Anyone check out the new track on their myspace? "Set Fire to the Hive"..fucking smokes! If the rest of this upcoming album is of that one's quality, this new album of theirs has some top 10 potential for me.

riyl: Fair to Midland, Tool

I love these guys, I will listen to the track some time tonight

"Karnivool’s new album Sound Awake is confirmed to be released in Australia on June 5 as part of a unique worldwide partnership with Sony Music. The new partnership with Sony Music Australia has allowed the band to maintain their independence in Australia whilst getting the helping hand overseas that any Australian band needs to make waves internationally. Karnivool will build on the inroads already made in the US and UK and other territories with a release through the Sony Independent Network / Red Distribution early in 2010."

also the signed preorders cds are now sold out.

Kickass band. Will be picking this up the week it comes out.
-
Does anyone know where/how to get paid-for downloads of this or their other album? I have an iTunes account and since i have seen a lot of discussion of this band, I wanted to D/L the record. I had to change countries in iTunes main page, then it said my account didn't allow me to get it. I'll definitely give this a listen or hear the samples when it gets released - but as far as acquiring it, I'd like to buy downloads as I don't think I want to shell out international shipping of the actual CD. (I still buy CDs - but i'm new to this band and not that hardcore of a fan to bother with the $$ to get it to the USA)

the whole album is up on their myspace now.
-
new album is quite good. I really look forward to hearing it without the compression of these myspace uploads. The crash and splash cymbals have that horrible compression at those high-pitched tones that bugs the hell out of me.
That being said, this is really thick record. It's 72 minutes, the last 2 tracks being 10+ each. I'm not sure if it will go the way of say the new Archive album or perhaps even the new dredg album..or if it's length be it's biggest weakness.
Because on their own, each track is quite good..some even great. I suppose it's not entirely without repeated melodic sense or the tonality and writing approach being kind of similar on some tracks, but overall, I don't know if that'll hurt this as much as it being a bit of a project to get all the way through. I think depth-wise, it definitely surpasses Themata by a decent margin. But how addictive it becomes for me only time will tell.
Can the whole thing be taken-in as a larger concept? That for me, may make a difference..often when a record of this length and scale goes further for me. More people certainly are going to want to hear this, regardless.
-
Just bought this album, so far it sounds great! I really like the direction they've taken this album. The music is very tool-esque and the song structures are excellent, I appreciate it when bands don't take the safe route and repeat the chorus 3-4 times each song.
Highly recommend this band!
-
Just saw them for the second night in a row last night. This album comes off really well live. It's not as crowd-wrenching as some of their earlier stuff (The pit went insane for Shutterspeed/Themata/Roquefort) but it still makes for one hell of a show.
Although the album cover itself and the cover booklet are somewhat... Minimalist? There's not a lot on them at all, which is kinda cool, but the degree to which it's done here is almost frustrating. Album art etc makes a big difference for me, which is one of the reasons I still go out and buy CD's, but there's not a lot here for me to look at, which makes it kinda sad.
-
Saw them last night:

I really love the new album, as well as the debut. Been listening to them both on Spotify since discovering they were on there, really great stuff!
Yeah the new album is pretty long, so doesn't feel so concise as Themata, but the quality of the music really is top-notch, so I haven't found it dragging yet.

It's nice to hear good vocals over heavy music. To me my favorite type of heavy has melody in it. I think that's why I don't like a lot of the scream/growl bands. And why I like Karnivool.
-
It's a really great album, glad you guys are getting into them! Ian Kenny's vocals are amazing and he has been flawless live the 3-4 times i've seen them!

they may tour the States next Spring as they are already confirmed for SXSW in March.
-
Gawd, this album is amazing. Managed to make my top 10 of 2009 in just the last week.
Every song is just so original and unique, this band really has it's own style.
Favorite tracks anyone?
Simple Boy (that bass riff! and I love the parts where the groove is half time)
New Day (great melodies and lyrics)
Set Fire To the Hive (just badass and frantic)
Deadman (pretty epic)
-
Best tracks off the new album for me are - Change, set fire to the hive and new day.
Cote and Themata are probably my two favourite tracks by them still.
-

Unlikely...they're touring in Europe after SXSW

I thought the Fair to Midland thing got cancelled?
Or is that something else I'm thinking of?
-
nah
Fair to Midland just posted some stuff via twitter and myspace about the tour.
https://twitter.com/FairToMidland

Fair to Midland probably are assuming by April they will have the equipment replaced from what they lost in the accident.
Karnivool it appears will be in Europe before SXSW

I know they're in Europe before SXSW, I've already got my tickets
Dunno why I thought the FTM shows were cancelled tho
-
Wow, this album is bad-ass.
All I Know, Deadman, Change, Simple Boy, New Day are standouts.

