This is the official Mars Volta appreciation and information thread. I love this band, got into them sometime after Frances The Mute came out, and have been following them ever since. Ive had a love/hate relationship through the years, but ive always listened to them with interest. an example of the love/hate thing with them is i could listen to a song or 2 by them and get so pumped up i could take on the world. on the other side, i recently felt like throwing on Frances the Mute, but i took the little known title track on my iPod and put it on as the first track instead of the last track, and boy was that a bad idea. My mood was totally drained and the rest of the day i felt "meh". Any TMV fans will understand what im talking about (if youve ever heard the title track that is)
(for people who dont know, the title track is not on the proper album)
anyway, my favorite album has been Amputecture ever since it came out. I could never understand the love De-Loused In The Comatorium gets, though i appreciate it now, and is in the top 3 for me. Their recent Octahedron was a big letdown for me. Besides the fact that it came out the same day BC&SL came out (which were both purchased that same day) it just wasnt what i quite expected from the band. I knew it was going to be a softer album, but i guess i still expected more. Since You've Been Wrong, Cotopaxi, and Luciforms were the only songs i 'kind of' liked, but the album got shelved pretty quickly.
now i love the album, and all their albums (including Bedlam in Goliath, which i havent even mentioned yet). Being used to their crazy sound, Octahedron was a little disappointing, but i think it will get even better over time, in context with whatever they release in the future.
Speaking of the future, anyone know any news about their new album? i know pre-production started in May, but havent heard much since.
The Mars Volta :metal
-
I'm just getting into them. I like.
-
I only have Bedlam, which I find enjoyable despite people claiming it's one of their weakest albums.
-
I only have their first album. I think it's an OK record.
-
for me it goes like this
Amputecture
Bedlam in Goliath
Frances The Mute
De-Loused in the Comatorium
Tremulent EP
Octahedron
-
Here's my ranking
Good
1.) De-Loused
Decent
2.) Frances
Bad
3.) Bedlam
4.) Amputecture
Shit that goes into my "Least Favorite Records Ever
5.) Octahedron
So yeah. Pretty much not looking forward to anything they do in the future.

My Ranking:
Frances
Deloused
Octahedron
Bedlam
I have not listened to Amputechture or Tremulant yet so I can't rightly rank them.

Ugh, the title track is not very good at all. I'm very glad they decided to keep it off the album.

Yeah, about Octahedron, I really liked it when it first came out (especially Teflon) and I listened the hell out of it then, but I just threw it in my CD player about a month or two ago and it has not aged well at all. Some good songs, but a lot of it is just boring now.
Speaking of the future, anyone know any news about their new album? i know pre-production started in May, but havent heard much since.
Coming out this year last I heard and I'm looking forward to it.
-
TMV is excellent.
-
I like the Mars Volta, but I kinda have to be in the mood for them. De-Loused and Octahedron are the only albums I can listen through all the way. Great stuff. Frances is also great, but I've found listening through that whole thing is kind of a chore. Bedlam is okay, bit too much filler in there. Amputechture I never listen to.
Favorite Songs:
Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus
La Via L'Viaquez
Desparate Graves
Teflon
Roulette Dares
Televators
Goliath
Viscera Eyes
Aberinkula
Tourniquet Man
Agadez
Veil Cerpin Taxt
Drunkship of Lanterns
Lots of great songs from these guys. They just need to reel it in sometimes. Now I'm gonna listen to De-Loused for the first time in a while. :D

it wouldnt fit on a single disc release anyway, it would have had to have been split onto 2 cds.
but yeah that title track isnt so hot.
3 of my favorite songs are Tetragrammaton, Viscera Eyes and Day Of The Baphomets; which is part of the reason Amputechture is my favorite. But im also a big fan of their entire discography (Octahedron i have to be in the mood for though i like it)
-
I've been meaning to give them another go recently but I just haven't got around to it.
-
I haven't listened to them besides a few songs here and there in probably two years. I used to love them though.
-
for me it goes like this
Amputecture
Bedlam in Goliath
Frances The Mute
De-Loused in the Comatorium
Tremulent EP
Octahedron
Hey, I thought I was the only one here who thought Amputechture was any good! I've seen a lot of people on hear say its a weak album, and even MP called it 'unfocused'. Glad to have you on board :D
My ranking:
De-Loused in the Comatorium
Amputechture
Frances the Mute
Octahedron
Bedlam in Goliath
BiG was a huge letdown for me, way too much filler and not nearly enough gold. Frances has some awesome tracks but just rambles on too much for my liking. I really only like 'Copernicus' on Octahedron, but that is a damn fine song. Amputechture is freakin awesome, Vermillion is probably in my TMV top 5. De-loused is my favourite because the songwriting is more cohesive and (dare I say it) commercial.
-
Amputechture is the only thing they've done that I don't get off to, but even it has its moments.
-
whats with all the Bedlam hate?
my ranking:
Frances
Bedlam
Deloused
Octahedron
Amutechture
-
Bedlam has putrid production.
-
Frances the Mute is the best them.

This is very true, but I still love it. A lot of the songs are just way out there, bombastic, and full of energy with a lot of great, musical hooks. I can understand why people wouldn't like it, but listening to all of Cassandra Gemini always gets me pumped.
Bedlam has putrid production.
Ugh, it does.
I was listening to some TMV at work last week and when the last song on Frances finished and Bedlam started up, what a stark difference in quality. The songs being pretty meh certainly didn't help.

im a little surprised at the low reception for this thread. For a board who likes Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Transatlantic, Riverside, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, etc. (8 of the biggest prog rock bands in this decade) i thought there would be more fans or casual listeners of The Mars Volta; as they are in the top 10 most popular prog bands of the last 10 years.
-
I like their first two records a lot, but have been pretty indifferent about the rest. But those first two are most excellent. But I have to be in the right mood to listen to them, kind of like King Crimson. Frances the Mute is the bomb, with "Cassandra Gemini" being stupid good. :coolio

Riverside, Spock's Beard, and The Flower Kings are nowhere near "big."
And threads do die, man. Hell, Coheed is bigger than most of the bands you listed and that thread hasn't seen much activity. Band threads usually pick up when the band is either starting to release info about a new album or if they're on the road.
-
I absolutely adore Octahedron. You're all wrong.
-
I absolutely adore Octahedron. You're all wrong.
Yeah I don't understand Octahedron hate either.
-
TMV is great. Energy filled, fun to drive, sport and bounce to.
BTW I love the production on Bedlam. It's one of the most In Your Face records, I've ever heard.
-
I pretty much bed my prog roots with TMV. It all started after I was getting into Coheed, I heard Viscera Eyes and went to buy the album almost immediately. The first song that made me realize that I loved long songs was "Day of The Baphomets." I think that's my favorite track off of Amputechture (which I now proudly own on vinyl *drools*). Then I got Frances for $22, I remember cause I was pissed that I had to pay that much. There was no way I was leaving the store without it. Then fell in love with Comatourium and had to wait for Bedlam. I remember being really unsatisfied with Bedlam. I think, now, it was because all I listened to was Frances the Mute and I was just not prepared for the balls-all-out style it took. But Thomas Pridgen kicked that album's ass. Loved Octahedron. That was the album I was waiting for.
I do remember a LONG ass time that I didn't listen to them because I grew tired of the inconsistent and erratic nature of the songs. I couldn't take the intangibility they had. I don't know, it was like... too weird. But now I like 'em again. SO TMV FTW.
By the by, I'm listening to At the Drive-In more and more these days. Good stuff.

maybe 'big' was the wrong word. i know Riverside have gained in popularity pretty quickly in the short time they've been around. TFK and SB have just been around a long time. they ARE known in prog circles
and i forgot Symphony X
-
Been quite into these guys lately.
And Bedlam is probably my favourite album of theirs. Something about it...

i know what you mean, i love the intensity. The only track im not fond of is the one after Goliath (shows how much i care about it, dont even remember the name)

I don't hate, but it hasn't aged well for me at all. I loved it when it came out, now I just like it.

So I'm listening to my 2-disc remix of Frances The Mute and felt like posting some of my thoughts on the band.
I've only really given FTM any chance of listening-to, although from what I recall of the debut album, it was pretty good. However, the three albums that followed I've spun once and completely neglected over the last few years. When their last album came out, I bought it almost out of habit (or perhaps because it was just there and something new to get), but I've not really listened to it. I only ever really listen to FTM. Is that weird? I suppose the fact that it's a concept album kind of helps. I'm a sucker for concept/conceptual albums.
And because I can't be TOO satisfied with officially released tracklistings, I had to throw in the title track (at the beginning, as is the usually understood placement for it) on my remix, and I re-edited the movement-indexes for "Cassandra Gemini" to fit the sections mentioned on the album artwork:
Disc One - 45:31
Frances The Mute (14:33)
1. I. In Thirteen Seconds - 4:33
2. II. Nineteen Sank While Six Would Swim - 6:00
3. III. Five Would Grow And One Was Dead - 4:00
Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus (13:02)
4. I. Sarcophagi - 0:45
5. II. Umbilical Syllables - 3:31
6. III. Facilis Descenus Averni - 4:00
7. IV. Con Safo - 4:46
8. The Widow - 5:50
9. L’ Via L’ Viaquez - 12:06
Disc Two - 45:56
Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn’t Holy Anymore (13:24)
1. I. Vade Mecum - 4:16
2. II. Pour Another Icepick - 3:47
3. III. Pisacis (Phra-Men-Ma) - 3:43
4. IV. Con Safo (Reprise) - 1:38
Cassandra Gemini (32:32)
5. I. Tarantism - 11:26
6. II. Plant A Nail In The Navel Stream - 9:37
7. III. Faminepulse - 7:37
8. IV. Multiple Spouse Wounds - 2:58
9. V. Sarcophagi (Reprise) - 0:54
It's a really good listen through, and while the first part of the title track does drag a bit, I think those opening sounds/bells/noises really set the mood for the album. It is a bit long, but I think they work with setting up the song, and the whole album. I'm not sure what it is about this album, but the mix of styles and sounds really seems to gel, and it doesn't sound TOO forced as in "Hey, we're throwing in these sounds just because we can"...it's a very natural-sounding to me. There's plenty of mellow sections, noise sections, jams and solos to love, and there's a lot to take in, but it's a rewarding listen if you stick through it.
Anyways, that's about it. Of the three albums that followed, which should I really give my attention to if I want to try and give them another chance outside of this album?
-Marc.

Interesting remix.
Can't say I'd prefer it to the original, since I don't really like FtM the song, but interesting.

Give Amputechture a try. It took a bit to grow on me, but I really like it now. "Day of the Baphomets" and "Tetragrammatron" are my favorite tracks. Bedlam is about 70% garbage, but some people swear by it.
-
I'm a fairly moderate fan of TMV. I really love Deloused and Bedlam. Very enjoyable albums with a lot going on. I really enjoy their jazzy influenced stuff.
-
I have *very* mixed feelings about TMV. Deloused is one of my favorite albums ever and I think Frances is brilliant but its transitions are too long. I really need to be in the right mood to sit through the whole record.
I haven't been able to get into any of their other albums. Granted, I only gave them one or two listens, but they didn't immediately grab me like the first two did. May have to give them a few more tries to see if they do anything for me. Love "Since we've been wrong" though.
-
TMV is definitely one of my favorite bands ever... My favorites are probably Bedlam in Goliath and France the Mute. The first time I popped in Bedlam I had the biggest smile on my face... it's just really where I was hoping they would go. I love crazy off-the-wall drummers and the resulting chaos. The drum sound really does it for me too.
Does anybody else listen to Omar's solo material? It's not all great but there's a few good ones. I really like Old Money, which was apparently supposed to be the follow-up to FTM before he decided to take it in a different direction. Xenophanes and Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo are pretty interesting listens as well.
-
Amputechture
Frances The Mute
De-Loused in the Comatorium
Bedlam in Goliath
Octahedron
Oh, and Tetragrammaton = their best song
-
Just getting into these guys. So far, both Bedlam and Octahedron are excellent, if completely opposite ends of the spectrum. That being said, Bedlam edges Octa because of it's intense energy.
-
Octa is the best them, haters gonna hate.
-
Octahedron is probably my second favorite Volta album.
-
Anyone excited for the new TMV album??? Apparently it is finished and recorded, they're just waiting on the label.
-
YES! Omar is coming here too, I really wanna see him but I got classes so I'll just wait for the next Volta tour.

Wonder how many they threw out before they got to this one...

I would really like to see TMV live at some point. I imagine it would be one hell of a show.
And drugs. Thousands of drugs.

When I saw them it actually wasn't a great experience overall. Cedric was pissed off at us because some drunken douchebag threw something at the stage. The show only lasted for an hour and a half, closing with "the Widow," (at least I think they did, I couldn't take the bad sound anymore and left after that) after which Cedric said "See, I told you we can be your friend!) Plus the sound (as I said) was absolutely HORRIBLE. I don't even remember if they played anything off De-Loused, majority of the set was Bedlam and Amputechture stuff, though they did play Cygnus, which I got a kick out of, and some of the improv was cool.
-
BARE THEM
SEVENS
THREE TO A PALL
Amputechture is amazing, the only song that doesn't really blow me away is El Ciervo Vulnerado, simply because it sounds like an inferior version of Vicarious Atonement to me.

I've had Bedlam for the longest time, and had given Deloused a few listens as well, but am just now giving the rest of their albums a listen. Tremulant is fantastic, with Eunuch Provocateur being possibly their best song that I've heard so far. Currently on my first listen of Frances, and it is absolutely blowing my mind. Have yet to hear the rest.
-
if you like "Eunuch Provocateur" on Tremulant, i recommend hunting down the re-recorded version they made for De-loused. it's goddamn killer.
-
I love how the opening of Frances the Mute (album) is quiet, and then the end of the album is the same thing but louder. So awesome :metal
-
IT ENDS WHERE IT BEGAN ZOMG
-
I'm going to see them on June 25th! :caffeine: :caffeine:
-
The closest they are playing here is Philly with Soundgarden... really wanna go, but it's a bit too far for me, and I guess tickets already sold out.
-
I was at the library. There was a copy of Frances the Mute there. It had white stuff all over it. SOMEONE CAME :metal

Fun playing drums along to Inertiatic ESP.

These guys need to announce the new album! Omar's frequent solo albums are great, but I need some new Volta!
-
Omar has like 8564831314895432 albums, doesn't he?
-
he does indeed. anyone unsure about where to start in Omar's solo discog ought to listen through the Telestrion compilation for an idea of where to start: https://omardigital.rodriguezlopezproductions.com/album/telesterion
-
Yes Id like them to announce a release date soon, the album has been completed 2 or 3 times. Didnt Omar say he finished the album back in 2009 and then scrapped it and started over?
-
I have been listening to them so much lately. I had to share it with someone, or someones.
-
Frances the Mute is the Volta album I have been listening to for the longest.... but I think I am JUST starting to fully appreciate it.
Especially the title track.... god damn!
-
The album I've listened to the longest is Amputechture, however, my favorite album by far has got to be The Bedlam in Goliath. Thomas Pridgen is a maniac on the drums, and I love every minute of it.
-
Especially the title track.... god damn!
A damn shame it's not included on the disc, makes the album so much better!!
-
Wait. There's a title track not included on the album?
-

Yes.

