Seriously, if you just look at his studio albums you are going to find nothing but pure gold, spanning hundreds of genres ranging from noise to world to trip hop. His distinct voice mixed with his raspy lows and shrilling highs combined with his interesting choices of arrangements makes him completely unmatched in almost any area.
Another interesting aspect is the live show he performs. He uses props, costumes, etc. to really add a completely new level to the show. I saw him on the "Growing Up" tour and we got a whole slew of awesome skits, ranging from PG inside a zorb, to him and his daughter having segway races, to him getting buried in dirt and shit. So fuckin' cool.
I'm blasting his most recent studio release (of original material), Up and am completely blown away yet again.
In this topic we appreciate everything Peter Gabriel.
-
Up is one of the best albums ever; definitely his his best album. Just about everything else is great, too, with other standouts being Security, Melt, So and Passion: Music for the Last Temptation of Christ.
Secret World Live is probably the best live concert video ever created. I could watch the live versions of "Washing of the Water," "Across the River," "Don't Give Up" and "Secret World" over and over all day and never get tired of any of them. :coolio
The phrase "musical genius" gets overused at times, but Peter Gabriel is one who is absolutely deserving of that title.

Meh. His solo career had great moments, but they never hit me sooo hard.
Gabriel-era Genesis however... *drools*
-

Yes indeed. Up, Us, 3, and Security are fantastic albums. Especially 3 and Us, which seems to be underrated and overlooked by everyone. Secret World Live is one of my favorite live albums ever.
-
I think we've discussed this before, but I was never wild about Us until I saw the bulk of the songs on the SWL DVD. I don't know, the studio versions of most of their songs just seemed a bit unfinished and not quite polished enough. Plus, that disc doesn't have the bite and sonic wonderfulness that his others do. It doesn't sound bad; just not as good as the others. Still a good disc. :)
-
Listening to Up last night was amazing! Definitely gonna have to check out more of his solo work.
-
Up is such good night music.
-
Up is such good night music.
Yes, seriously. It's like all the emotions of night too. Fear, lust, sadness, depression, etc.
-
I haven't heard that much from his solo work, but Solsbury Hill is a wonderful song.
-
Most of whats been said are things I would say myself...SWL is out of this world awesome, Up is great, as are the rest of his catalog...so I'm going to say that I've always had a particular appriciation for his first album (Car). Maybe its because the its the second PG album I bought, but I probably listen to Car as much as I do any other PG album not counting SWL.

Quadrochosis likes this.
Glad to see so many fellow PG fans here!
-
Have you guys all noticed that the video shot of "Washing of the Water" was done in one continuous shot? That is some damn fine directing, especially the way it circles around him as he plays the piano near the end of the song and then pans away and ends up in the same spot where the song began.
-
I like Peter Gabriel. I don't actually own any of his albums (this will change soon) but I've heard many songs by him and I liked what I've heard thus far.

Definitely get Up. It's an album unlike any other.
-
I appreciate the efort PG puts into his craft. Who sounds like him? Who's live stage compares to him? He is in a league of his own. More Than This is a song I could play 100 times in a row on a long trip.
-
At the risk of sounding like a total fogey: Peter Gabriel with Genesis is brilliant. PG solo is....okay. Not a huge fan of the African beats thing.

Perfectly understandable. While some may not like his use of percussion and his more modern approach to his sound, I totally think he utilizes it in an amazing and innovative way. In fact I think most of the time he uses modern technology better than many artists that solely use it.
-
LudwigVan: You are a fogey.

I have to admit as well that I don't know much of his solo work (I have his first album, which is great), but PG era Genesis is gold.

LudwigVan: You are a fogey.
Ahh, there's no denying the truth of it
-
My first ever concert was a Peter Gabriel show in Wantagh, New York. It was on the "Growing Up" tour on June 24 of 2003.
He did all sorts of cool skits for each song, like a zorb, and segways and stuff. It was pretty freakin' cool and being 12 at the time, I can really say that I was impacted HUGE by it. I can probably trace my entire modern musical taste to that show. PG really saved my life when it comes to music, come to think of it..
-
I love everything Peter Gabriel has ever written, except his work with Genesis.
I much prefer his solo work and post-Gabriel Genesis to the work when he was in Genesis.
Gabriel-Genesis has never done I thing for me. I've tried and I still listen to it, but not nearly as much as Gabriel's solo work and post-Gabriel-Genesis.
I think there was a lot of growth in both parties after the split.
-
I don't know any of the songs in Up...
That is a great reason to get the album. It's such a wonderful blend of elements he has previously done along with directions he never went before.
-
"Sky Blue"
"I Grieve"
"Signal to Noise"
These are three songs that people should still be listening to hundreds of years from now. :hat

Those are actually my three favorite songs on the album, :lol
Both "Sky Blue" and "I Grieve" have made it onto my 2010 playlist.
-
Needed to resurrect this thread as I'm listening to Secret World live right now and it's just amazing. One of the best live cd's ever. :) Peter Gabriel has to be one of my all time favourite musicians ever. I want I Grieve played at my funeral.
-
:tup Such a great musciain.
-
A most worthy bump. :tup :tup
-
Anyone catching the New Blood tour? Hearing some of the orchestral arrangements of "San Jacinto" on youtube has convinced me that an album of orchestra PG songs is a fantastic idea, and a concert would be even better. Better than Scratch My Back at least, which was just all right except for the Street Spirit cover (which was pretty bad).
-
I'd go if he came here, but I don't think he has EVER come to St. Louis as a solo artist. >:(
-
The only song from him i heard of is "I Grieve" and i have to say it's a pretty amazing song and his voice is amazing :metal
edit: i found a vid on youtube of the song : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH3aimBnK4A

I really appreciate this man :hefdaddy
-
UP is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. I love the Growing Up live too. The Jesus Egg :hefdaddy
-
So I just bought Up and Melt.
Sweet, holy, mother of god, Family Snapshot has got to be one of the most powerful, emotional and beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard in my life. It nearly brought me to tears today. Its very rare that a song moves me is such a way. Absolutely incredible :hefdaddy
-
Interesting that this thread popped up.
I had never heard that much of his solo material (beyond the obvious singles)...so I decided to start from the beginning and check out "Car" from the library.
In listening to it in the car on the way home, I was immediately struck at how much Moribund the Burgermeister sounds like Genesis. I thought he left to do something different??? Still, I loved it, and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of it!
-
Moribund sounds more like Genesis than any other PG solo song does. It's like he got it out of the way first and then moved on to other stuff.
-
Just got Car yesterday. Can't wait to listen!
-
Just got Car yesterday. Can't wait to listen!
Car is next on my list.
Solsbury hill is such a cool song.
-
I do love the meltyface album, and also So... I need to get more of his stuff.
-
Just got Car yesterday. Can't wait to listen!
Why did you wait so long to get it? :omg:
That album's one of his most interesting, actually. Its like PG said "Right, I've left Genesis because that eagle told me to, and I don't want to repeat what I did with them, so what style of music should I play?" So he tried out almost every genre outside of heavy metal and then ultimately didn't choose any style to continue in. :lol
-
Having heard the New Blood version of Mercy Street makes me love the song even more. Put both versions in my playlist.
-

I've always been a huge fan of Mercy Street and the new version is very cool.
I am listening to Sky Blue at the moment and it is utter bliss. :heart

Me too, had to go watch it again, and saw a video for him doing that song on Letterman with a symphony, so I cliked that one to watch it, and was greeted with this...
Fuck, just stay the fuck out of my world forever you fucking talentless skank.
(letterman clip was good though, finished off the song with hints of Ode to Joy, really nice touch)

Wow, that was a great version as well. And that Ode to Joy insert was beautiful.