-
bump.
US Release of Sound Awake is this week (2/16). Anyone pick it up?
they just posted on their blog about AOL streaming the entire album for free all week.

after all the hype this band got i acquired this album and the 05 release themata. While I enjoy both...and listened to Sound Awake first......Themata just buries it in terms of song structure, balance and all together awesomeness.
That being said.
If this band came within a 100 miles of me, I'd pay to go see them.
-
A friend of mine burned a couple of their albums for me to listen to. I haven't yet, but I'm checkin' out Set Fire to the Hive now. I definitely like what I'm hearing.
-
*resurrects thread*
How the fuck is this band not huge? One of my favorites for the past couple months: both of their albums are pure gold.
-J
-
Only heard Sound Awake, but it surely has some brilliant stuff.
There are some songs that hasn't grown to me a lot yet, but songs like:
Umbra and The Caudal Lure are masterpieces, and lets not forget other amazing songs like: Simple Boy, Goliath and New Day.
-
i have this one and the previous....great discs...just awesome stuff...I thank nick for pimping them mercifulessly
-
I love a band that lets it's sound breath and Karnivool does this. Sound Awake gets played at least twice a week.
-
I thank nick for pimping them mercifulessly
well the posts I've made about them over the last 3 years speak for themselves, although I will not hold back the fact I regard this album as a pretty big disappointment overall. But that doesn't change the fact I am a supporter of them (and how they stand out so much over so many of the tool/chevelle clones that keep popping up from down under and other parts).
-
Every song on Sound Awake is amazing. It was my first Karnivool album, and now I'm getting to know 'Themata'. Less layered and complex, but more direct and hard-hitting. Loving this stuff as well!

Shameless plugging but this relevant. Review of their London show the other week, absolutely incredible and cemented their position as one of my favourite bands

This band is so awesome. I was thinking about making a thread for them the other day.
-
Sound Awake is a really good album. There are one or two tracks that are filler, but the rest ranges from good to amazing.
-
New Day, Umbra, and Deadman are the best them.
-
Pretty much, yeah. Simple Boy is great as well.
I'm a bit disappointed of Change, to be honest. The intro to it at the end of Deadman sounds so promising, and then it goes into a totally different (and imo disappointing) direction. Also, it sort of goes pretty much nowhere towards the end, it doesn't work that well as a closer, unfortunately.
-
Yeah, I completely agree. Also, I wasn't very impressed with the singles on this album.
But overall it's an excellent album.
-
They were great at Sonisphere yesterday. Opened up the stage really well and impressed a lot of people I think.
-
Pretty much, yeah. Simple Boy is great as well.

The intro is the final track on themata called change (part one).
To be honest, Change is my favourite track on the album with set fire to the hive, deadman and new day not far behind. Great band!
-
These guys need more recognition around here. Sound Awake is a masterpiece.

*shuts mouth very quickly*
What would their genre be classified as?? I've never heard anything by them. *ducks for cover*
-
Hmm... I can't really classify them, but I can say they certainly have a lot of Tool influence.
-
*stands to attention*
Tool??? I fucking like Tool??
-
Yeah seriously, check them out. The Tool influence shines on "Deadman".
-
Pretty much, yeah. Simple Boy is great as well.

I know. I actually purchased Themata before SA, and Change Pt. 1 sounded very promising, but I still like it better in the SA version.

I'm very surprised you haven't heard of them being from Australia. The vocalist (Ian kenny) is also the vocalist of Birds of Tokyo who are currently experiencing a lot of hype.
Their sound owes a lot to Tool but their genre is more similar to The Butterfly Effect I would say.
-
Great band! If I had to pick a favorite song it would be 'New Day'.

