm, sounds interesting. Year's best album prize could come to FF really easily...
-
If it's any bit as good as Wasting Light it will be a sure Album of The Year for me.

I just love this, a show I would give my kidney or left nut to see.

Such a great comeback. I liked Echoes, Silence Patience, Grace - but Wasting Light is easily in their top 3 albums along with the debut and TCATS.

Bumping. They are the musical guests for Late Show with David Letterman, for a whole week, where they will be performing covers, I think, with various musical guests. Here was yesterday's video. They played War Pigs with Zac Brown.

He's a very overrated drummer.
I've always appreciated his style, he's extremely solid and plays so freaking hard. I suppose it is quite far removed from Ward's jazzy style... fair enough.
On second listen Grohl's vocals are pretty average too haha. Still, looking forward to the rest of the week's performances.
-
Dave is the best drummer out of the two and the best vocalist obviously.
-
I saw Letterman last night....glad I did otherwise I would have missed Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters.
Zac Brown who I hadn't heard much of before was great, he sounded much better that Dave but still looking forward to the new release.
-
I hope Dave isn't losing his voice.
-
I don't think War Pigs was the best cover choice for Dave's voice. I thought he did well in this cover though.

He's a very overrated drummer.
I would say they're about even, and even give Hawkins an edge. Grohl is really good, but he's not very versatile. He plays loud rock, and that's about it. Hawkins has got more in his arsenal.
Also, I wouldn't call him overrated. He's about where he should be.
-
I've never seen Hawkins particularly praised as a drummer so I'm not sure where overrated comes from. He's perfect for Foos; he can really rock out but he's also really good at keeping a tight groove. I think he's a lot more interesting than Grohl.
-
Off topic but......I went on fb today at work and FF announced they're playing The Cubby Bear on friday in Chicago (where I live) and that tickets go on sale at 10 (it was already 11:30). Tickets sold out in about 3 minutes :lol
For those who don't know, The Cubby Bear is in Wrigleyville where the Cubs play and it's a small club that only holds about 200 people tops.
Pretty crazy that they'd play a tiny club at last minute. But I guess the venue will be featured in the first episode of the HBO series, as it was the place where Grohl saw his first rock show. Thought it was interesting.
-
Something From Nothing is out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3B0Vx_yQgo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3B0Vx_yQgo)
Thoughts? It's really different from the rest of Foo, IMO, the structure at least. Will have to listen to it a few other times in order to say yay or nay. But so far :tup
-
I dig it a ton, love the musical nods to Holy Diver as well!
-
I dig it a ton, love the musical nods to Holy Diver as well!
Were they suppose to rip off the Holy Diver riff? I'm guessing so cause we all know Dave is a huge Dio fan.
It's an okay song, builds nicely.
-
So..... is taking a famous part from classic songs and putting it in each new song on the album what Dave was talking about when he said it would be recorded different from any other album in history? Is that why they're doing covers all week on DLS?
Song is ok but I expected more. I have high hopes for the new album still. :tup
-
Song is ok but I expected more. I have high hopes for the new album still. :tup
Myeah. That didn't hit me like Rope did when it came out before Wasting Light. I dunno if the Dio thing was on purpose but it's kind of a stock riff, I don't think it works very well in this song.
-
Just heard it on the ride home and thought it was pretty great. Nothing hard hitting, but a nice change of pace nonetheless.
-
Well, after a couple of listens, it's pretty good. I think I like it better than Rope, if this is a 1st single. They opted to not do a standard song structure and I think it worked out all right. It was building up pretty well to that climax at the end I think.
-
I find the guitars in the "Dio" riff sound very sterile and processed. They don't have the balls that they should have. Overall a pretty Meh song, and I'm a long-time fan. Hopefully the album is better.
-
guys, do you know by any chance a streaming link for the show? I live in Italy and there's no way to watch it here.
-
Hmm I'm not floored by the song (Something From Nothing) but I'm sure it will grow on me.
-
Haven't heard the new tracks yet but for any Australian fans Sonic Highway will be shown on Saturdays at 4.30pm on GO! (Free to air channel) and repeated again on Channel 9 Wednesday at Midnight....That will teach me not to read to Sat. paper until Sun. night!

-
I hope the documentary comes out on DVD along with the album for those of us who can't get to see it...
It would kinda make no sense to release the music without the film about making it. . .
But we'll see.
-
It was fun watching the first episode. Dave is making a name for himself as a Roc Doc director for sure.
-
The next song is out. The Feast and the Famine. A bit more energetic than the other song.

Although some will complain it sounds cut and paste Foo, I MUCH prefer this song to "Something From Nothing" so far. Not that I disliked SFN, it still just feels so disjointed to me. Haven't watched any of the series at this point, but am definitely interested and listening to the music as it goes.
-
I didn't hear a big similarity between The Feast and The Famine and White Limo like someone says on youtube, nor with Disenchanted Lullaby..
-
The songs keep rolling. This one released in Nashville. I believe Zac Brown does some back-up vocals. I like it. Very laid-back and, probably, the bridge is the best out of the three so far.

I'm a relatively new convert to Foo Fighters (I have a buddy who is a die-hard fan who has preached them to me for years), but I've always been familiar with them, and I have a lot of respect for Dave Grohl.
I watched the first episode of Sonic Highways on HBO, and I loved the song Something From Nothing.
Also, the piece on 60 Minutes last week was really good as well.
-
I've watched two episodes of Sonic Highways, but I'm not that impressed. It's been way too much focus on punk rock for my taste (a genre I don't like). Hopefully the other episodes will be better.
-
^^ I highly the next episode is going to be about Punk Rock since it's going to be in Nashville, and the song that they created is so laid back.
-
Just announced an Australian tour....tickets go on presale Nov 11
-
I saw the Nashville episode. It was fun, and no punk in sight lol.
I also really liked that song "Congregation" and I'm going to try to talk to our Music Minister at church about our band doing it. Not sure if it will work lol
-

Yeah, best episode yet (despite the country music :lol ). And Congregation is the best song they've released so far from the album.
-
I like a bit of country music. Way more than that god awful punk from last week :puke:
I hate punk.

The internet has ruined music in a lot of ways.

I don't really think it's ruined it at all, if anything made it better or at least more accessible.(coming from somebody who still prefers to buy vinyl)

While I don't want to open this can of worms, I agree. It is especially good for smaller artists, ie. Devin Townsend.

It just means that every Tom Dick & Harry can release their album on line and there is so much over saturation it's almost impossible to stand out.
-
I like that, sure you might have to sift through more, but there's now so much more out there that didn't get unjustly axed by a label with over controlling hands
-
Agreed. So much good music out there, it's awesome.
-
The songs keep piling up. I don't mind it. I'm still buying that album at Best Buy on Monday?. This one was recorded in Austin. Reminds me of something from There's Nothing Left to Lose.

I like a bit of country music. Way more than that god awful punk from last week :puke:

Hmm they have now released four songs even before the album is out, that's half the album. Don't know how I feel about that.
The songs are great though :tup

It's ok to like whatever you want to like. I mean, I find it weird enough to say that you "hate" an entire genre of music in the first place, but when you then really like a band within that genre it doesn't really make sense to me.
And when I say "you", I mean a lot of people, not just you.
-
Green Day may not be punk now, but only because they are successful and have made lots of money from their music, which is kind of anti-punk.
But I remember when they debuted, and they were billed as a punk band. And I don't follow them (I don't care for them), but from what bits I have heard over the years, I can't tell that they have changed their style all that much, aside from that dreadful acoustic song that gets played everywhere.

I just always saw Green Day as a *lot* more melodic that that whole scene and with actual songs and singing rather than just 240 bpm shouting with buzzsaw guitars.
-
Punk has a huge range and I still feel that Green Day falls into that category. Sure their music has become more pop as of late, but early stuff was most definitely a form of punk. Just look at the sub categories on Wiki lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_rock_subgenres

Wtf, what kind of punk bands have you heard?
-
You're saying there's not a whole scene of punk bands like that ? :P
Basically almost every band in the second episode of Sonic Highways...
-
Most punk (at least classic punk, back in the day - I don't know anything about modern punk, if there is such a thing) is really loud, really fast, and mostly played by people who aren't that good at playing their instruments. And they are mad as hell about something.
-
Yes thats the stuff I can't listen to.
-
Same here.
I mean, I can appreciate what they are trying to do, on an intellectual level. But I never want to listen to that shit.