Still, two of my greatest concert experiences were at PG shows. In 1987 in Dallas, he did his standard stage dive to "Lay Your Hands On Me", and he chose me as the one to hold his heels as he fell back. Amazing.
I still think Passion is one of my favorite albums, though obviously INCREDIBLY different from his normal solo works. Just a very deep album. Great stuff.
Check out the live version of "Mercy Street" from the So tour (sed to be on video). Incredible vocal prowess.
-
Passion is definitely awesome, but for me it is one of those CDs that is good to listen to from start to finish like once or twice a year. Not a CD that demands frequent listens, but still killer nonetheless.
I saw a youtube clip of him stage diving to Lay Your Hands On Me years ago, and it certainly looked like fun. :tup :tup

Um....yes please!!
From Levin's FB page:
Sooo… here's the big news (pun intended!): The official announcement has just appeared on Peter Gabriel's site, he will tour in Canada and the U.S. in Sept. and October. It'll be to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the SO album, and the backup band will be much the same as for the original SO tour. It's going to be very exciting. I have the currently confirmed tour dates and venues up on my site, though I doubt the tickets will be on sale yet. t.l.
And the dates:
with PETER GABRIEL Back to Front Tour
Sept 16 Quebec City / Colisee Pepsi
Sept 18 Montreal / Bell Centre
Sept 19 Toronto / Air Canada Centre
Sept 21 Philadelphia / Wells Fargo Centre
Sept 24 Boston / TD Garden
Sept 26 Detroit / Palace of Auburn Hills
Sept 27 Chicago / United Center
Sept 30 Denver / Red Rocks
Oct 2 San Jose / HP Pavillion
Oct 5 Las Vegas / Planet Hollywood Showroom
Oct 6 Los Angeles / Hollywood Bowl
Oct 9 Santa Barbara / County Bowl
More dates as they are confirmed
-
I will be at that Philly show. :metal :metal
Seeing Peter Gabriel live is at the very top of my concert bucketlist and so is one of my favorite albums, so this is awesome!!
-
Awesome that Tony Levin will be in the band. He adds so much to those early albums. Possibly the later ones as well, but I don't know because I've never listened to them. I should remedy that.
-
Need something close to Raleigh please...*crosses fingers*

AFAIK he's on all of his studio albums that don't involve just an orchestra.
-
I really wanna go to the Boston show but from what I understand tickets are really expensive. :-\

Up is a pretty solid album, with sky blue probably being my favorite track off of it.
-

They do have the cheap seat arounf $45. I would do that because you never know how much longer he will tour.
-
i really hope there is going to be a british leg of that tour :-)
-
Honestly, I am surprised to see Peter Gabriel do this type of tour; I never thought he'd be one of those guys that would tour on an album from decades ago.
-
So fucking sweet, I finally get to see him. Oct. 2, I can manage the cash by then, probably will be around the same price as Wall tickets were I'm sure.
-
25 YEARS AGO?! No fucking way. It can't be. I'm not that old!! I was a high school senior when I went to that tour. That's simply not possible. Somebody fucked up on the math.
-

I'm with you. I was a junior in HS. Where the hell has the time went?!
-
^^^ If It makes you guys feel any better, I wasn't even born yet ;D
But really this is all just jealousy since you guys got to see a lot of great bands in their prime, and didn't have to break the bank to do so.
-
But at the time I was making arounf $3.75 an hour so it was breaking the bank for me! :lol
-
My first concert was Styx The Grand Illusion for 5 dollars, the same as an album at the time, so I figured that sounded about right. When Emerson, Lake & Palmer came to town a few years later on the Works tour, it was 9 dollars, and I thought "Whoa... why so damned expensive?"
-
And not Bob it's a $100 smackers on average. Crazy.
-
Yeah, that's what I mean. You actually have to save up for tickets now, plan it as your major entertainment for the month or something. Back then, it was just like buying an album. It's on a completely different scale.
-
I remember going out to eat after drinking on the way up of course. :lol and buying a shirt and tourbook for every show. Can't do that now. But for this show I will break the bank to see.
-
So it doesn't look like he's coming anywhere close to the south. God damn it.
-
Yeah, that's what I mean. You actually have to save up for tickets now, plan it as your major entertainment for the month or something. Back then, it was just like buying an album. It's on a completely different scale.
This.
I pretty much have to strategically plan out my year as to what I can see and can't just because the prices are so high. Like Rush for instance, they are my favorite band in the world and I just spent the last two years saving up the money to see them in decent seats. Then my uncle shows me his PW stub and its like 8 bucks
-
If what I read is true, since becoming a solo artist, Peter Gabriel has NEVER came to St. Louis. >:( :censored :(
-
I am seriously considering not visiting my gf in Chicago this June so I have money to go on a PG roadtrip in September. Or maybe I'll get lucky and find some kind of gainful employment in the next few weeks.
-
Just bought Peter Gabriel tickets.
Originally going in, I was all gung ho and was like "screw the price, I want to be close, this is a once in a lifetime thing" and then I saw the $170 price for floor seats and was like :eek
Ended up going with the middle grade tickets.
-

Not visiting the girl because cannot afford both girl and concert.
I... I...

Gonna be $100 dollar dig for me, fucking ticketmaster and their$20 fee.
-
Gonna be $100 dollar dig for me, fucking ticketmaster and their$20 fee.
Yeah seriously.
I just saw a band last week where the ticket was $15 but after paying the convenience fee and processing fees the total was $30 bucks. The damn fees were the entire price of the ticket. Then they have the balls ask me if I want to insure my ticket for an extra $15 bucks. WTF

My two tickets for DT in july were $99, $130 after Ticketmaster pulled out. Doubling the price of the ticket though is just fucking ridiculous.

Dude, I recently got SO lucky. I checked with my girlfriend if there was anything happening the weekend of Sep. 7th as I wanted to roadtrip for Rush's opening night. She said no... so I went ahead and bought tickets for myself, sister, and best friend. Then she remembers one of her best friends is getting married on the 8th. Having already bought the tickets it saved me either the begging and dog house of still going to the show, or just deciding to miss it, and I'm very thankful that bullet was dodged.

I love Solsbury Hill. Like, I know it gets played on the radio. But, I feel a strong connection with it for some reason.

So I'm going to see
god tomorrow, uh, I mean Peter Gabriel. This is my first time seeing him and I hope for it to be one of the defining concert experiences of my life.

Well, I made it there just in time for PG to come on stage, after being stuck in traffic, but the people next to me said there was a short acoustic set of like 4 songs. I didn't see it so I'm not 100% sure of what that actually was.
-
Ah, that was PG I think. He played a new song, Come Talk to Me, Shock the Monkey, and Family Snapshot acoustically, I think.
-
Come Talk To Me acoustic? Fuck yes! Only ten days till I get to cross another item off my bucket list.
-
Ah, that was PG I think. He played a new song, Come Talk to Me, Shock the Monkey, and Family Snapshot acoustically, I think.
Yes that's it and it was done with the house lights on oddly enough, but that may not have been part of the plan. I was starting to get worried that the whole concert was going to be stripped down acoustic, but then they kicked in the regular versions and killed the lights.
and also, it was kick ass to finally see Tony Levin live. He was incredible. Now I want to see him with KC.
-
Well gents, looks like it's my turn tonight.
I can honestly say, if I had a live concert bucket list of artist I had to see before i died(ones that were feasible, of course), tonight I would be crossing the last one off that list. Feels good man.
-
You lucky dog!! I want a review from you.
-
I finally broke down and cheated last night by watching some YT video of the tour. the light show seems out of this world.

Wow, what a killer concert. It was everything I thought it would be and more. That had to be one of the most emotionally charged vocal performances I have ever seen, by both Peter and the girl who sang with him. Don't Give Up and Mercy Street left me stunned and speechless.
-
Just a bump to say that I am currently spinning a slab of vinyl that I only recently acquired and had never heard....
Peter Gabriel Plays Live... of course, his first live album.
I'm only just finishing the first track, and my jaw is already on the floor. The only PG I've been familiar with are the first album (which I love), the hits (which are hit and miss) and So (which is also only hit and miss).
But one track in, and this live album is already AMAZING.
-
I've never heard that live album, but if it was by PG back in the day, I am sure it is awesome. :hat

How I would rank his solo albums (that I've heard):
1. Car
2. Melt
3. So
4. Scratch
5. Security
6. Us
Car is absolutely incredible.

