Okay, okay. I know that this forum only has a very limited number of Nevermore fans. But I figure that since there is this fad sweeping the forum, that I'd jump onto the bandwagon as well. I'll be doing two songs at a time for the next week or so (should take 10 days, but I doubt I'll be doing it EVERY day).
Now for those who aren't all that aware of the Nevermore, or are aware but don't know the band very well, they are one of my all time favourite metal bands. The band itself is comprised of many different styles from all over the metal spectrum. This includes thrash, death, progressive, power and melodic. Warrel Dane's vocal style is often bothersome by many, but if you ask me he is one of the best vocalists in metal today.
But I digress
Without further ado, the 20 & 19.
20. The Death of Passion
TDoP is the third track off of Nevermore's third album, Dreaming Neon Black. This song displays a multitude of elements that make up what I love about Nevermore. Fast paced riffing, wide range of vocals from Mr. Warrel Dane (a mix of lower tone singing and some higher, almost falsetto-esque vocals) and a rather interesting instrumental/solo section. But, the reason this one remains at the lowest of my list is due to well...they have better. Yes, the riffs are :metal and the vocals are god damn cool, but for Nevermore, this song is almost just standard for them. Yes, I enjoy it very much, but they have much better and more interesting/definitive tracks compared to The Death of Passion.
19. Poison Godmachine
Just like TDoP, this song is full of what I love about Nevermore. Though, the riffs in between vocals for Poison Godmachine, I find, are much more intense and interesting. It's also one of the tracks I find much more enjoyable from Dreaming Neon Black. Actually, the first 4 songs in this top 20 are going to be from DNB. Primarily because it's my least favourite album of theirs next to Enemies of Reality, and there are really only select tracks from DNB that I thoroughly enjoy as stand alone tracks. A lot of it has to do with Nevermore's other material being a lot more interesting and :metal, instead of just being plain old :metal.
One other note about this song - Around the 4 minute mark, Warrel lets off this howl like high note, that I just absolutely love. His range is absolutely fantastic, and he really shows it in this song.

I don't know what it is, but I just can't get into 'The Obsidian Conspiracy'. All their albums I can get into, but this one just sounds tired to my ears.

18. Forever
It's a bit of an odd choice, but I actually very much enjoy this song. It's just so...infinitely sad. The music itself is very soft, dark and melancholic and Warrel's vocals sound full of despair and sadness. The man knows how to put such a powerful emotion into his music. I find it to be a fantastic closer to this album as well. It really gives a sense of the "concept" being both completed, but at the same time it feels a tad unfinished, much like a Paul Thomas Anderson film.
17. Beyond Within
With such a balls heavy riff to open up DNB, this song already proves it's worth. I think out of the entire album, Warrel gives off his best vocal performance on Beyond Within. In terms of vocal delivery and lyric delivery. I don't have all that much else to say about this song, but damn is it good.

Side note - That's actually the last you will see of Dreaming Neon Black. It's a good album, but since the rest of their material kicks its royal ass, it really doesn't hold up anywhere else in a top 20.

I think TOC is a weak album for the most part.

16. Ambivalent
The first thing I have to say about this song is...the riffs. So much engie. So powah. Jeff Loomis's guitar work is god damn brutal on this song at times, and there are a few odd riffs thrown in there that I really like. The song mostly showcases the brutality that Nevermore can achieve when they write a song that feels more guitar heavy than anything else. Much like a few other moments on Enemies of Reality, I feel that Warrel's vocals aren't completely at the top of his game, but they are good nonetheless. It might just be the shitty production value of the original version of this album, but his vocals sound a bit off at times. Also the chorus is just alright, seeing how it has to live up to several other Nevermore songs that have godly chorus sections.
15. Your Poison Throne
RISE. RISE. RISE. is the first thing this song throws at you as the guitar starts pounding against your ears. And hell, it sounds cool. Though I have to say, this is definitely not Nevermore's high point lyrically. It's good, but could be better (i.e. all of This Godless Endeavor). But now the good parts of the song. Heavy riffs, nice "slower" guitar solo section from Mr. Loomis and Warrel's vocals sound superb and much more refined than normal. This song is also one of those Nevermore songs that I just find...hard to resist. It's just so...good and extremely accessible.

