What an evil thing to wake up to! :omg:
Too early for this crap. :tick2:
-
I love snow!
-
I want snow. As in, real snow. Zero or slightly sub-zero temperature. And enough of this gray-ish pseudo-raining typical November crap. :\
November is the worst month of the year and always will be. I hate it with passion.
-
I loved snow when I was younger, but now that I have a car I've developed a strong distaste for it. I don't like driving in snow at all, having to dig it up every time I need it, it freezes the battery, having to scrape the ice off the windows... My kingdom for a garage.
But yeah, snow can be really beautiful and it lightens up the surroundings when it's dark and dreary outside. A Christmas without snow ain't much of a Christmas.
-
Snow, what is this snow you speak of?
-
I love snow!
I do too. Just not quite ready for it yet.
I just mowed my lawn yesterday! :tick2:
-
Snow, what is this snow you speak of?
Where do you live?
If you want to see snow, you're welcome here to Scandinavia.

Nah, that honor without a doubt goes to February. Worthless evil month. :tick2:

Georgia. Southeastern United States.
Basically it never snows but still gets cold as fuck during winter (last year it dropped to like -10F at its worst)
-
Come to Scotland, we get snow

But you have the super bowl!
And November has thanksgiving too :P

Can't wait for the snow to stay on the ground. It has snowed very briefly here in Halifax, but it's still too warm to be permanent.
Can't wait to get my sled out again. :metal
-

I've always wanted to travel to the UK! I'm 1/16th Scottish and 1/16th Irish so it would be nice to go, and people say I look like I'm Gaelic anyway, but money :millahhhh

I'm not quite sure what that's meant to be...

:sadpanda:
I can't help it, blame the economy and its major suckage! But I seriously would love to visit Ireland and Scotland both someday.

tick. I'm not sure what the Panda signifies so were even. Sadness?

Do it! Scotland's awesome. And I'm not just saying that 'cos I live here, it really is beautiful. I wanna visit Ireland sometime myself.

Yup, the sadpanda signifies sadness surprisingly enough :P

Don't forget the Loch Ness monster and groundskeeper Willie.

Well not in the city obviously (although Edinburgh is a gorgeous city anyway) but if you go driving out for a bit you can go to some really lovely hills/mountains and lakes and forests etc. :heart
-
I really like snow. Then again, I live in Florida so I never have to put up with it. Cold temperatures are awesome to me, though. When I was in Boston this past winter I absolutely loved walking around the city in fifteen degree weather.
Actually, it snowed in some parts of Florida last winter, so who knows!
-
All this talk of beautiful Scotland is making me want to travel. :sadpanda:
It sounds so nice....
-
Come visit sometime then :D
-
Come visit sometime then :D
I totally would, but you know........poor student and whatnot.
Once I'm done university in a few year though I'm thinking I want to travel for a while.
-
Yeah I know what that's like :-\
I really want to travel too but I don't know if I'm ever gonna have the money/time :lol

Nice! That sounds really awesome to take a walk through the wilderness and into the forest.
Hey, thinking about that now, I wonder if there are any Scottish Black Metal bands? :lol
-

If you ever find time and money, I give Greece my highest recommendation. And not the mainland, the islands. I went to a wedding there and the island culture is just amazing. Such a beautiful and old country too.
As much as I like snow (getting the thread sort of back on track), I would trade all the snow in Canada to go back just for a day.
-
Oh I've never been to Greece but I'd love to go! Also, Canada's always been quite high up on my list of places to visit some day :)

It really is, I love being on the top of a big hill or mountain and being able to see nothing but hills and forests in all directions.
-
Also, Canada's always been quite high up on my list of places to visit some day :)
Canada has got some great spots, and in some provinces you get some of the most picture-esque forest and wildlife scenes. We also have a reputation as really friendly people, so definitely come on over sometime.
If you ever stop in Halifax, I'm sure DTF group here would welcome you and show you around the city.
-
Snow means I can go out xc skiing. This results in the conlcusion that snow may be one of the most epic things ever
-
Haha awesome, I might hold you guys to that some day

Forgot about that. YES SNOW YES.

Oh, who's all out there?

We had a bit of snow here at the end of October, and once again, it's creeping down the mountains. Won't be long...
-
Haha awesome, I might hold you guys to that some day
Absolutely. We have a whole bunch of people over here.
Oh, who's all out there?
XianL, setrataeso, Global Laziness, myself, and I think one or two other people.
-
Oh hang on, are you guys in a band together? I seem to vaguely remember something like that...
-
Oh hang on, are you guys in a band together? I seem to vaguely remember something like that...
Yeah, we are. GL, ST and myself, plus two other guys.
-
Cool! Well I'll remember to let you guys know if I ever do make it to Canada :D
-
You reminded me tick that I need to change the sparkplug and oil in my snowblower.

Or go to Canada. They have snow year round as well. Why do you think they produce so many hockey players - they practice year round.

That's the upside of living in an apartment, let others shovel the snow for you

I usually like snow but if we get as much snow as we did last year, I'm not going to be happy.
-
Used to see boatloads of snow when I lived in North Dakota. I see entirely too much of it in PA now. I hate snow with every fiber of my being.
-
I usually like snow but if we get as much snow as we did last year, I'm not going to be happy.
Well, last year's winter in the UK was something extraordinary anyway, so I don't think that it will happen this year in the same extent, to be honest.
-

Who could've guessed there was going to be minus degrees in the UK? Poor buildings, everything about britain was epic fail last year. Even here in sweden where we are USED TO SNOW there was an even bigger fail. I've heard this years winter in Europe is going to be even colder cuz of the weakening of the gulf stream, partly because of you Brits and your British Petroleum, and as funny as it is the Swedish Chairman of British Petroleum... :lol
-
Getting our first snowblower was like getting my forst car as a teenager. As first the wife was taking pictures of me using it and the big smile on my face, full of pride. Now I hate every second snow blowing and 45 minutes later, when I finnish I curse for an hour.
-
I live in Louisiana. We get snow maybe once every 3 or 4 years if we're lucky. And even then, it's not even real snow.
.......

Hey, don't complain about our oil industries...it's all Aberdeen has :lol

The only time I don't love snow is when it knocks your electricity out for a week. Other than that, I love Winter, cold weather, snown... just no ice please.

I can't wait 'til the rinks freeze up here so I can start practicing my rebound control.

The annoyances:enjoyment of snow ratio can be pretty high. Largely depends on 1) how your local area handles the roads (which Seattle doesn't do for shit) and 2) how much you have to be on the road, or traveling in general, at the time. 2 years ago I was flying to Denver and got stuck in Portland, where I had a layover, for 4 days. Not PDX's fault, but that was a shit holiday experience.
I take the bus to work, so if the buses ain't running, I am not going anywhere, since, if a bus can't handle the roads, my car sure as shit won't be able to.
If the circumstances permit, however, snow can be a glorious thing. Snowshoeing, sledding, snowmen... it just feels awesome walking outside the morning after a nice snowfall, how quiet everything is, how fresh the air smells.
-
The only kind of snow I like:

As I was saying.... left work at 400pm yesterday, got on the bus, got home at 1130pm. Calculated we averaged 2.7mph the whole way, so theoretically could have walked the ~18 miles and gotten home sooner. Found out co-worker got home after midnight.
So yeah, fuck you, snow. But you are giving me a free day off work today, so we'll call this one a push.

There are no warm sunny days in Indiana anymore.
(I had to scrape ice off my car... not quite snow, but it's coming) :corn

Snow in Aberdeen today.
-
We had our first real snowfall in Halifax last night. As such, setrataeso, Space Invader, and I rounded up a bunch of friends and went to Citadel Hill (https://www.canadiansky.ie/graphics/Nova-Scotia-Prince-Edward-Island/Images-500x500/1-Citadel-Hill-Halifax.jpg) (it's hard to get the right perspective in that shot, but it's basically a giant hill in the middle of Halifax [which, I might add, is also a hill]) to go tobogganing.
Using a carpet sled we bought last year (like this (https://www.unifireusa.com/dealers/prodImage/06703565c.jpg), but crappier), a slightly warped disc sled (https://www.snowsleds.net/images/discsled.jpg) we found on the road last month (which my buddy spraypainted as used as a Ninja Turtle shell for Halloween (https://oi51.tinypic.com/246vp5k.jpg)), and our trusty mini-fridge door that we found in a dumpster last year, we had a blast! The highlight of the night was the eight-person orgy train we successfully managed to navigate down the hill on the three toboggans.
As I expected, it rained all day today so the snow all melted, but it was an awesome night nevertheless.
-
Sounds awesome :lol
-
I'm going to be depressed if we don't have a white Christmas here. It snowed earlier in the month, but it's completely gone, and there's only a 40% chance for it to snow on Friday.
-
I'll be getting a white Christmas ;D
-
Still in California, gonna be a wet Christmas for me.
-
Several feet of snow on the ground. I don't think having a white Christmas is going to be a problem for me. :P
-
Cool. The SF/Bay Area is incapable of a white Christmas, so if I want one, i have to move, and that isn't going to happen soon.
-
All the snow has almost melted here. But a white Christmas is a very rare occasion here anyway, so I don't mind it too much.
-
16 inches on the way in Connecticut with blizzard conditions. Batten down the hatches!
:tick2:
-
they are calling for 16-24 by me...its a whiteout outside ...literally cant see more than a few feet in front of my face
-
I hate to sound like a snowsnob but there's a shitload of it even in southern Finland this year. >:(

I had the same thing..had to drop off my kids at my ex's ..about 5 miles away..usually about 15 minute round trip...took my over an hour..

They're calling for so much snow in Philly that the Eagles game got postponed until Tuesday.
It started snowing around 2 p.m. today and I'd say there's probably about 3 inches on the ground now. But it's not supposed to stop until some time tomorrow.
I'm just waiting to see what will happen with my work...I'd really like to find out if the office is even going to open tomorrow BEFORE I try to dig out my car and drive all the way out there.
-
ITS SNOWINGGGGG... its about 10 inches..
... and the snows at about 12 inches
-
Hrmm I'm chilling in Florida right now but I'm flying to Canada, I'm sure I'll see plenty of snow :|
-
just spent 90 minutes digging my van out , got a block and slid into a drift...back home defrosting, still raging outside last count we were at 20 inches and its still falling

it isn't too awesome when you have to go out in it ..I'm 6'4 and it was waist deep. I did my bit too stimulate the economy though I paid 4 Mexicans to dig my car out

Wow I wish I could go in snow that deep!
Last time snow was up to my waist, I must have been about two years old. :sadpanda:

There is never a shortage of Mexicans willing to work is there? Shame on you for taking money of the pocket of the 15 year kid looking to buy a new Wii game. ;)

Not as much as you wkiml, but we got 14 inches up here. Going out for the 3rd time to snowblow. Damn wind!

The wind has been absolutely insane! Gusts up to 60 mph. As far as snow goes, my final total was about 8 inches, but the drifts created from the wind have been crazy. Also lots of limbs all over my yard but knock on wood, I have not lost power, and many around me have so I am very thankful for that.

5 Fucking hours to get to work today via wonderful NJ transit, shit I know its alot of snow and all but it has literally crippled the state. Its not like we haven't had snow like this before. We still have vehicles abandoned on the fucking highways..I mean REALLY??? REALLY??? is it that hard to tow them off???
I give up as much as I love having 4 seasons and all I can't deal with this shit anymore
-
Hey east coasters, another five day rainstorm just started hitting the SF bay area. Get ready for more. :xbones
-

As long as it comes for the NFL playoffs, I'm ok with it. :metal
-
I need to stop shoveling and buy a snow blower. I'm too old for this shit.
-
Man, we really dodged a bullet.
I live in a suburb just west of Philly...center city got about a foot, but my neighborhood (not ten miles out of center city) only got about 4 inches. My boyfriend and I had our driveway and front walk dug out and our cars brushed off within an hour and a half.
And wkiml, you're right...you'd think NJ would be better equipped to handle snow...your area definitely got hit the hardest this time...but shit...after all the snow the tri-state area got last year, you'd think they would have put a better plan in place. I remember last year there were literally igloos built into snow banks in my area that were as tall as I am. Crazy.
Or maybe businesses should just stop trying to fucking open when it snows. It would save a lot of bullshit.
-
And I actually don't mind shoveling snow that much. It's a pain in the ass when it's timed as such when I have to get up early and dig myself out and still go to work. But if I can do it on my own time, it's kind of fun.
What you have to do:
1. Take a bottle of your favorite vodka (or several bottles of beer, or whatever) and stick it in the snow (you know, to keep it cold)
2. Do a shot before you start shoveling
3. Dig a path to your car, turn on the stereo, and CRANK IT UP. (I find Pantera is best for this activity)
4. Continue to shovel, and do shots periodically as you progress.
And if you keep moving, you'll find that you're not even that cold.
This is actually how I wound up becoming friends with my next door neighbor. My boyfriend and I were out shoveling and he came over to help us (bless him). All I could offer him in return was a shot. Turns out he's a vodka enthusiast, so we've been friends ever since :D

I'm 46 and I would prefer a new snow blower.

tick, 3 shots and we'd put the shovel down and drink inside.

I know I should adore snow, hailing from the frosty plains of Scandinavia, but I'd be glad if I never saw snow again. I'd gladly sacrifice the idea of a white christmas in order to solve the problems that come with it. Always felt like there was some mix up, I should have been born in a warmer climate...
-
Just shoveled 15 inches of snow out of my driveway with only a shovel! Its still coming down 2 to 3 inches an hour but I have to try and be in work at 11:00am. :(
-
We're getting hit too. We've had maybe 7-8 inches so far with plenty more on the way. I love snow. :)
-
We haven't had that much, but whether it's 3 inches or 13, it's annoying as hell. I have to drive 45 minutes to an hour for an audition tonight on roads that will probably re-ice by the time I'm coming home. Lovely.
-

Yeah but 18 inches piled up at the end of my driveway with only a shovel to get out is a hell of a lot worse then 3 inches, period.
-
Indeed, no question about that. Not sure how much we got, but I'm annoyed at a half inch, so I'd really be incensed over 18 inches, granted I wouldn't be going to work OR anyplace else, but still. I feel for ya, man. ;)
-
We are getting crushed today. I'm working for my bud and it took us 1 1/2 hours to drive 30 mile in a truck that has 4 wheel drive. I can't wait to go home after and finish the snow blowing. :tdwn
-
We have at least 18 inches where I live. I'm heading into work at 1... that is if the plows come any time soon.

I hear ya1 I'm leaving for work in about 15 minutes. I'm giving myself 50 minutes for what should be a 20 minute drive. If I'm still late, fuck it! At least I am showing up.
-
Seems you NE guys got the brunt this time..I woke up expecting the worst and only had about 6 inches , didn't even need to shovel the car out, just pulled right out and got to work about 20 minutes later than norm

Fine...wait until there is an earthquake and you fall into the abyss that is the center of the Earth.
On a side note, I have always wanted to know about that...can you actually fall into the Earth during an earthquake, and how far would you go?

Earthquakes, I laugh in the face of earthq...wait....WTF....MOMMY!!!!!

Huge snowfall up here in Halifax, too.

We got about 5 inches here. Luckily it was the really light, fluffy kind so it wasn't too bad shoveling this morning.
-
Well, I snowblowed about 14 inches and in about 2 hours I've got 3 more inches on the ground. Damn you snow.

