Title: Tuning?
Post by: splent on October 17, 2010, 09:03:49 PM
Don't know how in tune you are with classical music, but before Bach helped to popularise tempered tuning, Baroque tuning was about a half step lower than how it is today (like F then sonded like E today, D sounded like Db, etc).

Which to you prefer?  I love Baroque usic, so I prefer baroque tuning.  But how about you?

This is probably in the wrong forum, as only musicians will be really be able to tell the difference.
That being said, I tuned to half-step down for many years before going down to D-standard (as well as some dropped-C songs).
I also like 7 strings when used properly. So I have no issue with lower tunings. Standard has gotten dull, although there are plenty of bands that have kind of killed the creativity of alternate choices as well.

Really? Mine is CGCGCE. Since E is the major 3rd of C, it gives it that happy Devin Townsend sound.

Oh, on a 7 string? Hm, that would be interesting. Mines on acoustic, so no 7th string. I only use the tuning for acoustic stuff, mostly happy. I haven't even tried writing metal in it.

It's a fantastic tuning, really. I only use two tunings for the music I write, and Open C is the main one. 70% of what I've done is in open C

I think I've written 4 songs in open C, but they're all acoustic. Maybe one day I'll tune of my electric guitars to open C and play around. Who knows.

Wow, I didn't realize the popularity of Open C!  Typically I write acoustic songs in Open C Major (some of my best stuff, actually), but as of late, down-tuning the high E string to a D# has sounded AWESOME and helped me write two new songs in two sittings.  Pretty cool stuff, I suggest y'all give it a whirl.

Ohhh a minor 3rd, I'll have to give that a try!

I've never dabbled in different tunings, I have only played in standard tuning through the years. I will have to check out some other tunings.

Used to use Open D for Symphony X. But I came back to standard.

I use 90% standard and 10% Drop D tuning for my band. In my own time I experiment with lower tunings, but it's quite a hassle to integrate such a tuning into an entire band if everyone is just playing normal guitars.

I think S&M era Metallica proved how badass E flat tuning is. Myself, I use standard or a half step down most of the time, but it's just because I'm too lazy to tune down properly at risk of breaking a string because I do it so impatiently. Open C is always very nice though.

How on earth do you break strings downtuning??

:lol
Sorry, meant to say tuning up for some acoustic tunings. With downtuning my electric I'm normally to lazy and I don't have a tuner so it's all by ear, and consequently it's normally at least a bit off.

You've all missed Splent's point.

I vote for modern tuning.