I do not have the Sneap remix, but I am very much aware of it's existence and plan on getting ahold of it as soon as possible. And I'm not saying that DNB is necessarily badly produced, but the production hinders some of the experience for me. I still very much enjoy the album, as I do with all of Nevermore's work, but it's just my least favourite.

TOC has some good moments, but I just can't get over how 'stock Nevermore' it sounds. I feel there's not enough good songs, the riffs sound too familiar, and above all: the vocal melodies just aren't that musically pleasing, and Warrel always times too early. 'And the maiden spoke' is a standout though, but the title track can't hold a candle to previous title tracks.

I actually very much enjoy The Obsidian Conspiracy. It's overall a very solid album. I mean, it's nothing compared to This Godless Endeavor, but it's overall very good if you ask me. To each his own, but I hated it at first and it's really grown on me since the release.
Anyway...
12. Moonrise (through Mirrors of Death)
I can see this being a slightly controversial choice, putting a song from ToC so high up on my top 20. But what can I say, I really, really enjoy this song. Warrel has some interesting vocals, especially the way he says "and now your dead". I love it. And the riffs are so damn cool. Yes, I actually would pick this song over Final Product and Ambivalent. Suck it.
11. Narcosynthesis
I have this feeling that Ultimetalhead is going to want to crucify me for the placement of this song. This is the part of the list where each song is within "I absolutely fucking love this song" territory. It actually starts here, at 11. But, obviously, I love the next 10 songs a little more than the last. But this song is so god damn :2metal: it's not even funny. But yes, the reason this song is placed at 11 is primarily because well...there are 10 other songs I find better or just more enjoyable. I also should mention how much I love the riffs in this song. If Mr. Loomis really shows us how he can beat someones face in with just a simple guitar riff, it's with Narcosynthesis's main riff.

11.5. I, Voyager
Forgive me for being a little prick and adding in a ".5", but after reviewing my list I realized I had forgotten about this song and there really isn't any other way I want to change my list, really. I love I, Voyager. It's a fucking sweet song. The chorus and lyrics are one of the primary reasons I love this song. They are rather...dark and almost creepy in a very "metal" sense. This song in general is just cool in all ways.
10. Sentient 6
One of the things I love about this song is the concept. The song tells the story of a machine (android of some sort) who becomes sentient of it's own existence and the understanding of man kind. It's very science-fictiony, which I'm not always a fan of, but the ideas and concepts this song alone holds are rather cool. I also love the buildup of melancholy that eventually erupts into one fucking hell of a finale. Also Warrel's vocals...something about them...sound almost cold and evil near the end. I love that.
9. Seed Awakening
Nevermore have often come forth in having their own style of sheer brutality. Seed Awakening is easily one of the best examples of this brutality. The riffs are plain old face crushing. Which I love when Nevermore does something like this, because when they bring forth brutality, they fucking bring it. This is often one of the songs I love to turn to when I want something very brutal, but at the same time, melodic (the chorus) and thought provoking (lyrics). It has it all. "There is no stronger drug than reality"

Agreed. Narcosynthesis might be my favorite. It has it all: Nasty riffing. Great lyrics and melody lines. The harmonies are classic. The bridge is the greatest thing ever.

My problem with Nevermore is that although the riffage is really cool, nothing else grabs me and I get bored. That being said, when this list is through I'm gonna listen to them all I see if anything sticks.

I bought their entire discography and sat on it for a good 6 months before I "got" Nevermore. I'd listen through and it just kinda went in one ear and out the other. Like most artists, there is a time and place for their sound to really grab hold of me. Then album by album, it usually creeps in their a bit at a time. I think what first hooked me was the balance of the melodic and brutal. And the grooves. For God's sake, the motherfuckin' grooves make me wanna scream.

