Title: Worst gig you've ever been to?
Post by: sneakyblueberry on July 31, 2010, 01:20:34 AM
Pretty keen on hearing some stories about some really average gigs.  I don't have any myself though so, POST AWAY!

Not counting random local bands, cause they're usually BAD. I'll go with Nightwish at Pops in Sauget Illinois.

The band had very little, almost no energy. They looked like they just wanted to leave from the moment they got on stage. Anette was just horrible, boring as hell. One cool thing is that they brought out that indian guy, but he sounded like crap. It was just a bad gig, I wanted to leave early.

Motley Crue opening for Aerosmith in 2006 (zzzz... Vince Neil was horrible)
Aerosmith and Dropkick Murphys in 2009 (I don't like DM, and Aerosmith was so bad that I am just starting to get over it)
Bob Dylan in 2006 (just his recent performing style altogether... I can't do it. He sounds like a bad Bob Dylan impersonator.)

Ah freakin yeah, I saw him in '07 and he's sort of lost it a bit eh.  But I still enjoyed it.

Dragonforce in 2006. Terrible sound, awful support bands, and Dragonforce were horribly sloppy live.

The Mars Volta at the Bren Center at UC Irvine. They put on a decent show as far as I could tell, but the sound was so atrocious I could barely identify the song a lot of the time.

Probably Whitesnake about 2 years ago.  Sound was crap, David was average, hardly sang and when he did it was all backing anyway, I got sick of his constant sleazly pickup lines on the 5 women in the audience.

Doug was very sloppy, missed notes left right and center, and Uriah was the most boring bastard.  Reb was the only saving grace.  His very few leads were perfect and very original and inspired and his backups carried David the whole show.  Drummer wasn't bad but nothing flash.  Coverdale really just made me sick, and Reb playing second fiddle to a sloppy ass Sykes wannabe was enough for me.

Well to answer the thread title question the "worst" (not to say it wasn't good, as I've enjoyed every major gig I've attended) gig was probably seeing Sacred Oath at the FYE parking lot in Danbury, CT on Halloween 2009. It was cool because they had a tank from a local museum drove down and pt behind them for the show, and the 'stage' (more like little area they were standing in on the same level as the audience. It started raining about twenty minutes into the set and the power went out, although it was soon restored. No mosh pits broke out, because we were in a parking lot, and everything was soaked. The meet and greet afterwards was cool though, and it was storming throughout their set, and that made for some pretty epic moments. Not bad, just not the best gig.

The Mars Volta.  The sound was absolutely horrible, and they only played for an hour and a half with no opening acts.  The singer had a hissy fit and closed with "The Widow" with no encore.  The BiG songs were pretty good live, but the other songs except for "Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus" didn't work.

Surprisingly enough it was Rush on the Hold Your Fire tour.  I've seen them countless times and the sound has always been amazing, except for this one time.  It wasn't where they were playing either because I'd seen them in said arena many times before and since and it has been great.  It was all high-range and somewhat muffled.  Sounded horrible.

Off the top of my head, probably Cynic. God they were so bad live. Killed the mood between Devin Townsend and BTBAM.

At one point the fucking lead singer tried to get the audience to do yoga with him, and all he got was a room full of people going "wtf?"

Chris Cornell when he toured for his album Euphoria Morning. He's awesome in the studio but everything I've ever heard of him live has been terrible - really off key and just plain bad. The night we saw him, my sister and I were cringing at all the bad notes. Very disappointing.

That may not have been the worst but it was the first show that came to mind.

Actually, Dragonforce were pretty good when I saw them.  Of course, nearly every song sounded the same (save "Strike of the Ninja," "Valley of the Damned," and "Through the Fire and Flames," actually, that was the whole encore), but the only parts where they really messed up were in TTFAF.

I'll go with A Perfect Circle in Philly on the 13th Step tour. The band and sound were great, but Maynard was being such a Tool (pun intended) with his between-song speeches and was constantly flat. That, and the band didn't even bother with an encore.

Not counting opening acts, I can't say I have ever been to a concert where the main act was bad enough to warrant calling it the "worst gig" I have ever been to, but I will say that Dream Theater in Chicago in 2002 is easily the most disappointing.  It was a good overall first set and encore, but the MoP cover in the second set was very disappointing. /opens up a can of worms :p

I saw Mountain open for Triumph in the 80's and I wanted to cut Leslie West's vocal chords so my ears could heal.