*MAJOR THREAD RESURRECTION*
They were awesome as ever at their London show last night. Any band that persuades me to crowd surf must be pretty good!
-
i hadnt heard of these guys until a few weeks ago when sound awake (incorrectly) made someone's top 10 of 2010 on this forum...then i started noticing it like crazy when some others were comparing their 2010 lists to their 2009 lists.
so i decided to check it out, and...wow! i've probably spun it 35 or 40 times already. great album from top to bottom. im already eager to hear the follow-up.
-
Yeah I haven't listened to either of these albums for several months, but I played the hell out of 'em when I did. Great stuff on both of them.
I look forward to their next follow up too.
-J
-
THIS THREAD IS REBORN
Just to say these guys are awesome. Been spinning their two albums since December/January of this year and they deserve a lot more attention. I agree with you all... Sound Awake is amazing. Umbra, Deadman, New Day, All I Know = :hefdaddy
But hey, we are forgetting about Themata... Another excellent album. Title track, Shutterspeed, and MOTHERFUCKING MAUSEUM are great, great songs.
-
Karnivool are legitimately an awesome band. As in, they inspire awe - I was almost drooling when I saw them in Perth last year (me n my bro got right up front slightly to the left of centre of the stage).
Ian Kenny (I think I've said this before) is one of the world's leading heavy music vocalists right now, anyone who hasn't heard him should track down some live tracks immediately.
Sound Awake has been in my rotation for 2 years plus and I regularly spin the whole thing.
PLUS, they started in the same town as me! (Gosnells, WA :D).
Not nearly enough can be said about this band, or about Sound Awake.
-
Sound Awake has grown on me so much. It's certainly one of my favorite albums ever. This band is incredible, as I've posted in this thread before. :P
-
Karnivool are awesome, plus they come from my home town! :D
-
ive maintained something like a 1.44X per day (maybe more) spinning of sound awake for over 3 months now...i think its my retroactive #1 album of 09.
-
Karnivool are awesome, plus they come from my home town! :D
Do you mean Perth generally, or Gozzie?
-
I mean Perth lol :p
-
Both their albums are sick. I haven't listened to either in awhile, but both are great, great stuff.
Is there a new one in the works yet?
-J
-
they are working on a new one but I would bet on it being out in 2012 rather than this year
-
Major BUMP
So, the 'vool are playing two one-off shows in Perth and Albany (Australia, sorry New Yorkers :P) on the 15th and 16th of April. Their press release says they will likely be one of a handful of appearances this year, so its a no-brainer for me :D
However:
Between everyone's various projects and the ongoing work in the studio writing the follow up to Sound Awake, we have found a window to play a couple of special shows in WA. These shows will be the last of the Sound Awake era, as well as a possible pointer of things to come.
:omg: oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh yeah. Any other Perthites or Albanarians thinking of going?
-
Where are they playing? I'm definitely thinking of going. Really hoping they get more proggy and maybe a bit heavier.
-
Its at Metro City, saw Opeth there a couple of years ago and they were awesome (missed out on DT though...). Definately gonna get there early and try for a balcony spot ;D
-
I will probably go aswell, could you please notify me in this thread when tickets would be on sale and stuff? That would be great :D
-
Haha they are on sale now; $40 from Heatseeker +bf, card & delivery charges (so its about $50; god damn ticketing duopolies lol) I think they are available at 78s & all the other usual places. My bet is itl be a sell out, they won't be playing much this year bar BDO and/or Soundwave I reckon.
-
OK, I'm going on camp for two days but I will try to get tickets soon! Thanks for that :)
-
So the one-off show is tomorrow night. Based on the press release announcing the show, there is gonna be some new stuff demo-ed. I'll keep those who are interested informed.
Needless to say, :metal
-
Have fun dude, let us know how it goes!
-J
-
I didn't realise Metro city was 18+, man that sucks, its only 3 months till I'm 18 :(
-
I feel your pain. I was 17 and 10 months when Opeth came to Perth for the first time since Still Life or something like that.
-
So the one-off show is tomorrow night. Based on the press release announcing the show, there is gonna be some new stuff demo-ed. I'll keep those who are interested informed.
Needless to say, :metal
Do inform us please!
I need more vool in my life!
-
Showtime :metal
-
Awesome! Have fun!
-
So, uhhh, that was awesome :D
The 'vool didn't come on until about 10, had two support bands (first of which was meh, second was pretty good - kind of hard rock/prog with some hardcore/post hardcore mixed in, theyl go places, I'll get the name from my bro tomorrow)