Wait. There's a title track not included on the album?
Yes.
Looks like I know what I'm about to listen to.
-
I haven't heard it either. I knew about it though. I never thought Frances was that great, tbh. De-Loused is the win.
-
Frances is the album that has stuck with me the longest, I listen to it a few times a month at least, while lately I haven't been listening to any of TMV.
I'd still say my favorite album by them is Amputechture though
-
THIS NEVER HAPPENED
BUT I SAW YOU LEAVE

-
While this is the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group, it consists of like 70% of who's gonna be on the new album including their new drummer Deantoni Parks, who is my favorite drummer at the moment, and let me tell you, he is AMAZING. Just watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlhKf7FM7qs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlhKf7FM7qs)

Jon Theodore is still the best them.

I didn't do what you're implying. I'm pretty sure I just forgot to put the whole album on my external hard drive from my friend's, who also doesn't do what you're implying, computer.
-

When I bought Frances the Mute and ripped it into my hard drive, for some reason it puts parts of Cassandra Gemini as if they were from Miranda.
-
I believe the title track of Frances the Mute would have been the first song on the album. I made a playlist on my iPod and put it first (it segue ways right into the real first song). I'll be honest, it ruined the flow of the album. I turned it off during The Widow. I honestly like the song itself, but it made me lose interest in listening to the album. I'm glad they kept it off.
-
If they had left out the long sections of birds chirping and static and whatnot, they could have fit it on the album. I think FTM is one of the best albums ever, but the useless noise is the only thing that drags it down, IMO.
-

Same thing happened to me.. Had to fix it by looking up the time stamps on Wikipedia. :o
-
The problem is that I don't know what I'm missing. I have all the track names, and on Wikipedia it just says that the cuts don't match up to the subtitles, and it just lists Cassandra Geminni seven times, so I have no way of knowing what's not there.
-
Miranda ends after the "Cygnus" reprise. Cassandra starts when things get loud again.
Miranda is only 13:08 long. The remaining tracks are all part of Cassandra. When I first ripped it, it was screwy too, but my final tracklisting has 8 parts of C.G.
-
Thank you. I just realized that the 14 minutes are in Miranda. Problem figured out, now I just need to fix it.

Do you think you would be able to give me your tracklisting? I don't know what to name the songs.
-
I just named them Cassandra Gemini 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
-
I use Cassandra Gemini I - Cassandra Gemini VIII.
-
Thank you for the help. I went the Roman Numerals, they just seem to fit better.
-
Too bad the band just didn't track the song in it's own sections like it lists on the album. Fortunately, when I was big into the album and listened to it a lot, and had obtained the title track from buying the "The Widow" single, I mixed the album together and re-cut the last song so it fit (where I thought) the sections started and ended. I posted about it back on the first page -

FTM is probably my favorite TMV album, but then again, I've not fairly given the others a chance, even though I own them all.
-Marc.
-
After I figured out that they named the songs wrong on the listing, I just went and made Cassandra Gemini one song, as it should, runs for 32:32.
-
What program did you use?

That's what I did too. It's not like I'm going to listen to them seperately.

Audacity. It's free and quite easy to use.

You can also do this in iTunes. There's an option to "Join Tracks" before you rip them. Afterwards, you can rename it properly and enjoy a single track ripped from a multi-part piece.

Frances won't leave me alone. I hear it when I'm awake, when I'm asleep, between the two. I CAN'T ESCAPE IT!!!!

That should be a lyric of the album.

-Marc.
So you CAN do that?! Every time I tried doing that for Cassandra Gemini last year it didn't work. I wonder what I did wrong.
There also seems to be weird skipping sounds throughout the album that made me think the tracks ripped from the CD badly. But then I ripped a friends copy and the skips were in the same exact spots. I'm not sure if they're part of the music or not, but it sounds like those quick little click/chirps you get in a song when the computer hasn't ripped it properly.
Otherwise, I love the album.
-
:lol I thought the same thing with the clicks. That is actually part of the album though.
-
indeed, there's just a buttload of pops and clicks in "Cassandra" (mostly "Faminepulse," methinks) from, presumably, bad tape editing.
-
After seeing The Mars Volta name here for many many times before and after seeing this thread recently I finally decided that I will give TMV a try. I started with Frances The Mute and even though it was a lot different and experimental to absorb on first listen I loved some parts very much like L'via L'viaquez middle part of Miranda and some parts of Cassandra Geminni... But today I tried Amputechture for the first time and Day Of The Baphomets totally blew my mind I'm listening to it for at least tenth time over and over again this is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard :D Whole album is great but that song OMG!!! So I guess I'm starting to get into the band a little :lol Which album would you recommend me next after I will absorb these two?
-
I say go back to where it all started with De-Loused.
-
DE-LOUSED
-
I feel like no one talks about The Bedlam in Goliath or Octahedron in this thread. It's all pre-Thomas Pridgen talk. To be quite honest, Goliath is my favorite Volta album.
-
Octahedron was my first TMV album, actually. I really like it. Seems much more slow-paced and "quieter" than FTM, but it has a lot of catchy hooks.
-
That's the album that I've listened to the least. I don't have money to go out and buy new albums and I haven't for a while now, so getting new music has been put on a hold.
-
Octahedron is the one album I listen to the least, I should listen to it more, I really like Goliath though!
-
Right dude? Thomas Pridgen is a maniac on that album. That's really the album that got me into TMV. I love the speed and energy. It just makes me want to go insane... in a good way.
-

Pridgen's a monster, but I'm still partial to Jon Theodore's stuff in De-Loused.
-
Tetragrammaton is my favourite for drums.

I see where you're coming from. Pridgen goes insane, where Theodore has a more methodical approach. The albums are so different it's almost a new band.
-
I should've added FtM in that post.
-
Finally listened to Deloused, 'twas very good. Needs more listens, though. Will check out more of their stuff in the coming week.
-

Just thought that I would post this. Dave is a fucking maniac during this song. It's pure awesome.
EDIT: Just realized I put it in as an image instead of a hyperlink. It has been fixed.
-
I can just feel the heads screaming in pain as he hits them! :lol
-
I'm suprised his sticks didn't break. He hits the snare so hard, and a bunch of the times he's getting rim shots. Splinter in the hands, arms, and face just waiting to happen. That aside, he's one hell of a drummer. He doesn't bring anything new to band (which is why they dumped him in favor of Parks), but man can he play.
-
EXO-SKELETAL JUNCTION AT THE RAILROAD DELAYYYYYED!!!
-
The bass solo in Day of the Baphomets... :hat
-
So for some odd reason, I only found out today that TMV was formed by two members of At The Drive-In. I've heard plenty about them and how they were a very influential post-hardcore band. I normally don't really like that genre but I decided to check it out anyway since they share a vocalist and guitarist with TMV. To my surprise, I really really enjoyed the album.
-
Welcome to 10 years ago bro. lol jk. Its weird hearing Cedric sing in ATDI, sounds heapsa different.
-
Yeah, I really don't care for the way he sings in ATDI. Something about it...
TMV was a slow burner for me. I hated them at first, but something kept bringing me back. Now, I love 'em. Maybe the same will happen with me and ATDI, but so far, I haven't felt that need to return and listen again. Yet.
-
I heard TMV first, and knowing that Cedric was the singer I went in assuming it would be similar to a point, and BAM. Not at all, I could tell it was him, but it was just so different. Love At the Drive-In though.
-
Yeah I'm listening to Relationship of Command for the third time tonight. I really love this.
-
One Armed Scissor is a cool track, also the one with Iggy Pop, I forget the name though.
-
I love Alpha Centauri. That kills.
-
I haven't listened to anything but RoC. I think I'm going to delve into their other music tomorrow.
-
I've only ever heard In/Casino/Out, there are quite a few weak tracks on that.
-
You should definitely check out Relationship of Command, there's just so much energy. Although Omar says that it's the one album he's done that he can't listen to.
-
I heard AtDI first. My mom is a huge AtDI fan. When I was first getting into prog I freaked when I learned the same guys had a prog band. :lol
-
Relationship of Command is fucking awesome.
-

Listening to De-Loused right now :metal

Listening to De-Loused right now :metal
We've got the same mind set. What song are you on? I'm currently on Eriatarka.
-
Roulette Dares.
-
What a great song. It's one of, if not the best on the album in my opinion.
-
Roulette Dares.
Love this song.
-
Anyone ever listen to De Facto? They're not like The Mars Volta or At the Drive-In, but it's still Omar and Cedric, and it also just happens to be awesome.
-
The Bedlam in Goliath :heart :heart :heart
Man, Ilyena was amazing. At the end of it, I just screamed out "OH MY GOD!!!!" :lol
-
The Bedlam in Goliath :heart :heart :heart
Man, Ilyena was amazing. At the end of it, I just screamed out "OH MY GOD!!!!" :lol
That is, by far, my favorite Volta album. Thomas Pridgen is a freak of nature with a drum kit. I love it.
-
Bedlam is a great album, sadly it is too long, so I cannot rate it among Volta's best.
-
Where would you put it?
Goliath
De-Loused
Frances
Amputechture
Octahedron (haven't listened to it much, so it doesn't really have a rating yet)
-
It suffers the fate off most 70+ minute albums. :(
But it's ok because I would take more Volta over less Volta, even if it makes it a more difficult complete album listening experience.
Also giving a shout out to the last few minutes of Eunuch Provocateur. So fucking amazing!
-
Until you guys brought it up, I never realized how long the album actually is. 75 minutes is a lot of music, but I love every one of them.
-

Definitely. The songs themselves are great. I just know personally, albums over 70 minutes long are kind of hard for me to sit all the way through. But like I said, I wouldn't turn down having the extra music, because it's all good!
-
Oh my Jesus! Cotopaxi is catchy as HELL. I've never actually wanted to dance to a Mars Volta song before.

NEVER HEARD A MAN SPEAK LIKE THIS MAN BEFORE!!!!!!

I can honestly say that Octahedron has two good songs. I now know why people don't like it that much.
-
I can honestly say that Octahedron has two good songs. I now know why people don't like it that much.
There're lots of good songs on Octahedron, though it does have the (dis)honor of having their most boring track ever in "With Twilight As My Guide."
-
I should have said two songs that I liked. The other songs are necessarily bad, I just can;t get into them. However, Cotopaxi is fucking awesome.
-
It took me awhile to get into anything beyond Teflon, but it was a pretty rewarding album (like all Volta albums) even if it's nowhere near my favorite.
-
For some reason I thought Teflon was gonna be just an amazing track, but when I listened to it, it just didn't do anything for me.
-
Desperate Graves, Halo of Nembutals and Since We've Been Wrong are amazing too imho.
-
Since We've Been Wrong is the other track that I really like, but I just can't get into the other ones. I'll just have to listen to it some more I guess.
-
That was the first track I liked from Octahedron, but the one that really made me consider the album worthwhile is Halo of Nembutals. One of their best songs ever for me.
-

Get out.
Bur srsly, this is by far my favourite TMV album. To be honest I'm not too fussed on their other stuff.
-
I really need to get some TMV stuff soon.. I only have their debut yet.
-

Good, it's their best one.

Get Frances the Mute, it's their best one.
-
Amputechture all the way.
-
The Bedlam in Goliath. That is all.
-
Get them all! :D
But make sure you get Frances the Mute and Amputechture first. They're the bestest.
-
Get them all! :D
But make sure you get The Bedlam in Goliath first. It's the bestest.
Fixed.
-
Noooooo.
Then again, I'm not much of a Goliath fan really. Never been able to get into it.
-
Ilyena.... the end is just so incredible!! :heart
I wish I had my good speakers right now, cause I wanna blast the fuck out of that song
-
You know what song is amazing? Day of the Baphoments. That bass solo in the beginning? Damn. Juan Alderete is such an underrated bassist, mostly because no one knows who he is.
-
Listening to De-Loused really makes me appreciate how amazing Jon Theodore is. His drumming fits The Mars Volta perfectly. Not too crazy and not too generic. It's just perfect. No other word could describe it.
-

Best song on Amputechture IMO, though Tetragrammatron comes oh so close.
-
Definitely the best in my opinion. I can't get enough of that bass solo. I haven't really to Amputecture all that much though, so the results are a little skewed.
-

:rollin I could watch interviews of them all day, they are so awesome

:lol Omar and Cedric are awesome.
-
Although this was a week ago:
It took me awhile to get into anything beyond Teflon, but it was a pretty rewarding album (like all Volta albums) even if it's nowhere near my favorite.
This sums up my sentiment about Octahedron to a tee.
-
Can't spot through the lens
Bleeding through your sanctuary

Bleeding through your sanctuary
:heart
-
You really like that song. It's a good song, but it's not even close to being the best on Goliath. That being said... Wax Simulacra :heart
-
I think everything is just so perfect... each section is completely different but it comes together so well. And I love the spacey/noise sections. AND THE INTRO AFAEFAFAAEGFAF :heart :heart
But the other songs are all great too. Especially Metatron and Cavalettas.
-
Have you seen the video for it?
-
Have you seen the video for it?
Just watched it, that was awesome! :lol
-
Right? That was my first experience of The Mars Volta. I never looked back.
-
I think Ilyena might become my favorite Mars Volta song. Possibly one of my favorite songs as well. The song just blows me away every time I listen to it... it's perfect.
-
I would really like Jon Theodore returning to the band!He is currently one of my top 5 favourite drummers! He plays like a beast with great technique!
-
I don't see that happening anytime soon. They just got Deantoni Parks, and no offense to Jon Theodore, but he's a lot better in my opinion.
-
I just got the compilation album of Omar's solo stuff, and I just realized that a lot of the stuff he does, gets rewritten and rerecorded with The Mars Volta. For example, the song Rapid Fire Tollbooth is a slower, less complicated version of Goliath.
Also, I love Omar. :heart
-
I take back every bad thing I've ever said about Octahedron. It is a marvelous album.
-
:tup
That was the first album I heard from them, so it has a special place as my favorite from them.
-
The first few times I listened to it, it was just really boring, and I put it on the back burner. Then after not touching it for a while, I literally listened to Cotopaxi 20 times in a row (the song is just addicting), and decided to give it another chance. Then BAM!, it just clicked for me. I wouldn't put it above any of their other albums, but it's definitely much higher on my favorite albums of all time.
-
I've always found Octahedron to be one of the more deep TMV albums; most of the time they just melt your face off, but Octahedron has a bit more character, you really have to...listen to it I reckon. Its also melodically really catchy (Cotapaxi is a good example) - and I've always been a fan of With Twilight as my Guide for that reason ( I know many dont rate it).
Much maligned album, but I hope they go back to face-melting with their newie.
-
As do I. I love having my face melting, especially when it's from the Mars Volta
-
WHY ARE WE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE MARS VOLTA 24/7!?! C'MON MAN!
-
Listened to bedlam, it was really awesome, I'm not sure why most people seem to say only their first two albums are consistent as bedlam (on first listen) seemed to easily be at their level of quality.
-
So, this new album of theirs...
To be fair, though, I'm not really waiting around for it. I'm making an effort to hear their albums in order, and I still haven't heard Bedlam yet, so it's gonna be a while before I listen to it.
It's just it sounded like it was finished and about to come out, and then... something happened?
-
Omar is crazy. He records albums, and then finds something wrong with it, so he starts over. I love the man, but he's literally insane. And last time I checked it was coming out sometime in 2012.
-

bedlam is ridiculously good... might even dethrone de-loused for me. The atmosphere present through out that album is something i haven't heard ever before. it's on a completely new level
Also listening to Frances the Mute now, Miranda has such an incredible build up to a musical and physical orgasm.
-
I think Ilyena might become my favorite Mars Volta song. Possibly one of my favorite songs as well. The song just blows me away every time I listen to it... it's perfect.
It's super groovy.
-
bedlam is ridiculously good... might even dethrone de-loused for me.
Bedlam was my favorite for a long time, and then I listened to De-Loused a lot. I realized that in no way is Bedlam better than De-Loused. I can listen to Bedlam in chunks, but with De-Loused I just have to keep listening because it's just so good that I can't stop listening to it.
-
Yep, Deloused is the best.
-
De-Loused is so, so good!
-
Yep, Deloused is the best.
This is the correct answer. No other answer can be as correct as this.
-
De-Loused is really really good. It's still my favorite, but I dunno, something about Bedlam really draws me in.
DOSE TEXTURES
-
Frances is where it's at.
'It's' being my penis.
-
can we all just agree that the mars volta are sexy motherfuckers
-
I'd hit that.
-
I'd hit that.
-
I'd hit that.
-
This is the longest period of time between albums. I remember when Amputechture got announced, I was like "Wut? They just came out with Frances the Mute!"
-
I'm going to listen to every Volta album in chronological order tonight. One down, four to go. :metal
EDIT: What an experience. The Mars Volta are truly one of the greatest bands around today. Their music is just so unique. I FUCKING LOVE IT!!!!! :metal
-
Frances the Mute is the perfect album to start off the day.
-
TMV just needs to come out with the new album already! I'm getting unbearably antsy... It's been too long since I've had my fix of crazy-awesome prog drumming. It's like no matter who drums for these guys, it's amazing. France the Mute was my favorite for a long time, but being a fan of heavy stuff, Bedlam now reigns supreme. There are not enough bands around today like TMV.
-
If you like the drummers in The Mars Volta, prepare to have your mind blown this time around.
-

