Also I dunno if you had thought about it Sigz but I tried to stray away from genre related rounds seeing as some people just might not even listen to certain types of music. It's all your game but I figure I'd throw that out there.

Sent. Not confident in my choice. I think that is the way it will be for the rest of this thing. Sigz and I have completely different tastes in music, and I am going to stick with my guns. Classic rock and classic metal. I see myself losing this whole thing...badly.

So, can I host next, btw? Everyone cool with that?

Same here with the not-so-similar music tastes, but I think I have some fairly Sigz-y stuff... maybe

I'm cool. I think I'd do well with the classic rock angle but I think I should let others get a crack at this game first.

Oh. Others have been wanting to go at this for awhile but haven't gotten in yet. I'm into so much music I love sending song suggestions out but I figured I'd give more people a crack at it. I love me some classic rock and metal so I figured I'd fit in well with some of your tastes.

Round One Results:

Wow, awesome choices from everyone. I actually feel really bad about having to put any of these at the 'low' rankings, because every choice was fantastic.

Best:
gorille - Pure Reason Revolution - 'Deus Ex Machina' - I've heard of these guys before, but never given them a listen. Awesome blend of hard rock/metal and electronic, with some really cool vocal harmonies. Definitely going to have to pick up this album.

Very Good:
Birch Boy -Frank Zappa - 'Inca Roads' - I only have two Zappa albums, Apostrophe and Hot Rats, and between those Apostrophe's the only one I actually like (though I love it). Inca Roads was excellent, continuing with the same kind of quirky avant-progginess that I love about Apostrophe.

Good:
Orcus - Wintersleep - "Miasmal Smoke & The Yellow Bellied Freaks" - I originally read the band name as Winterspell, and was bracing for maximum cheese. However, I was pleasantly surprised by some excellent post/indie rock. The vocals were only OK, but they didn't really detract from the music in any way, and I'm definitely inclined to check more of them out.

Voxyn - Thomas Dybdhal - 'Cecilia' - Very good acoustic/singer-songwriter type stuff. I especially enjoyed the female vocals on it as well.

Arrich - Avenged Sevenfold - 'A Little Piece of Heaven' - The only A7X song I've heard was their new single (Nightmare?), it wasn't bad. This definitely blew it out of the water. It would be quite a bit higher but I felt that it could have been a few minutes shorter and been better off for it. Other than that, it was really cool.

Still good, but lower:
King Shmegland - Black Mountain - 'Tyrants' - This was pretty good sludgey/proggy hard rock type stuff. I quite enjoyed it, though I found it dragging a little bit. Nonetheless, I'd definitely check out more.

Also good, but lowest:

73109 - Janis Joplin - 'Me and Bobby McGee' - I'm not a massive JJ fan, but I enjoy her here and there. This song, while good, was definitely the weakest of the bunch, it was still good, but I didn't think it was really on par with other songs of her that I've heard.

Score:

Gorille - 5
Birch - 4
Arrich - 3
Voxyn - 3
Orcus - 3
Shmegland - 2
73109 - 1

Nah, sorry. You gotta wait till I start the next one, if you want in.

So, sent. I am a bit more confident in this one. Trippy as hell and the entire song comes to a grand, sweeping climax from something that was a little seed in the beginning.

Sigz, do you like trippy songs?

Edit: By the way, am I the only dude who explains in my PM why I sent the song, or do you guys just send a link?

I don't really have a problem with it, as long as you're not using the same artist every round.

Round 2 Results

Best:

Arriich - Nellie McKay - There You Are In Me - Really awesome song. It managed to cover quite a bit of ground in two and a half minutes, and was interesting throughout.

Very Good:

Orcus - Jon Hopkins - The Wider Sun - Very nice atmospheric orchestral piece. my only major complaint with it is that it didn't really seem to go... anywhere. What was there was really gorgeous though.

Good:

Shmegland - Robert Plant - Freedom Fries - Good solid rock song. I like Robert Plant's voice, and used to be a huge Zeppelin fan, but never really checked out his solo stuff. This was quite good though.

