In this thread we discuss and appreciate thrash music in general.
but also bands (other than Metallica and Megadeth who both have their own threads)
I wanted to start this thread because of my experience at an Anthrax show two days ago.
It was Incredible. It confirmed my love for this genre of metal.
So let we all appreciate....
:metal
-
I only dabble. Other than Megadeth and Metallica, the only other "thrash" bands I listen to much at all are Testament and Flotsam & Jetsam, both of which have some excellent songs.
-
Yeah I pretty much only listen to Megadeth and Metallica (mostly Megadeth these days). But have you guys heard of Prototype? Their album Continuum was fantastic.
I'm open for any recommendations.

Don't know them.
Checking it out.
If you want recommendations I'd suggest the other two of the big four: Anthrax and Slayer but also Exodus, Testament and a recent band called Municipal waste

Obviously, I've listened to the other 2 of the "Big Four", and I saw Slayer live, but I wasn't really impressed at all.
I've heard Exodus talked about here a lot, I'll have to check them out along with the other 2 bands you've mentioned.

*Awaits Ultimetalhead*
I love me some good ol' thrash metal. Slayer, Megadeth, Kreator, Exodus, Testament just to name a few.
Annihilator's Kraf Dinner (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fX0uQ6o0xk) might easily be one of the best thrash songs out there.
-
One of my favorite thrash bands is Sepultura.

Chaos A.D. is a fucking :metal :metal :metal album.

I love thrash. My favorite thrash band as of now is Exodus, specifically their current lineup. The last several releases have all been amazing. Seeing'em live again in a few weeks, after a 2 and 1/2 year lull of support slots of theirs that I regrettably passed up or had to miss.
I of course am a fan of all the obvious band (Metallica and Megadeth actually being lesser favorites).
Anthrax was a favorite of mine in high school. Also enjoy Slayer, Testament, Over Kill, Forbidden, Sepultura, Kreator etc. And I also enjoy a lot of the modern thrash revival bands like Warbringer, Havok, Evile, Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste etc.
-

Don't forget Beneath the remains and Arise

Arise is by far their best album.

Saw Exodus last February, and I MIGHT be seeing them in a couple of weeks as well. Toxic Waltz is one of the best thrash songs to witness live. Though I wouldn't say I'm extremely fond of their current vocalist.
Anyone here a fan of Warbringer? They are without a doubt the best modern thrash metal band out there.
Severed Reality (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJqFe36gSgw) kicks some god damn ass.
-
Yeah, I mentioned Warbringer in my first post. Great band. First saw'em open for Exodus back in February of '08. They annihilated. One of the best openers I've ever seen.
-
I saw them last year opening for Obituary. They made the show just 10x more awesome. I can't wait to see them again opening up for Nevermore this September.
-
Serisouly guys. Prototype. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTQntRcrdhk
-
They sound pretty good, but not what I'd define as "thrash".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNO6hdesJ-Q
-
They define themselves as 'progressive thrash metal'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S-6pUmRTIE
and that was a very good song.. Which Exodus album would you recommend?
-
Fabulous Disaster is my personal favourite, though Bonded by Blood is a thrash classic.

So does Nevermore

Those vocals are awful.
-
I. Will. Destroy. You.
EDIT: You aren't the only person I've showed Nevermore too who didn't like the vocals. They grow on some people, but sometimes they just don't. If you ask me, Warrel Dane is one of the best in metal. He's fucking fantastic.
-
WTF?
Warrel is a fantastic vocalist.
As for Exodus albums...Atrocity Exhibition is my suggestion.

Living proof right here. I hated Warrel's vocals for a long time.
Thrash is the best them.
-
Iced Earth is the best them.
-
Iced Earth is the best them.
They barely count as thrash imo. More like power metal.
They're still awesome.
-
Iced Earth (especially the earlier stuff) is quite thrashy, but I too wouldn't call then definitively a "thrash" band.
I put them and Nevermore and Kamelot into their own "melodic metal" category.
-

Nevermore? "Melodic metal"? I wouldn't go that far. I just keep them within the progressive (thrash) metal subgenre. It suits them best. Almost everyone wants to come up with a different argument for what genre they fall under.

I wouldn't call them either. How about just "heavy metal"?

Alice in Hell & Never, Neverland (inb4 Enter Sandman)
Basically this. Never, Neverland is an awesome album. I'd stay aware from their more recent work however. From what I heard (from UMH) they are awful. Particularly in the vocals.
-
Annihilator's recent stuff would be perfectly acceptable if it wasn't for that god-forsaken vocalist. But yes, Never Neverland is the best, followed by Alice in Hell. Criminally underrated thrash right there.
-
One of the best thrash songs ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qiu3Xg83YSk
Although I love F&J I think after the first 2 albums they kind of gave up on the thrash sound and went for a more traditional metal sound
This video is pure cheese but also pure Thrash by them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsGHlTLmCP0&feature=related

Overkill
Even after 25 years these guys still bring it

-
Some Other thrash bands that don't get alot of mention
Death Angel
Metal Church
Kreator
Sacred Reich
Nuclear Assault
S.O.D.
Suicidal Tendencies
-
Agreed with all of those. ^
-
Anyone listen to Shadows Fall and/or Death Angel?
-
Shadows Fall :metal
The Art of Balance is the best them.
-
Not a fan of Shadow's Fall.
Now Kreator on the other hand are :2metal:
-
Saw Kreator last year in Slovenia. Was MetaL. Shadows Fall aren't a thrash band, more like metalcore.
Municipal Waste are a good shout, although they verge on hardcore and punk, but for a good no fuckin nonsense modern day thrash band you can't beat Evile. And they're English! :metal :metal I was lucky enough to see them last year just a few days before their bassist died, and it was one of the most intense shows I've ever seen. Hopefully they'll return with another great album soon. They play so freakin fast! :metal :metal
Thrasher

Cheers, should I consider going to see them live if I like them or would it be a disappointing experience?

Municipal Waste is terrible, as is Shadows Fall. Evile, however, is incredible.
-
I saw Municipal Waste live once. Can't say I was at all impressed. A bit too punk/hardcore for me.
I have however seen both Evile and Kreator live before. Both kick ass bands.
-
Anyone listen to Shadows Fall and/or Death Angel?
Death Angel was sorely under rated in my opinion ....Act III was an awesome album

I think Evile are better than Slayer. They took everything I like about Slayer and just improved on it, definatley the best them :metal

I completely agree.
One of the main problems that I have with Thrash Metal is that it gets too repetitive. That's why I haven't found anything interesting in Destruction yet: they don't add something original to the genre and all the songs sound the same. However, there are some bands that even when sounding kinda generic are still fucking awesome. Speaking of which....
This thread needs moar Sodom.

I think I like them because they were one of the first bands to merge Thrash Metal with Death Metal. And Death/Thrash Metal is one of the best fucking Metal subgenre unions of all time.
-
One of my favorite genres of metal. I listen to Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Nevermore, Iced Earth, Municipal Waste, Kreator, Exodus, and Testament, primarily. Seen Metallica live, seeing Megadeth, Slayer, and Testament in five days, and seeing Iced Earth next month.
-
Anthrax isn't on this leg of the tour. It's Testament opening.
-
Anthrax isn't on this leg of the tour. It's Testament opening.
My bad, I meant to say Testament. I might be seeing the second leg though, and if I do, I'll be going backstage because my friend's Frank Bello's nephew and Charlie Benante's great nephew :metal.
-
Fucker. I sadly have no connection to Anthrax that I'm aware of.
I wonder if I'll even get a chance to see them within the next year. They haven't played New England in any lineup since opening for Priest back in the fall of '05. That's lame.
-
Although it'd be sweet to get backstage and meet Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax (without having to pay for VIP packages), I'd be seeing almost the same show from Megadeth and Slayer, as they'll both still be playing their landmark 1990 records, so I'd really be paying to see Anthrax play Among The Living, and probably no other songs, because they're opening. We'll see as it approaches though.