YES! I can't wait... I've seen some of Omar's solo stuff with Deantoni on it and it seriously blew my mind. The only release I own that has him on it, in part, is Omar's "Old Money". I'm so excited to see what he sounds like on an official TMV release.
-
I favorited all of the videos on YouTube of the performances that Omar did with Deantoni in LA and New York last year. It's some of the best music I've ever heard, and if the new record is even half as good as that stuff I'm gonna be a happy guy.

Yea man, all that stuff sounded great! I think they've got something awesome up their sleeves for this new one. I really dug some of those videos of the "new" TMV material they debuted recently. I think they might have been from gigs they did with Soundgarden this year. One of the songs was called "Trinkets Pale the Moon" if I remember correctly.
-
I was gonna watch some of those videos, but I decided to go into this album not knowing anything but the lineup. I don't want to have any expectations or anything like that, I just want to go in with a blank slate.
-

Yea man, that's definitely a good way to go. I watched them once just to get a vibe for what's coming... and the vibe was GOOD!
-
I saw TMV open up for Red Hot Chili Peppers awhile back and they were a crazy band! My favorite album is probably De-Loused. I liked the more chill out vibe they had on Octahedron too.
-
I didn't really care for Octahedron when I first listened to it, but after many, many more listens, I was able to see that it was a much better album than my first impression of it. I was used to the up tempo craziness of the first three albums, and just wanted more of that, but it's clear that Octahedron is none of that, but it's just a great album in it's own right.

That's awesome man, I bet that was sick show! I've only seen them once in 2008, with Pridgen on drums, and it was insane... the place got so hot though that they stopped early. Got to see a bunch of stuff from Bedlam live though! I love De-Loused as well, it was the first one that I got. I can't say I've heard a bad thing from them yet!

I was sort of the same way with Octahedron. I liked it straight away, but started liking it even more as time went on. I though it was really cool to hear them do something different from their usual. If I had to choose though, the crazy TMV albums would get my vote!
-
Bedlam is, and forever will be, my number one.
-
Bedlam is, and forever will be, my number one.
Same here man, the first time I put Bedlam on I immediately had a huge smile on my face. That's how I know an album is going to be good. The prog fan in me just loves Pridgen's crazy spastic drumming style. Also, the production on Bedlam has been my favorite of theirs... especially the drums.
-
Pridgen is a God. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent trying to learn his parts on that album with little to no success. He's all over the place, and I love every fucking second of it.
-

I know man, he's a freak of nature... I love how he makes it look completely effortless when he plays. It was a sad day when he left the band.
-
It was bittersweet for me. Pridgen is easily one of my favorite drummers, and I absolutely love what he did as a member, but Deantoni Parks is just on a completely different level. He's like the perfect mix of Pridgen and Theodore, and just tears apart the drum set.

Totally man... this new is probably going to be turning a lot of heads!
-
This record needs to come out sooner than later. I really want to be listening to new Volta right about now.

Wow, I didn't even know they had a twitter. I wonder when they are going to announce the album release date? I just need some type of information to keep me sane!

I saw something on Tumblr that said 3/27/12, but it wasn't from anything official, although it was in Spanish, so you never know.

Seeing as Cedric said that the album wasn't called In Absentia, and the post said that is what is was called, I'm going to assume that it wasn't legit. Also, my Spanish was good enough for me to figure it out.
-
I found the post you were talking about, you are correct. It's stating in Spanish that the album is called In Absentia which that other post from Cedric corrects.
-
There's been so much speculation about the new record in the past few days. I really want to get some official announcement beyond the song in MLB 12.
-
Absolutely, the time has come for some official news from the band about the new album!
-
I hope all this At The Drive-In stuff doesn't really effect the album release. I love At the Drive-In, but I've been waiting for this album patiently for so long. I really don't want any more set backs.
-
I think they'll release the album as soon as they can, but the tour might be postponed. At least I hope the album doesn't get delayed because I really wanna hear it too!
-
I'm totally for an ATDI reunion, as long as we get the same amount of Volta as usual!

Soooo stoked! Love the name of the album.
Wish it had a release date though. Any one have any ideas or guesses as to when its coming out? I would guess April.
-
On the Wikipedia page it says "The album is reported to be slated for release on March 27th," but that comes from the same post that Cedric said was wrong about the album's name, so I'm not really trusting it.
EDIT: Although, after some searching on the Volta Forums I found this: https://forum.thecomatorium.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=119902 (https://forum.thecomatorium.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=119902), which makes me super excited.

FINALLY!

OH MAN! I cannot wait for this one... I haven't been this excited about a rock-related release since the new Alice In Chains album!
-
That is a fucking sweet name.
First thing I thought when I saw it.
-
Fantastic album name.
-
Awesome name indeed.
-
The name is pretty meh, but has little bearing on anything in all reality.

The whole album is fantastic! It just drags a bit between songs.

Drags ALOT between songs, to the point of stupidity.
-
Do what I did and cut out some of the ambient stuff. It makes the album flow MUCH better.
-

:lol Yeah! I was being nice.
-
Do what I did and cut out some of the ambient stuff. It makes the album flow MUCH better.
This would probably be a good idea. It really does drag a good bit.
-
Which album?
-
Frances the Mute.
-
I understand the complaint about dragging between songs, though the songs themselves are incredible (it's probably in my top 5 favorite albums). I think the songs as they are are far too charming to cut, though. If you're in the mood for some ambient noise, the transition between L'Via and Miranda is nothing short of intense, and the transition between Miranda and Cassandra never ceases to surprise me.
-
Hm, I should go listen to the rest of their discography, I actually only own Octahedron, love the album.
-
WTF are you waiting for?!?!?!
-
Get their first one!!
-
Listening to on Spotify as we speak.

If you're in the mood for some ambient noise, the transition between L'Via and Miranda is nothing short of intense, and the transition between Miranda and Cassandra never ceases to surprise me.
In the version I've made, I haven't cut out the ambient noise completely, just trimmed it slightly. I do agree to a certain extent, though, that some of the transitions are excellent - I just think they are a little bit long (and uncecessary) in places, for my tastes at least.
For me, if an album's flow is perfect (or near perfect), it takes it to a much higher level overall.
-
I wouldn't cut the Coquí sounds from L'Via!
-
The three minutes of noise at the end of Cygnus is too much to handle.

If you like music, you need to listen to Frances the Mute. No excuses.
Might as well throw in a ranking:
1. Frances the Mute
2. Deloused in the Comatorium
3. Octahedron
4. The Bedlam in Goliath
5. Amputechture
-
The only time the ambiance in Frances bothers me is if I just want to listen to a song or two from the album. If I'm listening to the whole album, then the ambient sections add a lot imo.

I only really listen to Frances first thing in the morning, and all the way through, so the ambiance doesn't bother me.

YES! Somebody else that loves Bedlam! Mine is very similiar:
1. The Bedlam in Goliath
2. Frances the Mute
3. Deloused in the Comatorium
4. Amputecture
5. Octahedron
6. Tremulant (Yep, I'm gonna be that guy that adds in the EP) :)
They are all awesome though in my opinion!
-
1. The Bedlam in Goliath
2. De-Loused in the Comatorium
3. Frances the Mute
4. Octahedron
5. Amputechteure
This would be my ranking as well, although Deloused and Bedlam could switch around depending on my mood. Amputechture is still really good, but the "vibe" of that album never meshed with me as well as the other ones. Not sure why, I think it might be the production.
-
YES! Somebody else that loves Bedlam! Mine is very similiar:
Bedlam is the craziest album I've ever heard, and I fucking love every second of it. I feel like it get's a lot of hate, and I just don't understand.

I definitely agree about the whole not meshing thing. It's never really worked for me. Also, I hate to put Amputechture at the bottom because my favorite Volta song is on there (Day of the Baphomets), but like I said, the whole album overall just doesn't really do it for me.
-
I love Bedlam. Right now it's tied with Deloused as my favorite Volta record.
-
1. frances
2. amputechture
3. bedlam
4. deloused
5. 8
that's my opinion

Tremulant is probably the most solid thing they've released. So fucking good.

Deloused
Bedlam
Frances
Octahedron
Amputechture
Deloused is one of my favourite albums ever, Bedlam is so rocking and fun and batshit crazy and unique that I never get tired of it, Frances has some great moments (and I love Miranda), Octahedron has some great melodies and is a really great chill out album, and Amputechture is solid - if not spectacular.
-
Part of me would like to finally get up to date with this band before their new one comes out. That means getting both Bedlam and Octahedron. In the next two months. Doable.
-
notsureifserious.jpg
Completely fucking serious.
-
Tremulant EP is pretty awesome, although I wouldn't say it is their best release.
I love Eunuch Provocateur though :heart :heart
-
So I've been listening to Frances the Mute a lot lately because it always seems to be stuck in my head in the morning, and I just realized that L' Via l'Viaquez is one of the coolest songs that I've ever heard. The groove that Jon Theodore and Juan have going in that song is just so good. Plus all the Spanish that Cedric has going just adds to the awesomeness. And who could forget the amazingness of John Frusciante's solos? And of course Omar is just Omar throughout the entire thing, and the final guitar solo pretty much epitomizes the way he plays guitar. It's definitely my favorite track off of Frances.
-
Yeah L'Via L'Viaquez is definitely one of my favorite TMV songs.
-
I've no idea why I've never posted in this thread before... TMV are one of my all time favourite bands. In fact, I'm a little worried that this ATDI reunion is going to take the focus off of TMV's output... I really hope that isn't the case. :-\
Here are my rankings with favourite songs, for what they're worth:
Frances the Mute - Miranda That Ghost etc. (Only album where I like absolutely every song.)
Amputecture - Tetragrammaton
De-Loused - Cicatriz Esp.
Bedlam in Goliath - Agadez
Octahedron - With Twilight As My Guide
-
Favorite songs by album:
Tremulant: Eunuch Provocateur
De-Loused: This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed
Frances: Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore
Amputechture: Day of the Baphomets
Bedlam: Ilyena
Octahedron: With Twilight As My Guide
And least favorite:
Tremulant: I really can't pick, the two remaining songs are both really fucking awesome
De-Loused: Tira Me a las Arañas :D
Frances the Mute: The Widow
Amputechture: El Ciervo Vulnerado
Bedlam: Aberinkula
Octahedron: Luciforms
-
Limited input here since I'm not familiar with Amputechture or Bedlam:
Deloused - Roulette Dares
Frances the Mute - L'Via L'Viazquez
Octahedron - Halo of Nembutals
-
I love Bedlam. Right now it's tied with Deloused as my favorite Volta record.

The first time I put Bedlam in, I had a HUGE smile on my face! That's how I know an album is going to be killer. Pridgen's drumming and drum sound really did it for me.
-
Since we seem to be doing the favorite song thing...
De-Loused: Cicatriz ESP
Frances: L' Via l'Viaquez
Amputechture: Day of the Baphomets (Their best song IMO)
Bedlam: Goliath
Octahedron: Cotopaxi
I'm a little worried that this ATDI reunion is going to take the focus off of TMV's output... I really hope that isn't the case. :-\
I thought about this as well, but I really don't think it's going to effect TMV that much, but with Omar you can never be certain what's going to happen.
-

Frances: L' Via l'Viaquez
Amputechture: Day of the Baphomets (Their best song IMO)
Bedlam: Goliath
Octahedron: Cotopaxi
"Cotopaxi" is definitely my favorite from Octahedron as well. And "Day of the Baphomets"... epic percussion section!!! :lol
-
Deloused: Eria Tarka. What a beautiful song. Roulette Dares, Televators, and Son et Lumiere/Intertiatic ESP are also winners.
Frances: Extremely difficult, since I tend to look it more as one album than a collection of songs. I guess if I'm only going to listen to one song from the album, I'd pick L'Via or Cygnus, though if I'm listening to the entire album Cassandra Geminni is my favorite, if that makes any sense.
Amputechture: Day of the Baphomets. That instrumental section is just killer.
Bedlam: Goliath. NEVER HEARD A MAN SPEAK LIKE THIS MAN BEFORE
Octahedron: Since We've Been Wrong.
-
Deloused: Drunkship of Lanterns by a mile. I first heard this and Tira Me a Las Aranas or whatever it is as one track, so to me, they're the same song, which just makes it even better.
Frances: Cassandra Geminni is possibly my favourite prog epic ever, so that.
Amputechture: I'd probably say Asilos Magdalena, though the song on either side of it could also take it. That trio of tracks is just great, going from jazzy to Spanish acoustic to heavy funkiness.
-
Favorites:
DeLoused: Roulette Dares
Frances the Mute: Cassandra Gemini
Amputechture: Day of the Baphomets
Goliath: Goliath
Octahedron: Desperate Graves

Amputechture: El Ciervo...
Goliath: Wax Simulacra
Octahedron: With Twilight As My Guide

I haven't listened to Octahedron enough so I won't put that on the list but:

Frances: L'Via L'Viaquez
Amputechture: Day of the Baphomets
Bedlam: Goliath

-
YES! and 13 tracks? Sick. I can't wait for this to come out. March 27 can not come soon enough!
-
Not really a fan of the cover art (not as "out there" as the others) but bring on that album nonetheless. :metal
-
I'm glad they are changing the artwork up a bit. Wasn't a fan of Amputechture's album cover and although I've never really looked closely at Octahedron that one didn't seem very appealing either. Bedlam has an awesome cover that fits the feel of the album though!
I thought I read somewhere (maybe this thread?) that Volta wouldn't be going back to "old" Volta, so I wonder if this album will be very spacey and atmospheric like Octahedron... if so, it seems that type of music would fit the cover perfectly.