And this may be a shock for a few but Joe Satriani bored the hell out of me backing DT.  Everything sounded samey to me.

I can't believe I'm even writing this, but I got to see Frank Zappa in 1981, and it was the worst gig I've ever been to.

TOO LONG; DON'T READ

----------

This was during the "Crush all Boxes" tour, which led to the "Tinseltown Rebellion" live album. He was asking people (well, girls) to "donate" their panties by tossing them onstage. Some asshole threw a whiskey bottle on stage.

With a wave of his hand, Frank stopped the band cold, in the middle of a jam. He called for the house lights, which revealed confusion on the main floor, somebody get the crap beaten out of him. He was taken away, and Frank proceeded to lecture us on proper concert etiquette. I'm being polite - he was pissed, and rightfully so, and his restraint was admirable. The Masonic Theater in Royal Oak is a beautiful, amazing venue, and Frank commented on that, and how even in such a place, people will act like idiots. Eventually, he calmed down some, turned and yelled "THREE, FOUR!" and the band picked up right where they'd left off. It was like he'd released the Pause button that he'd pressed earlier.

At the end of the show, as the final chord of the last song was still echoing, the house lights came up, and the message was clear: No encores for you!

Even as I was disappointed, I admired the integrity (?) which led him to conclude that this audience did not get an encore. No amount of applause, cheering, screaming or yelling was going to "earn" us one. But somehow I didn't blame Frank. I was pissed at the moron who threw the bottle.

----------

Other impressions: The way the band stopped on a dime was awesome, only surpassed by how they resumed at, as far as I could tell, the exact point where they'd stopped. Stories about Frank's total command of his ensemble abound, but I got to witness it first-hand. I only wish the circumstances leading to it were more positive.

I'm not sure what I expected, but I remember being surprised by how his guitar solos came up. There were (I believe) five times during the show when Frank took a "spotlight solo". Crazy song or jam is proceeding on stage, then the tempo and mood suddenly change, stage lighting switches to blues and reds, and a spotlight comes on. Frank strolls forward into the spotlight and takes his solo. It is amazing, of course. Then the lights, music, and mood return to what was going on before, or maybe move on to something else.

Obviously it was Frank's show and his band, but I generally expect a guitar solo to "grow out of" the song. You know, it's normally played over the same progression as a verse or chorus. For each of these events, however, it was very clear what was happening: The Maestro will now take a solo! It was quite unlike anything I'd ever seen/heard before, and I honestly didn't think much of it. For me, it's not just the solo, it's how it compliments everything else going on in the song. Switching to a different key, time, or tempo specifically for the duration of the solo seemed artificial, and seemed like a massive indulgence of ego (which I guess was the unexpected part). If the band is jamming in 11/8, I want to hear the solo played over the same pattern. What can he come up with? Don't throw in a 4/4 blues solo, then return to the 11/8 riff to finish the song; solo in 11/8!

Another impression: At the time, I only had maybe half a dozen Zappa/Mothers albums. Since Frank's shows tended to draw from all periods, I didn't know a lot of the songs they played. Again, with most bands, that's not a big deal. If you don't know the song, but it's got a good beat and catchy harmonies, no problem. But a lot of Frank's music takes a few listens to really "click" with me, so there was a lot of unfamiliar stuff and no opportunity for it to sink in, when I guess I was thinking I'd get to hear more of my favorites and maybe even sing along. My buddy and I were most familiar with the Flo & Eddie period and the Roxy & Elsewhere album. The shows we "knew" had a theme, an ongoing patter between tunes, or something. Collecting panties is cool, but reminding us to donate them every couple of songs isn't quite the same as a permeating theme to the show, which was otherwise just a collection of songs.

Don't get me wrong. The show was still great. It's not possible for me to come away from a great performance by talented musicians and not be impressed. But Frank did things his way, regardless of the "norm" for any given situation, and his live performances were clearly no different. I'm glad I got to see him, and I would probably be in a better position to appreciate it now. But that's not going to happen now, so what I'm left with is memories of seeing one of my all-time favorite musicians, and having to rate it an honest 6 or 7, tops, on a scale of 10.

seconded. saw them in 2009 with lead singer, deuce. He was lip-syncing, and every so often, you could hear his broken voice coming through. Especially on No.5, when he was fucking screaming it. They're ok, now that he's fucked off though...

