In general, yeah. In here, no.

Underrated:
Jeff Beck in the sense that a lot of young people don't have a clue about him.
John Mayer in the sense that a lot of people can't appreciate his guitar prowess because of the pop tunes he writes (which are excellent in their own right).

He frequently tops lists of the greatest guitarists of all time. He's world-renowned for more or less single-handedly developing the metal guitar sound. Since 1970, he's been the leader of one of the most important and most successful heavy metal bands in the world. Virtually every hard rock and heavy metal guitar player to come after him would name him as an influence. If not a direct influence, he has influenced every metal guitar player indirectly because Black Sabbath, and his riffs, have seeped into the subconscious of every musician who delves into the genre. How, then, is he "underrated?"

I think he is completely "ok-rated" amongst people who know what they are talking about, but I think he needs to be a household name amongst Page, Hendrix, Santana, and Van Halen. He is that awesome and is, like you said, the founder of all things heavy. He is probably my 3rd favorite guitar player ever.
-
Under rated: Everybody in Mudvayne but their guitarist.

Neal Schon (guitar-Journey), Michael Ivins (bass-Flaming Lips), David Coverdale (vocals-Deep Purple/Whitesnake), Brann Dailor (drums-Mastodon), Pete Trewavas (bass-Marillion), and Johnny and Colin Greenwood (guitar/bass-Radiohead) are great musicians that don't get talked about enough anywhere.
Numbers: how is Tony Iommi underrated? So many people refer to him as "the riff master."
Zbomber: I don't think anyone underrates Brian May. No one else has that unmistakable tone.
-
Like I said, he is perfectly rated amongst metal heads but is completely shoved off by most of the other musical world.
-
Zbomber: I don't think anyone underrates Brian May. No one else has that unmistakable tone.
Maybe, but I hardly see him on greatest lists for guitarists when people do them... so maybe not underrated, but quite often overlooked. I also think he is an incredible vocalist, so I think he is a little underrated in that category as well.
-
Like I said, he is perfectly rated amongst metal heads but is completely shoved off by most of the other musical world.
I totally get your point. He isn't quite a household name in comparison to other guitar players like the ones you mentioned. On the other hand, who the hell cares? He's massively appreciated by the people and subculture he deserves to be appreciated by.

I couldn't agree with this more if I wanted to. Chad Gray is a fantastic vocalist and a good lyricist. Ryan is probably the most technically impressive bassist in alternative metal, and Matt is a Grade A drummer. Hell, Greg's a good guitarist too. He's just not as much of a standout as the other members, but he's not bad at all. Add all four members up and you've got the best and most underrated alternative metal band ever.
And that reminds me. Fieldy from Korn is criminally underrated; he's one of my favorite bassists of all time. His style and tone is really unique...plus, he's never smothered in the mix.
-
Chad Gray is a fantastic vocalist and a good lyricist.
I used to think this until I listened to Hellyeah for the first time :|

Nothing. He's thinking about the inexistance of a sucky band that fortunately doesn't exist and has never released an album and never will.

I take it you haven't watched Creed Live yet?
I'd agree that Scott's post-weathered general suckiness as a singer and a person often translates into people not wanting him to give him the little bit of credit he's rightfully due. But I just don't see how someone who's been that sucessful for no apparent reason could be construed as underrated.

Someone like Steven Wilson is tricky for me. While I'd say he's overrated to the nth degree by his fans, the fact that the vast majority of the music-loving community doesn't even know who he is kind of complicates that.
Saying someone like Portnoy is a bit more understandable to me. While he does seem to be one of, if not THE, hardest working person in music, his performances of late have been nothing spectacular. Read: I said his performances have been "nothing spectacular"-- that's not to say that they're bad or anything, but they can't hold a candle to those performances of his from DT's "Middle Years." Back then, you could just plain hear how bad he wanted those awards-- like you can hear how bad Gavin Harrison wants them now.
Getting back on track, the difference between Portnoy and Wilson is that Portnoy continues to win awards and get all sorts of fame while putting out less than jaw-dropping material. Wilson, as far as I know, doesn't not. Which is a shame, regardless of what you think about Porcupine Tree's most recent output.
Seriously, though. Unless I wanted to piss off someone on the boards, neither make my shortlist. ;D

KURT COBAIN- Being influential doesn't mean anything if you're influential in a bad way.
Ozzy Osbourne- Or Zakk Wylde. Or, hell, anyone involved in Ozzy's solo career. Too many meatheads who don't know anything about metal going on and on about how great Ozzy is.
Green Day- Sloppily carried the torch for a genre I hate into the next millennium.
Muse- Commercial rock with a little something extra is nice, but it really shouldn't be THIS popular. They're not that good, people.
Nightwish- They're good, but for a band that seems to be one of the more generic and least interesting in their genre, they seem to get all the love.
Underrated
Echolyn- This band always seems to have gotten the short end of the straw, especially with their label, but they're better and more creative than a great deal of their prog-rock contemporaries.
dredg- I still can not figure out why they have not had their moment yet. Like Echolyn, I guess it's just too much tough luck with labels and whathaveyou.
Alter Bridge- Given Creed's success, there's absolutely no reason why Alter Bridge shouldn't be dominating the airwaves. I chalk their relative failure to the masses unhealthy shallowness and obsession with personalities over substance.

-
Underrated- Guitarist of Riverside
I don't think so, really. I mean, he's a good lead, but he doesn't really contribute to the songs at all except for the lead parts, and sometimes he is playing lead where it is not needed.
-
Underrated:
Antoine Dufour - Seriously this guy can play things I can only dream while maintaining a great grove. A great acoustic composer
dredg - I don't know how Catch Without Arms didn't become a success but it didn't and that makes me a :sadpanda:
-
Calling SW overrated is kinda weird, considering all his stuff actually is brilliant.
Saying that just by hearing some PT-songs doesn't make any sense, because there's No-Man, Bass Communion, I.E.M, Blackfield and the solo-album, just to name a few.. that are all fantastic projects. ;)
-
I personally think that calling guys like Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain "overrated" is a bit of a misnomer. Over-exposed, yes.... which really comes from the whole "cult-of-personality" thing that occurred after their deaths. I mean, in the popular mind, Elvis is remembered more for that indelible image and attitude than for the music itself (no knock on the music).
-
Karnivool is CRIMINALLY underrated.
Seriously.
-
Maybe if they changed their stupid band name, they would be adequately rated?
