Title: Your Top 5 Songs of All Time
Post by: juice on September 05, 2010, 04:27:53 PM
I didn't see any sort of thread like this and I thought it would be interesting to see people's favorite songs.  I'll have to get back to this thread later and post mine.

2. Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere but Not Here
3. Alter Bridge - Blackbird (AB are great, but this is their best song by far. Seeing them live in a few months!)

I could never choose my top 5 favorites, but my top 5 played according to last.fm:

1. Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
2. CunninLynguists - Nothing To Give
3. Tom Waits - Alice
4. 65daysofstatic - Radio Protector
5. Bjork - Play Dead

Pain of Salvation's Used would be on my list, and Tom Wait's Alice as well. A Jeff Buckley song perhaps, but not Last Goodbye... maybe Lover, You Should've Come Over.

Nice choice for Tom Waits. The only albums I know by heart are 'Alice' and 'Blood Money'. I really like the song 'Poor Edward' as well.

1. ACOS - Hands down the best piece of music I have ever experienced

2. Catch the Rainbow - Off of the "Live on Stage" LP

3. Achilles Last Stand - all you have to do is listen to the multiple guitar tracks to understand the studio Master that is James Patrick Page... "And the mighty arms of Atlas.. hold the heavans from the earth!!"

4. Idioglossia - just an incredible arrangement and performance... I never get tired of it.

5. Far Beyond The Sun - You like blazing guitar?

The Flower Kings - "Garden of Dreams" (although this feels like cheating :p)
Radiohead - "How to Disappear Completely"
Pink Floyd - "Time"
Porcupine Tree - "Lightbulb Sun"

And if it were considered a single song, the medley from Side 2 of the Beatles' Abbey Road would definitely be up there. :coolio

I'm using the one song per band rule to make this easy. No ranking either just 5 songs I like more than any others.

Avenged Sevenfold - Save Me
Between The Buried & Me - Swim To The Moon
Coheed & Cambria - The Crowing
Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (I flipped a coin on this one against Lines In The Sand)
Guns N Roses - Coma

1.Björk - Anchor Song
Because it sounds so isolated and lonely.

2. Modest Mouse - Bukowski
Because it is a song with a lot of thought going on, the sort of thoughts that one can only have while downtrodden and alone.

3. Porcupine Tree - Heartattack in a Layby
It truly can't be described. You have to take it as you will on your own.

4. My Morning Jacket - I Will Sing You Songs
Because it is beautiful and...well...sad.

5. Chroma Key - Sad, Sad Movie
Because the music is simple but amazing, accompanied by lyrics of regret and sadness.

Comfortably Numb (Delicate Sound of Thunder) - Pink Floyd. I might have heard The Wall track first on the radio but I owned this album first, so it became the default version for me. As I was new to this genre, I wasn't used to songs lasting more than 4 minutes, or having such an extended guitar part. Someone asked Guy Pratt if playing this with David so many times over the years it ever became just another song. He said "nope, when the solo starts, I still get goosebumps."

2112 - Rush. I've said elsewhere (but cannot find to quote myself) a friend in high school told me to listen to this song. I'd never seen a song this long before. But he was usually spot on in recommending me stuff. After it was over, I had no idea what the hell I just listened to. But it was the most amazing thing I'd ever heard. In some respects it still is. One of my gateway songs in to my love for 70s/classic rock.

Sloop John B - The Beach Boys. No real good story here, but I came to love it during what was indeed the worst trip I'd ever been on. Internet says "Brian Wilson hired 13 musicians to record this song during a 12a-3a session on July 12, 1965."

Don’t Follow - Alice in Chains. Was never a grunge guy, which made me a bit of an oddball in high school growing up in the heart of it. But this song moves me more than almost any other to this day.

Gethsemane (I Only Want To Say) - Jesus Christ Superstar (1970). This was the most mind-blowing vocal performance I had ever heard at the time. The whole album, between Gillan and Murray Head, was just an onslaught of vocal ass-kicking. I know many other have tried to hit those notes, some may have even done it better. But this recording is still tops in my book.

