Like the title says.
Best - 3 at Prognation '08
Worst - Into Eternity on the Chaos in Motion tour. Jesus christ they were terrible.
-
Best - Queensryche opening for Def Leppard in September 1988. Wasn't all that familiar with QR at the time and became an instant fan by the time Revolution Calling wrapped up.
Worst - tie: Warrior Soul opening for Queensryche in November 1991 / Primus opening for Rush on the Roll The Bones tour...
-
I thought Presto Ballet were pretty awesome when they opened for DT back in June. (I guess I could include DT opening for Maiden this year, but had seen them the night before headlining, so it was harder to think of them as an opener).
3 was pretty when they opened for PT a couple years ago.
I can't think of any terrible opening bands off the top of my head. Lauren Harris maybe for Maiden's 2008 tour, but I honestly wasn't really paying attention.
-
Best known band-Machine Head opening for Metallica
Best relatively unknown band-Z02 opening for Alice Cooper
Worst opening band-don't know the band but they were a threesome from canada, I think, and they opened for The Who...I think. I tried to forget it. And no, it was not Rush.
-

What kind of stuff did they play? There was a trio that opened for The Who when I saw them, but they were decent. Rather derivative of Zeppelin, but still decent.
-
Best opening band: Frost*, for Dream Theater. Leeds 2009. I'd've been happy to pay the admission for Frost* alone - but followed by Dream Theater playing a full not-even-a-festival-or-nuffink set? Beautiful, that.
Worst opening band: The Noisettes, for Muse - somewhen or other in 2006. They weren't a crock of shit per se, but they certainly weren't grand. They weren't an opening band so much as a thing that happened for a while before Muse played.
-
I don't remember. I probably saw them on the same tour you did. October...26th I think, 2008.
-
Best:
-Dream Theater for Maiden in Paris 2005
-The Scorpions for Judas Priest in 2004 (they were actually the better act too :metal)
-The Folksmen for Spinal Tap in 2009 :lol
-Tyr for Alestorm in 2009 (probably the best out of this list)
-Bigelf on Progressive Nation 2009
Worst:
-Funeral For A Friend for Maiden in 2003 (they went down badly in their home town, go figure)
-Whoever the hell were supporting AC/DC in Wembley Stadium in 2009
-Some nobodies from the area that brought their girlfriends to cheer for them when I last saw Alestorm for the second time in 2009. Alestorm closing with Lazytown's You Are A Pirate more than made up for it though :metalol:
-
Alestorm closing with Lazytown's You Are A Pirate more than made up for it though :metalol:
Oh my god that is epic.
I don't remember. I probably saw them on the same tour you did. October...26th I think, 2008.
Probably. I want to say they were a local LA band, but I don't remember.
-
Worst:
-Whoever the hell were supporting AC/DC in Wembley Stadium in 2009
Was it The Answer? Some band from Ireland? I thought they rocked.
-
Worst was definitely whatever band I saw opening for Live in Kenosha, WI. They had one song that is forever stuck in my head, where they kept singing "put the gun down" over and over and over and over and over... I can't believe we left our curling practice early to catch that. :(
Best I'm not really sure. Peter Frampton was a lot more fun than I had expected, so probably him.
-
Worst opening band-don't know the band but they were a threesome from canada, I think, and they opened for The Who...I think. I tried to forget it. And no, it was not Rush.
I know what band you are talking about, and yes, they were dreadful. I've never seen an opening band get such a horrible reaction.
MGMT opened for Paul McCartney last year.... weird match up, but they are great.
-
Best: Queensryche opening for DT, PN09
Worst: Job For a Cowboy opening for Megadeth, Gigantour 2008
-
Worst: Down opening for Metallica. Anselmo is a terrible singer.
Neutral: The Sword
That's all I've seen.
-
Best: Zappa Plays Zappa at PN09
Worst: Torche at Coheed & Cambria
-

