Hey lovers,
Figured I'd get my thread started since DTVT started his. I'm planning on running mine more casually -- I'm not concerned so much with the actual competition as I am with talking about the songs you guys send me. I'll do some themed rounds and some open rounds as well. Scoring will work similar to the previous roulettes.
Here are the confirmed participants:
ariich
Sigz
sonatafanica
SoundscapeMN
Gorille
Skydivingninja
KevShmev
sneakyblueberry
letters
Here's my Last.fm - www.lastfm.com/user/lumi3erjack
So, what do I like? I tend to think I'm very open-minded -- I try not to rule anything out. What I'm not really a fan of is "prog." Let's not get into this debate here, but I prefer actual progressive music as opposed to the genre. I'm not the biggest metalhead around, either, but I do appreciate heavy music. Growls are a bit hit-or-miss for me.
What I really love more than anything are great vocal harmonies and concise and emotional songwriting.
That being said -- Send me anything. This game is about expanding my knowledge, not reinforcing my pre-conceived notions of what I think makes good and bad music. I won't promise to love it all but I'll give it equal weight, so don't be afraid to take chances. It'll be more fun that way.
-
:yarr
-
Woo! I can't wait for the first round.
-
I'll be in if you really want but I do agree with your reasoning.
-
Woo! I can't wait for the first round.
Neither can I. Course, I won't have any lovely chiptune to send him...
-
Hey! I listen to slightly more than chiptune sometimes maybe okay I need help it's all I do my thoughts are just bleeps and bloops at this point
-
I'd love to be in one of these and I'm too damned
lazy busy to be in any of the non-casual ones.
-
OK, Cool. Instead of delaying the rounds by waiting for everyone to submit, I'll just make a cut-off date so everyone's not waiting around.
-
Get the fuck out of here with this "organization" crap.
-
OK, Cool. Instead of delaying the rounds by waiting for everyone to submit, I'll just make a cut-off date so everyone's not waiting around.
Nice idea. :tup
-
Okay, I am in, but tell me again what this is. :lol
-
It's a round-based music game. I pick a category for each round and you guys PM me a link to a song. I rate them from favorite to least-favorite and talk about what I liked and didn't like about them, and then we talk about it / I start the next round with a new category. Person with the most points at the end "wins."
-
If you have a spot I'd love to do this again.
-
Me too goon
-
Me three. I know you said 2 but I figured I would at least stick my head in the thread.
-
I'd love to participate in a roulette, but i guess it's too late? :-\
-
I'd like to participate, if possible.
-
I'd like to join this too.... if possible. Cause I doubt I"ll be able to get into any others..... :(

Sounds good. Get it going! :coolio
-
Sounds good. Get it going! :coolio
Yeah hurry up Goon so I can send you the Circus Maximus discography! :neverusethis:
-
OK! So I lied, I'm going to put the people who want to join in a name randomizer and pick the first two. Also, do you want me to start ASAP or wait 'til Numbers' game is over?
and don't you dare SDN :lol
EDIT: sneakyblueberry and letters, Random.org says you're in.
-
and don't you dare SDN :lol
Vanden Plas then?
-
:caffeine:
Also, do you want me to start ASAP or wait 'til Numbers' game is over?
-
ASAP!
-
Alright...I'm impatient :lol
ROUND 1
Send me a cover song. A link to the original would be appreciated as well. I've always loved hearing different artists' interpretations of classic (or not-so-classic) songs, especially when they manage to add extra layers of depth, meaning, and/or emotion. GO!
I'll set a soft deadline of tomorrow at midnight. The earlier you send it, the more I can listen to it.
EDIT: just updated the OP in regards to my tastes.
-
Are cover medleys okay for this, or would you prefer just one whole song?
-
That actually sounds pretty interesting. Do it.
-