Voxiain - Volbeat - Rebel Monster - Awesome metal song, what really dragged it down was the vocals though.  Not sure how to describe them, but they didn't really work IMO. Besides that the song was great.

73109 - Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit - I already know this song from my childhood spent listening to classic rock radio, but it's a very good song nonetheless. Not much else to say, I feel like most people know what it is.

Decent:

Gorille - The Agonist - Swan Lake - I like Swan Lake and I like The Agonist, but this particular arrangement didn't really work. Alissa has a fantastic voice, but there wasn't anything that really wowed me in this song.

lol:

Birch Boy - Napalm Death - You Suffer - I actually like Napalm Death, but a two-second song is just something to laugh at.

Score:

Arrich - 8
Gorille - 7
Orcus - 7
Voxyn - 6
Shmegland - 5
Birch - 5
73109 - 4

Next Round: Any song that contains a non-'traditional rock' instrument, i.e. something other than guitar, bass, drums, keyboard.

Haha yeah. "The Wider Sun" works incredibly well as a lead in to the next track on the album, "Vessel". I still love it on its own but like you said it just kinda builds and that's it. Try giving the album a whirl.

Glad you liked the Nellie McKay Ian! She's a really interesting pop/jazz artist and her stuff is incredibly varied but mostly really good. That song is easily one of my favourites, so I was surprised when I noticed how short it was!

Gonna have to have a think about the new round. Presumably the non-traditional instrument should feature quite prominently (i.e. either used a lot throughout the song, or for a whole solo or something) rather than just being in it?

so far I think, besides kissing sigz ass(which won't happen), I have to pm him a youtube or equivelant link to some kind of tune I think is thematically appropriate and hope he enjoys it better than all the other pm's he gets???

is that about it?

Growls, when done right, work. Almost all death metal growls don't. Groove metal vocals are cool though. Sepultura, Machine Head, Lamb of God, Gojira, etc.

And Devin Townsend is amazing.

Gojira is death metal you nub.
Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette
Post by: Sigz on September 01, 2010, 03:22:35 PM
I wouldn't really call them death metal, and Joe rarely ever truly growls, which was Cole's point. (except for their demo EP)
Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette
Post by: MetalManiac666 on September 01, 2010, 03:25:29 PM
Eh, sure, I wouldn't lump them in with most traditional death metal, but their sound definitely borrows a lot from the genre.  As for Duplantier's vox not being growls, I would say it depends on how you define growls.
Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette
Post by: Sigz on September 01, 2010, 03:27:12 PM
Well seeing as how there's some discernible melody/pitch to them a lot of the time, I wouldn't group most of them with death growls.

Hey Sigz, would you mind if I started my roulette after your 4th round? I normally would never ask but with school around the corner, I think I could bang out a few first rounds between Friday and Wednesday. If it isn't cool, that is completely ok.

Just learn some patience Cole, you're drawing all the fun out of this whole thing! Just wait until your turn and then take your time when you get there, there's no rush.

It isn't that. I just wanted to get some rounds out of the way before school, but I guess it is OK. It shouldn't be that bad in the first few weeks...I hope. :\

It's not like you need to do a new round every day. Even with school you'll surely be able to listen to 8 or 9 songs every 2-3 days.

Ok then. :)

No worries. I really love my song. I hope it is somewhere up in the top few. I think Sigz would dig the instrumentation and singing when the african is singing it, but when the lead singer of the band starts, i think it would turn him off.

Round Whatever Results:

I had a really difficult time ranking a lot of these, and now that it's done I think the world is going to implode from the results:

Best:

73109 - Soulfly - Moses - Damn cool song. Awesome mix of downbeat reggae/ska type stuff with some pretty good metal mixed in. It dragged a tad, but still worked very well.

Very Good:

Ariich - The Cat Empire - The Darkness - Very cool Indian type music, and the last third was fucking awesome. The guy's voice was slightly grating, but nothing too terrible, and the music was damn good.

Good:

King Shmegland - Guster - Barrel of a Gun - Cool psychedelic-ish alternative rock with awesome percussion.