Tough... well, here's five I could come up with, in no particular order...
Rush - "La Villa Strangiato"
The Flower Kings - "Stardust We Are"
Dream Theater - "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence"
Transatlantic - "Stranger In Your Soul", "The Whirlwind"

REALLY hard to narrow it down to five... maybe 5 from each of my top 5 or 10 bands, but never 5, period.

-Marc.

Oh wow, I didn't realize this was a DECADE-OLD THREAD, but seeing my first reply in this thread really brings me back. My top five bands now are a bit different than they were back then, especially after discovering Big Big Train and getting really deep into The Tangent and Haken and several other bands since then.

I think it might be even HARDER to decide just five songs, but I think a couple of those songs would still be in my Top Five, like "Stranger In Your Soul" or "The Whirlwind", and probably "La Villa Strangiato" as well. Big Big Train's "A Mead Hall In Winter" is one of my favorite BBT songs so that might make the list, and "Visions" by Haken is up there as well.

As much as I love DT and have loved their music over the years, I'm not sure I could pick any one single song that would make my Top Five, if I had to pick five now, but SDOIT would be close. I just haven't been into DT as much in the last few years, despite how good D/T was, I just don't give them the attention I used to, same with Rush. They were my first two favorite bands when I was getting into prog, but I think I kind of overplayed them and they've had their time in the sun for me.

-Marc.

Yeah, it is kind of funny to look at my top 5 from 10 years ago as well.

Rush - "2112"
The Flower Kings - "Garden of Dreams" (although this feels like cheating :p)
Radiohead - "How to Disappear Completely"
Pink Floyd - "Time"
Porcupine Tree - "Lightbulb Sun"

And if it were considered a single song, the medley from Side 2 of the Beatles' Abbey Road would definitely be up there. :coolio

2112 is still my favorite song, but I am not sure any of the others would make it now.

I am past that "Garden of Dreams is one song" phase, so I cannot cheat now and include it.

How to Disappear Completely would still be up there pretty high, but not quite top 5.

Mother is once again my favorite Floyd song instead of Time, and no artist is getting two songs in the top 5, so Time is out (but would still be way up there).

Lightbulb Sun is probably not my favorite PT song at this juncture.  That honor now goes to Don't Hate Me, which would contend for the top 5.

Title: Re: Your Top 5 Songs of All Time

My true Top 5 contains some stuff that I'd rather keep secret for the time being, so for now I'll list the three non-secret stuff and then list off some honorable mentions that I love and are at least deserving of any Top 5 list.

1. Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
2. Dream Theater - Octavarium
3. [DATA EXPUNGED]
4. [DATA EXPUNGED]
5. Dream Theater - The Count of Tuscany

Honorable mentions:
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
Porcupine Tree - The Start of Something Beautiful
Porcupine Tree - Glass Arm Shattering
Transatlantic - The Whirlwind
Transatlantic - Duel with the Devil
Haken - Visions
Between the Buried and Me - Silent Flight Parliament
Xenoblade Chronicles OST - The God-Slaying Sword

If I were to do this with a "one song per artist" rule, I'd use the bands listed in the Honorable Mentions section, probably prioritizing Anesthetize for PT and The Whirlwind for TA. So removing the [DATA EXPUNGED] stuff, that kind of list would be something like this:

1. Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
2. Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
3. Transatlantic - The Whirlwind
4. Haken - Visions
5. Between the Buried and Me - Silent Flight Parliament

And yeah, Dream Theater's greatest stuff truly does make up a lot of my favorite songs ever made. If I made a Top 50, Dream Theater would probably have at least 15 songs on that list. Some honorable mentions I'd give for Dream Theater would include Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Illumination Theory, and The Best of Times, among others.

Oh wow, I didn't realize this was a DECADE-OLD THREAD...

I was randomly thinking of my top 5 songs, considered making a thread, then did a search and found this one.