:(
Oh well, hopefully DTVT lets me in his. Hopefully.
:|
-
That actually sounds pretty interesting. Do it.
I was thinking about it, then I thought of an absolutely amazing cover that I will send you...now.
-
PM sent! :tup
-
Sent. Hope you appreciate this one as much as I do. :lol
-
Just waiting on SoundscapeMN and SBB. Thanks for getting 'em in quick, guys :)
Edit: I've gotten some very cool stuff so far!
Edit 2: I think this is how scoring will work -
5 points - 1 person
4 points - 2 people
3 points - 3 people
2 points - 2 people
1 point - 1 person
Sound good?
Edit 3: If you could send me official YouTube channel links or Grooveshark links to your submissions I would appreciate it -- that way I can share the songs you sent me with everyone when I post the results. Don't worry about it if you can't find it on there, though. Not a huge deal. Everything I've gotten so for works.
-
THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME
:tup
(cookie monster reference? anyone?)
-
Yeah, it's a legit/legal link (official youtube ones, youtube live vids, Grooveshark, etc) it'd be cool to have them all posted. If people can't find them then they can feel free to PM you whatever they can find, but I'd ask you not to post the links here. :)
-
Wish I could have joined in, I think I would be able to offer some good suggestions (based on your last.fm).
I will be following this anyway. 73020234 doesn't listen to anything remotely to what I like, so I stopped following that. I think this one has some potential to help me as well.
-
If you had chosen me I would have had the perfect cover song :lol
-
Sorry dude, just sent mine.
-
Everything's in! There's a *chance* I could have this done tonight.
-
Everything's in! There's a *chance* I could have this done tonight.
Wow you're fast! This could be over a lot faster than number's was :lol
Even though I'm not in, definitely looking forward to the results!
-
To numbers' credit, high schoolers tend to have a lot more busy work to do at home than college seniors. Also, this week is going to be off-the-wall nuts for me so there's a chance I might not be able to get the next write up done until next week -- I wanna start off strong :p
-
Dayum, youse fast, boy.
-
antigoon, you make me proud.
-
Maybe its just me, but I think the reason numbers was getting flak was because he would say "I'll have results by the end of the night", and then it would be two days later. I didn't mind the time between his rounds, it takes time to listen to all the songs (probably more than once) and try to rank them, but the missing his own deadline kind of got annoying.
-
Perhaps. I'm home later than I thought, but I'm gonna continue on the write-up.
-
:tup I hope I'm in the middle of tha pack, at least!
-
First, I wanna thank you guys for the submissions. I found something to like in all of them. I hope you'll forgive me for the shorter descriptions for some of your songs; I'm concise to a fault sometimes :lol And besides, we can talk more in the thread.
5 Points - KevShmev: The Flaming Lips – Breathe https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Speak+To+Me+Breathe/2zF38M
Wow. This is what I was talking about when I mentioned bands adding something to the original piece. I’m really glad Kev sent this to me early in the day, because to be honest, I hated it on my first listen. It seemed to go nowhere; it was really noisy, and a bit disorienting. I listened to it again though; I wanted to give everything you guys sent me a fair shake. Once I got over the shock of my first listen, I could appreciate what was going on in this cover. The ostinato bass groove really holds the piece together, and the percussion work is great – the way the rhythm section works actually reminds me of something that would fit in a Santana song (Note: I don’t really listen to Santana, apologies if I’m way off :lol). I like the way the vocals are done, as well. It sounds like the harmonies are sung in the same intervals as the original, but since the underlying harmony of the actual song seems to be completely different, they have a whole new effect. I think what’s great about this cover is that it contains elements of psychedelia in a whole different way than the Floyd version did. This piece just puts me in a trance-like state.
4 Points - Sigz: Scala & Koalcny Brothers – Creep https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Creep/adTzz
I’m really glad you sent me this song. You’ll probably hate me for it, but I first heard it during a trailer for “The Social Network” and was really intrigued by it, but it slipped my mind soon after the trailer ended. Whereas Radiohead’s version of Creep has the soft verse, loud chorus thing going on, Scala’s cover is far more subdued, which is cool. Covering a Radiohead song is always a tricky proposition because one-upping Thom Yorke’s voice is just an uphill battle – 99% of the time, it’s just not gonna happen. The fact that the cover is done by a choir alleviates that pressure – it’s different enough to stand on its own merits. Like I said, I’m a huge sucker for vocal harmonies; this cover is right down my alley. I dunno if I could listen to a whole album of songs like this, but one is more than tolerable.
4 Points – skydivingninja: Jacob Moon – Come Talk To Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qphRwdr6MlY
This is just great. I’ve actually never heard the original, and I thought both versions were excellent. I really liked how Moon made the song his own with his fancy guitar work – it really suits the song well. The tone he gets is out of this world, and I love how he manages to change his playing up throughout the six minutes of the song. I’d definitely like to hear more of this guy’s music.
3 Points – SoundscapeMN – Local Natives – Warning Sign https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Warning+Sign/2gDGa5
I wanted to put this up with the four-pointers, but Kev’s and SDN’s submissions were just too good. I actually like the cover way better than the original (I’m not too familiar with it) – I think the instrumentation is great and the vocal harmonies kick ass. Not much else to say!
3 Points – ariich – Matt Cardle – Baby One More Time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4mfUyjfuA0
What? Baby One More Time is actually a solid pop song! Rich took a risk sending me an X Factor song, but I like it a lot. Cardle’s voice really works well for the tune, and I like the way he changes up the vocal melody in some parts just slightly. I think the best part of the cover is the bridge – he sings with a lot of power here and it’s just a nice emotional payoff that you wouldn’t expect from a song originally done by Britney Spears.
3 Points – sonatafanica: Björk – Like Someone in Love https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Like+Someone+in+Love/1pGIaL
I’ve never heard a Björk song before this, so I was kind of worried, especially since I like the original quite a bit. Björk’s version is just a completely different animal though – just a harp and her voice. She sounds so vulnerable and fragile in the song, culminating in the cracking/straining of her voice in the end. I really like the raw sound of it.
2 Points – letters: Opeth – Soldier of Fortune https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Soldier+of+Fortune/2DX2HT
Man, I love Mikael’s clean voice. It’s just nice. I would have rated this higher, but I felt it was one of the most literal covers out of the bunch and not much else. I will say, I think the song is PERFECT for Opeth. When I was listening to the original, I thought to myself, “I bet the Opeth version isn’t much different,” and look, I was right :P
2 Points – Gorille: Stream of Passion – Street Spirit https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/search/songs/?query=street%20spirit%20stream%20of%20passion
I saw you had submitted a Stream of Passion song and I gasped a bit :lol Fortunately, it turned out to be good! Unfortunately, it’s a cover of my favorite Radiohead song, and while I think the singer did a really good job with it, I don’t think it needed to be turned into a metal song – I honestly think the original is perfect. This version sounds a bit too sterile. Also, while the singer's voice was very powerful, it just lacked the emotion of Yorke's, which is the problem I talked about in my description for Sigz's song -- It's just really hard to beat him, even if you're a fantastic singer.
1 Point – sneakyblueberry: The White Stripes – Jolene https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Jolene/2TrolA
Hm. Jolene ain’t my favorite song in the world, and The White Stripes couldn’t do much to change it. I do love the rawness of their live sound, though, and I think Jack White does this tune better than Dolly. But like I said, not a huge fan of the song.

Round 2 - Free For All. Send me whatever you like.
Deadline - Wednesday, Midnight.
-
Damn! :P I'll try to do better next round...
-
I'm surprised there are people out there that actually like the Flaming Lips' massacre of Dark Side Of The Moon.
-
Haha shit I expected that. Bad choice made under pressure :|
-
Damn I'm annoyed I missed this, I agree with Antigoon on some stuff other forumites don't seem to. Still, I'll definitely follow this.
-
Anything we want? Great googly-moogly I'll need to think about this.
EDIT: Wait, no I don't. I'll just recommend a band I recommend anyone with good taste to listen to around this time of year. Sent. Good to see I'm already near the front!
-
I didn't listen to them all, but that Peter Gabriel cover was fantastic. It probably would have won if I was scoring.

They massacred a few of the songs - yes, I am looking at you, "Money" :lol - but they did a great job with their cover of "Breathe in the Air."
But hey, at least put a different spin on things than just playing it the same, which is what most bands do when they do covers.
-
I guess. I really hated the entire thing when I listened to it. I mean there is a re-imagining of an album and then there's...whatever the hell they did with it.
-
But the important thing is antigoon liked it, and his opinion is the only one that matters here.
-
I mean, I guess, in that I'm running the game. But I like to hear what other people have to say.
-
Hey, antigoon, I know I'm not in this game and all, but can I still send you stuff anyway, just for the hell of it?

Same. Deadline to submit songs is midnight though, so I'm sure Goon hasn't started yet. BUT HE SHOULD HURRY UP AND GET ON WITH IT BECAUSE MY SONG WILL WIN!

I don't expect to score high with my song but you never know. It's just a song I had to send at some point.

Think I'll probably lose again, but its better to risk it all on a risky choice than to rest on the risklessness of a riskless choice.
Yep.
-
Hey guys! I've started listening to your songs. Unfortunately, I've got a couple days of pure insanity coming up so the jury's out on whether I get this thing done by Friday night or not.

It's cool man, take your time.

can I haz results plz?

Bumpity bump.
So, while Joe is taking his time, I figured I'd ask now whether anyone has a problem with me doing the next one of these (once Joe finishes, we don't need more than 2 going on at the same time). I've listened to a lot of different music but I love discovering new stuff. Thought maybe I'd have 8 people, 4 by invite and the other 4 by random draw out of whoever signs up.
-
I know I've asked to do mine next in numbers' thread but I see no problem of you and I doing both at the same time, after DTVT's and goon's roulette are done (I don't think anyone else asked to do their's before you). :tup
-
Maybe we should start an official roulette line thread?
-
I think we need more judges and people to do write ups on the ones we already have running.
-
Bumpity bump.

@DTVT: I was thinking the same thing. When I get home from work I'm going to set up a sticky thread that collates the key info of the ones we've had so far and people who would like to go next, and we'll use that to keep track.
@SS: That's cool, I'll add you to the draw. :tup

Hey, ive started the writeups. Expect this tonight. sorry for the delay. Gotta go to class!

