I was sitting at a traffic light blaring Misunderstood (the instrumental section just before "It challenges the essence..." and a guy next to me shouted over and asked me "Who is that?", so I told him Dream Theater and he said "Thanks!" and wrote it down on a piece of paper. :metal
-
:lol :lol
That really is a cool story bro.
-
I pulled up to a like blaring Misunderstood, and some guy screams "TURN THAT SHIT DOWN!"
true story

Another time I was playing Scarred, and I heard a really loud horn and it was an undercover cop next to me. I turned it off and he said, "Not everyone likes that music buddy." :blush
-
Years ago when SDOIT first came out, FW's dad and I were driving to a friend's house and were blaring Misunderstood on my car stereo, and FW was curled up in fetal position on the back seat crying with his hands over his ears. True story.
Okay, truth be told, I was actually blaring The Glass Prison, and instead of crying, FW was actually pretty into it.

Years ago, I was in a guitar shop and some guy next to me was playing Pull Me Under. Being a n00b at the time, I asked him "Is that Dream Theater?" He seemed to be amused at my question, replying "Yes, yes it is." He must have thought I was really cool for knowing an underground band like DT! True story.

One time I listened to A Change of Seasons in my car and I found it to be an enjoyable experience. :sadpanda:

If that guy saw that video, he probably thought "Oh my god I am the dumbest motherfucker in all the world"

This very situation happened to me in 2005 only it was The Dance of Eternity and he yelled "Sweeeeeet music! what is it?" I told him, ejected SFAM and threw it to him before the light went green :lol
-
Same thing happened to me when I was listen to some Prog Core
True Story

Cool true story, bro.

I've gotta do this next time!! Especially since I keep all my originals at home and burn CD-R's for the car.
-
I was listening to Systematic Chaos one time while was on the toilet. It really helped my situation, the two actually went nicely together, true story.

I imagined the story to go more like this.
I was sitting at a traffic light blaring Misunderstood (the instrumental section just before "It challenges the essence..." and a guy next to me shouted over and asked me "Who is that?", so I told him "It's Dream Theater!" and he said "Scream Theater?" and I said "NO! You Misunderstood!" Then I turned from a thief to a beggar.
Or
I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

I don't know why, but I literally laughed out loud at this one. :rollin

One time I was at work and I had "A Change of Seasons" on. Some guy asked me who it was, and I told him it was a band called Dream Theater. He said "Are you kidding? Those guys are awesome!" and I was like Shut up, you've never even heard of them. He says "What song is this?" and I told him. He said, "I've still got to get that. I still only have Images and Words and Awake."
This was when ACOS was the latest release. I said "Holy shit, you do know who Dream Theater is!" I worked with the guy for another five years, and talked DT with him whenever I could because he was (and still is) the only person I've ever worked with who knows Dream Theater.
True story.

You are a sig-making machine.

Also the cashier at my school school was listening to A Change of Seasons the other day, and... she is a WOMAN. True Story.
-
Argh, can't make the obligatory " but girls don't listen to prog" joke because we actually have girls here.
And also, because it's not very funny.

-
That's a really cool story indeed.
-
I was on an expedition that actually found the end of Pull Me Under. There were Nazis, Arabs, booby traps, a knight, a vilupcuous female, a bumbling side kick, a ruthless henchman, a temple priest who can rip out your heart and start it on fire.... oh wait I think I'm mixing up two expeditions I had.
-
This thread rules. True story. :rollin
-
i wish my life was this cool :'(
-
One time I was listening to DT and this cute girl asked who it was and I told her and she said, "Oh." I did not get laid at this point.
Shit.
-
Would you have gotten laid otherwise?
-
i was at a wawa one time, and i was wearing an I&W shirt. i was buying a water bottle and the girl cashier goes, "so Mike Portnoy really left DT?" my mind didnt process the fact that she knew who DT were, and about MP, so i just go "um... yea, it kinda sucks" and then left.
no, seriously, i chatted with her for a couple of minutes, but it was busy at that wawa so i didnt have much time to go into more details (or get her number) :loser:
-
Would you have gotten laid otherwise?
Probably not. :sadpanda:
-
bro story, cool

Epic thread. I wish I had such awesome stories to tell, but I rarely listen to music at other places than home.
-
I was blasting dream theater at work probably too loud since customers were hearing it well. anyways a dude walked in and said "hey bro is that slash?" I was upset.
oh 1st post also
-
I'd be upset if someone called me bro, too.