But Karnivool did not disappoint! They were spot on as usual, sounded crystal clear too. That was probably to do with the fact they didn't crank the volume like most bands that play this venue. The deep, chunky bass lines sounded mint (and were probably the highlight in a sonic sense), and Ian was as pitch perfect as ever. Sound engineer screwed up a couple of times though...
And...drumroll...they played a new song!
It was very deep, low and heavy. But not in a thrashing kind of way, it was kind of like the part near the end of Umbra in terms of pace. It was definately in the demo stage though, some parts were very raw and didn't match the coherance of Sound Awake. I remarked to my bro it seemed kind of contrived in its present form; he agreed.
Good news though: it was very, very progressive. It transitioned maybe four times, from chunky and deep to very soft, to atmospheric, to a bit wacky (that was the contrived-sounding bit) and slowly building back to the deep and chunky section. Certainly looking forward to this one once its finished!
The setlist was a little different than usual, in that Roquefort didn't get a play but Fear of the Sky was more than an adequate replacement. They did something improv-y in the atmospheric part too, which was very well received. The set ended with New Day, which came off brilliantly and was probably the best song of the night. Setlist was:
Goliath
Simple Boy
Fear of the Sky (w/ atmospheric interlude)
Themata
All I Know
Umbra
COTE
Deadman
Set Fire to the Hive
New song (title: Impossible?)
New Day
-------------
Change
Some More of the Same
All in all, brilliant show as always. I'd pay twice the price to see them, they just seem to be on such a rapid upward trajectory. If the new song is anything to go by, you should be excited for what's next from the Karnivault.
Note: I wrote this on my phone on the way home on the train, so apologies if its shittily spelled, poorly grammarised and/or it is a brain dump. And yes, grammarised is a word. I will not be told otherwise.
-
:hefdaddy this band! Just checked them out, how are they not famous?
-
BUMP for those who didnt see this before.
-
:hefdaddy this band! Just checked them out, how are they not famous?
they're working on it.
i get the impression they're huge down under, but i'm not sure exactly. huge might be an overstatement. aussie's, can you confirm?
-
I wouldn't say "huge" like radio play or anything. But in rock/metal circles, yeah they're right up there atm.
Ian Kenny's other band, Birds of Tokyo are pretty big though.
-
hrrrmmm. you'd think they'd be on the radio. well, you'd kinda think so. set fire totally fits the radio format.
then again, arcade fire won that there grammy, and i've never heard em on canadian rock radio.
i dont think ive ever actually heard em, but i assume if they won the grammy, they must play commercially viable, radio friendly stuff.
-
Most people pretty much knows them here in Perth, even people who don't like metal, they're quite famous. Not sure about over east.
-
Yeah Perth for sure, they've got a pretty big following over east too.
In terms of radio, they get played (or did in 2009) on indie radio. Australian commercial radio is run by 2.5 companies who are slaves to the major record labels; we get nothing but pop essentially :(
-
I'm kind of bummed that I didn't take the chance to see them when they played in Europe (they toured a few places in Germany as well). As it seems, they've already started writing a new album, so there's something to be excited about.
-
Just thought I'd say that I listened to Sound Awake from Simple Boy to Change last night for the first time in a couple of months...
:hefdaddy
Still up there as a favourite, hasn't aged poorly one bit.
-
I listened to this album a week ago. It was good, though nothing stood out. But hey, more listens to digest in the future! It had a good vibe.
-
Really good band!! I dont see the tool comparisons these guys are more interesting....
-
It probably takes a couple of listens, but IMO its one of the most consistently great albums released in recent history. Nothing stands out, the whole thing is at 11/10, with perhaps Illumine the only exception at 10.5/10.
I've made my own little mix of Synops>Omitted for Clarity>Deadman>Change Pt.1>Change Pt.2 where they flow into eachother; trying to find another track to kick it off with to make it a 40-45 min musical orgasm.
-
Can anyone change the thread title to just "Karnivool" or something? Sound Awake is 2 years old now, and they've already started to play new songs in their shows, namely this one called "The Refusal". Haven't heard it yet. I've researched it but the quality of the videos is too bad to actually hear something.
-
I thought it was called The Rundown?
Regardless, I concur. Man I can't wait for a new album from these blokes! Particularly if the new track is typical of the stuff they are writing.
-

