Title: DT collection
Post by: rcseeley421 on November 02, 2010, 03:35:22 PM
I have been collecting DT memorabilia for years now and I've racked up quite a collection of cds, dvds, tour programs, vinyl, you name it. I think in the calm before the storm of 2011 brings a new generation of DT-mania, we should start a thread about our collections. Photos, lists, anything goes. ;)

Our user ZepellinDT has an impressive collection, to say the least!

Could I get a list of stuff he has? Ive read about him and he sounds like the DT guru around here and I'd love to see what's behind that persona. :D

He's definitely the memorabilia guru here on DTF. :D Although he is quite humble when comparing himself to some other, non-forum collectors.

We'd need to come and post his collection himself, it changes all the time!

I don't have Zep's list, but a quick scan of his old posts reveals this pic of his DT collection as of maybe 2 years ago:

DT related (Picture is probably about a year old):

My DT collection isn't too solid. I kind of had a "fall out" with DT so I never even finished getting all of their albums (well, only Systematic Chaos).

CDs:
WDADU
Images
Live at Marquee
Awake
ACOS
Falling Into Infinity
Once in a LIVEtime
Scenes from a Memory
Six Degrees
Train of Thought
Live at the Budokan
Octavarium
Black Clouds and Silver Linings (3CD Set)
Prog Nation 2008 (Fanclub CD)
Tokyo 95 (official Bootleg)

DVDs:
Live In Tokyo/5 Years
Metropolis 2000
Live at Budokan
Score
Chaos in Motion
Santiago (official Bootleg)

Vinyl:
Black Clouds and Silver Linings

Autographed "Octavariun" and "ACOS" CDs by Mike, as well as an autographed poster of him.

Might be missing a few things as I'm not at home so I can't check.

I'd conservatively estimate that I have a little more than half of what Zepp does, but I'm pretty picky about what I want to collect.

Still, I'm sure I've got a few things he doesn't have.

It used to be a lot easier (and less expensive) before Dream Theater became really popular (relatively speaking).

My Rush collection is actually bigger, but I'm pretty sure I'm just a middle-level collector in the Rush world.  I have a huge Fish-Marillion collection too, but I stopped collecting Marillion after Brave came out.

If you're looking for volume, Zepp is the Dream Theater collector around here (although there are a few people around on the internet that might have more.)

Yea, I'd say Zepp kills in this thread.

The only thing I own that probably no one else has is a high school yearbook from Moore, Myung and Petrucci's graduating year.  I live on Long Island and was able to get it about 5-6 years ago.  It's not previously owned.  It's in mint condition.

Oooh oooh oooh... scan!!! I want to see their senior portraits and what their quotes/stats were. LOL

Seriously though, I think we'd all like to see that. I'm fairly certain JMX will look the same.

Here's a link to a picture of the yearbook: https://www.themooreatorium.com/id204.html
Here's a link to Kevin Moore's photo: https://www.themooreatorium.com/id134.html

I'm pretty sure Petrucci's yearbook photo has been posted elsewhere or is on his personal website.  I don't have it scanned.  I know I've seen it online though.  The weird thing is that Myung doesn't appear in the yearbook and isn't in the list of those "not pictured."  It's as though he didn't attend the high school.  But I know for sure that he graduated that year with Petrucci.  It's weird.

At that school district's public library, the yearbook has a special section in it where graduates posted personal messages to each other.  Petrucci and Moore posted exact same messages in which they cited a certain party and doing Yes covers.  It was cute.

Yeah, overall it's quite lame compared to what some of you all have, but I'm proud of it as I acquired it over a year. And yes, anything that mentions DT is in there and even side projects. My prized possession in there is the autographed Charlie Dominici Demo CD owned by him.
Here's link to the cassettes and the demo signed by Charlie                                                                                                  https://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu117/Oblivionfan10/IMG_1874.jpg?t=1288750836 (https://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu117/Oblivionfan10/IMG_1874.jpg?t=1288750836)

Let me ask you: which DT albums/live albums are on vinyl or cassette?  Is there some kind of extensive resource that gives all this information?

Here's mine, it's pretty much all of their main studio and live albums. I've got most side-project things too. Hoping to get started on the Ytse Jam Records stuff soon.

As far as unique things go, I have a wallet and a clock with the majesty symbol on them that I made with a laser we had at school. Can't find a picture at the moment.

I <3 these threads =).

I actually haven't added a whole lot of new stuff to the collection in the past 6 months or so.  Things started getting ahead of me a bit... gotta start picking it up again!