My sympathies. That is what the cold weather will do for ya. If you ever find that inadequate, let me know and we'll hook up ;)
In all serious, got snow in Seattle again, but luckily it was overnight, and by morning, the rain was turning it to slush. And it doesn't appear to be cold enough to freeze.
-
We got a bunch of snow out here today. I love the way outside looks after everyone has shoveled their driveways. It's always so serene to look at.
I do hate shoveling it, though. :lol
-
Got a foot and a half easy. Had no power from 5:40 AM to 2:40 PM! 9 f##king hours!!!

20 inches total for me. The whole gang is home today. My wife is home with a hurt back and my daughter has no school again.
Phase 2 of operation dig out begins. Yesterday I did what I had to do to get out of the driveway and get to work. Today the end of my driveway is plowed in again, and I will start to monumental task of clearing the mountain of snow off my sidewalks. Then I must dig out my second car and clear that half of the driveway. It should be a fun morning.
-
We probably got 12-14 inches total. Thankfully I didn't have to do any shoveling, but the poor landlords were out plowing and shoveling several times.
-
18 inches here. Got up early before I went and worked for my bud and cleared 4 more inches from last night. I here there will be a little snow on saterday night. I wish it would hold off till sunday for the football game. I love snow games.

Its minus 5 right now without the wind chill! Its insanely cold. Tomorrow its supposed to be in the 30's and more snow on Wednesday! Crazy weather!!!!
-
Yeah man, today is fucking nuts out. I don't remember ever feeling this cold. My car turned over about 15 times before it finally fired this morning. I went outside to start it early and let it warm up for the first time ever. After 25 minutes of idle time, the engine temp gauge barely moved. Wednesday is supposed to be hella shitty.
-
Crap. Above 0, so it's melting a little. And hasn't snowed in forever. The snow sux for skiing :(
-

My first thought was that -5 isn't that cold, I mean, it's -30 in Halifax right now, not including wind chill. Then I realized you people use Fahrenheit.
I feel your pain. It is cold enough to freeze joints and I have to walk to class.
-
-5 is pretty f'n cold for CT.

It's what...about -20 Celsius? Yeah, I agree that's pretty cold. I was just confused for a second there.

I just checked the weather here again. Looks like my estimate was a bit off the mark. It's actually -18 with wind chill it feel like -29. The worst part of living in a coastal town is the wind off the ocean, which is not only constant but damn cold.
Despite how cold it is, we don't really have much snow though.
-
Winter is the best season.
It's -24 here (-33 with windchill). I'm wearing wool socks, which is good, because my feet are bloody and raw from having played so much outdoor hockey. I have a game tonight, should be good. I've got long johns and pajama pants on under my normal pants, and a heavy sweater as well. Planning a ski trip with family. I love winter so much.

You mentioned hockey so I'm assuming that temperature was in Celsius and that you live in Canada. Whereabouts are you?
-
Ugh. I hate fahrenheit.
There are better things to waste your energy hating, but....
Anyhoo, its 30 today. Feels tropical compared to yesterday. Two inches of snow has fallen so far this morning and once again school is delayed.
:tick2:
-
They said last night that we'd get a dusting to an inch but I've got 3 inches already. Plus big storm comming in a day 1/2. These last 3 weeks have been brutal.
-

I'm sick of talking about the weather. Everyday its, "more snow on the way, blah blah blah, and then more next Tuesday, blah blah blah." :yeahright
-
I went to class this morning and waited half an hour and only 5 other kids showed up with no teacher. We all just ended up leaving.
I have two more classes next, hope the snow/traffic is still bad and I don't have to do anything for the rest of the day. :lol
-
Serious pet peeve of mine. Is it really that hard to clear off the snow on the top of your car? Is it really that hard to clear your whole car off?
I always do and it takes all of 5 minutes even if I have 2 feet on it.
You always see the jackass driving with 2 ft piled high all over there vehicle, looking though a peephole on the windshield cleared by there defroster.
I want to smack them in the head.

i was in LA a couple of weeks ago, and 85 sunny in January is just outrageous. I don't know how anyone could get any work done there.

:lol
I especially love teasing me daughter about the weather, who lives outside of Buffalo. I sent her a text this morning similar to my post, and her response was a very kind version of "fuck off."

17 fresh inches on the ground this morning on top of already a foot plus. INSANE!!!!

14" here

I haven't gotten NEARLY what any of you gys have. I've gotten a dusting in comparison. With that, I'm so f*cking ready to move to some place warm that it ain't funny. I'm already f*cking sick of this. I don't know how you guys deal with it, I really don't. I'd be postal in no time.
-
As much as I hate winter, it's not enough to make me want to leave New England. I love being where I am. I have excellent golf weather a few months of the year. I have plenty of vacation spots all withing a few hours drives. I think I might hate extreme heat more than the snow. I visited a buddy down in Florida two years back. I walked outside at 8:00am and it was already 84 degrees.... fuck that. I also actually enjoy driving in the snow. I feel like an ice road trucker, except in a Mazda hatchback.

Its rare when the coast gets more than inland(which is where I live) but that's what I am dealing with. the snow over night was absolutely nuts! It was dumping 4 and a half inches an hour at around midnight, and the winds were gusting to 50 mph.
-
Getting tons of snow is amazing. Fuck the haters. Bring it all on.
-

Yeah, if it was just about snow falling I would agree. It damages homes with leaks collapsed roofs and such and kills local business making a bad economy worse.
Celebrate, have fun. :tick2:

This, oh my God, this. There are few things that turn me into a full-on, raging, nearly homicidal lunatic like having my drive home lengthened by a couple of hours because it snowed, some dipshit decided he was impervious to the effects of snow on tire traction, got in a huge accident, blocked off traffic, and made me and every other person in the state's capital have to find a different way home.
-
7 more inches here. My gutters are taking a beating even with me owning a roof rake. Snow never bothered me until I owned a house and seeing the damage it causes first hand.

Sounds to me like Americans need to learn how to deal with snow. I've honestly never suffered considerable inconveniences from winter weather. Except for the Ice Storm.

We got about 15 inches here. Wouldn't have been so bad except that they didn't plow my street and my neighborhood is all hills. We had my driveway and all of our cars dug out within about 2 hours.

This Winter blows! My kid has no school again!!!!! Now I have to scramble to find someone to watch her today. They had the entire day yesterday to prepare for today and they still cancel!!! Thanks for fucking me up the ass again!!!! I have a job I need to get to and so does my wife! ENOUGH!!!!!!! >:(
Sorry, I'm pissed off.

yay ice storm today, slip and slide baby!

Once again, I'll state that even though here in PA we aren't getting NEAR the amount of snow you guys are, it's already enough that I'm getting pretty pissed at repeatedly having to put on clunky boots, clean off my truck, and brave the roads with a bunch of idiots who only half have a clue as to how to drive in inclement weather. I do not know how you guys do it.

You do what you have to, Coz. We don't have a choice. The worst thing is the snow is piled so high you can't see when your pulling out of intersections. Its quite dangerous. Also, the roads have gotten ridiculously narrow.

I read in the paper the other day that school's closed because the snow banks on the side of the road were like 7 feet. They were afraid of little children waiting for the bus and not being able to be seen by anyone driving.
Also, the roads have gotten ridiculously narrow.
Driving through New Britain, there are many roads that are normally three lanes and are down to one. Makes for a nice cluster fuck during rush hour traffic.

The sad thing is that these idiots have been driving in this weather for easily a month and still haven't learned >:(
-
I know. Irritates the hell out of me how many people continue to drive like it's summer out, when there's snow and slush all over the roads.
-
We're supposed to get 25 centimeters overnight here. Should be awesome.
-
Hoping for no school tomorrow. Expected to get at least a foot.
-
8 inches today. Went to Boston today. left at noon and it took 2 hours to go about 23 mile.
But on the bright side. 12 more inches tomorrow. :tdwn
-
Chicago area just got it's ass smacked by a huge blizzard with no signs of stopping. My boss called at noon saying they were sending everybody home from work and that I shouldn't come in tomorrow till 5 pm cause this storm is gonna go all through the night and into tomorrow. I kinda wish I had a sled dog team right about now.....
-
We have a good two feet in the area immediately outside our house. Drifts up to four or five.
-
Looks like Mother Nature showed St. Louis a bit of mercy today. That massive storm which is still wreaking havoc all over the country, especially in Chicago, was supposed to hammer us like crazy tonight and through tomorrow morning, following a solid day and a half of freezing rain (from late morning yesterday till about mid-afternoon today), but it inexplicably swerved around us and we are likely only gonna get a few inches by morning. Wow.
Hopefully, the peeps in the cities that aren't as lucky will be safe. This is one for the ages.
-
Never mind what Space Invader said; the latest forecast is as much as 60 centimetres in the next 36 hours or so.
-
Two snow days in a row... AWWW YEAH
-
Its a skating rink outside my door. VERY Icy, VERY dangerous st this point and time. I have to be in work by 11:00. I need the temperature to rise a few degrees. My wife is driving at this moment and I am scared shitless uhtil she calls me and tells me she has arrived safely.
I have been in Connecticut 46 years and never experienced a Winter like this one.
I'm hoping we don't lose power or I down have a tree go down.
Thankfully I bought a roof rake last week and my roof is clear going into this ice storm, otherwise I would have more concerns.
-
So I arrive at work and the one lot I park in is almost completely empty. I come in the building and entire rooms are dark. There's next to nobody here. Granted I was up 2 hours before I had to be at work, to scrape all the ice of mine and Mrs. Cozmo's vehicles, but still. The drive TO work wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, but still wasn't great. Ugh.
-
School's cancelled here...and it's raining!
-
Another day telecommuting...working from home ...no trains to NY
-
We're getting dumped on today. Supposed to get 12-18 inches today after about 4 yesterday. They're up on the roof frantically trying to shovel it off here at work when someone did the math and realized that there's more snow on the roof already in a few spots than it's rated for without everything we're getting today.
-
We've already got ~30 cm here in Montréal. It's beautiful. Though it means I can't play hockey today :'(
-
This is the first time in my life that I recall having to endure rolling blackouts. It's a trip. I actually wanted to come in to work today since the powers off/on at my apartment. The shop's proximity to DAL means they'll leave us alone.
-

lox, don't you live close to Keene N.H. ? They seem to get pounded all the time with snow.
What pisses me of is, after snowblowing and shoveling for 2 hours. I came in and stripped off the wet clothes only to have the plow come by and make that damn wall of snow in my drivway. I hate them.

Yeah, I live in Keene. We've gotten what I'm told is an abnormally large amount of snow this year (this is my first winter here). The surrounding areas more up in the hills around here have gotten hit worse.

Snow's melting away now in stockholm. I'm hoping for some cold weather again :(

Sigh, could all this snow melt now. ::)

I'm in the dark purple band myself. I'll stck with the US models, thank you very much. National Weather service calling for Heavy Snow on Friday, making no accumulation predictions.

In all respect, MI is equipped to handle such storms. My family in NH is relieved when they hear a storm is only going to dump 2 feet. While CT as a whole is a rich state, it has a lot of areas that are poor as shit and can't afford the DOT crews. The response time for storms like this are atrocious.
-
I know :) just felt like being a smartass. In some ways I'm jealous. 2ft of snow is a bitch to drive in.

Yeah, well this is a bit different. 25 inches with wind gusts to 80 mph. This is not your garden variety storm. In fact it could eclipse any I've seen in my lifetime in that area. We we soon see what comes. Should be interesting. My flooring store has decided to close tomorrow and Saturday so I get some unexpected time off. With no pay! weee hoooo!
-
Stay safe guys! Make sure you save up some water and shit. Hopefully it's not the nasty wet shit.
-
I'm already tired of this blizzard and it didn't even get here yet.
-
Now they are talking 65 MPH winds where I am plus 20+ inches of snow. Looks like a job for the generator.
-
I just got back from gassing up my vehicle. and of coarse I bought milk and bread. Not exactly sure why you have to do that but hey, rules are rules so...
-
I didn't get milk and bread. Instead, I bought 6 bundles of firewood and and 12 pack of Molson Canadian.
-
There were block-long lines at the gas stations last night.

I've never looked so forward to a Monday before!

Woah woah woah Chino, are those pogs??
Last I checked, 8 inches outside. That was three hours ago.
-
Wow Ceceilia...I don;t think we're more than 15 miles apart (as the crow flies), and I don't think we've got more than about three inches on the gorund.
-
Millahh I moved last year. I live in the most northern part of Westchester, on the Putnam county border. I am about 45 miles from my parents in Bayside.
We have about a foot of snow.
-
Woah woah woah Chino, are those pogs??
Yes. Many pogs.
-
I think we're at 22" in Colchester, CT.
-
That's nuts. I have 15 inches in Watertown. We are Waterbury's neighbor, who according to the news, is getting hit the hardest.
-
Yeah, it's pretty crazy. My dog won't even go near it. He walked out for a few seconds and came right back in. I guess he's not a fan of snow higher than him.
-
We are at 26 inches right now. And the drifts are higher than the cars hoods.
-
We got slammed here on the MA/RI state line. I'd say there's at least two feet out there. I'll post some before and after pics shortly.
-
I measured 24 inches in the driveway, and 31 inches on the back deck.

We have 33 inches. I'm ready for my old back to blink. Its gonna be a tiring day.

I'm waiting until 12 pm when it slows down before talking the clean up and raking the roof.

By the way, I'd be thrilled if we only got a foot. I don't have the official numbers for what fell here, but I had to shovel out a spot in the backyard this morning so my dogs could relieve themselves and that show was all up over my knees, AND I shoveled out that same exact spot last night twice, once at 7:00pm and once at 10:00pm.....I gotta think we got close to 30 inches of snow here.

Milford Connecticut - 38 inches of snow :omg:
This has eclipsed 78
-
Sure...I'll be heading out soon.

We got somewhere around 3ft. I'll take pictures after I finish clearing the driveway.
-
NWS says we got ~8 inches, although it looks to be ~13, based on an undistrubed spot out of the wind. Only took ~15 minutes for us to dig the car out, but we didn't get plowed in, either. However, where I work (Commack) apparently got 29.1 inches.

Snow is good when you are a kid and you get to stay home from school.
When you are an adult and you work in a rehearsal studio & your job needs it's customers to turn up or you don't get paid -
- It's a royal pain in the arse.
-
Good Morning America is broadcasting from my home town of Milford Connecticut where we are having a nightmare of a time trying to get moving. Day 2 and no one is able to move due to many unplowed streets. They have to bring the snow to dumping facilities as they plow so its a slow boat right now. Don't know if work is in the cards for tomorrow?

Finland can suck my dick.
I just dug out of 38 inches of snow with a shovel. This ain't Finland, and I don't own a snow blower.
-
Can't go to work today. Our parking lot still has 3 feet unplowed. Don't know about tomorrow.
-
They're saying Hartford won't be cleared until Wednesday at the earliest.... Hartford. My school was announced to be close at 10:00AM yesterday. Snow everywherrrrrre.

No power from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. WTF? A tree limb came down. Neighbors across the street and next door to me on one side were good. Us..nope!
Bought a new snowblower Thursday night! Damn good thing, or you guys would be reading my obituary.

Morning commute by bus in New Haven. ummm...no.