MAX CAVALERA Says PAULO JR. Didn't Play Bass On Any Early SEPULTURA Recordings
https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=150369
Revolver: SEPULTURA in their current lineup recently announced they'd be playing the album "Arise" in its entirety. But weren't you the primary writer for SEPULTURA around then?
Max: At home I did the same style of writing I do with SOULFLY. I give credit to the guys. Igor came up with a lot of the original beats, like to "Territory". As we got better, he played better. The only musician that didn't improve much at the time was Paulo [Jr., bass]. I think the first album he recorded for was "Roots". Everything else was me and Andreas [Kisser, guitar] doing the bass because he couldn't really play that good. But we were friends, so we were like, "Yeah you can stay in the band, we won't kick you out. When we play, we'll just turn you really down so nobody hears."
Uhm...lol. I'm not sure I fully believe this.
-
One of the best, if just my favourite, crossover thrash bands is D.R.I.

Read about that yesterday, not a big fan of Sepulture so it didn't mean much to me.
-
The bass was never really a prominent factor in Sepultura's music. I'm looking for some live vids of the BTR era to see if Paulo's just going through the motions.
Also, thrash metal = the best metal.
-
This isn't all that uncommon. Iced Earth and Danzig did the same thing (and Yngwie is up front on his records). The live bassist rarely plays on records it seems. To save cost and time of course, as studios are expensive, and if the bass is solely following the root notes of the guitar, by bother? I know its the principal of it all. But it happens. A lot.

MORE RECOMMENDATIONS! MORE!

Wish I could give recommendations about the current thrash bands, but having grown up with the entire initial movement, I really haven't found any of the new bands to my liking.
Lots and Lots of great recommendations in this thread already for the old school thrash bands..can't really go wrong with any of them

warbringer another great band
-
Almost two years ago, Exodus played a ~1,000-person venue that I go to a few times a year, and Warbringer was the opener. I was in Disney with the marching band though.

Voivod's Dimension Hatröss. There is and are no words.

If you can find any of these I highly recommend them
Whiplash....any of their 3 release but the first 2 are mandatory
Exhorder....These guys were a huge influence on Pantera (although Pantera will never admit it)
Onslaught....Great/Great Riffs but like most of the albums from this era the production suffers
Sacrifice/Razor/Exciter...Canadian Thrash at its finest

I dig many Overkill stuff.
-
I dig many Overkill stuff.
Overkill is one of my favorite bands of all time..but rather than go into a long winded rant about how great they are and why I love them so I'll just say I'll be seeing them yet again in April with Accept and doing the meet and great with both bands .
-
Damn... It sucks living in a small central/southeastern european country most artists don't care about at all. :-[
I think Horrorscope and The Years of Decay are my favorite tracks, from what I can remember. Anyway my friend has a few of their CD's so he'd put them while we would play PES or something.
Not really thrash metal tracks, but I digged them the most.
-
My favourite Overkill song is Devil By The Tail. It made me want to learn bass guitar! Bobby Blitz is a good reminder that in the increasingly heavy world of metal, there is still room for an actual singer in a heavy band.
-

And Bobby is one of the nicest guys in the world, I've met and hung out with him numerous times, he really appreciates his fans.....One of my favorite lines in a movie of all-time...Get Thrashed Documentary..they are interviewing Bobby and they ask him...what's a typical Overkill fan like? he replies " I don't know, probably 45, an accountant, 2 kids living in the suburbs" with the straightest face...the look on the interviewer is priceless...Bobby than follows it up with 'ohhh you mean back in the day....black jeans, t-shirt and hightops"

I'm thinking about getting into Voivod. Anyone here who knows them well enough to recommend?

Voivod is a tough band to nail down...since your talking Thrash War and Pain...RRRoooooaaarrr or maybe Killing Technology ...they than branched out and started mixing prog with metal..they covered Floyd/King Crimson and the likes, they had an industrial sound for an album or two...they have constantly changed the approach, The production on the early albums is lacking, but than again alot of the Thrash bands from that time suffered from it
-
Listening to War and Pain right now. :metal This must be the only debut thrash album that has audible bass.

I'm on a huge thrash kick right now. So far today I've listened to Overkill's "The Years of Decay" and "Ironbound", Death Angel's newest release, and Dark Angel's "Darkness Descends".
FUCKING THRASH :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
-
Listened to "Under the Influence" today.

Listened to "Under the Influence" today.
That's a weird one. I really don't care for it.
-
Yeah, I only own Under the Influence and The Years of Decay by Overkill, and I much prefer The Years of Decay.
-
Definitely get Ironbound. It's the closest they've ever come to topping it.
-
Kreator's "Pleasure to Kill" is one of the greatest thrash albums ever. Just saying.
-
And I'm still on the "Hordes of Chaos > Enemy of God" bandwagon.
-
A little thrash here and there is great.
Out of the big 4, I like both Metallica and Slayer (mostly Metallica), but Megadeth are not that special, and Anthrax hasn't really clicked at all.
Apart from those, Trivium has a couple of thrash-ier songs, and I really like them, so yeah. :)
-

Testament, Anthrax, Overkill and Death Angel i just soiled my pants :metal

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/samiam667/criminally_underrated_thrash_pt_2___
They are the absolute bibles of thrash. Every single album I've checked out so far kicks ass.
-
What does anybody think about Exodus's last three new albums? Rob Dukes has got to be my favorite vocalist for them, as he just fits Gary Holts riffage like a charm, and Tom Hunting is a monster on drums.
-

Is the rest of their catalogue thrash? Cause that definitely wasn't and was actually pretty enjoyable.
-
I have their early stuff. It's kind of on the crossover side, like S.O.D. or M.O.D.

Okay, I looked up more, and I sortve enjoyed that funk more than their thrash lol
-
I just checked out Forbidden's Omega Wave. Holy shit, this album is great.

I don't listen to a lot of thrash, but
when I do back when they were for a lil while, Iced Earth created the greatest (in my and no one else's opinion lololol) thrash albums ever in Night Of The Stormrider.

Greatest thrash album is easily Rust in Peace. It isn't even close.
-
Rust In peace is alright. I haven't listened to it in a long time though. Maybe it's time to put it on my iPod.

RIP is great, though I like Peace Sells even more. Really, Deth's easily my favorite of the Big 4.

Since I think only UltimateHead responded in my Believer thread, I'll post em here too for the hell of it:
"Idols Of Ignorance." The riff at 2:25 is one of my favorites of all time. As I like to say, if there really was a literal Metal Militia, they could march to this.

Yeah, I definitely don't know that much thrash. However, I'm too poor and there are other bands I tend to buy first. I don't like to download either. So ask me in a few years and hopefully I will have heard a lot of what the genre has to offer :) I do pick up the occasional Overkill CD, I have 4 of their albums, also Megadeths and Slayers discography, and Metallicas. I do quite like thrash, its a good genre (particularly progressive thrash).
-
Progressive thrash, eh?
May I suggest Voivod?

You may :tup
I will add to my ever growing list of bands to get into.

Sylosis.
Very much new-school thrash, and some would argue too polished to fit under the thrash umbrella at all, but a great young band with a load of talent. Seen them twice already this year and planning on at least once more. Should be good!

I'm a big fan of Iced Earth too.... and also like Slayer, Testament, Kreator, Sepultura and Megadeeeeeeth!!!
Seen most of them live... Dying to see Iced Earth....
I never really saw Iced Earth as Thrash. I always considered them to be a natural evolution of NWOBHM. I always felt like they were much more balanced, containing Thrash, Progressive, and classic Heavy Metal elements. Granted, I haven't listened to the majority of their discography.

Annihilator is actually one of my favorites atm. Jeff is awesome with riffs.
Here's some Prog/Deathrash my friend showed me the other day (Nocturnus)-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLJsEtmnjoA
There's also a band called Razormaze whose free EP I downloaded a while back and fell in love with. Only 3 songs, but it's great.
-
Jeff is awesome with riffs.
He's in my top 3 thrash riffmakers (along Gary Holt, my personal favorite and Mustaine).

Jeff Waters is up there as well, I like you.