I still haven't compiled any single complete list of what's in my collection, but I've got an excel spreadsheet that covers most of the CD/DVD/Vinyl/Cassette stuff.  But that still leaves out all the posters, shirts, and other bizarre uncategorizeable memoribilia.  Is there an easy way I can upload/share the excel file for anybody interested in seeing what's on the list?

Maybe I should take some new pictures too...

Very, very nice.

Lol... thanks.  And yeah, I'm pretty anal and OCD when it comes to organization.  (For example, all my band t-shirts are organized in my closet alphabetically by band).  If we have time on the 16th I can give you a personal tour of the collection if you're interested.  I'm only like 5 minutes away from Oheka Castle.

Sounds like you have a pirated (non-official) copy. AFAIK, all the DVDs  from YJR have always been released in traditional DVD cases, and CDs have always been released in jewel cases.

Well... I've been building this collection for about 12-13 years now, and I spend a LOT of time hunting for deals, so I amassed a lot of my stuff at relatively low prices before DT's popularity skyrocketed, and I probably haven't spend nearly as much as people seem to think... I'm currently a lawyer, but most of collection was built while I wasn't even really working.

Franz's collection is, without a doubt, the largest non band member DT collection in the world.  Although I do have a few things he doesn't :P.

^^^ Well, he's in his 50's and I'm pretty sure is not married and doesn't have any kids... I'm not sure what he does for a living, but I would imagine that situation allows you to have a little bit more disposable income.  Plus, he's been collecting for probably 15 - 20 years now, and probably gets some decent hookups being the Vice President of the French DT fan club.

Well. that's pretty cool than. Especially scoring that WDADU Album release invite.

I got that straight from Charlie D.  :)

I've got one of those too. As of now I'm keeping it unframed and unsigned. It's sitting in a scrapbook with various Majesty press photos and other materials. I got it at a record show more than 10 years ago.

I'm actually going to a record show tomorrow in New Hope. I don't expect to find much, but the only way to know for sure is to go. Hopefully prices will be reasonable. It's a crapshoot these days.

Um, I have Images & Words: Live in Tokyo on VHS.  And Images & Words and Awake on cassette.

And that Systematic Chaos promo print signed by all 5 members of the band.

Oh, and the event shirt from the RCMH show.  That's it.

Just wondering, does anyone else have the DTSOM official bootleg DVD in a folded card sleeve. I ask because all the pics I've seen are in normal DVD cases and mines isnt :S

Matt

Sounds like you have a pirated (non-official) copy. AFAIK, all the DVDs  from YJR have always been released in traditional DVD cases, and CDs have always been released in jewel cases.

Oh dear, looks authentic enough to me, I'll post some pics later, and let you expert collectors decide

Heres a link to a Photobucket album containing some images of my copy:

https://s1130.photobucket.com/albums/m532/MajorMatt/DSOTM%20Bootleg/

Hopefully someonecan shed some light on whether or not it is pirated. If this is the case it is a very good job, the Disc looks exactly the same as other YJR stuff I have and the sleeve has a very good professional print job done.

Thanks,
Matt

All I have:
CDs -
When Dream and Day Unite
Images and Words
Awake
A Change of Seasons
Falling into Infinity
Scenes from a Memory
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Octavarium
Systematic Chaos
Black Clouds and Silver Linings

Live Scenes from New York
Live at Budokan
Score

DVDs -
Images in Words Live in Tokyo/ 5 Years in a Livetime
Live at Budokan
Score
Chaos in Motion

Question:  I had let a friend borrow Live at Budokan, and he lost the cd case.  I hate having cds without cases, so I want to just buy another copy now.  I've seen some that the majesty symbol is yellow on the front.  On the one I bought it was barely visible, like a light grey color I think.  Is the one with the yellow symbol a newer print or a knockoff?

No it was bought new from eBay here in the UK as a gift for me. It was bought from ebay to save the time of shipping it from the States.

I guess buying from eBay also increases the likelyhood that you get pirated goods.

Sounds good.  I'm already well on my way.

How do you guys find the obscure stuff....like the IaW vinyl, for example?  Just wait for it to crop up on ebay or something?  I'm not really sure how the "hunting" process works...

Sometimes I'll hear/see something come up, but I usually don't care at the moment.  Do you usually buy something anyway, since you have the opportunitye, in hopes that you will want it later?

Is the one with the yellow symbol a newer print or a knockoff?

It's an earlier mispressing... I think it was on the first pressings from the UK and maybe Korea or something?  It wasn't supposed to be yellow, but the yellow ones are still legit.

I usually just keep an eye on ebay and look for stuff with good prices.  If its somethign super obscure I'll usually try to grab it when I can... but with stuff that pops up semi-regularly or even only once in a while, I lean more towards hunting for good prices.