I'll ad Trivium opening for DT in 2011 in LA. I was already going in with no interest in the band... but they had horrible sound issues that made already shitty music sound even shittier.

The concert overall was fantastic, but one of the worst sets I've ever seen had to be Inquisition on the Metal Alliance Tour. Rad as fuck musicianship, but the vocalist's frog croaks took me out of it completely and I could not stop laughing.

Worst live band I ever saw was O Brother.  They chugged with tons of feedback with their backs to the crowd for several minutes.  Thankfully they were just an opening act.

If you wanna get in to not so huge bands... the absolute worst I've seen has been The Feisty Piranhas. I saw them open for The Misfits in 07 and 09. They fucking suck hard hairy donkey dick. The entire pit sat down during their sets bother times. They were the band on right before the headliner too so that sucked all the energy out of it. Both times they had a bunch of awesome local punk and thrash bands open for them... and then TFP. I mean.. They would fit opening for like Blink 182 or something... but not The Misfits.

The lead singer died last year. Brain aneurysm. So sad.

The worst set I've ever seen was the local act that opened for Joe Satriani when I saw him on the Surfing With The Alien tour.

They were a glam band that had a gimmick of having a saxophone player and they were just dreadful. It was bad enough that they really weren't a fit for Joe Satriani-and you can't really blame the promoter there, in 1988 where the hell were you going to find a local instrumental act?-but they were just derivative and awful and the crowd turned on them pretty fast. The only highlight was the singer, after about thirty minutes, yelling "YOU GUYS THINK WE SUCK?" *about 800 people roar* "HERE'S ANOTHER SONG!" Had to admire the bastard, even if his band was awful.

One new years back in the late 80s. I saw Night Ranger with the Eric Martin Band and Eddie Money opening. Eric Martin got us started off just right, Eddie Money fucking killed it, one of the best stage performances I've ever seen. The audience had nothing left for Night Ranger, and they had nothing to give. The band was deader than a cheep hooker going through the motions, and the audience was obnoxious at the best moments, we left early.

Holy sheeeit son I don't even remember making this thread.

Worst gigs, hmmmm.

I saw a DRONE band called Black Boned Angel or something one time.  They were two guys, playing ONE CHORD on their baritone (or detuned) guitars through huge bass amps.  Then one of the guys starts crudely playing a little drum set at the same time, hitting the snare and cymbal with one stick, to coincide with their crashing chord...

Needless to say I had to leave.  I returned about 30min later...

Guys are still playing the same chord, with the drum hit, and A GODDAMN SAXOPHONIST BEHIND THEM.  It was the stupidest shit I've ever seen.

Either Tool in 2007 or Katatonia opening for Opeth in 2013. Maynard did the majority of the show with his back to te crowd, they spent probably 15-20 minutes on bullshit ambient lighting set to smoke machines and boring synth interludes which had nothing to do with their actual music, didn't play a note of Undertow, and the sound was shit. Katatonia's music was very boring, they had little stage presence, the singer was the worst showman I've ever seen even including all the random youtube viewing I've done in my life, and he performed with his hair covering almost all of his face and wearing sunglasses and a long-sleeved shirt he'd grossly sweated through in the late spring south heat. What fat person wears long sleeves in North Carolina in May?

Oh shit, they're the ones, Katatonia. On their co-headline tour with Devin Townsend on the Epicloud run, I was on the verge of tears because I was sure Devin Townsend's set was going to get cut short due to Katatonia going over their time by some stretch. Luckily it wasn't the case, but my friend and I walked around Downtown St.Paul for 3/4 of their set after thinking "This is the most boring shit ever". Like you said Bloyd, the band had like zero stage presence, and their singer had his face covered and stood still the entire fucking time I saw them at least.

The vibe I got from him when I saw them open for Opeth in 2011 was that he doesn't seem notice he's performing in front of an audience, he probably doesn't even notice he's dying in his long sleeves.

Worst gig I ever saw was not the band's fault.

Motorhead

Ever listen to a band playing through a soundboard that has fried itself?   Yep...that's what happened.   But, being the professional he is, Lemmy did the show anyway.  No one knew what to do except keep going.   Sounded like they were playing in the bottom of a cesspool.  Big disappointment.   I left 6 songs into the set.  It was just unlistenable.   But I applaud Motorhead for proving the old saying "the show must go on"...even under the most frustrating of circumstances.