Thinking about my favorite bands, DT doesn't have what I would consider an all-time top favorite song, same goes for The Who, and Floyd (aside from the one I mentioned), and Maiden. For those I guess I prefer the whole body of work, though it is a little strange none of them have a stand-out song for me. Conversely, based on my list, I am only a moderate Rush fan, appreciate but never listen to The Beach Boys or Alice in Chains.

I’m fairly certain I couldn’t even do a top 5 songs ever if I wanted to. There’s way too much good stuff to choose from. If I had to make an all-time favourites list I have a bunch of songs I know would go on there, I think, but limiting myself to five would be impossible, if not a bit silly anyway.

Yea, I mean this is a pretty impossible task but fuck it, this looks good enough:

2. Call of Ktulu - Metallica
3. Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria
4. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End - The Beatles
5. Let's Hang the Landlord - The King Blues

The Honourable Mentions list could go on forever, but these are some of the songs that sprang to mind:

A Night on the Town - The Dear Hunter
Visions - Haken

Probably can’t be done justice off the top of my head, so I’ll just say this is only one of many potential top 5s:

Big Big Train - Victorian Brickwork
Marillion - Gazpacho (maybe Afraid of Sunlight, Fantastic Place, or Easter)
The Blue Nile - Over the Hillside
Transatlantic - Duel with the Devil

Some candidates for number 5:

Rush - Bravado or Available Light
Genesis - Cinema Show or Supper’s Ready
Dream Theater - 6:00
Kip Winger - Resurrection
Talk Talk - Wealth
King Crimson - Starless
Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes or Red Rain

Well, shoot, that’s not 5 is it...

Paradise City and Estranged by Guns N' Roses

Gotta love a 10 year bump!

As other are saying, this is really an impossible task. But here's just an attempt at it.

1. Dream Theater - Learning to Live
2. Coldplay - Midnight
3. Transatlantic - The Whirlwind
4. Nightwish - Ghost Love Score
5. Iron Maiden - Paschendale

There are some songs I've gotten into more recently that could be possible competitors, but I kind of think to give a song this elite of a place, I want to have known and loved it for it a while.

I sort of surprised myself by choosing Learning to Live. I had Breaking All Illusions as my favorite DT song for many years, but I think LtL has reclaimed the crown in the past year or two.

I probably couldn't ever hope to do a definitive list, but I'll give it a shot and just list a few, cause why not.

Robert Wyatt - Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road
Yes - Close to the Edge
Nick Drake - Things Behind the Sun
King Crimson - Starless
David Bowie - Station to Station

Honorable mentions:
Harmonium - Histoires sans paroles
Talking Heads - Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Sleep
The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini
Pink Floyd - Echoes
Slowdive - Alison

These will be in no particular order

Marillion - Neverland
Rush - Xanadu
Tool - Lateralus
Anathema - Untouchable
Agalloch - Falling Snow

I've tried to do this 3 times since seeing the thread and had to give up each time, it's just too tough - certainly when limiting it to 1 song per artist, otherwise it's mostly DT songs  :lol

All I know for definite is my top 2 would be:

1. Dream Theater - Learning to Live
2. Muse - New Born

I'll probably have another think about it the next time I see the thread!

Marillion- Sugarmice
Yes- Rituals
Dream Theater- Six Degrees

The Kinks- Celluloid Heroes

HM to Pete Townshend's Let My Love Open The Door

Two good calls!   :)

This is way too hard, and I volley between "alltime objective" and "just my personal faves".

All time:
1. Good Vibrations
2. Me And Bobby McGee
3. A Day In The Life
4. The Rain Song
5. Gimme Shelter

Mine:
1. Tonight (Ozzy)
2. Ten Years Gone (Zeppelin)
3. Turn Of The Century (Yes)
4. Cinderella Search (Marillion)
5. La Villa Strangiato (Rush)

I'm leaving literally HUNDREDS of songs off this list; Seasons Of Wither, Aerosmith.   Spiral Architect, Sabbath.  Evidence Of Autum, Genesis.   Supernatural, Neal Morse.   Terrapin Station, Grateful Dead.