Jeff indeed is a master riff writer....biggest knock is the constant turn over in the band
As far as Riffs go...Kurt Vanderhoof of Metal Church has written some great riffs....even when he stepped away from recording and touring he still wrote a majority of the music

Couldn't agree more haha

Since I think only UltimateHead responded in my Believer thread, I'll post em here too for the hell of it:
"Idols Of Ignorance." The riff at 2:25 is one of my favorites of all time. As I like to say, if there really was a literal Metal Militia, they could march to this.
https://grooveshark.com/#/s/Idols+Of+Ignorance/2pUbw3?src=5
Dark Castle, u really should listen to this band if you haven't already ^

So here's an awesome thrash band I just found. They sound a lot like Vektor with some Enslavedand Death mixed in. Can't believe I didn't hear about these guys sooner. :metal

Yeah, not really digging this track. There's one pretty good riff near the end but that's it.
At this point I'm looking forward to the new Havok and Testament albums WAY more than the new Slayer album.

So I'm not even looking forward to this album but hot damn that is the best slayer album cover ever.

Planning on picking this up

Did not know that new Slayer was coming out, love the album cover. Iron Maiden and Slayer releases within a week, nice. Heard the title track and sounds about average run of the mill track. I'll wait for the album.
-
Now...is this the one that's going to include Hanneman's final recordings? It was my understanding that he not only had written three songs, but had actually started some recording before he died.
-
This new Slayer album is pretty fuckin' good. I'm really liking it. Although too many KK solos. Jeff is quite missed in that department. Gary's solos are actually quite impressive but he only gets a few.

I'm probably a week away from getting this but definitely looking forward to it.
I've honestly never thought much of Slayer's guitar solos anyway.

Didn't know you were into Slayer Tim.
You're right, their solos are pretty laughable at times, but some have pure energy and emotion IMO. I've always been so impressed how they can play so off in their solos but still make them somehow fit. They use so many different modes in odd places, diminished, harmonic minor phyrgian and sometimes just random shapes all in the one solo at times I think, but still put out a something worthwhile. I like their agression in the whammy bar department too.
This is a strong album. At first I actually thought it was pretty shit, but some of the riffs here are amazing and carry the album. The title track is fucking incredible, Tom sounds amazing here, which I have never really said too many times before.
-
I was into Slayer back one day. Between '87 & '94 I saw them about a half dozen times. After Divine Intervention I kind of lost track if them. With Lombardo back I tried their last two albums but I just didn't care for them. Almost they they tried to out brutalize some younger bands. I just did not like the delivery at all, especially vocally.
But the songs they've made available from Repentless have been great. Sounds like classic Slayer.
-
This new one is really good after two listens, I like it better then the last couple of albums.
Regarding Slayer solos: I alwaysthought that they were more about noise, aggression and energy and less about melody and structure and sometimes it fits the song and sometimes its pretty bad.
What's the difference between chainsaws and Slayer solos? Chainsaws have more dynamics.
-
This is definitely their best album since God Hates Us All.
-
Bought the Amazon mp3 of the new Slayer when I got home from work today.
Holy shit, this is awesome!!! :metal :metal
Lots of it reminds me of South Of Heaven, which is one of the most headbangingest albums I've ever heard.
-
Yeah man. I'm still spinning it in the car and really enjoying it. I can see the South of Heaven influence. Fav songs are; Repentless, Vices and You Against You, but everything is solild. I got the CD/DVD with the full wacken concert which is great too.

I think designing a guitar with your own blood is the very definition of metal! :lol :metal

Dunno if I can talk about it for the next month but it is a pretty sweet album :metal

New Soufly is out!
The last album of theirs that I loved was Enslaved (GLADIATOR! :metal). Savages followed that and stunk, and I was just got burnt out on Max's music for a while. He's always churning out albums and alternating between Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy every few years and it was just too much, with little differentiation between them.
This new one (Ritutal) is ridiculously heavy and thrashy. It sounds really fresh to me after some time off and not just a Max-by-numbers album.
-
If you've never tried Tourniquet, this is imo one of their best songs in a while. Very talented musicians, the drummer writes most of the riffs, and oh yeah: Chris Poland guesting on guitar!!! Peep the second verse for the "signature Tourniquet" sound, which to my ears is pretty uncommon, although DT ripped it off for a few measures on Panic Attack.

I want to get this book now.

I reckon Testament were the first thrash band I got into.............around Practice What You Preach era. Took me longer to get into Metallica as I was only just gradually getting into the heavier side back then and needed a red hot lead guitarist and Kirk didn't make the cut :) So even back when I was 12 I was a guitar snob .
-
Wow for me, I was just the opposite. I could not get into Testament at all back in the day. I considered them a second rate Metallica. I found them and their sound so one dimensional.
Contrary to what Bosk said, I actually didn't get into Testament until much later. It wasn't until they released The Formation Of Damnation. This latter part of their career has been amazing.
-
Second rate Metallica! My, sir, now that is good humor, yes it is. :lol I totally agree though, it's stunning how good they've been since (and including) TFOD.
-
in 1989, they were indeed second rate Metallica. There's a reason Metallica is the standard bearer. It's because they were just better.

Metallica was my first metal band. Didn't know any different regarding Kirk so thought he was pretty good. Then I basically discovered everyone else then quickly realised, 'actually, this guy is really shit.'

Oh I believe it was a common belief back then. It just makes me laugh. Metallica doesn't matter past RTL. Testament's discography is immeasurably better and more consistent :lol

MoP is overrated (you got Battery, you got MOP, that's it), AJFA isn't that good (you got One, that's it), TBA is even worse (the radio hits aren't bad but they absolutely pale compared to RTL Metallica). RTL was their crowning achievement, they blew their load on it. And everything after TBA up until they wrote Spit Out The Bone is terrible. :loser:

No, it's because they were just first. Get your facts straight.
-
Maybe that's part of it. They were basically the face of thrash metal in the 80's but you have to remember that the rise Metallica was a slow burn. Sure, they had 3 albums before Testament released The Legacy, but those early Testament albums are really one dimensional to me, musicwise and vocally. I never considered Testament in Metallica's league, honestly.
Metallica's songwriting was so much better than your average thrash band. Hell, in some circles, Metallica stood so alone that they were even referred to as Alternative.

I agree with that. As I said I got into Testament at a time when thrash wasn't my thing at all and I got into them almost purely because I loved Skolnick's solos.........then I got into Megadeth because I loved Friedman's solos :lol If I look at the early Testament albums there was usually one or two killer tracks I focused on and plenty of filler whereas Metallica had much more consistent songwriting. Once I did get into the heavier stuff more consistently then yeah............I rated Metallica higher as a band in spite of Kirk.

My copy is out for delivery. Just waiting for it to drop at my front door.

One listen down and it's pretty good. Love the black metal influence in Osiris. The last track is a weird way to finish the album though.
Skolnick is such a beast.
-
I'm waiting for the Easter Bunny to bring me my Amazon money. I haven't heard it yet, but I'm definitely ordering it this weekend.
-
I'm liking the album a lot. Very consistent, although there is nothing really new to be found. I would say that I feel like there are very few moments they go 'all out' though and it perhaps lacks stand out songs.
Still awesome but I'm not sure how memorable it's going to be in the long run. Also Catacombs is cool but very odd as a closer, feels like an intro track.
-
Testament's record is kicking my ass. I'd agree with TSM that there's nothing "new" per se, but it's how they combined almost every element of their sound into one record that really has snapped my head to attention. It's the same feeling I got when listening to Fates Warning's Theories of Flight -- that record had nothing NEW in terms of style, but it culled from the band's entire discography and presented something fresh. That's how Testament's Titans of Creation is to me.
-
Dream Deceiver, from the new album, takes a cue from this song: https://youtu.be/Qd8uElHUKPE

Metallica were to 80s Heavy Metal what the Beatles were to 60s Rock. Despite having some obvious influences they were easily 2-3 years ahead of the pack. So much so that they were in a league of their own. Not only did they do it first, they did it better.

I can see what you are saying here. Only listened to it once so we'll see how it goes.