Okay, Round 2 results. I'm sorry this took a week. Your submissions were really great on the whole. Thanks a lot again. Apologies in advance for not proofreading this.
5 Points – sonatafanica – Gregory and the Hawk – Oats We Sow
I think I’ve heard this song before. The vocal melodies sound really familiar. Anyway, this is a really nice song. Songs like this are like little stocking stuffers to me – short, sweet, and immediately satisfying. The thing I like about folk songs is that they really need to rely on the strength of the pure songwriting since there aren’t many other gimmicks they can rely on. That being said, I really like the instrumentation in this piece. It varies a bit, which helps the song be dynamic – something that a lot of simple songs just aren’t. I want more of this.
4 Points – Kev – Eric Johnson – Manhattan
I dunno if it’s the fact that I’ve been listening to a lot of Satriani lately, but this song just makes me feel good. Eric Johnson has always been one of those guys that I’ve meant to check out for years but never got the chance to explore properly. I’ve heard his “hits,” like “Cliffs of Dover” of course, but I never really got to dig any deeper, so I’m glad you sent me this. I’ve listened to this song about five times and I really can’t get over the lead tone Johnson has. I’ve heard it discussed time and time again but it really is amazing… like a knife through butter. It’s just so damn smooth. Of course, none of this would matter if the instrumental wasn’t interesting. Thankfully, it’s tastefully composed and has some really nice stuff going on, even with the show-offey elements.
4 Points – SoundscapeMN – Jellyfish – The King is Half Undressed
What a fun song. There’s a comment on the YouTube video that says, “This band should have owned the 90s.” I’m not one to make such sweeping judgments after hearing only one song, but damn, this is good. I know this is only supposed to be about the music, but I really liked the whimsical video that accompanied it :lol You weren’t kidding about the vocal harmonies either. There’s a break about 2:30 into the song in which their voices go into Queen territory without sounding too derivative, and I think they pull it off really well. Can’t get the damn chorus out of my head, either. :tup
3 Points – sneakyblueberry – Brooke Fraser – Crows and Locusts
This chick’s voice is wonderful. I’ve been really into female singers lately, and I can really see myself enjoying Fraser. I like the chorus in this one a lot, but I thought the song could have been a bit shorter overall. I would have loved to put this in the four-point category but I thought the other submissions were just slightly stronger. Like barely. Want more.
3 Points – SDN – Mew – The Zookeeper’s Boy
I had high expectations for this song, which I suppose is my own fault. I see you and sonata talk about Mew on the forums, so I figured I’d love ‘em. I actually thought this was a pretty rad song, and I REALLY liked the vocals, but it didn’t grab me like the 5 and four point songs did. Perhaps that’s just a testament to the quality of those rather than that of The Zookeeper’s Boy. In any event, I’ll definitely need to check out more of this band. Album suggestion?
3 Points – Letters – APC – 3 Libras
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I don’t know why, but I’ve always been averse to Maynard James Keenan and it’s nice to know that he makes music I can see myself liking :lol I’m not the biggest fan of his voice, but I think it’s an OK song. It’s kinda neither here nor there for me. I don’t see much in it to keep me coming back for more.
2 Points – Rich – The River Empires – Overture in Thales Summer
So maybe you should’ve sent me a different song from this album :lol I like what’s going on here a lot, and I feel like I should enjoy this, but unfortunately, it dragged on too long for me. There just didn’t seem to be enough variation to warrant the length of the track. Alternatively, I listened to “The Harbourland” and I liked that track a lot better, so I guess I’ll just have to listen to this album!
2 Points – Gorille – Unexpect – A Clown’s Mindtrap
I know Unexpect is your favorite band, and this is your favorite song, so I’ll go easy here. There’s just so much going on in this song, and it seems to change faster than I can appreciate any individual part. It’s like I’m in one of those dark theme park rides on rails and I’m just being jerked around every few seconds! I can see the appeal here, but I really find it hard to make an emotional connection with this and other bands that jump from idea to idea to idea a lot. I did think the violin was cool!
1 Point – Sigz – Gregor Samsa – Lessening
I dunno, man. I don’t think post rock is for me. I’ve tried a few EITS records, but those never really grabbed me like I thought they would. I know you speak highly of this band so I was excited to check out the song… Calling someone’s favorite music good for “background listening” is kind of a dick thing to do, but I found it really hard to keep my attention for the near-seven minutes of this piece. I feel like I need to listen to music like this with a different mindset or something, because I kinda just get bored. And I know that’s a totally immature statement :lol Still willing to give it another chance, but it doesn’t look too good.
Round 3: I really love songs that can do a lot with a little time. Give me something that's three minutes or shorter.
Deadline: midnight, Thursday.

I should have some fun in this next round.
I was really hoping you wouldn't pick Gregory and the Hawk. Given Goon's love of Eisely and stuff like that I thought I could steal them from you and get an instant win in a round like this. I'll have to think.
Antigoon: I think the best starting point is Frengers. Its the easiest to get into, very wintery sounding music, good atmosphere and mostly concise songwriting save the last track. No More Stories is another great one, sort of the same sound as Frengers, but doesn't feature as many hooks as Frengers does. The Zookeepers Boyd is on the album And the Glass Handed Kites, which is more progressive, guitar-driven, and uses weird rhythms a lot more, but I found it to be the hardest to get into, despite some immediately accessible, great songs like Zookeeper's Boy, Apocolypso, Chinaberry Tree, and Special.
Long story short, even if those first three tracks blew you away, get into Mew. I just picked a more accessible song with cool harmonies at the end.
Good to be in third place. No shame in being behind Kev and Sonata.
EDIT: Sent. Hope you like jazz, which according to your last.fm you have some kind of affinity for.
-
You'll never be as indie as I, Matt. Therefore you can never beat me!
-
I still find No More Stories to be Mew's most complete record. Frengers and Kites both have some of their best tunes, but start to finish, No More Stories works best for me.
by the way, I'm not aware of how to view a whole library on 1 or 2 pages on last.fm, so I ended up copying+pasting antigoon's entire library in a list of Artists just to save time (rather than page through 27 pages each time I'm wondering if an artist is in his library or not). Here's that list

There's a band called "iHATEZOOK"? :lol
Except that I don't hate Zook.
-
Glad you liked that Eric Johnson tune. :)
Hmmmm, a love song that is three minutes or shorter....this will take some thinking.
-
I'm not sure if you're joking or if you read that wrong Kev, but just incase its the latter he didn't say "love song", just a short song.
-
Round 3: I really love songs that can do a lot with a little time. Give me something that's three minutes or shorter.
Whoops. It is like I saw the word "love" there twice. :lol
-
Wait, what? Doesn't have to be a love song!
-
Dammit at the song I went for. :lol It's one of my favourites on the album, and I've never found it to drag, but I've only even listened in the context of the album and never as an individual song, so I should have considered that really. But you should definitely give the whole album a few listens, plenty of the songs have more going on in them. :tup

I agree, although as a 1st song to introduce someone to The River Empires, there's a few others that seem more accessible. Three Tigers or Toast of the Snake King namely.
-
Possibly, although those two are a bit more straightforward. I think something like The Harbourland has a bit more variety, or maybe The Coventry.
The whole album just has so much awesome vocal harmony though. :heart
-
Eric Johnson ftw :tup
-
Oh damn, totally forgot to send one last night, just got too much going on at the moment.
I'll try and get one to you today.
-
Don't worry 'bout it!
-
Eric Johnson ftw :tup
Seconded.
On his last fm... led zeppelin had 7 plays... just as many as Studioforce. Shameful.
-
Eh, Led Zeppelin is o.k.
-
Eh, Led Zeppelin is pretty great, even if they are kinda overrated.
My thoughts.
-
Meh. To the max.
-
Zeppelin are favorites of mine. I'll always love them, even if more than half their catalog were songs/ideas ripped off from Blues artists and other, more obscure artists/bands.
-
Led Zep to me: obviously a very important/influential/great band, but not my cup of tea. And noone even loves their own cups of tea as much as most people love Zep.