Some tips that definitely help -

1) Run the occasional "titles and descriptions" search.  Sometimes you'll find some rare stuff that way that isn't listed in the auction title.  (That's how I snagged my original, still-sealed WDADU longbox CD.  Some guy was selling a bunch of old longboxes and that one was thrown into the mix).

2) Make sure you search is set to include items from international sellers.

3) Run the occasional search for "Dream Theatre".  People mispell the name all the time, and sometime you can find stuff that way that most buyers miss by only searching "Dream Theater".

^ Thanks man!   :hefdaddy

Oh yeah one more question.  Do bootlegs count towards your collection?  I am really broke and would rather spend time stocking up with sites like trialoftears.net and nickeh.com, since all I have to pay for is blank CD's and a sharpie.
Title: Re: DT collection
Post by: ZeppelinDT on November 08, 2010, 09:21:45 AM
I guess it depends on your perspective.  I personally don't collect bootlegs at all, other than a couple of especially unique ones here and there.  Others seem to feel differently though...

That reminds me. I'd still like to find a copy of that mispressing.

As for me, I'll find stuff at record stores or record shows.  Although, I used to be able to find a lot more stuff than I do now.

I just collect stuff that interests me.   Anything that is promotional usually interests me.

I collect bootlegs, but I would only pay for "silvers" which are mostly from the days before file sharing was wide spread. I still collect CDR boots, but I'm not really as active as I once was and there is a lot more to choose from than there used to be.

Just curious, but what do you do for a living that allows you to spend what seems to be an incredible amount of money on DT merch and rarities

Also, this is my favorite DT collection
https://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2363241&high=franz (https://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2363241&high=franz)

Franz's collection is, without a doubt, the largest non band member DT collection in the world.  Although I do have a few things he doesn't :P.

I have to admit you're right, Chris. You have incredible items I don't think I can get one day  :azn: Regarding your interrogations, I'm near of my 54th anniversary, I'm not married and I don't have children. I'm working as commercial agent in an internet/phone company for almost 35 years. I know the band since April 17th 1989 and I'm seriously collecting since 1992. I've seen the band 36 times in 9 different countries. You can see my face on the Metropolis 2000 dvd / Photos section / 7th minute... I'm wearing a sleeveless jean jacket and a "Vanden Plas" T-shirt...

I recently (between sept. 10th and dec. 8th) had some problems updating my collection but things are OK now : Check it here :https://ymfr.free.fr/index.php?title=Accueil (https://ymfr.free.fr/index.php?title=Accueil)

I got the 12 (and a half) studio albums, I think all the official live albums and dvds and almost all of the 'official' bootlegs. So it's probably easier to say what I'm missing. I still need to get my hands on Santiago, Chile 12/6/05 and Bucharest, Romania 7/4/02 DVDs, especially Bucharest, I'd kill for that. Also missing all the 'Lazy Tomato' Liquid Tension releases which I am certainly interested in.

Then I have over 100gb of fan/unofficial bootlegs and other obscurities on this computer. It's out of control, I've sorted a lot of it but realistically I've only listened to maybe quarter of it all and that's taken me years.  :lol I would like to collect more physical boots but can't always justify spending money on these obsessions.  :xbones

Would love to start collecting vinyls but again.. need to justify it or have some extra spare change one day.

Here is a summary of my physical collection based on the different categories:

Studio Albums – all including "A Change of Seasons"
Live Albums - in CD form - only if they are different from DVD release
Compilation - Greatest Hit (...and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)
Single - Physical CD of "Through Her Eyes"
Video Albums – all and in Blu-ray when available
Fanclub Release - Romavarium DVD
Other - Gigantour DVD

I’ve also got digital only copies of nearly every other release.  That brings my calculation for completeness to 98.6% complete.  They only thing I’m missing is the “A Walk Beside the Band” DVD.

For unofficial bootlegs, I'm just getting started and consider them to be frosting on my chocolate DT cake.

It occurred to me that people may have different views on what is the complete DT collection.  I am proposing the following.  If you have a different idea, let us know.

Studio Albums (12)
Live Albums - CD (3)
Compilation Albums (1)
EP's (2)
Singles - Physical CD (5)
Video Albums (8)
Official Bootlegs (22)
Fanclub Releases (14)
Other (4)
1. The Atco Demos
2. Gigantour DVD
3. Lifting Shadows Companion CD
4. Raw Dog

Edit - Ok, I was really short sighted (see post below from bl5150) We need to include "speciality releases" like LPs, Long boxes, books, clothing . . . well it looks like I need to revise my "completeness percentage."  . . . . sheesh, I've got a lot of work to do . . .