Car is absolutely incredible.
agreed and Here comes the flood is godlike

Well, the two covers albums were really good. While it doesn't excuse a lack of new material it was definitely an interesting venture.

New Blood was really good. Scratch My Back was hit-or-miss.
The way I'd rate them:

I listened to Security for the first time today. I knew Shock The Monkey (didn't know that Peter Hammill sang backing vocals on it, so that was cool to find out!) from hearing it on the radio, but I was unfamiliar with the rest of it. I was very impressed with the whole album, especially Wallflower and The Family and the Fishing Net.

Security is amazing, and amazingly underrated.
-
The most intense live moment (aside from me being chosen by PG for his stage dive during "Lay Your Hands On Me"), was definitely "Mercy Street" during the SO tour. The mantis-looking lighting was stark, and almost showed emotion as they "turned away" from him as he asked for mercy. Powerful moment. It was on the "POV" video from the 1987 tour.
-
holy shit Red Rain is a fantastic song
-
holy shit Red Rain is a fantastic song
indeed sir. i love the gritty way he sings that song.
-
yeah. though, it can sound a tad rough live.
-
Peter Gabriel's one of the best singers ever. I feel he really found his voice on III, and transitioned from his early days to his classic, more mature and controlled voice. The first time I hear it is in the "I don't know how to stop" lines on No Self Control.

I revisited some songs yesterday. And yes, Here Comes The Flood still blows my mind.

Yeah. And I think the version of Mercy Street on Growing Up Live is superior to any other versions.
ALSO! If anyone has missed this..

About a 70 minute string set on Letterman. Songs like Solsbury Hill are in a slower tempo, and it gives it a really cool vibe. I don't think Gabriel can do any wrong.

Well,I had a crush on her when I was like 5.

Snapple, do you really think the Growing Up Live version is better than the haunting version from POV? 26 years later that version STILL gives me chills.

The Growing Up live DVD is pretty great from a visual standpoint, but PG's aging voice resulted in most of the songs not sounding as great as the original studio versions or earlier live versions (for the older songs). Secret World Live is a hundred times better, in every regard.

I haven't seen that one.
-
I saw that show in Dallas in '87, and that will stand as one of the most emotional songs I've ever seen live. The lighting structures were practically alive as he begged each one for "mercy", and they turned their "heads" away. Plus, PG's voice was simply stellar. Words cannot express.

At my new job they're letting pick the music that'll be played in house.
What I have selected already...
Peter Gabriel: So
Peter Gabriel: Car
Sting: Symphonicities
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue
Return to Forever: Romantic Warrior
Gordian Knot: Gordian Knot
Gordian Knot: Emergent
It's going to be fun there!

I want your job. I don't care what it is.

I wish I could pick dream theater, but it's supposed to be sort of "easy listening" music. My boss loves Peter Gabriel, so it was easy to convince him of that.

I could listen to this man's stuff all day long. He's probably right now one of my top 10 artists of all time. God, his Scratch my Back versions are absolutely stunning, better in some cases than the originals.
-
Peter Gabriel's "And I'll Scratch Yours" CD comes out next month apparently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kYbmTMbinQ&feature=youtu.be
I hope he releases some new original material someday.

Gabriel (post-Genesis) is one of those guys who I never worry about. I'm always into whatever he wants to express.

Meeeeeeeeee too.
All these covers sound good though (at least the ones we haven't heard already). Looking very forward to Arcade Fire's cover.

Damn, it's official. Peter Gabriel just made it to my top 5 artists of all time.

PHISH And PETER GABRIEL To Perform “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway”? (https://www.prog-sphere.com/news/phish-and-peter-gabriel/)
-
Oh, so now Peter wants to do it again, now that Genesis is no more.
Well, if there's a band that could cover it, it's Phish. Phish can play anything.
-
I doubt it'll happen. Anastasio is just saying that they'd be willing to play it with him.
-
I'm a huge Genesis fan but I've never been able to get into Peter's solo stuff. Any suggestions on where to start?
-
So and Peter Gabriel III are my favourites, although I think the fourth is the one I hear about most often. Either way, they're all massively different from Genesis, so I'm not really sure where is a good start.
-

Ah. I didn't read the article. I guess I should have (but I didn't care enough).

His solo debut got me sold. It's one of my very favourite albums ever.

Definitely Peter Gabriel third album (popularly called "Melt").
If you like it, check Passion (film score of The Last Temptation of Christ, one of the best works he did), Peter Gabriel fourth album (Mask) and So too.
-
Ancient thread, but I was just listening to PG's "Down to Earth". What a brilliant song.
-
I like Peter, certainly a true artist in every sense of the word (and a handsome man, to boot), but if there was ever an artist that needed a Lucy Jordache, or a Nick Davis, or (to use other musicians), a Mike Portnoy or a Jimmy Page, it's Peter. He has a b-sides/soundtrack/unreleased on album box set in his archives that most musicians would kill for. But his catalogue is woefully underserved.
(Phil Collins, too). I'm very surprised that with the care and love that the Genesis catalogue got (especially with the 5.1 releases) that Phil and Peter - being the mouthpieces, and the most successful of the solo artists in the group - don't take the lead on their own material.

I don't have a problem with anything solo the man has ever done....especially live.

Bumping this to say that I decided to go back and start buying the PG solo albums, and I just purchased the newest re-release of the first album (later titled "Car")
The music isn't the issue, it's the sound quality. Seriously one of the worst sounding CD's I have EVER purchased. I mean, this CD just sounds so bad. It may even be worse than the original CD of the self-titled Rush album before it was remastered. It's just freakin awful.
It almost sounds like a flat transfer...like it wasn't EQed or anything. It is flat and thin and just garbles when you turn it up. I thought it might be my speakers, but I bought a couple of others CD's at the same time and they sound fine. Granted, it may have been a bad idea to put it in immediately after SW's new remix of Jethro Tull's The Minstrel in the Gallery album....but still. YUCK! Anyone else had an issue with the newest re-releases of the older albums?
-
Just watched the So documentary on Amazon Prime. It was a great behind the scenes. Loved the Manu katche stories. I must say, production wise, it’s one of the greatest albums out there.
-
I'll have to check that out. PG almost always seemed to take great care in how his albums sounded. So, Up, Melt and Security all sound fantastic.
-

True! So is one of the best sounding albums of all time!
But no matter how much he is a perfectionist, he should hurry up and release some new music already! :lol
-
PG 4 (Security) is a top ten album for me. For me it's his masterpiece.
As for new music, I have a feeling Up will prove to be his swan song (ignoring all that 'Scratch my Back' and 'New Blood' malarky). He'll be 70 next year, and it's almost 20 years since Up. If there was another album in him I think we'd have heard it by now.

I haven't heard Scratch My Back. But I did hear his version of Heroes on Stranger Things and was absolutely freaking out at how good it was. It took me a minute to even process what I was hearing. It was like... "Oh hey, this is Peter Gabriel, I've never heard this one before." "Wow, this is a really freakin cool song, I wonder what album this is on." "OMG THIS IS A COVER OF HEROES!!!!!"

Scratch My Back is hauntingly beautiful.
You guys can all call me crazy, but if I got asked which is my favourite PG album, I'd probably name Scratch My Back.
-
Scratch My Back has great orchestral arrangements IMHO. (and song choices to cover too). I'm a big fan of PG (both Genesis and otherwise), seen him live in 2014 too. I loved it. So is one of my alltime favourites (as are his first four records except PG2: Scratch)

Agreed. For my money, Up is his best solo album. Sky Blue and I Grieve, in particular, are tremendous individual song achievements.