Tac, that really sucks that you guys lost power. I guess you don't have a generator? We bought one after the last hurricane when we lost power for six days.
I posted in the chat thread, but guess I forgot to post here. My fiancé's Grandfather was snow blowing on Saturday. He wound up having a heart attack and passed away a short time later. He shouldn't have been snow blowing, he was in his 80s, and it was heavy snow. I am told that he didn't like to hire people to come do things and liked to do things for himself. Oh and his son's my fiancé's dad) birthday was yesterday, so things are just one big emotional mess over here.
-
Damn, Cecilia, I am SO sorry :(
-
Thanks KNH.
I only met him once, so I didn't know him. I just feel bad for the family... and kind of awkward since I of course have to go to the wake and funeral and be in the front row with my fiancé. I'll be a good supporter, as long as I don't have to go close to the casket.

My university is closed AGAIN tomorrow.

Horrible news, C. Well, he was self sufficient to the end and went out on his own terms. Like Frankie sang, he did it his way.

Apparently a few more inches are on the way for the Northeast this weekend.

I'M NOT AFRAID!
@ Celcilia. That is very tragic. So sad. An eighty something year old woman from CT was snow blowing after dark right after the storm started (trying to get ahead of the storm I suppose). Someone out driving during the driving ban hit and killed her. Guy took off and looks like he got away with it. :sadpanda:
-
Chino yeah I heard about that!
Thanks again guys! The wake was yesterday and funeral today. My future father in law had to go to the house a few times and said that he had almost finished snow plowing and it was perfect. He was definitely self sufficient, and really wanted to get the job done.

Thanks guys.
So how's it going in CT? I am reading about the earlier mentioned storm coming Saturday, 1-4 inches.
-
Remembering, Nemo...
The memory of what I first saw when I looked out the window Saturday morning is seared into my brain forever. In this photo we had almost dug out, except for the most daunting task... the end of the driveway...and just shovels.

They say up to 10'' in Boston from Thursday to Friday. W00t!
-
Starting to snow pretty good here in ole Virginia. Would be excited for classes to be cancelled if we weren't already on Spring Break.
-
I'd be happy with a dumping on Thursday seeing as I have a midterm that day.
-
Our school still has a day to play with, so I wouldn't mind a snow day, as long as my power stays on
-
Coastal Connecticut should be mostly rain. We shall see.
-
Bump, but relevant. Having a blizzard. Everyone has to stay off the roads. Up to 35 cm. What kind of April is this?

Just spent three hours in traffic trying to get home. Accidents everywhere, people stuck in snow mounds.
A commute which normally takes around 25 minutes stretched into hours since we got close to 12 inches today in Philly, pretty much out of nowhere, yet no one thought it would be a good idea to cancel class.
-
Wasn't sposed to start until noonish here. Started at 8AM, gotten 6.5" so far... 13.4 miles took 1hr 20mins to get home... Moving to Hawaii.
-
Jesus fuck, what a shitty drive home. 36 miles, 3.5 hours, all highway.
Also, my little BMW does not handle snowy inclines well, I've discovered...

I left work 2 hours early. I usually have a 75 minute ride home. It took almost three hours, and that was avoiding highway all together.
My Mini Cooper hates this weather!

I know right? I went out and shoveled everything clean around 7:30pm thinking everything was winding down, but apparently not.
God damn clusterfuck mid-day though. Took like a half an hour to go 5 blocks.
-
It snowed in North Carolina. We got about a half inch at my house. So yeah, it's kind of a big deal.
-
In Lake County, Indiana the lake effect machine kicked in and dropped up to 2 feet in some places... this has been a crazy winter around here :justjen
-
Hell yes, its a snow day. School is closed.
Shame I didn't have any classes scheduled today. :P

Over a foot on LI, and a balmy 12° right now...

I don't understand how this storm, where we got a foot, managed to fuck everything up more than the storm last year where 2.5 feet dropped on much of the Island.

I'm in South Jersey, right over the bridge from Philly. I left work in Pennsauken at 1 p.m. and finally made it home to Clementon in just about 3 and a half hours. It's usually about a 35 minute commute. >:( But, at least I wasn't driving.

This happened close to where I live and work. Just be safe while driving in this type of weather. The conditions changed suddenly and people weren't ready for it :(

Mother nature is gonna get a cunt-punch pretty soon. 6+ inches on the weekend here... the wet heavy shit too. Then, I don't know what the "official" total was today, but there was 10 inches on my van by the end of the day (mrs.jingle didn't have to measure, she knows EXACTLY what 10 inches looks like).
Seriously though... I've had enough of this shit. It's piled so high around my driveway, the snow blower can't get it over the pile. We have to shovel the edge of the fuckin lawn so there's a place to put the snow from the driveway.
Seriously, go fuck yourself Mother Nature.

This was my deck railing earlier today. It's an optical illusion with the angle I took the picture. It's actually 13 inches of snow. That's from the weekend, and today (up to about 1pm). We got probably another 3-4 inches after that.

I kind of envy you guys :(
All the snow has pretty much melted away. Haven't gotten one SINGLE XC skiing session in. It's depressing.
-
BAAAHH HUMBUG!!
12 inches dropped here. Worked 10& 1/2 then spend and hour snowblowing.
-
I'm so over this winter...
-
Pretty normal winter here. Last year it was snow snow snow, this year it's cold cold cold with snow mixed in. Last year, the last snowstorm was May 10 or something like that, then five days later it was eighty degrees.
This year, the cold has been pretty bad. -10 degrees most days with bad wind-chill. Warming up this week though with snow and about 25 degrees of warmth
-
I know snow is probably the worst thing to deal with when there's so much, but what the hell, what I wouldn't give to see it one more time. :lol
-
Here we go again. I should take up the offer of moving to Hawaii...

Well...I think I'll be working from home Thursday...coffee, pajamas, Futurama, and writing performance reviews. That does not look like anything the 128i is going to handle well.
-
If anyone is in the Philly area and listens to the Preston & Steve morning show on WMMR- Steve put it perfectly yesterday morning:
Regarding all of the snow so far, and the imminent storm coming this week that will likely be the worst we've had yet- he was basically like...
At this point it's like going into the prison shower and spreading your own ass cheeks. You know it's coming, there's not a damn thing you can do about it, so just accept that it's going to happen and get it over with. :lol :rollin :lol
OMG how many more weeks until Spring???
-
School's cancelled tomorrow. Thank god, now I can get caught up.
-
Expecting 10-14 inches tomorrow, in March... :sadpanda:

This sucks. I moved closer to the foothills of the Cascades *JUST* so I could be where there would be more snow every year. In that 10 year time frame, we've had maybe two halfway decent snows. And absolutely *NONE* this winter whatsoever. :( :yeahright :\
-
We're supposed to get another foot tomorrow night.
Grumble...grumble...grumble...
-
Here comes the snow
Here comes the snow, and I say,
It aint all right.
Little darling,
It's been a brutal fucking winter
Little darling,
It seems its been around for years...
Little darling,
Its so cold I cant feel my face, yeah
Little darling,
This cold might last throughout the year.
Snow, snow, snow...I'm so numb
(Repeat 5x)
Little darlng,
It'll be July before its all melted
Little darling,
I don't think it'll ever be warm round here.
Here comes the snow
Here comes the snow
It aint all right.
8-12" of snow?!?! Again?!?! C'mon!! Make it stop, make it stop, makeitstopmakeitstopmakeitstop! Enough already! We get it. Mother Nature is a bad ass. Uncle! Mercy! No mas!
-
Here in the Toronto area, the previous consecutive record with snow on the ground was 81 days (back in the 70s if I recall the news report correctly). We blew past that on Friday. Given the extreme cold we've been having, the amount of snow we have (and we got another couple of inches overnight), methinks this year will hold the record for quite some time. Pretty sure we'll hit 100 days no problem.
In Regina on Friday, it was hitting -40oC, -58oC with the wind chill factor. Only place colder than that apparently ... Mars.
-
Chad, you must be having hard time snow blowing when the snow does not melt. Nowhere to go when the piles get that high.
-
You know it bro. A couple of weeks back, I had to shovel my lawn so that I could shovel my driveway! >:(
-
Holy crap that does not sound like fun. I get pissed when I finish snow blowing and the plows come back and mess things up. It's like they hide around corners waiting for us shlubs to put away the snow blowers. :lol
-
We're having a nice fun storm here in Missouri. Here in the St. Louis area, we had freezing rain all night (which was loud enough on the trees to never let me sleep for very long without being woken up >:( :censored), and we will top it off all day today with 4-8 inches of snow. Glorious. I am soooooo ready for spring. :coolio
-
We actually only wound up getting about 3 or 4 inches overnight last night- much better than the foot they were threatening.
I find it really pathetic that I'm happy with only getting 3 inches of snow.
-
We got absolutely nothing up here in Boston.
-
In Regina on Friday, it was hitting -40oC, -58oC with the wind chill factor. Only place colder than that apparently ... Mars.
What makes that distinction all the more worse is that the people who live there have to endure those temperatures while living in a town whose name rhymes with "vagina".

Which in turn gives a relative perspective to the term "it's colder than a witch's cunt"

Not sure how you pronounce "vagina", or Regina, but they don't really rhyme that much. :lol
-
^ The town of Regina in Saskatchewan is pronounced Ra-ji-na, not Ra-jeena, as you would expect. Vagina is pronounced va-ji-na. The only difference being one starts with the letter R, and one with the letter V. About as rhyming as you can get really.
-
Wow, you learn something every day!
-
Wow, you learn something every day!
You'll notice that no one from Regina came forward to explain the pronunciation. :lol
Not all the Canucks on this board are from Quebec and Ontario. I'll bet at least one is from Saske-ass. Probably Regina too. :lol
-
YtseCullen is from BC I believe.
-
We're getting 40+ cm (15-16+ inches) over Monday and Tuesday apparently. O Canada. :lol
-
Holy crap. Thankfully it ain't coming this way!
-

That's probably from the same storm that's hitting me now. Luckily, it's finally rain this time instead of snow.
-
Yeah, tons of rain here in Boston.
-
For real?
-
Some snow dusting here in Boston.
-
70 yesterday and inch of show and 28 degrees this morning.
-
"Historic, potentially crippling" storm...biggest in NYC history. Should be good times!
-
I'm in the 30'' range. Fun times indeed.
-
I'm in 15-20 inches. Oh joy
-
Jesus...they're talking about shutting down public transit tomorrow afternoon already!
-
Snowpocalypse 2015
-
We're supposed to get a foot or two.

This is the only topic of discussion today (CT). I'm already annoyed.

Maybe Bill Belichick can extract all the moisture from the clouds and the crisis will be averted! Then we can combine two popular topics!
Possible 3 feet in Milford CT on the way!

And my family wonders why I want to stay in mid-Florida permanently.
-
The only thing good about Florida is that it will one day be home to Avatar Land!
-
Nothing here.
-
And my family wonders why I want to stay in mid-Florida permanently.
I don't know, I love this shit. There's something to be said for "facing the elements".
-
This has been a suspiciously mild winter for us. It's January and for a good chunk of the month I've been at a pretty comfortable temperature. No huge snowfalls either.
-
And my family wonders why I want to stay in mid-Florida permanently.
I don't know, I love this shit. There's something to be said for "facing the elements".
I agree, and speaking of mid-Florida, I was visiting a friend a few years back in Tampa Bay when a hurricane started heading towards us. I was SO excited that my trip coincided with it, but was left disappointed as the storm was downgraded to a tropical storm, changed directions multiple times, and ended up hitting every part of Florida except Tampa Bay. :'(
-
And my family wonders why I want to stay in mid-Florida permanently.
I don't know, I love this shit. There's something to be said for "facing the elements".
Come up where I live. The damn power goes out when one tree falls down. :lol
-
Coming from Germany, I still don't understand why not more power cables are underground here. The accumulated cost of constantly having to repair power lines every freaking blizzard must have outdone the single cost of digging, by orders of magnitude.
-
I knew I should have bought that snow blower
-

It's these backwards towns in which I live in. Many tree and towns don't budget enough to trim back these trees every year.
-
Time lapse camera set up. Bring it on.
-
And my family wonders why I want to stay in mid-Florida permanently.
Yeah, but down there you have to worry about millions of bugs and alligators. :P
-
I think I'd freak if I opened my door and there was an alligator staring at me.

The bad part about being a boss? Got to go to work in this snowstorm the next 2 days.
-

Take care , Joe. This is the only day of the year that I don't miss being a Store Manager.
-
Thinking the drive home and Wednesday morning will be worse.

I think part of it is that the US has never really had the reset switch hit...unlike Germany, Japan, and swaths of the UK in the 1940s. We're bound to our old infrastructure, just making it work with klugy modifications. Many places that got the slate wiped clean essentially got a do-over on infrastructure. That was perhaps what jumped out at me the most visiting Munich after having lived in NYC for a few years.
-
Which brings me to a theory of mine that no matter how well you manage a country/company, the accumulative effect of legacy will drag you down, until some second-generation country/company comes in and wipes the floor with you because they have a clean slate.
It's like drag racing, but new cars can come in later.
-
I'm just trying to wrap my mind around you watching drag racing. :lol
-
Yeah, probably not my thing.
Now, drag *queen* racing, that I would watch.
-
Go copyright that right now.

Seriously, I'd watch that. That looks hilarious.
-
So how are the Boston folks doing? We've gotten maybe an inch here out of a projected 24.
-
So far nothing big. But, it's only supposed to start after 11pm.
-
School's canceled for tomorrow, so I'll shovel and then relax.
-
I've got about 3-4 inches so far.
-
They were calling for up to 2 feet for my area earlier this morning. By around noon they were issuing warnings to leave work early, get home before the evening rush, because that was supposedly when it was going to really start coming down and it would cause white-out conditions.
It's 9:30 pm and we've barely got a dusting. So much for the "historic snowfall." :\
I was really hoping for a day off work tomorrow.
-
I've got about 3-4 inches so far.
Are "that's what she said" jokes allowed any longer? Have they jumped the shark? If not..then...
-
Supposed to get over a foot, got half an inch
Still got off school, so its win win :D
-
Good morning. Um..there's snow outside!!!
-
Fun drive to work. Shutting down between 10 ans 11 am for the day.
-

Stay safe, bro.

you know it. I want to get my guys out of here. I live right in town.

ugh, I'm pretty sure we've got at least a couple of feet on the ground this morning and it's coming down hard still

Finally! SNOW!
Even though it snowed, at most, an inch or two, school was still cancelled.
-
At least a foot so far, and going strong still.
-
Little shy of a foot here in Queens. Pretty amazing gradient on the snow depths...Central Park got about 8 inches, but less than 40 miles to the east got (and is still getting) 2+ feet.
-
At least a foot so far, and going strong still.
Had 18" in my driveway, with drifts/plows at almost 3' at the end of it.
Just came in. That was fun! :yeahright
-
Just got home and finished snow blowing. 24" so far.
-
I got maybe 8 inches.

Looks about the same here.
-
We're going to end up with 30+ inches here. Crazy! I have to snow blow again later this evening. I also need to rake some snow off the roof.
-
If I was still up north, I'd be fighting snow, crappy drivers, and cabin fever.
Outdoor beer and BBQ fest this Saturday down here this weekend.
Which sounds like the better plan?