Why?

I was blasting Metropolis in my car and when I was waiting at the light, the instrumental section was coming to an end. Then I see a guy in a truck diagonal from me turn around and give me the dirtiest look. I don't think he enjoyed the music.
-
Zook, he was in a truck. There you go.
-
I had a visit with my father at the Mobil on the run he manages, and as I was starting to bike away, I noticed this old mail-man filling up, blasting the shit out of Take the Time. I was flabbergasted. I actually road by him and complimented him.
-
:tup
That's pretty awesome. I remember a guy next to me at a red light had PMU playing and I rolled down the window to express my approval.
You can rest assured you made his life much better.
-
I tried introducing DT to my roommate during the Washington D.C. field trip. As it seemed, I got a little carried away and was scolded. But I learned something. DT is one of my principal's favorite bands.
I still had to turn it down though.

I know a girl whose favourite song on earth is aCoS.

Sorry, bro, she has a boyfriend.

Another cool story. I was subbing for my Master Teacher today (I'm a student teacher) and in my 7th/8th grade Algebra class we were doing a review of graphs, so I thought the kids would love it if I brought in my laptop and hooked up some speakers and played some music and used the frequency response visualization to segue into how to interpret graphs.
I played a little bit of Kryptonite, Fireflies (by Owl City) and Pull Me Under. Needless to say, I nearly shat myself when some kid in the back recognized it and said "Hey, that's Pull Me Under".
:jawdrop:
I regained my composure when he said he heard it in a guitar game (Guitar Hero). Still, I thought it was cool. Also, when I turned it off, a kid said "Keep it going, that's good" and another said "That's my kind of music". :metal
-
... And then you woke up?
Nah, seriously, that's really cool. :tup
-
I have such a boring life.
Well I was introduced to DT through Guitar Hero :blush Sad but ture. At the time I was an "Ozzy Fan" (Not really, but he had the most songs on my iPod, therefore he was my favourite, LOL) Anyway, I was playing Pull Me Under. More like blasting. And my mom comes over and says, "Honest to god Natalie, turn that sh*t down!"
To this day she resents Guitar Hero for introducing me to both DT and Ozzy :metal

I love listening to DT in the car, but usually it is so loud that I couldn't hear anybody talking anyway, although I am paranoid I will have an ambulance behind me one day :)
I was in the U.S in September-October this year and I stayed at The Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont, I was wearing a DT tshirt and the waiter remarker cool top.
Later on in the trip I was hiring a bike at the entrance to Central Park in N.Y. wearing another DT tshift when another guy remarked 'I love Dream Theater', cool shirt.
Later on that night at Roger Waters, more people commented on the top. It was the 25th Anniversary top (how treasured it is now with current happenings )
I am guessing a lot more people in the U.S. know who DT are compared with Australia!!! It is a cool day when someone know who they are!
-
I wore my DT t-shirt to school a few days ago and I walked into the band room and two kids said 'Hey, hey it's Dream Theater.' They are a good band, the bass player's bass sounds like a fish though on a youtube video.'
I have since forgiven that weird statement as he said he likes DT, but is not a big fan. However, we hold similar views on other bands

My friend once pulled over because he was heard the sirens from A Nightmare to Remember and thought they were real. :lol
-
The first couple of times I listened to BC&SL, I was in the car, and I didn't pull over but I looked around for police cars or ambulances.
-
Yeah, I've done the siren thing too. Murderdoll's new one has sirens on a track that freaks me out too.
I've always wondered how they recorded the sound effects for that?
-
It happened to me while I was blasting some mathcore
Story true

This thread holds some of the best stories I have ever heard. :tup