San Jacinto is a top.5 PG track for me.
Same here.
If I had to list my top 10 PG solo songs, I'd go with:
Sky Blue
I Grieve
San Jacinto
Mercy Street
Solsbury Hill
Washing of the Water (live from Secret World Live)
Biko
Secret World (live from Secret World Live)
Family Snapshot
Red Rain
-
Up's defintely a fantastic album, and if it ends up being the one that caps his career it'll be a fine way to end it.
A top 10 is all-but impossible for me, the best I can do is 15. In chronological order (* indicates top 5):
1. Moribund the Burgermeister
2. Humdrum (*)
3. Here Comes The Flood
4. On The Air (live version on Plays Live is fanastic too)
5. DIY (as above)
6. Home Sweet Home
7. The Rhythm of the Heat
8. San Jacinto (*)
9. Lay Your Hands On Me (*)
10. Red Rain
11. Mercy Street (*)
12. In Your Eyes
13.Secret World (* - live version on Secret World Live may be his single finest moment)
14. I Grieve
15. Signal To Noise
And even that kills me to leave off songs like White Shadow, Mother of Violence, Family Snapshot, Not One Of Us, No Self Control, Intruder, Biko, Wallflower, Love to be Loved, Digging In The Dirt, Downside-Up, Father Son, Make Tomorrow, Darkness, Sky Blue, My Head Sounds Like That...
PG 2 (Scratch) seems to be the runt of the litter with most fans but I absolutely love it. It has a really cool 'low-fi' feel that I like, especially coming after the 'everything but the kitchen sink' approach he took on his debut, where it seems to me he was eager to explore all the music he hadn't been able to in Genesis (barbershop quartet, jazz, orchestral), with...'interesting' results, if a little bit messy. The debut sprawls, it's like a huge feast, whereas PG2 feels like some cool little record he recorded in his basement during a quiet moment.
-
More Than This is my go to on Up.
-
Peter Gabriel is totally awesome.... his records with Genesis are fantastic and so are his solo albums.
Soo glad that I got to see him live 3 times:
- Secret World Live 1993-04-13 - THE best concert I have ever seen. Totally amazing from start to finish, both musically and as a show.
- Growing Up Live 2003-04-24 - Very good, but can't hold a candle to SWL
- Back to Front ' 2014-05-22 - Still good but prefer the two earlier
The only complaint I have is that he has released too few albums....

probably but I personally love almost all of them
-
I agree he hasn't released many albums, but like Stadler suggested earlier there's a tonne of other goodies waiting to be mined if/when he ever re-releases his albums. Some of his b-sides and non-album tracks are fantastic. Curtains, Don't Break This Rhythm, Courage, Across the River, Soft Dog (interesting and eerily beautiful soundscape from the Security sessions, it fits the mood of that album perfectly and would make a fantastic closing bonus track), Wild (instrumental track from the Up sessions), Walk Through The Fire, and many more odds and sods. His vault is reportedly stacked with stuff. I'd love him to do what King Crimson do and release bells and whistles versions of his first 4 albums, complete with outtakes, b-sides, live performances (Gabriel always brought an amazing freshness to his songs live, sometimes looking at them from a completely different angle; listen for example to No Self Control on the Plays Live disc), demos, etc.

Dave, are you aware of the back story to Scratch? Well, there are two, one confirmed, one... only hinted at.
The confirmed: there was a trilogy of albums planned, all produced by Robert Fripp. Peter's second album, Fripp's Exposure, and Daryl Hall - yes, THAT Daryl Hall - Sacred Songs. Several songs overlapped (Exposure was on PG's album and on Fripp's; Here Comes The Flood was on Exposure, and I think there were four songs on Hall's record that turned up on Exposure). Hall's management/record company put the kibosh on the whole endeavor, saying that the Hall record wasn't "commercial enough" and burying it for I think like four years. I've heard Hall talk about it a couple times in recent years (once on Dan Rather's interview, and once on his "Live From Daryl's House" when Ben Folds asked him about it) and he's extremely bitter about it even today. It was a legitimate artistic statement and a stab at - for lack of a better word - artistic integrity, and the business overwhelmed that. Robert Fripp has said multiple times that Hall is the best pure singer he's ever worked with, bar none.
The hinted: the "Mozo" concept. It came about in "On The Air", but is hinted at thematically in several songs, from the first album up through So. It was a character, not terribly far from Rael in the lamb (some of the themes are similar) and was to ultimately be a broader artistic statement, including a movie and/or a play with the character as a centerpiece. The songs we know that reference Mozo are "On The Air", "Here Comes The Flood", "Down The Dolce Vita", "Exposure", "Red Rain" and possibly "That Voice Again". Some speculation includes songs off Up as well ("Signal To Noise" and possibly "Darkness") as well, though all unconfirmed (and the more obsessive PG fans have basically been able to tie almost every song to Mozo, and that's just not what was intended.)
This is informative, but in my opinion, takes as fact too many things that are mere speculation: https://andrewdubber.com/2015/02/the-birth-of-mozo/

Is there like a B-side compilation available?
There is not. And to Dave's point, when Peter put together the massive "So" re-release, he explicitly and purposefully did NOT include the b-sides and outtakes. I can't find it right now, but I remember reading a fairly extensive treatise on his approach to that, and he simply does not want to look back. Even the re-released material, he wants to play with and fuck with to bring it current.
Honestly, I do not believe we will see a comprehensive anthology from Peter during his lifetime (or at least his active music career). And also to Dave's point, that's a shame, because some of those songs are hidden gems. For example, there are four different, official releases of "I Have The Touch" (not counting live releases, of which there is at least one). The hardest one to find - the one for the movie "Phenomenon" - is, in my opinoin, by far the best, and it deserves a more proper, in context release.
As I said above, Phil too.

That's a hell of a track list. Three CDs, not everything but pretty darn close (and that's not a criticism; some stuff was released on the 30th So release, and on the "Rated PG" soundtrack release).

B-Sides and Soundtrack stuff. Some of it is... very Peter (i.e. weird) but some of it is essential. You need that version of "I Have The Touch", for example.
-
I love Peter Gabriel, but I have to admit that him tooling his fans has annoyed me that much by now that I lost my interest a little. 5 or 6 years ago, I surely would have listened to those 60 tracks on repeat, simply because I couldn't wait for new PG material. But even to the "really" new songs (I'm Amazing, The Veil), I have listened to like 2-3 times only. It's very admirable that he is helping people and doing charity work... BUT GAWDAMNIT PETER stop getting involved in 87 different things and finish your new album.
-
Peter Gabriel is a top 5 artist for me. His music means so much to me it's ridiculous.
It's about damn time he releases a new album but I find his music so good that I can just play anything he's put out and I'll be happy.

If he releases a new album, I will be pleased as punch, but I am not counting on it considering it has been 17 years since his last proper studio album of original material.
But like you said, between the early Genesis and his solo records, he has more than enough great stuff to keep this fan happy. :hat

Up has been in my heavy rotation these past few weeks. Signal to Noise is so fuckn' good.

Signal to Noise is definitely great stuff. Up is probably my favorite solo record of his, and has my two favorite PG solo tunes: Sky Blue and I Grieve. Both of those songs are just :hefdaddy :hefdaddy.

Very cool long read on the writing and recording of PG3/Melt in honor of its 40th anniversary.

Edit: And I’m gonna give Melt a listen now.
Edit edit: In the article, Lillywhite is dismissive of And Through The Wire, which does stick out a little bit from the rest of the album environment. But it’s kind of a cool and unique track in its own right. I don’t know how I feel about the cowbell, but PG’s vocals are quite raw and expressive, and I generally find it catchy for lack of a better term.
-
Pretty much all of Melt is great. I wouldn't want to be without any of the songs.
-

I’ve listened to it three times today. It’s definitely (in my opinion) the strongest of the 4 untitled albums (though I also really like Security). I could probably be convinced it’s his best all around solo effort, though I have a very high view of So as well.
-
Security
Us
Car
So
Melt
Scratch
Up
(I could easily switch Scratch and Up, but I'm far more familiar with Scratch so it gets the nod).
-
Pretty much all of Melt is great. I wouldn't want to be without any of the songs.
still one of my favourites by him (thanks to PC as well)

I think Security is slightly better than Melt, but it’s a tougher listen if that makes sense. Those two and Up stand far above all other PG studio albums, IMO.