Tool, actually.  :|
Maybe it was just a shit seat.

Yeah, seeing them on the 10,000 Days tour was like watching a film set to the studio tracks.  It seems they've been content to phone it in with lame greatest-hits set lists ever since 2006.  A Perfect Circle in 2011 were also disappointing since they decided to dedicate the majority of the set to covers.

Dream Theater's first New York show in 2008 was very disappointing.  Terrible setlist, wayyy too much wanking, and a lame drum solo.  The second night was good, but the first night was the reason why I didn't see them again until the current tour.

The opening acts for The Gathering in NY in 2007 were putrid, and TG's sound was horrible with the vocals almost inaudible.  At the time nobody knew it would be Anneke's last headline set with them which made it all the more frustrating.  Some people flew across the country to see that.

I've got another one. It wasn't a -bad- show. It was actually fan fucking tasitic... but...

Black Label Society's "UnBlackened" show in Los Angeles last year. The show they filmed for the DVD. (For those who don't know it featured Black Label's less heavy / acoustic numbers, plus a bunch of Zakk Wylde's solo material and what not. There was also rumors of covers?)

It was epic but some aspects were a complete letdown. It was originally supposed to be at the historic Mayan Theater. It was moved to the Club Nokia (still a nice venue.) It was billed as having a string quartet and special guests (Ozzy? It was very possible.) Nope. The "special guests" were the singer from Cycle of Pain (BLS's bassist's side band), and Derek Sherinian on keys (who I met... randomly came up to my buddy and I and poked fun at us wearing DT shirts.)

Also... Zakk was slurring like a motherfucker. He has become less... epic since he stopped drinking. Or he spent way too much time around Ozzy.

Still had a blast.

Y'all are nuts. Katatonia was great before Devy and were the biggest surprise of the night for me. I dug the music on record and live, I'd worried it would plod and be boring but it never was. It was a weird energy but awesome and the crowd was into it and I was surrounded by Katatonia fans and it was awesome.

As for Katatonia before Opeth, that gig was much less awesome. I blame it on the Opeth fans who didn't give a shit and thus didn't get into and stood there like statues. Funnily enough, they did that for Opeth too. Sub par gig.
Title: Re: Worst gig you've ever been to?

I will barely ever get up in arms about a band but I'm about to.

Katatonia came on, and they all just stood still for a fucking hour. Their vocalist did little to no crowd banter, and hid behind his shitty spit end, sweaty, nasty hair, and poured a puddle of sweat into a what looked like either a long shirt or a sweatshirt, from standing still and barely singing. Every single fucking song would start off like they were going down this almost cool melodic death metal route before those shitastic, most monotone, most lifeless vocals came in and made it seem like what I could only assume is grandfather alt rock. None of them had any stage presence and many people were chanting for them to get off the stage for Devin Townsend. We left for part of their set, and dedicated the time to walking through a lovely downtown park in St. paul, and when we'd gotten back the atmosphere had never changed, people just didn't give a fuck about this boring band that looked like a limp, viagra-less, 65 year old dick up on stage. And before you say maybe I just didn't give the music a chance, my friend and I listened to them on the way up, and we had to turn it off, it was so dreadfully boring, we opted to just put on all of the Project albums at the time on instead. They also went over their allotted time and I was freaking out that it would cut into Devy's time, which it luckily didn't, but fuck them, nobody cared for them and they just wouldn't stop playing.

30 minutes later and the entire crowd was hugging each other head banging to Grace and it was magical.

Title: Re: Worst gig you've ever been to?
Post by: 73109 on September 21, 2014, 10:36:56 PM
My experience was, as I said, incredibly different. I was around 3 other people who dug the music and it was awesome. The set was fantastic and I was never bored. It really made the show for me. Devy is Devy and I liked Paradise Lost's set, so I knew that would be good. I was a bit skeptical about how Katatonia would translate into a live show and I thought they killed.

For me, a large problem with my going to shows is that a lot of my enjoyment comes about because of other people. If other people aren't into it, the show dies and I'm not into it. I've talked to some people who get just focus on the band like it is a concert specifically for them, but I can't do that. I think digging the music and being around other people who did made a huge difference. As I said, when they opened for Opeth, it was much worse--almost certainly because people didn't give a shit about their music.