Overall my DT collection isn't anything special .............all the studio albums , a few live ones ( Japan, Marquee, LALP etc...) , Cleaning Out The Closet and a few official boots.  I used to have a couple of JP Ibanez guitars but they're long gone.

If anything my "Images and Words collection" is the pinnacle of my DT stuff - I recently posted this photo in my Top 50.  It's the I&W sealed longbox with expanded art on the front left. Others……..original German pressing, white Brookvale , red/gold swirl Brookvale sealed No 6 and another red/gold unsealed signed by MP.  There's a Japanese I&W tour book somewhere about , but not in the photo.

The only other impressive DT collection I have is clothing  ;D

I have:

-An hourglass FII promo item
-Japanese tour books of ACOS, Awake, and Images
-All of the US tour books (or at least most of them)
-Autographed copies of most studio albums (including ACOS) and original members. I think I might be missing Images, but I don't know.
-I have two DT Majesty symbol rings (by a dutch jeweler during SFAM era I think)

I have all DT fanzines, many magazine articles, XMas CDs (all), drumstick, autographed drumheads, and some other items I can't remember.

Right now my collection is in boxes since I moved and never opened them up. If anybody is interested in something, let me know and for the right price I might part ways (especially the japanese tourbooks and the extra ring)

The last time I saw ZepDT, I think the topic came up of hosting a display of his collection in the venue prior to the next NY-area DT show.  His collection is just so wonderful that it deserves a stage, just once.  We weren't really sure how to go about making that happen.  I did shoot off an e-mail to whatever contact address was on Petrucci's website, but never heard back.  I still think this has to happen one day though.

I've actually been trying to get in touch with the people at the Long Island Rock and Roll Hall of Fame so I can loan them some of my stuff and have them set up a DT exhibit, but I'm starting to lose faith that they'll ever even manage to get a physical location.  I met a rep of theirs in a local library a few months ago where they were promoting themselves and I told the lady my story and she seemed interested and took my contact info, but I haven't heard anything since.

I actually might start selling a few items here and there in the near future... It's been years since I've added anything new and half my stuff just sits in the back of my closet now.  I think the most recent stuff I've got is from Systematic Chaos... :/

Different strokes for different folks, but I think you're missing out. At the very least, I'd recommend the FII demos since several of the songs are significantly different, there's 5 songs that didn't make the album (6 if you count the instrumental version of Metropolis part 2) and the sound quality is great for demos. But the other demo releases are also worth it, IMO just to hear the differences between them and the album versions.

Haha, you just reminded me, I was gonna respond to that demo comment aswell but forgot or couldn't be bothered or something.  :P

But just to echo Scotty's thoughts, the demos are totally worth it, all of them IMO and one would me missing out if they dismissed them as uninteresting.  :tup

*Takes deep breath, cracks fingers*
- Falling into Infinity demos would be the best example because they have significant differences to the final product but most of that has been discussed extensively.

- All the others have enough curiosities to interest most fans; the Images & Words demos are great because we have a younger James nailing all the vocals. I thought some of those Atco demos actually had stronger vocals than I&W sessions sometimes. And the vocalist audition demos on various songs are certainly an interesting curiosity. As is Erotomania being part of Pull me Under, very bizarre.

- Even the Train of Thought instrumental demos are quite interesting because although the arrangements are mostly the same, you'd be surprised how many more details you notice in the songs with the absence of vocals (anyone that's listened to the BL&SL/ADTOE instrumentals knows what I'm talking about). Not to mention, we have some different/alternate solos by John and Jordan sometimes which will surprise you if you're familiar with the regular Train of Thought.

- The Awake demos are probably the least interesting compared to the rest (imo) but mainly because they are relatively of worse quality to the others (save for some Majesty stuff) but not to undermine their relevance. Still got some amazing vocals from James, where again; some moments come across clearer (unless it's just me), I swear I can understand his annunciation better on a lot of the higher vocals (everyone that's digested Awake fully has to know what I mean by this  :lol). Not to mention we've got some slightly different keyboard patches and sounds from Keven that you won't find on the final version, and an interesting longer version of The Mirror with the 'Lie instrumental' still intact.

- When Dream and Day Unite demos can be interesting, but you probably have to already like that album a fair bit to bother with these because it's a LOT more WDADU than anyone is used to.  :xbones It's got instrumental versions of everything which is quite interesting to hear extra detail (too bad about the quality though) and all the pre-production and extra Charlie stuff.