Listening to Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness talk about Us on their podcast just now. Bowness likes it but Wilson thinks it’s PG’s weakest album (which is obviously wrong, PG 1 and 2 exist). But they both agree it’s too long. Bowness also points to how much better “Quiet Steam” is than “Steam.” Having given it a closer listen just now I have to agree. That’s a really cool track, and I never really cared for Steam anyway.
I do think there is a lot of great stuff on Us, but I see where it suffers a bit from being too high tech (for the time) and also having some filler (gotta take advantage of the CD format!). Not to mention trying to recreate Sledgehammer with Steam. It’s less than 60 minutes, but I don’t think it would hurt to drop some of the filler. The three I’d go without are Steam, Only Us, and Kiss That Frog. But I’d add back Quiet Steam to get it to an even 8 tracks and just over 46 minutes. LP length.
So this was my abridged Us that I came up with:
1. Come Talk to Me
2. Love to be Loved
3. Blood of Eden*
4. Digging in the Dirt*
5. Washing of the Water*
6. Quiet Steam
7. Fourteen Black Paintings
8. Secret World
You have the two more poppy songs to open, then the * songs kind of (to me) have a common theme/story arch of loss/fall>confronting evil/working through your shit>cleansing/recovery. Then you get these two quiet soundscape type tracks before the more upbeat closer. I also think that Come Talk to Me and Secret World are meant to bookend the album as a sort of conflict/resolution thing, so definitely keeping that.
I think all 8 of those tracks are really strong in their own right, and without the filler I do think the album flows better and has a little more impact.
-

What the hell, PG1 is his best one! :lol

I actually like PG 1 better than I used to. Some great songs like Solsbury Hill, Humdrum. But it has this weird 70s movie soundtrack vibe that I don’t like. The best example off the top of my head is the Rocky them song.
-
I really like PGII. It's far from my favorite, but it has that fragility that I haven't found on any other PG album, or many albums by other artists.
-
Huh; big fans of both PG I and US.
- Peter Gabriel IV
- Us
- Peter Gabriel I
- So
- Peter Gabriel III
- Peter Gabriel II
- Up (2002)
- Scratch My Back (2010)
- New Blood (2011)
I love that sound of PG I; I call it the "Ezrin" sound on that. Solsbury Hill is one of my favorite Gabriel tunes ever, and Modern Love is up there too. It's only third because the songs aren't quite as strong as on IV and Us. Blood of Eden is also a strong favorite; the mood and atmosphere of that song is breathtaking to me.
EDIT: I meant to put numbers in; my list is in order, from favorite to least favorite.

It's only third because the songs aren't quite as strong as on IV and Us. Blood of Eden is also a strong favorite; the mood and atmosphere of that song is breathtaking to me.
Don’t get me wrong, I really like Us as well. Blood of Eden is magnificent. Also, along with Digging in the Dirt it sort of answered the question of “what would you say you do here?” that I had for David Rhodes. ;-) Love the guitar work on each.

Us is a funny one for me as I was unfamiliar with most of it until I bought the Secret World Live concert DVD (still one of my favorites), so I got used to a lot of those songs through the live versions, and then many of the studio versions then felt a bit lacking in comparison. Blood of Eden is the one from it where I always go for the studio version, but when it comes to Steam, Come Talk to Me, Washing of the Water, Secret World, Kiss That Frog and Digging in the Dirt, I always go straight for the live versions from Secret World Live.

You know, I came by Us after Secret World Live as well, and I agree the performances are more lively on Secret World Live (which is not all that live as I understand it). I think a big part of that is Paula Cole’s backing vocals, as well as Manu Katche being able to cut loose.

Yes. Manu's performance on Secret World Live is one of my favorite drum performances of all time, and Paula Cole's vocals are god-tier. It's a shame her solo career was so disappointing.

That tour was the only time I've seen Peter live, and it was a hell of a show.
-
Kate Bush did a fine job on the studio version, but that live version of Don't Give Up with Paula Cole is so incredible that it is my go-to version now. She slams it out of the park in that bridge in the middle. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

The time I saw PG live, it was on the Growing UP tour, and his daughter Melanie forgot the words in the middle section. She was trying, but my sister and I were like, "Please, give up!" Fortunately, he had Sevara Nazarkhan come out and do the vocals on In Your Eyes.

Oh, I’d so much rather listen to Paula Cole than Kate Bush (who’s fine in her own quirky way I guess). She also out-sings Sinead O’Conner on Come Talk to Me.
-
I think Ane Brun did a GREAT job on the New Blood version. Her voice is extremely fragile, it sounds beautiful.

I thought his daughter did a nice job on Downside Up. Her voice wasn't OMG amazing, but good enough to work in that song.

Wait, does Sinead sing on that song on Us?? I honestly cannot remember.

Sinead sings on both Come Talk to Me and Blood of Eden on Us. I also thought Melanie Gabriel did a nice job on the Growing Up tour. Her performance of Downside Up (both live and on New Blood) is one of my favorite PG duets.

Gotcha, re: Sinead. Just goes to show how little I listen to the Us record.

I'm the guy who thinks Gabriel never made a bad solo album.

I think the same. Sure, there are some I like more than others, but none of them is "bad".

I don’t know that I would call any of them “bad” either. 1 and 2 are a little hard for me to enjoy, but both have good things about them. I think those were largely PG searching for his voice and style as a solo artist outside of Genesis, and a bit of a necessary trial and error on his way to bigger things with 3 and beyond.

It's my least favourite of his solo albums (still great though) but PG1 must be one of the most eclectic records in my collection. From quirky prog (Moribund) to complex pop-rock (Solisbury) to barbershop quartet (Excuse Me) to an extraordinarily beautiful ballad (Humdrum) to soft jazz (Waiting for the Big One) to weird Wagnerian thundering brass sections married to an even weirder disco-rocker (Down the Dolce Vita) to an iconic hair-raising anthem (Here Comes the Flood). In its way it's every bit as off-the-wall as his previous one with Genesis, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I love its exuberance and sense of total artistic freedom, even if I don't exactly like all the songs.
PG2 I absolutely love though. Such a beautiful, intimate record. It's an album for this very season and I play it a lot during the dark winter months. It's mainly known for On The Air and DIY, but Mother of Violence, White Shadow, Flotsam and Jetsam, Indigo and the sublime Home Sweet Home would easily make my top 20 Gabriel tracks.
PG4 is his masterpiece and a top ten album of all time for me.

PG2: has anyone dug into the "trilogy"? PG2 was done with Robert Fripp, and there was a larger concept of a trio of albums including PG2, Fripp's Exposure, and Daryl Hall's (yes, that Daryl Hall) Sacred Songs. Some songs actually appear on multiple records: Exposure and Here Comes The Flood both appear on Fripp's album, and there are I think four songs that appear on both Exposure and Sacred Songs. It was never sold this way, though, because Hall's management got cold feet and shelved Sacred Songs for a long time, and also prevented most of his vocals from appearing on Fripp's work.

I have PG2 and Exposure (the expanded reissue which includes Hall on some tracks), but I’ve never checked out Sacred Songs. Been meaning to do that for a while.

It's pretty good. You have to sort of leave the notion of "Hall and Oates" on the side, because it's not that at all, and immerse. I love his voice (Fripp has called him the best singer he's ever worked with, and in fact, there was an embryonic band called "Discipline" with Fripp, Levin, Hall and Jerry Marotta that never got off the ground).

Missing the Hall, but it not sounding as I might expect would not be a bad thing in my eyes.