Finally got around to the new Testament today. Man, this thing slays!
Can I just say, DiGiorgio and Hoglan. What a rhythm section! Nice to really hear Steve on this record and Hoglan is just a beast.
-
Yeah, the bass on this album sounds insane.

Because of downtime, I’m working on creating the ultimate 10-song thrash playlist. The ultimate album. Of course my regular list is a lot longer but I like the challenge. Here’s what I have so far to narrow down, and I welcome suggestions. The only requirement is it has to thrash hard and furious, no mid-tempo groove stuff.
Chemical Warfare (live version)
Angel of Death
From the Past Comes the Storms
Beneath the Remains
Slaves of Pain
Rattlehead
Take no Prisoners
Last Rites/Loved to Death
Fight Fire With Fire
Damage Inc
Dyer’s Eve
Strike of the Beast
Piranha
When the Sun Burns Red
Under the Guillotine
Assasin
Crying for Death
(above 2 from Morbid Saint)
There are other candidates from the major players, and I still have to get some tracks from Sadus, Razor, Demolition Hammer, Artillery, Sodom, etc etc. So if you have any “must have” candidates, please list them.

So, a random thought here. Some metal site tweeted out about anniversary of the debut album by the band Coroner. It just showed in my timeline and I can't find it now, but it doesn't matter. The tweet mentioned that the band was known for being 'the Rush of thrash'. That intrigued me. Sampled some stuff from them tonight and, wow, does this stuff sound good!
After sampling stuff from all of their 5 albums I was sold. They were all reissued in 2018 and, of course, all seem to be out of print or just really hard to get here in the US and those that I could find were a tad pricey. Then I find that Laser CD has 3 of them for a nice price and I got the other 2 from Amazon stores.
Anyone here familiar with these Swedes?
-
Know the name but never checked them out. I'll check them out.
-
The last 2 Coroner albums showed up. Their final album, Grin, is totally different from the rest of their catalog. More groove and industrial based, I guess.
Mental Vortex showed up today and I am listening to it now. Wow, this is some quality thrash. These guys are technical and do some stuff that I don't know that you hear much in thrash. Solos are also not widdly-widdly like Slayer. I guess this album is where they left some of the speed behind but it is heavy and technical. Loving it.
Looking forward to the first 3 showing up. Probably next week as they were all the ones I bought from Laser CD.
-
Back in the day, I had the first three albums. But No More Color was by far my favorite. That album is AMAZING! I still remember Read My Scars and get it stuck in my head a lot. But at some point I got out of my thrash phase in the early 90s and I sold a bunch of my CDs including that one. I really need to get it again because that album was incredible. I never got around to listening to their last two.
-
Got new Havok today. Insanely good!!!

Listened to a handful of tracks over the three albums they have on Spotify. Earned the band 1.5 cents. ;D
Sounds pretty cool. A bit like early Slayer.

Coroner are amazing, but they're Swiss, not Swedes!

They're one of those band that slipped my radar for the longest time, but I caught up with their back catalogue when their last studio album, Born to Perish, came out last year. Amazing band indeed. I got to interview Schmier a few weeks ago to promote their new, KILLER live album, and he was a great chat. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgSsVO5zpqc

I did, and the album preceding. Love the sprinkling in of blast beats, and some great guitar playing.

Coroner is sexcellent. I randomly found out about them back in 2001 I think. Great band!
-
I know Thrash likely isn't a hugely popular style of music on a mainly progressive forum but a bit surprised that I couldn't find a thread on the band Power Trip and the shockingly sad news about the lead singer's (Riley Gale) death... He was only 34... :( :'( I fell in love with the band with their Nightmare Logic album and looked forward to many kick ass future releases...

That's awful.
I have Nightmare Logic Saved on my Spotify.

Never heard of them but thats just awful.

Been on a bit of a Slayer kick recently. God damn, God Hates Us All is just a beast of an album and some of my favourite Slayer lyrics. They were fucking pissed off when they recorded this!

One of my fav from them. So heavy and brutal.

It really is. My favourite lyrical outtakes from the album:
"Man made virus infecting the world
Self-destruct human time bomb
What if there is no God would you think the fuckin' same
Wasting your life in a leap of blind faith
Wake the fuck up can't ignore what I say
I got my own philosophy
I hate everyone equally
You can't tear that out of me
No segregation separation
Just me in my world of enemies."
"I keep the bible in a pool of blood
So that none of its lies can affect me."
"Tear your fucking eyes out
Rip your fucking flesh off
Beat you till you're just a fucking lifeless carcass
Fuck you and your progress
Watch me fucking regress
You were made to take the fall, now you're nothing
Now you're nothing
You ain't fuckin' shit."

On a Testament kick right now. They were one of my favorites as a teenager. Going through their discography and I forgot how much I like the 80s/early 90s stuff. Haven't heard their last few albums but I've heard good things about them.
-
80s and 90s thrash is what I grew up with and I haven't binged on that stuff in years. I oddly did hear some early 90s Anthrax the other day and it was fun. I do need to revisit soon.

Testament were always my favourite thrashers, their recent discography is very strong but there latest album is amazing, the production, mix and songs is almost perfect. The only down side is it's a few songs too many with a couple of less than staller tunes.
-
I just did that with Testament's discography a few weeks ago. I usually just go to my favorite albums from them, but I pretty much listened to every single one of their albums, which led me to remember why I love so many of those records.
-
Yea I've been doing it chronologically, mostly one album a day. Finished up Demonic earlier. Definitely not death metal, just darker thrash than they usually do. Probably haven't listened to that album in 15 years. I like how their sound progressed from the 80s through the early-mid 90s when the production values got better with each album, but they also got heavier, and more aggressive. I also like the groove in the band's sound, how it becomes more prominent on each album. I know Skolnick left after Ritual and came back on First Strike Still Deadly, but I always liked the middle period when he wasn't in the band. They made some interesting music on those 3 albums.
-
Man, I forgot how much The Gathering album just slaaaaays :metal

What's your opinion on First Strike Still Deadly? I actually consider it one of their best albums but I see many Testament fans pretend this album doesn't exist, because it's a collection of re-recorded songs from their first two albums.
-
I love Testament and I love First Strike is Deadly. As far as I'm concerned The Big 4 should include Testament over Anthrax, without even a contest.
I think Testament are the only thrash band from the 80s, whose sound evolved and stayed relevant, heavy as fuck and never felt like they were trying to be relevant. I think their albums from the late 90s, and throughout the 2000s easily kept up with the bands breaking through in the metal scene at the time. I mean bands like Lamb of God owe a huge amount to Testament. They arguably have the most consistent discography as well. I fucking love them and should also do a full run through of their albums :metal
-
I think Anthrax and Testament have been the most consistent of the big
four five as time has gone on.
Slayer were my favourite overall but were largely unlistenable to me beyond a certain point, due to a massive dip in quality. Metallica, the same. And Megadeth were always just meh, for the most part.
I prefer Anthrax by quite a long way but, yeah, those guys and Testament have been pretty great all along in my book.
-

When it came out, I loved it. The production was excellent and it was fun to have some re-recorded classics since I didn't own the old records at that time. The two that they did with Zetro are fun. But the tempos of the songs are way too slow and it just takes something away from every song. They were actually supposed to remaster and re-release the first two albums, but the label wouldn't let them. So they got around the rights issue by re-recording them. I just wish they kept the tempos at a faster pace.
I rarely listen to it anymore, aside from when I decide to go through every album, like I just did. If I want some older songs with better production, I put on Live in London instead.
-
Been into Testament since The New Order. Finally got to see them on the Slayer farewell tour...
Skolnick is so amazing. Playing these impossible solos while making it look so easy with a big grin on his face.
Now that I'm more mature, listening to the old albums, I can hear what a terrible drummer Louie Clemente was.
-

Interesting. FSSD was my first Testament album, I loved it, and thought it was great 80s thrash with modern, professional production values. When I eventually heard the first 2 albums, I thought it was a sloppy mess with the drummer rushing the tempo often and the rhythm guitars trying to keep up, along with bad sounding production (to my teenage ears). This is when I was getting into Metallica and Megadeth and thought Kill Em All and Killing Is My Business was the gold standard on how you do thrash metal. Over time I have come to appreciate the first 2 albums and really like the cheap 80s production values now.