I saw Queens of the Stone Age last year, and I enjoyed the show, BUT it was WAY too loud. During Better Living Through Chemistry, they did this really cool jam thing, but you could barely differentiate the parts because it was too much for the PA to handle. Folks need to turn down their amps a bit.

Oh, and they didn't play I Appear Missing, so that was a let down. Other than that, though, pretty good show. Jon Theodore KILLED.

Yeah, that wasn't too good. I was there too, but definitely not the worst gig I've seen. That honour goes to both Fear Factory and Katatonia. Fear Factory was just terrible with the singer out of tune all the time. Luckily, I only had to see them, because Meshuggah in the other room of the festival was too boring to sit through and to wait for Opeth. You're right, far from it but I count it as one of my biggest disappointments since I only tend to visit shows from bands that I like. Also, my girlfriend came along and I wanted to convince her that they're a good band.. but even I had to admit that the show just wasn't good.

Also, Oceansize opening up for Porcupine Tree in Germany on their last tour wasn't good at all. Partly due to bad sound. Porcupine Tree had excellent sound though, as usual.

Tim Hecker. From my friend's review of it:

"Later on, Bear In Heaven seem pleasant enough on the main stage, but for some reason we decide it would be a better idea to go check out ambient noise artist Tim Hecker. The set is one, long flowing piece that transforms itself at a frankly glacial pace – it’s basically like listening to one of those ‘slowed down 800%’ videos on Youtube. Occasionally, something resembling a melody might drift into view, only to be quickly be obscured by a swell of bass. Oh God, the bass – it’s quite literally the most visceral thing we’ll hear (and feel) all weekend, with the low end frequencies reaching ribcage-shaking levels. It’s so visceral, in fact, that to leave would almost seem like pussying out, and so we stay until the end to claim our unwanted badge of honour – if it were a physical thing, it would probably read something like “I survived the Heckerpocalypse.” After about 40 minutes of bewildering noise, I’m not sure if I’ve had some sort of transcendental experience, or if I’ve simply been wasting my time – though I have a sneaking suspicion it’s probably the latter."

Birmingham NEC on the Angel Dust tour. The arena was just too large for the small stage/sound set up the band had, openers L7 had rocked the house down, and FNM were just lost in this huge aircraft hanger of an arena. The crowd started to rip the covers off the seats and throw them around, the security tried to stop them, and it all got a bit mental.

It wasn't that the show was bad; as I said, it's just not possible for musicians of that calibre to put on a bad show.  But it was disappointing overall for a number of reasons, and since most shows I've been to have been really good, Frank's show qualifies as the "worst" for me.

Worst gig? I can't really think of any gig worth mentioning although in 2003 or 04 I went and saw Symphony X at a pretty small venue and the sound was insanely bad and for some reason Jason Rullo couldn't keep the tempo at all. He started in one tempo and ended in a diffrent. My first timing seeing SX so I was fairly dissapointed to say the least. A couple of years later I saw them when they opened for DT and it was like seeing and hearing a diffrent band. Man they floored me that night, both the lightning rig and the sound was top notch and every one in the band was on fire. They gave DT a run for their money, atleast that night.

I've been pretty lucky over the years and haven't seen too many shitty concerts.  Of course, I don't go to a lot of shows (maybe 2 or 3 a year, max) so it's hard to pick out the worst gig ever, but some of the ones I remember as sucking pretty bad:

1978 - Boston Garden - Jethro Tull with Whitesnake (yes, that Whitesnake) opening.  David Coverdale had just quit Deep Purple and was ready to rock with his new outfit, but I'm not sure if he hit a single note that night.  It was the first live concert I had ever been to (I was 14 at the time) and I was really disappointed in how terrible Whitesnake sounded.  But Jethro Tull was amazing.

1992 - Some Shithole in Modesto, CA - Robin Trower Band - Just....awful.  Left in the middle of the third song.  One of the only times I've ever left a show in progress.

2003 - The Tweeter Center, Mansfield MA - Rush - I can't even compare this show to the Rush concerts I went to in the early 80's.  At this show Geddy Lee's vocals were horrible and they had some triggered sound effects and keyboard parts that came in at the wrong times.