Totally jealous. We haven't had snow in the northwest of THAT magnitude in probably more than 5 years.
EDIT: ....and we didn't have a *single flake* this entire year. In fact, I think the ski resort near the I-90 pass may be in big trouble....I don't think they had a ski season at all this year. Maybe we had a few weeks in December. But right now there's NOTHING in the passes but green grass.
-
Clarification.... I just checked and I exaggerated a bit, but not by much. The most popular ski area (Snoqualmie Summit West) has a total of 12" of snow, with no snowfall in the foreseeable future. All skiing is closed (even at some of the higher places) but "tubing" is still open in some spots.
Still.....it's pretty bad.

It was ridiculous how over the top the newscasts were. I mean you're being nice even mentioning 4".....there might have been 2...possibly 3. Anyway, you'd have thought we were in Boston or something. Sure....the roads were a bit messy and slow....I drove to work and they weren't fun by any means but I'd take that over what King and the rest of these fella's have been getting.
I got home from work around 5:30 yesterday and my wife said our boys had just gotten in and had been sledding since 10:30 that morning :lol Man I remember those days....despite being frozen solid you just stay out and keep climbing that hill. She said she called them and the neighbor kids in around 2:00pm and made them all hot chocolate and threw their outer gear and socks in the dryer....then they hit the hills agian for the rest of the day.
-
The newscasts, especially Weather Channel, are being so over the top with every new storm because it justifies their job somehow. Also this winter storm naming bullshit has got to stop since it seems to have only been created by TWC to add this catastrophic hype around what is, in most cases, a mild snowstorm. I'm surprised they haven't been told to cease it since they're the only ones who use it and its sole purpose is to create fear.

Ah, to be a kid again.
Do you remember the early 90s when we had that ice storm on NYE? I want to say it was maybe 1990 or 1991. I remember it because we had a big backyard at our house back then, and after that storm, our entire yard was a sheet of ice and we busted out the hockey sticks and puck and played hockey on it. That was so much fun. :hat

I do, what also happened there out in Eureka (right next to the High School) where I grew up was a large creek tributary for the Meremec River was right by our subdivision. The river and creek flooded....got above flood stage.....then it got really cold and froze solid. The water receded yet the 5"-6" sheet of frozen water was left 10-15 ft up in the trees. It was a sight to see. So you had literally a 6" sheet of ice acting as a ceiling of sorts all through the woods. It was AWESOME! We had a massive BB gun war one day....man it was cool. There were sections/places where the 'ceiling' had collapsed throughout the forest....it was just a surreal experience. Totally wish cell phones would have been common back then cuz I'd do anything to have had some pictures of it.

Good stuff. :coolio

On a topic-related note, I remember, many years ago, when weather.com wasn't the clickbait shitfest it is now.

Yeah what's with the 6 or so tabloid-like "YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHAT..." image links that take up the bottom half of a typical page? They're not even related to weather.

Is there a proper way to say that shops name? I say it mentally very straightforward and I swear I lose brain cells.
-
Given that you ask I'm assuming you are not aware it's a twist on the French term "Pret a porter"? (it's a fashion term, meaning "ready to wear")
Pret a manger means then "ready to eat", and it's pronounced "Pret uh mawnshay"
-
Even if you had a gun to my head I would never had guessed that as the pronunciation.

The snow today was weird. It was gigantic flakes that was super loosely packed. It looked like fake snow or someone dumped coconut everywhere.

SOOO glad to be able to park in a garage for this storm. Living in Queens for the previous nine years, and only having on-street parking suck-diddly-ucked. What was worse than digging out the car itself was trying to deal with the piles from the plow that had basically frozen solid.

Third shovel complete, snow is piling up nicely along the sides of the sidewalk and driveway. My brother's friends came over in thier huge chevy denali to make it through the snow and then to also consume the rest of the driveway so that means not much shoveling left to do.
Apparently the flooding is really bad nearby and a lot of houses lost power, but nothing has impacted me yet. It's only expected to get worse as the full moon tide peaks at 7:30pm (in about an hour). I'll probably be joining the boozing thread soon.

Largest snowfall ever in Baltimore (24'-40") depending on locations. At least there is no follow up drifting, or the flooding along the coastal areas from Ocean City on up past Long Island.
Hey, it could have been worse

It's been weird that the Northeast is getting pummeled and here in Minnesota it's been in the 30s and extremely comfortable. It's been a weird winter so far. Raining in December, our usual bitter cold in January (-20 without wind chill) and now it's 30 degrees and I opened the window yesterday to let fresh air in.
Our storms are coming soon though, there just won't be as much news coverage about it.
-
well, here we go again. they are saying 12-16 where I am at. I can already hear it against the windows and it sounds nasty. Still ice/rain, but its supposed to turn to powder. The key thing though is that my school is closed, thank god.
-
I came into work early. I might have to stay later depending on who from the next shift can get here. The only other problem...they shut down Staten Island Railway so right now I'm kind of screwed and might not be able to get home. The irony - I work for transit.
-
Instead of the foot of snow we have about 2" of snow and about an inch of ice. Working from home.

At least you got a winter. It completely passed us by here in Oklahoma. Yesterday we were down to the mid-thirties for the first time in a long time, and we're do to be back in the 70s to 80s for the rest of the week.
-
2 ft expected here today in N.H.
-
We weren't going to get the same South Carolina winds around here, but we were still expecting 15cm or so. It now appears that where I live is going to be right on the edge of the storm, and we'll likely get 5-7cm at most. :phew:
But, it's colder than a witch's cunt out there. -20C with the windchill.
-
We're getting a lot less than they predicted. The storm is being pushed away from us.
-
I'm in the Pittsburgh area, they were predicting we would get 4-6 inches overnight. We literally got nothing. Supposed to accumulate around 1 inch throughout the day today... That's it.
-
I think we might have 5" with a nicely thick layer of ice on top. Supposed to change back to snow at some point today.
I think what pisses me off about this storm isn't really anything to do with the weather itself; it's the overblown sensationalization of the entire event. A local forecasting group has been sowing seeds of fear and panic since last week and calling this the BIG KAHUNA and all that, warning of stranded motorists, power outages and worst case scenarios we hadn't seen in March for 20+ years....and then all we get is this fartstorm.
I get being prepared, but this is the second time this year they've completely overblown and missed the severity of a storm. Earlier this year they fucked up so badly the storm never even happened. I am just so sick of oversensationalized fearmongering.
-
Looks like a shitshow outside here in CT.
-
The rain/sleet has transitioned to proper snow where I am at. We are now in official snow globe mode.
-
So much fun snowblowing the driveway....while it's raining! :\
-
Me, a couple of days ago: "Man it's so nice out. Maybe it will stay warm for the rest of the winter."
Mother Nature, today: "Guess again motherfucker."
>:(
Seriously though, I hate this weather. It's the biggest reason why, as much as I love NYC, I want to move to LA.
-
That snow was a major pain in the ass to shovel. Wet, heavy, slushy mess
-
Meanwhile in Arizona, we're closer to summer at 90 degrees. Except for allergies, scorching summer heat and the world's worst drivers, it's pretty nice here otherwise.
-
Fuck you Steve! :lol
-
:rollin Sorry Tim. Couldn't help myself.
-
Neither could I! :lol
-
Been getting dumped on here in the midwest, but nothing compared to what NE gets. GLHF, guys.
-
I work in the town I live in. 18 inches so far.
I left work at 345pm. It took me 30 minutes to get out of the Wal Mart parking lot. When I got home I couldn't make it up my street. Snow blowed my driveway, the plow came, I fixed the entrance to my driveway. Moved my car to my driveway shoveled the walkways. Just sat down 2 1/2 hours later.
-
90 something degrees here today.
Just sayin.
-
No thank you. I hate heat. This is just extreme.
-
70° and sunny in the Rockies, today. We'll probably have a foot of snow next week though. :lol
-
Hardly a stitch of snow here.

We had about an inch of snow on Sunday but it was gone by afternoon time. Now it's just extremely cold.

The blizzard wasn't as exciting as everybody thought here in Boston. Oh well. Snow!
-
90 something degrees here today.
Just sayin.
We almost hit 80.
-

Oh I wasn't bragging. I miss weather.
-
90 in mid-March? No thank you.
-
I certainly miss the blazing heat. The 90s in March is welcome, especially more than this snow.
-
Well, I had my car dug out real well, but apparently some time last night the plow buried me again. Its 19 degrees out right now and its all solid ice. Couldn't get it out
-
Yeah the wind blown snow has crusted over this morning. I've got to snow blow again tonight when I get home.
-
90 in Phx now. Yeah, it's too early for 90. 74 is forecasted for next Wednesday. Look out, cold front! :lol

How can you be cold with a name like Phoenix? :rollin
-
It was super overcast and I couldn't get my powers from the sun ;)
But its all good, cause I just went Rambo on that shit with an ice wedge staff. Phoenix 1, Ice ZERO
-
:lol Sweet!
-
Wow, today the roads were absolutely terrible. Almost got into an accident twice and almost got stuck multiple times as well. Very glad to be home
-
Ugh. I hate this shit. I'm glad it already stopped here.
-
In the middle of it. Still at work. When I get home I've got to snow blow. yuk.
-
Finally stopped snowing so I just finished shoveling... easily a foot of snow today. I am ready for bed now.
-
My snow blower failed 10 minutes in yesterday and I got to shovel for four hours instead. :censored

There are two bolts on the left side of the body that hold the handlebars in place. The lower one backed out completely and fell out who knows where, and the second one backed all the way out but I caught it before it went missing. I can't get it to thread back in though, which makes me think there's a nut on the inside of the body floating around somewhere. Looks like I going to have take the thing completely apart to access it. It's a horrible design. Had they tack welded the nut to the inside body, you'd be able to thread a bolt through it from the outside without having to get inside the machine.

My left tire has a slow leak that pulls it to the left it I don't pay attention to it.

I had that issue last winter. My valve stems were rotting to the point where you could hear the air escaping. They were a quick fix. I changed out both of them in about 15 minutes.
-
I think I'm finally biting the bullet and buying a snow blower. I was always the guy that said "fuck that, I'm young and healthy, a little shoveling never hurt nobody!". But now I'm old, not so healthy, and yes, it does hurt some people, including me!
Thankfully it was light and fluffy, but between blowing and plows and what not, there was two and a half feet of snow at the end of my driveway, and it took every bit of two hours to do the last five, six feet. Fuck that noise.
-
When I moved into the house I live in 16 years ago, I made that investment. With 180 of sidewalk (we have a corner lot), there was no way in shit I was doing all of that. Some years, it's the best money I ever spent; some years, I don't even refill the gas tank. Usually, there's more of the former. Plus, when the street plow comes around the corner, I usually get a shit-ton left at the bottom of the driveway.
Like snow-tires, I don't think I'd ever live without a snow-blower as a home owner.
-
My left tire has a slow leak that pulls it to the left it I don't pay attention to it.
It could also be corrosion on the actual wheels, leading to a bad seal on the tire. I have a few of those on two cars. Tire shops charge about $25 to re-seal the tire (and may even grind off some of the rust to help the seal). It lasts for a few months, then the leak comes back. In the summer, it's not a big deal and I just put air in the tires at home with my compressor. But in the winter, the colder temperatures help reduce the air pressure significantly and more quickly.

Yea, I'm slowly moving that direction as well. I keep telling myself this forces me to get a good workout... but I've been sick and luckily my brother was home yesterday to help shovel with me, but if I was stuck alone, I would have really struggled with that. I found a cheap small one online that someone shared with me at work. My driveway isn't big so I've never felt the need, but yesterday was rough and has me thinking about it now.

Looking pretty good today (AQI is around 30 here), rains cleared stuff up nicely.

It hasn't been snowy at all really so far in Minnesota. We had rain last month and the next day it snowed out, so the roads were a thick sheet of ice--driving was horrible that day. Other than that, it's just been small 4-5 inch snows one day and 1-3 inches other days, nothing dramatic. It's just been cold. Last week when I went to work in the morning, it was -32 F and warmed up to -5 later in the day. This morning I wasn't expecting -19, but thank God it wasn't windy. Really, the cold doesn't bother me at all, it just sucks when the cold freezes the wires in my truck for the speakers and I have to drive in silence. Oh well...

Got a snowstorm coming tomorrow and then Wednesday, it gets cold!

Hard to believe it will be 130 degrees warmer in a few months. I gotta be honest, once it gets below 0, I can't tell a difference in temperature. It's just cold.

I hear ya, tonight thru tomorrow central WI is getting around 6 inches of snow and we'll be in the -50 wind chill on Wednesday. Could be worse, southern WI is supposed to get 12+ of snow.
-
What the hell? Just have Donnie order up some of that Global Warming.
-
Looking out my windows now and it is nice and sunny. Then I look at the temp and it is a brisk 1 with a wind chill of -10. Supposed to get 4-8 inches tonight and then it says the high on Wednesday will be -12 to -16.
I have therapy for my elbow surgery on Wednesday. My therapist told me I can cancel if I think it's too cold. I think I might be cancelling.
-
Looking to put a scare into 70 degrees today, think I'll go for a nice hike.
-
Wow -53 degrees F mentioned above , holy smoke man !!! I always hear people say that they would rather do without heating than air conditioning ( I'm in the hvac business ). They say that they can add more layers to stay warm , but there comes a point where these people and their layers will just freeze. But I guess a lot of folks just don't have to work outside and have never been cold. Heating is a requirement to live , AC is just a luxury . Being too hot is uncomfortable , being too cold causes real pain and death even to someone in perfect health. Stay warm friends.