Ha, probably! Seriously though, how weird is it to announce a tour to support a new album but not a release date for the album?
-
I think Ane Brun did a GREAT job on the New Blood version. Her voice is extremely fragile, it sounds beautiful.
No. Horrible beyond belief. (wrong notes too) Check Jennie Abrahamson's version in 2013 and 2014 for reference. His best partner that wasn't Kate.
-
Nice, but when is the album coming out?
according to a recent (September) interview with Manu Katché (who plays on it and on the tour), the plan was to have it released this year. But, given Peter only finished it at the end of October, that may not be feasible anymore. Will be out before the tour starts though.
-
Somehow I already got tickets for my gf and me for Berlin. Waldbühne is beautiful, I can't wait for that concert.
Unfortunately, they were 200€ per ticket and now I have no more money so I guess it's pasta & pesto for the rest of the month.

I'm the guy who thinks Gabriel never made a bad solo album.
yeah me too (possible exception being PG2, but then again, I don't hate that one either)

yeah, saw her on Peter's last tour in 2014. One of the best concerts I ever attended, and I'm very hard to impress. (the original band that did So was on this tour and the entire album was played in the second half, absolutely brilliant)

Saw Growing Up Lve too and Secret World live too before that.
Secret World to me is the best concert I have ever seen.
Will try to get tickets for the upcoming tour on friday.

II might actually be my favorite solo album of his. It's both accessible and eccentric at the same time. That side A is just perfect, every song is fantastic.

Yey..... scored tickets on row 8 in Stockholm for me and 3 friends.

By today's standards, that's not bad at all. I'd be all over a ticket at that price if he came to the States and hit STL.

a comment from the internet...
"Here's what's gonna happen. You're gonna read my newsletter. In that newsletter they'll be a link for a teaser. Watch it with the volume up. Even if it's not for you, you're gonna proceed to the official site. You're gonna give me your email address and I'll notify you when the album's ready. The tour too. You're gonna pump money into both because you're at the age where you really don't have a choice. Will be as good as the old stuff? No. But, and I can't say this strongly enough, you're going to keep quiet about it."

new song tomorrow January 6th, 2023 per the newsletter
Happy New Year to you all! Here we are again, it’s almost the full moon – told you it would be here before we knew it - and we’re back with Part One of our first update of 2023. And it’s a big one…
Friday, 6 January will see the release of the first new song from Peter Gabriel’s forthcoming album i/o. Written and produced by Peter, Panopticom was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London. The track is accompanied by a cover image by the artist David Spriggs (above).
When you open up your preferred digital music platform tomorrow (or today, depending on where you are in the world!), the track will be there for your listening pleasure. We hope you like it.
The first song is based on an idea I have been working on to initiate the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe: The Panopticom. We are beginning to connect a like-minded group of people who might be able to bring this to life, to allow the world to see itself better and understand more of what’s really going on.
Musically, Panopticom drives along powered by the engine-room of long-time collaborators Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché, underpinned by haunting electronics from Brian Eno. Additional backing vocals come from Ríoghnach Connolly of The Breath. The lyric is, in part, inspired by the extraordinary work of three groups, Forensic Architecture, Bellingcat and the Gabriel co-founded pioneering human rights organisation WITNESS.
We’ll be back tomorrow with Part Two, where you’ll find out a bit more about Panopticom and the plans for future releases of new songs, but suffice to say the full moon is going to continue to be at the centre of things...
Happy listening and see you tomorrow.

I really like this track too. Just wish I could listen to the whole album now.
-
I'm digging the new songs. Seeing as so far, both mixes are only out for "Panopticom", I tried listening to both mixes at the same time! I have to say, This Is The Way. Peter's voice doesn't get muddled or accentuated, but the music hits that much harder in some areas, and it's rather grand. The groove really hits. I can't wait for the Bright-Side mix of "The Court" to try it with that song as well. This might be a quadraphonic experience album....

Got a nice Book of love vibe going on and I really love the ending of the track.

Tickets go on general sale on Friday 10 March at 10am Local Time, but by being signed-up to this mailing list you are able to access the
FAN PRESALE today, Tuesday 7 March, from 12NOON EST.
-
Got tickets for Chicago. Fucking stoked! Will be nice to see the full PG production. The only time I saw him was in Dallas with the New Blood production.
-
Was holding out for the album but now I caved inn and bought all songs so far released from Bandcamp.
Really looving them.... great 5 song EP.
Will be seeing him on the 31st of May here i Stockholm. Row 8.... So stoked.
Have seen him thrice before.
- Secret World Live 1993 (best concertI have ever seen)
- Growing Up Live 2003 (amazingly good)
- Back to Front 2014 (really good)
Hoping for another really good concert
-
Had been trying to wait for the album as well, but did hear another of the new songs the other night and really liked it. Do we even have a release date yet?
-
Seeing the concert in Stockholm tomorrow. So exited...
Has anyone here seen it yet?
-
It was a totally amazing show..... I wrote about it in the Concerts 2023 thread.
Anyway, today is a full moon.... new PG song, Road to Joy, heard it live on wednesday and it was good. Now I can lsten to it again and again.
-
Seeing him in September!!
-
Had been trying to wait for the album as well, but did hear another of the new songs the other night and really liked it. Do we even have a release date yet?
He's releasing it track by track, one a month to coincide with each new moon (and on the half moon he releases a different mix of the track. Bit of an oddball is our Pete). We're 6 tracks in now, about halfway through, so the full thing should be released at the end of the year or thereabouts.
-
I am long overdue for a PG binge, but I will wait till this whole album is out to check out the songs and go down that rabbit hole.

You have a lot of good stuff to look forward to.
I think I have heard the full album live (or at least 11 songs) and six of the songs in studio versions.
It will be a great record.
-
I'm really digging Road to Joy. It is eerily close to Kiss That Frog but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
So fun to drive to.

Anybody want to give a brief rundown of the differences between the Light Side and Dark Side mixes?
I finally decided to download a few with some free download credits I had that were going to expire but I can't listen to them because I'm getting over a ruptured ear drum. Hopefully within the week I can listen and compare

Sorry to hear about your ear problems... hope you get well soon.
I have decided to only buy/listen to the first released version of each song so I can't compare.
But here are some of Peter Gabriels words about the mixes.
My guess is that when the physical version/s are released both mixes will be available. So I'm holding out with getting the second mix until then.
“I’m lucky to have two of the world’s best mix engineers: Tchad Blake and Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, working with me on the music from ‘i/o,'” said Gabriel in a message to members of his Full Moon Club. “Rather than choosing only one of their mixes to release, I have decided that people should be able to hear all the great work that they are both doing.”
...
"I intend to ask them to mix each month’s song, with Spike’s mixes being called the ‘Bright-Side’ and Tchad’s the ‘Dark-Side,’ added Gabriel. “Whether you hear the ‘Bright-Side’ or the ‘Dark-Side’ first will vary each full moon, depending on the order we decide to release them. I know this amount of detail is not for everyone, but I hope those that are into their music production will enjoy their different interpretations.”

Interesting. Thanks!
I don't blame you for not buying both. I only did so because I have the free credits. I'm actually against downloading (legally and illegally) but will do so if I only have no other choice and usually wait until I build up amazon no rush shipping credits.
-
I'm hoping for an artbook of the album with extra content. I would like to have some content unheard before I get it.
So that is the reason I only buy one of the mixes.
Buying them on Bandcamp I believe PG gets quite a good share so I have no qualms buying digitall downloads.

This is one of the strangest release cycles of any artist. Then again, Peter Gabriel is one of the most unusual recording artists of the last 50 years so I guess it's fitting.
I also just noticed he's releasing all of his songs with an "In-side Mix"

Well.... he will get me to buy it twice and quite possibly a lot of others.
Buying the songs digitally as soon as they are released and I eill buy the physical album as well once it's released.
Hoping for a nice art-book of this as it's looking to become album of the year for me.

So far I love what I'm hearing. I never dove to deep into PG to be honest. I bought all the albums about 5 years ago and have mainly listened to the hits. Maybe this'll encourage me to actually dig into the albums more.
But I agree. Would love some type of deluxe package.

"US", is, to me, one of the most immersive records I own. It didn't make my top ten list, but it is always a solid, solid listen.

this is almost over stimulation in some ways, layer upon layer. Totally Gabriel though in that sense, and the social commentary of course.