Speaking of underrated bands, I think Flotsam & Jetsam are the unsung heroes of the first wave of thrash. Somehow they're only know nowadays for being "Jason Newsted's first band", but they're much more than that. I interviewed the whole band a few weeks ago, and it will be published in their profile this Friday, to promote their upcoming album. Check out this teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJnnccis2ZU

I remember listening to some F&J when I was in HS but never really got into them a whole lot. No Place For Disgrace was the only album I knew of theirs and the only one I've ever listened to.
Is Pantera groove-thrash? Cowboys From Hell and Vulgur Display of Power is up there with the best thrash metal.

I'll give a shoutout to the underrated Regular People. That first minute is insane.

The funny thing is, although I knew F&J was Jason's first band, I never gave them a listen until Cuatro came out. Definitely an evolution from where they started. However, I played the shit out of that album when it came out. I'd love to know how they got to write a song with Chris(topher) Cornell on that album. Drift was a pretty solid follow-up, too.
-
Been listening to Gama Bomb the last coupla days. Great!
As a guy who is often tired of metal's straight-faced approach this totally fits the bill.
The whole band are really great. Amazing riffage and leads but the singer is fantastic. Souza/Belladonna/Biafra and i Just LOVE it when he throws on the Halfords!

Cuatro has aged really well, but I remember feeling like it was pretty weak compared to the previous couple of albums. Drift was solid. That's it. For my money, it was the weakest of the "Original Six", or the first six albums.
EDIT: And just like that, I check my Release Radar on Spotify, and we have a new F&J track, Burn The Sky.

Listening to Testament's Brotherhood of the Snake album, it's good, solid, but doesn't seem to stick out as much as the band's previous handful of albums. I hope their newest album is a little better.
-
I actually think Brotherhood of the Snake is my favourite Testament album. I love the early albums, but I think Brotherhood keeps the same level of riffing but with much better production, and you can’t go wrong with Skolnick still playing lead.
-

This album guys, seriously...

Evil - Possessed by Evil
This is the latest album from Japanese blackened thrash band Evil. It's like one of those 80s thrash albums, that inspired lots of black/death metal bands. They're like Kreator, or... well, Possessed.
I'd highly recommend checking these guys out, great album.
-
Edging a teensy bit toward death metal, but amusing thrash like Gama Bomb, are Ghoul. Bloody great fun!
Dungeon Bastards
Splatterthrash
Both are great. The surf guitar breakdown and appearance of theremin on the latter are just fantastic.

One of the surprises from 2020 for me - the self-titled debut album from Ormskrik
Official full-album stream still here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RahYPPMFUwk
Blackened-thrash from Norway - SO good. Vocals are a bit more extreme than typical thrash (not too crazy, though), but the album can be surprisingly dynamic (and melodic) amidst the almost constant aggression.
Opener Occultness is an ok appetizer, but the goodies imo really start with the second song, "Destroyer of Worlds". After an opening riff that could fit in a classic Exodus album and an aggressive verse, the blackened influences start creeping in with the chorus. Then, another super-cool riff (and drumming) around the 1:45 mark and, a few seconds later, an acoustic interlude that builds up to a melodic, almost old-school Metallica section. Brilliant.
There's plenty of other tasty stuff next - "March of the Dead" (which in the last minute or so launches into a Disposable Heroes kind of riff). Then "Descend to Madness", which starts epic and keeps going back and forth between nasty thrash and tremolo-blackened riffing (with some very headbangable breakdown towards the end).
More great riffs in Hecatomb and The Morbid Arrives before a fantastic ending with Eye for an Eye - again thrash and black influences, then morphing into a truly beautiful finale, with harmonized Metallica-esque guitars and phat bass lines weaving in and out, and finally leaving the stage to acoustic guitars. Again, brilliant.
Highly recommended!
-
Sounds good, I'll queue it up :metal
Anyone checked out Possessed by Evil yet?

Anyone checked out Possessed by Evil yet?
I just did! It's great, lots and lots of fun. Very old school in the best possible way...love how the drums and the solos seem about to derail but never do ;) The guitar work is actually excellent. And that ending with Evil Way of Life...
Good stuff, thanks for the recommendation!

Anyone into the new Evile album, Hell Unleashed? I am enjoying it, but I do miss Matt Drake's vocals. Ol's are not bad, but I prefer Matt's. I think it is a solid album with some great riffage though. Always really dug these guys, and Infected Nations is one of my favorite thrash albums.

I tried it as I’d never listened to them, but I didn’t even get past the first song. I thought the riffs were cool but the vocals are so shit.

Another recent thrash album I really enjoyed - this one is from 2019:
Inculter - Fatal Visions
I'm not seeing anything official on Youtube, but you can sample stuff on the album's Bandcamp page (and of course streaming services)
Thrash metal from Norway, again - but this is more classic, in the vein of early Kreator, Slayer and Sepultura. The latter especially for the vocals, which do sound like a young Max Cavalera, and the toms, which sound endearingly similar to those in Schizophrenia.
The sound and mixing are GREAT on this one. And the drumming is too - aggressive and super-dynamic.
The mode is primarily "high speed", but there are slower, evil Slayer-like moments interspersed here and there. The songs are consistently good - check out the opening salvo of Open the Tombs and Impending Doom for a taste...and then Endtime Winds and closer Through Relic Gates, with a more ominous sounding first half leading into a furiously fast ending.
-
Inculter - Fatal Visions
Yeah, that was a nice listen. Real old school for sure. I Saved it on Spotify. I think I'd have to really be in the mood for it though.
Impending Doom is a great track!

New single from Kreator:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVfEW5mgrd0
This is surprisingly good. To the point and with lots of energy. I have paid little to no attention to Kreator in...20 years...? What I have randomly heard here and there sounded like a tired rehash of their early days, after their "detours" in the 90s.
-
Enjoyed the new Kreator single, can't wait to hear the full album. I didn't love Gods of Violence, it's my least favorite of their albums since Violent Revolution. Sounds like they stepped it up for this one. Been a longtime Kreator fan, and I enjoy a lot of the 90's stuff as well.

Me too! Some interesting material there, off the beaten path for sure. I really like Endorama too, although it's pretty much a gothic-metal version of Kreator ;D
-
I LOVE what Kreator has been doing since Violent Revolution. Killer thrash, killer production and incredibly ferocious. The last handful of albums have been fantastic and I'm looking forward to the new one!

I love Endorama! Some really good stuff on that album. When I decided I wanted to get into Kreator in the early 2000's, I went to the record shop to grab some. The first 2 albums I bought were Extreme Aggression and Endorama. I had heard Extreme Aggression, but picked Endorama without hearing it. I loved both, but they sound quite different...