- Then the Majesty demos, I think any dedicated DT fan has to at least check these out at some point, pure recorded history here but don't necessarily expect to find pure gold, there's certainly some gems here though. Start of a legacy.  :millahhhh

That's enough rambling from me, but hopefully I convinced someone to check out the demos.  ;D

I have the Six Degrees tourbook signed by the band at an Albuquerque show back in 2002 I think...

I also have a shitload of bootlegs (audio and VHS)...Not sure where they are right now.

I have a sweet spot for the Train Wreck bootleg from the Phoenix show in 2000 I think. The guys screwed up in Metropolis. 8-19-00 was the date for that show.

The Orlando at the HOB that streamed on the web is also very good. The Graspop Festival fanclub cd is also great. And the Unplugged show. I think those are my favorite boots

That's cool, I've never heard the Train Wreck bootleg.  I usually stay away from the Metropolis 2000 bootlegs as it was a static set and I'd seen it live a number of times.  I have the Orlando HOB, which I recorded from the live stream onto a cassette tape!

If that album and tour weren't a huge favorite of mine, I'd offer you my tour book.  At one point I tried to get all of tour books, but decided against it.

Marco it did exist at one time. I taped it, but that show was part of the west coast swing that I did of I think 6 shows in a row for me. Somewhere along the line I misplaced the DAT's. I'm going to guess they got left in a hotel room in some city. At least Mother, Father did get released.

If someone goes out of their way to offer me something in the mid to high end of that maybe I would.  But I think I'd rather keep it.

I would part with many of my Dream Theater items, but at the moment that Awake LP isn't one of them.

Someday I will lay everything out, Box Sets, all Fan Club CD's and DVD's, Sealed Scenes From New York Box with T-Shirt...etc., but these are my favorites....all 4 Vinyl Test Pressings of Awake, I&W, Falling Into Infinity, and SFAM. The first 3 had 24 made, SFAM had only 5...this is Number 1. The Images And Words is Number 2, The Awake and Falling Into Infinity are Number 8.

That's not bad.  Most I've seen online seem to go for double or triple that if not more.

Never understood the idea that people would want to pay more for something they could get for less, but there are quite a few things I don't understand lately.

I don't have anything really weird or unusual.  I have the signed promo lithograph for Systematic Chaos that available as a gift for preorders (500 or so), and I have I&W Live in Tokyo on VHS.  And the cassette of Awake.

I don't have the patience to lay out everything and take photos of it all, besides most of it is packed away for the move.  Maybe when I move into the apartment and have to unpack everything I'll do it.

The only thing unusual I might have is the Awake-era flag... got comments from all of the guys on that one.  Even their tour manager (or the guy I assumed was their tour manager) made a comment about it... asked me if I made it!  I honestly have no idea where my wife found it.

The Awake cassette is VERY cool to me... the only cassette I have of DT is I&W.  I remember that day in 7th grade... man I was so excited to get that thing home and blast it!  I even remember the smell of the tape when I opened it; it had an industrial smell that was quite "pleasing to the nose."  Still has the smell...

Yeah, I remember the cassette smell.

Interesting thing about the Awake cassette: it lacks Scarred.  Running time limitations.  For some time after release, I didn't know anything about Scarred.  Imagine my surprise when I finally upgraded to CD and discovered an unbelievably awesome new song!

I didn't know about the cassette not having scarred. I was also quite surprised that up to Octavarium, DT still released on cassette.

I picked up this Illumination Theory picture disc off Amazon a couple of months ago.

*snip*

That was the Independent Record Store Day release from a year or so ago. If you paid more than $13 for that, you paid too much. You can still find them in stores for that price.

I paid $16 for it and since I've never seen them anywhere in a store, being that I generally don't go to stores to buy music, I'm not going to whine about a few dollars.

That's not bad.  Most I've seen online seem to go for double or triple that if not more.

Never understood the idea that people would want to pay more for something they could get for less, but there are quite a few things I don't understand lately.

To be fair, if you have to spend a few dollars on gas to get to the store, the cost basically offsets.

Well, sure. A few dollars more is fine. What I don't get is the quite a bit more than that. And the shipping offsets the gas unless you're getting it shipped free.

How much have you seen it go for?  I'm surprised I never came across it on ebay.

I don't really check that often, but I checked a few weeks back and there were a bunch of them in the $20 to $30 plus range and a few for a little less than that.

I have to assume you are talking about the felt itself. The fabric is a special "speed felt" that can be printed and sealed just like regular poker speed felt. I found a supplier that would print a custom design then i hired a local graphic artist to turn my vision into what you see (his product turned out better than I thought it would). When the fabric came in I built the table.