It's funny because I could make an argument for Fire On The Mountain being in my top 5 of all time despite rarely listening to it, because of the circumstances surrounding why I love it and when I first heard it. So there's definitely dozens if not hundreds of songs that could be in mine for sure.

Honestly I think Africa and Rosanna and Estranged are the only 3 'locks' in my top 5

Floyd- Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Floyd - Dogs

Yes - Awaken

5 sucks because I have to omit at least 50.

Genesis - Down And Out

Impossible, but I think I'd have to think about it in terms of what has influenced me the most during all these years and not just post the top 5 songs right now.

Iron Maiden - Caught Somewhere in Time
Metallica - Seek and Destroy
Manowar - Hail and Kill
Megadeth - Holy Wars
Dream Theater - Metropolis

The first four represent my entrance into metal music and those bands were pretty much the only thing I listened to during the first year or so. Dream Theater came much later, only after I had checked out almost every other metal genre there was. But it was something in Metropolis and later Pull me Under that got me into buying their whole discography. A little bit later, I had the same experience with Muse and if this was top 6 songs of all time nr 6 would probably be a Muse song.

Funny thing is that I listen to A SHITLOAD of extreme metal and didn't really pay attention to these classic bands or progressive metal for that matter for a long time. Yet not one of those black/death metal bands were as influential for me as those listed above. Maybe Emperor from Norway would be close. Or something like Slayer, I don't know.

I'm tempted to do a 'off the top of my head, this is what I come up with', but I already know I wouldn't agree with it tomorrow, simply because I don't really subscribe to the idea that you can think of 1 (or 5, or 10) songs as 'better' or 'more favourite' than the others. It's dependent on the day, my mood, what I'm doing, etc.

I'd imagine at least 80% of the people who have posted so far are in the same boat! Just winging it and going with 5 songs, that could well change come the following day.

I'd be very surprised if many people could commit to 5 songs, knowing they wouldn't change their mind.

Metallica - Seek and Destroy

As a big Metallica fan,  I've gotta say, I don't get the love for this song. I find the chorus kind of annoying and everytime I've seen them live I just had my fingers crossed they wouldn't play it. If I was to pick a song off Kill Em All it'd be The Four Horsemen, hands down.

This is really hard.  But I will try.

5. "Wind at my Back" and "June" (tie) Spock's Beard
4. "Stranger In Your Soul" - Transatlantic
3. "2112: Overture / The Temples of Syrinx / Discovery / Presentation / Oracle: The Dream" - Rush
2. "Magnum Opus: Father Padilla Meets the Perfect Gnat / Howling at the Moon / Man Overboard / Industry on Parade / Release the Beavers / Gnat Attack" - Kansas
1. "The Spirit Carries On" - Dream Theater

No doubt there are numerous options to round this out but those were the ones the immediately came to mind.

It's funny you mention this. The first 5 tracks of that album, when listened to all at once, never fail to move me to tears at some point. The pure raw emotion in the lyrics, and the way they are sung, and music is among the best I've ever heard in my life.

I've learned the hard way not to listen to this album in full while driving. I had to pull over once about halfway through Sunlight.

I'm a sucker for 1-hit-wonders from the 70's too.

Maybe not LITERALLY one hit wonders, but I have a playlist of 70's AM radio hits:

1. Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
2. Dream Weaver - Gary Wright
3. Sentimental Lady - Bob Welch (former Fleetwood Mac)
4. December, 1963 - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
5. More Than I Can Say - Leo Sayer

DT / Octavarium
Rush / Xanadu

Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing
Rainbow - Stargazer

Really tough to choose.

Beach Boys - God Only Knows
Dream Theater - Learning To Live
Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
Beatles - Penny Lane
Pink Floyd - Time

It's been over 10 years ago, and I don't think my Top 5 would change that much. Perhaps replace 'Jungleland' with '1985' by Paul McCartney, or 'Firth Of Fifth' by Genesis.

I hadn't started listening to Rush then, so perhaps a song by them would be near the Top 5 as well.