8. The River Dragon Has Come
No top Nevermore list is complete without River Dragon. This song is pure progressive metal mayhem. The second that first heavy riff kicks in after the soft interlude, my head begins banging and I feel nothing but pure energy (see "So engie. So powah"). The main riff is brutal, the solos are awesome, and the parts of the song where the pace really picks up are priceless. Also almost all songs where Warrel hits one of his famous high notes is worth mentioning. This song being no exception. Near the very end of the song, Warrel let's off a squeal-like high note when singing "Technology the beast, The seventh crown", and it gives me shivers down my spine every god damn time.
7. The Psalm of Lydia
This song has easily one of my all time favourite Nevermore riffs. The main riff is absolutely fantastic. It's one of the main reasons I find myself listening to this song constantly when looking for something by Nevermore to listen to. Another notable element I love about this song is the way Warrel delivers his vocals during the verses. They just sound...awesomely badass. Also the smooth transition between guitar solos back to the main riff near the last 1/4 of the song = :metal :metal :metal

I'm a tad too exhausted to actually type up explanations for my next two choices. But I'll give you something very brief.
6. Dead Heart in a Dead World
I love the chorus to this song. It's so damn...catchy. And that doesn't even distract from the rest of the song. Overall, it's just...bad fucking ass.
5. Evolution 169
Awesome chorus, sweet riffs and lyrically it's one of my favourites. This also is the first Nevermore song I ever heard, and holds a special little place in my heart. Such a damn good track.

4. The Heart Collector
I love this song. Easily my all time favourite slower song/ballad from Nevermore. The music is slow and often feels a bit melancholic. Especially in Warrel's vocal delivery. During the chorus of this song is when he really shines. The amount of power he puts into his voice during the last chorus of the song, I love it. This song just feels...sad. And it does that really fucking well. Lyrically it's up there as well, having some very well thought out and well written lyrics and lyrical themes. Which Nevermore has always been good for, but it shines so much in this song.
3. The Obsidian Conspiracy
After numerous listens of the new Nevermore album since it's release, I haven't been able to get over how god damn fucking good the title track is. While I really like the album, and find it to be overall really good, nothing on it shines like The Obsidian Conspiracy. Some of Jeff Loomis's best guitar work (riffs, solos, etc.) are in this song alone. From the second that opening riff begins, I just feel ready for one of the most intense musical moments I could imagine. The speed, the brutality and the melodic. It's all there. It's what makes Nevermore the best metal band (at least from the 90s) to still be releasing music today. And the vocals. Warrel is at the top of his game on this song. He in general, just fucking slays. From the second I heard this song on the day of the album's release, I knew this song would be an instant classic for Nevermore. I mean, it climbed up to my list of all time favourite Nevermore songs extremely fast. It's just...so god damn heavy.
2. The Politics of Ecstasy
When making this list, I found myself surprising myself that I hadn't put a SINGLE song from this album on my list. Which is actually kind of funny, because I definitely consider this my second favourite Nevermore record, but there are obviously songs from other albums I like more, I suppose. Now about the song, Politics of Ecstasy. The main riff of this song...oh my god I love it. It's so chunky and so heavy (almost...industrial-ish). It really pounds your head as Warrel wails away at his vocals, which are top notch, by the way. I love the chorus. The way Warrel delivers "Choking on the influx of technology" sounds so damn cool and smooth. But there is one part of this song that shines much more over almost any other Nevermore song. The instrumental section. This is what seperates a good brutally heavy metal song from a musically complex and brilliant progressive metal song. The changes in time signatures, the riffs and and the progression throughout the entire section of the song is a moment of true musical perfection, if you ask me. It's sheer musical chaos. And I fucking love it.

Part of it was because I was a nub and didn't originally make a pre-determined list of songs until I hit 12. I realize now there are several songs I'd switch out, but too late. Tomorrow I'll post #1.