Each of the scrolls under a flaming heart is a title of a different album. The storm thing in the middle was the designers idea to pull from "Black clouds and Silver Linings" to highlight the logo.

I hope this helps.

I wish the band actually saw this

That's actually the Dream Theater lullaby CD.

Of that group there, I like the Scene From A Memory and Antiquities boots.  I also love all of the Instrumental CDs.  I really enjoy listening to the old stuff they did even if it was a bit amateurish at times.  Now if you want to know my favorite DT boot in general, that's a lot harder to figure out.  I have hundreds of boots in some form, most lossless downloads. Though, I do try to buy silvers every so often.  So to pick a favorite boot overall I would have to sit and figure it out.   ;D

Indeed.  I have hundreds of boots, but I always make sure to get the shows I have been to.  My first show was the Birch Hill show when they played the new version of ACOS for the first time which made it extremely memorable. Not just from a being there perspective but for an important date in the band's history.

I have these, but mine don't have custom covers.

The Beacon show from the following night is also out there somewhere.

Being at those two shows and what became the Live Scenes show, I have to say those back to back shows were even better. I wish they had been professionally recorded. I consider those to be more of a highlight than the Live Scenes show.

Ummm...hate to break it to you RtK, but that ain't the CiaW single. Perhaps it's a DT bootleg entitled CiaW, but it ain't the single. Tell-tale sign is the fact that the DT logo isn't on the cover. And there were two versions of the single, both of which were promo only - one with a cover, and one without, as can be seen here:

Look between the SFAM and the I&W Ytse Jam CDs.

Duh....

I was looking for the Caught In a Web promo CD single with the spider on the cover. That explains why I missed it.

Thanks.

Yeah, that's a bootleg of a show from the first leg of the Awake tour... Seen it pop up now and then, but definitely not official.

That's terrible.  That's like when I lost most of my boot collection when I moved into the last apartment.  Luckily, I found the box of Grateful Dreams boots. However, I lost a whole binder of regular boots, a spindle of boots that Wey burned for me, and a spindle of boots that Sewer Rat burned for me.  So fucking pissed at that.

I think it's Dutch?  When I was still actively collecting that was at the very top of my want list for the longest time.  Never did manage to get my hands on a copy.  Saw it up for sale on eBay once or twice, but it always went for crazy money.

Title: Re: DT collection

Yup.  I spent many years looking for it.  I actually ALMOST had it once.  I got outbid but the person who outbid me turned out to be a fake bidder,, but it created a huge jump in the price.  I don't remember the exact numbers but it was something like Fake winning bid = $300, my bid = $299, next highest bid after me = $100.  The seller gave me a second chance offer, but offered it only at my top bid price.  That seemed ridiculous since the amount was artificially inflated by something like $200 through a fake bid, so I offered a compromise, but the seller wouldn't go for it, and I refused to pay the artificially inflated price.  Never saw it again after that...

For me personally, I really like the Japanese tab/songbook for "When Dream and Day Unite."  I picked one up for about $50, and it doesn't come up for purchase that often.  I do not collect the foreign variations of the CD's, unless they have additional content not otherwise available on the U.S releases (e.g., the Japanese "Hollow Years" single).

In addition to the Dutch Box set already covered, a few that come to mind are...

Original 1996 Fan Club CD
Take the Time Single (with Purple Ribbon)
Ytse Jam / Status Seeker Cassette single (Majesty)
LSFNY Korean Box Set (the one with the bandana seems to be super duper rare)
Original German Awake Vinyl (although less so now that it's been re-released)
"Tears" promo single mini CD

I've seen the Tears single quite a few times on eBay. It never goes for less than $100.

I've always wanted that LSFNY box set, though.

I just came across this on eBay.  I actually just bought the Through Her Eyes single.  I had it at one point but had to sell it a while ago when I needed some extra money and I always wanted it back. Now I have it again.

But like I was saying, I came across this on eBay.

^^  Kevin Moore's last US show ^^.  good Cd, listening to it now.  I think there is a video on YouTube of James knocking Another Day out of the park, which was taken from this show (and discussed some time ago on DTF).  Also, this disc includes Status Seeker "hidden" in track 4 following To Live Forever and an MP drum solo.

Yes, hence the title.  Very good show though.  I'd put it on myself now but I'm at work and don't have my laptop here. Besides, I'm listening to Marillion.     I'll check for the AD video on YouTube after this.

I got off ebay the Status Seeker and Afterlife Radio Remix singles, along with an Mechanic Records CD version of WDaDU for about $20 if I recall correctly. Freakin' steal, as the post was for "When Dream and Day Unite" and only briefly mentioned the singles in the description. Probably the best part of my collection.