Okay, gonna take a swag at this. Maybe in 10 years I'll remember to look back at it.  No order:

Stranger in Your Soul (Transatlantic) - Just a prog masterpiece.
The Count of Tuscany (DT) - Yes, the lyrics still make my cringe, but my god that intro is insanely good and the middle section through the end is transcendent. Petrucci is a god on this song.
Flight (Devin Townsend) - This might not be here in 10 years, but fuck, I love the way this song makes me feel. Somber. Reflective. Beautiful. Listened to it a lot in this shit year.
Ghost of Perdition (Opeth) - This is the best of Opeth when they were still quite metal but really matured their progressive tendencies. Martin Lopez's drumming is worth noting... he was great on the whole album.
Duel with the Devil (Transatlantic) - Not as good as SiYS but still a masterpiece. That's a top 5 album for me easily.

Took me way too long to write this. The only song I didn't struggle to put on was SiYS.

To me personally (the reason I had it in my list) is that I think it's one of the best progressive metal tracks ever made. I could swap it with King of Loss (Pain of Salvation) or a song by Dream Theater (probably Metropolis), but in recent years Leprous have become on of my favourite bands. Bilateral was listed as my #2 album ever the last time I did a top 50 list and Forced Entry is a good reason for that. It's got everything good about prog metal in a single track and it's the best representation of the genre I could think of for this 'Top 5 songs ever' thing.

1. Kevin Gilbert - Water Under the Bridge
2. Marillion - Grendel
3. Fates Warning - Still Remains
4. Rush - Cygnus X-1: Book 2 Hemispheres
5. Genesis - The Cinema Show

Yes - Endless Dream
Rush - Time Stand Still
Boston - Forplay/Longtime
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Triumph - Fight The Good Fight

There are many songs that could rotate in and out of this list but these ones are hard to beat. 😎

Time Stand Still is just such a well written song with a lot of depth.  Rush definitely has some other contenders that could make this list.  Spirit of Radio, Natural Science, Xanadu, Red Barchetta, Headlong Flight etc.

If I had to list top 5 songs that made your jaw hit the floor the quickest the first you heard it, Foreplay/Long Time would be on that list.  I couldn't believe how awesome that song was the first time I heard it back in 1989.

And if I had to expand this list to top 20-25 songs of all time, it would also make that list.

Thinking on my list, it is maybe unique in that my top 4 have probably stayed the same for the past 20 years. 2 of those are landmark songs in musical development, that sound as fresh as they did the first time I heard them all those years ago. The other two hold nostalgic value that has not diminished any in that time.

There are times in my life that the Boston and Triumph song would be way up there. Great calls. I had to buy 2 vinyl albums of that Triumph album because I played it so much. There were screeching scratches throughout.

Hmm... top 5 of all time.  Obviously hard to narrow down that far, but I'll give it a shot (5 songs is such a short list!).  To make the top 5 of all time each song here is a song I considered my "favorite song ever!" for a period of years, and also really still love and consider a favorite today.

Damn Yankees "Silence is Broken"
Dream Theater "I Walk Beside You"
Neal Morse "So Many Roads"
Shadow Gallery "Rain"
Transatlantic "Duel With the Devil"

Really nice to see I Walk Beside You get that level of praise! While I wouldn't say I love it that much, it's a very great song and one that I feel is looked down upon too much.
Also nice to see Duel With the Devil. The Whirlwind is my favorite Transatlantic song, but Duel With the Devil is easily my second-favorite.

I was so ready for a 3rd album by them at some point, but it sadly never came.  We did get the Shaw/Blades album in '95 and the Tommy Shaw solo album, 7 Deadly Zens, in the later 90's, though, and those felt like loose extensions of the Damn Yankees sound to a certain extent, so they were basically the next best thing, for me anyway.

So I've compiled every song listed in this thread into a playlist and for my own enjoyment used live versions when I could.

This is going to be an epic playlist to listen through! Just over 40 hours of music!

If anyone here uses Plex+Tidal for their music library I can share the link to the playlist with you. Just let me know.

It took a while to compile. I'm still missing one song, Endless Dream by Yes. I need to go dig out my old Yes CD's and see if I have that one and I can rip it into Plex. For some reason that album isn't available on Tidal.