"7. IN ABSENTIA"

Love the song titles, and the album artwork looks spacey. If it's more like Octahedron I'll be a happy man, although I love all of their work anyways. Octahedron is always a great listen.
-
I really hope it's not like Octahedron. I don't want it to be as crazy as Bedlam either, but somewhere in the middle would be nice.
-
Either direction would be fine with me. The crazy TMV is the one I fell in love with, but I do also appreciate the more mature direction they took with Octahedron. I'm just excited to finally have more than 6 hours of Volta on my computer.
-
According to an article on RollingStone's website the new album is going to be telling the story of a character inspired by Superman villain Solomon Grundy and the Greek myth of Hyacinthus.

:lol at that picture of Cedric
I don't really care what the album sounds like, Volta has not disappointed me yet.
-
wikipedia quoted an interview which Cedric said the new album sounded like "future punk"
-
Yeah, they said a long time ago (so it may not be relevant anymore but it still might be) that the album would be an almost complete departure from their old sound. Fairly straight-forward and punkish and stuff.
Also, I have Bedlam and Octahedron. Shall I listen to both in a row? :millahhhh
-
Is that even a question?
-
After hating it for so long, I'm really into Octahedron at the moment. For the past few days I've woken up with either Teflon or Desperate Graves stuck in my head. I'm really glad I didn't just write it off because it has some spectacular moments going on.
-
It's a beautiful album. So, so underrated.
-
Octahedron is awesome and I won't understand the hate for it. I finally bought it a few weeks ago after only hearing select tracks from a friend (who also hated it) and it has been getting plays everyday. Sure, it is kind of like "Volta Lite", but that isn't a bad thing. The rhythms are there, the melodies are there, it is just pulled back a little bit and everything has a bit more room to breathe.
The only song that hasn't clicked with me yet is the last track. The last song on volta albums ALWAYS take me awhile to appreciate though, I think it is just because I usually arrive at the end of the album with my mind blown. :lol
-
I'm probably about five or six listens into Goliath now. This is just as good as their first three. If you asked me to rank those first four albums, I don't think I could do it at all. My default answer would be Frances, because that was my first album of theirs and traditionally my favourite, but in reality, I probably like all four albums about the same. Insane consistency.
Octahedron's still only gotten two listens. I figure I'll focus on it once Bedlam takes its course. It doesn't sound terrible, but it does sound inferior to the others. Who knows, maybe it'll pick up.
-
LET'S DO SOME MORE RANKING!
Teflon
Cotopaxi

A very consistent album, now that I look at it song-by-song. Some of the vocals are just haunting and the melodies are even better than usual, on the whole. I feel like every single song could have been the single with a bit of editing. However, the highs don't reach as high as they do on Comatorium, Frances, or Goliath.
-
Cedric just replied to one of my tweets. It's almost like we're best friends.

HHHNNNNGGGGGGHHHHHH, February 14th come faster!
-
Not too keen on the new clip.
-
It's definitely interesting, but I feel like it's just lacking something. It is only a 30 second clip from a 5 minute song from a 65 minute album, so I'm not discouraged.
-
Not a big sample fan, so I'm not even gonna bother listening to it
-

I definitely recommend doing so. Just wait the five days and hear the whole thing.
-
That's probably one of the angriest sounding vocals I've ever heard from Cedric and I like it. ;D
Can't wait to hear the whole thing.
-
The clip didn't really grab me, but I'll withhold judgment until the full album is out.

Actually, no. I've always been aware of their existance but never been inclined to really listen to 'em. Figured I was getting all I needed out of TMV.

Relationship of Command, I think, is hands down their best.

Octahedron and De-loused in a Comatorium are my two most favorite albums of theirs.

I found used copies of De-Loused In The Comatorium and Amputechture on Thursday. Holy shit, De-Loused is awesome. I feel like my ears just got their asses kicked.

This is so weird, but I like it. A lot.
-
I've listened to it twice. Definitely not what I was expecting. I was expecting this tune to come out and immediately kick my ass, and it didn't do that, but there's something interesting happening here.
I don't care for the mix at all, but I'll wait until I get my hands on the physical copy before I pass judgment.
-
I really have to say, I was a little disappointed by the snippet, but after listening to the whole song I can say that I really enjoy it.
-
Well... that made for confusing listening. Really not sure what I think of it yet. Might have to wait until I have the rest of the album as context.
-
OK that was pretty good.
-
This song sounds very uninteresting to me. I thought it was going to get better after the second verse/chorus, but it didn't, because more plodding verses came in. The last 30 seconds or so were ok with the addition of some horns (sounds like it), but it was still that same chorus....
For the first time ever, I will not blindly purchase a new TMV album. Maybe I'll try before I buy.

I really liked the new song. Plus it makes me confident that they aren't just doing a Volta-by-numbers thing. I'm looking forward to it.
-
Don't get me wrong, I like that they're not repeating themselves, but I don't like the direction
-
I really liked the new song. Plus it makes me confident that they aren't just doing a Volta-by-numbers thing. I'm looking forward to it.
I agree! Omar has so much solo stuff that sounds similar to Volta material, so I'm really interested is this new direction. If it turns out to be not-so-good, there's always more Omar albums to check out!
-
The new song is pretty interesting. It's not really that amazing but it's at least comforting to know the album should be something unique.
-
The thing that I'm most looking forward to is the drum tracks. Deantoni is such a genius, and while on first listen I didn't really get what was going on by the sixth or seventh listen my mind was blown. I can't wait to see what's in store.
-
Been listening to all Mars Volta albums lately. Started with De Loused and Frances, now Octahedron and Bedlam. (Still having difficulties with Ampu, but I'll manage that as well soon, I reckon)
-
Amputecture is the hardest album to get through for me. Even the fact that it has their best song (Day of the Baphomets) in my opinion. There's just too much that doesn't really appeal to me.
Also, I think Teflon might be rivaling Day of the Baphomets as my favorite Volta song. It's just so damn good.
-
I found used copies of De-Loused In The Comatorium and Amputechture on Thursday. Holy shit, De-Loused is awesome. I feel like my ears just got their asses kicked.
And now I've gotten through Amputechture, and I must agree with PuffyPat on this. While De-Loused was amazing, this is... eh. A lot of the songs are either very boring or very hard to get into. This may be my least favorite Volta album now that I've heard. it. But lord, "Day Of the Baphomets" kicks serious ass. I've had it stuck in my head for days.
All I need to hear now is The Bedlam In Goliath and Noctourniquet.
-
Hoping to hear some more samples from Noctourniquet soon. The first single didn't impress me at all but I'm willing to bet it's the worst song on the album.
-

Yeah, Amputechture is probably the worst Volta album. A couple of the songs are winners - Tetragrammation, Meccamputechture, Asilos Magdalena, Day of the Baphomets - but there's a considerable amount of filler as well. Bedlam, however? It may be a bit more difficult to get into than De-loused or Frances, but there's some incredible material there as well.
-
Man, Amputechture is awesome, you guys are crazy. It has Tetragrammatron, Vermicide, Viscera Eyes, Day of the Baphomets... hell, the whole middle part of the album is awesome. The bookends are kinda meh, but the rest is gold, gold Jerry, gold!
Bedlam and Octahedron (to a lesser extent) feel more fillery to me, but what do I know, Frances and Amputechture are my favorite albums. :)
-

Well, my biggest "problem" with Amputechture is its length. But that's my problem with most TMV albums actually. I'll try again today. Normally you have a great taste in music The King in Crimson, so I'll trust you on this one as well.

I think the big reason that it's hard for me to get through this album is the fact that the first track is just meh. I had been used to getting my ass kicked by the first track that I was just a bit let down when I first listened to it, and the fact that it really slows down in the middle with Asilos Magdalena didn't help too much either. Plus I was never really into Tetragrammatron like everyone else seems to be.
Might as well rank this shit.
1. Day of the Baphomets
2. Visera Eyes
3. Vermicide
4. Meccamputechture
5. Tetragrammatron
6. Asilos Magdalena
7. Vicarious Atonement
8. El Ciervo Vulnerado
-
I keep meaning to listen to the other albums but fuck, De-loused In A Comatorium and Octahedron keep stealing my attention.
-
Don't fret, after a few listens I still don't like Tetragrammatron. That song is waaaay longer than it needs to be, and none of it is really all that memorable. And El Ciervo Vulnerado is such a terrible closer after Day Of the Baphomets. But the middle of the album is alright. But after what I'd heard from the band beforehand, it's a massive let down.
Though I'm a bit weird, I only like the first half of Octahedron, and everyone seems to love the second half of it way more than the first.
-
Say what you want about Tetragrammation, but the riff from 0:00 to 1:10 is nothing short of brutal. One of my favorite moments on the album.

If it makes any difference, try skipping either the first or the last track (or both). Even though I love the album, I usually skip those two. Just not up to par with the rest of the songs.
My ranking:
Day of the Baphomets
Viscera Eyes
Tetragrammatron
Vermicide
Asilos Magdalena
Meccamputechture
Vicarious Atonement
El Ciervo Vulnerado

Though I'm a bit weird, I only like the first half of Octahedron, and everyone seems to love the second half of it way more than the first.
I can see what you mean with the first half thing (Teflon would be my favorite Volta song if Day of the Baphomets wasn't so damn good), but I feel like it drags a little between Teflon and Cotopaxi.
-
Teflon is damn awesome, but I think either "Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus" or "Goliath" is my favorite Volta song. Or almost anything on De-Loused. :lol Its close though!
-
Teflon or Inertiatic ESP are my favorite.

It took a while for With Twilight As My Guide to grow on me. I hated it at first. I like it now, though I still think it's a bit too long. Halo Of Nembutals, though, I always loved. It's one of those ticks where, if I listen to Teflon, I have to listen to Halo Of Nembutals because I love those two together so much.
-
I just completely love De-loused In A Comatorium and Octahedron, I listen to them every other day it seems.
-
Goliath's name fits the song perfectly. I don't know why, but that main riff ("never heard a man speak") is just...... FUCKING GOLIATH! :metal :metal :metal :metal
My top 10 Volta songs (NO ORDER):
1. Frances the Mute
2. Ilyena

The top three are my actual top three, other than that it's just what I would consider in my top ten.
1. Day of the Baphomets
2. Teflon
3. Goliath (For me this includes Tourniquet Man)
4. Cicatriz ESP
5. Frances the Mute
6. Soothsayer
7. L'Via l'Viaquez
8. Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus
9. Wax Simulacra
10. Cotopaxi
-
Album is pretty good. Picks up after the first song with one of the best songs they've written in a long time.
-
^ Pirate or promo-copy-listener?
-
Listening to the album now.
-
^ Pirate or promo-copy-listener?
Not a promo, for sure, haha.
-
I want it. I WANT IT NOW!
-
What a great idea on a Friday afternoon at work:
1. Cicatriz ESP
2. Goliath
3. Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt
4. Luciforms
5. Inertiatic ESP
6. Drunkship of Lanterns
7. L'Via L'Viaquez
8. Miranda et al (come at me)
9. Cotopaxi
10. Day of the Baphomets
That's a pretty brilliant list of tracks...
-
I don't know about you, but I can't listen to Inertiatic ESP without Son et Lumiere.
-
Mmm, I don't know about that. It certainly adds to it, but I don't consider them two parts of a whole.
-
It's probably because I usually listen to De-Loused all the way through, so I just feel like something is missing when Inertiatic just starts.
-
That'd do it :tup
I'm a playlist kinda guy. I listen to albums as a piece on those relatively rare occassions when I can be left alone for more than an hour at a time.
-
I never said how awesome of a playlist that is. Sounds like it'll be a good day at work.
-
Noctourniquet is a damn good album. I enjoyed it a lot.
-
I never said how awesome of a playlist that is. Sounds like it'll be a good day at work.
Holy hell, add Son et Lumiere to it and yeah that'd be an awesome playlist.
BTW, I'm finishing work (other side of the world...)
-
OH SHIT. WE'RE TIME TRAVELING!!!!!
-
Mmm, I don't know about that. It certainly adds to it, but I don't consider them two parts of a whole.
they are, though — the only reason "Son et Lumiere" and "Tira Me a las Arañas" are split from "Inertiatic" and "Drunkship" is because the label wanted the usual 10+ track album. same reason they split "Cassandra Gemini" on Frances, though that one was more specifically because the label was trying to pay them for an EP because the album would've been 5 tracks!
-
Thats pretty cool trivia.
I still don't see it, though. When I listen I always feel like its a seperate track, with the Son et Lumiere bit tacked on to soften the start of the album a bit/act as a "starter" for the album ala Regression in Scenes or Prolouge on My Arms, Your Hearse.
-
I don't know about you, but I can't listen to Inertiatic ESP without Son et Lumiere.
I actually ripped them as one song in iTunes. ;D But I tend to do that a lot when it comes to short, "intro" tracks.
-
I don't know about you, but I can't listen to Inertiatic ESP without Son et Lumiere.
I'm the same way... for me they seem clearly meant to be together.