Amen to this.
Cannot remember if I mentioned this in this thread or another already, but family members and I sometimes have a friendly debate over what is better: cold weather or hot weather. I always argue for hot weather.
Hot weather can be sticky and gross, yes, but your car cools down pretty quickly, and when you walk inside from the heat, that blast of cool air from the A/C feels amazing.
Cold weather is just awful on all levels. Your car takes forever to even think of getting warm, and when you walk inside from the cold, you still feel chilly for minutes after getting inside.
I cannot imagine living somewhere it is cold all the time. :tdwn :tdwn

You must be in the same region where my youngest brother lives. He's in Minneapolis. The high there on Wednesday is expected to be around -14. Crazy!! I live in Phx where the high will be 85 degrees warmer than that. :flame:

I'm in the Chicago area. Spent 2 hours shoveling this morning. My regular snow shovel broke on me. At my age and condition, I'm seriously considering dropping the money on a blower finally. They are saying these Polar Vortex things may become more common as the Arctic air keeps getting pushed out by warmer air.
Now I am seeing highs of -16 to -20 with wind chills of -45 to -55. My Director told all of his employees to just stay home this week until the weather works itself out. I did cancel my therapy on Wednesday. No way I am going out in that mess.
-
We are under a winter storm advisory and a wind chill warning until Thursday here in Fort Wayne. Wednesday's high is expected to be -10, with over night lows about 10 degrees below that. Wind chills are expected to hit 50 below. What's kind of funny is that the band Frost* will be doing a recording workshop here starting on Thursday morning. They are going to get a chilly reception for sure. ;D
-
It's so cold here (Chicago northern suburbs) that they closed our offices and declared that only "business critical personnel" need to report to work. You'll know if you're considered "business critical" because your immediate supervisor will tell you. I'm not.
This is nuts. It's so cold out that, in the interest of public safety, they're telling people to just stay home. If your car breaks down, you could literally freeze to death while waiting for help.
Re: snow blowers. Absolute life saver. Shortly after buying the house, we got one. We had a little extra cash, so we went for a huge beast with separate motors powering the wheels and the augers, electric start, the works. Very nice machine, clears the driveway in minutes, but in general it was probably a mistake. I was talking to my co-worker, and some years back when his beast died, he got a small one. The only "must have" was the electric start. It's a lot easier to get the little guy out of the shed/garage and deal with in general. Obviously it takes more passes up and down the driveway, but as long as it can handle the crap at the end that the snow plows leave you, it'll get the job done. I need my son's help to get our beast out of the shed, it's so damned big, my back can't deal with it. And despite being self-propelled, it's still a wrestling match at the end of each pass just to turn the thing around. There is such thing as too much machine.
-
Yeah, I cleared my schedule for the whole week. I don't have to leave the house until Friday at the earliest. I went to get the mail around 2pm and that walk to and from the mailbox was horrible. It's 1 with 26 mph winds by me right now.
If anything, I have learned a lot about what these Polar Vortex things are. Had no idea that these were Arctic fronts getting displaced and wreaking havoc. It makes sense now.
I have been researching snow blowers. I'm reaching the point of no return. Honestly, I need a riding mower too. The price of these things are pretty crazy though.
-
If anything, I have learned a lot about what these Polar Vortex things are. Had no idea that these were Arctic fronts getting displaced and wreaking havoc. It makes sense now.
The polar vortex is a large, high-speed circulation of cold air in the stratosphere, which is the atmospheric layer above of where weather happens. Sometimes an area of polar stratosphere warms up suddenly (SSW - Sudden Stratospheric Warming), which leads to a break-up of the polar vortex. This then has a knock-on effect on weather patterns that makes these mid-latitude Arctic outbreaks more likely. The warming event causing this was considered major.
-
So basically, a blast of warm weather from above pushes a lower layer or Arctic weather 1/2 way down the hemisphere?
Someone tell Donnie he got his wish - Global Warming is the reason for these temperatures!
-
Had to find the story, but a 125 degree warmup above the North Pole is what caused what we are going through.

They say this might be happening a lot more. I might just be finding the funds for a snow blower now.

Shop Craigslist in early to mid summer for them. I scored mine for $225 and it's gone a good four years now.

Once you get a snow blower, you'll wonder how you actually survived without one.
-
I was peeved on Monday morning when our John Deere wasn't starting. We got probably 5-6 inches where I live, so it wasn't the end of the world, but it's got hand warmers and it was subzero to begin with and it's bigger than our little red one that I would have loved to have had it. I kept going back to it and eventually got it to work. Was able to finish the driveway with ease.
Right now, it's -44 F. Driving to and from work, it was kinda dangerous. The snow isn't all the way cleared from the road, so it's just ice on some spots of the highway. Bridge decks are pure black ice, you could see the sheen reflect off the sun. I don't think a lot of people seem to understand black ice. I'm not going 75 in a 65 with literal patches of death sprinkled on the highway. I literally passed by a tip over car in a particularly treacherous spot of the highway.
-

This. Current house has 180 feet of sidewalk (since I have a corner lot), plus a double driveway. Next house (1 month today it's ours!) has a 12-car driveway. Snowball's chance in hell I'd ever shovel that.
Same for winter tires. Would never drive without them.
-
Took the plunge yesterday and bought my first snowblower.
I guarantee we won't get measurable snow for years now.

Temps were below zero here four days ago.
Today it will be in the 60's. Much, much better. :coolio :hat

HAHAHA, I did my part last year; though I've gotten to use it twice (and it came in real handy once; the plows do a number on the end of my driveway).

Got about 4" of snow last night and this morning at my house. Which for this area is like a blizzard of apocalyptic proportions.
-
Left my apartment at 7:30am to get to work. Parking lot was 3 feet of snow. Tried to back out of garage, car got stuck in snow. Spent 20 minutes in -30 or whatever shoveling snow. Managed to get my car back in the garage. Called co worker to pick me up. Find out work is postponed til 10am. No one told me.
Get to work, same coworker's battery dead. Go to pick her up, and car gets stuck in snow again. Very very friendly guy helps push car out of snow.

I hear there is a winter storm warning in my hometown in Wisconsin ......too bad I’m on vacation in Orlando.
-
Typical news report for Seattle, where what people in Canada call snow flurries makes us look like we got hit by Captain Trips:
Earlier this week, Seattle was hit with a snowstorm that shut down the city. Some neighborhoods received about half a foot of snow... Officially, the Sea-tac airport received a storm total of about 2.7 inches of snow.

Reminds me of winters in Atlanta. It's be normal to cold and the usual Atl weather, then a weekend out of the year it'd drop like 3 inches, and the whole city'd fucking come to a halt.
Don't even want to know what would happen if the SF bay area got an actual snow storm, that'd be fucked.

I ran into a couple when I was in Nashville the other day and they were talking doom and gloom about the snow. Then we said we were from Minnesota and they stopped and said: "Oh, in the case I guess we don't have it that bad"
-
It's all relative. When cities and drivers don't have the infrastructure or experience, I can totally understand it being a fluster-cuck.
-
I’ve been in Orlando all week on vacation and where I live WI they’ve been gettin a snow storm every other day, gonna suck to get back home on Saturday.
-
We've had about fourteen inches of snow fall in the past 48 hours. Fun and games.
-

Well, I imagine Seattle isn’t exactly equipped to handle more than 1 or 2 inches of snow, so I can see why it’d be difficult. I’m surprised it doesn’t snow more there, with all the rain they get and all.
-
I live near a small town called Sequim about a two hr drive west of Seattle. We now have eighteen inches of snow and it's still dumping. Its also windy creating snowdrifts. This is at sea level, I think the penguins and polar bears might be heading our way. Haven't had this much snow since 1996.

I saw that area got hit hard. I am in Lynnwood and we didn't get as much as was expected. Though as you know, anything more than a thin layer can wreak havoc around here. My favorite are the pictures of grocery stores with empty shelves.

I’M SO HAPPY!!!!!!!
When I was a kid, Seattle used to get snow quite a bit more frequently in the winter. I recall getting fairly decent snowfall at least once every few years anyway. Now it seems like we only get really good snow about once every 10.
Oh sure, every other year we might get an inch in the morning which melts by noon...but I don’t even count that.
-
Now it's two feet deep in Port Angeles and Sequim. Still dumping here, lol!
-

Ya...you're out in a totally different area. Although we are getting it pretty decent here. We've got about 6 inches or so in Maple Valley (for those of you not from here, I'm about a 30 min drive SE of Seattle. A bit closer to the foothills of the Cascades. I have friends a little higher up who have at least a foot.)

I have a friend that works at the local QFC, and said it was like a shark frenzy feeding on animal planet. The manager said it was the busiest day ever a day or two ago. People go berzerko! Rightfully so since we got 2 feet of snow, lol!
It is quite beautiful out and might as well enjoy lt, and my dog loves it too. Rockin the snowstorm! :metal

No snow to speak of in Connecticut (shoreline) so far this Winter. No complaints from me.
-
We've got about 6 inches or so in Maple Valley (for those of you not from here, I'm about a 30 min drive SE of Seattle.
At three in the morning after the plague hits maybe. Isn't it more like 1+ hour in real time?
-
I went out with a long stick broom and knocked the snow off my prized Japanese maple. I don't want any branches to break. :chill

lol that reminds me of my "prized Japanese Maple" that I absolutely butchered by trimming it a couple years ago. I had no idea those trees are actually really expensive :lol Showed a friend my work thinking "hey look I did some good yard work for once" and he told me how stupid I am, it grew back now though so all is good I'm glad I didn't accidentally kill it.

Ok....45min. And honestly, I can get there most of the time in about 45. The Maple Valley Hwy is a B-line to the freeways.
EDIT - if it's rush hour, it's an hour. If it's particularly bad, or there's an event downtown....it's more. So ya, it can be that long.

:lol
Indeed, they can get expensive. I've worked at nurseries and the Japanese Maples (Acer Palmatum) had a pretty heavy price tag. I just had to include the botanical name here, that's the geek landscaper coming out in me..

We've got an okay-sized one on my property. When we bought the house, the realtor said something like "and in a few years, you could probably get $5K for that tree". I had never heard of one prior to that.
-
What makes them so expensive? We have a few of them, and they're kinda cool-looking, kinda different, but I had no idea they were some kind of special thing. Just a wacky mutant maple, as far as I can tell.

about a foot of snow in the last 12 hours in central WI and its still coming down. I'd wave the white flag but no one will see it.
-
PNW has been getting snow for basically the past 10 days, and it keeps piling up as none of it can melt. It's only up to about a foot where I am but that is crazy for this area. I cannot remember an extended period of snowfall like this in the 42 years I've lived here. School has been closed last Mon/Tues, half days Wed/Thurs/Fri, and closed this Mon/Tues. Mrs. Cool Chris (the teacher) is going to go Jack Torrence on the rest of us pretty soon.
-
We're gettin hammered here in Central Ontario. gonna see a total of about 25cms of precipitation - combination of snow, ice pellets (which is what it is now), snow, and freezing rain... then more snow (in that order). The Toronto District School Board closed down today - first time since 2011. It typically takes an act of biblical proportions to close them down, because it is virtually zero bussed students, so closing schools puts parents and thus the entire city into chaos.

took me and the kid just over 2 hours with shovels. as you can see the neighbors fence prohibits us from throwing it in that direction so we have to push it to an area that is more wide open. can't wait to clean up the stuff still coming down tomorrow.

Shheeeeeit!
Freezing rain here at the moment, and has been for about 3 hours, and will be until about 4am. Then switching to snow. Supposedly all day tomorrow.
Dis is fuq'd.

Anybody else on the East coast get hit by this latest storm yesterday?
Left work at like 8pm last night and the roads were pretty nasty. Went past a bunch of stuck cars that were just left there. And its icy as all hell this morning.

Lot's of businesses around me closed early last night. I was out at 6:15 this morning with the snowblower to clear what has already come down. I live in a neighborhood built in the early 20s, so a lot of the houses don't have driveways. The plows make it a real bitch. If you wait until the end of the storm to start clearing, you're looting at 3'-4' high mounds of compacted snow that have to be removed.

This firetruck went sideways at the top of the hill leading to my house. It's wedged between an elevated curb and a rock wall. I went out and offered them my snowblower, but they didn't want it.

Snow storm wasn't so bad over by me as they were hyping it to be. Maybe 6 inches when they said 12-16. However, the snow is super heavy and hard. My foot's been bothering me so I really wasn't looking forward to shoveling (I don't think my blower is good enough to do this heavy thick snow) and was lucky enough to have some neighborhood kids looking to earn some cash. They did a much better job than I would have, got to not hurt my foot further, and didn't miss my work meetings this morning.

I wan't snow! :'( Nowhere to be seen around my area anymore, we used to get alot when I was a kid.

I'd gladly give you mine if it were possible. Snow was fun as a kid, and just a huge hassle as an adult. There's not a single thing I enjoy about it. I mean, I guess I got to stay home today but WFH is pretty normal these days so not quite the same as a snow day used to be.
-
I just finished about 3 and half hours of snow removal and I have a snow blower. A big one. But this stuff is like fucking mud here. Heavy and wet. And tonight it's all going to freeze solid
-
I cannot stress enough how much I hate the snow. I love New York, but I would move to a warmer state in a heartbeat if I could.

I waited till mid-afternoon, and it was actually getting thicker and heavier as I worked. This morning I shoveled some of the deck and it was light and powdery. I finished about half hour ago, and it was a lot closer to what you saw.

During the winter months the days are shorter and darker earlier where I live so when you get home from work it's already dark but snow illuminates alot to make it a bit brighter and I miss that, it's also alot more cozy than fuckin rain that we have all the time instead during winter. I miss having snow during christmas as simple as that. Sure commuting during snow is a drag but i'll gladly switch rain with snow during the winter months.

I love it when it's coming down. Glass of wine, a fire, maybe some music... it's relaxing. But the cleanup blows, and there's nothing worse than five, six days later when everything is a sludgy, brown mess.

Yea, there's kind of this nice calm peace when it's coming down. I even stepped outside for a bit last night to enjoy that, but everything else is such a hassle. I HATE driving in the snow, and I hate how sometimes it takes forever for it to melt so as you say, it turns into a brown ugly mess.

On another note....y'all are a bunch of whiners when it comes to snow. It's basically all I drive in for work from the end of November to the beginning of March. And I do roughly 500 miles of driving every week. And I still love it!

Lake Tahoe area. There's snow on the roads pretty much all winter.
We drove across Wyoming a a few summers ago,and I saw those huge ass gates they use to close the highway. I remember thinking the snow must be ridiculous for that to happen.
We tried to make Lake Tahoe part of that trip, but we couldn't work it out.

I hate manual labor work to begin with but I'd totally have just done it myself if my foot wasn't bothering me. Was about to do it myself until there was a knock on my door. So yea, paying for it instead of doing it myself goes along with my general attitude towards outdoor stuff like my lawn that I have no desire to do myself.

Yes and it sucked. We did not get a ton of it but by the time I went to shovel, the thick bottom layer had frozen to the fucking ground. Between that and the cold weather, I couldn't ride for 10 days. TEN days :tdwn

Situation all over Italy basically....
Christmas: rain
Weekend after Christmas: sun
Today where many people (luckily not me) has to go to work in the office: snow
2020 until the end ;D

Surprised it's been so quiet here considering the Northeast US got completely slammed the last couple days.
I think I got like 16 or so inches, it's still snowing and will continue to today but it's very light now so if anything I'll need to do a light shovel later tonight or tomorrow morning

My little cheap electric powered snow blower was clutch, honestly didn't think it would work too well considering the amount of snow. It struggled, but got the job done.