Not to be a pain in the butt, but if there is any way to remove the live versions of John Hiatt's "Lipstick Sunset" and Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" and replace them with the studio versions, that would make this perfect.  If it's too much trouble, don't bother.  :tup

I've never seen that before, thank you for posting. I couldn't consider it the definitive version, but cool nonetheless. Strange watching him play with no one else I recognize as his usual playing partners. High Hopes might be my #2 favorite PF song, and I am not even sure which version I'd consider my personal favorite. I like the performance at Abbey Road studios (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMsYmTQ-9NQ). It's a crappy upload, but cool to see it performed without the usual Floydian light show.

That's right, Gilmour said at the time he dearly wished Rick had written that song in time for The Division Bell, but alas he hadn't.

Broken China (Rick Wright's 1996 solo album) has some of his most beautiful songs. Aside from 'Breakthough', 'Reaching For The Rail' (absolutely gorgeous, I'm surprised David didn't single this one out along with 'Breakthrough' - imagine Gilmour singing Sinead O'Connor's vocals here) and 'Along The Shoreline' are as good as anything Floyd did after The Wall to my ears.

Guilt is on album Pure Mood
Stand By Me is on album Be Here Now

Yeah I did the live versions for me. I just have my Plex playlist auto synchronize with the Spotify playlist. I will manually change them.

Hmmm. So if I download this on my laptop that has all my music, I can stream it on my phone somehow (guessing via an app on my phone)?

I'm hoping so, because I've been ripping all my CDs and DVDs to hard drive, and I'm hoping Plex will let me listen to that in my car.

I keep seeing this thread title and dismiss it.  There's no way I could pinpoint 5 songs I don't think.  Even coming up with a top 50 of songs would be too hard.  Albums is hard enough but songs, jeez, I dunno.

Chocolate mousse
Warm apple pie

I actually went to a "You pick 'em" farm a couple years ago and picked a bucket of I think they were "jonagold" and made what was a cross between a pie and a crumble and man was it delicious.   I'd like to try that again, but the picking here has been slim the last couple years.

Here's the Spotify playlist (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0sZrd4v3ktLYK7KkiOfdS8?si=LzI-lYtQQ4asGt3bYFsMFQ), but it's missing 11 songs. All the Transatlantic, Neal Morse, and Spock's Beard stuff isn't on Spotify. As well as Kevin Gilbert and Michael Kiske.
Not to be a pain in the butt, but if there is any way to remove the live versions of John Hiatt's "Lipstick Sunset" and Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" and replace them with the studio versions, that would make this perfect.  If it's too much trouble, don't bother.  :tup
Sure! I mostly did the live versions for my benefit, but since I don't listen to the playlist on Spotify, I have no problem with changing them.
Thanks, pal!

So looking at this a little further, it looks like you do stream them from your own device (it basically makes your computer the server) as opposed to from a cloud based device. So I gather you have to have your computer turned on and connected to the internet in order to stream on another device?

That's right, it's easy to setup. Also for the ability to stream from your personal device (like a laptop) to a phone is you'll have to pay for the app. I suggest just getting the lifetime membership deal and be done with it, plex really is great.

Additionally a lot of tv's have a plex app as well, for example my LG tv has a plex app so I can download it and listen to my music through my home theater set up.

I’ll have to think some more about this, as I’d love to be able to access the music collection on my laptop when I’m out and about from my phone. Does it take up significant memory/processing power on the host/server device while in use (or any when not streaming)? How is the sound quality on the streaming device?

Oh, no one answered you.

Yes. You would have to have whatever device that is running the Plex Server on (whether that's a laptop with an external hard drive (not recommended), or a NAS drive (preferred method), or just a desktop computer) to be able to access the music remotely. On the remote device (cell phone, tablet, laptop, computer, TV, etc.) you will need either the Plex App or the Plexamp app (highly recommended). Once you have the server all set up and the devices set up with the app of your choice, it all just works.