Tetragrammatron
Televators

I didn't feel that a lot of Noctourniquet was too memorable. A lot of it seemed to meander a lot without really going anywhere. I'll need to give it more listens, but that's my first impression. The overall idea was really cool, just fumbled a little bit in the execution. "The Malkin Jewel," "The Whip Hand," "Vedamalady," and "Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sounds" are my favorites so far.
-
Aegis is the best.
-
Still trying to figure the album out myself. TMV usually requires a few listens to really open up, but this one seems a little, I dunno, off. I can see it, regardless, sitting at the bottom of my TMV list. Just doesn't have the OOMPH even Octahedron had.
-
Between the single and what you guys and other people on other forums are saying, this sounds like a hellluva disappointing album; even more than Octahedron. Not excited :(
-
wtf the single is pretty good
-
wtf the single is pretty good
I wouldn't say that, it's not one of my favorite from the albums.
But I don't find the album disappointing at all! It's just... well, weirder than anything they've done before (IMO).
-
i like the weirds though
-
i like the weirds though
this. I've only heard the single so far, but I say the weirder the better! Really loved how different the Jewel was from everything else I've heard by them.
-
So I watched a concert from 2010, and I have to say that my favorite part was the Broken English Jam. That song fucking kills. It's got a sick groove, and I just can't stop listening to it. Anyone else really into this song?
-
Is everyone too scared to talk about how awesome Nocturniquet is or something?
Some of us are waiting for release like good boys.
-
-
Only heard The Malkin Jewel and Aegis so far (couldn't resist sneaking myself a peek, but that's my lot now.) TMJ has definitely improved since the first couple of listens but I still can't put my finger on why it just isn't the same. Might be something to do with the unusual mix or... I don't know. It's not *bad*, it's just not all there.
Aegis.... when I was listening to the live versions of this song it had the energy and vibe reminiscant of Intertiatic ESP from De-Loused. In the studio it's certainly a little bit different than that and it adopts it's own vibe. I can't help but wish they'd used the harmony employed on the final chorus for all of the choruses throughout. Like it more than TMJ, though.
All in all I'm still insanely looking forward to this release, but I am a little more nervous than before.
-
From what I'm hearing I feel like it's going to have the same effect as Octahedron: at first I didn't really care for it, but after giving it some time I've grown to love many of the songs on it. I can definitely see Noctourniquet doing the same thing. Not every album can make me fall in love with it immediately like De-Loused or Bedlam.
I can confidently say that I am looking forward to this as more than most of the records coming out this year.
-
Is everyone too scared to talk about how awesome Nocturniquet is or something?
Some of us are waiting for release like good boys.
-
For the other good boys: Zed and Two Naughts is available for streaming on TMV's Facebook page. Also, if you pre-order or have preordered Noctourniquet you'll be able to download Z&2N in addition to Jewel.
-
Listening to the other single right now and WTF THIS IS GREAT
-
I am now so pumped for this record.
-
Zed and Two Naughts is a lot better than the first single! Sounds like this will be a better record than the last one, but I'm not sure it will beat any of their first 4 albums. We'll see come release date.
-
Am I the only one who thought that Ceddy's vocals was reminiscent of Frances the Mute?
-
Molochwalker should have been a single.
-
My favorite TMV albums:
1. Deloused In The Comatorium
2. Frances The Mute
3. Amputechture
4. Bedlam In Goliath
5. Octahedron
I hope Noctourniquet breaks the above pattern.
-
I've waited patiently and it finally paid off. This is going to be mine. (https://hellomerch.com/sh/index.php?page=shop.product_details&product_id=3059&flypage=flypage.tpl&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=2)
-
I don't even care about vinyl but I still want that.
-
I collect colored vinyl mostly, and the fact that my favorite band is releasing an album on super sick colored vinyl makes me so damn happy. I'll have to wait til like June to get it, but I don't give a shit. This thing is gonna be so awesome.
-
Ordered mine this morning. Pretty good price for everything you get! Bummer about it not being released until 2 months after release date though, I was thinking about saving my first listen for this album for the vinyl...
-
Yeah, that's not gonna happen. No way I'm waiting an extra two months.
-

Of cavernous peeeeeeopllllllllllle
-
After the first play through I can say that I like the album, but I think it's going to take a few more listens before I can really give a proper response.
-
Thoughts:
The Whip Hand: Kind of an unusual track. I really liked the synth/dubstep thing going on in the background here, but the melody seemed kind of aimless, which is a problem I've been having with recent Volta. Didn't really like it this time around, but that might change with more listens.
Aegis: Now this is what I'm talking about. Good track, good groove; the ambient rock style is something TMV does particularly well. The chorus and outro are my favorite moments here.
Dyslexicon: ... What? This is unlike anything I've ever heard. I really like it, though. My favorite of the first three tracks, definitely. The drums really stand out here. This is the kind of track I was looking forward to hearing when I heard the new album was coming out. This is the kind of mania that was sadly absent on Octahedron (which is a fine album, but I want more classic, brain-exploding Volta).
Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sound: We've got another insanely cool ambient groove. Sort of has an Eria Tarka thing going on in the verses, and I absolutely love that track. We've got another melody problem, though; the melody, particularly in the chorus, doesn't really go anywhere. It's a darn shame. Cool lyrics though, and I rather like the bridge.
The Malkin Jewel: Ah, this one again. I like Malkin, and it was a good choice for the single. The outro is particularly spacey and cool. CLICKETY CLACK
Lapochka: Yuck. This song did nothing for me whatsoever. Positively boring. I'll give it another couple listens, but I'd be surprised if I ever really started digging this one.
In Absentia: So we've got a song divided into two distinct parts, neither of which did much for me this time around. The intro, I felt, was overly long, and the climax was unsatisfying. I feel like I just don't get this one yet. In time, I will learn to love you, In Absentia.
Imago: A rather cool track, I suppose, but it doesn't reach the highs of a few others I've heard yet.
Molochwalker: Pretty cool, as TMV rockers go. I prefer the chorus.
Trinkets Pale of Moon: I'd heard the live version of this already, and wasn't particularly excited by it. I thought hearing the studio version might fix this, but that doesn't seem to be the case right now. Musically, this piece is uninteresting, and the melody, once again, is rather lame.
Vedemalady: What a cool track! The groove during the chorus is sweet and savory, and the harmonies during the bridge are perfect. An early favorite.
Noctourniquet: I expect a lot from a title track, and this one didn't do anything for me.
Zed and Two Naughts: We round out the album with a familiar track. I really like this tune, though I feel like it could have gone on a bit longer.
All in all, it's okay. It definitely did not live up to my expectations. TMV have taken a step away from proggy craziness here and are looking to make easily digestible songs. Unfortunately, this is not something that they have ever done well. I talk a lot about melody here, and maybe that's wrong of me, but, across the board, the melodies are really weak and aimless, and it's impossible for me to enjoy songs when I can't grasp the musical idea at hand. I'll definitely give it another listen later, and who knows, maybe all it needs is time. I was lukewarm on Bedlam before falling in love with it too. From my very first listen, Noctourniquet gets 7/10.
-
I liked Noctourniquet on my first listen, liked it even more on my second, and fell in love with it on my third. Give it time. This album kicks ass.
Dyslexicon is the only bad song, in my opinion. In Absentia is difficult for me to talk about. I've listened to this album 8 or 9 times so far, and I still can't tell you what's going on in that song. Either my mind wanders, or the music is incoherent....I don't know.
The other 11 songs are all excellent. Even though I like The Whip Hand, I don't think it works well as an opener. Still a good song though.
Empty Vessels and Molochwalker are my favorites on the album.

Very interesting interview/article with Omar. (https://www.laweekly.com/2012-03-22/music/Mars-Volta-At-the-Drive-In-Omar-Rodriguez-Lopez/) I love this guy so much, even if he is a 'dictator.' He knows how to make some pretty damn good music.
-
I'm glad this'll be the last dictatorial album from TMV -- the last few albums haven't been nearly as good as Deloused or Frances, and I think some new creative blood will allow them to reach those highs again.
-
My local record store put this one out early. Bought it and giving a listen to it right now! :metal
-
My local record store put this one out early. Bought it and giving a listen to it right now! :metal
Same here. I'll be picking up my copy tonight.
-
I'm confused, is the first track supposed to sound like a CD skipping like crazy?
-
uhm
I don't think so. Are you referring to the synths in the chorus?
-
The whole album sounds like a CD skipping, on acid.
-
Nah I think the version on Spotify is fucked that's all. On further inspection it just cuts to the second track after like 30 seconds.
-
Album sounds fine to me, but I bought my copy.
-
Yeah it was the Spotify version for some reason.
So I just had my first listen; sounds pretty tasty, but I need it to sink in first. High hopes!
-
Lapochka is probably my favorite right now.
Though I can't get that "I am a mountain... of cavernous people" chorus from the other song out of my head. This album is... different. But I like it. Need to give it another spin soon.
-
COS IM A LAAAAAAAAAAAND MIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE
-
Finally ordered it. Should have it in the next few days.
-
Definitely better than Octahedron. The flow seems to get lost somewhere in the last quarter of the album, though saved by the last track. Only listened 3 times though.
-
First listen and I'd say it's probably my least favorite TMV album so far. Hopefully it will grow on me in subsequent listens. Too many slower songs.
-
Really cool interview with Juan. (https://www.notreble.com/buzz/2012/03/29/bassist-redefined-an-interview-with-juan-alderete/) Every time I read an interview with this guy I appreciate him even more. Such an underrated part of TMV.
-
Two listens in and I have some very early, probably unformed thoughts:
Imago and Vedamalady are two of the best 'softer' songs TMV have done.
Noctourniquet (the track) could have been amazing but Deantoni's drums were FAR too busy for no apparent reason.
Molochwalker would have been one of the best tracks on Octahedron if it had been released as planned.
I generally like the album... it starts off a little shaky but picks up a lot of steam around the middle.
That's all I got for now.
-
FINALLY came in the mail today; can't wait for this record to just take over my life.
-
I snagged the promo copy that came to my school's radio station ;D
-
Lucky bastard. I should probably look into my schools radio station to see what they might just have sitting around...
-
My school's radio station is 100% student brought in, we have to bring our music essentially.
-
The whole reason I joined was to just take all of the music. :lol Everything is done on the computer anyways, so once the CD is ripped it sits on a shelf and is never used again. Most of them end up being given away after a couple years, so I've take probably 40 CDs total.
-
I really, really like The Whip Hand. So far I think it's my favorite on the record.
-
I really, really like The Whip Hand. So far I think it's my favorite on the record.
Same here. Best song on the album, by far. Still a good album though.
-
Listening to this album for the first time now.
This album is unreal. Five tracks in and not a weak second. It's very different to their earlier stuff, but in a really great way. No idea why practically everyone's so lukewarm.
-

thisthisthis, I may be the only one, but this is my favorite yet!
-
Only song I wasn't too fussed on on first listen was Lapochka.
On first listen, I was trying to work out who The Malkin Jewel reminded me of, and I think it might be The White Stripes. Or maybe Animal Collective. Or maybe Captain Beefheart. Or all of them at the same time.
-
The Broken English Jam (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2R75iD5uLo&list=FL6VD1nzcX9PBp_Dui6HHizg&index=1&feature=plpp_video)
:heart :heart :heart
-
I love Lapochka, but I seem to be one of the few. The drumming in that track is absolutely insane, and the chorus is great too.
-
I'm slowly warming up to this, though I still have to resist the urge to hit next when In Absentia comes up. Empty Vessels is probably my favorite so far, but this one is gonna require a lot of listens...
Anyone else finding the sound of the album to be, well, really shitty?
-
Track-by-track interview. Turns out it's a concept album about a kid with a difficult home life. Who knew? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7hjsPwbMAPk
-
Okay, so, at first, I thought "The Whip Hand" was a terrible track and an awful opener for the album.
Now? I can't get enough of it. Those synths are so damn awesome.
I hope the rest of the album follows those footsteps.
-
The Whip Hand is my favorite track on the record. Loved it from the get go.
-

Agreed. Dat synth in the chorus gives me hardcore chills.
-
I would like to formally apologize to Octahedron for talking about how bad it was before really giving it a chance. After listening to it extensively over the past few months due to not really being that into Noctourniquet, I can honestly say that it's grown on me, a lot.
-

It's funny that you were so psyched for Notourniquet and I wasn't; yet I really enjoy it, and you don't.
-
Me and Mars Volta albums are really weird. It takes a really long time for them to reach a point where I can tell if I really like them or not, and my initial opinion usually changes. The only exception being De-Loused (I've loved that album from the get go). I really loved Amputechture and Frances the Mute on first listen, but now I really don't listen to them all to often, and the exact opposite can be said for Bedlam and Octahedron. I really didn't like them except for a song or two, and now I would rank them 1 and 3 respectively, and they make up a majority of my Volta listening. I'm sure as the months go by though, my opinion on Noctourniquet will change as I listen to it more just like all of their other records.
-
Yea, Mars Volta albums take some time to appreciate.
I can say, though, that the first 4 albums usually had enough raw energy and power on the outside to bring me back every time, so I always got excited about it. Then over time, the beauty and genius of the music would reveal itself.
Since Octehedron, there is no skin-deep energy and the newer albums need more time to appreciate; the band is not barraging you with riffs and soaring vocals. And now with the electronic element, I have had to accept this new direction the band is going in. Had I not heard Octehedron before Noctouriquet, I may have been disappointed when the new album came out.
-
I think the reason that Noctourniquet hasn't quite clicked with me yet, is becasue it came out right when Octahedron had just started hitting on all cylinders for me, and I've just been kicking myself for writing it off before even giving it a chance. So instead of listening to the new record, I've been spinning Octahedron instead. I guess I'm just an album behind everybody else, and I'm completely fine with that.
-
Hey, whatever it takes :tup
-
Another interview with Omar; (https://www.australianguitarmag.com.au/2012/05/the-spider-from-mars/) I really love this dude.
-
The riff in Molochwalker is too fucking good, and the solo sounds like something that should have been on Goliath. Overall this song is what is keeping me interested in Noctourniquet.
-
Yep. Second best song on Noctourniquet.
-
I would have to put it at number one for me. It just does something for me that no other song on the record does.
-
Really cool interview/story about Omar. (https://omarrodriguezlopez.tumblr.com/post/27923902148/alarm-magazine-omar-rodriguez-lopez-cover-story) Definitely worth a read.
-
Still thrashing both Bedlam (which I bought in February) and Noctourniquet (which I bought when it came out, ish).
I've found that generally, once they reach a point, I rarely listen to TMV albums anymore, in comparison to other favourite bands of mine. On the other hand, their albums' honeymoon periods tend to last longer than most other bands.
-
I find the exact opposite. I don't listen to Volta albums very much in the beginning, but afterwards I find myself listening to them far more often than any other band. Take Octahedron for example: I barely listened to it before 2012, and in the past 6 months I've got about 250 plays from it.
-
Depends on the album.
I don't spin Noct, Octa or Bedlam much, but Frances and DeLoused get regular listens. Frances especially.
-
I tend to listen to them all evenly. Even Amputechture gets some plays, although it's mostly just Day of the Baphomets.
-
I get into periods where all I want to do is listen to The Mars Volta. I think one of those periods is starting now. Playing Nocturniquet and its very enjoyable so far.
EDIT: I forgot how groovy and awesome Bedlam can be.
-
I've always found Bedlam to be a really fun listen - I like to listen to it playing sport, excercising, driving and even cleaning the house. By contrast, I find it quite...tedious (but not because its bad) to sit down and listen to.
-
Happy birthday to the fearless leader, Omar Rodríguez-López!
-
I have Octahedron and Noctourniquet. I haven't really listened to much of them... and I can't really get into them. I'd like to.. but. I dunno. What's a good place to start?
-
Neither of those are very good starting points at all. ;) I started with Amputechture and it worked great for me, though the best starting point might be Deloused..
-
Start with Deloused or Frances.
-
Deloused is their best so start with that.
So after a few months I've decided that Nocturniquet is their second-best album. Its an especially special album and I love it to death.
-
For anyone interested, Omar just released three new albums. They are all really weird, but there is some really cool stuff on them as well.
Unicorn Skeleton Mask (https://omarrodriguezlopez.bandcamp.com/album/unicorn-skeleton-mask)
Equinox (https://omarrodriguezlopez.bandcamp.com/album/equinox)
Woman Gives Birth to Tomato (https://omarrodriguezlopez.bandcamp.com/album/woman-gives-birth-to-tomato)

No shit! :lol
-
Has anyone reported on DTF that The Mars Volta broke up?
or hiatus.... I forgot which...
-
Pretty sure they're just on hiatus for a while. Cedric's working on his solo record, and Omar's got his new band Bosnian Rainbows, but I'm pretty sure that they're gonna resume making music at some point.
-
Awwwww. I was hoping they'd come around and tour here so I can see the Nocturniquet stuff.
-

