Title: Orcus' Song Roulette - A Music Contest
Post by: orcus116 on July 27, 2010, 02:06:19 PM
Hello and welcome to an MD exclusive guessing game where six contestants will help fill my free time with song suggestions they think I will like. There will be five rounds and a point system to determine the winner.

Rules:

I'll start the judging once I get the first six people to PM me their song. A list of the contestants will be made as soon as I get these PMs. Points for Round 1 will be given based on ranking so for example the song I like the best will earn 6 points, second best 5, etc.

Now when you suggest a song you're free to pick any song from any genre you want. You can check my last.fm in my sig to get suggestions though it's more of a loose guide than anything. You might be surprised what I might like.

Round 1 Results

Loved the variation of styles. Some clicked better than others but that's all part of the game.

Least Favorite

dreamtheatervt
Therion - "Son Of The Staves Of Time"
Symphonic metal really isn't my cup of tea but it wasn't bad. It'd be unfair to lump it in with the other similar bands I've heard my roommate play but it sounded like a song any of those bands could've made. Don't mean to sound overly negative but it's not a style of music that really excites me.

Honorable Mentions

Portrucci
Neu! - "E-Musik"
I have no idea what to make of this song. There's little to no variation but it was so entrancing. Definitely a genre I wouldn't pick up on my own but it was interesting to hear. I actually started laughing at the end with the semi-growl.

Sigz
Brand New - "Not The Sun"
The first thing that hit me was how much I didn't like the vocals but for some reason they got really interesting when the first chorus hit. Harmonies were awesome as well as the nuanced guitar parts in the background. Haven't listened to this type of music in awhile though so I dunno how much I could listen to but for 3 minutes that wasn't bad at all.

Marvellous G
Brian Eno - "Always Returning (For All Mankind)"
Been meaning to get into Eno for awhile. Very chill, very relaxing though it did get a little repetitive. What was there was nice, though.

Runner Up

Volk9
David Sylvian - "The Boy With The Gun"
Loved the instrumentation. Had an Opeth vibe to it and the bass reminded me of Lightbulb Sun era PT. Very nice atmosphere. Vocals kinda reminded me of Akerfeldt doing PoS style vocal melodies.

Winner

hefdaddy42
John Hiatt - "Lipstick Sunset"
I'll have to listen to this a few more times but I liked it on first listen. Reminded me a little of Desperado era Eagles though that probably has to do with the country rock style of the song. Loved the slide work on this song as well as the background guitar playing after the solo.

Current points:

hefdaddy42 - 6
Volk9 - 5
Marvellous G - 4
Sigz - 3
Portrucci -2
dreamtheatervt -1

Round 2: Themed Round - 1960s through 1980s

All contestants must submit a song from the 1960s through the 1980s, so January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1989. All genres are welcome.

Awesome!  Glad you liked it.  The slide work is by Ry Cooder, while the acoustic throughout is by Hiatt.  I love the lyrics, and while his vocal style is probably an acquired taste, he really brings the emotions of the lyrics through in the recording.  One of my all-time faves.

Waitin' on the hef.

Round 2 Results

Great variation once again. This round was tough, to be honest, since all the songs were, at the very least, good.. The rankings don't really show how close a battle it was.

Least Favorite

Volk9
Dead Can Dance - "Anywhere Out Of This World"
Took me by surprise. Didn't floor me, probably because the song kinda stayed in one place but there's something I liked about the brooding nature of the song. It's hard to tell whether or not a lead instrument would've added or subtracted from the song but it did feel like something was missing.

Honorable Mentions

Marvellous G
Tracy Chapman - "Fast Car"
I really liked the vocals of this song. The way its crafted reminds me of R.E.M. a little bit. A little repetitive but seeing as the progression of the lyrics was the main point of the song I don't mind as much.

hefdaddy42
Randy Newman - "Short People"
Definitely had a good laugh with this song. Very enjoyable and I have no idea why I figured Newman was a movie song only kinda guy.

Portrucci
Ton Steine Scherben - Die letzte Schlacht gewinnen wir
I couldn't understand a single word but man what a fun little song. I really dug the surfer/punk style a lot. I might actually check out more stuff by this band since after taking Rock History I've gained an interest in the early surf and proto-punk styles.

Runner Up

dreamtheatervt
Mission Of Burma - "That's When I Reached For My Revolver"
Great groove, great style. Really digging this a lot. Don't really know what else to add aside from what I said about the punk style above.