Bernard Purdie comes to mind.

Oh yeah, sent my PM earlier today. Was I the last one to send in?
-
I have a feeling you were. WAY TO GO ARIICH.
-

Yep :P
So Frengers is a great record. I've been trying to get my hands on some other Mew. As for The River Empires, I like what I've heard, but the album is so long I haven't been able to listen to it through. Still really unfamiliar with the music. A Toast to the Snake King is awesome, though!
-
give The River Empires 2 or 3 listenings all the way through. Yeah it seems long, but consider the facts
1) It's technically a 2-Volume record. In that it could and really should be seen as a double album or like a 2-album release. When you break it down, the 1st Volume (or album) is about 50 minutes long. The 2nd Volume (or album) is about 30 minutes. So taking that as it is, it doesn't seem so immensely long.
1) it's titled "Epilogue" and thus every part or piece is referencing in-effect, a different part of the 5 volume (or chapter) story that is to follow. It would be like taking a small part of each Harry Potter book and telling the story in 300 pages (or I suppose just to take a couple of songs off each "Act" of TDH's story or each part of the Coheed story). It's really like a sampling or overview of what is to come. But inevitably, with 5 more in-depth records to follow, it had to end up being as long as it did.
The fact was, Jessy had even more music that could have ended up just on Epilogue, but that music didn't fit with TRE's so he ended up using it for another project (The Gloomcatcher).
As for Mew, Frengers is great, you should check out And the Glass Handed Kites and No More Stories eventually as well.
-
Bring the thunder, goon.
-
I'm feeling less guilty about missing the deadline now. :P

I'm feeling less guilty about missing the deadline now. :P
Its probably your fault then :P

This song is simply amazing, go and pick up the album, the whole thing is wonderful.

I second picking up the whole album.

Yeah, Venus Isle is absolutely stellar. I remember buying it back when it came out and being pleasantly surprised at how really good the whole thing is. :tup :tup

Update! Again, sorry for the delay. This week it was applying to law schools and registering for classes that got in my way.
Submissions were so good I had to break my own rule.
5 Points – SBB – Florence and the Machine – Bird Song
Where did this band come from and why have I never heard of it until now? I love how soulful and bluesy Florence’s (I assume that’s the vocalist’s name) vocals are in this song. The contrasting loud and soft sections work really well in this song, and I especially like the vocal harmonies in the soft parts. Sounds really ethereal at times. I’m definitely gonna need an album recommendation.
4 Points – letters – Katatonia – Omerta
I told you I liked this song! The “Why have you waited so long?” refrain has been stuck in my head all weekend. The vocalist’s voice is perfect for this track. It’s a pretty simple song, and while I don’t think the guitar solo/interlude is the greatest ever it provides some nice variation. Not much else to say really, the song is very solid. They don’t usually play music like this though, right?
4 Points – Sonatafanica – Pomplamoose – If You Think You Need Some Lovin’
This song made me dance. Literally, I got up from my chair and started dancing. I love the groove going on throughout the track so much. The call and response vocals are really well done; I like this chick’s voice a ton. Quirky tunes like this are among my favorite songs, so it really hit the spot for me this week! It’s not even 2.5 minutes long but it feels fully realized. Album?
4 Points – Rich – Nellie McKay – There You Are In Me
So I broke my own rule. Sue me. The four pointers were just too strong to move any of them down! I didn’t really like this one at first but I’m glad I gave it a few more chances. I think the chorus in the tune is cool, but the verses were what really kept me interested. It’s one of those rare occasions in which jamming a lot of words into a verse works well. Makes it a bit frenzied sounding, which I think is cool.
3 Points – SDN – Weather Report – Teen Town
So I was thinking about asking you for another song since I have Heavy Weather, but honestly I wasn’t too familiar with this song so I decided to use it. It’s good! I like how they held back for the most part. There really isn’t much wild playing or soloing at all in this piece. Kinda all about the groove -- I can dig that.
3 Points – Sigz – Emily Loizeau – Comment Dire
So it took me a while to get over the French, which I didn’t think was going to be a problem for me. But anyway, I think this is a cute song, but not really as strong as the four tunes with higher points. I like how haunting it is, and the piano work is really nice. I’m interested in checking out some more of her stuff if you want to recommend something, though.
2 Points – Gorille – Mr. Bungle – After School Special
So I’m just going to pretend the last minute of this song without music doesn’t exist. I liked the actual song a lot, but I dunno what the deal is with the end. Definitely a strange song, but I think it works for the most part. Really like the refrain. You were SO close to being in the 3s this round!
2 Points – Kev – Trevor Rabin – The Cape
This was probably the most interesting song I received this week, and I feel bad for rating it so low, because I certainly enjoyed it. I guess that’s the problem with the way I’m doing the rankings, but that’s OK. Can you tell me more about this guy? I thought the song got pretty damn good in the second part when more instruments were added.
1 Point – SoundscapeMN – Kevin Gilbert – Suit Canon
Holy polyphony, Batman! This song has a few things going against it – Not really a fan of the polyphony, and I’m definitely not a fan of much a cappella anything, although it is impressive to hear. Also, the little circus bit at the end confused me. I gotta say, the song wasn't my cup o' tea.

Round Four: I think this year was a pretty damn good one for music releases. Send me something from 2010.
-
Ruh roh. Brb, buying more stuff from this year.
-
:lol
-
Would live releases from this year count or is that a no?
-
Yeah, sure.
-
5 Points – SBB – Florence and the Machine – Bird Song
Where did this band come from and why have I never heard of it until now? I love how soulful and bluesy Florence’s (I assume that’s the vocalist’s name) vocals are in this song. The contrasting loud and soft sections work really well in this song, and I especially like the vocal harmonies in the soft parts. Sounds really ethereal at times. I’m definitely gonna need an album recommendation.
Yay I'm glad you liked this! This song (+ its awesome intro, which isn't a part of this song) is off Florence + The Machine's debut album Lungs. The funny thing is that this song (+ 3 other songs that should of actually made the album) can only be found on the deluxe edition of the album.
-
Huh, weird! Well, I'm getting it now. And I'm about to buy Brooke Fraser's Flags after listening to about 3/4 of it on Grooveshark. Girl can write songs!
-
Fuck. There was a shitload of good music this year, but I have a hard time imagining you liking most of the stuff I have. I might just send something totally from left field.
-
Might as well. From my perspective, I just want to hear some cool new music, especially stuff I might not check out otherwise. The ratings are secondary to me, though I definitely understand wanting to win.
-
Huh, weird! Well, I'm getting it now. And I'm about to buy Brooke Fraser's Flags after listening to about 3/4 of it on Grooveshark. Girl can write songs!
Nice. Yeah for sure she can. Its a grower, is Flags. If you like that, you might like her previous album Albertine, its a lot different from Flags in terms of style, but I think its ultimately better. It also has the nicest drum sound ever committed to tape.
-
All right Goon, I'm gonna send you some Fossil Roo or Ataecina :neverusethis:
-
I LOVE the last minute of music in "After School Special"! It's so disturbing! :lol
Anyway, PM sent! :tup
-
Sent. Bit of a risk, I believe, but its off one of the few albums I bought this year (not too big of a music year for me, sadly), and its the only song from that album I listen to with any kind of regularity. Its a pretty epic song though, hope you find some enjoyment.
-
I thought you were gonna send Fossil Taecina :neverusethis:

Sweet, I'll check it out after I give Flags the proper treatment.
That sounded dirty :lol

4 Points – letters – Katatonia – Omerta
I told you I liked this song! The “Why have you waited so long?” refrain has been stuck in my head all weekend. The vocalist’s voice is perfect for this track. It’s a pretty simple song, and while I don’t think the guitar solo/interlude is the greatest ever it provides some nice variation. Not much else to say really, the song is very solid. They don’t usually play music like this though, right?
No, they don't usually play stuff like that. They're still very good though, and I'd definitely recommend checking them out.
-
Anti, Trevor Rabin is the guitarist from the 80's incarnation of YES. He's gone on to work doing movie soundtracks.
The CD Kev took it from was released in 1989. Here's the wiki page.

How could I not!! What a great CD. I'd wish he'd do another. It's been too long.
-
Cool, glad you appreciated my song, it's definitely one of my favourites ever under 3 mins! The verses are quirky and the chorus is epic.
Also, I think you've done the points wrong. I haven't checked anyone else's, but I should be on 9, not 8. :P
-
1 Point – SoundscapeMN – Kevin Gilbert – Suit Canon
Holy polyphony, Batman! This song has a few things going against it – Not really a fan of the polyphony, and I’m definitely not a fan of much a cappella anything, although it is impressive to hear. Also, the little circus bit at the end confused me. I gotta say, the song wasn't my cup o' tea.
that's a little unexpected given you've expressed your interest and appreciation for Vocal Harmonies. It's actually a song that was used for a Gentle Giant Tribute record. Are you not a fan of Gentle Giant?
And even though it's not doing much for you (at this point), might I ask, how much Kevin Gilbert music have you heard before? because I would definitely not write him off solely based on your initial impression of this song.
I suspect if you listened to this (slightly different) version of this song within hearing the entire The Shaming of the True album, your opinion of it and I imagine Kevin's music could easily change.
-
I haven't really listened to Gentle Giant, no. And I dunno, it was a fugue (was it actually a fugue in form or just name?), and those kind of things just sound like exercises to me. Like I find it hard to respond emotionally to it, which is usually important for me.
And don't worry, I haven't written anyone off. I wouldn't dare from one song. What kind of music did he play usually?
-

yeah it is a "Fugue" or rather the version on Shaming is titled "Suit Fugue (Dance of the A&R Men)" anyway. An "excercise"? well I suppose in a way you could describe it as that. It's kind of a demonstration of layers of different vocal lines, and in this case, it's to demonstrate a smothering of voices desiring to all get your or the main character's in the story in the album, time attention and influence. It's really like an exposure of how the music industry is a short-attention-spanned, style over substance, 15 minutes of fame, experience. And how A&R Men wield a lot of that (negative) influence on an impressionable musician.
But as far as Kevin's music it self, that song, while many regard it as 1 of his most creative pieces, is hardly indicative of even the rest of the Shaming record, let alone his other work. Toy Matinee for example, is really cleverly written (although could be called 80's-tinged) pop. Thud is a very lyric-driven, singer/songwriter record. And Shaming is kind of all over the map, but it's a big concept album that you could say is Kevin's Quadrophenia or The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, in a way.
I know you know Spock's Beard and Transatlantic..and Genesis, Yes, etc. and his music appeals to people into those groups especially (among many others).

Thanks for the info on Gilbert, I'll check out Toy Matinee, seems like I would like it.

Okay. Round FOUR results! Sorry again for the delay, I suck wangs, take it in the butt, eyes, ears, nose, etc. I know.
I don't know if it was the songs themselves or the fact that this week has completely wiped me out, but I didn't really have much to say about some of 'em.
5 Points: Kev – Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Damn, you’re good at this. In your PM to me you said the song was “awesome enough to listen to over and over and over” and man, you’re right. I must’ve listened to it five times today. There is so much cool stuff going on in the background of this song that I love. The groove of the drums/bass with all the synth work layered on top creates such a nice sound…It feels like I’m floating on a cloud of beautiful noise when I listen to this. I’m really not sure what it is, but Sprawl II is one of those songs that trigger the “feel-good-nostalgia button” in my brain. Surprisingly, the key change works really well, too. This might be my favorite song of the whole roulette thus far. It’s definitely gotten me to play The Suburbs, which I’ve had since it was released but never got around to.
4 Points: SoundscapeMN – Emanuel & The Fear – Jimmie’s Song
I’ve gotten a lot of great choruses this round – Jimmie’s Song has one of the best of the bunch, I think. The strings and horns are great here too. I’d like an album recommendation.
4 Points: Rich – The Cat Empire – Feeling’s Gone
I think the best part about this song is the instrumentation. The organ and the horns are especially great. And the turntable scratching :lol And you’re right, the chorus is super catchy.
3 Points: Sneakyblueberry – Kings of Leon – Pyro
I’m glad you sent me a Kings of Leon song. They’re a band I’ve been meaning to check out for over a year but never really got around to. Although it became a bit overplayed, I really enjoyed last year’s hit, “Use Somebody.” So. Pyro. I like it! You’re right, the chorus is catchy as all hell – I love the vocal harmonies. Overall, it’s a pretty understated song. There’s not too much going on, which gives everything space to breathe. It’s nice.
3 Points: Sigz – Julie Christmas – July 1st
Wow. Listening to this was intense. I liked it fairly much; I think Julie Christmas (is that her real name? If so, she wins) has a really interesting voice. Very expressive. I would be interested in checking out more of her. I couldn’t find much information when I looked her up, what’s her deal?
3 Points: Fanörk – Yakuza Heart Attack – Bionic Boiz
This is one of my favorite chip songs so far. It’s really playful and fun. Last 30 seconds or so are awesome.
2 Points: Gorille – Pendulum – Watercolour
So I would have never expected to get a song like this from you given your other submissions! A dance track! So I thought it was a good bit of fun, but unfortunately that’s kinda all it was for me. The other subs were too good for me to put this any higher, even though I had that simple keyboard riff in my head all day today :lol
2 Points: Letters – Haken – Streams
There was so much potential here! I LOVED the first five minutes of this tune. Like really loved. It’s has beautiful melodies, it’s really uplifting and the singer has a great voice. Unfortunately, the rest of the song never, in my mind, lives up to the first part. I don’t hate growling, but it just doesn’t work for me here. I wish I could give it a better score, but I can’t ignore the minutes of the song I didn’t really enjoy. However, I want to explore this band more. Let me know what album you think I would like.
1 Point: SDN – Iron Maiden – The Talisman
Yikes mate. Didn’t dig this one. I don’t dislike Maiden, and I think their popular songs are really good but I’ve never really been able to get into their “deep cuts.” I’ll probably get a lot of flak for this but it sounds a bit samey to me. But anyway, in this track, Dickinson’s voice really bothered me for some reason, it sounded like he was straining a bit. It probably wouldn’t be ranked this low if it wasn’t so long, but as it stands I had to sit through ten minutes of music I didn’t really like as opposed to 3-5 like usual.