They were horrible weren't they? But speaking of horrible reactions, I just remembered what was probably the worst opening band ever, and I'm just waiting for Birch to come in. The band that opened for Alice in Chains sucked so bad and got such a bad reaction, the singer told the audience to go fuck themselves. :lol
-
Anselmo is a terrible singer.
Actually tbh, Phil has one of the most brutal voice in metal tbh. Actually. tbh.
-
Best:
- From Monument To Masses
Worst:
- Torche
Funny enough this was at the same dredg show.
-
Worst: Victims opening for Municipal Waste
Drives like Maria opening for Motorhead
Can't chose between those two.
they were both horrible
Best: The Sword opening for Metallica
-
Worst: Victims opening for Municipal Waste
Drives like Maria opening for Motorhead
Can't chose between those two.
they were both horrible
Best: The Sword opening for Metallica
The Sword is pretty good. The performance I saw wasn't exactly that great though.
-
They were great on the show I went to
-
Best. Queensryche opening for Kiss on the Animalize tour 1984.
Marillion opening for Rush on the Power Windows tour,1986, and they played the whole Missplaced Childhood album.
Dada opening for Sting on the 10 Summoners Tales Tour. 1993
Worst. Mountain opening for Triumph on the Thunder 7 tour.
I can't remember the band that opened for Porcupine Tree on one of the Deadwing shows that I went but they had a xylophone player and after 2 songs I wanted to kill someone.
-
Another one...Like a Storm opening for Creed.
Emo metal...ugh.
-
Best:
1. Dream Theater..opening for Iron Maiden..The Ritz, New York City 6/8/92
2. Accept..opening for Iron Maiden..Providence Civic Center 6/2/85
3. Ted Nugent..opening for Aerosmith..Providence Civic Center 3/18/86
Worst:
1. Faster Pussycat..opening for Alice Cooper..Boston Garden 11/17/87
2. Savatage..openiong for Dio/Megadeth Providence Civic Center 12/28/87
3. Bachman Turner Overdrive..opening for Van Halen Providence Civic Center 8/22/86
-
Best:
3. Ted Nugent..opening for Aerosmith..Providence Civic Center 3/18/86
Worst:
3. Bachman Turner Overdrive..opening for Van Halen Providence Civic Center 8/22/86
Awesome, and why?
-
Awesome, and why?
Ted Nugent came out and kicked so much ass. He blew Aerosmith off the stage. The band was tight and it was just all around awesome.
BTO was horrible. When the highlight of their set was the sinbgalong part to Takin' Care Of Business..you know it sucks. It was like they were filming one of those Public television fundraising DVDs...And Van Halen sucked too. Especially compared to the smokin' David Lee Roth/Tesla show 6 months later!