Gorille - Eluvite - Inis Mona - ...Interesting. It was like celtic-ish power metal with a violin, bagpipes, and a hurdy gurdy. It's not the kind of thing I would listen to all the time, but it was a great listen nonetheless.

Voxyn - Jonsi - Go Do - Really great song. I haven't listened to Sigur Ros in a while, but I've been meaning to check out Jonsi's stuff for a while, and this is definitely more of a reason to do so.

Also good, but less so:

Orcus - Dan Martin - No Snow - Kind of a low-fi blues-ish song. I really liked the rough and loose feel to the instrumention.

Even less (nugget):

Birch - Charlie Daniels - The Devil Went Down to Georgia - Decent song, and I really liked the violin work (especially as an ex-violinst myself), but the down-homey blues story type thing isn't quite my thing.

Score:

Arrich - 12
Gorille - 10
Orcus - 9
Voxyn - 9
73109 - 9
Shmegland - 8
Birch - 6

Next Round (4?): Vocal performance. Interpret this how you will, but the song should have what you consider to be an emphasis or foundation in the vocal performance. It can be all vocals, or have some really out-there style, or just have really stunning vocal work. Basically, if the song wouldn't half as good without the singing, it probably fits the bill in one way or another.

Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette
Post by: 73109 on September 03, 2010, 11:46:50 AM
Then I am assuming they rank it according to their tastes. I don't think it is right however if someone sends a song that they know the host knows and likes. For example, if someone sends me And Justice for All next game, I would put them last.

In Sigz game, we should all be sending songs by artists that aren't in his last.fm, otherwise it's cheating. If we end up sending him something it turns out he's heard before, then fair enough, he should be ranking it appropriately.

IT'S STILL TODAY OVER HERE JEEZ

Round Whatever Pt. 2:

Best:

Gorille - O+S - New Life - Wow. Just, wow. Amazing trip-hoppish ethereal pop/I have no idea how to describe it. It was excellent though.

Very Good:

Orcus - Neko Case - The Pharoahs - Not really sure what to say. It was just a really great song overall.

Good:

Ariich - After Forever - Can't get the name - A really nice song. Floor Jansen has a beautiful voice, and the music was very good.

Voxyn - Tallest Man on Earth - King of Spain - Another really good singer-songwriter, I quite enjoyed the song overall. The guy's voice wasn't amazing, but it worked very well with the song.

Kingshmegland - Extreme - Last Hour
- I'm not normally into the whole hard rock ballad type thing, but I liked this. Not much else to say.

Lower:

Birch - Jeff Buckley - Grace - I've heard people left and right losing their shit over Jeff Buckley, and I gave him a chance a few years ago; he didn't do much for me. This song was decent, but I don't feel much inclination to go further.

Lowest:

73109 - Jeckyll and Hyde Resurrection - Confrontation - My name is Ian, and I hate musicals. Seriously, the music and everything was alright, but the song just felt wrong without any kind of visual component to it. I felt like I was listening to a movie, and that really didn't work.

Pointage:

Arrich - 15
Gorille - 15
Orcus - 14
Voxyn - 12
73109 - 10
Shmegland - 11
Birch - 8

Next round: Open. Send whatever the fuck you want. Hell, you could even record yourself taking a shit. (Please don't though)

Yeah we have our fair share of shitty beers here. In fact, when it comes to lager, we British are terrible. Bitters and ales (real beers :P) are where we're at. Continental Europe do a lot of good lagers though, particularly in the central and eastern regions.

Wait, what's this thread about again?

Alright, sorry for the massive delay peeps.

Best:

Ariich - Freak Kitchen - Dead Soul Man: So awesome. For some reason, they reminded me of a heavier proggier version of Barenaked Ladies (esp. the vocals). Seeing as how BNL is one of my favorite bands ever, that's a very good thing.

Great:

Orcus - The Antlers - Prologue/Kettering: I'd seen the album cover before, but had no idea what it was. It was in fact fantastic though. Really gorgeous atmospheric/indie/whatever.

