Title: Bizarre music genres
Post by: Zydar on September 17, 2010, 05:54:13 AM
We've talked about weird sub-genres before (post-ironic beardcore comes to mind) and here are a few others I haven't heard before, besides crabcore.

Blackened Death Metal
Cuddlecore
Cowpunk
Crabcore
Dream Pop
Folktronica
Gypsy Punk
Nintendocore
Wizard Rock (or Wrock)
Yacht Rock

What is this I don't even

What odd genres/sub-genres have you come across? Any you can actually recommend?

Shoegaze is the best them.

Based solely on the Prize Fighter Inferno's "My Brother's Blood Machine" and Kaki King's "Dreaming of Revenge" (she wasn't really folktronica, but she was mentioned in the UG article and there were some beats), I would recommend folktronica.

The idea of "Christian Black Metal" is pretty bizarre.  It reminds me of the "Jews for Jesus" oxymoron.

Genres you made up in your bedroom don't count.

I believe 'wizard rock' is also known as Dumble-core.
:rollin :rollin :rollin

After playing Half Life 1 again, me and my friend have decided to do a concept album on it, with the genre being named after an area call "The Lambda Core". :neverusethis:

I don't see what's odd about blackened death metal, dream pop, folktronica and Nintendocore, though only because I'm actually familiar with them. The others I haven't heard (except crabcore, which is not an actual genre and was only a joke applied to Attack Attack!. I hope).

This is something that gets debated quite a bit. Its odd considering Black Metal started as a mostly anti-christian movement, but it doesn't change that black metal has a defined aesthetic and religious beliefs do not play a part in deciding if your sound meets that aesthetic. But yes, Christian Black Metal/Unblack Metal (Another terms used for it) is pretty wacky. And I haven't really heard anything decent from it.

I stumbled on a Wikipedia article a while back for the genre "shitgaze"... it's been deleted, but remnants can still be seen here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shitgaze
The original article tried to say that "shitgaze" gained popularity as a legitimate subgenre of shoegaze.

I think one of the most bizarre genres is "crabcore", but not for the reasons UG.com gave. When I listened to an Attack Attack song, it was a weird mix of metalcore, electronic dance music, soppy rock balladry, screamo vocals, autotune... such a weird combination of styles. Whereas something like Blackened Death Metal is a fairly straight-forward blending of death metal and black metal, two already relatively interlinked subgenres. Maybe I am missing the point here, but in reality a band like Behemoth is hardly anywhere near as bizarre as a band like Attack Attack.

Someone clearly doesn't watch Behemoth's music videos.

Oh, well if you want to go by the bands image and symbolism/occultness of it all, then sure Behemoth are more out there than most. :lol But I was looking at this from a purely musical point of view.

Avant-garde metal is pretty weird, at least it was in the one avant-garde band I've seen.

You have NSBM so its only natural to have Jew-core to balance things out.

I know the band Abney Park was referred to as 'steam punk' somewhere, which was always odd to me.

Lyrically, yes they are steam punk (I guess), what with songs about airship pirates and all that, but musically they just sound like an indie band.

Steampunk in terms of music is more in reference to a band's lyrics and visuals than any kind of musical traits.

Unless it's some sort of Western/Industrial hybrid.

I know Dr. Steel is considered one of the most famous "steampunk" artists. As far as his actual music goes, it's been referred to as "Industrial Hip-Hop Opera". Personally I'd describe him as the result of an orgy between Mike Patton, Danny Elfman and Pee Wee Herman

Shouldn't a genera be defined by what the music sounds like? Same reasons I think Shoegaze is a really stupid name for a genera.

1) Hence why I wouldn't consider steampunk to be a genre of music usually, it's just an aesthetic/style that some bands grab on to, regardless of their music.

2) Shoegaze is a genre defined by the sound.

What would you call shoegaze then? It sounds silly at first, but I can't really think of a better name for it.