Round 5. Send me a song with an awesome solo in it. I don't care what instrument it is. My ranking will be based on the song as a whole, so don't send me a cool solo surrounded by shit.

I have a feeling I won't win this roulette! :lol
PM sent!

I didn't send Sprawl II because I saw you already listened to a good bit of Arcade Fire...
FUCK WHY DIDN'T I SEND THAT AMAZING SONG RAGERAGERAGE
Its my favorite Arcade Fire song too...
-
It's so fucking good. I'm still listening to it, and I wrote Kev's bit on Tuesday :lol
-
Awesome, glad you liked The Cat Empire! Their stuff is seriously varied, definitely worth checking out though, it's great music. :)
Interesting that someone sent you a Haken song, their debut album Aquarius is one of my favourite releases of the year (although I know half the band personally so I'm possibly slightly biased) but I wasn't sure if it was something you'd like, as it's sort of epic, quirky, jazzy prog metal. Glad you liked the song though, it's far from one of my favourites on the album so you should definitely check it out (on Grooveshark: https://listen.grooveshark.com/#/artist/Haken/1508788). The album has almost no growling, just that short section in Streams and an even shorter one in the opening track.
-
It's so fucking good. I'm still listening to it, and I wrote Kev's bit on Tuesday :lol
Hang on, Kev sent you a song by a band you've already listened to a reasonable amount?
THAT'S CHEATING!
-
I would say I'm a casual fan.
-
I've actually known about The Cat Empire for many years but never really checked them out. I see Cat Power cds a lot at Cheapo in town here and often hope/think it's The Cat Empire instead.
As for Emanuel & the Fear - Jimme's Song, I'm both glad and relieved to learn you enjoyed that as I probably still consider it my favorite/the best song of 2010. If they weren't so obscure, it would do rather well on the radio. But it's a bit like The Dear Hunter; they are in a way almost too good to find themselves blow up like their talent would allow.
They only have 1 full-length record titled "Listen" and 1 EP. I'll tell you, there are some really good tracks on the record, however, it almost was the tease-of-the-year for me as I thought it might have chance to be album of the year. It's 4-stars, but not a perfect album to me. I do think they have a lot of potential and word is their next album could come as early as next year.
Here's a couple of the other standout tracks from "Listen"

The Finale (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hrf6z9ae0U)

antigoon, Haken on has 1 album, Aquarius. :lol
You should definitely check it out.
-
I would be interested in checking out more of her. I couldn’t find much information when I looked her up, what’s her deal?
She's one of my favorite singers, but she's not terribly well known I'm afraid (I have no idea if that's her real name or not also).
Her 'main' band is Made Out of Babies, which is a pretty aggressive noise-rock/sludge band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnmedj0fYTQ
She also was in Battle of Mice, who's only album Day of Nights has probably the best vocal work of any album I own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDYfX5D_O_w
And she just released a solo album called The Bad Wife earlier this month; the song I sent you is the first track on that.
-
It's so fucking good. I'm still listening to it, and I wrote Kev's bit on Tuesday :lol
Hang on, Kev sent you a song by a band you've already listened to a reasonable amount?

Great solos? Time to bust out the Dragonforce!
He said NOT to send songs with cool solos surrounded by shit.

Clearly you don't know me very well.
Though to be fair, "Valley of the Damned," "Through the Fire and Flames," and "Strike of the Ninja" are enjoyable songs.

I'm not one to pay too much attention to solos, so this one's going to be tough.
-
Clearly you don't know me very well.
Though to be fair, "Valley of the Damned," "Through the Fire and Flames," and "Strike of the Ninja" are enjoyable songs.
Valley of the Damned isn't that bad of an album if you realize beforehand what you're listening to is really cheesy power metal. Too bad they decided to copy the same formula on every subsequent album though.
-
Clearly you don't know me very well.
I couldn't resist such an easy target.
BTW "My Spirit Will Go On" is my favorite. ;)

goon, if you liked Use Somebody you really should pick up 'Only By The Night' by Kings of Leon. Its got some really good songs on it.

PM sent.
DIDN'T EVEN NEED A REMINDER THIS TIME.

This is a pretty hard decision. Don't wanna go down the obvious 'guitar god' route so I'll send something a little more obscure. /riskaaaay

Sent. We'll see what happens.

I'll send mine tomorrow. Had a busy day, but will get to it tomorrow.

It's not my fault he took eight months to listen to the songs we all sent. :p
I'll get something else by the end of today.

Damn. I just listened to "Lay Low" by My Morning Jacket and wanted to see if I could change the song I sent for the last round :lol

Ha! I already converted him to My Morning Jacket over msn. YOU GOT NINJA'D IRL

Round 5 - Solo Showcase
5 Points - Gorille: Caravan Palace, “Suzy”
So, Gorille. You changed your song twice but I like this one better than the other two. I figured since you’re in last I would cut you a break :lol Anway, this song is great. It’s what I would imagine might come out if a gypsy jazz tune and a pop song had raunchy, unprotected sex. The instrumentation in this one is fantastic, as well. I love the call and response section between the violin and the guitar. I can’t believe you replaced this. Twice. It’s awesome!
4 Points - Kev – Nils Lofgren, “Black Books”
Mother of God, what a great solo! I always find it impressive when soloists manage to keep it interesting for over a minute. I really dig Lofgren’s tone as well, the little bit of delay and reverb he uses really fills out the piece. Sounds like there’s a slight chorus effect too but I could be imagining things. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter. This is fantastic.
4 Points - Rich: Freak Kitchen, “Broken Food”
I really like the pop sensibilities in this track. “I Was Raised on Broken Food” is a great hook, and the harmonies in the choruses are very nice It sounds a bit “90s,” but honestly it just makes me nostalgic about my childhood :p I also like the bluesy guitar flourishes throughout the song. The solo is tasteful, though the out-note at the beginning bugs the hell out of me :lol
3 Points - Soundscape: Apes & Androids, “Riverside”
Leave it to you to consistently send me great music from bands that I haven’t even heard of. The chord progression is a bit strange, but I quite like it. Also, I think the band uses electronic sounds really well in an otherwise very earthy, organic-sounding song. There’s so much going on in this song, but I’m never overwhelmed by any of it. It just feels natural, which is excellent. And you’re right, the Brian May harmonies in the solo are very cool! The second 4 slot was between yours and Rich's and it really was a toss-up.
3 Points - SDN: Genesis, “Firth of Fifth”
Congrats on submitting the first long song I actually like a decent amount. There’s a LOT of cool stuff going on here, and unlike a lot of long songs I hear, I can tell why this one’s a bit lengthy. I’ve tended to shy away from prog recently but this song hit me in a good way! I thought the piano work in particular was excellent.
3 Points - Fanica: Bjork, “Venus as a Boy”
Hey, Bjork, thanks for singing a song I like, I appreciate it! Like I said in an earlier round, I love how fragile her voice sounds. It’s quite unique sounding and it’s not always pretty but I think that’s what I like about it. Life isn’t perfect. There’s a lot of cool stuff going on in this song – the percussion is super interesting and the strings give it a romantic quality that I like. This song makes me want to explore Bjork more.
2 Points - Sigz: Agalloch, “I am the Wooden Doors”
Cool acoustic break, bro. No, seriously, cool! I thought the song was a bit long, and I wasn’t a huge fan of the production, but I liked it better than I thought it would. The growls were pretty inoffensive, which is a big deal for me since I don’t listen to much music with ‘em.
2 Points - Ryan: In Flames, “Zombie Inc”
So this isn’t really my thing. I wouldn’t say I disliked it, though and I thought the solo was pretty good! Ya just got beat by a bunch of songs I happened to like better. Such is the nature of this game.
1 Point - SBB: Sikth, “In This Light”
This song was OK, it just felt rather pedestrian to me. Nothing really stood out. I thought the solo had some cool ideas, though, and I liked the tight harmonization in it.