Punk has been dead for 30 years [/punk elitist]. :P
There's lots of different punk out there that isn't just buzzsaw guitars and shouting. There're ska bands, the entire pop punk genre (of which Green Day and The Offspring are members... now), and even older bands like the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and the Clash have a lot of melody in their songs.

Well yeah that was how punk started - a movement based on the notion that anyone can just pick up an instrument and play it. Most of that stuff I've heard hasn't really done anything for me.
But that was literally decades ago. Punk now covers all sorts of different styles and genres, and absolutely includes Green Day. It's like saying you hate metal music purely based on Cannibal Corpse (apologies to any CC fans).

As a Cannibal Corpse fan, I've never been more insulted in my ENTIRE life!!!!!!1!! :P

I find Cannibal Corpse hilarious. I can't take them seriously at all.

I was including Green Day as punk.
I'm kind of surprised that ska is included as punk, because what I know of each seems fundamentally at odds with each other.
And Cannibal Corpse is awful.
-
Yeah ska is more akin to reggae really, I think what TKIC was referring to was ska punk which is a sort of fusion of the two (punk rock, usually fairly poppy, with a brass section).

Yep, that's what I meant. Bands like Less Than Jake or Real Big Fish.
-
I need to clarify in this topic that Cannibal Corpse is awesome. Okay, that's all.
-
Saw the fourth episode of Sonic Highways. This time it was in Austin, which really is a weird town. Cool stuff, and the new song was great. :tup
-
As I predicted, another great album from them. Congregation is my favourite track right now :metal
-
Congregation is one of the best songs I've heard this year from anyone.
-
Enjoyed the album. I digged Something from Nothing, Congregation, In The Clear, What Did I Do? / God As My Witness, and I Am The River. That said, it's definitely a grower of an album and those that loved Wasting Light may not like this album as easily as that one.
-
Wasting Light is my second favorite album of the past 20 years after Systematic Chaos by Dream Theater.
-
Wish there were a couple more like Feast and the Famine.
-
To be honest I found this album a disappointment compared to Wasting Light.

Oh and I get that and your statement still rings true. Wasting Light was a masterpiece in my eyes.
-
It's not as great as Wasting Light, but still a great album for sure. No disappointments here.
-
I think it's a fantastic album, and the series on HBO has been a joy.
-
I love the joy of the band members talking about influences. We forget that they were us at some point pining to be or admiring a musician.
Then the joy of certain recordin studios.

Its funny how this actually works to make average albums seem a little better. I know it kinda made me rethink my stance on St Anger after I watched the Metallica documentary behind the making of it. Everyone should make a documentary for their albums now so people have more of an attachment to them, ka-ching.
Haven't heard new foos yet but I'm sure there'll be one or two gooduns on there.

What Did I Do?/God As My Witness is currently my favorite track right now. I just love how random and melodic it is. Something From Nothing, and Congregation are great too.

I like all of those three, and I Am A River, with Congregation being the standout for me. The other four are good songs too, but there is a clear separation between top four and bottom four IMHO.

Congregation could be Song Of The Year for me.

Yeah, Dave screaming I Am A River a lot may be a bit overbearing, but I really did like the 2nd-half of the song especially with the strings coming in and building this sort of climax to the song. The album keeps getting better and better as I listen to it on the drive to school.
Also, hey mikemangioy, how do you get that title,"DT fanboy, preacher of the Grohl"?
-
So I bought " Sonic Highways " from iTunes as I found the CD packaging to be severely lacking.
I didn't wanna pay an extra £1 for basically a piece of card folded in half to protect the CD.

That's the custom title. Go on profile settings, you should have it there.

Caught the finale of Sonic Highways. Great ending to a great show.
-
And I just started watching the series. :corn
-
Have to say I really enjoyed this series. Big props to Foo Fighters and the people behind the show for making this.
-
Apparently Grohl already has an idea for the next album, which he said will be something no one has ever done before, but it will be about 3 years away.

Too bad man, yea I actually thought it was sold out but I found some pretty good seats, wanted a floor ticket but they were sold out though.

New album is good despite a few songs sounding similar.
My Ranking after a few listens :
1. Foo Fighters
2. The Colour And The Shape
3. Wasting Light
4. Sonic Highways
5. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
6. Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace
7. In Your Honour
8. One By One
I wonder how Dave feels about In Your Honour these days after claiming at the time he wanted it to be the definitive Foos album.
-
Can't really rate the albums to be honest. There's good songs on all their albums although TCATS and WL holds a special place especially TCATS. Amazing album and probably my favourite rock album by any band ever. Every song is interesting and diffrent and after all these years it's still holds up nicely. Monkey Wrench gets my blood pumping every time, ohh man I love it!!
The album also brings back alot of memories and because it's been with me for atleast 15 years it could easily be the soundtrack of my life. :)
It would look something like this:
1. The Colour And The Shape
2. Wasting Light
3. In Your Honour
4. Sonic Highways
5. Foo Fighters
6. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
7. Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace
8. One By One
-
One of my albums is called :
"The Calm And The Storm"
So when I see TCATS I can't help but think of my album too :P
-
Y'all have Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace waaaaaay too low haha.
-
1. Wasting Light
2. The Color and the Shape
3. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
4. One by One
5. Sonic Highways
6. Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace
7. In Your Honor
8. Foo Fighters

8. Foo Fighters
:omg:
-
I agree with Rich. The debut album is the weakest.
-
Not with One By One in the list.
-
That is a hair above for me.
-
I agree with Rich. The debut album is the weakest.
Yeah, easily.
-
This was really hard, but here goes:
1. The Colour And The Shape
2. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
3. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
4. Sonic Highways
5. Wasting Light
6. Foo Fighters
7. In Your Honor
8. One By One
But, Honestly......3-6 could all be swapped in any order, they're all tied for me.
-
1. In Your Honor Fave all time track is Resolve
2. Wasting Light
3. The Colour and the shape
4. Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace
5. One by One
6. There is Nothing left to lose
7. Sonic Highways .... Need to listen to it more, I love the concept, the series was outstanding, especially 'in the clear'
8. Foo Fighters
-
I still need to listen to the self-title in whole and may need to re-listen to The Colour and the Shape, but here's my album rankings so far.
1. Wasting Light
2. There Is Nothing Left to Lose
3. Sonic Highways
4. In Your Honor
5. Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace
6. One By One
-
1: There Is Nothing Left to Lose
2: TCATS
3: Wasting Light
4: Sonic Highways
5: Foo Fighters
6: In Your Honor
7: Echoes Silence Patience Grace
8: One By One
-
Not sure what my exact order would be, but for me, The Colour and the Shape, One By One, and Wasting Light would be competing for the top spot.
I like Sonic Highways quite a bit, but it hasn't clicked with me yet the way Wasting Light did.
Echoes Silence Patience and Grace has some good songs, but it's probably my least favorite of theirs.
-
Y'all are insane :lol
-
LOL, I'm a big fan of One By One. Something about it's darker tone compared to most of the discography.
-
One by One is great. The first Foos album I bought. Its definitely a grower not a shower.
-
It is probably their first album I purchased (I think) ...Times Like These still one of their all time best tracks....in my opinion.
-
You may not believe me :p but i've been a Foos fan since the first album.
I remember telling my friend way back in 1994 / 1995 that Dave Grohl had formed a new band called " Foo Fighters " and they were going to be massive.
Those first two albums blew me away pretty much but the 3rd album only revealed itself in retrospect . It was a bit soft for me at the time.
After that they were pretty much a singles band up until ESPG which I thought was a decent return to form then Wasting Light came out :o
-
I became a fan around the time of There Is Nothing Left To Lose. They had brilliant singles off that album, and then I heard Monkey Wrench from the previous one and it sealed the deal.
-
Oddly enough, I almost wrote them off back in 2012 when I heard "These Days" on the radio, and I was like, "Hmmm, maybe this band may not be for me if this is their latest offering."
Suddenly, when I heard "Walk" on the radio, and just really loved the upbeat energy to it. Then, I saw the music video, and heard that the WWE used it for a tribute video for retired superstar, Edge, at his request, for their Hall of Fame which sealed the deal for me.
Then I watched their proshot set in Wembley Stadium and that made them a fave five band to me.
-
I do remember seeing Big Me all over MTV when I was a kid but I would've been 4 when that album was out.
I kinda have a casual relationship with the Foos, I enjoy their music but I'm not a diehard by any means. They seem to be some kinda go-to band for the bandwagon jumper, at least over here - for the guys who think Dave Grohl is a god and is the only one doing rock and roll for reals these days.
I feel like I'm waiting for them to do something new. Like, really new, not 'new because no-ones done it this way for 25 years' new. Which is bullshit anyway, plenty of bands were still recording to tape when the Foos decided the were retro-awesome did the whole Wasting Light thing.
/rant. Good band tho.
-
One by One is great. The first Foos album I bought. Its definitely a grower not a shower.
Absolutely. I tend to be a fan of music that grows on me more than immediate impact for some reason. It's important to have those immediate impact type songs though and Foo does both pretty damn well. This album for the most part has lots of songs that have lots of depth and as I mentioned before a darkness to them (especially in comparison to the rest of the discography). One By One is much, much better than the majority ranks it in their catalog IMO.
-
One week I listened to an entire Foos album every day.
Still love the first two . The third was a nice surprise. Much better than I remember. Echoes...held up pretty well. In Your Honour sounded as forced as I remember it
but One By One was definitely the worst one for me.