Now with that out of the way, #1 is...*drum roll*
1. This Godless Endeavor (fuck all of you for spoiling it)
TGE is the perfect Nevermore song. It encompasses EVERYTHING that Nevermore does well and creates a flawless musical piece that I could honestly listen to on repeat for over an hour straight (I know, I've done this before.) Not only is TGE my all time favourite Nevermore song, it's easily one of my all time favourite songs in general. I will go as far as to say that this song is the greatest progressive (thrash) metal song ever written. It has everything. Fantastically brutal riffs, face melting solos/sweep picking, Warrel's high notes, intelligently written lyrics and so on. The riffs are easily the best Nevermore have ever written and cause nothing but electricty to flow through my body as I have multiple uncontrollable eargasms.
Yes, Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor is a perfect song. There is literally nothing about it I'd change. And unless they write something that causes me to have a stroke of metal awesomeness, this song will never budge from my #1 spot. Ever.

Funny thing is, if I had made a pre-determined list beforehand (I didn't think ahead at all), more stuff from TGE would have made it on the list. Oh well, I am still happy with my list as it is.

I considered just posting my favorites list as well, sans commentary. But I honestly need to give the new record a few more spins as I'm not sure if any of those would place in my top 25...Although I'm listening to The Blue Marble and the New Soul right now and its wrenching my heart :-[

I think they're more "when you listened to it" albums. When I connected with those albums that type of metal was right up my alley so I was blown away. Strangely enough for as much shit as I give power metal and the like I really love those two albums. The arpeggios at the end of "This Godless Endeavor" are probably the most tasteful riff based shredding I've heard in a metal song and destroy me every single time.

Nevermore are a progressive metal band. I used the word thrash in there for specific songs, mostly. The band includes influences from all different metal genres (power, death, thash/speed, progressive, etc.). But when all is said and done, they are a progressive metal band (with HEAVY thrash influence).

25. What Tomorrow Knows
Considering this song was the lead-off song on their debut album, one imagines that Nevermore wanted to really define themselves with this song. I'd say that this goal was more or less accomplished. From the chugging riffs (which absolutely color their discography), Warrel's epic, soaring vocals (which are also abundant in their later work), and the clean electric section building up into a trademark Loomis solo section, this is a Nevermore song through and through. The only reason it's not higher is because the formula is executed in a more interesting way on their subsequent albums. One thing I've always enjoyed about the song is how Warrel's vocal melody does that little jump down (mostly during the end of the song), while the riff stays the same. It adds another element to a fairly repetitive song that keeps it entertaining.
24. Matricide
The second song from the In Memory EP reminds me so much of Iced Earth that it's almost uncanny. I can name a few songs (mostly on Something Wicked) that sound pretty much exactly like this song. The contrasts between the verse and the chorus are what really give this song its life. If there's one thing Nevermore's good at, it's making a really epic chorus that no one would mind hearing 20 more times. Matricide is a fantastic example of that. The guitar solo duel between Jeff Loomis and Pat O'Brien really pushes this song over the edge.
23. Optimist or Pessimist
Immensely headbangable. That's the main thing I have to say about this one. The pounding drum beat behind the speedy riff just gets the neck muscles working without fail. Though, the highlight of this song has to be the sudden mood change into the clean section, the guitar solos fluttering around like butterflies. Then, the song reprises it's fast, chunky riff, allowing for more guitar wizardry and a satisfying, yet abrupt, conclusion to a rather short song.

Oh, I wasn't complaining. Just relaying the info. I tend to go through a series of phases with an artist. I get kinda crazy and buy their discography. Then it sits there until I have an initial "discovery", finding that the music just seems to fit me in the moment. It usually is short-lived, and then I come back some time later and become really, really badly obsessed. I have just entered that final stage.
I already stated the same thing with DT...I also remember my time with Anthrax was very similar.