I don't have the Tears single either. Wanted one for a while but there's no way I'm paying more than $100 for it.

Those are pretty rare. Don't have the Dutch box, the Korean box or the cassette single.

My favorite for a long time has been the Purple ribbon with gold wax seal Take The Time promo. I'd love to know the story behind that one.

I guess the original Majesty demo cassette is probably pretty rare by now too.

Didn't realize the original Mechanic CDs are pretty rare, but I guess they are.

I have the longbox, but I took the CD out of it to listen to it when I bought it so I guess it's an empty longbox.

I kept my long boxes of Rush, Marillion, and Dream Theater when I got them, but they are all empty and flattened.

Take the Time Single (with Purple Ribbon)

LSFNY Korean Box Set (the one with the bandana seems to be super duper rare)
I didn't even know that these exist. The Korean box set with the Simpsons T-shirt yes, but there's a version with a bandana??
Though, now that I think about it, I believe I saw the Take The Time once on eBay a few months ago. It went for around $200 if I remember correctly.

Original German Awake Vinyl (although less so now that it's been re-released)
Not really rare, but expensive indeed. Hardly any copy goes for less than $100 on eBay.

"Tears" promo single mini CD
Every few weeks, two copies show up within hours of each other on eBay for ridiculous prices ($300 or so).  Those two sellers really annoy me.
By the way, I still don't really understand why this is so rare. There are 1000 copies out there, yet I always saw this getting sold at much higher prices than the original demo. I'd have assumed that fewer copies of the demo exist nowadays since it's much older, and that the demo is therefore rarer and more expensive...

Japanese items as a rule are more expensive, but beyond that I have no idea. I've been waiting 20 years to get an affordable copy so I'll keep waiting.

Well, there were 1,000 made... that doesn't mean there are 1,000 out there.  Remember that this was initially just a give-away item, and that it was given away 20 years ago.  I would imagine that a lot of them went to more casual fans and may have gotten tossed out over the course of the last 20 years.  And a lot of the surviving ones are probably now in the hands of collectors.

I think so too.  Sold him a few things myself. One of them was an impossibly rare sealed Another Day cassette single and another was a Gigantour promo CD. May have been a few others can't remember.

At the moment, I'm considering selling my watermarked CD advanced promo of Live at Budokan

I have a pretty significant collection of cool DT stuff I think....Some of my faves are my MP signed purple hotstick , MM signed Zildjian stick, MP long white wristband , Many tour backstage laminate's , quite a few signed by MP , MP signed SFAM movie poster , a stainless steel Majesty logo that hangs from my car mirror...Showed it to MP once and he loved it, asked where I got it , and said "Great place to put it, on "The Mirror" !

Where was your copy manufactured exactly? There should be a "Printed in X" line on the rear inlay and a "Made in X" on the disc.
I'm asking because I have some suspicions that my copy might be a mixture of two releases which was never officially distributed like this.
Title: Re: DT collection
Post by: Prog Snob on May 08, 2017, 02:03:44 PM
According to the Discogs site it's from Germany. According to the back insert, it says Printed in Germany. The disc says Made in Germany.

There's also another misprint edition which, according to Discogs, is made in France.
Title: Re: DT collection
Post by: ProgressiveIce on May 08, 2017, 02:42:49 PM
Yes, that's the one I have (and submitted to Discogs): printed in Germany but disc pressed in France. I realised I never clarified that in the description though, only in the comments on the history page. I should probably fix that.
I've been watching eBay listings of the misprint for a while now, and every copy I've seen was printed and pressed in Germany. Hence my suspicion that my copy might be a mixture of the German misprint and a French disc.

By the way, I've heard that there's also a Korean pressing which has the same wrong colours. I have yet to see a copy of that anywhere though.

Looking through that site, I've noticed there are a lot of odd versions of things. It's intriguing.

As far as other misprints, the site doesn't list them. I'm sure just Mike Portnoy has that Korean version. :lol  What I was hoping to find there was the version that has Majesty printed on the front. That's really rare though. I'm also waiting for the price of the Tears single to drop, along with the Fan Club CDs. Then there are the limited pressings of their recent vinyl releases.

@Prog Snob: Interestingly enough, I didn't get any notification about that.  What's your username? (Or send me a PM here or on Discogs if you don't want it public.)
You mean this one (https://www.discogs.com/release/3767166)? Yeah, I'd love to get my hands on an original of that (I have a copy). There was one on eBay for several years; I think it sold for $800, but not entirely sure. I also remember some discussion about that tape here in the forums.