Man, anything with Dave Grohl and Corey Taylor, together, should be good. I loved From Can to Can't that they did on the Sound City Soundtrack. That song got me into Stone Sour.
-
Well, very late to post this, but I got a very great Christmas present last week. I got tickets to see Foo Fighters at the Forum in LA in September. Yes, they are nosebleed seats, but I am very excited for this.
-
A bit late for the ranking stuff but
1.Wasting Light
2.The Color And The Shape
3.In Your Honor
4.Sonic Highways
5.Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
6.There's Nothing Left To Lose
7.Foo Fighters
8.One By One

Just got Sonic Highways, I was hoping there would be more of an influence from each city they recorded in. It just sounds like a good FF album they could have recorded anywhere. The city-by-city thing doesn't seem to affect the final product.
-
I think the only aspect of the city-by-city thing was pretty much from a lyrical sense. From what I've heard, Dave pretty much interview people, for the TV series, that came from these cities and gain some inspiration to write the lyrics on certain things on that city. For example, Something From Nothing was about a city on fire that managed to rebound itself back up (Chicago). Congregation talked about gathering people in a church and being inspired to sing where Nashville happened to be a good source of that. I don't know about the other locations though.
That said, when I heard about this idea, I did kinda hope to hear some certain aspects, instrumentally, that was really specialized in that particular city. Oh well. It's still an ok album. Still one of my faves from 2014.
-
I'm sure that all songs had unique sonic characteristics created by the different studios before they were overprocessed during mixing and butchered by excessive dynamic range compression.

Kinda confirms a lot of people's suspicions that the last album was thrown together and they actually really focussed on the documentary.
After Wasting Light - it was a huge drop off in quality.

Yea that was crazy! Lots of confusion because I didn't see the fall or anything but people started running around on stage and the band kept on playing but after a while stopped when they realised what happend. Suddenly you hear Dave go:
"I love you all but I think I broke my leg" and on screen you see him laying on the floor with a mike talking. Crazy!
He told everyone they will be back! The rest of the band jammed a few covers and 15-20mins later they carry Dave out on stage and place him in a chair with his foot resting on a stool and they went on to play for 2+ hours with a short break when Dave went backstage to get his leg in a cast.
Such a crazy yet amazing thing to witness. They played their ass of for the rest of the show! My respect for Dave went up the roof!!

When he said "I'm so sorry, i'm so sorry" I have to say I felt a bit emotional NOT because for what happend to him but because he genuinely felt ashamed over it. I'm mean shit happens and this could have happend to anyone and all that but still there's 50000+ paying costumers and to abort a show after two songs is pretty fucking brutal for any artists that basically LIVES to perform on stage. I could pretty much feel the tension in the air. I'm ashamed to say it but their where alot of people that left the arena, especially when he went backstage to cast his leg. Stupid fucking people right but that's pretty disheartening for any artists to see. When the reast of the band started to play covers Taylor Hawkins looked like he was about to cry and was acting confused mostly because he was worried about Dave but also about what to communicate to the audience. It was pretty tense to say the least.
Luckily it all turned around to be the greatest concert experience of my life, period!! No words can describe the feedback Dave and the band got from the audience towards the end of the show, really magical!

Yes, Dave is the man!

Good guy Dave strikes again!

He's definitely having fun with it. I don't see a problem with it.
I didn't mean it in a bad way.

Yes, that was fantastic.

Well, I'm heading to the concert at the Forum in Inglewood, California tomorrow. To prepare for it, I decided to listen to their whole discography and all 8 albums in the last few weeks. One thing I've observed, Sonic Highways is still a pretty darn solid album, and holds up well almost a year that it's out. I do not think there's actually a bad song on it, whilst One By One, In Your Honor, and especially Echos, Silence, Patience, and Grace had some songs that are so forgettable, I can't even remember the song names.
Since, this is the DT forum and we all love list rankings, and I've really got a great grasp and listen to all of their albums, in recent times, here's mine on their discography.
1. Wasting Light
2. There is Nothing Left To Lose
3. Sonic Highways
4. Foo Fighters
5. The Colour and the Shape
6. In Your Honor
7. Echos, Silence, Patience, and Grace
8. One By One

1. Foo Fighters / The Colour And The Shape

4. Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace
5. Sonic Highways.
6. In Your Honour
7. One By One

Back from the Foo Fighters concert. Uhhh, It was probably, in me going to four concerts overall, the best concert I have ever been to. I'll say more detail about it in a couple of hours later.

Hours later. As I stated, that was probably the best concert I have ever been to. Had a great view of the stage, even though, I was in like the 200s section of the arena. The sound was good enough. The crowd was good. In previous concerts, I've been to, I barely heard any audible crowd noise, could be due to my hearing or whatever aspects, but for the most part, at the Foo Fighters show, the crowd was really audible at the right time and they reacted really well and loudly during My Hero and Best Of You, and rightly so.
One of my favorite parts about it was that when Dave was doing the band intros and they do snippets of classic songs and they went into Tom Sawyer, and then, really out of nowhere, Jack Black came out and sang the 1st verse of Tom Sawyer, well enough, walked on the catwalk, went off the catwalk, and just left. Dave, then jokely stated, that he thinks Jack Black was reenacting Dave's leg accident there.
The 2.5 hours set just went by pretty fast and I knew that the band was not really going to pull into any major surprises, but they just played really well and that even though I heard these songs and watch proshots of these big songs so many times, it's still really enjoyable to see/hear it, gets amplified a lot especially in person.
While certain things kinda dragged down a bit like during the bridge of Outside, and during the songs where they had Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac come out, it still made sense after going through stuff like My Hero, the White Limo/Arlandria one-two punch, and Best of You where the crowd needed a bit of a breather there.
Overall, I was a happy camper and was really glad I came. Honestly, people may say whatever they want about the Foo Fighters, but in my eyes, that show was probably how a rock show done right should be.
-
I don't get the hate for FF. I mean sure - some of the songs are a bit middle of the road but they're a fun, down to earth group of guys with a very charismatic , funny frontman who are
obviously all having a great time. They don't do that stupid " everyone scowls and does the middle finger " in photoshoots. They clearly love their job / life.

:tup Glad you enjoyed it! Saw them in Gothenburg which of course was an epic night, his accident made it even more special. One of the weirdest and most heartwarming concert i've ever been to.