Soundscape froze to death in Minnesota. PM a mod.
-
I think I saw these guys open for Porcupine Tree at the Warfield in San Francisco last year. They impressed me.
edit - this thread inspired me to check out Sound Awake. Bought it and listened to some on MySpace. Very much looking forward to the experience. I anticipate once I'm done, I'll be picking up their first album and then the EPs in short order.
I wish I could remember more of their set when they opened for PT in San Fran. I was so excited about PT, while I watched Karnivool's entire set and enjoyed it (I bought some sort of CD single awhile back but it disappeared), I was so amped up for PT, I had forgotten about this band.
-
A word of caution though; Sound Awake is quite different to their first full length and the EP (the EP particularly). They were a bit less proggy and a bit more generic/nu(ish) metal in their early days; although the stuff is still awesomely killer. I went to type a list of awesome tracks from Themata, but had pretty much every song on it...
Favourite 'Vool track: Deadman :metal
-
My fave is New Day, closely followed by Umbra and Change Pt. 2.
-
I'm more of a hard rock and metal fan than I am a prog fan, so I probably will like the older stuff better. But I'll let Sound Awake get here, let it digest and then move backward.
-
I really tried to like this album, but it just doesn't work for me. The first one was incredible.
-
Favourite 'Vool track: Deadman :metal
I think I agree.
And their two albums are very different, but they're both great IMO.
-J
-
'Vool news!
I'm a bit late with this, but anyway. The boys are touring Australia in June/July with a suite of new tracks to demo ;D
Needless to say, I have my ticket and have organised my crew; already sooooo pumped for the gig (28 Jul for me)
Btw, Sound Awake is still as flawless as when I first listened to it.
-
I want them back in Europe ;) And yes, Sound Awake is fucking awesome! :tup
-
Sound Awake is pretty much all I've been listening to for the past week. :metal :metal
-
I've tried at least five different times to get into Sound Awake and none of them have ever been successful... :(
-
I've tried at least five different times to get into Sound Awake and none of them have ever been successful... :(
Then you are doing it wrong :P
But seriously, you need to find a comfy seat, turn the lights out, pur a scotch on the rocks and pop in a cigar and just tune out*. I find it is best to listen to it all the way through, with no distractions and just absorb it. By the time you make it to Change pt 2, the drums in the intro give you goosebumps (well they do me, anyway).
*note: scotch and cigar are not 100% necessary.
-
^ in fact, smoking the herb might work better. :hat
-
This album slays. I'm a huge Fair To Midland fan. Karnivool is awesome.
Also, fans of this band might like Rishloo. I think I made a thread awhile back, but check 'em out. They sound a lot similar to Karnivool.
-
Whatever they do with this next album, I hope it doesn't stray too far away from what made Sound Awake awesome.
-
They demo'd a track at a show towards the middle of last year which was quite similar to Set Fire to the Hive in terms of tempo, but very progressive and very awesome. Its called The Rundown and is on noobtube I believe. So fingers crossed the rest keep going along a similar path.
-
i feel the same as Phoenix87x...but i thought i'd read months back someone in the band saying the new one will be as different from Sound Awake as Sound Awake was from the debut (which i haven't been able to overly get into).
Riceball's post sounds contrary, however.
-
Don't get me wrong, the track was very different from Sound Awake in terms of sound...that's just the best comparison I could make :lol
And Themata is pretty damn awesome as well...track one to five are as flawless as Sound Awake while the rest seem to be sort of baby steps to the sounds on Sound Awake. Perhaps the only weakish track is Mauseum - but its still great.
-
i'm throwing on Themata now. hopefully it further wins me over.
-
That idea sounds really good, Riceball, I'll have to set aside a night for that, haha... what angers me is that I really like Dead Letter Circus, and they have a pretty similar sound to these guys, plus they're both from Australia. I'm going to try Themata before I try Sound Awake again.
-
...that was an enjoyable spin. :metal mighta been the most i've gotten into it (only up to circa 9 spins now).
-
Going to see these guys in a few months!
-
Which show Jirp? I missed out on the first show - mates were taking a while to mobilise - but got tix for the second. Very pumped!
And great to see the lovin' being shown ITT :metal
-
First show :(
-
I had to miss them the only time they were close to me in the Netherlands. I was really, really bummed for that and I hope they will return one day :) Sound Awake is amazing.
-
I really tried to like this album, but it just doesn't work for me. The first one was incredible.
I came back here to say that I decided that I needed to give this album more time to grow on me, so I recommitted to spinning it a few more times and I have to admit that after having taken a break from it for a few months, for some reason I am enjoying it a lot more now than I did when I first got it.
I think I still prefer Themata, but this one definitely has some really cool stuff going on.
NP: The Caudal Lure :metal
-
I finally got this album recently too after hearing about it forever. Good shit!
Favourite 'Vool track: Deadman :metal
Yup, that's the standout track for me so far.
-
10 days until the tour starts :metal
-
Yep! Still a month and a half till we see them. Should be good to see Sleepmakeswaves with them as well.
-
Its going to be sooo hard to not try and track down the demos...
I'm looking forward to Redcoats moreso (than SMW, not Karnivool ;)), if only because I haven't seen them live before.
-
Just letting everyone know:
My ears are still ringing (12 hours after the show)
The 'vool are getting better and better
Of the four demos they played (The Rundown and 3 other fresh ones), four absolutely slayed
Each demo had a completely different vibe and feel, but were oh so proggy
I seriously seriously cant wait for the new album now.
From memory set was:
Change (pt 1 & 2), flowing straight into---
The Refusal
Goliath
Simple Boy
First new demo (lumbering but light prog rock, sounded the most raw)
Umbra
COTE
Second new demo (an absolute monster prog/metal track, long too, 10/10)
Set Fire to the Hive
Roquefort
All I Know
-encore-
Third new demo (ridiculous, pompus proggy goodness, oh so good)
Themata
New Day
There could be a couple of tracks in the middle there, Jirp will probably be able to correct me. But in all seriousness, this new album needs to get its hustle on and come out.
Side note: Karnivool gigs are great for encores; the crowd always starts chanting "you said show me what you wanna be, I will never stand in your way. Take it back and then you say again, tell me what you wanna be,I will never stand in your waaaaaay". Its awesome :D
-
Yeah I was there on friday, loved it!! Wish we were at the same one :( I actually wore earplugs for a lot of it, it was pretty loud lol. I would probably slightly prefer your setlist - from what I remember, it was similar but we got Deadman but no Change and no Umbra. Yeah loved the new tracks, can't wait to hear the album too. Yeah the crowd was great :D Sleepmakeswaves were pretty good too though the sound wasn't too great for me, how was it for you?
-
We just hung at the back for the supports...seemed ok but certainly not crystal. Man Readcoats impressed me though, their vocalist was a boss!
-
Yeah they were pretty good, but I didn't catch all of their set as I was grabbing something to eat :p
-
Ears are still ringing :metal
-
Follow-up to my previous post: Themata is really good, and once I listened to Sound Awake again after listening to it, I liked it a lot more.
-
Drew Goddard gave an interview yesterday and he said that the new album is coming on or around August of this year, followed by a world tour.
-
I can't wait. Sound Awake is incredible and their performance at the Lowlands festival in 2011 was amazing. Absolutely nothing wrong with this band.