Was it BTO or the way they were live? Like the raw music, or the show?
-
Was it BTO or the way they were live? Like the raw music, or the show?
Well, it was everything. The music was boring, they were visiually boring. It was the wrong band to be opening for Van Halen. But of course, VH never brought anyone decent out on the road with them in those days. I think they were afraid to get shown up in any way. I went to the show, but I'm not a Hagar fan, and I thought 5150 sucked. It's actually one of my least favorite concerts I have ever seen.
Like I said, the DLR/Tesla show kicked all sorts of ass. Although VH may have won the war, Round 1 easily went to DLR..(off topic..sorry!)
-
Best: Anathema for Porcupine Tree. I'm probably a bigger fan of Anathema than of Porcupine Tree and it was my first time seeing them live. Saw them headlining a few months later. Honorable mentions: Symphony X for Dream Theater, Pure Reason Revolution for Porcupine Tree and Demians for Anathema.
Worst: Non-Divine or something like that. They were opening for Sonata Arctica and they were pretty bad. Kamelot also knows how to get annoying openers. And they usually have more than 1, which is extra annoying.
-
Best:
Dream Theater opening for Iron Maiden (this was the obvious choice) - June 2010
Warbringer opening for Obituary - September 2009
Rajas opening for Tool. These guys got a lot of crap that evening, primarily because they "weren't Tool" and all the fans just wanted Tool. I thought they were really good. - July 2010
Arsis opening for Exodus and Arch Enemy - February 2010
There are several others, but those are the most notable at this time
Worst:
Suicidal Tendencies opening for Lamb of God - April 2009
Mutiny Within opening with Arsis for Exodus and Arch Enemy. Oh god were they terrible - February 2010
In This Moment opening for Megadeth - September 2007
High on Fire opening for Opeth - October 2008
High of Fire opening for Mastodon and Dethklok - October 2009
Converge opening for Mastodon and Dethklok - October 2009
-
Best:
- From Monument To Masses
Worst:
- Torche
Funny enough this was at the same dredg show.
Why do awesome bands like dredg and Coheed love shit bands like Torche?
-
Converge opening for Mastodon and Dethklok - October 2009
God dammit lat.
-
Converge opening for Mastodon and Dethklok - October 2009
God dammit lat.
All the vocalist did was grunt "UGHUGH". They were terrible.
-
I'm going to light you on fire with my mind.
-
Please do.
-
Best: Alice In Chains, opening for Van Halen.
Worst: Lenny Kravitz, opening for The Cult
-
Best:
The Pretenders opening for the Rolling Stones
Coheed opening for Heaven and Hell (although I didn't go to see the headliners...)
Worst:
Echoes of Eternity opening for Symphony X
High on Fire opening for Opeth
-
Worst:
-Whoever the hell were supporting AC/DC in Wembley Stadium in 2009
Was it The Answer? Some band from Ireland? I thought they rocked.
I hated The Answer so they are my choice for worst. Shooter Jennings was bad when I saw him with Alice in Chains but I blame the sound....and his voice.
-
Best: Baroness, opening for Isis :hefdaddy (and Baroness were even better than Isis, but I will stop talking before Sigz gets angry)
Best: Pain of Salvation, opening for Dream Theater (I'm not a huge fan of PoS but they did put on a damn good show with lots of energy)
Worst: Contrive opening for Opeth (Err, this 3 man band sucks balls. Generic heavy/prog rock. No thanks
Worst: Contrive opening for Devin Townsend (WTF this band AGAIN? how many dicks did they suck to open for these two bands? AGAIN they were shit this time as well)
Contrive not Converge fuck :censored I wish it was Converge :metal
-
Best: Alice In Chains, opening for Van Halen.
That sounds like an unusual combination.
-
Best-DT FOR IRON MAIDEN
Worst-BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE FOR IRON MAIDEN
-
BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE
Umm... Bullet isn't THAT bad. I'm sure you've seen way worse..
-
Converge opening for Mastodon and Dethklok - October 2009
God dammit lat.
All the vocalist did was grunt "UGHUGH". They were terrible.
YeAh MeTaL sUx ^_^
HaNa MonTaNa forever =D

That's definitely the entire musical spectrum, right there. Gruff metal and Hannah Montana.

I know you're obviously kidding, but how the fuck does this even make sense?
-
Worst: Down opening for Metallica. Anselmo is a terrible singer.
Anselmo is amazing. :-\
-
BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE
Umm... Bullet isn't THAT bad. I'm sure you've seen way worse..
Oh I've seen worse...but for Maiden, that was a brutal 45 minutes...
-
Best -Opeth for Dream Theater
Worst - Engel for Dimmu Borgir and The Ocean for Opeth
-
I can't think of the best, Into Eternity was quite great though.
As far as worst, that obviously goes to one of the many local acts that some national acts get to open for them. They can be HORRIBLE. I have no idea who they were though.
-
I actually enjoy Into Eternity normally, but Stu was not having a really, really bad day when I saw them. Really none of the guys were doing that well.
-
Best - Opeth for Dream Theater
The Human Abstract for Protest the Hero
Worst - The Chariot for Protest the Hero
-
Worst:
-Funeral For A Friend for Maiden in 2003 (they went down badly in their home town, go figure)
Bands supporting Maiden who aren't metal are never going to go down well with the majority tbh. FFAF rule all the same.
Oceansize and Opeth would be the best I've seen.
Frost* are the worst I can remember.
-

My brother saw The Murderdolls open for Maiden in France. Talk about a bad reception. Sometimes the opening bands are hated just because they suck balls :lol

Yeah but FFAF aren't one of them cause they're great :tup

I will use the google to dig deeper into this band.

It's not that the crowd didn't like them, although that didn't help their effort. They were really sloppy and uninteresting too.