So anyone know what this might be about?
https://lobby.foofighters.com/
-
I wanna say a live album of some sort or some shit, although I could easily see them picking up the pace with releasing albums, doing that old school thing where bands used to release albums a lot faster.
-
It has to be better than Sonic Highways if it's a new album.
That was such a let down. Especially since Wasting Light was so good.
Sonic Highways was like B sides from "Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace" . .
If they're just gonna crap out middle of the road radio friendly diet-rock albums from here on - i'm done.
-
It'll be an announcement for their new album, which is a double disc rock opera about the fight between a powerful empire and a group of rebels. It will be called "The Amazening".
-

For me, the two biggest problems with Sonic Highways were definitely;
1) It was the follow-up to Wasting Light, and Wasting Light was fantastic.
2) With the premise and the HBO miniseries and the way they promoted it and so forth, they hyped the hell out of it, and then it ended up being a pretty standard Foo record.
I thought it was a perfectly fine album, but they set the bar for it almost impossibly high.
-
What TL said. Also Foo still puts on a one of a kind show, and as far as I'm concerned, they can shit out standard Foo Fighter records, they'll still bring it live and even if it's standard Foo, standard Foo is still good stuff.
Sonic Highways certainly wasn't their best, but I found it quite enjoyable anyways.
-
I thought Sonic Highways was fantastic.
-
Of the handful of people I know who like the Foo Fighters a lot, not a single one has mentioned this album to me, outside of my brother telling me at the time that it had just came out. He hasn't mentioned it since, and I know he would have if he thought it was really good, and my two cousins, both of whom are big fans, have not said a thing about it, and neither went and saw them when they came here over the summer. Those are not good signs, and make me feel not bad about skipping this one.
-
Album's okay. Just seemed like the documentary was the focus of that whole project, while the album was just kind of the result of it.
-
Album's okay. Just seemed like the documentary was the focus of that whole project, while the album was just kind of the result of it.
This I agree with. The album was a companion to the documentary.
But it is still an album with plenty of really good music on it. Not their best, by any means, but I really like it a lot.
-
The album is good, just not as great as Wasting Light before it. Congregation is a Top 10 Foo Fighters song for me though.
-
I think one issue with the promotion of Sonic Highways was how much they hyped up each song being inspired by the music scene in a different city. They had people expecting a wide variety of styles, or at least influence from various styles. Then, the songs all turned out to be very much in the style of the Foo Fighters, with just the lyrics influenced by their visits to the various cities.
It wasn't necessarily a problem, but they way they talked about it before had lead people to think it was going to be something very different from what it ended up being.
-
The countdown finally finished.
It's a free EP dedicated to the victims of the attacks in Paris
https://www.saintceciliaep.com/
-
Yes and it's a pretty rocking EP.
I love when Dave remembers that Foo Fighters are a rock band.
Sonic Highways is 8 songs. This is 5.
You could make a pretty decent 13 track album with those two releases.
-
Well, this is indeed a nice surprise to hear. It's a decent EP. Sean and Savior Breath seemed a bit too short to get itself going. However, Iron Rooster and The Neverending Sigh is good stuff. Also, free stuff is free stuff, and when not being forced-fed it, it is all good.
-
St. Cecilia is definitely a solid release, and I had no idea it was coming, so it was a nice little surprise.
-
Fuck, for free?
I'm not below free trash, I'll download it right away. :tup
-
The EP reminds me of the debut album.
-
This is a really cool surprise.
Just finished listening through it for the first time. I'm really digging it. The Neverending Sigh is especially good.
-
There's a bit in "Sean" after the first wacky riff where Dave sings a line with the exact same delivery as " Is There Anybody There? " from Feast & Famine.
-
There's a bit in "Sean" after the first wacky riff where Dave sings a line with the exact same delivery as " Is There Anybody There? " from Feast & Famine.
Noticed that too. Good to know it wasn't just me. :lol
Other than that moment, I've listened to this thing a bunch of times now. It's really good.
-
Love the riff at 0:50 in Sean.
-
Any particular reason why Sonic Highways seems to have met such lukewarm reception? I have only heard 3 tracks from it, I am a River, Congregation and The Feast and the Famine, but those 3 are IMO on par with, or better than anything else I've heard from them. Is the album just uneven?
-

It's too short. Some of the songs sound the same. It's not as good as Wasting Light. It's back to them being a MOR rock n roll band. When they're actually a great heavy rock band.
Anyway - BIG FOOS ANNOUNCEMENT TONIGHT !
Wonder what it could be. Probably another hiatus. Rumours are that Dave is doing a solo album. Breaking up ? Pat quitting again ?
I'm fine with whatever it is, I've been a fan since the debut and wouldn't consider myself a massive fan anymore.
-
The video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rW1wuNyDKg&feature=youtu.be
-
I do not know where the bloody all of these rumors that they are "breaking up" came from in the first place. Also, Nick Lachey is still around?
-
i was really hoping for a hiatus so there could be another them crooked vultures album.
-
Lachey was by far the best part of that video. :lol
-
Very lukewarm on the Foo Fighters. I get it, Dave Grohl, jack of all trades, integrity, Nirvana, blah blah blah, but it just all sounds so generic and bland to me. I'm not a huge fan of "screaming", so a lot of his vocals go right by me...
I could listen to My Hero all day long, though, Everlong is undeniably a great, great song, and I like Learn To Fly. I do like Dave as a drummer, too.
-
i was really hoping for a hiatus so there could be another them crooked vultures album.
Honestly, I was kinda thinking the same thing, haha.
-
Haven't listened to much of their music, but I think "Halo"/"Have It All"/"Disenchanted Lullaby" from 1x1 and "The Deepest Blues Are Back" from IYH are excellent songs to me.
-
BUMPPPPPP!!!!!!
Just out of interest I looked up Foo Fighters Discography on Wikipedia and it seems that over time the chart positions have gone up and up but the album sales have gone steadily downwards.
-
Thats more indicative of the music industry as a whole. The increase of music sales through iTunes or other download options has dramatically dropped album sales.
https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/7430863/2016-soundscan-nielsen-music-mid-year-album-sales-sink-streaming-growth
-
I don't know what fans think of it, but one song I really like is New Way Home. Those final minutes are really great, and I know the whole "build from quiet and soft whispers to loud and screaming" is something Foo Fighters have done a lot, but this song seems like one of the best executions of that formula.
I FELT LIKE THIS ON MY WAY HOME
I'M NOT SCARED
-
Controversial.
I'd put Foos first three albums over Nirvana's first three albums.
Foo Fighters and There Is Nothing Left To Lose are better than Bleach and In Utero respectively.
-
Agreed.
-
Plus add in Wasting Light and the Foos beat Nirvana hands down.
-
Foo Fighters / Rick James mash-up. Genius
https://youtu.be/ZCuXMiu2184
-
haha great ;D
-
So The Foos played a not so secret show in Somerset, England last night and streamed it on YouTube.
Quite a varied setlist. Lots off the debut. Wattershed ! Big Me ! This Is A Call !!
Also Sean from St. Cecilia from the recent EP.
Plus a couple of new snippets. Which sounded a lot more rocking than Sonic Highways. Hopefully back to Wasting Light levels.
Sonic Highways was ok but man was it MOR plodding. I thought they were onto a good thing after Wasting Light was so good...
St. Cecilia was a bit better.
Oh and they're headlining Glastonbury on Jun 24. Pyramid Stage.
Album Ranking as i'm here...
1. The Colour & The Shape
2. Wasting Light
3. Foo Fighters
4. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
5. Echoes, Silence, Patience Grace
( St. Cecilia )
6. In Your Honour
7. Sonic Highways
8. One By One.
-
There Is Nothing Left To Lose
Colour and the Shape
Wasting Light
Foo Fighters
In Your Honor
Echoe's Silence Patience Grace
Sonic Highways
One By One
Never listened to St Cecilia. My interest in the Foos has waned since Wasting Light and Sonic Highways was alright but it didn't really resonate.
-
Yeah Sonic Highways was a huge step down.
It was disappointing as an album and because Dave Grohl is capable of so much better.
It's like they made the doc and all the songs were an afterthought.
-
I would've liked to have seen them capture the musical styles of the cities they were in more. Even Feast and the Famine seemed like faux punk, despite Grohl having a lot of background in punk rock. The guest musicians were also underutilized.
I will say when Sonic Highways is good it's among the best they've ever done. Congregation, What Did I Do/God As My Witness, and In the Clear are great tunes. I can live without everything else.

New song " Run "...
You've got to learn to walk again before you can Run, Dave :neverusethis:
-
I'm really liking the new song! :tup It's not ground breaking, but the Foo Fighters somehow manage to retain their sound every time yet keep it fresh. Very cool tune :)
-
Pretty cool song and fun video.
-
I'm not saying " boo hoo my fave rock band have gone soft " - but Foo Fighters doing "heavy" nowadays is nowhere near as blustery as on their 2nd album.
Apart from maybe " All My Life " and some of Wasting Light - they've never matched anything from Colour & The Shape in terms of heaviness.
I'm not after an album of White Limo and Weenie Beenie. But one or two songs like Wind Up would be nice again.
-
I'm warming to the new song. It didn't immediately hook me the way something like Bridges Burning did, but it's pretty good.
They definitely haven't fallen into any of the pits that a lot of bands do these days, which I'm always worried about whenever I hear a new song from a band I like these days. Luckily, the Foo Fighters are still staying true to themselves. If anything, by the end of the track, it almost feels like a statement that they're going to continue to do just that.
It'll be interesting to see what the rest of the album is like. Parts of this song felt like a departure from their style, while still feeling like them, so I'm excited.
-
New song is solid, but given their samey style, my interest level isn't that high with them. Gimme The Colour and the Shape, Wasted Light and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, and that is more than enough for me to get my FF fix.
-
So we have 'Walk' and now we have 'Run'.
Is there gonna be a 'Jog' at some point to complete a trilogy?
-
Well they're learning to fly ...
-
If their new album isn't recorded at 606 then something is wrong.
They made such a fuss about the Sound City Neve Board - buying it - installing it in 606 - making a Sound City album with it and even a movie...
But since then not one Foo Fighters album has been made with it.
Wasting Light was in Dave's house and Sonic Highways was in 8 different studios around the US.
Even St. Cecilia was only partially tracked in 606.