I've just found this all encompassing thrash metal playlist...
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1DVU0Zy0B5MX5B6ZG7ohfO?si=h3pOpuJyQTeDHbl_JErX0w&utm_source=copy-link (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1DVU0Zy0B5MX5B6ZG7ohfO?si=h3pOpuJyQTeDHbl_JErX0w&utm_source=copy-link)
It has everything basically. I've been sticking it on shuffle and it's chucking so many bands I've never heard of, amongst all the incredible thrash I do know.
If you're itching for something new, probably a good place to start.
-
Does it have Nuclear Assault? I declare any playlist missing Nuclear Assault to be invalid. ;D
-
Does it have Nuclear Assault? I declare any playlist missing Nuclear Assault to be invalid. ;D
Yes! Not only does it have Nuclear Assault, it also has Nuclear, Nuclear Omnicide, Nuclear Salvation, Nuclear Warfare and Nucleator! It's pretty impressive honestly.
-

Love Nuclear Assault. ;D
-
Two classic thrash bands that have come back with absolute belters this year? Megadeth and Kreator!
Obviously fair bit of talk about Megadeth's latest (rightly so), but also the latest Kreator is just great.
Currently listening again and it may actually be my favourite Kreator album, it's that fucking good. I find it incredible bands can release albums this good, at this point in their career!
-
Jeez, I didn't take to the Kreator at all, and I really liked the last couple. Maybe I need to try it again.
-
I have always wondered if there was an inherent burnout factor with thrash.
I followed Kreator from all the way back when Pleasure to Kill came out. I still think they peaked with Extreme Aggression. But I thought Coma of Souls was a huge letdown, and now I always see everyone else hail it as their masterpiece. I may have just been burnt out on thrash at that point considering I had been ravenously following all those bands since late 85/early 86.
-
I've never been able to indulge in long periods of thrash. It's something I kind of randomly jump in and out of.
-
There's a band that does bluegrass thrash and I've got to tell you, I love it!
They are called The Native Howl.
-
Probably have mentioned them before, but just happened to be listening today to one of the best (and extremely underrated) thrash bands out there: Believer (probs underrated bc they were in the christian scene in the early 90's... though their lyrics are pretty indecipherable and they even toured with bands like Bolt Thrower)
my fave song by them is "Idols of Ignorance" and i have always said that if the concept of the phrase "metal militia" were to be distilled down to one riff and one riff only, it would be the riff at 2:24 in this song, which i will link to below.
the whole album, though -- Sanity Obscure -- is really a masterclass in technical thrash.
THE GOAT METAL MILITIA RIFF: https://youtu.be/Lvwzbq0z0jQ?t=143
-
ADDITIONAL AUTISTIC INFODUMP BONUS DOUBLE-POST lol
AND ALSO A QUESTION???
soooooo if like tech/progressive thrash, you should really also peep Tourniquet, another band underrated bc of their christian nature imo (much more overt in their lyrics but so talented musically):
"Gazing At Medusa" (ft. solo from Chris Poland): https://youtu.be/x6oD01gzp70
i especially love their signature riff pattern at the 2:02 mark, which i dont know if that kind of riff has a musical name but they do it a lot and it's always so cool to me. Another example (time-stamped):
- "Perfect Night For A Hanging" https://youtu.be/r298kgdQmCk?t=158
lastly -- RIP to Tourniquet's late drummer/band leader Ted Kirkpatrick, who died unexpectedly a few months back -- incredible drummer who also wrote basically all of the bands guitar parts as well...
back when DT was holding auditions in 2010 I really wanted Kirkpatrick to get a shot at it (not that he would have even been interested necessarily), but he def had the technical skills to hang in DT and would have been a really interesting addition bc of his neoclassical tech-thrash style
*peep instrumentals like "Viento Borrascoso (Devastating Wind)" and "Immunity Vector" if you'd like to gauge for yourself how good and also innovative of a drummer he was:
https://youtu.be/egbhTXgqOzE?t=19

anyways thanks for coming to my autistic infodump / "TED" talk (lol pun somewhat intended)

Figured I'd ask this on the thrash metal thread...
I have a pretty significant hole in my thrash "education" when it comes to Nuclear Assault.
I know little to nothing. I'm planning to stream some of their stuff (they don't seem to have a particularly lengthy discography anyway), but since it's fun to discuss, what is the opinion of the connoisseurs here on DTF? Any guidance on what is considered their best material?
-
The first three albums are all excellent. But to my ears, Handle With Care is their masterpiece and should be in the discussion for top 5 thrash albums of all time.
Some people prefer their second album Survive, but I feel HWC shows them at their songwriting and production peak.
EDIT - there’s a pretty sharp drop off in quality after HWC. And I just picked up their final EP Pounder and was pretty disappointed. Some ok ideas, but it sounds like an unfinished demo.
-
Thank you, JDude!
I remember reviews of Something Wicked on music magazines when it came out, and it was basically ripped to shreds...I will definitely check out their 80s albums...
-
FWIW, I never did check out their 2005 comeback album Third World Genocide and I’ve always felt a bit guilty about that. Because in 1989, they were definitely one of my favorite bands. I feel like I should try and find that album on my next haul. Anyone else know if that album lived up to the first three?

I absolutely love Game Over, their debut, and everything up to and including Handle With Care is also great, imo.
I also didn't get to Third World Genocide until a lot later. Seem to recall that it was pretty reasonable, but I never went back to it.
But, yeah, the early stuff is fantastic. I love how on Game Over the songs all start with fast chuggy riffing and THEN the drums come in about 15% faster. 🤣 I first learned to play fast, thrash rhythm guitar by playing along to this album over and over. 🙂
-
The new Overkill album is AWESOME. They are incredibly consistent.

Nuclear Assault are one of my many thrash blindspots. I'm somewhat familiar with some of their more famous stuff. I'm listening to Game Over now, as it happens.

Got some big news over the holiday weekend. Death Angel and Forbidden will be playing two special Christmas shows together in San Francisco in December. Pretty pumped. I'm a huge Death Angel fan (went to their Xmas show several years ago and and it was amazing), and while I'm a newer big fan of Forbidden (that has just gotten back together with a new singer), their guitarist, Craig, is a great guy and we're acquaintances who had a mutual friend and we've connected because of that.
Wife and I hoping to go to both shows. Tickets on sale in August, I believe Craig said. It'll be at the Great American Music Hall in SF.
I have Forbidden's Omega Wave album, and the classic Twisted Info Form and love them both. Sounds like Forbidden is just playing a festival or two this summer and spending the rest of the year leading into those Christmas shows writing and recording a new album. If it's anything like their last one (Omega Wave) from 10 or 11 years ago, I'll be very pleased. :metal
-
Hopefully Smyth will still be a part of it, he elevates everything he's on.
-
My eyes and ears are ready for a sonic onslaught today - I'll be checking out Death Angel, Sepultura and Kreator in Toronto tonight! Looking forward to it...there's been some great bills lately, but this one will be special. I haven't seen Sepultura live since 1991!
-
Death Angel is one of my favs. Enjoy! :metal

They all CRUSHED it...Death Angel played a really short set though, only six songs. All good...there was so much metal through the night that my ears are still ringing. I dare say that Kreator was the "winner" of the night. Their stage props and lightning were incredible! As a Brazilian I'm always proud to see Sepultura get a lot of attention in North America, and their set was great as well, with Eloy's mesmerizing performance absolutely stealing the show.
-
Kreator’s latest was easily one of the best thrash albums of ‘22. I’d love to see them live, I feel their aged really well and are still putting out relevant thrash. Alongside bands like Testament they are one of th me few OG thrash bands who are still killing it.

Yeah, the album ia really cool. I like it when bands with a lot of history still manage to put out material that does justice to their classic period. Kreator, Destruction, Death Angel, Overkill and others are still relevant and releasing great stuff.

Been on a little bit of a thrash kick this week, mainly been listening through Testament's back catalogue, so thought I’d rank my favourite thrash bands, just because…
1. Metallica
2. Megadeth
3. Slayer
4. Sepultura
5. Testament
6. Kreator
7. Suicidal Tendencies
8. Municipal Waste
9. Send More Paramedics

19. Evil
20. Possessed
21. Coroner
22. Pizza Death
23. Chemicide
24. Tankard
-
Even though they only released two albums, for the debut alone, Vio-Lence needs to be on that list.
I’ve been digging back in to some old-school thrash over the last few days, and I still can’t believe how unbelievably good Eternal Nightmare is.
-
Nice! Kudos for including Coroner, although they would be significantly higher on my list. A fantastic band, until the very end (Grin might not be your usual thrash, but it's an incredible album).
One that I would add - Anacrusis. Their thrashier beginnings are a bit messy, actually, but that's another band that finished amazingly strong with their last album, Screams and Whispers (1993).