They were like the best post-hardcore band around in 2003! Although if they were sloppy live in those days that's a different matter. They've been pretty tight whenever I've seen them.
-
Best: Exodus for Megadeth on the RIP tour
Worst: That Gotika band or whatever it's name was that opened for Metallica on the U.S leg of the World Magnetic tour.
-
Worst: That Gotika band or whatever it's name was that opened for Metallica on the U.S leg of the World Magnetic tour.
You better not mean Gojira
-
:lol
I want to see this unfold
-
I hope he means Gojira.
-
Best: Alice In Chains, opening for Van Halen.
That sounds like an unusual combination.
It was an awesome combination.

Wasn't that F.U.C K. tour? I saw that too.

-
Worst:
Any of the 3 opening bands for Symphony X in 2008
Into Eternity for DT
Mutiny Within for Sonata Arctica
Best:
Zappa Plays Zappa/Bigelf/Scale the Summit for DT
DT for Iron Maiden
-
Worst: Unexpect for DT (PN09)
-
Worst: That Gotika band or whatever it's name was that opened for Metallica on the U.S leg of the World Magnetic tour.

Yep, them.
But let's all be friends ;D

Fail of the year, anyone?
-

Yep, them.
But let's all be friends ;D
I want you dead right now.
-
:flame:
They might be a good band but the live performance I saw sucked beyond recognition, their set was continuos noise and all the songs sounded identical.
So yeah they might be a good band, didn't hear any of their studio stuff to be honest so I can't judge that.
-
Best: Opeth for Dream Theater, though that's kinda cheating and will never ever be beaten.
Worst: Sitting through 3 awful bands for As I Lay Dying. Don't remember their names.
-
Fail of the year, anyone?
Heavens no, not even close.
-
Fail of the week perhaps.
-
Rage. Indescribable rage.
-
Not counting local bands....
Best - Dream Theater, opened for Maiden this Summer. Slapped the taints off of Iron Maiden
Worst - System Of A Down, opened for Metallica as part of the Summer Sanitarium tour (2000). They were horrible.
-
Worst: That Gotika band or whatever it's name was that opened for Metallica on the U.S leg of the World Magnetic tour.

Yeah but the fact is that Gojira are incredible live, that's the point :P
-
Worst: Unexpect for DT (PN09)
-
Best: 3 opening up for Dream Theater. Such a fun set for barely knowing their stuff.
Worst: Queensryche opening for Heaven and Hell. Bleh.
-
3 best:
1. Symphony X opening for Dream Theater. Mostly because i was such a big fan at the time. The sound was horrible, but Russel Allen completely owned the show. He acted like it was a full-blown Symphony X-concert, and i think even the ones there who didn't like the music was very impressed by his performance.
2. Mastodon opening for Iron Maiden. I had never heard them before at the time (it was during the Leviathan-period), and i thought it was so wierd and heavy, yet very interesting. This concert made me a fan of them. Was completely blown away by Branns drumming.
3. Avenged Sevenfold opening for Iron Maiden. When i saw them i had only heard rumors about them being a terrible emo-pop-metalband. I was completely blown away by their performance. The music was so-so. Something i really enjoyed, something i didn't care for, but they played their asses off, and i started listening to them right after that.
The worst:
Lauren Harris opening for Iron Maiden. Crappy, uninteresting music and a lame performance. She used half the time talking about where we could buy her album and promoting her myspace-page. After the first two songs i went to the bathroom and hanged around in the bar-section of the arena trying to avoid the music and her annoying persona.
-
Best - Dream Theater opening for Iron Maiden on the Final Frontier 2010 North American tour
Worst - A lot of people said Lauren Harris opening for IM on the Somewhere Back In Time tour was terrible, but I don't remember if she was good or not, so I'd say Middle Class Rut opening for Alice In Chains on the 2010 North America tour
-

She's hot though. I would have stayed and endured the music just so I could look at her.