No it doesn't take much processing power at all and you can control the sound quality coming through the stream if you're worried about bandwidth, or you can have it stream in the original quality stored on your laptop.

Pretty much. And you can store your music in much higher quality and stream it in much higher quality that what Spotify provides. So if you want CD quality instead of MP3 quality you can do that with Plex. Plex also integrates with Tidal's Hi-Fi streaming service.

For me, who is perhaps more unreasonably particular, I get to access all my mods and edits.  I will go in and edit my live albums to take out fades, for example.   I will sometimes reorder greatest hits into chronological order.  I will consolidate b-sides and non-album tracks into an "Anthology" album.   I'm almost chubbed up over the idea that I can plug my phone into my car cradle, and access every song I have on CD (that is now ripped to my network hard drive) and organized in my fashion, at will.   I might even opt for setting up a dedicated computer (that is on at all times) if need be.

I guess. I think of the 1/2 hour or 45 minutes I drive to and from work and wonder why I'd need some specialized edited version right then and there. I can get it home after dinner.

I don't know. I don't go to the gym or listen to music when I work.

I will need a plan when my two iPod classics croak though.

I’m interested because the music on my laptop is curated to include only the stuff I liked enough to buy/rip to my computer. My Amazon Music profile is a mess because I add all kinds of stuff on a whim that I might never really want to revisit (and the interface on that platform sucks anyway), and I don’t have any interest in sifting through Spotify to add the music I like (I have an account but never use it). I like to be able to hit shuffle on the collection on my laptop and know that anything that comes up will be something I like.

Glad to see some love for the Damn Yankees! One of my favorite bands back when I was in junior high/high school.

This is news to me. I'm a big fan of Damn Yankees (I have both records and even a single from a soundtrack), and I have both the Blades/Shaw records (Hallucination and Influence).  I'm a sucker for those harmonies.

I hear that.  Some of those Shaw/Blades songs give me a strong Simon & Garfunkel vibe.

Just looking back at the replies to this thread and here I thought I was like one of five people that really enjoyed the Damn Yankees albums when they came out. Even got Hallucination when it came out. That combo of Shaw-Blades is something else.

Their Premium access, which is called Plex Pass, will allow you to access all of their features (which you will need if you are going to listen to music through one of their apps). It costs either $5 a month, or you can do $40 per year, or just to the lifetime pass for $140 and never pay again.

Ok so back to the main topic uuhhh let me try this. I'll try to limit this to one song per band, and in no particular order

Burial Loner
The ultimate Burial track, it's dark, brooding, intense, with an addictive synth line, and a haunting atmosphere.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor The Dead Flag Blues
What got me into ambient music, and still blows me away each time. Deeply emotional and abstract journey through the world's end.

Liquid Tension Experiment Paradigm Shift
What got me into prog music, excellent musicianship and chemistry. One great idea after another.

Nils Frahm Toilet Brushes - More (Live in London)
I can't ever get enough from this magnificent, truly intense performance. It's just on another level :hefdaddy

Anathema The Storm Before the Calm
My favorite Anathema song, chaos and beauty paired together. I'm so glad I got to experience this live. Wished they got back together :'(

Honorable mentions
Koji Kondo Dire Dire Docks
Ludwig van Beethoven Moonlight Sonata
Pink Floyd High Hopes
David Bowie Lazarus
Nine Inch Nails The Wretched
Portisheads Roads
Massive Attack Risingson
Ulver EOS

So basically, Plex is like having personal Spotify service for ones own musical library?

One other thing you can consider if you don't want to go the Plex route is you can have your personal music on Spotify and incorporate it into your Spotify playlist.

1. Create a local playlist on your pc, add your local music to list
2. Make sure your cell phone is on the same network as your pc
3. Sync the local playlist on your phone while your PC is on, your phone will download all the music from your pc
4. You can now play that playlist from your phone whenever without stream, you can even move those songs to other playlists

This isn't as clean of a solution but it's a great way to listen to music on Spotify for artists that may not their entire discog on Spotify.

The downside is that depending on how music you have you can eat up a ton of storage space on your phone.