Holy shit what a crazy video. I can't even fathom the amount of time it took to create that.
-
One of those videos you could watch 100 times and still see something new every time because there's so much going on. But honestly, I don't think I'd watch it more than once or twice because it's really disturbing. Impressive as hell, though.
-
Peter Gabriel!!!!!!!
What a video.... hope it's on the upcoming artbook that I hope for

Yeah, that video totally turned me around on the song too. For some reason, Panopticom never resonated with me. I am coming around on it now. It's funny to me thinking back on PG's catalogue and how many times I've listened to a track and didn't care for it at first and then with time and patience, those same tracks wound up being my favorites.
That video is fucking cool.
-
Amazing video! Also continues with the completely odd and nonsensical path to releasing the album.
Release a single and then a bunch others. Then come back and release a video for the first single. Then go on tour. At some point, release the album.

he's releasing a new song from the record every full moon, and every new moon there is a dark side mix of the previous song. presumably he'll be done by the time the tour starts

That's two weeks from now and still no official word when the full physical album will be released

The tour started long ago after just 4 songs were released.

Absolutely breathtaking

peter gabriel's music found me at a time when i was lost and struggling. his tunes reached into me in a way nothing else could. they soothed me when i felt alone and got me when no one else did. his music gave me a reason to fight, to keep on, and to trust in better times. even now, when i'm low, his melodies wrap me up, all warm and snug.
and guess what? soon, i'll see him live! i can't wait for that moment, to be in the same space, to maybe shake his hand. it's like a dream taking shape.
anyway, sending good vibes to all. cherish his music, friends. it's got true magic. :hefdaddy

Him, Robert Plant & Paul Simon stretched boundaries in music. It was everything I was searching for musically. I admired them so much.
And in 2 plus weeks, I'm seeing Peter Gabriel. Can't wait.

Holy shit I really screwed up the original quotes. Anyway, my response lost in that mess was "That's two weeks from now and still no official word when the full physical album will be released"
That's what I get for posting on a phone. I actually hate these things

That's awesome. I've never had a band that did that for me in the way you described. Bands that helped me through tough times just provided awesome music for me to obsess over to take my mind off things.
Had I fallen in love with Gabriel's music earlier, I could see maybe having a similar experience.
Genesis/Gabriel/Collins is special for my wife and I because we truly kind of fell in love with the music together about 10 years ago.

hey, i totally get what you're saying! peter gabriel's music has this way of reaching deep inside, ya know? it's like a lifeline when things are rough. his tunes just connect on a whole different level. i remember those times when i was down and out, and his melodies were like a friend. they kinda wrap around you and make you feel less alone. so awesome that you're gonna see him live soon! that's like the ultimate experience – sharing the same space with the artist who's been there for you. sending good vibes right back at ya. his music's pure magic, no doubt about it. 🎶 :metal

that's really beautiful, madman shepherd. it's amazing how music can impact people in such different ways. it's fantastic that you and your wife share a connection through genesis/gabriel/collins. i wish my ex-wife had appreciated gabriel in the same way, but unfortunately, she was more into midwestern emo. still, music has this uncanny ability to bring people together and create meaningful moments, sometimes.

My wife and I have very different tastes but there is some crossover. She likes Dream Theater, Ghost, and a variety of others and will come with me to shows. I made the mistake of bringing her to Dark Funeral and Venom Inc. which will not happen again.
With Genesis, I got Invisible Touch on a whim...I think because I had heard Disturbed's version of Land of Confusion and made me think of seeing the video on repeat in the 80s and liking the song I Can't Dance as a kid. I wasn't expecting to love Invisible Touch but I did. Slowly I got the rest of the albums and it was so cool to be able to tell my wife, "Hey, I finally got one of the Peter Gabriel era albums" and listening to it and discussing how bizarre it was, even a little off putting, and then humming a part we remembered and going back and listening to it until an obsession grew. I started reading biographies and telling her the stories behind the albums. She has a knack for hearing lyrics perfectly and remembering them and we would analyze what they meant. I guess I forgot to mention we used to go on looooooooooooooong road trips to Alaska, Newfoundland, and everywhere in between so we had a ton of material to fill the time.
We would even get in debates about which singer sang what better. For the record, I think Phil does I Know What I Like better and I even gotta say I almost like Ray Wilson's Carpet Crawlers better than the other two. Even though Phil is amazing on Supper's Ready, nothing can top Gabriel on that one.
When we finally got to see Genesis 2 years ago and from 10th row at that, it was pretty emotional. Sure Phil wasn't at his best but the rest of the band was still amazing. My son was a few months away from being born so technically we can say Genesis was his first concert!

The latest issue of the UK's MOJO magazine has an update on Peter Gabriel's plans. In December, i/o will be released as a "real" (physical) album. Until then, all twelve tracks of the album will be available digitally. It is not yet known which formats will be available. However, the article suggests that all mixes will also be released physically, i.e. all songs in the bright-side mix, dark-side mix and in-side mix. Even though the article dowsn't say anything about the specific release date, we think December 1st is the most likely release date.

What a mess. Such a weird way to put an album out.

Right? I'm going to buy the physical, but which mix is this initial release? It's confusing.
-
This album is constantly being talked about. For over a year now! So I guess Peter is doing something right.

He is getting me and I guess quite a few with me to buy the digital releases and then splurge for a nice physical release as well.
So yeah.... it's working out for him I'm sure
-
The latest PG newsletter said the physical release will be in December, that's all he said.
-
saw PG in Denver last night!! my third time seeing him. great show!

I saw him in Chicago and it was probably a Top 5 all time show for me. Almost a perfect night.

Man, I LOVE me some Gabriel, but the whole 'two mixes' thing has really jammed me up.
Why not just pick the version you think best represents the song?
It's such a barrier to entry for me, bc my OCD nature means I will likely want to invest hours listening to each version back and forth in order to compare and understand the differences.
:yeahright
-
I'll probably just get the 2 CD and Bluray version.

-
I so want to get the deluxe boxset because the art projections were gorgeous during the I/O songs in this tour.
-
Well, I checked the links and there are three different mixes, none of which appear to be the official mix, is that right?
-
So there are 3 mixes from the looks of it, the 2 CDs are the Bright-side and Dark-side mixes and the Blu-ray has the In-side mixes. That is the lot of them right?
-

Oh, I feel dumb for thinking “Bright-side” was the name of the guy who mixed it, and that those were alternate mixes. So still, there are 3 mixes and I guess I will end up splurging for the set with all 3, but not sure.
-
Seems like the in-side mix is the Atmos mix
This is the 2CD+Blu-ray release, featuring both the Bright-Side and Dark-Side stereo mixes across two CDs as well as a Blu-ray with the In-Side Mix (Dolby Atmos). The Blu-ray also contains the 24/96 hi-res stereo Bright-Side and Dark-Side mixes.
The three discs come in an 8panel digi-pack, with obi-strip and 32page booklet.

Oh, I have no use for an Atmos mix, so that’s good. I can avoid that one altogether then.
Holy crap! He wants $20.48 USD for shipping for the 2 CD digipack through Bandcamp. I’ll wait for Amazon, LOL.
-
Check Burning Shed and see if you can get a better deal on the shipping. I'm also waiting for an Amazon pre-order since I think I'll splurge for the boxset.

That's around 13$ cheaper that the PG store. Going to try canceling that order to get from Burning Shed.
-
Anyone hitting one of the remaining PG shows?
-
Got my shipping email from burning shed today, a little earlier than expected, I was thinking that the CD/Blu-ray was shipping in Jan of next year.
-
Despite being told it would be delayed until tomorrow, I got my CD this afternoon. Sounds really good so far! There is no way PG did these vocal tracks within the last 10 years though, right? Sounds like Us era vocals. He was much deeper on Scratch My Back and New Blood.
-
well much of it was written before UP even came out, but whether the vocal recordings on the final mixes were done then? I dunno. I must admit, I didn't watch all of the videos he sent out throughout the year, which maybe he talked about.
otherwise, I wonder if there's a lot about that on the Bluray/DVD.
-
I don't believe the Blu-ray has any making of videos. It has only the tracks with the 3 mixes. Might listen to this today on streaming, still don't have my order.