Final Round (6): Open, just don't send me anything over seven minutes :)
Edit: I'm thinking for the last round I'm gonna rate each song out of ten. That way, we end with a bit of fun, everyone's in the running, and the rankings will fluctuate.
-
it goes on for over seven minutes

OH MY GOD ARE PIGS FLYING? ;)
Cool write-ups anyway, it was worth the wait! Now I need to think of something to send for the final round.

I love the call and response section between the violin and the guitar. I can’t believe you replaced this. Twice. It’s awesome!
:lol I guess I really wanted to make a good choice this time! Anyway, I'm glad you liked it! Caravan Palace is one of those underrated bands that needs more recognition IMO. :tup
EDIT: The funny thing is that antigoon's roulette may very well end before DTVT's one! :lol
-
it goes on for over seven minutes
wat
LOL. The youtube link was 7 minutes long. the song stopped after like four or so. Anyway, ranking stands :lol
-
EDIT: The funny thing is that antigoon's roulette may very well end before DTVT's one! :lol
:lol The race is on!
Whenever either of them finishes, feel free to start yours up straight away!
-
It's okay, I'll do mine after DTVT's. :tup
Also, PM sent! I took an enormous risk but yeah this sentence is over
-
Just sent my song in, and I'm very confident in my choice!
-
EDIT: The funny thing is that antigoon's roulette may very well end before DTVT's one! :lol
Considering he started before me should. Also, I did 6 rounds and a playoff and I'll still probably finish before him. Get your facts straight.

It wasn't a shot at you or anything. :chill I'm well aware of all that and you won't see me complaining about your roulette duration. I just pointed out what I thought was a funny situation. :)
-
Missed the part about you not being a fan of long songs, apparently. Whoops. Glad to see you liked it. I love the piano work as well, it's what got me hooked.
That Caravan Palace song sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out.

I wasn't offended...I forgot the "You Mad" pic to show I was just messing with you. We're cool :tup

You should, it's real fun.

The whole disc is all kind of awesome! :tup

The second 4 slot was between yours and Rich's and it really was a toss-up.
glad you dug it. Go ahead and check out the whole album when you get the chance. I regard Blood Moon as probably the most significant album I've listened to the last 5 years, and certainly an all-time favorite now and likely many years/decades to come.
-
PM sent. Hope I'm not the last one again! :lol
Not that it really mattered last time... :P
-
You're not :p
-
GREAT SUCCESS! :D

I'm working on the write-up as I type this but not really because I'm typing this!
But seriously, expect it soon.
-
Jesus you're as bad as Gorille.

:sadpanda:

A parting note: Thank you all so much for participating. I know I got slow at the end, but I assure you it wasn't for lack of caring -- Real life just kinda got in the way, and I apologize for keeping you all waiting for so long! The good news is that I've discovered some really excellent music. Like, really brilliant stuff. So thanks again for sharing, I appreciate it. I'm going to keep updating this thread with my thoughts on all the albums I've acquired throughout the six rounds. I hope you'll check back in :)
So, on to the rankings and final leaderboard.
10/10 Sigz - Children of Nova - Arcaedion
Some songs you have to listen to a lot of times to "get." This wasn't one of them. The energetic opening riff hooked me right away. The vocalist, who at points sounds like a dead ringer for Cedric from The Mars Volta, is wonderful. Some great melodies and harmonies there. To top it all off, there's a pretty sweet instrumental break! Great percussion work. Excellent song.
9/10 Kev - Peter Gabriel - Washing of the Water - Ratpie - Secret World Tour of 1993
Wow. I need to check out Gabriel immediately. This was just excellent…really captivating from start to finish. What a powerful performance. And the lyrics! The lyrics!
8/10 Gorille - Ulver - It Is Not Sound
Cool keyboard solo, bro. :neverusethis: But really, I think this is one of the best songs you've sent me! Your past few submissions have been really good! I'll be checking out Blood Inside ASAP. "WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTT"
8/10 Sonata - Casey James & The Staypuft Kid
WTF did I just listen to? That was great!
7/10 SDN - Peter Gabriel - Red Rain
Yeah. If nothing else, this roulette has shown me that I've been neglecting Peter Gabriel for far too long. Good song!
7/10 Letters - Oceansize - Unfamiliar
I've heard a lot about this band here, but I've never checked them out before. "Unfamiliar" is a very cool song. Just really interesting rhythmically and I liked the soft break in the middle. Although it didn't blow me away, I would be interested in checking out a record.
6/10 SoundscapeMN - Kaddisfly - Via Rail
I thought the chorus to this song was excellent. However, I didn't think the verses quite held up. Not that they were bad or anything -- they just didn't really hold my attention. The speaking parts, though short, were a bit jarring as well. Great guitar work, though.
5/10 Rich - Amplifier - Neon
Interesting song. I really like the vocal harmonies in the end of the song, but I wasn't too big on the melodies throughout. I dunno, didn't tickle my fancy. Kinda neither here nor there. Hence the 5.
4/10 SBB - The Darkness - Hazel Eyes
So I thought I was listening to a Queen song until the vocals came in…and then I still thought I was listening to a Queen song. The best part about this song was the guitar solo at the end. The falsetto vocals and the bagpipes or whatever irritated the shit out of me :lol
FINAL LEADERBOARD
Kev - 29 Points
Fanörk - 26 Points
Sigz - 23 Points
Rich - 22 Points
SDN - 22 Points
Soundscape - 21 Points
Gorille - 21 Points
Letters - 20 Points
SBB - 17 Points
Congrats, Kev!
-
Great way to end it, and congrats Kev.
This was fun Joe. :tup
-
I failed hard. But I had fun, took risks, and introduced you to two lovely ladies which I hope you still enjoy. Thanks for having me, Joe. You're a great gal.
P.S: Oh and kiss my ass for not liking The Darkness. They REEEEWWWL!
-
hmm, well, I debated on a number of songs off Set Sail the Prairie to send you, but Via Rail remains my favorite and I find it the most interesting; how odd the meter is and the shift in pacing. Even the lyrics really grabbed me one of the 1st times I heard it.
antigoon, if you haven't heard the whole record though, you should when the time allows. Your taste would very naturally appeal to Kaddisfly.
-
Oh man, why didn't I think of Children of Nova! I haven't listened to those guys in ages, though.
Glad you liked Casey James & the Staypuft Kid!
-
That's three Peter Gabriel songs this roulette, two from me and Kev, and that cover I sent you earlier :lol. His solo stuff is miles above his stuff in Genesis, go get yourself a copy of III or So now.
Congrats to Kev. This was fun, Antigoon!
-
Glad you liked the song! Blood Inside is amazing, you should indeed check it out! :tup
-
So, what do I win? :lol :coolio
-
Joe...if you are lacking Peter Gabriel I suggest you fix that immediately. Someone at DTF said that Secret World Live is their favorite concert DVD (I think it was Kev), and that is an excellent place to start if you don't have the money to drop all his albums.
-
Yep, that was probably me. When I finally got it a few years back, I swear, I must have watched it several times a week for literally months. That's how addicted to it I was.
-
Secret World ain't a bad place to start with Peter Gabriel at all, but its missing a lot of stuff from Security and III, which are both essential, though it does a great job of capturing the art/world music/pop style of Gabriel.
-
I gave this DVD to my dad last Christmas and he didn't bother watching it yet :lol I think I'll watch it with him soon enough! :tup
-