I held out the first few years of being a home owner. My driveway is not that big, but as time went on, I figured maybe I need some help for when it gets bad like this storm. After seeing my neighbor blow through his driveway (and most of the sidewalk on his side of the street) with ease, I'm thinking of upgrading.
Also, it seems more snow is coming this weekend...
-
We got about 7-8 inches a week ago and then it snowed for 24 hours straight in Chicago (Saturday night through Sunday night), which dropped another 10 inches or so. My kids loved it....I went out 3 times to snowblow and shovel the driveway and sidewalks, and I was exhausted by Sunday night. I honestly spent almost my entire day on Sunday working on cleaning up snow, as it kept dumping more.
-
I bought a used Ariens five years ago for $250 bucks and it's still throwing snow like a champ. One of the best investments I've made as a home owner. I also live on a corner lot with street parking (no driveway), So I have about 200' worth of snow I have to clear that's all the shit the plows have pushed aside. It was almost 3' tall this morning and really compact from the plow. I couldn't imagine not having a snow blower.
-
We dodged a bullet. Woke up yesterday expecting 9 inches and got next to nothing.
And yes, snowblowers rule!
-
4 inches of slush

15" in Milford Connecticut. Just me and my shovel this morning. Its time this old man bought a snow blower.
That was my conversation with myself about a year and a half ago. It's still work with a snowblower, but not back-breaking. I blew my driveway this morning (phrasing!) and felt like a good workout, then shoveled about half my deck, and felt like I needed traction. :)
-
Took the plunge yesterday and bought my first snowblower.
I guarantee we won't get measurable snow for years now.
Had to find this. Finally removed the wrapping and the manual from my 'new' snowblower. Thing has sat in the garage for 2 years. Never started it before. Man, what a difference. I have a 3 car garage and a large driveway and this was nothing. The blower I bought 2 years ago is a 24 inch with a 208cc engine and serrated steel augers. Self-propelled with 6 forward speeds and 2 reverse. No way I would have been able to clear the snow with a shovel. Just tidying up and the stuff was wet cement heavy.
Biggest thing was figuring out how to not coat myself in snow with the crazy winds by me. First time was a mess. Second time I was a pro. Nice to finally dust this thing off and see if my $700 actually was worth it. It was.
-
It was like shoveling cement
That's the 2nd worst. The worst is when it rains, then turns to snow. It's like shovelling wet sand. And a snow-thrower won't "throw" that shit at all.
We didn't get jack squat here. Some mild flurries at the moment, but nothing even worth shovelling.
-
Got 10" or so in Fort Wayne from Saturday night into Sunday night. Highest single day total since the blizzard of 2014. We had been lucky to dodge most of the snowstorms that have come through so far, as they've either gone north into Michigan or south into Indianapolis. This one, though, was on a direct path for us. Looks like we've got more on the way this weekend plus a polar vortex. I don't mind the snow, it's the cold! I'm not looking forward to shoveling in single digit temps!
On a related note, now that my son is in kindergarten, I've come to the unfortunate realization that technology has killed the snow day. In our district, they are now "eLearning" days, where they have to do a whole bunch of assignments on their iPads. I was angry for my son yesterday! :censored :censored

Yuo haven't lived until you see the wind shift, you watch the snow swirl, and that line of fresh powder that you WERE sending into the lawn reverses track right back in your face! :) :) :)

I finally coated the inside of the chute on my snowblower with non stick cooking spray, which was amazing. The chute didn't clog with wet, heavy snow and it all came out. I'll do that again every time we get that kind of snow.

Been spared so far in central WI, maybe six inches total all winter, everything has been missing us to the south. We got a snowblower in the fall of ‘19 because my old man back wasn’t taking to kindly to shoveling anymore and it was heavenly using it last winter. Haven’t needed it yet this winter although we’re expecting a storm tomorrow.
Here is me in action using it for the first time last winter...

I haven't had to run my snow thrower either. I moved it from the back of the garage to the front about 2 months ago but as of yet, I've not even put gasoline in it. If I make it through the rest of February, I may not have to fire it up at all this winter! :omg:
-
Picked up some gas for the snowblower since we’re expecting 6+ inches, tried to start start it and.....nothing.
Neighbor and I worked on it for a while with no luck. Damn thing is only a year old.
-
We got about a foot over the weekend where I am (Chicago north suburbs). Fired up the snowblower. Electric start, fuck yeah! Never lets me down.
Moved a ton of snow off the driveway, the sidewalk, the neighbor's sidewalk, and the street in front of the house so we can park our cars instead of stacking them on the driveway. Good times. Seriously, it's such a monster machine, it's actually kinda fun to run it.

26-inch maw, two-stage, six forward speeds, two reverse, electric start, headlight. Chicago north suburbs, you do what you gotta do.

Do you know what you're looking for (serious question; I'm not busting your balls or anything). Those engines are fairly straight forward: gas, spark, and air. My experience? It's gas most of the time. Clogged line, gummed up carburetor, vacuum/pressure in the gas tank (loosen the cap)...
Mine is two years old, and it was gummed up a bit first start this year. I ran it on high choke for a spell (not the best for the engine) but it cleaned itself out.

Like Stadler said, it's likely gummed up carburetor.
Did you run it dry after last season? Do you use stabilizer?
I'm no expert except to say that I've paid "my guy" way too many times.
-
Picked up some gas for the snowblower since we’re expecting 6+ inches, tried to start start it and.....nothing.
Neighbor and I worked on it for a while with no luck. Damn thing is only a year old.
We were able to fire it a couple times but it died immediately. Spark plug is good, we think the primer button isn’t shooting gas into the carburetor, definitely seems like a gas flow issue.

I did not run it dry (rookie mistake), and I did not use a stabilizer. The more you know, right?

Get the carburetor cleaned out and you'll be fine. Look, everything I touch..breaks. I only know these things because I've lived them.
Don't buy gas in advance.
My guy put it like this.
Gas is like milk. Once you buy it, it starts to spoil. Stabilizer only retards the spoilage.
And it's that spoilage that gums up the carburetor.

After a few attempts this morning the snowblower fired off!
I now expect the snowstorm to be underwhelming.
-
We got a foot of snow yesterday - at least this time it wasn't quite as wet as last time and I was able to use the snow blower to get rid of it. Here's a picture my mom took

I got another 6 inches yesterday but luckily it stopped around 5 and it was light so my blower easily handled it in under 45 minutes before the superbowl began. I'm so done with this winter already although there's more snow expected later this week.

Lake Tahoe area. There's snow on the roads pretty much all winter.
We drove across Wyoming a a few summers ago,and I saw those huge ass gates they use to close the highway. I remember thinking the snow must be ridiculous for that to happen.
It's not so much for the total snow amounts (though that CAN be substantial too) as much as the drifting from the strong, typically north winds. That....or the ground blizzards they create. Sometimes you can't see but a few feet in front of you.
The snow fences help some....but not enough often times. Here's a humorous, but not far off wind sock sign for Wyoming.

First snow of the year expected in the next couple days in the Puget Sound area. Up to a few inches in place, which, in the NE may be a minor nuisance, spells doom for us here.

Your post would fit Nashville as well. We cannot drive in good weather. So far zero measurable snow. Our measurable snow normally occurs in March, if at all.

More snow last night into this morning.
The most annoying part for me isn't even the snow, its people calling out from work and me having to come in early as hell or do doubles :P
-
I used to work in Erie, PA, and I miss it. I would drive up from Philly on Sunday night/Monday morning, and this time of year I would hit snow about 2/3 of the way across PA. It would snow the entire week - fine, mist-like snow, the lake effect stuff - and on Friday night I would drive home to Philly and drive out of the snow about the same place. Probably half the weeks I was there in the winter it was like that. No huge accumulation, but just... there. I loved it.

Accurate. I remember when I lived in Fort Collins, if the wind was coming down the Front Range from Wyoming, it could be really brutal.
Where we are in Fort Wayne, the winds can be pretty nasty as well, depending on where you are in the area. Because where I work is surrounded by farmland, if it's windy, you know it the moment you walk out the employee entrance. I don't mind the snow, it's the cold and the wind.

I spoke too soon. The modules call for freezing rain, ice and then measurable snow in portions of the Southeast Sunday night and monday. If true, it will be a cluster fxxx.

We’re dealing with a cold snap here in Minnesota right now. At night, it gets down to about -30F and warms up to about -10 by the morning commute. I’ve joked with people that “At least it can’t snow when it’s this cold!” I’ve been dead wrong on that 3 times this week. It’s snowed a 1/2 inch to an inch overnight and it just creates an ice rink on the highways and road salt doesn’t work when it’s this cold. Driving has been miserable in the morning.
Monday morning it’s supposed to be around -40. Hoping it doesn’t snow
-
We need El Barto to weigh in here; his neck of the woods has been in the news for cold and I understand there MIGHT be a little snow in HIS forecast coming up.
-
Here in Mid-MO we'll be in the negatives in the evening and in single digits during the day until Tuesday. More snow is on the way.
We've had snow on the ground for over a week but for now, at least the roads are clear.
-
I'm over this cold snap. Spent an hour and a half clearing my driveway and sidewalks in -15 to -20 wind chills this morning. The wind needs to stop too. I live in a rural area in the middle of farm country and the wind just sucks. We only got maybe 2 inches of snow overnight but I had drifts of over a foot I had to clear.
Everything hurts and I still feel cold and I finished 2 hours ago.
-
About 6" where I live over the past 12 hours or so, which is not very common at all.
-

As of right now they're predicting six to nine inches on Wed. Really, though, that's not terribly uncommon for Dallas. Up until lately we tended to get snow once a year. It's been a few years, thoough. A few years back we got 14" in one day (which was a blast!). What's freakish is that we stand a decent chance of hitting a negative temperature this week. I believe that would only be the 4th time in 140 years of recorded history.
-
Most of you know I'm generally in the Seattle area. (about 30 miles SE of the city)
And I cannot believe the change in snow chances since I was a kid. In the 70s and 80s, it was fairly common to get a decent snow. Probably about 3-4 inches, about every 3-4 years, that stayed on the ground for about 3-4 days. Sometimes you had a couple storms over the course of a winter.
But man...it feels like YEARS since I've seen a decent *long lasting* storm in the puget sound region. I was so happy when we got about 6" in February of last year, but after waking up to it, it turned to rain by mid day, and had all washed away by the following morning. Pathetic.
All this week they were telling us that a huge arctic blast was coming in that was going to bring snow starting last Tuesday. But by Monday they had pushed it back to Wednesday. Then by Tuesday they were saying Thursday. Then Wednesday they said Friday. My foreman told the whole crew that if there was any snow Friday morning, it was OK to not come in. Friday got really cold...but not a single flake. I had to go to work outside in frigid cold conditions. Today finally brought some snow. I have about 2 inches at my house and it's continuing to fall very lightly.
What's weird is that I moved to an area of the foothills of the Cascade mountains... SPECIFICALLY picked this town to live in...because they were notorious for getting snow when everyone else was getting rain. But today? The winds are working against me. All my friends in the surrounding areas have between 6-8 inches, and I have *TWO*. And it will most likely be gone by Monday, leaving me to go back to work in just above freezing temperatures in the rain.
I want a REAL snow storm!! :'( :'( :'( :'(

I want a REAL snow storm!! :'( :'( :'( :'(
Can you imagine, though, how our region would handle a major snow storm, like they get out in the NE? I remember during a major snowfall years ago, riding back from the airport in a shuttle with someone from Chicago. He was quiet the whole trip, until he busted out with a "this how y'all plow roads out here?" He was appalled at the road conditions.
I do know what you mean in the rest of your post.

Just exasperated that I spent a whole week thinking I was going to get a 3-day weekend that never happened. My current work *crew* is amazing...but working conditions are among the worst I’ve ever experienced. So I’m frustrated, but otherwise fine.

We got Strong wind, Rain, Thunder, Lightning, and Snow...
-
4-6 inches of snow coming later today and into tomorrow, and it is now up to 6 degrees here. Feels like a heat wave after we were at 1 degrees a few hours ago.
-
Yup, it's snowy, windy and cold, today.
And I better get things done early today, cause the roads are going to ice up fast, and people drive horribly here in the snow.
-
No snow, but it hasn’t been above zero for about 48 hours, might get over zero tomorrow.
-
Nearly got up to 0oC around here today! We're supposed to get 20-30cm starting tomorrow, and going in to Tuesday morning.
-
Warm afternoon here. -2 F with a -22 F wind chill. For you Canadians, I guess that equates to -18 and -30, roughly. Weatherbug's icon for the weather in my area is an igloo. Wonder if they're trying to tell me something.
-
High of 16 down here, which for us is fairly chilly. Snow's been falling all day, but it's teeny-tiny flakes that just turn to ice when they hit the ground. I'll make a venture out a little later to see if there's even enough powder to fill my bong, but I really haven't seen much accumulation. That said, the forecast calls for a fair amount of it over the next day. If nothing else there might be a snow bong wake and bake in my future.
On the bright side, I made a lovely pot of soup, and it's a nice lazy Sunday stuck indoors. As opposed to the last 52 crappy lazy Sunday's stuck indoors.
-
That's crazy. We were 32 in N.H. today.
-
We’re supposed to get 1-2 inches in Fort Wayne tonight, and then 8-12 tomorrow night. We were supposed to get super cold this weekend, so I’m glad that didn’t materialize. I can handle the snow, I can’t handle the cold.

Soup is the BEST when it's cold and snowing.

Almost 40 degrees out today and I was literally wearing shorts :lol
Its been like below 20 for the past two weeks so I'll take it ;D
-
1 degrees here and snowing like mad. The good news is that our boss emailed us all last night and said to work from home today, which is double good considering the weather AND most of the customers whose accounts I manage are off today due to the holiday, so it won't be as busy a day as normal, with the exception of having to cancel and/or reschedule a million things due to weather delays.

My car said 0 today so I’m taking that as winter is officially over.
-
Pretty sure I shoveled at least a foot of snow out of my driveway this morning. Glad it was the powdery stuff. Freeways were in good shape, but even the main city roads were shit. Glad I don't live in Texas!
-
Hope you guys in the wrath of this snowstorm are safe, I'm going to play it safe as well and stay indoor today, it's a dangerous high of 66 today with slight windy conditions. Truly apocalyptic times.
-
Just like last time, I only got 2-3 inches total but I see drifts anywhere from knee to hip deep that I need to clear. Gonna wait until this afternoon. Even though we are having a heatwave and it is 6 F, the winds are still over 20mph. It's supposed to get all the way to 10 this afternoon and the winds are supposed to lower to around no more than 10mph.
I'm so done with this winter.
-
Well, crap. The snow was still coming down last night around 9:00, but my son had gone to work at 3:00 in the afternoon and would be coming back later. Meanwhile, the plows had come by a couple of times, so I went out to run the snowblower.
The electric starter did not let me down, but as soon as I tried to engage the auger, it made a noise and stalled. Tried it a few times, same result each time. I checked the intake, and there's snow from last time, which partially melted then froze solid. It's been single digits or below here for a week, so it's solid ice in there, and I wasn't going to be able to clear it with the stupid plastic tool they give you. Or anything else I had handy. I shoveled the walkway and a path down the side of the driveway for after he gets his car in, but I can't do the stuff at the end of the driveway (heart condition). It didn't look too bad, actually, piled kinda high but all fluffy. His car's on the driveway now, so I guess he made it in.
-
We hit double digits so I took advantage of that over lunch to clear the snow. We got about 3 inches but the winds did all the damage. My sidewalks were clear before yesterday. Today they were 25-30 inches high. So thankful I bought a big snowblower. The wall in the picture is about 28 inches high. A sidewalk on the other side of my driveway was almost 30 inches high and I had to clear probably 15-20 feet of it. The lower part of my driveway had maybe an inch of new snow. So weird how it was all spread out.