I haven't heard a lot of these bands, for me I'd absolutely add Overkill, Metal Church and Machine Head. Though I haven't listened to much of the later Metal Church albums.
-
Not sure how deep I could go on an all thrash list, but my favorite would be Flotsam & Jetsam.
-
I’ve never really considered Machine Head thrash, much like I wouldn’t consider Pantera thrash (as some seem to). If I did though, they’d be high up the list.
As for bands like Overkill, Metal Church and Vio-lence, I’ve heard a few of their albums but nothing has stuck enough at this point.
Edit: Also, while we’re on it, here’s a cool little thrash EP…

In a bid to give Exodus a bit more of a chance (I’ve never really listened to anything outside of their few classic albums), I’ve been listening through of some of their other albums today. Currently on Force of Habit. It’s not bad and might be the best Exodus album I’ve heard yet.
In many ways it seems as Exodus started doing what I’ve always loved Testament for doing in the late 90s (go for a heavier groove metal kinda sound). This album sounds really good, at least the reissue does. I’ve always kinda written Exodus off as a thrash band that never really pushed the genre forwards in the way my favourite thrash bands did. It seemed to me they were always playing catch up and never did. This one definitely sounds good enough to revisit though.

Eternal Nightmare is the only album under consideration. But it’s really really REALLY fantastic. Their second album just didn’t do much for me beyond a couple songs.

On Friday, early in the morning, Forbidden announced a "secret show" as "TWISTED INTO EVIL" on Sunday afternoon, July 16. I was able to nab a couple of tickets and my wife and I went. What a great rebirth for Forbidden. So much energy, and Norm Skinner, the band's new singer, taking over for Russ Anderson, who has retired, was phenomenal. I took a vid of "Step By Step," but that's all I got, as this was a crazy, absolutely crazy, old school metal show with a pit that took up most of the bar's floor.
Check it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exxzT2bdUn8
You can hear me singing the chorus pretty clearly. LOL. oops. I got excited. I had to hold the phone as far over my head as I could, as the place was packed and the stage was low. Plenty of video out there from other sources though.
:metal
Grabbed a setlist, and some other goodies. Nice to see some young people there too.
-
I love tiny little shows like that! It's cool that they focused only on those first two albums, which are both badass.

My favorite Exodus records are Bonded by Blood and then the last three with Zetro - Tempo of the Damned, Blood in Blood Out, Persona Non Grata.
The Dukes records are cool, but just don't grab me as much as those albums do.

I have a feeling a Forbidden show would massively disappoint me.
I think Green is far and away the best album they ever did. Forbidden Evil is obviously a thrash classic and I love that as well. I just thought Twisted sounded a bit more commercial overall. I mean, all the thrash bands started to find commercial success by mellowing their sound a bit, so I guess I don’t blame them. The title track is EXCELLENT.
But the first time I heard people say that Green wasn’t a thrash album, I was floored. I’d be willing to bet that album has a higher average BPM than Ride the Lightning. How can anyone argue that an album with Phat and Over the Middle isn’t a thrash album? Even on the most classic original thrash albums, not EVERY song goes at high speeds.
-
Gonna queue up the Vio-lence album today, and also Green by Forbidden. I know I’ve listened to Forbidden’s first two albums at least into double figures, but never checked out Green.

Agreed. And Russ (IMO) was the greatest voice of any thrash band…PERIOD. Sad to see him retire, but I imagine “it’s better to burn out than fade away.”

Just curious what you thought about Souls of Black and The Ritual. I've actually been listening to those 2 Testament albums a lot lately. I've always enjoyed The Ritual a good bit, even with the slower tempos. It's a solid listen overall. I never really gave Souls of Black that much of a chance, but I'm liking it a good bit more now. It has a few clunkers, but some really good stuff as well. The first half of the record is really good.
-
The Ritual and Souls of Black are fine, I think Testaments early career is all pretty similar in quality. Practice What You Preach and The New Order are probably my favourites from the early part of their career. I way prefer everything from the late 90s onwards though. I think they are one of the few early thrash bands where I prefer their latter albums to their early.
In other thrash news, been listening to more Exodus and Forbidden this week, along with Exhorder.
-
Practice What You Preach will probably always be my favorite Testament album, but I really enjoy most of what they have done since Formation forward. Dark Roots of Earth is great modern day thrash, and one of the best post 2000 thrash albums.
Never been super into Exodus, but I have been listening to them a good bit lately.

Really cool stuff. There are a few more bands I need to check out that may be similar. I’ll post here if they’re any good.

re: Testament - love them. The Ritual is a great record. Like many bands, tried slowing it down a bit. It was good, even if it didn't catch on like some others.
Practice What You Preach is generally the one I reach for from them, along with Formation of Damnation. But I love the entire catalog. The only two that don't get a bunch of spins from me are The Gathering and Demonic. I like them, but a little TOO far into the death vocals. I remember when I first saw Testament in 2005. I had known of them, but after seeing them (it was Alex Skolnick's first tour back, I believe), I was floored, and went out at lunch the next day and bought their entire discography.
-

Demonic I can understand - I only like a few songs from the record (Demonic Refusal and The Burning Times, mainly), but The Gathering is amazing! I can remember that record blowing me away during the summer of 1999 and almost every single song still kicks my ass.
My top 2 are The New Order and The Gathering. I'm not a fan of the thin production on the old records though, which is why I rarely listen to Practice.
-
I have listened to The Gathering way more than Demonic.

I do NOT know Vexovoid, and it sounds like they are right up my alley. Will have to check them out.

re: Testament - love them. The Ritual is a great record. Like many bands, tried slowing it down a bit. It was good, even if it didn't catch on like some others.
The Ritual might not be among my very favorite Testament records, but I have very fond memories of when it came out. Yes, it was around the time when most thrash bands were streamlining things. Skolnick is so good on that one. I remember the video for Electric Crown - that was a GREAT single. I agree it could’ve (should’ve) been bigger…
-
Count me as one who loves The Gathering (potentially favourite album). I can remember my Testament journey pretty accurately. After getting into thrash via Metallica, then Megadeth and Slayer, I started to branch out and try all this classic thrash albums. Very few of these really hit a chord with me. The Legacy was one of those albums. I can appreciate for what it is but it’s not in the same league as Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer (at least for me).
This was probably around ‘05, and I don’t think I got around to checking out anything else by the band until I picked up the compilation Days of Darkness in ‘08. I got it cheap from my local record store and didn’t look back. For those of you who aren’t aware, Days of Darkness is a compilation album of sorts. Disc 1 is made up solely of songs from Demonic and The Gathering, whilst Disc 2 was re-recorded songs (in their current heavy sound) from The Legacy and The New Order. Man, this is probably actually my favourite album because it hand picks the best songs and re-records some of their best songs in a style I prefer. I listened to this and thought (as a big Lamb of God fan at this time), “Man, LoG really ripped these guys off”. I’m not sure they did, but there are some pretty noticeable similarities on this record.
From there I was a converted fan, to a degree. I bought The Formation of Damnation that year and really dug that one. I picked up Dark Roots of Earth in ‘13 and that was the point I went back and downloaded all their older albums. I fell off around ‘14 as that was when I went all in with the prog metal, so missed Brotherhood of the Snake when it came out.
I’ll chuck out an album ranking, and also my favourite songs off the Days of Darkness comp.
1. First Strike is Deadly
2. The Gathering
3. Demonic
4. The Formation of Damnation
5. Practice What You Preach
6. The New Order
7. The Ritual
8. Dark Roots of Earth
9. Low
10. Souls of Black
11. The Legacy
12. Titans of Creation
13. Brotherhood of the Snake
Top songs from Days of Darkness while we’re at it…
Hatred’s Rise
Down For Life
D.N.R.
Fall of Sipledome
Into the Pit
Trial by Fire
Disciples of the Watch
Over the Wall
The New Order

This actually came out earlier as First Strike Still Deadly. Testament wanted to remaster/re-issue their old records, but they couldn't get the rights or masters from the prior label. So they realized that they could re-record the music and get around the rights issue. I remember it coming out and LOVING it because it put a current production on those songs, though they did slow down the tempos a bit. Lately, I prefer the originals or live versions because of that tempo change. But it's cool as hell that they did it.