P.S: Oh and kiss my ass for not liking The Darkness. They REEEEWWWL!
:lol That's true though. So glad you sent me Brooke Fraser. In fact, why don't I get these album reviews/discussions started
Brooke Fraser - Flags
This is a really superb singer/songwriter record. Fraser's voice is just beautiful and the song arrangements, which go beyond what I'd expect from an album like this, really compliment it well. If you like to listen to cute girls singing great, concise tunes, check this album out right away. Lyrics are pretty great, too. Thank sneakyblueberry for this one.
SBB sent this tune, "Crows and Locusts," for my roulette.
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Crows+and+Locusts/3eGn00
My personal favorite is "Coachella." Listening to it really just puts me in a great mood.
https://listen.grooveshark.com/s/Coachella/3eGmHs
Really, check her out if it sounds interesting to you.
On the subject of Peter Gabriel, I'll probably check out III before I jump into a live recording, but I'll definitely keep that DVD in mind.
EDIT: So I was at Best Buy today doing some Christmas shopping, and what do I come across? Secret World Live. I figured it was fate, so I bought it.
-
D'oh, threw it away at the end!
Ah well, it was worth a try! Still did fairly well overall and hopefully introduced you to some new bands :)
-
I wanna talk about Arcade Fire, because they are an amazing band. I don't know how many fans there are here, but I feel like there should be more.
Kev sent me "Sprawl II" from The Suburbs for my roulette round for songs from 2010, and it kinda rekindled my interest in the band. I had owned and listened to both Funeral and Neon Bible, but even though I knew they were quality recordings, I just wasn't captivated by them. When I heard "Sprawl II" and was subsequently blown away by how great it was, I knew I needed to give the band a second chance. I've been listening to Neon Bible constantly the past week, and I'm just really getting into The Suburbs now. They're both excellent. I listened to Funeral last night and while I don't think it's as great as their two most recent albums, it's still damn good.
Besides "Sprawl II," which is probably the song of the year for me, my favorite song is "Intervention."
Thanks again, Kev :tup
-
I really can't get into The Arcade Fire. They're like Animal Collective to me; everyone seems to love them but I just don't get it.
-
It took me a while, but damn it was worth it.
-
It took me a while, but damn it was worth it.
Ditto.
"Sprawl II" is easily my favorite from The Suburbs.
-
I believe there's an Arcade Fire thread that yours truly started. Great band. All of their albums are great.

I don't have that album, but I have What to Do With Daylight, and there are some fantastic songs on there. I don't know how much of her Christian faith shines on the record you have, but it peeks through on this album. Especially the song Arithmetic. I love her work with Hillsong United a lot more though.
Where does one sign up to get in line to do one of these games?
-
There's a stickiedieididdeid thread up there.
-
I really can't get into The Arcade Fire. They're like Animal Collective to me; everyone seems to love them but I just don't get it.
dude I'm with ya. So, we both agree about The Stiletto Formal being awesome, and those 2 bands (Arcade Fire and Animal Collective..although I'll admit, Strawberry Jam I don't hate, but their Hype factor makes them totally overated). Arcade Fire, are like Radiohead to me in some ways. I like some (many?) artists who get compared to them, but I find their music itself to be soul-less and lacking something unique, addictive, or reason to want to hear it again. The Hype factor puts them even further down to me. I have yet to hear 1 song by them that I found even good, let alone amazing.
I would much rather listen to bands like The Polyphonic Spree, Revere, or Emanuel & the Fear who do the wall-of-sound thing a lot better than anything I've ever heard from Arcade Fire.
-
Arcade Fire? Soulless? WHAT?
Some songs that should make you change your mind, or at least get that horribly wrong "soulless" thought out of your mind:
-Sprawl II
-Intervention
-My Body is a Cage
-Rebellion (Lies)
-Neighborhood 3 (Power Out)
-Wake Up (the one everyone knows)
Radiohead is awesome too. You just fail. :P
-
Arcade Fire is awesome. Glad you are digging them, antigoon!
Definitely major LOL at calling them soulless or not unique.
And not liking a band because of supposed hype is always dumb. How good a band is has nothing to do with hype, popularity, etc.
-
Yeah, I don't get the soulless thing either *shrug*
Anyway, I'm starting to get into Funeral. Une Anne Sans Lumiere and Neighborhood #4 are beautiful songs.
-
And not liking a band because of supposed hype is always dumb. How good a band is has nothing to do with hype, popularity, etc.
I completely agree, not that I think Soundscape has had his opinion changed by the hype, I think he just meant his frustration over them being overrated is heightened by it.
-
Anyway, I'm starting to get into Funeral. Une Anne Sans Lumiere and Neighborhood #4 are beautiful songs.
Those were initially two of my favorites, but lately, I cannot get enough of "Rebellion (Lies)," "Power Out" and "Laika," the last of which I didn't like that much at first, but absolutely love now. :hat

You should really grab Albertine and Flags, they're both light years ahead of WTDWD and there is more than just a peek of her faith on these records. With WTDWD you can really hear the tracks where she's maybe made sacrifices in terms of her message in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, but its not so on the later two, it really feels like every song is written from her heart. Albertine especially. I highly recommend them, sir. Way better than any of her Hillsong stuff.
-
So I've listened to The Suburbs a bit more, and this pretty much sums up my opinion:
I find their music itself to be soul-less and lacking something unique, addictive, or reason to want to hear it again.
None of their stuff is bad by any stretch, it's just... bland. Wish I could see what everyone else seems to see in them.
-
:(
Have you tried Funeral?
-
Or Neon Bible? Its all good, really. I'd still say Sprawl II is the complete antithesis of that comment by SoundscapeMN, Sigz.
-
I would have said Neon Bible too but I feel that Funeral is their warmest sounding record, if that makes any sense. But I mean OBVS THEIR BUTH GRAET.
-
I'd still say Sprawl II is the complete antithesis of that comment by SoundscapeMN, Sigz.
Sorry, I specifically listened to Sprawl II multiple times and I simply don't see the appeal at all.
-
I blame your short hair. And Nick
-
Haven't listened to them enough to formulate a proper opinion yet, but I've given both Funeral and Neon Bible cursory spins in the past and both times I thought 'these guys sound like Springsteen. These guys are awesome!' I'll 'properly' check them out soon.