I am EXTREMELY excited about this...knowing the announcement is coming has had me on something of a 'vool bender the last couple of days.
-
Looking forward to it! Announced just a month before release!
-J
-
Decent song, I liked The Refusal better though.
-
Damn they're sounding advanced. Especially 'We Are' the beat is perceivable in basically two different subdivisions. If you know how to trick your mind to hear it both ways, it's almost like two radically different songs.

Just finished listening to the new album and its fine and everything, but just doesn't measure up to Sound Awake.
SA just felt like a perfect album from beginning to end, with consistent quality and a really decent flow. The new album just feels somewhat disjointed and inconsistent. Don't get me wrong, I do really like it, but my heart will always belong to Sound Awake.

I feel the same way about the new one.
-
Just listened to it on youtube; really good stuff. Way too early to compare it to their other albums yet.
The songs I had already heard (Refusal, We Are, something else I think) were my least favorite.
-J
-
I ordered the cd/dvd version. :tup
-
I've heard of these guys a while back and the song I heard must have been the wrong one for me.
For a better description, I found them to be too alt/rock/screamo/nu for my taste, so I filed them in the not for me bin.
From reading the local music press I knew they were local, and that they had a new album coming out.
So I checked out the, 'We Are' video and really liked what I heard. I specially like the singer.
So today I went to my local music store, I was intending to buy the CD/DVD, until I saw the price, $34.99 for a local release is ridiculous.
Now I do pay that but for Japanese or European imports, but no way in hell for a local release.
-
I really enjoyed Asymmetry. Sky Machine and Eidolon are absolutely outstanding songs.
I feel like this album felt more along the lines of Themata rather than Sound Awake. That's not exactly what everyone would prefer, of course, but as I prefer Themata (I know, heresy right) I was quite pleased with this album.
That being said, I need more listens to determine how much I really like it, though.
-
After several listens this album does pretty much nothing for me. It also sounds worse too: they should definitely consider bringing back the guy who produced and mixed Sound Awake.
I don't think this record will be a grower too: Sound Awake was, but I was still blown away at first listen by many of the tracks (Simple Boy, New Day, Set Fire to the Hive, Deadman etc). So far, I only really like the track 'Sky Machine'.
-
The new one is just as good as Sound Awake.
-
they should definitely consider bringing back the guy who produced and mixed Sound Awake.
so you want them to use someone to mix an album that has the cymbals sounding so compressed, they constantly clip? Because they do on Sound Awake constantly. I listened to it probably 15 or 20 times back in 2009 and while many of the songs were well-written, the cymbals sounded like a HIGH PITCHED TONED TAMBOURINE on literally 3/4 of the songs.
This new record, while the jury is still out a bit for myself, at least the mixing of the cymbals is CLEARLY BETTER, as I haven't noticed any high level of compression on 1 single track thus far.

Funny you mention this because I have heard about this 'cymbal' problem on Sound Awake. I'm not bothered by it though. I'm bothered by the mix of Asymmetry. It sounds like I'm listening to a crappy youtube or mp3 version, while I'm streaming it on Spotify in 'extreme quality'. Adding to that, the sound of the entire drumkit sounds overcompressed this time. Seriously, this album is way more compressed than Sound Awake was. Sound Awake sounds open and has dynamics, this one is pushing it all the time while sounding muddy as well.
-
I don't think I can agree, I think it sounds great and the songs are awesome too. Liked it on first listen, although I've only heard it twice now. I'll pay some attention to what it actually sounds like (production wise) the next time.
-

Loved, LOVED "Themata."
"Sound Awake" was too.....weird....for me. The songs I've heard from this new one sound like more of the same, so I guess I'll pass.
-
I ordered the cd/dvd version. :tup
Me too. As a result, I listened once to the stream and avoided really looking at too many comments. I scrolled and found this and wanted to reply. I can't wait til it comes. Wish they wouldn't have delayed release of the deluxe until Aug. 6 though. I want it!
-
Just listened to it and my first impression is that the second half of the album is much better than the first one. It didn't feel as strong as Sound Awake on the first tracks but it takes off from Aeons on. I like what I heard. I don't really know if it can surpass Sound Awake, but this is not a bad album at all. Guess It will take a few more listens to know.
-
I'm nearing the end of my first proper listen (the first listen was during a very stressful morning commute, and so I barely even noticed it). Anyway, safe to say that they didn't stick with any sort of formula for this one! So far I'm liking what I hear, but I feel like it will take a while to digest.
The bass tones are other-worldly...
-

I agree, second half is much stronger than the first.
At this point I don't think it's on par with Sound Awake or Themata, but it's pretty solid.

