Title: Death Metal Appreciation Topic
Post by: Seventh Son on July 05, 2010, 03:57:15 PM
As the thread title indicates, this is for discussion and appreciation for all things death metal (Excluding deathcore, because there is already a -core topic). This can include Old School Death Metal, Technical (Or sometimes known as weedly weedly :P) Death Metal, Deathrash, Blackened Death Metal, etc.

All those and more are definitely welcome here!

P.S. If you don't like Death Metal (And I can understand why it would be off-putting, but that isn't the point of the topic), then I must kindly ask you not to post here.

Now, time to get to an old classic.... any Morbid Angel fans lying around here? Altars of Madness is one of my favorite albums ever  :metal

Death Metal is an excellent sub-genre, and is deserving of many many threads, but yeah. I already made one. :p

Post-Clayman In Flames isn't nearly as good as TJR, Colony, etc.

That's what I meant.  Clayman and earlier era In Flames is way better than Arch Enemy.

Both excellent bands, but Death has that whole thrash thing going on as well, so I have to give it to Chuck.

Altars of Madness is pretty thrashy, and David's vocals sound more like late 80's Thrash than Death Metal to me.

I love Death.... but this is wrong on so many levels.

Morbid Angel's first three are like, perfection in terms of death metal. And they all sound different, each one has their own personality. It isn't like they copy/paste their formula for each album like millions of other Death Metal bands do. They made arguably three of the most influential Death Metal albums of all time.

Morbid Angel's first four albums are absolutely fantastic and are death metal classics in by any definition of the word. Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy are just...better. I don't know how to explain it really.

Domination is rather weak compared to their first three, honestly. Its decent, but David Vincent doesn't even sound like he's trying. However, Formulas Fatal to the Flesh is an amazing piece and a must-listen. Both of those albums by Death are great, but I wouldn't rank them higher than 8/10. 9/10 on a really good day, but that's about it. Those four albums by MA are all 10/10.

Formulas is nowhere near the caliber of the earlier MA albums, let alone Death.

You say that just because it isn't David Vincent on vocals.

No. I say it because it's not as good as their other albums. The lack of David Vincent is part of it, but the songs just aren't as good either.

I honestly love Formulas and would easily put them on the same level as their first three, and much better than Death. Granted, I really love Death, but still, its Morbid Fucking Angel. The songwriting is different from the other albums, but I think that's what I like so much about Morbid Angel. I can't really say any two albums of theirs sound alike at all.

No but seriously that's cool, Morbid Angel is alright. I just think Death was better for two reasons: the lyrics and Chuck's vocals.

Kelly Schafer is probably one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Any genre, period. His voice is just total badassery and fits Atheist's sound perfectly. I can't wait for their fourth album  :metal

Get Piece of Time and Elements, see what you think. Piece of Time is more in the vein of early thrash metal with prog tendencies (Other than long songs, Atheist doesn't really do them, but I honestly think that it would really water their stuff down if they did that, they aren't that kind of band) thrown in here and there. Elements is the opposite, there's a full-on samba number on the album o_o. Its definitely their jazziest/most progressive album.

But all Atheist is fucking amazing, and I want to hear their next album soon enough. If it interests anyone, there's going to be a cover of YYZ on it. Yes,  death metal cover of YYZ. Tell me that doesn't sound fucking awesome.

I'm not really into death metal anymore. It's sometimes hard to get back into a specific kind of music, but I can't even like Nile (for i.e.) as much as I did anymore either.

However; I'm looking forward to The Faceless' next album due later this year. I tried listening to Symbolic a few times, but it turned out to be an overrated turd so I deleted it AND S.B.G + Leprosy. Honestly Death sucks and I don't see the hype for them kinds of bands anymore.

Death Metal isn't for everyone. I don't mean mean that in an elitist way, but its still very much true. As for me, its the raw intensity of Death Metal that attracts me to it. The no prisoners, "let's just kick some ass because we can!" attitude that is often brought to the table in death metal. Its very silly, yes, but hell I don't mind it because Death Metal, plain and simply, brings the riffs.

Death is cool, but I think there's much better in the realm of Death Metal, but I'm more of an OSDM (Old School Death Metal) kind of guy.

I never said they weren't. I was referring to most tech-death (There are notable exceptions though), Melodeath, Melodic death, etc.