Speaking of Ceddy, what's the latest on his solo album? I haven't heard anything for absolutely AGES! Nothing new on wiki and his Twitter account is both infuriating and useless. I'm really excited about the prospect of a Cedric solo album but it seems like he's totally forgotten about it. :lol
-
How is Octahedron considered one of their weaker albums? It's so beautiful!
-
Most Volta fans want crazy arrangements and whatnot, and Octahedron is pretty straightforward compared to their other records. It's just not "Volta-y" enough for them.
-
Well, according to a bunch of tweets from Cedric in the last hour or so, the Mars Volta is no longer together.
-
Well, according to a bunch of tweets from Cedric in the last hour or so, the Mars Volta is no longer together.
That blows :sadpanda:
-
He sounds like he's in hysterics about this.
-
Such a shame. Reading over his tweets I'm not really sure how to feel - on one hand, it seems like he's trying to demonize Omar; but on the other, I appreciate how straightforward he is. Very sad situation either way. But Omar and Cedric have never gotten along famously, so it's not surprising. I wouldn't rule out a future reunion though.
-
He sounds like he's in hysterics about this.
I can tell you that I'm in hysterics about this.
-
Stop... no... you're lying, stop.
-
A compilation of Cedric's tweets into one statement:
Thank you to all Volta fans you deserved more, especially after the way you rooted for us on this album. I tried my hardest to keep it going, but Bosnian Rainbows was what we all got instead. I can't sit here and pretend anymore. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta. I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of. We could never had done it without you. My dream was to get us to the point where Jon and Ikey came back but sadly it's over. Thank you a million times over for ever giving a fuck about our band. For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going for 'Noctourniquet' but Omar did not want to. I guess a break from Mars Volta means starting another band and ignoring all the support the fans gave us. I tried my hardest, guys. All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that Volta ever happened at all. God Damn we had a blast! Thank you again. I just feel really guilty for not even really saying the truth because a hiatus is just an insult to the fans. To all our fans all over the world: thank you for giving a fuck. You all ruled! I don't think I'll ever hear a fist full of dollars the same. My record will see the light of day soon and I'm excited because it sounds nothing like my previous endeavors. I'm not joking about any of this, I owe it to you guys (all fans) to be serious about this. Thank you to all past members who helped Volta along, as well. We blasted through like a comet and left our mark! If you ever see me in person and want to know why I'll tell you my side of the story. Finally, Please just be happy that it happened at all, remember all the opposition we were met with for just starting a new band back in 2001.
-
Well, it sucks, but at least the last album was a good one to go out on. :-\
-
Latest tweet:
What am I suppose to do be some progressive house wife that's cool with watching their partner go fuck other bands? We owe it 2 fans to tour
Damn...
-
Oh man... :'(
R.I.P. a great band.
-
Well, fuck.
-
Well that sucks. :(
-
https://www.progrockmag.com/news/the-mars-volta-split-in-anger/
Yeah, well, shit.
-
Dammit. I really wanted to see them live on this tour. Nocturniquet was too great to let it go without one.
Oh well. At least Juan Alderete and Deantoni Parks can collaborate with Kimbra like they wanted to. That'd be cool.
-
Worst musical news this month. Worst musical news I've heard in a long time.
Shit!
-
Can’t say I’m upset about this. TMV quickly became my favorite band after Deloused and Francis, but it’s been ups and downs since Amputecture. The last album was unlistenable.
-
The Mars Volta 'Split in anger'
The Mars Volta singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala says the band have split after guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez refused to take part in a US tour.
Zavala blamed the move on Lopez’ interest in his new band, Bosnian Rainbows. In a furious tweet the vocalist demanded: “What am I supposed to be, some progressive housewife that’s cool with watching their partner go fuck other bands?”
The duo formed The Mars Volta in 2001 after previous outfit At The Drive-In collapsed. They won a Grammy in 2009. Last year they said they’d gone on hiatus while Lopez concentrated on his new project.
But Zavala has claimed that was never really the case. In a series of tweets he said last night: “I guess a break from Mars Volta means starting another band and ignoring all the support the fans gave us.
“I can’t sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta. Sadly it’s over.”
Thanking fans for their support he continued: “For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going but Omar did not want to.
“I just feel really guilty for not even really saying the truth because ‘a hiatus’ is just an insult to the fans. All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that Mars Volta ever happened at all. God damn we had a blast.”
Zavala is working on a solo album while Bosnian Rainbows will release their debut album this year and tour the US next month.

Can’t say I’m upset about this. TMV quickly became my favorite band after Deloused and Francis, but it’s been ups and downs since Amputecture. The last album was unlistenable.
I never got the praise for the last album that I read online, especially around these parts. I thought it was boring as fuck myself after a few listens, and it's kind of obvious now that Omar just plain didn't want to be there anymore. Their first two are brilliant, but they've been hit or miss ever since, and missed big time on the last one. Better they split than water down their legacy any further.

Quote of the year, as far as I'm concerned... :hat

Wife analogies! Yes!
At least it is better than MP with DT, which was like: “I have been out fucking all these other bands—am I supposed to be happy seeing some other dude fucking my wife in the house I built!?”

Agreed completely. I was absolutely baffled with the praise I saw for the last album. Even my fiancé, is who generally extremely open-minded musically, looked over at me with a “WTF are you listening to look?” when I last started playing it.
-
R.I.P. Mars Volta, you'll be missed. :-[

Same here. I also was big on De-Loused and Frances, but nothing they had done since did much for me, outside of a few songs here and there. They were pretty much off of my radar in recent years.
-
Had this happened two years ago it would've been no biggie. But I really like Nocturniquet and think its the only other album (besides De-Loused) thats great from beginning to end, so I was hoping to see them live. All the albums in between ranged from "decently good" to "meh."
-
I find Deloused to be kinda middle ground. Amputechture is my favourite.
-
I'm sad to see them break up even if I thought Noctourniquet was a big, heaping slab of meh. They were pretty willing to do whatever they wanted and I'll miss that.
Also, whoever mixed or mastered Noc needs a good punch in the throat. There're some good songs on the album that are basically unlistenable because of how ear-shatteringly bad the music sounds.
Oh and Frances for life!

the mixing on Noctourniquet is lights years better than Bedlam. I only hear 2 tracks that the cymbals clip, or the reverb is excessive.

They both sound awful. Noc just has too much going on that it just sounds physically painful to listen to. At least for me it was.
Bedlam just sounded awful.

Bedlam was one of my faves, along with Frances and the mighty De-Loused of course. Bumout news :sadpanda:
-
The Mars Volta always kinda reminded me what Yes would have been like if Jon Anderson were into opiates instead of hallucinagens.
And yeah, I agree with the general consensus that there's a plummet in quality after FtM, obviously. I like Frances and Deloused very much, but they've been off my radar since Amputecture disappointed me tremendously. Every once in awhile I'm encouraged to give Bedlam or another newer TMV record a try, and I usually find it to be better than I remembered, though still not go.
This is still kinda a weird moment for me. A record store clerk encouraged me to check out The Mars Volta right when I was getting into progressive music, around my sophomore year of high school. I'd already discovered Tool the year before, and that'd led me stuff like Pink Floyd ironically. I was buying my first copy of "Dark Side of the Moon" when the clerk handed me "Deloused", which had just come out. He gave it to me for like $6, which must have been all I had. Anyway, I took the album home, popped it in, and was immediately blown away.
"Frances" didn't really impress me as much when I heard it a few years later. By that time, I'd discovered even mroe great music: dredg, Dream Theater, Yes, and so on. I was starting to sense that TMV's sound was more than a little bit derivative, and that compared to other stuff I was listening to, their music seemed to contain hefty amounts of fluff and incomprehensible white noise segments. I did get into "Francis" eventually, though, always willing to be challenged by new music.
By the time "Amputechture" and "Scab Dates" came out, I just didn't care. The former record sounded burnt-out, and frictionless. "Scabdates" was a joke: the first time I ever felt legitimately ripped-off by a record purchase from a band I liked. I was really excited when I heard the 4 song teaser from "Bedlam", but that excitement disappeared when I realized those four songs would be the best on the album.
After that, I discovered enough new music that I just didn't care about following TMV anymore. But, it's still interesting. One of the first bands I got into and one of the first I feel like I "discovered" right from the beginning are now broken up.

When I woke up and realized last night wasn't a bad dream, I didn't want to get out of bed. This is definitely the worst I've felt after any band broke up. I loved The Mars Volta so much, and never got the opportunity to see them live which makes all of this a lot worse.

and never got the opportunity to see them live which makes all of this a lot worse.
Me too. :'(

Cedric did say that he wanted to get back together with Jon and Ikey, so maybe in the future they might play music again, but with the way Omar goes through music I wouldn't be surprised if this is truly the end.
-
They were absolutely terrible and imagination shattering both times I had a chance to see them live so count yourself lucky honestly. Shoulda known since how bad Scabdates was, though.
-
I saw them at Sonisphere festival a couple of years ago, and I thought they were good. There was an improv-style section in the middle that dragged on quite a bit, but the beginning and end of their set were amazing!

When I saw them I think they only played 6 songs in an hour/hour and a half or so. No opening band. Lots of improvisation I think. I left after the Widow because I was a freshman who didn't want to miss class the next morning but apparently they stormed off the stage after that. The sound was terrible and muddled. I think it was just an off night for them because they were playing in more of a repurposed basketball court than the actual venue that other bands play at (Asheville civic center).
But I wanted to see them on this tour regardless. Surely they wouldn't have another bad night like that...
My rankings:
Deloused
Nocturniquet
Bedlam
Frances
Octahedron
Amputechture
Its odd to me how I go through periods of listening to nothing but TMV while only really liking two of their albums and a handful of songs from everything else.
-
Unfortunately, I think they had many nights like that. I talked to people who went to TMV shows I decided NOT to go to, and they came away pretty disappointed, too. I think they had real issues gelling as a live band when they lost their first drummer.
-
I saw them twice.
The first time we got this 2.5 hour setlist and it was amazing:
Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)
Viscera Eyes
Wax Simulacra
Goliath
Ouroborous
Tetragrammaton
Agadez
Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus
Aberinkula
Drunkship of Lanterns
The second time they were visibly annoyed about something - they played well but only for 1.5 hours.
I'm not as upset about this news as I thought I might be, since I didn't rate the last two albums highly at all.
-
:'( Never got to see Day Of The Baphomets live.
-
According to Cedric's Twitter description thinger, he's now El Paso's realest housewife.
-
Well, I'm sad.
-
I hated that Cedric was so "pointing the finger" towards Omar.
-
After a year to let Noctourniquet sink in, I have to say that I really enjoy this record. It hasn't moved on my list at all, but I feel that I can really appreciate it now. I can't listen to it all the time, but sometimes I just feel like I need to put it on.

Bumping this thread because Omar and Cedric are back at it with help from Flea and Dave Elitch in their new project ANTEMASQUE. It wasn't at all what I expected, but I love it nonetheless.

Can't say I like it as much as TMV, but it's still pretty cool.

Not as keen on it as I thought I'd be but it's certainly not bad. Hanging in the Lurch is catchy as all hell.
Will probably keep tabs on this.

ANTEMASQUE ALBUM ON JULY 15! (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/videos/mars-volta-members-antemasque-try-to-drown-all-your-witches-20140415)
-
OK, I've changed my mind. This is actually really good! I've fallen for all four released tracks at this point.
-
Sounds pretty cool. Gonna be looking forward to the album.
-
I gave Antemasque a quick listen, and considering I'm barely actively listening to music these days, it just doesn't sound like something I'm gonna be bothered with.
The Mars Volta, as much as I love them, have always been a band that, after the initial honeymoon period with one of their albums, didn't get a ton of replay.
And then suddenly this month, I'm putting them on every day, and they are pretty much all I'm listening to.
I've even been thinking about the (for me) almost inevitable question of "condense this band into 80 minutes", which, considering Cassandra Geminni is one of my favourite songs by any band, and I couldn't possibly leave it off, is a difficult one. This is the best I can come up with:
1 Tira Me a Las Arañas / Drunkship of Lanterns (I originally downloaded these two as a single track way back in the day, and they're inseparable to me)
2 In Absentia
3 Asilos Magdalena
4 Viscera Eyes
5 Ilyena
6 Wax Simulacra
7 Goliath
8 Cassandra Geminni
Obviously missing some biggies though (for me, Soothsayer, Roulette Dares, Cicatriz ESP, L'Via L'Viaquez, and Trinkets Pale of Moon).

Absolutely love Deloused; but other than that, I'm honestly annoyed by half their shit. :rollin It's really odd. I love Ilyena, and that's pretty much the only other song that's not on Deloused that I like (The Widow is also pretty neat). But yeah...I wouldn't pay a dime to see them, their sound is pretty damn 'modified', at least in regards to the singer. I'm not a huge fan of them but I might check out the new album...either way...Scabdates is horrible, and it certainly doesn't bode well for any performances...actually I'm not quite sure why they'd release that shit in the first place.
But Deloused will always be one of my favorite albums from any band. In all honesty, I'm completely okay with bands that are based in the studio some technological help...but I really don't go to concerts much these days and I doubt I will much again unless it's one of my few obsession bands... though it does take away some of the...er...magic.
-
Deloused is a fucking behemoth of a masterpiece. I'd honestly put it on my top ten albums ever. The only other song in their discography that gives me the same feeling as that album did is Day Of The Baphomets. That song is an 11-minute thrill ride that makes me want to go nuts and riot in the street.
-
Hrrmm...I'll have to check it out. Some songs though...are too crazy. This coming from someone who loves the most insane of SOAD songs...there's a lot of different kinds of crazy, theirs is a bit overbearing. There's just so much shit going on that is truly annoys me, it's annoying to hear because it's so much to take in, regardless of whether I like (or can even hear) the tune or not. For me, that pertains to almost all their discography. But juuuust the right amount of crazy...makes for one hell of a song.
I still haven't found a song that gets me into it or up and going as much as Eriatarka does. I don't think I ever will. Perfect harmony of bliss and destruction. I do have to say though...at some point in time, I think I'll listen to a song of theirs and the whole scheme will just click and I'll love all their songs.
Then again I also had a feeling that I'd turn into a super saiyan...I still can't power up without shitting myself. :'(
-
The song actually does remind me of some crazy-ass anime thing like Tetsuo's transformation or a well-animated DBZ fight. Just a crazy, fucked up situation that keeps escalating and escalating without stop. The song leaves you winded, but it's fucking awesome.
-
Definitely listen to Day of the Baphomets. What a song that is. Holy shit is that a song. Absolute madness but somehow coherent and... listenable. I can totally understand how someone might find TMV too chaotic to listen to. I did at first, but then I started to get into them more around the time when I was first getting into King Crimson and TMV, in my opinion, is basically the 21st Century's version of King Crimson.