Just a bit of nomenclature. Rolling blackouts mean temporary shutdowns on a rotating basis so that nobody's completely without and you better distribute the load. Great strategy. Shutting people's power off and leaving it off for 2 days is not part of a rolling blackout. It's a blackout. I'm guessing people have seen a blurb here or there on the news about rolling blackouts in Texas. They're lying. There isn't any load redistribution. Texas's energy grid collapsed and they don't now what the fuck to do about it. And to be fair, these things happen. This is a freak winter storm we're having down here. Yet after two days they're still reporting it as occasional, temporary shutdowns to help manage the situation. The load of bullshit coming out of these people is mind-boggling. I'm looking forward to see some heads rolling, and because this is Texas and Governor Cripple is apparently livid, they will.
For my part, we've had highs at 22 and lows at -2, and my neighborhood went black early Monday morning. My condo was 44 when I woke up Tuesday morning, but I can deal with that well enough. Around 1700 it started dropping again (from 44) and I decided it was probably better to flee. I'm able to tough that out,but since they're not even admitting that the power is out in my neighborhood I have no reason to think they're wiling or able to fix it any time soon, Friday would be my guess, so no point trying to wait it out. I pow-wowed with some of my neighbors, and everybody who can is clearing out. The people that can't might very well wake up to freezing temperatures inside their homes Wednesday morning and the weather won't improve until the weekend, at the soonest.
To top it all off, the City of Dallas is pleading with the powers that be to tell them where they can shelter people without fear of getting the power turned off, and they're being completely blown off. "If we put people in this rec center can we be assured that you won't shut the power off there?" "No comment." Simply because they don't know what's going on or how to deal with it, while still trying to maintain some facade that everything is under control. Dallas is actually trying to stage DART busses at stragetic locations just so that people can go inside for a few minutes at a time to warm up a bit.
Free market capitalists love to point out that nothing's free and you'll always pay for it. "Free healthcare for all isn't free. You just pay for it elsewhere." Well, that low cost of living people move to Texas to take advantage of isn't free, either. You pay for it in myriad ways, and one of them is that when the ramashackle infrastructure fails they'll just leave you to fucking die while spinning the story to make it sound like it's all under control.

Yikes Bart!
-
My kid is a couple miles from Bart, and she's said - basically, since she's not as hip to the inner workings as Bart is - a very similar story. Her house is out of power and has been since... I think Sunday or Monday; her and her roommates have been staying with another friend and they just got power last night, but who knows how long it will last. The food distribution is open on her campus, but everything else is basically closed with no real clear end in sight. She grew up in the North, so "snow" and "cold" is nothing to her, but she and some of her friends are legit scared.
-
Holy fuckity fuck! That’s insane. A work colleague of mine has power, but is without water, and resorted to collecting snow in the bathtub to melt.
-
Debrakadabra posted that her pipes froze and busted last night. That is happening to so many there in Texas. That's scary because houses aren't insulated the same as up north I bet plus add all the mold this will cause.

Looking back, I've owned two Toyotas (cellica and cresida), an RX7, a 280Z, a Honda (accord), and three generations of BMW 3er. I don't know as any of them were FWD. While I still think that FWD is an abomination of nature, damn, those things sure do live for snow and ice. Had to borrow one to get back home, and driving a car that won't launch ass-first when things get hairy gives you a wonderful sense of invincibility.
Power's finally back on, but now the water is off. Burst pipe somewhere, but thankfully it doesn't seem to be an inside problem.

I can't speak to the Accord or the Toyotas, but the RX7, the Z-car and the BMWs weren't likely FWD. The best you'd get was the xDrive (all wheel drive) which is an on-demand system and is pretty good (not as good as the Subaru, though). Yeah, you feel invincible, but there's something to that pucker feeling when the back end shoots out to the side! :) :)

I'm over snow
Could barely get to work yesterday. First it was fluffy snow, but quickly turned to freezing rain and sleet. I've got FWD, but still it was a hot mess.
And then getting home last night and trying to shovel that thick, heavy, solid crap was no fun :tdwn

I'm over snow
+1, another solid shovel session yesterday, and there might be another one by the time I get home from work today

Man, seeing these stories out of Texas of people that get their electricity through this company called Griddy, they got bent over. Essentially, if you had them as the provider and didn't lose power, you get a nice bill for thousands of dollars. A retiree got a bill for over $16,000. Another lady said the company drained her bank account dry. The only thing that stopped them was the bank cutting them off when she hit $200.
My town locks us all in with an energy provider at a locked in rate every year. We have the option to do our own thing, but they always get us a really good deal. I pay $0.06595 per kWh. These Griddy people got jacked up to $9.99 per kWh! My most recent bill would have been over $7,000 at that rate.
My bill says the average temp for the billing cycle was 20 F. My bill is $94. Seeing these stories is just baffling to me.

Hey, they're free to take their business elsewhere. The market will sort itself out. ::).
The truth is that Giddy will back down a fair amount. Not only will they run into some kind of price gouging law, the publicity will bankrupt them in six months when the last of their subscribers jump ship. They might as well change their name to Valuejet after this. Also, this is yet another blow to ERCOT, which had to approve the rate increase. My hunch is that ERCOT gets blown up and replaced by something new and equally dysfunctional. Heads will roll, this was too big to ignore, but they won't be the right heads I'm afraid.
-
So just realized what Griddy is. I actually looked into it a few years back and wisely decided against it. Griddy isn't actually an energy company. It's more like Uber for electricity. In Texas, anybody that wants to can start up their own electric company, agree to purchase blocks of power from energy wholesalers, and sell it to consumers at an agreed upon rate. Green Energy Exchange has agreed to sell me electricity at $.068/kw.* That was presumably what GEX determined would be profitable. I'm guessing that they missed the mark this month, but they were likely well ahead of the game for most of the time. It's not going to bankrupt them or anything.
Griddy is actually a collective. For $10/mo you pool with everybody else to buy energy at the wholesale rate, which is in a constant state of flux. That wholesale rate changes every 5 minutes. Most of the time it'll be below what most people are paying, certainly below my .068, but sometimes it can go a lot higher. In this case that wholesale rate went from about $.03 to $9.0. I hate to put it this way, but these people kind of got what they signed on for. This isn't Griddy's fault. They signed on to fluctuating energy prices in exchange for saving a few bucks a month.
Moreover, since Griddy is entirely app based, you view your bill in realtime. A Griddy customer can go to the app and see what they're using and what they're paying at any time (which is why we were so quick to hear about this). When it went up to $9/kw they probably should have just shut the whole house down. They were armed with the knowledge that it probably wasn't the best time to be doing laundry or cooking a turkey in the oven. I know from recent experience that a 65ş apartment will take some time to get down to 45ş. If I find that my electricity rate has jumped to 9.33/kw, rest assured that I'm going full on Chuck McGill and terminating my service with an axe.

Yeesh. Well, considering I'm not one to ever gamble when I'm in Vegas, you can rest assured that I would never sign up for a service like that. There's no difference.
-
Griddy did inform their customers that they needed to switch providers before the big chill. Which is odd to me because root cause, to my understanding, was equipment failure so while they knew frigid weather was coming did they expect power grid failure?

I won't even sign up for a variable rate mortgage; no friggin' way I'm signing up for variable energy rates. :)

That's a good question. One of many. Really, this whole thing was an amazing clusterfuck, and one that honestly shouldn't have happened. This wasn't a sequence of unpredictable or unheard of events. There were no freak happenstances. This was just a bunch of people acting either negligently, criminally, or just plain greedily, and I'd love to see the appropriate heads roll. And as I said earlier, Griddy shouldn't be held up as one of the bad guys. Unfortunately, I have little faith that it'll be the appropriate heads on the block.

Like I said, I looked into it a while back, and what scared me off was a total lack of historical information. Plenty of people saying it saved them bundles, but at no point were they providing past numbers. I thought they were making it intentionally difficult to make a valid comparison. That said, they'll be an unfortunate casualty of all of this. Maybe they can change their name to AirTran and keep operating, but I'd be surprised if they had more than 3 subscribers right now; folks currently on respirators, out of touch with what's happening outside their hospital bed. It'll take time to put together a new group of guinea pigs.

My guess is that Giddy expected power grid failure. They probably had conference calls with ERCOT well before the weather event and they likely would have discussed the non-winterization of the equipment. I've lived through plenty of polar vortex's before in Texas that has extended all the way into Mexico and even Cancun and no problems with the grid.
El Barto, you're right it, it was a combination of negligence, greed and now that 20 some odd people have died - criminal.
And can someone find Rick Perry and Billy Jack his fuck-face? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVX-voqWuwY

A utility service called Griddy sounds like something that would exist in Fraggle Rock.

Maybe they could recruit Gritty to be their spokes-mascot?

This Texas fiasco just keeps on going. I know I saw that many board members of that oversight group or whatever resigned, now the co-ops are falling.

I think it's 100% driven by greed. The negligence and criminality are just symptoms of the greed. Next comes the scapegoating as the people who really caused this problem in the first place won't face any consequences because they're all rich and politically connected.

So not snow related but we had a Bomb Cyclone come through here overnight. We lost power around 5:00 this morning. Honestly, I can’t believe we made it that long. The wind has been wicked. Trees down everywhere and power out all over the place.
They said we’d get power back around noon. I don’t see it.

That thing fucked up our area good. Certain parts of the bay had 16" of rain in a 48 hour period. Power outages, streets flooded, all the good stuff.
On the plus side, it basically ended the wildfire season, and started us back from the brink of a water catastrophe. Lake Tahoe rose 6 inches, that's over 20 billion gallons of water. Some of the major reservoirs rose as much as 30'.

We're on the fringes of it where I am and I have sustained winds of about 30 mph. I had a branch in my driveway this morning, though no power outage.

Just heard that this weekend's rainfall was the equivalent of all of last year :omg:

Holy fuck.

I joked on Monday that we got a whole season of rain in a day. My sump pump was running every 2-3 minutes for hours. In 14 years in this house I can't say that has ever happened.
To flip to the snow thing and the posts I see I made about Texas, we have been told here in Illinois that the natural gas industry still has not recovered from the Texas fiasco and that we can expect much larger gas bills this year if we are on gas heat, which I am. They're saying expect to pay hundreds more than you did in previous years. Can't wait!
-

Not sure what's worse, 8 inches in a weekend or 8 inches in a year. (my ex can attest that the latter is weak as fuck)

Banged her twice that year? ;D

Just joshing!
Well, we are now 28+ hours without power.

I've heard atmospheric river before. Bomb cyclone is a new one to me though...and as your porn name you could call your 'finishing move' the atmospheric river.

Word. I watch my stepson when the power goes out. 12 minutes and he's like "where's the internet?". I remember having power out for three days when I was a kid - snow - and it was awesome. Outside the entire day sledding and building ice forts in the snow that the plows pushed up. Hot chocolate by the fireplace. Blankets. Flashlights. I loved to read and play Legos as a kid, and you don't need power for that. My dad put the food out in the garage (cold) and we'd use the grill to cook, or even the fire in the fireplace. I can't even imagine doing that today; today I'd fire up the generator, and, sans internet and cable, we'd be back to "normal" sort of. Wow, that actually bums me out a little; maybe I'll lie to the fam and say we're out of gasoline. Or the power cable broke. :)

HA! same for me (except for the 3-day outage). To the bolded part, our cable/modem is on one of the breakers powered by our generator, as is the downstairs TV ... so we lack for nothing.

When was that major north east power outage. 2003? lasted a few days. When it was gradually coming back on, certain streets would get their electricity back on before others.
I will never forget walking with a couple buddies around the neighbourhoods ( beers in hand. Come on, no power no law! Lol) The streets that got their power back were quiet, everyone inside. You walked to the ones still with no power; people outside bbqing, kids playing street hockey, biking and all that. Candles all around and just this laughter and ... life in the streets. Very cool.

The first night of the big freeze I went out walking around. Nobody, business nor household had power in my neighborhood. It was as dark as I've ever seen Dallas. The amazing thing that I discovered is that advertising never dies. No businesses had power, but the building signage was still lit up. The Doc-in-the-Box ER was closed; better hope for an ambulance. The giant 24 HOUR EMERGENCY ROOM sign on the building was lighting the entire neighborhood up. Same with Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, the taco shop, and the offices at Energy Square. Offices weren't powered. Just the sign out front. When the apocalypse comes and there's nothing left but the cockroaches, advertisers will still be reaching out to them. And mind you, I live across the street from an old folks home and an adjoining ER, neither of which had power. Old people, huddled together in the cafeteria, being lit up by the Tom Thumb sign across the street. Welcome to Texas.
-
3 times we've lost power for 5 days. 1st time we didn't have a generator for the 1st 3 days. They are never fun.
-
I cannot remember the last time we lost power for any length of time, meaning several hours or days. I recall it happening a few times when I was a kid, but never as an adult.

There was one here in CT back in 2010 that had some houses out for 7 to 10 days. It was a freak snow-storm on October 29th, so you had a lot of leaves and "fragile" branches that went down, taking out power lines. A friend of a friend of mine went to the end of their driveway, took a picture in one direction down their street, and the road was completely blocked by trees. They took a picture down the OTHER direction and the road was completely blocked by trees. It was brutal. Companies with power and with health facilities were opening their showers and bathrooms to employees.

So my father in law is a morning person...as in his best hours of the day are from 5am to 8am. If he's up at that time, you're up at that time to do something for him. He's a selfish asshole like that.
He comes over to our house at 7am on the dot every Sunday for me to balance his checkbook. We had freezing rain last night. Salt trucks took care of the roads overnight, but I sure as hell am not getting out of bed in the middle of the night to make sure my driveway isn't icy for him.
I went out and threw a little ice melter down early since my son was up at 5:20. But I only used a little and didn't want to stand out there in my pajamas for 30 minutes before sunrise coating the entire driveway. I did where he usually parks and the upper half where he would walk
Sure enough, he comes flying down the street, turns into our driveway too quickly and slides into our small stone retaining wall. No damage at all to the stone or his car, but he has the nerve to come in and tell me that my driveway is too icy, and my wife chimes in, basically accusing me of not doing enough for him....BEFORE SUNRISE
>:(
-
Oh, ffs. That blows that your wife didn't have your back.
-
She's stuck in the middle. She knows what a jerk he can be, but he's also her dad and she doesn't want to treat him poorly.
-

Disagreeing with him isn't treating him poorly. If you had thrown some water on the driveway instead, I can see her defending him, but this?
-
That's a tough situation to be in. I don't get along with my in-laws at all, and eventually I told my wife that while I'll be cordial when they are around I would rather never see them.
I would've not taken too kindly to him getting pissed for a favor I'm doing him by balancing his checkbook.
-

The correct move the next time this happens is to set up traps all over the driveway and front yard Home Alone-style. That'll teach him.
Puns aside, that sucks, Grappler.
-
Nothing like expecting everyone else to accommodate your inflexibility.
Does he bring an actual checkbook, with the check register and all that? I look at my online banking and investment accounts a couple times a week. I have never once, to the best of my recollection, balanced my checkbook.
-

Yes, he is almost 71 and still loves to write checks. We convinced him to let us do his bills online over the last couple of years.
He had two strokes a five years ago and became unsure of himself with numbers. So I make sure his register matches the online balance and pay whatever bills he has. He had to file bankruptcy due to medical and credit card debt when he was in the hospital five users ago. So that's when we took 9ver his bills to keep him from getting into trouble again.
I bought a bag of rock salt later on this morning and my driveway is bow clear and white/grey instead of a nice black. Blah.
-
I wasn't trying to pick on him, if that is what it sounded like. My father was an accountant for most of him working life and still does everything with pencil and paper. You are a good SiL to help him out.
-
No worries. He aggravates us because he spends more than his social security check each month. Which is one reason we do it weekly, so we can tell him when to go to the bank and transfer more money. It was our condition of helping him through the bankruptcy...we needed to keep an eye on his account.

14" here this morning, more coming this afternoon/tonight. Our dogs had some fun in it, that's for sure. I sure as hell don't know how I'd fare with this *without* a snow thrower - considering we have a 14-car driveway. It'd be a helluva workout to do that by hand, that's for sure. Took almost 90 minutes to do it with a snow-thrower!