Good:

Gorille - Augury - Brimstone Landscapes: Cool tech metal song. A lot of it just kinda blended together, but it was all good, and the guest vocals from Syriak and Leilendil definitely added some variety later on in the song.

Birch - Fallout - Rock Hard: Good hard rock/metal song. Not much else to say.

Voxiain  - Villagers - Twenty Seven Strangers: More nice acoustic singer songwriter type stuff. How much singer songwriter stuff do you have Voxyn?  :lol

Less good:

73109 - Clapton & BB King - Riding With the King - I love Clapton, but this song was just kind of annoying. I generally don't care for really upbeat blues like this. *shrug*

Makes me glad I was born in the 90s:

teh king - The Fixx - One Thing Leads to Another - Sorry Shmegland, but I really, REALLY can't stand 80s music as a whole.

Score:

Arrich - 20
Orcus - 19
Gorille - 18
Voxyn - 15
73109 - 12
Shmegland - 12
Birch - 11

THE PENULTIMATE ROUND OF DOOM: Give me the strangest song you can find. Whatever you define as 'strange' will work.

I'll give some exceptions to Clapton since he's found ways to make cool licks from the typical I-IV-V blues structure but I can't help but feel the whole genre is incredibly samey and predictable.

Penultimate Round:

Great submissions from everyone, there really wasn't a bad song in the bunch, it was pretty hard to rank.

Best:

BirchBoy - Tay Zonday - Chocolate Rain - Greatest song ever motherfuckers. Don't agree? Fuck you. The piano bit is actually really cool, and the drums, while insanely cheesy, work really well. Most importantly, it's pretty catchy, which is good, because you're gonna be hearing the same melody for five minutes. Even the verse and chorus have the same melody. Doesn't get more avant-garde than that bitches.

Very Good:

Orcus - Sleep In - Two Hands - This was a really cool song. Very mellow and restrained, and the percussion worked really well. Still, it's not chocolate rain.

Good:

Gorille - Cardiacs - Jibber and Twitch - Pretty much the kind of music I was expecting to get this round. Really crazy, psychotic, and quirky. Reminded me of a 'classic' prog band on crack.

Ariich - Mr. Bungle - Squeeze Me Macaroni - :heart Mike Patton. I really need to get more Mr. Bungle, I don't know why I don't have more.

Cole - Tenacious D - Tribute - AWWWW YEAH Heard it before, but great song nonetheless.

Still good:

KingShmegland - Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell - Really cool song, with a nice latin vibe to it, but it got a little repetitive.

Meh:

Voxyn - Animal Collective - My Girls - Everyone seems to jack off all over this band, and I'd never really payed much attention to them. This song wasn't bad by any means, but it really didn't do a ton for me.

Score:

Arrich - 23
Orcus - 23
Gorille - 21
Voxyn - 16
Birch - 16
73109 - 15
Shmegland - 14

Final round!
Alright, so for this last round please try to get your song in by Monday afternoon or so, so I can do this monday night, and then we'll be done before I move. If it doesn't get done then, it'll be at least a week before I can finish this.

The category will be 'short epic'. Send me a song you would describe as 'epic', but <6 minutes.
Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette
Post by: Gorille85 on September 24, 2010, 11:06:39 PM
It's a shame you already know of Thrice for the short-epic song...Also, "A Clown's Mindtrap" by Unexpect is pretty much the definition of epicness and is well under the six minutes mark...Oh well, I'll have to think that one through.

Chocolate Rain? Really? Kind of a lame safe choice.
My reasoning when I picked it was actually "Well, I already screwed myself over with "You Suffer", so I mine as well just pick something that obviously will be at the bottom of the list"... I had no idea it was a safe choice. :lol

Happy Freakin Birthday to you, BB. :lol
Thanks!

It's something that everybody already knows, though. It'd be like submitting "Sweet Caroline" for most obnoxious song.

OK, so I decided that I'll chose a VERY hit-or-miss song for this round. I'm not gonna win with a middle-of-the-pack song so I'll have to get the top spot. I describe that song as an epic but if you don't get it like that...you won't love it.