New Kerry King:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOwFC56MQgA
Joining the 59-year-old guitarist on the LP are DEATH ANGEL singer Mark Osegueda, longtime SLAYER drummer Paul Bostaph, former HELLYEAH bassist Kyle Sanders, and ex-MACHINE HEAD and VIO-LENCE guitarist Phil Demmel.
-
Sounds like Slayer! :lol
I dig it.
-
It certainly sounds like a band that has the guitarist from Slayer and the singer from Death Angel. I'll totally check out the album when it comes out but I'm expecting exactly 0 surprises lol

I don't think Kerry is looking to surprise anyone - he's been adamant that his songs will sound like Slayer because he was 1/2 of the writers in Slayer.
With Slayer not active, I'll take this in a heartbeat. Mark's an awesome singer and I'm sure he can sing the shit out of the Slayer songs once this band goes on tour.

I dig it.
Kerry said the song was recorded for Repentless but he wasn't quite happy with it so he cut it. So, yeah, it's Slayer.
Most of this is probably his next Slayer record that he said he pretty much had written after Repentless.
I'm down for this.
-
Repentless was really good.
This song certainly follows on from that sound and definitely nothing new, but enjoyable none the less.

Sounded like late Slayer without Tom. Pass.

As much as I hate to say it, it was. I was so pissed at King booting Lombardo that I wanted to hate the album. Sadly, I think it is really great.

I hadn't really liked much from the band after GHUA so went in with no expectations, was pleasantly surprised. Great album.

where is Overkill? Most consistent thrash band over the last 25 years

Overkill are OK, but honestly I'm not super familiar with them. I've listened to their biggest albums but nothing ever really stuck out as being something I'd revisit.
-
As we've been talking Slayer, has anyone heard of the band Slower? They are a Slayer cover band and they've just released their debut album. They play doomy (hence the name), female fronted covers...

I've only heard War Ensemble, but it's enough for me to want to check them out. It's like Messa covering Slayer or something. Good shit :metal

For those missing the classic teutonic thrash sound, check out new release by Terravore - Spiral of Downfall.

It's an old school sound and definitely worth a spin.

Anyone a fan of Forbidden? They have gotten back together with a new singer, Norm Skinner, and are incredible. My wife and I have seen them twice now since they reformed. Craig Locicero is a friend. Great guy, killer songwriter and player. New record coming for them in 2025. :metal
-
I'm not as familiar with their work as I'd like to be, but I've heard most of it and quite enjoy it. I've been binging on Imagika a lot due to sending them recently in a roulette, so my level of appreciation for Skinner has been rising. He and Smyth will be a fantastic pairing.

I have recently revisited Forbidden Evil, and I have Twisted Into Form lined up! Good stuff.
Is their most recent (almost 15 years old, now!) album worthy? For some reason, I've never gotten around to checking it out...
-
I don't have much to add - Forbidden is awesome.
THRASH THRASH THRASH :metal
-
Omega Wave is awesome.
I’m going to miss Russ, but I don’t believe he kept his voice in shape. Which is a shame, because he’s probably (for just pure singing talent) the #1 thrash vocalist of all time in my eyes.

I’m going to miss Russ, but I don’t believe he kept his voice in shape. Which is a shame, because he’s probably (for just pure singing talent) the #1 thrash vocalist of all time in my eyes.
It's not his voice. Russ retired. The band said when they did the announcement that Russ has gotten completely clean and sober, and wanted to leave it behind him. He gave his full blessing to Craig to move forward with Norm on vocals. I really respect Russ. Sounds like he just doesn't want to put himself around things that may tempt him.

Posted this a couple of times in the ...Listening thread recently. Highly recommended thrash from Sweden, came out in 2022:

Defiatory - Apokalyps
As we were just discussing it, I hear some Forbidden influence in the riffing. Some cool, melodic leads too.

I'll give it a blast mate :metal

New Kerry King track.

Cool solo from Phil. Never knew Mark had this in him. This album is shaping up to be pretty darn good.

Been binging on some "B-tier" thrash bands (who I often like more than the A-tier ones more recently) lately. Seems like this album hasn't gotten a ton of attention. A bunch of rerecordings of their earlier material, I'm sure purists find it sacrilege, but I like the punchier production style here.
-
I only really know the classic Annihilator albums. Jeff Waters is incredible though, so should probably give it a go.

I have this one as a bonus disc of my copy of Feast. I agree it's a pretty good revisit of a bunch of good songs. By the way, Feast is probably my favorite of their records with David Padden. It's not saying a lot, frankly, but there are some decent tunes in there.

I haven't heard all that much of their mid and later-era material, and am not really up on the vocalist changes, but from what I've heard I think they're more of a "specific tracks" band in those periods. For example, All For You generally seems considered one of their worst albums, even with Mangini on it, but the bonus track "Weapon X" is easily one of their best songs.

Loved the first few Annihilator albums. I got my Alice In Hell vinyl signed by the band before their first UK gig. Jeff is an absolutely extraordinary lead player. Really one of the best ever. Annihilator are definitely not one of the best thrash bands ever, though. His talents have been buried under decades of sub-par vocals and songs. He should have taken the Megadeth gig when offered, imo.
I hold a soft spot for him, though. I'll check out some of those re-recordings. Nice one.

Speaking of the irony though...
And it's interesting that almost every single major thrash band has at least one fatal flaw. I guess The Gathering and beyond Testament comes closest to getting it all right, though the songwriting is often good but not spectacular.

Yes to the bolded, for sure.
What's your favorite album of theirs, Litho? For me, Never, Neverland is the top for me, an absolute classic. Incredible riffing and leads, and great songs all around. The debut is great too, of course. But, as much as it almost sounds like a different band, Set the World on Fire might be the runner-up for me.
-
It might be cheating, but right now it might actually be Re-Kill, or even Double Live Annihilation that I posted a few days ago. The Re-Kill version of "Stonewall" has been stuck in my head all day long, and what an incredible solo. But for a more conventional answer, I'm really not sure. Probably one of the first two, but I haven't spent quite enough time with either for one to pop yet. They're one of those bands that I've always liked but didn't get into my rotation to familiarize myself with, so this current binge is helping with that.

In case it wasn’t clear, all of the above is, um, for me

Definitely revisit Never, Neverland…

Oh, so All For You it is. I love a contrarian. ;)

Well played

Oh, yeah. :lol You're so right. I'd genuinely not realised that... ;D I'm barely a Megadeth fan, bar a bunch of love for Peace Sells, even given Mustaine's massive guitar talents. For exactly the sub-par songs and vocals reasons.
And it's interesting that almost every single major thrash band has at least one fatal flaw. I guess The Gathering and beyond Testament comes closest to getting it all right, though the songwriting is often good but not spectacular.
Yeah, it's odd. Exodus have always been inconsistent. Slayer's quality gently dropped off a cliff. Testament have become consistent but doesn't excite me at all, somehow.

I'd put Death Angel's last handful of records up there too (Relentless Retribution, Dream Calls for Blood, The Moth, Humanicide).
The only Testament record that bored me lately was Brotherhood of the Snake. Titans of Creation re-solidified them for me, but they'll never top The Gathering in my eyes...of wrath. :metal
I think the last two Exodus albums have been awesome and hope that keep that going.

If you really want to flex your classic thrash knowledge, how many albums you heard from this list... (this is a ridiculously large list, FYI)

Mentioned over in the Anthrax thread that I finally looked into Nuclear Assault to see what Lilker did after Turbin canned him.
Started with Handle With Care. Gave it several listens and loved it.
Recently got a listen in to Game Over. Didn't like it as much. It's clear they stepped it up after that album, although, Brain Death is a fantastic and unexpected song.
My version of Game Over also included The Plague as a bonus. I thought the songs on that were better than Game Over, sans Brain Death.
I still have Survive to listen to. That has been out of print since 2012 and is available nowhere. A dude uploaded a CD rip to archive.org so I was able to get it there. Probably not legal, but it's nowhere to be found except the resale market.
Oh yeah, I bought Third World Genocide and Pounder digitally. Need to get to those as well.

In other thrash news, I went for a walk this evening as the sun was setting. I had a variety of tunes playing, but an absolute highlight was blasting 1,320' by Megadeth. What an absolute belter of a song :metal