Those are the ones that come immediately to mind

Katatonia opening for Porcupine Tree. That was painful to endure, but luckily Porcupine Tree blew it away. But in Katatonia's defense, it was a combination of their setup and them as openers not having that clear sound you want, as well as giving one of their worse gigs. Because I saw Katatonia as the headliner two years later (with Alcest opening!) and they were really good then. So I don't know what happened when they opened for PT, but it was like as if everything that could go wrong went wrong.

I've never seen a downright bad show by anyone, probably because I never go to festivals, and I rarely watch the support bands when I go to an indoors show.

Speaking of Katatonia, I saw them headining a festival two nights ago - I thought they were great and the crowd loved them too. Jonas may not be the most engaging frontman of all time, but he acknowledged the audience several times, even thanking us in Finnish and throwing in a "c'mon Helsinki!" shout during some songs. But of course the main focus of Katatonia's gigs is the music, and you're probably not going to enjoy the show if the songs bore you, which is fair enough.

Oh god, yes. That was awful. I thought I was gonna pass out.

My wife almost did.  I had to take her to the refreshment and get a bottle of water.  That place was hotter than 100 degrees.  Brutal.

Ew. I hate heat.

I've never seen this thread! Interesting Zappa tale, Orbert.

It wasn't that the show was bad; as I said, it's just not possible for musicians of that calibre to put on a bad show.  But it was disappointing overall for a number of reasons, and since most shows I've been to have been really good, Frank's show qualifies as the "worst" for me.

It was also a good excuse to share what I think is a reasonably interesting story.

Definitely. So that was the only time you got to see him?

As for my own answers, I would probably say Opeth at the Birch Hill Nightclub back in like 2002 or 3, but that's because I was sick and had promised my carless friend I'd take him, so I was smushed into this little place with a fever. Bad idea.

Oh shit, I almost forgot! I have a new answer for this. A few weeks ago, when Phish was in town for their Labor Day weekend series of shows, a few of us went to a sort of "after-party" starring Touchpants, the "comedy" band of Phish's drummer. What an absolute shite experience. First of all, we got there maybe around 12:30 AM and the band didn't go on until almost 2, so we were already fucking exhausted. And then, the music! Jesus... so, this band consists of three obviously talented musicians who are just playing shite, and a singer who is a complete douchebag. I'm not easily offended and I enjoy a little filth (I think bands like Tenacious D can be a lot of fun), but this was just ridiculous. They were trying wayyy too hard to be dirty and offensive and it really just wasn't funny. Two of them sat on toilets while they performed, and the most entertaining part of the show was fantasizing about smashing the singer's face into the porcelain until it became a bloody pulp. The first song was called "Mushroom Tattoo" and it was over twenty minutes of complete idiocy about hitting a woman in the face with your cock. The lyrics ranged from dumb to downright misogynist and the shit just went on forever. Also, the singer was pretending that his microphone was a penis at one point and hit Tony in the face with it. Tony was not happy about this. If you're feeling brave/masochistic, I found a video of this song being performed (but I stopped it less than a minute in so I'm not sure how it compares to our experience)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvdPux_9oWg
We gave them a second chance and sat through another song or two, but there was no fucking way. We went home to bed and wondered why all of the rest of the people in the club were actually still there. Drugs, I presume.

Worst gig in recent memory:

TesseracT with CloudKicker and some other bands I don't remember. It was a snooze fest.

 :eek

Can't say anything about TesseracT live, but Intronaut, and Cloudkicker with Intronaut as the backing band a snoozefest? hoofta I'm going to have to go sit down(I already am muahahahaha)

Yep. That was the other band. Cloud kicker felt like the same song over and over again and intronaut didnt help any.

I will fucking murder you to death
Can't believe I missed this. I will fuck your dead corpse after sonatafanica is done with you.

I don't hate them, I actually like Vampire Weekend but when I saw them close a festival here a few months back it was a snorefest. No energy, except for the bassist, who was awesome.

Carl Palmer's band a couple years ago. The guitar was waaaaaay too loud and my ears suffered for it. I also suffered at how much it sucked listening to ELP without Emerson and the fact that there were no keyboards.

I also want to mention a band none of you have heard of and you're very lucky. They are called "La carga", a local band from Argentina that seem to have really good connections and somehow manage to open for international prog bands. I have suffered their music 3 times when they opened for Deep Purple, Kansas and Yes. Some friends of mine also suffered with them in Jethro Tull and Alan's Parsons Project. I hate them so much.