I think the song is epic. Headbanging and awesome. Not sure how much you dig straight up death metal.

I do, but this song is fucking epic. And I don't really hate death metal. I hate RORORORO Metal. To me, there is a distinct difference.

No, it isn't Devy,

Ok, so...

I'm gonna get flamed for this but...

To me, death metal isn't always that bad. Bands like Gojira, who are called Death Metal are pretty great from what I've heard but it isn't RORORO. There is something more to it. RORORORO metal is Cannibal Corpse. *waits to get destroyed*

Oh, and btw, I'm not hating on CC. I hate the music but I respect their artistic integrity the same way I respect Queen's and Radiohead's.
Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette

I don't think I'll ever be able to understand the appeal of a band like Cannibal Corpse. And you know what? That's OK.

No idea what song it was, but I heard a relatively new one and I enjoyed it.

To me, there are bands that take death metal and flip it on its ass to make it something more. They are usually pretty good. Gojira and the little I've heard from Maudlin of the Well are good examples.

To me, RORORO metal is the same cookie cutter extreme metal. CC, Slipknot, and Cradle of Filth are good examples of these.

Its just rororo and rararara.

From what I've heard.

Maybe you heard the wrong bands?? I mean I'm not a fan of those bands but it is just wrong to put them in the same bag with CC and such.
Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette
Post by: 73109 on September 27, 2010, 09:13:42 PM
I'm not saying the three bands are bad (although I find them to be bad) its just that they are all very samey. Within their own genre of extreme metal of course.
Title: Re: Sigz's Song Roulette
Post by: Gorille85 on September 27, 2010, 09:15:59 PM
But those are three very different bands!! and Slipknot and Cradle are much more than jsut RORORO all the time...like I get where your going with CC but man!

Ok then...

Lets just stick with CC but if every song is duh duh duh, duh duh duh, duh duh duh, rororo, rorororo, rororo, it just doesn't click with me.

Oh, and btw, I just listened to some Cradle of Filth, and I take back what I said. Now, they have evolved. I was talking about their earlier years when they were just straight up black metal...I think. I could be wrong.

No they never were. Trying to compare CoF, CC and Slipknot is hilarious as none of those bands are anything like each other.

Final Round!

Great songs from everyone, this was a really good round.

Best:

Gorille - Music for Money - La Marche - Really cool piano bit, and the song certainly lived up to its name.

Very Good:

Voxiain -Amorphis - The Sky is Mine - Awesome, awesome metal. I don't know why I didn't listen to these guys earlier.

Good:

Ariich - Everygrey - Whe the Walls Go Down - This was a really cool track. I think it overstayed its welcome a tad, but it was still good.

Kingshemgland - This Day and Age - The Bell and the Hammer - Not really sure what to say, it was just a good song.

Orcus - Riverside - Before - Riverside is kinda weird for me. I like their music, but I usually never find myself wanting to listen to them; kinda how I feel about this song. It was good, but doesn't have much that makes me want to come back.

Lower:

Birch - The Sword - Black  - Cool heavy/stoner metal. It was still good, but it had some kinda bland bits thrown in with other good riffs.

Lowest:

73109 - Morbid Angel - God of Emptiness - Not a bad song by any means, but not really that good. Early death metal doesn't do much for me for the most part.

Final Score:

Arrich - 26
Orcus - 26
Gorille - 26
Voxyn - 20
Birch - 18
Shmegland - 17
73109 - 16

Well... shit. I don't really want this to end on a tie (and a three-way tie at that), but I won't be able to get to this for probably a week at least. What do you guys want to do?

I don't know for everyone but I have no problem waiting a week for a tie-breaker nor do I have one to live with this triple-win. It's really up to you/the rest of the participants.

Also, I'm really glad you "got" the epicness of my song! :tup

Dammit, I was thinking of sending an Amorphis song, which might have got me 2nd place in the round and 1st overall. :lol

I'm happy either way, a tie is cool or if you want to do a deciding round that's fine as well.

But you should definitely listen to lots of Amorphis and then accompany me to their gig. :P