It's just a long driveway. Would it be easier for you to envision if I told you it was 55 feet long and L-shaped?

Um.... not really; I have 10 acres and the previous owner got a tax break as a farm (they cultivated mushrooms, to eat not to space out on). We've debated doing something similar but haven't pulled the trigger. But I'm off the road. There are two houses in front of me on either side of my driveway as I head to the road. There are two full working farms - with livestock - about a quarter mile north of me, just over the Mass border.
-
So damn sore this morning. 8 car driveway. Serves me right for not buying the snowblower last month.

We’re currently getting hammered with snow in Northeastern Indiana. We’ve gotten over a foot of snow since yesterday afternoon, and it really hasn’t stopped. Plus, we’re looking at a 50 degree temperature swing between Tuesday and tomorrow. It was 52 on Tuesday, and today’s high is 19, with over night lows dipping below zero. Work closed due to weather for the first time in 8 years. Friday into Saturday’s over night low is supposed to be -8. We haven’t had much snow this year, until yesterday. I think we’re caught up now!
-
Yeah, a lot of the Midwest is getting it this week. It has been snowing pretty good yesterday morning here in St Louis. Not sure the exact totals in my area, but has to be 8-10 inches at least from the looks of it. Supposed to stop here in a bit finally and am hoping they get the roads good enough for me to back to the office tomorrow after working at home yesterday and today. We have the option for either tomorrow, but I'd rather be at the office. I am more organized and focused there.

Kev, how much snow do you normally get in your area?
-
Kev, how much snow do you normally get in your area?
It varies. Some years we will get a rough one like this, other years we will get a handful of snow events that are only a few inches give or take. It's St Louis, so we get it all, including the 100 degree days in the summer (which I will always take over any winter weather).
-
Sounds like up here in NH. We've had some light years of late with snow, though 6 years ago for a 2 month stretch we had 2 to 3 storms a week. 8 to 12 inches or better every week. That was brutal.
-
I'll take snow storms over tornado scares. It was like 9-10 years ago where I swear we had a couple of springs in a row where there was a crazy storm that was close to being a tornado every week for like a month. That shit is scary. I was like, this isn't Oklahoma, what the hell? :lol :lol :eek :eek

9" here at my house. It's been a while since it's been this much accumulation. Usually it's 2-4" and that's it. I've been working from home since Wednesday as well.

Luckily this storm didnt hit us too much and I did 2 rounds of shoveling last night so I didn't have too much today.

Kev, definitely on the tornadoes. I'm so glad we don't deal with that.

My mother always talks about the tornados from when we lived out there.

The byproduct of the Texas utility nightmare from last year finally hit like we were warned it would. I just got my gas bill and I was shocked. Went back into my history and the highest bill I ever had in 14 years in this house was $70. My average is always between $20-$50 depending on the time of year. My bill just came in at $120! Last month was $86. It's been cold, but not that kind of cold.
They warned us in the fall that we were going to be paying the price for Texas' screw-up. They weren't kidding.
Seeing as these severe weather swings are becoming more common, they better get their act together so we aren't forced to pay the price for their mismanagement (again).

The gas thing was funny. The electric companies lobbied the state to allow a surcharge to make up for their losses last year. On the basis that if they didn't allow the surcharges then consumers would see an increase in their bills (I shit you not) the state allowed it. Next thing you know the gas companies scream bloody murder "hey, what about us!" So Texas allows them to jack up rates because "well, it's only fair, since the electric guys got theirs." :lol
In the end, none of it will matter and none of it will be fixed. People will still move here because things are cheep. They'll bitch about it when they get what they pay for (like last year) and then move on. Texas only cares that business and industry are happy. We're simply fodder.
-
Yeah, I know nothing will get done. It just irks me that I am up here in Illinois where your 'disaster weather' last year is just another day here. In the same 14 years in this house I have had maybe 2 extended outages and those are usually caused by someone or something knocking a pole over somewhere. The worst outage was probably about 5 hours.
All Fall the news up here warned us. I didn't think much of it until that sticker shock bill. Even our gas company warned us and called out Texas as the reason for the sky high rates.
-
Ugh. I thought we were done for the year. You think I'd learn by now.

I was driving back from Raleigh this morning and it snowed for about an hour of the drive. It was in the 80's just over a week ago.
-
Currently 4 degrees outside.
The windows in my place are frozen shut, lol

We got significant snow three out of the last 5 days (probably 16 inches or more total at my house), plus yesterday was so windy it all blew back onto the driveway and roads. And it's been below zero for a few days in a row now too. This is the time of year I seriously consider moving someplace warmer. At least we're set up for it though. Roads are plowed quickly and houses are well insulated and heated. But it still gets very old fast in the winter.

Power's been out for about 16 hours now, with very little chance of it coming back on today - thank god for a hardwired/natural gas generator. (sorry King)
The wind is brutal. I've got 3 trees down (2 of them on my fence so I was out there with a chainsaw earlier). Snow drifts in some places are 5-6 feet high. There are spots on my driveway that are clear, while both my front and back covered porches have about a foot or more of snow piled up. I spent 90 minutes outside this morning clearing a path to my generator and ensuring the vents were unobstructed, then noticed the end strip of the vinyl siding that is the ceiling of my back porch had come loose. One strong gust of wind could've pulled the entire ceiling down. Snapped took me 15 minutes or so just to clear the stuff against the wall that was covered in snow just to get the step ladder in a position I could make the fix. Fortunately it snapped back in place. I popped a couple of screws in it (surprised there weren't any tbh) just to make sure it doesn't slip out again.
Oh, and apparently we're still in for another 30cms of snow by the end of day tomorrow. Good luck, Santa. I'd hate to be a parent trying to explain to kids how that fat bastard is gonna travel in this weather, when the power is out all over.
"Mommy, why won't Santa bring us heat??" :lol :lol
-
Power's been out for about 16 hours now, with very little chance of it coming back on today - thank god for a hardwired/natural gas generator.

Wow Chad. That blows.. Fuck.

I had to be out most of the last 2 days and it was brutal. The wind was just stupid. Never been that cold before in my life. I practically got frostbite just loading groceries into my car. We were sitting around -30F with the windchills. I think it got about as warm as -4F here yesterday without the wind. Thankfully, barely any snow but I drove through some pure whiteout conditions just from blowing snow. It's a brisk 4F right now with a wind chill of -14F.
-
Even though it's 4 F degrees with a windchill of -20 in Baltimore, I'm grateful to no longer be in Kalamazoo with all their snow. And, grateful that we haven't lost power, unlike a friend five blocks away since yesterday.
A couple of times over the years, a Ravens season ticket holder has invited me to go when his wife could not make it. One time for a MNF game where they beat Favre and the Packers 48-10. He tells me 'I never leave a game early'. Well, it was so cold and miserable that night, that with three minutes left, he looks at me, and his 'never' streak ended. :D
I got a call this morning. At least, in some regards, I've become wiser over the years. I kindly declined.
Good luck to all those not so fortunate with the conditions this weekend.

all the pics are on mrs.jingle's phone. I'll post a couple when I get the chance.

Stay safe mate.

We had a ton of snow over the past few days. Yesterday the roads were a gong show, and very icy. Now it is pouring rain. With all the melting snow, the risk is now flooding and possible subsequent freezing of the rain and melted snow. Fabulous.
-
Snow and wind seems to have abated. Sad for the road and power crews that will have to work today. I'll still be shocked if we get power back today.
Pics later ... though the pics I've taken so far don't do the scene any justice. This is/was the most intense storm I've ever seen in my 51 years on pale blue dot.
-
That's amazing Chad. But it sucks dogs big time. I'm glad you have your generator at least.
-
Yes - the wind has finally broke!
It's been so cold and windy that my 10lb Min-Pin when finally desperate, would go out and would literally be limping because his paws were that cold. He has pooed in the house a couple of times but at least pisses outside.
Fortunately, we didn't lose power (knock on wood).

Oh, that’s brutal to be without power on Christmas day. I hope it doesn’t spoil the day for you and your family.
-
Power came on about 10pm last night - 54 hours we had to "rough it" :lol. I don't know how our neighbours across the road managed. The investment of a standby generator pretty much paid for itself these past few days - it would've been hell otherwise. Some more snow fell overnight - but it looks like light/fluffy stuff. Possibly some more today.
-
Glad you have power back Chad! Stupid question but with the generator do you have full power in your house? Or does it only power the essentials like heating and appliances?
-

You can get a whole home generator, but we just got one that has 8-breakers, enough to power essentials - septic and sump pumps, furnace, water heater, and a variety of outlets throughout the house. We've got the fridges/freezer covered, but not the oven or other major appliances.
-
Glad to hear the power has returned. :)
-
If you saw the pics Chad sent me you'd be blown away with the amount of snow that dropped.

Yeah, there was more snow in those pics than my area has seen since the ice ages.

Just reading your posts about the weather. Glad to hear it's finally calming down a bit. And that you had some power. And especially heat.
Could you set up your generator to be able to use your oven or at least the stovetop if this went on longer? Or a microwave? Just curious.

Yeah, we had/have plenty of counter-top appliances that we're able to use - air fryer, kettle, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave etc... Could've got the crock-pot out if need be. Like I said "roughing it". :lol

The weather this Christmas has been something of its own. First we had a few days of freezing cold (-23 C / -9 F), before it suddenly shifted to rain and +3 C / +37 F. The rain froze to ice the second it hit the ground, turning every road and driveway into a skating rink. Lots of accidents reported from everywhere.
It's better today. We're staying put for one more day, letting the road crew do their thing making the roads safe again.
-
There's gonna be a few more flurries today, then weather above freezing for a week, with rain on Saturday, and 10C with even more rain by Tuesday. Prolly gonna be a shit-ton of flooding.

Oh for sure! We had water spill on the street from the culvert pipes that were jammed with leaves and then the whole street froze. Took 2 days for the town to salt and sand there.

Dumped 14 inches of snow overnight and it's still coming down for the next few hours. With the high winds, it's drifting up into doorways and windows...in fact I had to wear goggles to keep the snow out of my eyes while clearing part of the driveway. I'm going to wait until noon or so to clear the rest out.

We got a nasty ice storm on the way today.

I actually went to The Fine Line last night to see Kimbra. The drive wasn't great, but manageable. But if it was tonight or tomorrow night, I wouldn't see myself going. My wife and I, and some of her friends were planning to go to Trivia in St.Paul tomorrow, but unlikely and it'll probably be cancelled anyway.
-
The storm ended up worse than forecast. The official total for my community was 21 inches. The most wind protected area I could find in the yard had 24. I'm dugout, but there are neighborhoods that will be days getting clear.
-
We are right on the line; I woke up this morning and there is a fine glisten of ice on all the trees, and about an inch of slow. Not my preferred - I WANT snow - but it's beautiful nonetheless.
-
Trees are sagging quite a bit here with about 20mm of ice, and we lost power for a couple hours overnight. It's probably only a matter of time before some limbs start snapping - hopefully not over any power lines.
-
Got an alert yesterday saying we could be expecting our first snow at my elevation in 75 years. Thankfully it didn't happen, cause that would've shut down the whole area, but it's a guarantee all the bay area hills will be covered with it. Gonna be a trip for sure.
-
The high today in central VA is 81°, can y’all send some snow our way please?
-
We had a quick snow/ice storm blow through California last week, even at my house in the desert! Disneyland got some too. Crazy.
-
Bump!
Nice weather today. It's not even November yet! :lol

Ha! Calgary got snow earlier this week. It's been in the teens (Celsius) for us this week... but still raining/wet.
-
We got our first snowfall here in Sweden last Thursday (the 19th) but it went away over the weekend. I don't want any snow until at least early December.
-
I got to see the first snowfall in Scotland of the season while I was there for the last few weeks. Then came home to the first snowfall in the mountains. Weather people are saying we should be getting as much snow as last season. Last season we woke up to 3 feet of snow in our yard on Jan 1st, then another 3 feet a week later, and it just kept snowing through February :lol
-
2 inches of snow in Central WI this Halloween morning….the weather outside is truly frightful.

Oh wow!

Got our first dusting of the season. Rain/snow mix that stuck to the soft surfaces.
-
First snow in Chicagoland today, too.
-
Some nasty fucking weather here in the Lake Erie/Niagara region. Winds have been brutal the last couple of days, and we got a few inches of packing snow overnight. jingle.daughter and I were at the hockey game in Buffalo yesterday afternoon (4pm start), and there was an EMS alert that lit up everyone's phones during the game - travel ban in Buffalo starting at 9pm.
It's supposed to continue snowing here for the next three days, accumulating 4-5 in each day.
-
I have never seen snow, and I am pretty fine with that. Maybe when the kids are older and I get over travelling anxiety, I will try and see it.
-
I've been in North Carolina for 6 years (moved from Florida) and snow is still a novelty to me. I love it, but we never get enough here for it to be a real problem.
-
I'll keep NC in mind if we ever decide to move from here.

Must be serious if there's a travel ban.
Last day of freezing temperatures here, we had -22°C (-8°F) yesterday and the forecast is 0°C (32°F) for tomorrow. But yesterday morning it was really beautiful, sun and lots of snow on the ground. I posted the pics on Strava, might as well share here:

Don't unless you have to move here. I'd love to move back to Florida but the job pool is really limited for me there, and I do not want to go back to working in hospitality.

Yeah, we aren't going anywhere unless we absolutely have to.

Currently -14F with a wind chill of -37F west of Chicago. I was smart, unlike my neighbors, and did not clear my driveway on Friday during the lull after the first storm. I woke up Saturday morning and went right out. The wind had already did a lot of the work for me and the snow was much lighter and not as much of a slushy mess. Had to run to the store later that day and as I return home what do I see, but both my neighbors out clearing their stuff a second time.
Looked at some videos from Buffalo this morning, holy crap. That looks just brutal.

We've been lucky in New England. It's colder in Kansas City thank North where I live in N.H.

Is that like Russian Facebook?
Nah, that's Vkontakte.
Strava is a site/app for physical activity tracking (running/cycling/skiing etc). Ironically it's blocked in Russia, have to use VPN to access it. :lol

I'm probably sounding ignorant, but I feel like if something was blocked in Russia, I don't know if I'd want to get around it.

It's not blocked by the government, it's blocked because they technically no longer provide their services here.
Same with new music, for example. As far as I know, there's no legal way to listen to anything from InsideOut (and many other labels) unless you buy a physical album (that's still possible, but often it could be months after release day before it's available in the stores). The new singles/albums are blocked on YouTube by the labels, do not appear on Russian streaming platforms, and other streaming platforms (like Spotify) also no longer provide their services here. Can't buy it anywhere from abroad either (like on bandcamp) as our cards don't work outside the country anymore. I couldn't even donate to DTF this time when bosk was running the donation thread.
Everyone I know around my age uses VPN nowadays. Fun times.

We got 3-4 inches of snow in central Virginia yesterday/last night. I made snow ice cream and it turned out very tasty in spite of the fact I didn't have enough vanilla extract to do it right :)
Looking forward to doing some wildlife photography today while the snow is still around.

Got a bit this morning

I'm heading outside now to plow; I think we got about five inches. Some of it was already starting to melt. Though we might get more Thursday night and Saturday (I'm probably 45 minutes N or maybe NNW of Chino).