Winner

Sigz
Crack The Sky - "Nuclear Apathy"
Oh man where did this come from? It's like Zeppelin and Rush had a baby. Tons of interesting parts and very well arranged. Definitely makes me want to check out more of their stuff.

Current points:

hefdaddy42 - 9
Sigz - 9
Volk9 - 6
Marvellous G - 6
Portrucci -6
dreamtheatervt -6

Round 3: "Comedy" Challenge

Figured I'd throw a curveball this time around. All contestants must submit the worst possible song they can think of. You'll get a bonus point if it'll make me laugh, hence the comedy option. You can get as creative as you want but please no Brokencyde or Attack Attack. Oh and no modern Dream Theater to try and be a wise guy  ;)

Round 3 Results

I've never seen such, uh, interesting vocals as with some of these songs.

Least Favorite

dreamtheatervt
Reverend Horton Heat - "Eat Steak"
This song just made me hungry. Didn't really laugh even though it was ridiculous.

Honorable Mentions

Marvellous G
High School Reunion - "Bet On It"
Dear god what is this? Hip hop teen angst? That fact that he was just running around freely on a golf course made it kinda funny. I was waiting for him to cry for the longest time.

Volk9
Linkin Park - "The Catalyst"
Hahaha the processed vocals. The cheesy synths seal this song's death about a minute twenty in. Yeah I really can't deal with this, definitely up there in terms of bad.

Sigz
Kei Kunihiro - "Roadkill Red"
MIDIs? MIDIs?! The vocals are absolutely gold, especially when he tries to get gruff. I think one minute of this is about all anyone needs to hear of this guy, ever.

Runner Up

hefdaddy42
Leona Anderson - "Rats In My Room"
I'll admit it, I lost it when the vocals started. I have no idea why the song exists or let alone why it was even recorded. Truly putrid singing.

Winner

Portrucci
Einstürzende Neubauten - "Seele Brennt"
What. The. Hell. Definitely wins the bad category. I don't even know what to make of this.

Current points:

hefdaddy42 - 14
Sigz - 13
Portrucci -12
Volk9 - 9
Marvellous G - 8
dreamtheatervt -7

The point of the game is to introduce songs that the host might not know or is not that familiar with right? It would be a cheap shot to suggest for example Heartattack to Sigz IMO..

Of course. I wasn't planning on starting until this one's done.

Round 4 Results

Least Favorite

Sigz
Fanthomas - "The Godfather Theme" (Movie Theme)
Absolutely not what I was expecting. A very unusual cover to say the least. I liked half, didn't really like the heavy half. I'm sure its ambitions are lying in places I can't see.

Honorable Mentions

Portrucci
Ulver - "Solitude" (Black Sabbath)
Very gloomy. I dug the atmosphere, especially the trumpet wailing all over the place though the vocals are something I'd need to get warmed up to. Decent length for what it was worth but it lacked any real impact, even if that wasn't the point of the song. Kinda felt unsatisfied, to be honest.

Volk9
Kalisia - "A Fortune In Lies" (Dream Theater)
Gotta give them points for the intro, even if they used some actual sound clips from Through Her Eyes. While I love AFIL and this is a very faithful cover (aside from the vocals), I'm not sure if I liked how faithful they stuck to the song. There are glimpses of originality in places, like the harmonies every once in awhile, but if you've heard the Dream Theater version you've pretty much heard this song.

dreamtheatervt
Warrel Dane - "Patterns" (Simon And Garfunkel)
Not a bad song, about what I'd expect from Warrel Dane. I had a problem with how ordinary it sounds and unlike "The Sound Of Silence" that Nevermore did there wasn't really a driving force. Dunno if I'd go back to it.

Runner Up

Marvellous G
She & Him - "You Really Got A Hold On Me" (???)
I really liked the laid back atmosphere of the song. The male and female vocals worked really well, especially harmonizing. There's nothing more I can say aside the fact that the song is damn entrancing.

Winner

hefdaddy42
Gov't Mule - "Cortez The Killer" (Neil Young)
Ok this one's a bit unfair since I absolutely love the Dave Matthews cover, mostly because of Warren Haynes' gorgeous playing style and tone. I think I prefer that version a bit more but this version still delivers in all the right places. Some parts moved a little sluggish but overall it sounded great. The Pink Floydish part at the end with the synths was actually kinda neat.

Current points:

hefdaddy42 - 20
Sigz - 14
Portrucci -14
Marvellous G - 13
Volk9 - 12
dreamtheatervt -11

Round 5 Point System

Ok well first off this round is running a bit different. Since hef would clearly win even under the 6 to 1 point system all users must submit a wager with their song choice. This'll be Jeopardy style so you can wager up to the amount of points you have. You can either win that amount or lose half of that value and I'll subtract it from your total. The way you win your wager is whether or not I like the song, so it's a 50/50 deal. There is no ranking this time, just point wagers.