Finally gonna get a chance to see these guys live later this year. Looking forward to it! :tup

I'd be very interested if they ever release 'Prance' or 'Frolick'

Surprised no one's talking about the Glasto set. I watched the start of it, and it was just shot after shot after shot of unbridled raw primeval energy that only rock can provide.

I watched it, and it was excellent. I'm not the biggest FF fan, but the band was very tight, and seemed to be loving every minute of it. Great set list, and the Queen cover was a fun bonus.
Dave had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. I can't believe that guy shows no sign of nerves whatsoever. The "10 more songs" thing was very funny, and was even better when the crowd started counting down, "9 more songs..". :lol
Another highlight was Dave saying, mid-song, "I see a naked guy!". Cue the BBC camera panning round to the naked guy sitting on his friend's shoulders, and quickly cutting away..
Compare that to Ed Sheeran headlining on the Sunday night. I changed the channel after 10 minutes.

Not many bands could pull that off without it being totally awful, but the Foo Fighters managed to do it. I don't listen to them that much anymore, but David Grohl is such a rock star. :metal

Just discovered Dave's cover of the 80's song Kids In America. Unfortunately it's demo quality and the vocals aren't the best. That could be a great song if better produced.
-
So I finally decided to go see foo fighters yesterday and man that was worth every penny.
-
I saw the boys at Wrigley Field last week and, just....wow. Haven’t seen em in 10 years and haven’t even listened to them in quite a while either, but this concert reaffirmed why they’re so great to me and I’ve been running through their catalog on loop ever since. Also CaG has grown on me a shit ton after not liking it at all, so that’s another plus!
-

Get rid of There Is Nothing Left to Lose and put in Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, and that is my list.
-
I haven't heard all their albums but I think The Colour and the Shape is up there (probably their most classic?) but I would also give a shout to Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace as maybe my personal favorite. That album just has some really nice tunes on it. "Summer's End" is a bit of a personal favorite.
-
1. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
2. The Colour And The Shape
3. Wasting Light
-
I find 99% of their material to be firmly in the "meh" category, but Have It All is a great song.
-
ALRIGHT YOU RANKERS
1. The Colour And The Shape
2. Foo Fighters
3. Wasting Light
- St. Cecilia -
4. Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace
5. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
6. In Your Honour
7. Sonic Highways
8. One By One
9. Concrete And Gold.
Not only is Concrete and Gold their worst album BY A MILE. It's also one of the worst rock albums i've ever heard. I genuinely think it's unlistenable and much worse than St . Anger.
I was SO disappointed. Especially since RUN ( funny since the main riff was like Pantera's Walk played faster ) - was such a great single.
Terrible terrible album.

I think it is at least better than One By One, In Your Honor and Sonic Highways. I would probably put it above the self titled too, which you put as second, but apart first three tracks I can't recall much of the self titled, so for that one I can't judge.
-
I got big into this band for a while in the mid to late 00's, but they kind of fell off the radar for me after Wasting Light, which I really liked. I don't think I've heard anything from their last two albums.
-

I hated Concrete And Gold but it did make Sonic Highways sound a lot better - which is itself really radio friendly middle of the road rock. Nothing special at all. But at least the production is stellar.
C & G was produced by a pop music producer who Grohl admitted * never produced a rock album before *. And it shows.
Wasting Light is indeed their last great album - and that was nearly 10 years ago.
The other thing that annoys me about FF is that every thing they do now has to be a gimmick.
When was the last time they just went in a studio and recorded an album without it being LOOK WHAT WE DID ?!
One By One maybe ?!
-
Oh man I had concrete and gold on my list to listen to next. I can't wait to hear what it's all about.

I'm with you on most of that, at least as regards the band (I'm not intimate with all the music; the only thing I have from them that I listen to with any regularity is Medium Rare and Skin And Bones. They are a "Greatest Hits" band for me.)
I SHOULD by all rights love Dave Grohl; he's a kind of Portnoy in a sense - I've actually called him the "Phil Collins of the 2010's" - and his love for the music is evident. But there's something about him that FOR ME betrays that "aw shucks, I'm just a regular guy doin' my thing" schtick. I can't name specific things right now, because I'm not close enough to it, but it strikes me that if he was all that and a bag of chips, things would look different than they do.
-
While they dabbled with some acoustic stuff on In Your Honor and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, you pretty much always know what you're going to get from this band and they rarely stray too far from their normal sound and style. I have said it before and I will say it again: they are the modern day AC/DC. (that is not meant to be a criticism)
-
Hot take: Wasting Light is the last great ROCK album to hit #1.
-
When was the last time they just went in a studio and recorded an album without it being LOOK WHAT WE DID ?!
One By One maybe ?!
Hasn't that been the case for almost all of the albums?
Self-Titled: Dave Grohl plays all of the instruments
The Colour and the Shape: First album recorded as a band
There Is Nothing Left to Lose: Album recorded in Dave's hometown in VA and only as a 3-piece.
One by One: Maybe that's the only one with no big gimmick
In Your Honor: Double-album: Half electric, half acoustic.
Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace: I don't think there is a gimmick, but mainly they experimented more with blending acoustics with the heavy stuff in the same song.
Wasting Light: Recorded in analog and in Dave's house in LA.
Sonic Highways: Recorded in eight different cities in the States
Concrete And Gold: Album produced by a pop producer.
I wasn't too impressed with Concrete and Gold. Run was very good as a lead single, but I didn't like The Sky is a Neighborhood. Honestly, I had very little desire to relisten to it in full again unlike Wasting Light, There is Nothing Left to Lose, and even Sonic Highways where I didn't feel like it's a drag listening to those albums in full.

I hated C&G when it came out. Spinned it maybe twice and that was it. But very slowly, random riffs and songs started to pop up in my memory and it grew on me. Definitely a slow burner and I’d rank it probably in the middle. Dirty Water and Arrows are my favs from it.
-
I am f---ing SHOCKED that literally NOBODY else has ever mentioned how APPALLING it sounds..
I find " La De Daa " Literally unlistenable.
It sounds like they recorded it on a boom box in a warehouse.
It's dreadful.
---
In My opinion it makes Saint Anger sound like The Black Album.
-
New album is on the way, 'Medicine At Midnight'. Coming some time next year.
https://www.amazon.com/Medicine-At-Midnight-Foo-Fighters/dp/B08MVZFBFN?tag=ultimategui0f-20
We also have a brand new single from the upcoming album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1G6-RUz3OA&feature=emb_title
-
New single is OK but for me the last truly great album was Wasting Light TEN years ago. . .
I'm hearing this new album is most like that one - but they're no longer one of my favourite bands.
Too many sub par albums in a row and way too many gimmicks.
Sad really since I was a fan since the first album.
If Medicine At Midnight is another stinker - i'm probably done with the band.
-
They're a funny band for me. They've always reminded me of The Wildhearts but nowhere near as good.
They have some amazing tracks but I never listen to any of their albums all the way through.
-
Apparently it's going to be a "groove oriented party album".
https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/dave_grohl_says_new_foo_fighters_is_disco_groove-oriented_party_album_talks_if_nicest_guy_in_rock_reputation_bothers_him.html