-
The best was probably Zappa Plays Zappa. They were interesting and unique. The worst by far was Between the Buried and Me. Chevelle is the only other really terrible band I can remember seeing. The rest of the warm up bands I've seen weren't really noteworthy.
-
Let's look at the concerts I've seen that had opening bands:
Date – Headliner (Support)
2003-07-07 – Sum 41 (Jersey, Flashlight Brown)
2005-09-05 – Green Day (Jimmy Eat World)
The openers here all sounded relatively similar to the headliner, and that was the style of music I was into at the time, so no complaints. *shrugs*
Date – Headliner (Support)
2008-08-17 – Rufus Wainwright (Odetta)
This was a show at a folk festival that I went to with a friend. I'm not really a huge fan of folk but she paid for the tickets so it really wasn't a big deal. Like all folk, it was easier to appreciate live, but neither act really blew me away, even by folk standards.
Date – Headliner (Support)
2009-08-12 – Dream Theater (Zappa Plays Zappa, Bigelf, Scale the Summit)
2009-11-26 – Protest the Hero (Iron Giant)
2010-05-07 – Porcupine Tree (Bigelf)
2010-07-06 – Iron Maiden (Dream Theater)
I was a huge fan of all of these opening bands; great shows, no complaints. (Although I will admit that my memory of Iron Giant is a little hazy because I was drunk during their set. I sobered up in time for Protest the Hero, though.)
So yeah, I guess I've never really had a bad experience with an opening band.
-----
And just for the heck of it, here's a list of shows I've seen that didn't have opening bands:
Date – Headliner
2010-07-11 – Rush
2010-07-13 – The Cat Empire
2010-07-31 – Matt Mays
2010-07-31 – Telfer
-
Shit, Lauren Harris is hot...
her music still sucks though

I have found the girl of my dreams. She is perfect.
-
If you don't open for Iron Maiden, we are not a match.
-
If you don't open for Iron Maiden, we are not a match.
If you are not Steve Harris' hot daughter, we are not a match.
Oh shoot, she's only 2 years older than me. Perfect again.
-
She's a lot hotter than Steve, eh.

-
Best: DT opening for Iron Maiden. They were better. :P
-
Not really an opening band as it was a festival slot, but I caught Gorgoroth at Bloodstock this weekend. Officially the worse live performance I have EVER SEEN BY ANYONE. They really were THAT bad...
-
worst = shinedown. fucking terrible, to say the least
best = btbam
-
Best: DT opening for Satriani or Queensryche
Worst: Kill Hanna opening for Lacuna Coil. Horrible, horrible, horrible performance. I cannot find anything kind to say about them.
-
Best: I've seen a lot of great openers, but my favorite would have to go to Opeth (PN '08).
Worst: The worst that I can remember was mewithoutyou opening for Thrice and Coheed at different times. The first time I saw them, I honestly thought they picked up a bum off the street to use as the frontman. He doesn't really sing, moreso rambles/screams. I was genuinely perplexed. Their stage presence was fine, but I just wasn't diggin' it.
-
Rage. Indescribable rage.
I understand, friend
To counter the fail, my fav opening bands were
1. Gojira, opening for Trivium
2. BTBAM, opening for The Dillinger Escape Plan
3. Cannibal Corpse, opening for Children of Bodom
4. Mendeed, opening for Avenged Sevenfold
and the worst would be American HiFi, opening for Sum 41. Remember this song? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FevZoMknl3M
Yeah, them
-
Oh yea, I saw Volbeat opening for some band some time. Never heard of them before that, I was quite impressed despite it not really being my thing.
-
worst = shinedown. fucking terrible, to say the least
No. Get out.
-
Oh, I also saw some band called Saosin opening for some band once. I thought they were some horrible local band, but appearently they're a horrible national band. I actually wrote the sound man a little note asking him how much it would cost to turn all of their mics off. He said he felt my pain.
-
I've also seen them. They were playing before Porcupine Tree at the Download festival.
Pretty damn horrible.
-
worst = shinedown. fucking terrible, to say the least
No. Get out.
i wish i did do that, they really were bad. but luckily avenged sevenfold came on to end the fail.
-
Worst: Lacuna Coil. >:(
-
Oh yea, I saw Volbeat opening for some band some time. Never heard of them before that, I was quite impressed despite it not really being my thing.
Volbeat is really cool :tup.
-
The Doughboys.(one of the best openers ever)
-
Oh, I saw Volbeat open for Metallica. Wasn't mindblowing but I did like their drummer.