22. Your Poison Throne
There's two things that I really love about this song. First off, the riff during the verses compliments Warrel's vocals perfectly, which are top notch as usual. The other thing is of course, the chorus. Warrel's layered vocals add an almost Blind Guardian-esque feel, suitably epic. The chanting is a little strange for a band like Nevermore, but it works fine. The melodic solo during the quieter passage is flawless as usual.
21. The Lotus Eaters
The only song you will see from Dreaming Neon Black, this song has that perfect Nevermore ballad feel. A quiet, restrained verse, followed by a chorus with Loomis' massively heavy guitar giving Warrel room to really explore his range. This one is all about the atmosphere. It gives off that dark, autumn, Opeth feel that I adore so much. Awesome track.
20. A Future Uncertain
Starting with Warrel's layered vocals over a mellow clean guitar, giving way to a crunchy 7-string riff, this song sets the mood perfectly. The lyrics are an obvious knock on humanity, asking why we can't reach a certain point of understanding. Loomis' sweep picking break between the chorus and the next verse is fantastic as usual. The song really takes off during the main guitar solo, before backing off to reveal some piano and bass. This one kind of reminds me of Annihilator, in a way. Kind of a textbook thrash ballad.

But agreed, it's my favorite off the album and my favorite of their ballads. It's possibly the most bleak, miserable sounding thing ever, and I love it for that fact. I actually put this much higher myself. It's easily top ten for me.

I...don't know how to respond. It was my favorite for the longest time, but was recently bumped out by Dead Heart in a Dead World.
Even Warrel says it's his favorite, and they've contemplated playing it in it's entirety on a future tour. I mean, it's a beautiful conceptual piece. Very vivid and layered. Right up there with Mindcrime and Scenes from a Memory in my opinion.

Really good song. The chorus is most likely the best part of the song. Nothing much to say about it really.

Again, the chorus is suitably epic with its heavy riff. Warrel's vocals compliment it well.

Great song. One of the better tracks on TOC.

The flamenco break into the shred solo halfway through the song is an awesome change of pace that I really enjoy. Like any Nevermore song with shred guitar (read: 99% of them), I love it dearly.
15. The Politics of Ecstasy
This song wastes no time in shoving the political message down your throat, and then pounds it in with a heavy dissonant riff that hits like the fist of an angry god. This is another one of those songs that just begs to be headbanged to. Then, the gear completely shifts. The bass leads in an odd-time riff that brings forth Nevermore's progressive elements loud and clear. As always, the riffs are soul-crushingly heavy, and the solos are fantastic.
14. Seed Awakening
Get ready to see a lot of Enemies of Reality. I'll waste no time in saying it's without a doubt my favorite Nevermore album. This song just hits you like a bullet. Wrapping up what I believe is a loose concept album, it has no choice but to end the album on a high note. It does this very well. The guitar melody playing over Warrel's shouts of "WITNESS SEED AWAKENING" is a nice touch. Loomis' sweep picking lesson is always much appreciated.

"Mindless" is probably the last thing I'd call Loomis' shredding. By most metal standards he does it really damn tastefully.

13. Inside Four Walls
This song hits you square in the chest right away with it's constant pounding beat and pummeling riffs. The political message is once again extremely prominent, describing the flaws of the U.S. prison system. The chorus is once again the highlight of the song, with the guitar solo not far behind.
12. Enemies of Reality
My god, this song. This is one of those intro songs that absolutely sets the mood perfectly for the rest of the album. The crushing, thrash riffs absolutely destroy. Warrel's vocals are suitably darker than normal, aside from the chorus where he lets his soaring voice take over atop the familiar chords. Flawless.

11. The Seven Tongues of God
This is another one of those album openers that just sets the tone of the album perfectly. The quick, galloping riffs instantly recall a heavier Iron Maiden. The intro riff still stands as one of my favorite riffs of all time. Also not to be ignored, the solos from Loomis and future Cannibal Corpse guitarist Pat O'Brien are as stellar as ever. Again, Warrel's vocals compliment the riffs like a match made in heaven. Brutally metal heaven.
10. Who Decides
Awesome song right here. It has the apocalyptic heaviness of the other songs on the album, but with a seriously awesome and melodic chorus. The lyrics clearly speak of ethics, and who decides (olol) what is right and what is wrong. The solos are still amazing, and the vocal melodies in the chorus are mind-numbingly win.
BONUS SONG: Sacristy
This song is from Jeff Loomis' solo album, Zero Order Phase. It is easily the highlight of the album. It's the song I would recommend to anyone who believes that Loomis' playing is just mindless shredding (*cough*COLE*cough*). It's gorgeous melodic variation after variation, and then the familiar brutal guitars kick in, allowing Loomis to bring up the shred knob and melt faces all around the planet. Astounding.