I think I'm saying something similar to you and Kotowboy, but... this is a band that, on paper, I should LOVE, but I don't. I have the Greatest Hits, the acoustic show (Skin And Bones, I think) and Medium Rare (a covers compilation) but when I dig in to the albums, I'm bored. I don't like Grohl's screaming, so there's that, and the music just doesn't grab me. So even though I like that they do cool covers, and they are music geeks, in conjunction with the original music, it's got a hispter, contrived feel for me. Like "hey, look how COOL we are! We're embracing Rush! We like Kiss!"
-
I like his screaming. I'm less keen on his cleans, I think. As you say, should love it but... I'm this way with Alter Bridge too.
Wasting Light was very solid. I used to run to it a lot when it came out. Not been back to it, tho.
Everlong and Pretender are AMAZING tracks, afaic.
-
Wasting Light was a top 3 Foos album along with the debut and The Colour & The Shape.
Their trouble is they have way too many boring AOR middle of the road songs and albums.
Sonic Highways was just OK and as a follow up to Wasting Light it was pitiful.
Concrete and Gold is probably the worst sounding rock album i've ever heard. By far their worst album. By a long way.
St. Cecilia was a decent one-off EP . But as I said it's now been TEN YEARS since their last truly great album and they just rely on gimmicks more than solid music.
And also - they made such a big deal of getting the Sound City desk and made both a film and a (non foos) album to go along with it.
And since then have not used it ONCE to record a Foo Fighters album. That's f-ing mental to me. You have your very own recording studio
with a legendary console. And then you never use it.
-
I think Wasting Light and In Your Honor are my top tier FF albums. I have a sentimental place for IYH simply because it was the first FF I got.
-
It's hard to rank FF albums cause apart from the really good or really awful ones - most of them are just bleh...
But easier in tiers :'( :'(
The Colour And The Shape
Wasting Light
Foo Fighters
There Is Nothing Left To Lose
Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace
In Your Honour Disc 1 then Disc 2. I don't think i've ever listened to Disc 2 in full mainly because FF ballads and slow songs are beyond dull. **
Sonic Highways
One By One
Concrete And Gold
Actually that was really easy :P - And I always forget about the song Wheels. Great song.
------------------------------------
** Dave seems to think all ballads ever should be " Singing in a hushed voice and every so gently strumming a clean guitar or acoustic and drums play with brushes
or every so gently tap them with sticks ". I can't get on board with songs like that in the slightest.
-
Shame, Shame
No Son Of Mine
Waiting On A War
-----
So far this album is like a cross between St. Cecilia and Sonic Highways. And so far sounds A LOT BETTER than Concrete and Gold - which imo was f--ing dreadful. :tdwn
I usually give my favourite bands three shit albums in a row before I stop listening to them. Wasting Light was amazing and up there with the first two / three albums
Sonic Highways was middle of the road AOR but was *fine*. Concrete and Gold was Dreadful. This album needs to be as good as Wasting Light.
And so far - as far as I know - no stupid gimmick to promote the album.
No " we recorded to tape in my shed ! " or " We recorded in 8 different studios with 8 different guests ! " or " We used a pop producer who's never made a rock album before
and made the worst sounding rock album ever made " ...
I really liked " Run " ( a sped up version of Pantera's Walk ? hehe ). But nothing else from the last album.
So far this new album doesn't sound like they recorded onto a boom box in an empty warehouse.
-
The first two albums still had a Nirvana influence on them, being somewhat quirky and angry. After that they changed in to a rather meat and veg rock band, still capable of knocking out a few great songs on occasions, but generally a lot of their stuff is quiet forgettable.
-
Ranking the Foos? Don't think I've ever thought about it. They've been a band that I've followed (for close to 20 years) but never considered them as one of my favourite bands. They are just a really solid reliable band, but never one I've obsessed over.
1. The Color and the Shape
2. Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace
3. One By One
4. There is Nothing Left to Lose
5. Wasted Light
6. Foo Fighters
7. In Your Honor
8. Sonic Highways
9. Concrete and Gold
There is a distinct drop off, after my top 5, for me.
I'm surprised to see One By One so low in people's rankings, I always liked that album (although it was the first album I owned by them, so it's likely just that).
Also, I've never been a fan of In Your Honor. I've always thought Best of You is easily their most overrated song and as lead single I think it shaped my overall opinion about In Your Honor. None of the songs really stuck.
-
In Your Honor - the rock side is pretty average and sounds like theyre trying too hard and the acoustic side is completely forgettable.
It backs up my assertion that Raskulinecz doesn't get the best out of the bands he works with. And Shogun by trivium was a fluke.
-
Huge Nirvana Fan,
I liked the first CD by FOO and saw them on that tour but since then Im not a fan
-
No Son Of Mine Live (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1qlr0-hCUQ&ab_channel=JimmyKimmelLive)
This is pretty good. That live sound too. Sounds way better than the last album. It'll always confuse me the number of bands who sound amazing live
- have access to the best studios and gear and producers - and time and time again - make albums that sound like a fuckin' distorted mess.
I think some musicians ( like Grohl ) think that to make an album sound "fuckin' huge" - everything has to be peaking so it's distorting
and you have to put tons of reverb on literally everything.
.
-
Just coming here to echo what someone had recently said about Wheels. It's an amazing song that people might have missed (because it was a song that was only released on the greatest hits, as far as I know).
Possibly a hot take, but I think Wheels and Hey, Johnny Park! are their two best songs!
-
I love Wheels. I always forget it exists too. It's like Tom Petty's Learning To Fly ( ironically ) - in that it's the same 4 chords over and over for the whole song.
-
Who wants to review this one?
-
I've been a fan of Foo Fighters since the first album so i'll happily post my thoughts of the new album on Friday :) :tup
My Top 3 albums are
1. Foo Fighters
2. The Colour And The Shape
3. Wasting Light.
My Bottom 3 are
7. In Your Honour
8. One By One
9. Concrete And Gold
I thought Sonic Highways was a bit bland coming after Wasting Light - but I played the whole CD recently whilst playing some Zelda - and it's a decent album. Way better than what followed.
St. Cecilia is a neat little EP too.
-
Just listening to the new album and enjoying it so far. It's a short album (there seems to be a lot of them so far this year, and I'm fine with that). Waiting on a War is great and exactly the sort of song I feel I've not heard from the Foos in a while. Early favourite for sure!
-
I really enjoy this album, for me it's much better than Concrete & Gold. It simply has more songs that I like.
-

This. Actually sounds like Foo Fighters and doesn't sound like it was recorded on a ghetto blaster in a warehouse.
" La De Da " from the last album was literally unlistenable.
...Cloudspotter from the new album reminds me of " Wind Up " or " My Poor Brain " from The Colour And The Shape :tup
They've not sounded like that in a long time.
...and that chromatic riff reminds me of Weenie Beenie !
-
The production on this album is LIGHT DECADES better than Concrete And Gold. It sounds like The Colour And The Shape ! :eek
-
OMG Holding Poison sounds just like The Colour And The Shape !!
I thought that version of Foo Fighters was gone forever :-[ :-[
-----
Ok so this is the best album they've done in TEN YEARS.
-
I completely forgot this was coming out but now I'm getting excited to listen to it.
-
After only listen, I think it’s pretty good, probably mid tier in their catalogue for me. Making a Fire was the standout song and Shame Shame is definitely my least favorite song. The intro to the title track totally reminded me of Let’s Dance from Bowie which I thought was cool 👍
-
I love Holding Poison cause it sounds like the first two albums. Especially a song like Wind Up which they've not done since then.
It's a good album and Chasing Birds reminds me of "Saltwater" by Julian Lennon.
-
Foo Fighters are either number one or number two (I guess Steven Wilson is the other) artists that on paper I SHOULD love, but, alas, just don't.
-
Foo Fighters are either number one or number two (I guess Steven Wilson is the other) artists that on paper I SHOULD love, but, alas, just don't.
I agree they are frustrating in that on paper they should write amazing albums every time but they put out
middle of the road adult rock like Sonic Highways or absolute dreck like Concrete and Gold
or really dull as ditchwater albums like Disc 2 of In Your Honour.
The first three albums are what i consider classic Foo Fighters - and Wasting Light is a career best.
But the rest of their albums are just so bland.
Medicine At Midnight is their best release since Wasting Light ten years ago if you don't count St Cecilia EP.
-
I have a Greatest Hits and I have the Medium Rare CD. They have songs I wouldn't turn off. Would I go out and buy their records? Nope. Would I go to a show? If she was hot and gave me the extra ticket, sure, but I'm not breaking out the sleeping bag to get tix for their show.
Yet, they are an analogue, classic rock band with a host of the same influences (Grohl has played with most of my idols, loves Rush and Kiss... blah blah blah.)
-
Plus ten albums in 25 years is not bad going.
I can think of some bands who have only managed two in that time.
When I was a kid - all my fave bands released an album every 2 years.
Nowadays it's more like three minimum. If you're lucky.
-
So, the Foo are turning into a disco band for the next release
https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-57524428