DT 2010.
Horrible Sound. Prety lame setlist. Short as hell.

Are you talking about the ones in BA? I went to both shows and I don't remember it sounding bad. I do agree the setlists weren't great and the shows were too short.

Yngwie Malmsteen 1994 or 1995, my first and last concert with him. He had a whole band but played only a couple of songs and even then the spotlight was always on him. And ever so often in between songs he just shredded away to show how fast he was. Musical value: zero. Then he switched to acoustic and continued the mindless shredding but with an even worse sound. And every minute or so he paused, raised his arms in the air and was awaiting the applaus, which came less and less. Out of the roughly 90 minute set, it felt like 80 minutes were him noodling aimlessly on the guitar. I knew before that he had a big ego and probably was a dick, but this concert raised the standards for egomaniac to whole new levels.

Soundgarden 1996. The place was packed with way too many people, like putting 10 pounds of shit into a five pound bag. The place was hot and overcrowded and we waited for the concert to begin. You could see the drumset for soundgarden in the back and the one for the support act in front.
The support act started and was only mildly interesting (a band called Eleven). They finished and we were waiting for Soundgarden. The stagehands carried the drumset off stage only to bring another one. Turned out there was a second support act, hooray! The place was now even hotter and even more overcrowded. The second support act (Moby with a punk band) was boring but we endured it, waiting for the main act. Moby finished and the stagehands carried the drumset away, only to bring another one. Alright! Three support acts, double time hooray!!! A band called Sponge (sadly without a bob) then got on our nerves. They were just plain bad and what made it even worse was, that they tried to cover Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. But they murdered and slaughtered the tune, it was atrocious.
Then, after maybe two hours of terrible support acts, Soundgarden finally came on stage. The place was now hotter than a finnish sauna. There were more people collapsing in the front row than young girls on any boy group concert, because of the heat.
From the start it was obvious that Cornell had severe problems with his voice. He was more screeching and screaming than singing. He tried to get through, but on the last songs his voice gave away and you could barely hear him. The bass player stood there the whole time like he was bored out of his mind, and the guitar player seemed angry about everything. It was not fun to watch and less fun to listen too. If it wasn’t so crowded that we literally had no chance of getting to the exit, we would have left after the first couple of songs.

I had a mate over the other day who had been to a relatively recent guitar "clinic" with Malmsteen and he said something along the lines of " You may think Malmsteen is an arrogant prick but that really doesn't do him justice (I'm expecting to be surprised how nice he was) .....he's the biggest fucking ^%^%$*% I've ever laid eyes on"

Apparently he rocked up in full regalia (leather pants and probably some fucking admiral's jacket  ;D ) , noodled around , treated everyone with contempt and when the time came to finish he threw his hair back like some diva and said "Gotta plane to catch" and walked off  ;D

Regarding Malmsteen, a friend of mine saw him a couple of times in the early 90s and had nothing but praise. But he went to a "clinic" once and was very disappointed. Apparently Malmsteen played some licks and then said, that he is going to play them slower, so that every one can see what he's doing, only to play it at excat the same speed over and over again. Some serious trolling, if you ask me.  ;D

In Worcester, DT's opening act was some VH1 dude doing a stand-up routine and Charred Walls of the Damned (second Judas Priest singer). Sure left us wanting something epic, though, which DT delivered.

Oh Yngwie.

I saw him when I was in High School...2007. My cousin won tickets on the radio and couldn't make it so he gave them to me. My buddy and I went mainly to see Bjorn Englen on bass (my buddy's bass teacher at the time) and Tim The Ripper Owens on Vox. It was actually kinda cool because the girl I was kinda in to was there as well (another student of Bjorn), and I spent the entire show chilling with her. Her dad even slipped the security guards a couple twenties to get my bud and I down into the VIP section. Anyway... the opening act was this cool punkish? russian band. Forgot their name. Lot's of energy. Great opening band pick. Then Malmsteen came on.

It sounded horrible. First of all... this was at The Majestic Ventura Theater, which has the worst acoustics and house mix dude I've ever heard. Couple that with the fact that most of the show was him jerking off with his guitar and Ripper's awesome (but distorted and muddy because of the acoustics of the venue) vocals...

It was horrible.