@bunceman: Nice collection.
Yeah, clear ADTOE is unfortunately impossible to find for a reasonable price.
But you're missing the real gems: the test pressings of the ETR releases. :-)
Writing this reminds me of the ADTOE test pressing which was sold on eBay a few years ago. I wish I could've bought it (well above my budget at the time).

By the way, there's another interesting release for sale on eBay right now, ending in two hours: the Korean cassette release of LSFNY with the original "burning apple" artwork (https://www.ebay.com/itm/382068583031).
Title: Re: DT collection

@ProggresiveIce
I've never been too into test pressings although it would be nice to have a complete collection they just sell for so much money I don't think I could bring myself to spend that much on a test press.  I paid more for the brookvale swirl I&W than I have on any record ever.  These days the prices are unbelievable.  There's a cover only of I&W test pressing on eBay for $300.  $300 for just a cover!

I've come to terms I just have to forget about ADTOE and hope for some color repress of Octavarium onward.
Title: Re: DT collection
Post by: ProgressiveIce on May 10, 2017, 03:30:43 AM
Yeah, the TPs are incredibly expensive nowadays. I was lucky enough to get them directly from ETR back then. That said, the most recent TP sales on eBay (Awake and FII) were less than $100. I've seen that cover sale as well, but I honestly doubt anyone will buy it for that price.
Don't have too high hopes of anything happening regarding Octavarium. Note that there was no MOV release of that album at all; the black record from a few years ago was directly by Atlantic.
I'd love to see vinyl releases of ACOS and LSFNY. I don't see those happen anytime soon either though.

That (and in Japan) were the only places you could get it until 1995 or 1996 when One Way reissued it. There have been a few reissues since then.

Interesting. Note though that this is still (most likely) a misprint; the normal French pressing has the correct colours.

Either someone got a steal or this book just doesn't command the price it used to when it was published.

I think I paid $75 for mine, but I pre-ordered. It sold out fairly quickly and was highly sought after for years but perhaps that's not the case anymore.

There were several updated editions after that, but none that were that special.

This is the only memorabilia thread I could find.

Anyway, I don't have a TON of cool stuff.  But I do have this ONE really cool thing, that I finally got framed.

I was fortunate enough to attend the final show of the Astonishing tour, in Durham NC.  I was also fortunate enough to be pals with a certain site admin, who hooked me and my kids up with some VIP and backstage access.

I called the venue a month or two before the show to ask if they would have any site-specific posters, as opposed to the general tour posters that are often sold at merch counters at concerts.  They said that yes, they would have a few, so they put my name down.  So what happened is that they had hatch posters made for the event - only a handful were made, and I got one for no charge.  So I picked it up at the will call window, and headed straight into the venue for the VIP event, where I had everyone in the band sign it.  All of them wondered what the hell it was, since they had never seen anything like it before.

I got to spend more time with them backstage after the show, and confirmed with almost all of them that no one else had presented them with such a thing to sign that night.  So, unless someone had another one and hung out at the bus and got them all to sign, this appears to be a one of a kind piece of memorabilia.

And since I finally got it framed, I just wanted to let everyone see it.

Does anyone wants these (for free):

It's a black and white DoT vinyl (from the NYC listening party) and TA tour program. I also have a Room137 drum head I want to give away. I'm in the process of moving and there are a few things I don't want to throw out, but don't want to keep either.

I can ship it anywhere in the US or Canada. Send me a PM if interested.

If you still have those, I want them!

Anyone parting with DT stuff (CD/DVD/Collectibles) hit me up, I am working on re-building my DT/music collection.

I moved to an apartment and managed to sort/store/sell a bunch of stuff.

I believe I had mentioned I had a promo hourglass from the Falling Into Infinity era. Here are some pictures.

I remember that. They stopped doing a lot of the cool promotional stuff after that album for some reason.

Today I found the contents of an envelope given to me and the 49 other "fan chanters" by Mike Portnoy that were part of the Systematic Chaos gang vocal bit that he initiated on his old forum. This was the tail end of my decade of living in NYC which allowed me to see a ton of cool DT and sideprojects related stuff in person. But this was such a highlight. Getting to be part (albeit a really really tiny one) still feels surreal 16 years later.

We weren't allowed to peek inside the envelope until we got in so it was pretty exciting. Again, not much of a collection thing perhaps but I thought it was worth a share :)

That's awesome!  I know a few other people/members here that were there, so I've seen these before.  So cool to be a part of that!

Thank you! Yeah, living in NYC 97-07 was a cool time to be a DT fan and of all the things I was privileged to experience from them
this was probably the most unique. I don't listen to the album
much but when any of those choir moments appear I can't help but smile to myself:)