9. The Obsidian Conspiracy
Another one of those sure-to-be-classic songs that just owns your face the first time you play it, and it never lets up. The riffage is fast and brutal, like it should be. Warrel's vocals shine just as they usually do. The chorus is phenomenal and catchy. The solo section is astounding and jaw dropping. I'd dare to call it a perfect song.

Amazing song. Absolutely nothing to complain about. The only problem is, it's good for pretty much exactly the same reasons that all the other songs are good. :lol

One thing that totally sets this song apart from all the others is the solo section. The riff leading into it, and the variation on said riff during the actual solo is pure win. The chorus is another favorite.
6. The Heart Collector
My favorite Nevermore ballad. This one has it all. A decently heavy chorus, quiet verses letting Warrel stretch out, and an AMAZING vocal melody in the chorus. Fantastic.

Man, this song is just fantastic. An epic in every sense of the word, this song is the perfect example of why Nevermore is so good. It has everything, from the riffs and vocals to the solos and melodic sections. Amazing.

Alright, now we're really getting into the hard hitters. River Dragon is a pretty straightforward song, following the verse chorus format obediently. The reason it's up here is because, well, it's so damned heavy. I'd go so far as to call the opening riff one of the heaviest riffs I've ever heard, period. Loomis' solo exercise near the middle is awe-inspiring as well.

Both are great lists, when a band like Nevermore puts out so much quality material you're bound to have a great Top-list. I still can't grasp why some of the DNB-songs aren't mentioned. I'd like to see songs like 'No More Will' and 'Poison Godmachine' swapped for some of the more modern NM-songs in their live setlists.

25. What Tomorrow Knows
The first Nevermore song I ever heard. I loved the doomy pace, the twisted, powerful vocals and the more AIC/Pantera/MH, style riffs and grooves really took to me. I love Warrel's vocals on this one, his emotion is sensational, and some tasty fitting lead work from Loomis.
24. Emptiness Unobstructed
One of the better tracks on TOC. A great chorus and verse, which both really remind me of Believe in Nothing. I like this song mainly for the chorus, it just soars, Loomis of course doesn't disappoint. Love the Enemies of Reality style lick in the solo.
23. Garden of Gray
This is a great song. Nice crunchy riffs, and a little melodic. I love Warrel's vocals in this one also, especially in the pre chorus. Loomis shreds this one up too. A great, underrated Nevermore track. Reminds me a little of King Diamond style.

22. The Lotus Eaters
Here's one from the amazing Dreaming Neon Black album. A beautiful slow tune which is extremelly haunting. The atmosphere that this track gives off is immense, amazing chorus.
21. Dead Heart in a Dead World
I love the intro, it's got so much atmosphere. My favourite part is when it breaks into the main riff at around the 1:30 mark. An amazing thrash riff that tears heads off, it also shares itself with a section of TGE, which I don't mind it all.

Classic Nevermore! The middle Loomis section is by far the highlight of this song. Loomis shows why he's one of the best, most tasteful shredders of the last 20 years.
19. The Psalm of Lydia
A cracking tune. I love how the main riff shifts between 4/4 and 7/8 time, a great touch. The duelling between Jeff and Steve is astounding. Love the acoustic lick going into the solos too.

This song just fucking stomps all over you. Love the first minute and Jeff's little solo is very tasty. Nice chorus, and Warell sounds killer on the verses. I really like the structure of this song also, very different and fresh.