That took me forever and frankly I could easily swap any of them out for Miranda, Meccamputechture, Asilos, Goliath, Eriatarka, Cicatriz, Noctourniquet, and Since We've Been Wrong. So yeah, difficult.
And I'm not a fan of Baphomets. I'm surprised so many people are.
-
Day of the Baphomets is pretty much my favorite song of all time.
-
Bump because I've finally checked out Mars Volta and At the Drive-In, and both are amazing. Boy oh boy was I late to this party. :hat

Hell, so was so I. I only checked out TMV a while ago with De-Loused and ATDI very recently with Relationship of Command. Both are fantastic. :hefdaddy
-
The four-song run with Drunkship of Lanterns, Eriatarka, Cicatriz ESP and This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed is incredible. The whole album is pretty much perfect, but those four tracks in a row is just the best. I'm really loving what I'm hearing. I'll probably move onto Frances this upcoming week, since I've spun De-Loused at least 6-7 times by now. :)
-
Definitely agree with that, and my favorite song on the album has got to be Cicatriz ESP. Frances is also fantastic if you liked De-Loused. I love it almost as much. :tup
-
This is band that probably took the longest for me to get into so far. I hated it at first, but it definitely grew. I'm still not really huge on them, but I like their stuff. Maybe they'll grow even more later on.
-

:tup That album is so amazing Zan! I'm glad you're digging it. I think you'll really like the rest of their material as well.
-
This band is kind of a mixed bag for me.
- Deloused: Top 10 album ever.
- Frances: pretty good but the noise interludes can get kinda boring. The final songs aren't as interesting as the first three either.
- Octahedron: simpler and more stripped down, though certainly blander too. I just enjoy it.
-----
- Amputechture & Bedlam: could never get into them, too convoluted for my liking.
- Noctourniquet: never listened to it, don't know if I'd like it.
-
I'm not even done with my first listen of Frances, but holy shit this is wonderful. The first "half" was great, but Cassandra Gemini is the real gem so far.
-
Whatever warts or problems it may have, I fucking love Frances. De-Loused is probably more consistent but there's just something magical about Frances.
-
Amputechture is still my favourite. Maybe just because it was the first I listened to but I love it a ton.
-
Whatever warts or problems it may have, I fucking love Frances. De-Loused is probably more consistent but there's just something magical about Frances.
I hear ya. Picking a favorite feels tough. On one hand, De-Loused might be consistent, because overall, that album needs no trimming. It's pretty much perfect. Frances on the other hand could use some trimming. The ambient/interlude sections take up some space on the album and I both like them for what they bring (some space and time to breathe) but they can also get a bit drawn out. However, despite this minor flaw (if you wanna call it that), Frances is such a journey and just takes you on a ride. I would say Cassandra Gemini is their best work, and it takes up 32 minutes of the album. The songs on the first half of the album are really great too, but the only minor "flaw" would be the filler stuff. Still, everything about the album is just wonderful.
-
I know I'm still very new to this band but they just keep blowing me away. Cassandra Gemini is already a personal favorite, and I see it becoming one of my all time favorite progressive rock songs really. The band is just on fire. I'm struggling to think about a single progressive rock song that has blown me away this much in the last 5 years. I love how it just builds and escalates during the first 3-4 parts, goes into experimental instrumental mode for the middle and comes back with the "anthemic" chorus towards the end.
I know some people consider Frances to have some filler (and I agree to a certain extent), but it's kinda amazing how the 32 minute song has none of that. Every minute, every second is pure gold.
-
So I'm listening to Amputechture and I can see why this is such a polarizing album. I read a review where they said "the band is testing the listener" and I can totally see that. On one hand, I almost want to turn it off, not because it's bad, but because it's pretty challenging and unlike the first two albums, not a lot of stuff that clicks instantly. However, I have a feeling that if I endure and stay with this album through 4-5 listens, I will be rewarded for it. It's The Mars Volta after all. I see this is as the kind of album you might really like after several listens, but after one listen it feels more scattered, more crazy and not as focused.
How is Bedlam in comparison? Is it more restrained or does it follow in the Amputechture style?
-
Bedlam the songs are more tight, shorter, more to the point, concise. However, the mixing and mastering is god awful, which makes it an unlistenable record to me.
But then again, Amp is filled with a ton of extensive repetitive sections which I and many others consider filler anyway.
If you like Deloused and Frances, I would go straight to their last album Noctourniquet and the Tremulant EP instead.
Even the stripped down/heavily acoustic Octahedron I prefer over both Amp and Bedlam. Although at least Amp does have a song like Viscera Eyes which works. But most of the record meanders for far too long without the huge climaxes that Frances has, which is why it doesn't compare to those 1st 2 LPs.
But then again, you enjoy an album like The Great Misdirect, which I find is guilty of the same thing (although I also find that album is rehashing ideas and trying too hard to sound like another band, being DT).
-
Bedlam the songs are more tight, shorter, more to the point, concise. However, the mixing and mastering god awful, which makes it an unlistenable record to me.
Oh man I agree. I just can not listen through that record.
-
I usually don't have any problems with mastering/mixing when it comes to albums, so I'm interested in how I will see/hear Bedlam.
-
I absolutely loved Amputechture from day 1. Second favourite Volta album after Frances. Vicarious Atonement might by one of my top rated album openers ever.
Something about it, I don't know. The repetitive sections never get even slightly old for me.
-
I decided to listen to Ampetechture a second time for the day, to see if a second listen to quickly after the first made any bigger impact, and it did. "Viscera Eyes" already clicked, what a fantastic song. I feel like overall the album was more enjoyable this second time. I think this could grow nicely for me. One thing I'm kinda on the fence with though, is how the album ends. That abrupt ending just comes out of nowhere.
-
I love Amputechture but I freely admit that it is The Mars Volta at their most excessive. I don't think the album holds together as well as DeLoused or Frances but it has some fantastic songs, probably some of my favorite Volta songs. "Day of the Baphomets," "Tetragrammatron," "Viscera Eyes," and "Vermicide" all rule.
-
I've listened to Bedlam in Goliath probably 4 or 5 times now and I don't see the criticism for it. To me it sounds fine. I mean, not like it sounds as amazing as De-Loused or Frances, but not bad enough to stop me from getting through the album. If you guys hadn't pointed out the mixing/mastering, I probably wouldn't have noticed anything to be honest. As far as the album goes, I'm willing to say I like this more than Amputechture. Not that Amputechture is bad, but this feels stylistically closer to Frances/De-Loused and has maybe a little bit more variety.
-
Bedlam's actually the only album of theirs I've been able to get into. the second half is too fucked up (and not exactly in a good way), but the first half of that album is spectacular.
it's the first album of theirs I ever checked out, and nothing else has ever lived up to the potential I saw in Bedlam. :-(
with the new Closure In Moscow, I finally found what I was looking for, not only when I first checked into TMV 6 years ago, but really all my life.
and since there's no CIM thread, I guess this is the most logical place to discuss them.
"just create a CIM thread, idiot"
you'd think that would be an option, but i'm only allowed to stat new threads every 1000th post. I know, its fucked.
-
You didn't get into Frances or De-Loused? I can see why people might struggle with Amputechture. It feels less chaotic than the others and more restrained, and despite having some long song that are very random, the pacing is kinda weird. I like the album though, but it's kinda challenging to get into. De-Loused and Frances are both pretty easy to get into IMO. Bedlam is taking some time for me, but I like it more with each listen. I really love the second half of it actually, and Ourobors/Soothsayer might be my favorite two songs in a row on the album.
-
DISCLAIMER: I'm an idiot, and these are just my opinions.
Bedlam is by far my favorite. De-loused is their best. Amputechture is creeping up the list. Noctourniquet disappointed me. Octahedron is underrated. Frances is overrated.
-
Haven't heard a lot from them but I do have their albums. I very much like Bedlam.

So far I would probably rank the albums like this:
Frances the Mute
De-Loused in the Comatorium
The Bedlam in Goliath
Amputechture
But I really do like all of them. I have Frances and De-Loused as 5 out of 5, Bedlam will probably be a 4.5 (just need a few more spins) and Amputechture is a 4 out of 5 for me so far. Even if Octahedron and Noctourniquet are disappointments, they still have a strong discography.
-
De-Loused In The Comatorium
Amputechture (I find this one really underrated,I mean come on guys the highlights on this are the band at their best.)
Frances The Mute
Octahedron
The Bedlam In Goliath
Noctourniquet
-
I'm curious, what is it about the sound of Bedlam that turns people off?
-
the mix is unlistenable. The cymbals clip constantly, it's like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. One of the hottest "loudness wars" examples out of any album in recent years.
Bedlam was definitely one of the 1st albums I clearly noticed how poor the mixing was, the splash and crash cymbals sound like high-pitch toned tambourines, which is purely based on the compression level of the mixing.
I actually think what they did poorly on AMP, being the songs seemed to be long-winded with a ton of repeated chord progressions and vocal lines, they actually corrected on Bedlam and the songwriting itself may actually be their best from a consistent song-2-song section-2-section basis. But the mixing so unbelievably hot and compressed sounding, namely in the handful of breakdowns with Thomas Pridgen, it totally ruins what would be possibly their best record in many respects.
But I'll repeat what I suggested earlier, check out the TREMULANT EP and then NOCTOURNIQUET which I didn't hear any mixing problems whatsoever, and it has some of Cedric's best vocal choruses.
-
Yeah I still have Octahedron, Noctourniquet and Tremulant to check out.
Also, is it just me, or does Cedric's singing get more high pitch/whiny with each album? It doesn't bother me yet, but I feel like on Amputechture, and especially Bedlam he sings more in his highest register than he did on Frances or De-Loused. Those had high pitch/high register singing as well, but maybe not as much. Maybe I'm grasping for straws, but just something I observed.
-
Octahedron takes awhile to get into, but it's worth it. I HATED it at first, but I absolutely love it now.
-
Octahedron was the first album from The Mars Volta I ever bought and listened to. Instantly fell in love with it.

I agree but I really haven't listened to Bedlam in a long time to properly judge the songs. The mix was bad enough that I just didn't like listening to it much.
But I'll repeat what I suggested earlier, check out the TREMULANT EP and then NOCTOURNIQUET which I didn't hear any mixing problems whatsoever, and it has some of Cedric's best vocal choruses.
Really? Noctourniquet is incredibly hot. The mix is pretty good but it's very, very compressed. I actually think it kinda works well on some songs, but over the course of a full album, it just leads to a serious case of ear-fatigue. Supposedly there's an unmastered version out there somewhere. I'd love to hear it and see how different/better it sounds.
Octahedron takes awhile to get into, but it's worth it. I HATED it at first, but I absolutely love it now.
Octahedron was the album that made me give TMV a second chance. I couldn't get into them beforehand but Octahedron provided the necessary push that I needed. :)
-
Well, it looks like I'm the only one who didn't really like Octahedron at first. I think it was because I was really looking forward to some more crazy Pridgen drums, but he was pretty subdued on the record.

I'm not a huge Mars Volta fan but I have a couple of their albums and I do enjoy them.
-
Yeah! Interesting news indeed. To me, however, Antemasque was basically new Mars Volta music anyway. I think it's amazing that they recorded their new album with Travis Barker, since he is my favourite drummer, and Blink one of my favourite bands from my teen years (together with the Volta).
That new interview with Omar on RollingStone (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/omar-rodriguez-lopez-on-epic-solo-album-series-new-at-the-drive-in-lp-20160711 (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/omar-rodriguez-lopez-on-epic-solo-album-series-new-at-the-drive-in-lp-20160711)) is the best interview I've read in a long, long time. Contrary to many interviews from years ago, he seems open and easy-going. And honest. Great interviewer he had, then.
-
None of the TMV side-projects have ever excited me nearly as much as this band, The Mars Volta is probably one of my favorite bands ever and I'm still trying to fill the void. Don't know whether this news is real or not but I would be beyond pumped to get some new TMV, or even those Omar solo-releases, I feel like he has been the main driving force behind TMV for most of their prime-era, though I'm not sure.

Well, he was the one (together with Cedric) giving most interviews, he wrote all the music for every album (and produced everything post-Deloused by himself), he was the one hiring/firing musicians, and the credits in every album post-Frances state that The Mars Volta is him & Cedric. He even directed a few videos. So yeah, he was clearly the main (actually the only) driving force behind the band. Once he formed Bosnian Rainbows in 2012, the whole thing was put on hold.
-
I'd love another ATDI or TMV album, but I don't really have much interest for anything else they do outside of that. I liked Antemasque enough, but it wasn't TMV or ATDI-tier of awesomeness.
-
omar said he wants to do mars volta in the future, but only if eva gardner's and jon theodore's schedules can line up. also, two original members are dead, so idk if this is ever going to happen, but we'll see. never say never.

-
Yes, great album! I found that one in early 2016 and its one of my favorite finds, definitely has some strong tmv vibes in Technochrist and title-track amongst others
-
I think At the Drive-in holds up well, and I'd put Relationship of Command in the same tier as Frances or Deloused, but what the members have done since leaving TMV just feels kinda zZzZzZz.

2 things I found in my YouTube feed some may find worth checking out.
1st: Cedric did a "What's in My Bag?" at Amoeba Records. Some cool choices in there..Syd Barrett, Van Dyke Parks and The Flaming Grooves

Also a channel I subscribe to "The Downfall Network" did a "Retrospective" about the history of TMV. Not too in-depth or anything, but it's a decent overview for 23 minutes

Hopefully whatever new stuff they do is more in line with Deloused, Frances, and Amputechture.

Whatever form this takes, I'm here for it. Hard not to be at least a little excited considering they are one of my favorite bands of all time. Every album they've put out has been at the very least pretty good (yes, even Octahedron).
Now, considering the passing of Ikey, I wonder how this is actually going to pan out. Either way, im definitely keeping my eyes out for this.
-
Octahedron wasn't even the worst. That award goes to the steaming pile that was Bedlam in Goliath :tdwn

:tup I freaking love the first half of Octahedron. It's like a 1-2-3-4 punch of greatness.
-

You know Ikey wasn't a member towards the end of the band's lifetime, right? For all we know, they could be planning to return with the Noctourniquet line-up.
By the way, I just noticed Cedric deleted some of these recent posts earlier today.
-
Octahedron wasn't even the worst. That award goes to the steaming pile that was Bedlam in Goliath :tdwn
yeah bedlam is nigh-unlistenable. the last album whaetver it was called wasn't much better. octahedron's fine, just a bit dull iirc
-
Hot take: Bedlam in Goliath is their 3rd best. So much of that album is pure fire.
-
if it could get remixed and remastered, I might agree with you.
The songwriting is really good on Bedlam, but most of it is still unlistenable for me due to hot production and mixing.
-
Yeah, there are definitely spots where the constant clipping and overall compression are a bit much. I won't lie though, there are some tracks that are so wild and face melting I just turn up the volume and don't care sometimes. :lol
-
Ranking time!!!
1. Frances the Mute
2. Amputechture
3. Deloused in the Comatorium
4. Bedlam In Goliath
5. Noctourniquet
6. Octahedron
Noctourniquet was such a big grower, for me all except Octahedron have the ‘masterpiece’ status. One of my favourite / probably my favourite band of all time
I’m not sure how I feel about the thought of a reunion.. I feel like if the magic is gone it might just sound like Antemasque which was pretty boring in comparison
Re: Bedlam That’s such a manic and unique album in their discography, I looove how crazy/reckless it sounds, and towards the end it’s just trippy/psychedelic to the max. On the odd day that could beat Deloused and crack the top 3 for me
-
1. Deloused in the Comatorium
2. Frances the Mute
3. The Bedlam in Goliath
4. Amputechture
5. Noctourniquet
6. Octahedron
In only 6 records, I love how pretty much each one scratches a very different musical itch than the next for me, part of what keeps me coming back to their discography no matter what. It took me a while to come around to Noctourniquet as well, but when it clicked for me, it definitely clicked. I like Octahedron well enough for sure, and it has its place in their catalog that stands out, but it does lack the memorability that all their albums have in spades of, if only just a bit.
-

And this is why it's impossible for me to rank their albums, any given album could be my number one on any given day (except for Noctourniquet, though it has some Great songs as well). I for one love both Bedlam and Octahedron to bits!
Wow, interesting to see what they come up with if there's new music in the making.

Looks like is a huge vinyl boxset, not a new album.
Who knows, if this sells well maybe they'd release a new album. We can only hope.
-
It's 18 LPs in a huge box (I would have to know the format of this box and if it will fit on my shelf). But it's like 500 bucks :omg: I hope they rerelease the albums one by one as well.