Round 5: Color Songs

Songs with colors in the title. Any genre, any band, go nuts.

I love that cover! :heart

Yeah, both you and Birch can join.

The point of the game is to introduce songs that the host might not know or is not that familiar with right? It would be a cheap shot to suggest for example Heartattack to Sigz IMO..

Yeah, there's no point in recommending stuff I've already listened to.

Also the game shouldn't start till after I finish this one, which shouldn't be more than a few days.

Of course. I wasn't planning on starting until this one's done.

I'd love to participate in the next game if there are any spaces. Though I guess Sigz can involve as many people as he wants.

Sigz, I don't know if Orcus just mistyped, but is the band he wrote as "Fanthomas" actually Fantomas, Mike Patton/Dave Lombardo's project? I vaguely remember them covering that theme I think.

FYI, You've Really Got A Hold On Me is a song originally by The Miracles (I reacted on that smiley in your post)  :)

I love DMB's Cortez, so I'll definitely give that version a listen to. Also thanks Zydar, all I knew was that the Beatles did a version that was itself a cover.

I'd like to participate again in the next game, but it would be a bit unfair as I'd been in this one. Still, if there's room. Now to think of a final song...

I'm just going to assume that Black and White both count as colours, and therefore I have sent my song.  :)

Yeah, Rich and Voxyn can both join. That might be it for my round though.

So current players are:

Gorille
73109
kingshmegland
BirchBoy
Orcus
Rich
The Voxiain

Sigz, I don't know if Orcus just mistyped, but is the band he wrote as "Fanthomas" actually Fantomas, Mike Patton/Dave Lombardo's project? I vaguely remember them covering that theme I think.

Yeah, that's the one. Awesome band, and Lombardo's a beast. Also has the guitarist from The Melvins and the bassist from Mr. Bungle.

Round 5 Results

Marvellous G
Bob Dylan - "Tangled Up In Blue"
Wager: 13
About what I'd expect from Dylan. I'd probably only listen to it once in awhile but it wasn't bad. I'll give this one a nod.

Sigz
The Birthday Massacre - "Red Stars"
Wager: 8
Hard to judge since I don't really listen to this type of music. Some of the guitar work was cool even though it was basic. Overall I don't think it's my cup of tea.

Volk9
Miles Davis - "Blue In Green"
Wager: 12
What an awesome laid back song. This is the kind of jazz I need to get more of.

Portrucci
Thrice - "Blood Clots and Black Holes"
Wager: 10
You caught me at just the right time as I'm really digging Thrice. Didn't catch me as much as their other stuff but I definitely liked it.

dreamtheatervt
Bigelf - "Blackball"
Wager: 11
My biggest problem with Bigelf is the "guess that band" riff game I can play with nearly every one of their songs. That being said this song definitely encompasses everything I expect of the band and do enjoy it, especially that Pink Floyd inspired instrumental section.

hefdaddy42
Heart - "Black On Black"
Wager: 9
Heart's very hit or miss from me. That being said I really loved the energy behind this song despite how 80s it sounds. It's got that "Barracuda" triplet rhythm which helped drive it. Maybe a little too synthy but overall I liked it.

Points Total
5th Place: Sigz with 10 points
4th Place: dreamtheatervt with 22 points
3rd Place: Portrucci and Volk9 with 24 points
2nd Place: Marvellous G with 26 points

Winner:

hefdaddy with 29 points! Congratulations. Sigz is up next.

I felt bad when I saw the final total and remembered you were up next. I kept thinking "Aww shit he's gonna fuck me good when I get suggesting the next game".

I'd suggest making a new thread for your game since I hate the "hijacking" of current threads like the Top 50 that's going on with the DT songs. I feel it's easier to check on as well if I see new posts in the "Sigz Song Roulette" thread instead of a "Orcus' Song Roulette - A Music Contest (Now up: Sigz)" thread.

For anyone else...if you want progressive rock/metal choices, I'm probably an ideal choice as I have lots of obscure (and good) stuff.  If you want stuff outside that, I'm spotty at best.

Glad to see my wager sort of paid off. As you liked Volk's Miles Davis recommendation so much (as do I), you owe it to yourself to get/check out Kind of Blue, it's in my top albums of all time and probably the best jazz album I've ever heard.