Best track on the new album, very reminiscent of Born or TGE, good stuff. Excellent chorus too and of course Loomis is shredding his ass off. I wish all of the album had this quality and quantity of guitar playing.
16. Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday
A Nevermore ballad. I adore the soaring chorus on this one, very smooth. I love this one though, simply because of the guitar solos, Loomis here really writes a song within a song. His soloing at 3:10 just gives me chills.
15. Poison Godmachine
I think this was the second Nevermore song i heard, and it really has stuck since then. Another of many highlights on Dreaming Neon Black. I love the brutality on this one, and the riffs are excellent.

Very political song with a very strong message. Warrel delivers it really well. Love the pounding riff from the get go, and again Loomis really takes charge when it's solo time. The key change into the solo is brilliant, and when it changes again, that's just even better. Loomis does one of the best most cleanest sweeps I've ever heard in that second solo. Excellent chorus and I love the vocal harmonies Warrel does during it.
13. The Final Product
Brutal song. Love van's double kicking in this one before the solo it's so heavy. The line "Did they die for religion or the government" really gives me chills. Loomis' tapping solo at the start of the solo section is my favourite part. How how slides into the same tapped note is just amazing!!!

Amazing song, I really get a Megadeth vibe of this one. The middle section makes this song, it is amazing, Nevermore showing a bit of DT influence. I especially love after all the chaos of the middle section it just kicks back into the main riff and keeps kicking your ass.

I think the third Nevermore song I ever heard. Amazing ballad with a slight bit of venom to spice things up. I love the "We will ever see the shape of tomorrow" line in the chorus. Brilliant solo from Loomis again.
10. I, Voyager
A simply crushing song, brutal riffs all the way through and a very humorous video that went with it. Warrel's vocal harmonies in the chorus are amazing. I especially love how the last two lines of the second first come in early and off time, that's brilliant. Loomis' sweeping in the solo is just Godly.

I love this song. It's such a brutal way to kick off this amazing album. The main riffs are asskicking!!! Loomis kicks ass again! BEYOND WITHIN!!! Love it.

Nevermore's best ballad. The chorus is perfect, absolute bliss. Loomis' soloing again is a highlight, he perfectly portrays the mood and feel of the song, this man really knows how to make his guitar sing! Love the key change in the last chorus.
7. The River Dragon Has Come
Love the clam intro, really portrays the title of the song well IMO. The riff of course is crushing. Love the doom like feel in the verses. Loomis' diminished sweeping patterns in the solo gives the perfect imagery. Then when he harmonizes it my head explodes. The second part of course kick ass.
6. I Am the Dog
A bit of a controversial choice here, but I love this song. Loomis' theme solo is magic, I love this man!! Warrel of course gives an emotionally charged performance, with confusing, troubling lyrics. You can really feel his pain about his loss when he is singing this, you can tell he is upset, confused and disturbed. Amazing song!!!!!!

Amazing opener. I love the groove through the entire song especially in the verses with the staccato riffing. The chorus is so majestic and haunting. The solo of course flawless. That riff at 1:54 is possibly one of the best riffs ever, I just wished that used it a lot longer.

BRUTAL!!! Love the pure venom and hatred in this song, it's so underrated. The riffs just kick me ass. Loomis again!!!! The solo is just bliss, this man knows how to shred tastefully. his chromatic ascend at the end of his solo is just mind blowing. Love the structure in the second half too. Just when you though Dane couldn't be any more pissed, LOL. "I shit the truth , into the engines of hate!!"

By far Nevermore's best track. This song is an encyclopedia of amazing riffs, one after another. This is also just epic, from the start all the way through the 9 minutes it just builds and builds, every section you feel the intensity rise, a perfect epic. The middle section is by far some of the best riffs I've ever heard. Loomis' Jason Becker inspired sweeping towards the later half is just awe-inspiring. Amazing lyrics that really make you think and question things, Warrel does an amazing job. How the song ends is just perfect IMO, a perfect song.

It's got everything that is great. It's crushing, chunky, melodic, has great riffs, great lyrics, great melody lines etc.
It's all there. Not saying that isn't there with other songs, but it is head and shoulders above a lot others for me.