I didn't watch those videos either, LOL. And I also avoided most of the songs, which I'm glad about because this is all fresh and interesting to listen to now.
-
On about my fourth listen, and I'm getting fewer "this sounds like a young PG vibes" from the vocals. Different songs may have different aged tracks though.
Really great listen, though I'm bouncing back and forth between the Light and Dark-side mixes and not sure which I prefer yet. Realizing this is the first new PG studio album I've heard upon release since I first got into him 21 years ago when I picked up Up on Mike Portnoy's recommendation (pretty sure that was over Thanksgiving, so right about the same time of year).
-
it's quite good. i think it's earned a place in my top 10 of 2023
i also got into Peter Gabriel around the same time, been a huge fan of him for so long now!
-
Tony Levin on "Road to Joy." So good.
-
Indeed!!

I am stunned by Gabriel's latest (and last?) album.
I’ve listened to the new Gabriel a total of seven times in the last day… I’ll save my thoughts on the triple mix nonsense, but regardless of which you choose, this is a ridiculously good album.
For something he reportedly spent 20 years tinkering with, I/O is remarkably concise and focused.
Also, his voice sounds is really good form. Brilliant lyrics, and quite possibly the best mastering I’ve heard in a modern ‘a-list’ album in a long, long time.
The songs are a cross between ‘so’ and ‘up,’ which is a refreshingly accessible mix of ‘pop’ and electronics-tinged prog.
I can’t think of the last time an album exceeded my expectations like this.
I’m totally eating my words on the mixes too, bc I’ve listened to both.
-
Yeah, I've been alternating mixes on listens, and I'm not sure if that's a mistake or not because I'm a little mixed up on what some songs sound like. The Dark side mix seems a little more electronic and ambient? The Light side seems a bit cleaner and more open. Not even sure if there are differences in instrumentation because I'm not totally familiar with what is what yet. But I am enjoying both.
-
Seeing at least 8 songs live on this tour, they were so good live.
I can say easily, I'm a fan of the Dark mix.
-
It’s a toss-up for me on most songs, but where it matters (like the snare on the title track), I give a slight edge to the bright side mix.
That said, I suspect I will eventually prefer a mix of the two, depending on the song.
I want to be annoyed at Gabriel, but the quality here transcends any minor qualms or nitpicking I may have.
-
I'm looking forward to this, but I am almost dreading the two versions and trying to figure out which is better. I'll likely just listen to the bright side version for a while first before trying the dark.
-
Dark side is the way to go, Kev.
-
"And Still" is so beautiful. Knowing that it's about his mother who passed away in 2016.

“Playing for Time” is the one that’s hit me the hardest so far. Kind of wish it was the album closer. Will have to give “And Still” a closer listen knowing what it’s about.
-
does anyone else hear what sounds like a People Get Ready interpolation (tho it might not be, i'm uncertain) in the last tune? specifically the verse melodies

Mine just arrived yesterday (yes, Sunday) and I will be listening this week.

I'm still awaying my 2CD × BR bought from Real World bandcamp.
I saw him live back in may and bought the first released mix of the songs that were available two weeks before the concert. Have bought the rest on fullmoon.
It's a mix of bright and dark side mixes. So will be interresting to see how this will effect my enjoyment.
I'm still totally in love with the album and can't wait to get the physical release.
-
My wife popped the red disc in last weekend. She said what mix it was but I've since forgotten. Sounded great. Going to need to spend some time with all three to work out preferences.
-

Playing for Time is wonderful. That ending!!
-
I'm just a casual Peter Gabriel fan at best, and am pretty picky about new music that isn't one of my favorite artists... That said, I listened to the entire new album by Peter Gabriel and really enjoyed it! Looking forward to some repeated listens. My initial favorite song is i/o (granted I've only listened to the album once yet).
-
Having only heard the first track a couple of times, I dove into the whole album yesterday. Holy crap the entire album is amazing. the back to back sequence of Playing For Time and i/o is fantastic. Such great tunes in here.
I've only heard the bright-side mix, will get used to that before listening to anything else.
-
I personally like the dark mix more but you can't go wrong with either.
-
Playing for Time really is the standout track here, though Four Kinds of Horses has legs too. ;)

I’d say about 16 of them.
-
I actually haven't heard the Dark Side mix yet. Do they differ much?

I would say the Dark side has a "Warmth" to it. Where the bright side is a "Crisp" sound.

I'd say the differences between both mixes are incredibly subtle, and only become pronounced once you are incredibly familiar with the songs.
That said, overall, I like the way the snare sits in the mix more consistently on the Bright Side mix (there's a ring to it that I love that feels muted on the Dark Side). For this reason, I prefer the Bright Side for the more upbeat songs (like "I/O, and "Road to Joy")
The Dark Side mix, however, seems to be my preference for some of the more somber, pensive moments.
So, a mix of the two is really my preference, but if I had to choose, I'd say I prefer the Bright Side mix (by a hair).
-
This is an oversimplification, but I kind of feel like the difference between the Bright and Dark-Side mixes is kind of like the difference between Us and Up. Not that extreme, but Us had a more open, natural sound to it, while Up was a bit thicker, with a more compressed sound.
I just gave the Dark Side a listen for the first time in over a week, and I thought I heard some new subtleties with the instrumentation on The Court, but now I need to go back to the other mix and confirm.
-

:tup
-
I have not examined it closely but I feel that the Dark Side mix is a bit brighter and the Brightside is a bit darker. I'm actually kind of serious. I listened to each when only one song was released and without looking, I thought "oh this must be the brightside mix" when it wasn't. Same with the other way around. Of course the difference is almost negligible
-
Hah, that's funny but I bet having that pre-conceived idea of which is supposed to be bright/dark does color the way you hear each of them.
-
I’m not a PG fan per se but I liked Sledgehammer and the album Up.
This album is some sonic excellence. Good songs too. I’m quite partial to Panopticom and Four Kinds of Horses, but I just heard the bright-side mix of And Still for the first time and that song really got to me.
The two different mixes is badass. I love to get so much insight into the choices one could make and how that impacts the song. Not sure which I prefer. Love the forwardness and crisp sound of bright, but the dark mix sounds more real and dirty. It’s awesome that they did this. Both mixes are great!!
-
Think I prefer the bright over the dark although the dark has it's moments too. I really wish the lyrics were included with the CDs. I know they are on his website but it's really not the same.
-
I'm pretty firmly in the Bright-Side camp now. The Dark-Side is interesting but I don't think I prefer any of those mixes.

Sheryl..of course her relationship with Kevin Gilbert makes this even a little more ironic per Kevin's admiration and appreciation for Peter, even covering Solsbury Hill at 1 point.

Interesting. Did they just mix in PG's original vocal tracks from Us, or did he re-cut this?
On the Gilbert point, he did famously say "I think Peter Gabriel was a brilliant artist until he underwent EST training." Which I've never totally understood what he meant, but I figure based on the timeline he might not have been a fan of Digging in the Dirt so much!
-
Sounds like a new vocal per a Rolling Stone article. It's pretty much like the original, so it's pretty good. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/sheryl-crow-peter-gabriel-digging-in-the-dirt-1234983679/amp/

The reference you're making amongst Kevin's "bio" should be taken with a huge grain of salt per what he said was amongst something he submitted that much of was derived from an article from The New Yorker which he explained on an appearance on the Mark and Brian show (36 mins in):
https://youtu.be/OSXh4QiGNMg?t=2190
interestingly tho, I've been thinking about that bio (https://neweraartist.wordpress.com/2007/04/30/from-my-personal-archives-a-tribute-to-kevin-gilbert/), and how at some point, he might have used it for something else he would do. A concept album or something, per it's pretty absurd, but also super crazy and almost creative in some ways. like an Aesop's Fables or Big Fish kind of thing.

the new sheryl duet is awesome