Their top 3 Albums
1. Foo Fighters
2. The Colour And The Shape
3. Wasting Light
Their worst 3 albums
8. In Your Honour
9. One By One
10. Concrete And Gold
I think Medicine At Midnight is their best effort in 10 years easily. But it's still not amazing.
-
Definitely with you on the top 3, except I would have the Colour and the Shape at the top. Such a great record. I tend to differ from most fans, and Dave, as he has talked about his dislike, on One By One. I actually really enjoy that one, and put it middle of the pack. Concrete and Gold is definitely the bottom though. Haven't really given the new one a fair shake yet, as Concrete and Gold was such a dud following up Sonic Highways, that I wasn't super high on either.
-
Sonic Highways was like the songs that weren't good enough for Wasting Light. I like the idea of a different studio for every song. But it was very middle of the road rock.
I've spoken about my hatred of C&G many times. Also Disc 2 of In Your Honour...I don't think i've ever listened to it twice. It's so dull. ESPG is a decent album though.
Still mid-tier but not bad. From the same producer as TCATS.
Medicine At Midnight is Good but that's it. Good songs. Good Production. But a lot of the songs sound like the same chords and it's only 9 songs which makes me wonder if they
just rushed it out. Despite sitting on it for almost a year. Holding Poison and Making a Fire are classic Foo Fighters. I don't mind it being a bit more groovy but the album is too short.
Dave LOVES a gimmick and i'm shocked they didn't put at least TEN songs on their TENTH album.
-
Agreed on top 3, although the order would probably be Colour, Wasting Light and S/T for me. Wasting Light is such a great album.
I actually like In Your Honour, and enjoy Disc 2 too...the song "On the Mend" has always given me mellow Queensryche vibes...a bit of Silent Lucidity in there...could almost picture Tate singing it ;)
-
I remember buying and really liking the first album when it came out, but the song that really hooked me on them back in the day was the cover of Down In the Park on that X-Files album. I didn't know it was a cover at the time. I listened to that song so much, but never got sick of it. Still one of my favorite Foo tracks.
-
Surprised at how much love there is for the self-titled album, it just doesn't interest me whatsoever.
But Colour and Wasting Light I definitely agree with, those are my top 2.
-
As of right now MaM sits at the bottom for me. It’s an ok album but nothing jumped out at me as great. Maybe it’ll click with me at some point down the road but for now, it’s dead last.
-

The production alone destroys C&G for me. It's their Saint Anger combined with Death Magnetic production. It's one of the worst sounding albums i've ever heard.
The song "La De Da" is literally *unlistenable*.

I always thought that was deliberate, to get that fuzzbox/distorted sound. Plus I love Dirty Water and Arrows.
-
It's AWFUL.
-
As much as I enjoy them do whatever they want, i'm not feeling this 70s project. I love 70s music and the idea but hearing You Should Be Dancing felt a little lackluster.

I quite like Medicine At Midnight, it's probably their best album since Wasting Light to me.

It definitely is.

Dee Gees came out over the weekend, and I think they did a pretty good job with those songs. Night Fever sounds great

Their top 3 Albums
1. Foo Fighters
2. The Colour And The Shape
3. Wasting Light
I totally agree with your top 3 albums, except TCATS would be my number 1. Nothing since Wasting Light has done a thing for me. To me, they've kinda gone to an area where there's no real excitement anymore. It almost seems like they've become complacent.
-
I feel like I'm the outsider here... I'm a fan of One by One and Concrete and Gold and not a fan of Sonic Highways or the new one so much (so far).

So the Foos are making a feature length horror comedy called Studio 666.
In "Studio 666", the legendary rock band FOO FIGHTERS move into an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history to record their much-anticipated 10th album. Once in the house, Dave Grohl finds himself grappling with supernatural forces that threaten both the completion of the album and the lives of the band.
"After decades of ridiculous music videos and numerous music documentaries under our collective belts, it was finally time to take it to the next level… A full-length feature horror comedy film," said Grohl. "Like most things FOO, 'Studio 666' began with a far-fetched idea that blossomed into something bigger than we ever imagined possible. Filmed at the same house where we recorded our latest album 'Medicine At Midnight' (told you that place was haunted!), we wanted to recapture the classic magic that all of our favorite rock and roll movies had, but with a twist: hilarious gore that fucking ROCKS. And now, with the help of Tom Ortenberg and the team at Open Road Films, we can finally let this cat out of the bag after keeping it our best-kept secret for two years. Be ready to laugh, scream, and headbang in your popcorn. 'Studio 666' will fuck you up."
I mean, sign me up this sounds really fun!
-
Well that sounds fun, interesting :corn
-
Good luck guys - but probably the biggest rock band on the planet - METALLICA released a movie which was also a concert film with a giant stage production
and it lost them A LOT of money.
So I don't expect this film to do very well. Dave probably thinks that cause his couple of documentaries did well - that he can do a film too.
Nah theyre quite different.
-
Figured this was the best place to put this, but it turns out Dave's daughter is a fantastic singer

About that. Their Youtube Channel has a song called March of the Insane from a band called Dream Widow which is apparently a fictional band in the movie? Apparently, the Foo Fighters created this song and took their evil pills for this one?

Hah! That's awesome!
Dream Widow :lol

Apparently they even recorded a whole album worth of material with Dream Widow. :lol

Just came home from watching the movie, and it was fine for what is supposed to be.
I laughed here and there, which is what I was expecting.

Same here. It's ok. The humor reminded me of Leslie Nielsen's comedies for some reason.
-
Went to see it friday night specifically because it was announced ahead of time the full band and director would make an appearance to intro the film at our showing :metal
Cool getting to see them talk about their experience of making the film in person :tup
-
Will put this in the RIP thread.

Apparently they even recorded a whole album worth of material with Dream Widow. :lol
It came out today. It's pretty much all Dave with a guy providing the guitar solos. If you buy from the Foo's website you can get it uncompressed as there is no physical version.

I just bought it after checking out the samples. Downloading now.

Taylor last show, Argentina, 2022
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL5TglrLxtI
I am cranking their discography in his memory!
:metal
-
Yeah, it's been a while since I really listened to a lot of Foo Fighters, outside of a song here and a song there, but I listened to a bunch this morning already, and plenty more to come the rest of the weekend.
-
Yeah, I felt today was a good day to do a Foo Fighters discography run through. It's been a while and in light of what happened yesterday it just felt right.
I'm going through the self titled album at the moment and I forgot how good this album is front to back! :metal
-
Listened to Dream Widow, is actually enjoyable.
Does anyone knows if Taylor played drums for it, or if that was all Dave?

The full lineup of guest musicians have been announced for the London show. This is an amazing group! I'm not a big Foo Fighters fan personally but this is shaping up to be an incredible show.
https://blabbermouth.net/news/rush-and-queen-members-among-musicians-who-will-perform-at-taylor-hawkins-tribute-concert-in-london
RUSH's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, OASIS's Liam Gallagher, QUEEN's Roger Taylor and Brian May, THE POLICE's Stewart Copeland, JANE'S ADDICTION's Chris Chaney, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE's Joshua Homme, PRETENDERS' Chrissie Hynde, Dave Chappelle, MAMMOTH WVH's Wolfgang Van Halen, Omar Hakim and members of Hawkins's covers band CHEVY METAL are among the artists who will come together with FOO FIGHTERS members Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear and Rami Jaffee and the Taylor Hawkins family to celebrate the life, music and love of the late FOO FIGHTERS drummer at London's Wembley Stadium on September 3.
-
I think they said more guests to come so unless i'm wrong this isn't the full lineup yet. It's pretty amazing though! :metal
-
Yea it's a really incredible lineup, those tickets are going to sell out in fractions of a second.
-
They also just announced the guests for the LA show, really looking like a special event. I'd be trying to go if they did this in NYC.
-
I may consider the LA show. I just hope it's not like the Chris Cornell Tribute show (whilst it was a good watch, it felt a little too corporate for my liking). This could be my only chance to see Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson in some live capacity as I never saw Rush. Had a shot back in 2015 at the Forum, but I was too broke to see it and thought, "even though, they are considering cutting back touring, they could come back to LA someday." That was their last show ever.
-
Got a ticket for the Forum show :hefdaddy
Assuming this will be my final Foo Fights show, but who knows what the future holds for them. Also thrilled to see Geddy and Alex play together again, I don't imagine I'll have that chance again either.
-
^^ How much were the tickets? I checked the presale too late today and the tickets available were already gone.
Edit: Just found out the prices. $120.00 with fees included. That's a bit too rich for me to spend. I'm going to pass for now. I got to draw a line somewhere.
-

I was just trying to get tickets and it's pretty much impossible. Oh well, I'll settle for some youtube videos.
-
A lot of not drummers. Who is playing drums? I see Chad, both maybe I don’t recognize other drummers names.