Yea same. I'm not fussed about owning everything on vinyl and I'm certainly not in a position to spend $500 on it! Not without compromising my marriage :lol
They may wait a good year before selling individually though. I only want Deloused and Frances.
-
I might be captain obvious saying that this is just too expensive, but 18 LPs costing 500 bucks, that means every single LP costs around 27 dollars. Frances The Mute has 3LPs, so basically, that album alone would cost over 80 dollars. A 2LP album is pretty standard nowadays and usually costs somewhere between 20 and 30 bucks. Here, every 2LP set would be over 50 dollars. Sorry, but nah. There are a bunch of other boxsets that I have yet to purchase. I haven't even bought the Steven Wilson remixes of the classic YES albums, and that one was reasonably priced.

April 23rd - La Realidad De Los Sueños
US STORE NOW SOLD OUT!
lol. Only 5,000 copies and a rabid fanbase, can't be too surprised.
Let's hope they come to their senses and issue at least all the proper studio records individually at an affordable price; although I wonder Cedric and Omar like how rare/unique and collector's item-like their vinyl records are, they may not want to.
But that only encourages more Unauthorized/Bootleg pressings like the 1 I bought of Frances a few years ago (not realizing it was unauthorized at the time).
-
Wow, already sold out. I'm not used to that in prog :lol Sometimes prog bands issue vinyl versions limited to 100 and they can still be bought months after their release for 25 euros at the official store.
-

TMV may be prog, but they are also a crossover band, they have had some mainstream success, the band's origins come from a totally different scene, and their fan base goes beyond prog circles.
-
And their vinyl is notorious for being rare, sought after and pricey af.
Hope the fact these sold out so quickly means they'll release each record separately.
-
yeah I remember seeing a copy at a Local Record store of Deloused like 7 or 8 years ago for $300. I was pretty shocked by that, but then came to realize it was pretty common.
I saw a copy of Octahedron for around $60 a couple of years ago and passed. I don't mind that record, but I don't like it enough to spend even half that much on it.
-
The promotional picture confuses me. Can anyone identify the format of this box? Will this fit into my vinyl shelve?

You're not just paying for the LPs, you're also paying for the box design and what's included in the box besides the LPs. And look at how the Vinyl set will sit in an angle on another base box.
-
Yeah I think with a boxset you're not just paying for what's included but also in this case a limited collector's edition that depending on how big of a fan you are would make it worth it.
For me it's too much in terms of how big of a Mars Volta fan I am, but if they were my favorite band I'd probably pay up just to own it.

anyone ever heard of ex-TMV members Thomas Pridgen and Adrián Terrazas-González new band
THE MASK OF THE PHANTASM ?
I know it's not TMV, but I was just suggested this album over the weekend and I am rather hooked!
Think The Mars Volta with a vocalist somewhat like Courtney Swain from Bent Knee, and using really tasty Saxophone at times. Like many, many Sax breakdowns.
The debut album from The Mask of the Phantasm "New Axial Age" was released in 2021, and is about 42 and a half minutes, so it hardly drags on much. But it's rather non-stop with riff after riff and breakdowns with a lot of soaring female vocals.
Very recommended for The Mars Volta fans

it's funny how multiple times in the last year, Cedric has posted about being retired.

If they came out of retirement and recorded another album in the vein of De-loused-Amputechture, that would be amazing!

I'm still taking this with a grain of salt until we get some hard, concrete, definitive information from the band
https://www.rockzonemag.com/el-regreso-de-the-mars-volta-esta-al-caer/
Waiting for what may happen, RockZone can confirm that this time the group's return to activity is serious, and it will not be limited to a reissue or a box set in the style of La Realidad De Los Sueños , but that Omar Rodríguez- Lopéz and Cedric Bixler have already recorded a new album and have a new line-up to go on tour.
This will be developed first by theaters in the United States and will be extended to European festivals next year. From what we know from sources close to the band, on their first album since 2012's Noctourniquet , the band's Latin roots will be more present than ever.
It seems that very, very soon we will be able to hear the first preview.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. I'm intrigued...

I think it's a perfect single to whet the appetite. It doesn't give too much away and I rather that than a nine minute epic or something. I personally hope they don't drop another single before the album.
I guess I'm going to be going back through their catalogue today then :lol
I've never been in love with this band, but have felt I've been on the cusp of really 'getting' them for a while. I really like a few albums and songs, but there's a large majority of their catalogue I just think is fine. They are an intriguing band though, and I revisit them probably more than a lot of bands I like considerably more.

Breaking a decade of omertà, The Mars Volta reawaken from their lengthy hiatus with an eponymous album that radically reshapes their paradigm. The new album shakes loose some of The Mars Volta’s long-standing shibboleths, fearlessly defying all expectations and categorizations. Instead, The Mars Volta pulses with subtle brilliance, Caribbean rhythms underpinning sophisticated, turbulent songcraft. This is The Mars Volta at their most mature, most concise, most focused. Their sound and fury channeled to greatest effect, The Mars Volta finds Rodríguez-López’s subterranean pop melodies driving Bixler-Zavala’s dark sci-fi tales of the occult and malevolent governments. Distilling all the passion, poetry and power at their fingertips, The Mars Volta is the most exciting and accessible music the group has ever recorded.
New album is up for pre-order in various formats, including CD, vinyl, and cassette!

Cool, thanks.
I am relatively new to their music (know and like a couple of tracks from Deloused), but dig the new songs and decided to preorder this vinyl version.
-
Thanks Marc.
A new single was also debuted today - Vigil

I'm hyped for the album but nothing about these pre-order deals really makes me overly excited to open my wallet. I know I'll end up ordering the CD from Amazon or something as we get closer to the date, but over 40 dollars for a regular black vinyl? I get the minimalistic approach for the cover and all the clothing but that also doesn't make me jump of excitement. If this was a colored vinyl and the t-shirt had something more to it (like an actual print and not just the band name in miniature text) I would probably spend 80-100 bucks on a package without hesitation but now I'm like "Eh I'll wait and just get the CD".

Yeah I basically paid 10 euros more for a golden foil cover instead of a brownish one (which does not look good to me). They should've made the golden one the regular edition, as the design seems made for that.
Unfortunately vinyls have gotten very expensive over the last year. I know inflation and all, but vinyls took like a 25% hike. Most new albums are 35-40 Euros here. I have learnt that if I want something it is usually better to buy it right away as the scalpers ensure every non-regular version will cost way more in the near-future. And our record stores have become scalpers as well, usually buying exclusive editions from other stores and selling them for a big markup later down the line.
-
Got a bit hyped for Mars Volta again and started to re-run my favorite one; Frances the Mute. Frances is one of the best prog rock albums I know and really unique / special. Not many albums out there like Frances.
However could someone outline the story a bit? I know the vague details like the person being a child born of rape with HIV who tries to search / understand what happened etc. But the details are a bit unclear to me and specifically what each character represents / are. Cassandra Gemini is specially unclear to me and I love the Plant a Nail in the Naval Stream part / climax, but have no idea what they are talking about ;D
-
Thread title certainly needs updating. "The band has broke up" and here we are talking about a new album?

New album Friday, how are we all feeling?
It's kinda crept up on me but I'm excited to hear it now. I've liked all the singles so far, even though a lot of fans really haven't.
Apparently it's going to be fairly poppy, which I have no problem with.

NME just gave it 5/5.

Im looking forward to it, I liked what I heard so should be fun :corn

An astounding masterpiece? That is high praise, indeed.
I listened to Vigil and it definitely sounds very different from what they’ve done before, but change can be good.
-
Just finished up the first listen and I really liked this record.
It is a really vocal centric album, the songs are all relatively short and it's more of a pop sound than they've had before. That all being said, it still sounds like The Mars Volta. I'm far from a super fan but I enjoy their music.
I'd listened to all the singles prior to release but damn, Vigil is hitting me so much harder than before. It is just gorgeous and Cedric's vocal melodies are doing it for me :heart
-
I had no idea this was going to happen, this is literally the first time I'm reading that the band had made new music! :o
Guess what I'll be listening to today!! :caffeine:
-
Enjoyed that, a bit different than what I expected but not bad at all :tup
-
Well, it sounds like TMV but it also doesn't sound like TMV, if that makes sense.
I can't say I hate or dislike it, but it's not quite what I had in mind. Also, the middle of the album blends together for me with songs that all sound/feel the same based on style, and even all run at about the same slow-ish tempo.
Again these are just first impressions, so repeated listens may reveal different feelings. I guess I expected some more high energy songs in there like old TMV, but it seems they were actively avoiding some of their older sounds.
-Marc.
-
I really missed having more upbeat tunes. I've never been a huge fan of TMVs slower songs. We'll see hw I feel after a few more listens, but the first impression was underwhelming for me.
-
the difference in style feels similar with what happened with Opeth on Heritage.
I hope this isn't foreshadowing the reinvention of their sound.
-
Did you two listen to a different album than I did?
Holy shit, what a cool record (one listen in).
-
i've been listening to more pop than ever lately so it stands out to me how absurdly hookless this thing is. like idk if the sound is good or not but it's melodically very flat
-
I've listened to this album 3 times today, and will probably go for a forth. I really like it, and it's apparently just the sound I'm looking for in a Mars Volta record.
I'm far from a huge fan, and if anything I find the band fairly overrated. I really like Deloused, and there are songs on Frances that I adore (The Widow and L'Via L'Viaquez³) but other than that I find the album overrated. As for their others, I enjoy them but can't say they come anywhere near all time favourite records.
I'm not gonna sit here and say I miss their old sound because I'm really not that invested. But, I do really like their new sound, and I'm wanting to spin this 4 times in a day, so it must be doing something right. I've seem a lot of people on reddit moaning about the change but I'm along for the ride and having a grand time.

I agree that it's really sonically pleasing, so much so I'm thinking about picking it up on vinyl.
I just can't stop listening to this thing. It's definitely going to make my top 10 of the year, possibly top 5. It's made me want to go have back and have a really focused, concentrated listen to all their other albums as well.
I'd actually love to go see them live now, whereas I wasn't too interested before.
-
i've been listening to more pop than ever lately so it stands out to me how absurdly hookless this thing is. like idk if the sound is good or not but it's melodically very flat
As I listen to this again, I find myself agreeing with this assessment. Each individual song is good enough, I just miss the insane, frantic hooks that old school TMV had. I loved the bizarre, frantic energy their upbeat songs had, and this album is distinctly lacking that energy, which is disappointing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Maybe I just went in with those expectations and felt underwhelmed, but I can see how some folks may still enjoy this album. I need to give it another chance with new expectations and the right mood/mindset.
-Marc.
-
The album clearly has lower energy levels, it is overall very chill. But I personally disagree with there not being hooks, I find it filled to the brim with good melodies.
-

This for me too. The sound is cool, but the music is pretty bland. I did wonder if a bit more energy might have compensated, but then I wasn't overjoyed with their last two albums either so I think maybe I'm just not that into the melodic style they use these days.
-
I liked it, but definitely not as dynamic as their earlier work.

I've liked it more every time I listen to it but it feels like one of those albums that will cap out at a 7/10 because nothing about it or the individual songs is really amazing or anything. For me it's more of a mood/vibe thing where I enjoy the atmosphere of the album and it fills a similar job for me as Valtari by Sigur Ros - another album that isn't among the band's best but has a chill vibe that appeals to me in a certain situation (like late night listening).
I'm still a bit puzzled by the extreme reactions to it (both positive and negative) because it feels too middle of the road to really warrant such reactions IMO. I guess maybe if you live and die prog and got a steven wilson tattoo on your back you might hate this because it offers very little in the way of prog, but there's way worse music out there imo. I thought Fantano's review was fairly spot on in this case and I think he gave it a 6.
Maybe expectations play into it - because I did not really have any at all. This was a band that had already declined over a few albums before they disbanded so it's almost impossible to think they would get close to Deloused/Frances levels. If you legit went into this thinking it could be an AOTY candidate then sure I get why you would be bummed out about it I guess.
-
It has definitely grown on me, and I'm really enjoying it. For me TMV have been a band that I've dedicated time listening to, mainly because they are so revered within the prog community.
I really like some songs and albums, but none would come near my top 100 albums. This album has helped me 'get' the band in a way I haven't previously. I'm excited to listen to all their music again, delve into the lyrics and immerse myself in where they are at right now.
You know how sometimes you can try and try with a band, and then some perfect storm of where you are, where the band is, where the community is, the imagery of the band etc, just works for you. I'm on the cusp of that right now and that's what I love about music.
You can't bottle it, and most of the time you can't even pinpoint what was 'right'.
Do I think this album their greatest? No. Has it sucked me in and started to the process of converting me to a more hardcore fan? Absolutely. Can I stop spinning it? Nope.
I do agree with some of your points Zantera. It's the overall mood/vibe that I like on this record. I love Cedric's vocal performance as well. I don't usually watch Fantano"s reviews, but I did watch this one. I mainly see where he is coming from.
As for the extreme reactions, TMV strike as a band who have the sort of fans who make the band their whole persona. Like, the sort of person who basically only listens to TMV. Based on the fact that this album is also the first in over 10 years, some fans would have been expecting this to be some perfect second coming or something.
Add to the fact it is more pop orientated and accessible, this had the potential to make certain fans real salty. They likely have a vision of what a TMV album in 2022 looks like, and they don't actually want it to be accessible or mainstream in any way.
I'd understand if some are feeling this album is a cash grab or something, but it truly feels to me like it is just the album they wanted to record.
That's why I love artists like Devin Townsend. He does what he feels, and fanbase be damned. But through that he's left with a really open minded fanbase who embrace whatever he does, because even if you don't particularly like it, you know it's fucking genuine!
-
Great post, twosuitsluke! I also love this album!

In Devy's case, I think it also helps that 1. his stuff is SO varied that who even knows what he'll release next, and 2. he is outrageously prolific, which means that even if he releases something that doesn't do it for you AT ALL, chances are he'll release something you like within a year.
-
By the way, thank you to whoever it was earlier in the thread (I'm guessing Soundscape but can't be bothered to check :lol) who recommended The Mask of the Phantasm. Finally got round to checking them out and the album is fantastic.
-
Whether people like or dislike the new album it almost feels like the band themselves don't like it considering it gets roughly 6 minutes of representation in their live setlist on the album tour. :lol
-
bump.
anyone ever heard of ex-TMV members Thomas Pridgen and Adrián Terrazas-González new band

Listening now as well!! I'm at song #4 and this album is pretty good! The opener immediately had me hooked and the singer is fantastic. I'm curious how I'll find the rest.

I don’t care for that album cover. It looks like a wad of dryer lint :lol
I will check it out though, as your description of their sound is intriguing.

But it DOES look like an image TMV might have used for an album cover had they not switched to the illustrator. :lol

Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon coming April 21st
https://us.cloudshillshop.com/pages/homepage
A few months after their self-titled seventh album announced the return of Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala as The Mars Volta, the group present a potent reimagining of that reunion opus. Much more than a simple “unplugged” reading of The Mars Volta’s 14 songs, this acoustic rendition furthers the mission of the source music, which drew into sharper focus the traditional Latin influences that have always inspired their music. This is, says Rodríguez-López, The Mars Volta’s version of a “folk record”, tracing the melodies and rhythms of the parent album back to their traditional Caribbean roots and challenging listeners to hear the group in an entirely new light.