And It wasn't just because of the acoustics. I had seen the Misfits a month earlier and even though everything was distorted and fuzzy and muddy, it was an amazing show. Malmsteen is just... he's just a fucked up bitch.

Neil Young couple months back, really boring setlist, boring "jams" where Mr. Young played the same 2 chords over and over again, terrible crowd and the storm which damaged the sound. The opening band Midlake was miles better. Still,I heard Heart Of Gold live. But that just proves Neil Young should never shred,he should stick to acoustic.

I'll go with A Perfect Circle in Philly on the 13th Step tour. The band and sound were great, but Maynard was being such a Tool (pun intended) with his between-song speeches and was constantly flat. That, and the band didn't even bother with an encore.

No encore?

I was just thinking recently...has any big name band ever finished a set without doing an encore?

This answers my question. None that I've personally seen.

The only time I saw Yes was the worst show out of several hundreds I have been to.
It was a couple of years ago and it was the last gig David Benoit did with them. They came out on stage and he was just ill. No pitch, no power and after a couple of songs you could just tell he wanted off the stage. It was just so dreadful to listen to yet I admired him for pushing through. He got fired less than a week after that show.

I caught Maiden/Dio at a shed on the hottest day in Dallas history. Still, damp air under the shed and they didn't even think to have firehoses to spray us down. Spent the entire show hanging onto the barricade and drinking Jack from a hip-flask. Good times. That was a Blayze show. Saw Maiden a couple of years later during the Ed Hunter tour at an indoor venue that didn't have the AC on. One of the best Maiden shows I've been to. If it's a good show I don't pay attention to the heat. Oddly, never been to a show that was cold enough for me.

Seen Yngwie six or seven times, including several of the tours y'all refer to. The only problem I ever really have is that stupid fucking screeching delay part every damn show. However, the last time I saw him about 8 years ago he'd clearly moved beyond being in a band and playing songs into just wanking all night. I didn't even bother last time he was in town (and playing 3 minutes from my place) as he didn't even bother bringing a singer with him. I guess at this point the people who will pay to see him don't care about anything but shredding, which is a shame. He's written some pretty cool music over the years.

See the thing about the heat in the Palladium is that it was GA, so you couldn't give up your spot for a drink very easily, and it was full of moshing, foul-smelling teenagers. In the July heat, it was packed to the brim, and it featured old-fashioned (non-LED) stage lights.

This show represents Carpe Diem for me. I loved that show and am incredibly nostalgic. However I do not remember it with great detail, partially because I didn't know most of the songs. Now MP's gone and there's very little video of this particular show, so I've developed an obsession over it.

Yeah, I should probably see a psychologist to figure out why I'm REALLY obsessing over a two-hour concert I attended when I was twelve.

Dark Tranquillity didn't play an encore when I saw them live last year - their vocalist said something to the effect of "encores are pointless, we'll just play these songs without walking out between them". I've also heard In Flames and Nightwish don't do encores.
Title: Re: Worst gig you've ever been to?
Post by: Orbert on September 26, 2014, 10:27:11 AM
I can kinda see that point.  If an encore is expected, which nowadays it basically is, then there's this thing you go through where they say Thanks and Goodnight and leave, the crowd screams for a while, then they come back out and play some more.  Sometimes they act all surprised, or say something about how this crowd is the best they've ever had (which they say every night anyway), but unless there are extenuating circumstances, this pretty much always happens.  It seems rather pointless.

The only reason I can think of to do it is to maybe give the band a little break so they can catch their breath, drink some water, and come back out and really nail the last song(s) and finish on a high note.  Actually, I just thought of that, and that's not a bad reason, I guess.

I saw him last year, and he had the keyboard player doing vocals. It was hilarious, though. He was on the far left of the stage along with the rest of the band. Yngwie and his gear took up 70% of the stage. I met him after the show, too. He was cool to me personally, but a dick to others. He refused to sign any guitar that wasn't a Fender.

Steve Vai at The Palace in Melbourne 2004.
The venue was packed, what seemed to be above capacity, the smoke machine on stage seemed to cover the whole audience in a fog.
I was up the front, so we may have suffered more, so apart from ringing ears, I had a headache and badly needed water....but as so many people would find at standing room only concerts is if you want the front, you can't move from your spot, unless you are prepared to lose it.
Steve Vai was great as usual, but I was so glad I was going to Sydney for the next concert.