Omar Hakim. Incredible drummer.
-
Regarding that guest list, here are the drummers I recognized. Stewart Copeland (The Police). Roger Taylor (Queen). Chad Smith (RHCP). Jon Theodore (Queens of the Stone Age). Brad Wilk (RATM and Audioslave). Technically, Wolfgang Van Halen can be deemed a drummer as well.
On another interesting note. John Paul Jones has been added to the line-up as well. A Them Crooked Vultures reunion can be in place as well.

That seems pretty reasonable price for such a unique concert with a very popular band. Fair enough if it's out of your range, but that at least doesnt sound like a rip off (assuming you can get them at face value)
-
It is a reasonable price. I paid around $90.00 face value for the Chris Cornell tribute show in 2019, so you factor in inflation (which the pandemic has really accelerated) and that Foo Fighters are a much bigger band, $120.00 for nosebleeds does seem fair and it will sell out at that price.
-
Last year for the MSG show (1 year ago today actually) It was around that for the cheapest seats which all sold out quickly leaving the 200+ options as the only available. They released day of show side stage tickets for $50 that I ended up scooping up to go, otherwise I would have never seen Foo Fighters or Taylor Hawkins.
-
The London show will be live streamed

That's really cool, I'm looking forward to watching it.

Foo Fighters just announced as headlining the Sonic Temple festival in May. Any news on who's handling the drum duties?
https://sonictemplefestival.com/ (https://sonictemplefestival.com/)
-
Not that I've heard but they have announced plans to move forward with the band. They are also headlining the Boston Calling festival.
-
I believe they are going to move forward but with a different name. So same members, new drummer, new band name.
As for who is going to be, no idea. Maybe Portnoy wants in on it

They got Foo Fighters on the marquee for both festivals, maybe they're keeping the name.

I didn't see anything about changing the name in their statement, but I also don't follow them closely.
-
I didn't see anything about changing the name in their statement, but I also don't follow them closely.
Neither do I... I only saw it because Band-Maid is playing the same festival, so all those pages are going apeshit at the prospect of another US tour :lol
-
Just been Googling a potential name change but I can't see anything.
Vmadera00, evidence is required to support your assertion ;D
-
Was trying to find the article I read, but it is possible that it was a incorrect reporting and the article is no longer available (it was a rolling stones article). The article was quoting the statement the band posted for the new year, but re-reading the statement it just says the band is going to be different without Taylor, nothing about a name.
-
Maybe Dave will both sing and play drums?
-
That won't happen full time. He's too important to them as their literal front man.
-
Yeah...I think they'd go the route of a hired gun for a while till they find a permanent replacement. I can't imagine Dave settling behind the kit permanently.
-
I could see Dave playing the drums in studio, and them just having a live drummer. I would rather have a new full time member though. I am glad they are continuing.

Yeah, that's what I meant...Dave can definitely handle studio work, but I think he needs to be up front for the live productions. Plus, doesn't he play guitar as well? (not a massive fan, but I find this specific story of interest)
-
I wouldn't call myself a fan, either, but I do know Dave always has his Gibson around his neck.
-
Oh he definitely plays guitar while singing.
-
Josh Freese is probably a likely choice. He's been in the game for ages and knows the band well.
-
I thought Josh as well but doesn't he spend most of his time doing studio gigs?
-

He has been doing a lot of touring with The Offspring and one or two more punk bands for the most part. He also was part of the Danny Elfman shows as well. But as you said, he has a lot of studio gigs as well.
-
I guess it depends if it's a session tour gig or as a permanent member in the band. Given he's a busy session drummer, it depends if he's willing to give that all up and commit to one band. In general he probably goes where the money and most exposure gets him and Foo Fighters definitely gives him the most exposure but maybe not the most payed gig atleast not at first.

New Song: Rescued

I was kind of distracted whilst listening but sounded good, as well as hard hitting.
-
Who’s playing drums???
I don't know but my guess would be Dave.
As for the song... appreciate its significance but a bit of a shrug for me.
-

I don't know but my guess would be Dave.
That makes sense but is it supposed to be a mystery? Who will be their touring drummer!
-
It's a mystery for now. But my guess is also that for this recording, it was probably Dave.
I thought the song was fine, not exceptional.
-
It sounds like Grohl. As soon as he went into that Everlong beat I figured it was him. Similar fills as well.
Song is OK, I like the direction more than the last couple of albums and am happy that they're making music again.
-
The song was kinda boring honestly and yea it's probably Dave playing drums.
-
I received the single today as a promo, and the information about the drummer is in the press release but it has an embargo until at least 2 weeks before the album release
-
So that confirms it’s not Grohl? If it was him I think they’d just come out and say that.

I got strong In Your Honor vibes from it.

Me too, for sure.

This was my thought as well.

Oh, OK. Interesting.

Apparently The Offspring have recruitd a new drummer Brandon Pertzborn previously from Suicidal Tendencies.
So Josh Freese.... atleast for the upcoming tour?

I really dig the lyrics, they're deep and full of meaning, but wow, the clipping in that track is so bad it's almost too tough to listen to.

Awful, isn't it?
I found the track a bit, well, stock. But then I feel the same way about much of their output. Delighted they've pulled together and are continuing, though.

I like Josh Freese for the Foo. The guy can play anything basically.

I'm a good detective.

So funny seeing them play Money Wrench with so much energy that Pat had a serious workout with the downpicking. :lol

Also, I didn't know Dave's mother passed away last August.

Easily best of the bunch so far IMO.
-
The album was alright. Some good stuff here and there.
-
The album was alright. Some good stuff here and there.
Agreed. Not bad, but not one of their best.
-
Gotta disagree. It’s easily one of their best imo. Much better than the previous 3 for sure.
-
Much better than the previous 3 for sure.
Agreed. Hard to say after only one listen if I'll end up liking it as much as their best albums - found the first track underwhelming but then there was a lot of great stuff.
-
Not a huge fan of the way the album sounds (it seems like that's what they are going for, though, with Greg Kurstin producing), but there is some good stuff in here. I have already listened to it a couple of times today. It was more as background, so I haven't paid super-close attention...but, yes, first impression is better than the last couple of records...
-
Listened through a couple of times now and it is not grabbing me. If anything, it wants to put me to sleep. :-\
-
I like it better than their last two albums but it’s not a high bar.
-
I popped it on today for a second or third time and I'd say it's not bad at all. Couple of very questionable production choices, though. I get the reason for them but they just sound terrible: 1) the white noise at the end of the penultimate track and 2) the deliberate and then some brickwalling of the final track. The whole album is slammed but that track is extra slammed for artistic reasons, I guess.
-
I really like it though. Strong melodies, emotional lyrics. The Teacher is one of their best songs ever. This could be an AOTY contender for me if it still holds up at the end of the year.
-
I spun the new record again this afternoon and I think it’s a pretty strong record. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is but this album really captures the Foo Fighters sound from the late 90s/early 00s. Something about the vocal melodies perhaps, or something in the song structure, but I haven’t heard them sound quite like this in a long time.
I think there were flashes of it on the last record, but I get a bit of a nostalgia hit listening to these new songs.
-
I think it’s their best.
-
Still on the fence.
I hear a couple fantastic tracks with the rest hit and miss atm. Agree The Teacher is wonderful epic closer but no more so than Come Back off 2002's One By One for example...
I dunno, for some reason I was expecting more but will delve in again soon once the dust has settled.

I forgot about this after one listen. I will try to relisten some time soon. How is it aging with any of you guys?
-
I gave it a few listens and nothing ever really clicked with me. I will probably revisit it again soon too, but it will probably go the way of their last few records for me. I just never reach for those.
-
I listened to it a couple of times when it came out and really enjoyed it, but I also forgot about it for the last two months. I’ll give it another listen today.