Wait, is this actually regarded as heresy? Because I enjoy Themata A LOT more than Sound Awake. That album has some of the best heavy rock tracks in the past decade: Cote, Themata, Roquefort, Shutterspeed. I love those four songs more than anything else in their library.
-
Ok, I've spun it a lot over the last few days (including a through near all-nighter), and I've got to say...I love it. It sounded sort of all-over-the place for the first 2-3 listens, but then it suddenly made sense. I still need to spend a little more time on the last few tracks, but it's all coming together now. I'm not going to rank it versus any of the others...they're all different enough that that it wouldn't be fair...
-
I have to take a huge walk of shame and say this album rocks, contrary to my first impressions. I've been listening to it almost non stop while being on vacation, and the album is great and sounds great too, especially on headphones.
-
Sky Machine now ranks among my 5 favorite Vool songs. Amazing song.
-
couldnt we have renamed this thing "The Karnivool Appreciation Thread" or something retarded like "Karnivool...blow?" ?
-
Saw them live yesterday in the Melkweg in Amsterdam. First show of the Europe tour. Here's my impression of the concert.
SETLIST SPOILERS BELOW
At the start of the gig, the guys went on and stuff just wasn't working. The whole band were just standing on stage, but the backing track that was supposed to play didn't start. And so the band were sorting things out for a few minutes, trying different connections with the cables etc.. weird popping noises were coming out ultra loud over the PA, and eventually 'New Groove' by Periphery started playing over the PA. A really strange beginning to the show!
By the time they launched into the first track ('Nachash'), you could still feel the uncomfortableness of the band members. It was like they weren't having fun at all yet, and the backing track failed a few times too, during the song. The overall sound was pretty bad too.
Second track, 'AM War', no change in attitude/joy either. The experimental and relative difficult structure/groove of both songs didn't help either. To be honest, those tracks are pretty cool on record, but as an opening to a live show they just didn't cut it for me.
All this time, there was a pretty disturbing hum noticeable in between songs, and in quiet parts. Imagining the band is hearing that all the time through their in-ears, they still did a pretty good job.
Highlights:
Themata
Simple Boy - with real xylophone! and of course the sludgy bass guitar.. damn.
Set Fire to the Hive - as far as aggression/energy go, this was THE highlight.
New Day - they closed with it, and it was just as beautiful as the previous gig I went to. Everyone was singing along, and this was really the magic moment of the show.
Disappointments (not quite the right word though.. maybe 'things that could've been better):
No 'Deadman' or 'Change'.
'Aeons' and 'Alpha Omega' were nice, comparable to the above two songs but not quite as impressive.
Lots of waiting time in between songs. The set didn't flow at all.
If I had to grade this, it's an 8, but a 6.5 for Karnivool. I'm sure the band learns from this instantly, and will change their game for the rest of the tour if that's possible. This was quite a bumpy ride for the band, but in the end everyone was having a great time. So that's that. If they come again, I will be in the audience rocking out and hopefully that show will be as professional as can be.
-
I just read on Karnivool's website that they're planning vinyl releases of their albums in April (so, about now), but I can't find any information more than that. the preorder-link leads to nothing, the official merch shop doesn't even mention there's vinyl, and the only informations I found on the internet are from last year or older. Does anybody know if and when these things are sold?
-
i saw the Vinyl releases announcement when it was made a few months ago and assumed I was going to get Themata, and then priced it out and I recall it being about $50 or $60 to import, and I kind of lost interest. If it receives a US release, I will definitely think about it.
-
That's a lot of money. And they said something about it being an exclusive australian release. I'm still curious if the vinyls do exist or not. I found no proof so far. But, like you said, when it's $50 or more including shipping and everything, I wouldn't buy it anyway.
-
Bump!
They're back in the studio presently. I never saw any sort of announcement of this, but I have it reliably from another forum (the head guy at Darkglass pedals is developing a pedal with Jon Stockman, and he said the prototype is currently being used in the sessions for their new album). Hopefully the new one is a little more focused...Asymmetry was good, buck it lacked momentum.
-
That's great news! I really hope they are going to do a European tour after it, Karnivool is probably the band I look most forward to seeing live.
Hopefully the new one is a little more focused...Asymmetry was good, buck it lacked momentum.
I agree, though this album has the most stand out songs for me (We Are, Aeons and Alpha Omega) the album doesn't flow as well as the previous two. Still an amazing album though.
-
Karnivool is amazing! I got into them around July and they're my favourite band right now! I can't wait to hear what's in store on the next album!
...Of course, we do have a potential preview of things to come:

So I've been aware of this band for quite a long time but never got around to listening. I heard Themata through the 'Discover Weekly' Spotify playlist and I loved it.
Am I right in thinking this band only have three full albums? Any recommendations on which to start with. I'm going to be on a huge Dear Hunter/Devin Townsend binge for the next few days, at least, so won't be checking out all three Karnivool albums.
Queue you guys :tup
-
Dammit, saw a post and thought there was news about the release for the next one!
There is technically a album (maybe an EP) preceding Themata, but it's pretty unremarkable form what I've read.
I would start with Sound Awake, which is pretty much a masterpiece.
-
I don't know if I'm alone in this, probably, but the "Set Fire to the Hive EP" consists of 4 songs. And they're my exact top 4 Karnivool songs. So as far as introducing people to the band goes, that's my perfect way to go. The EP is on spotify and contains the song you listened to (Themata), Set Fire to the Hive, Roquefort (With Empire Horns) (this is a song from their debut album re-recorded with a brass section from The Cat Empire) and Deadman.
If this seems like too much trouble, just start with their best album:
Sound Awake

Yea, sorry about that :blush
Cheers for that Train. That EP is only Ł1.99 on iTunes. I'll give it a listen later if I can drag myself away from The Dear Hunter :lol
-
Three of those four aren't may favorites, but Deadman is maybe the perfect song that sums up what the band is about.
-
bump.

a bit odd what's happened to their twitter page, name changed and most of their activity has vanished.
I hope this doesn't mean anything bad :-\

I think they just got hacked, and whoever deals with their social media is just asleep at the switch. Last I heard they were recording. I also know that their bass player (Jon Stockman) has a signature pedal (made by DarkGlass) about to debut at NAMM, and it's called the "Alfa Omega"...and he was using it on the new album.
-
Stockman signature pedal!

So has anyone seen any kind of update on what Karnivool is doing? During the summer I saw an update from Drew doing some recording for the new album, but I've seen nothing since. I can't wait for the new album, especially since I've basically listened to the four songs floating around on YouTube from live shows to death. Interesting to note, this is the first time they've broken their 4-year cycle. 1997-formation, 2001-Persona EP, 2005-Themata, 2009-Sound Awake, 2013-Assymetry, 2017-???. I was hoping they would follow but it's not out yet :lol

Indeed, where are these guys at now? I would love to see something new, especially with everything they've learned from Asymmetry. Which was good, but to my ears not as good as Sound Awake.
-
'Themata' is now available in streaming platforms. One of my favorite Alternative/Nu Metal albums ever released, if not my favorite. Nu Metal albums haven't aged very well for me, but this is one of the very few exceptions. Really shows they strived for a different sound since their beginning.
:metal
-
I wouldn't really consider it a nu-metal album, but I agree it's very great, and I've been Spotifying this a lot since it came back on Spotify!
-
I wouldn't consider it nu-metal either. I've had it uploaded to my Google Play music account for years, so I didn't even realize it wasn't actually on there. (It still isn't, but Google Play music is often forgotten for a while)
-
It definitely has some Nu-Metal influence carrying over from their earlier days, especially L1FEL1KE which was recorded in 2001.
They were going to do a mini anniversary tour for Sound Awake featuring the album in its entirety, but it got postponed due to the pandemic. Hopefully it won't have to be postponed again, I would like to see live footage of those shows.
They are still apparently working on album #4... I wonder if the reason it's taking so long is because it will be a double album? :o

Awesome video. Just love how Karnivool makes these kind of rhythms sound so groovy :metal

I LOVE the record and don't consider it nu-metal in the slightest.

Great video. Love the detail he explains everything with. Such killer complexity.

Great video! He pretty much put into words what I couldn't and more. Funny that the time signature is described as 27/4 which is ridonculous. I find it much easier to just split it into changing times than have a super long bar. :lol

it was pulled earlier, but now it's back. I guess it's an older tune they have played live, but now recorded and released.

Nice!!

I call shenanigans on a new album until I have it in my hands. And will it be any good? They’ve been “working” on this album for so long that whatever mojo they had would seem to be seriously dissipated at this point. I don’t entirely understand their inner band dynamics, but from what I’ve gleaned from Facebook and other places, it seems like Drew Goddard has been the main factor holding things up. Ian Kenny has been busy with Birds of Tokyo, and honestly, I’d imagine that Birds is way more lucrative financially at this point, since they work way more consistently and have a much wider audience than the Vool now.
-
LOVE Karnivool. I bought the Blu-ray of their covid livestream. It included the unaired version of one of their new songs and it was amazing.
I'm not sure why it takes these guys so long. Yes, other bands, etc., but are any of them the draw of Karnivool? Karnivool is an international band at this point. Is anything else they do at that level?
Fingers crossed the new record comes this year.
Their set opening for Porcupine Tree back on The Incident Tour in San Francisco was mind blowing.

Birds of Tokyo, of which Ian Kenny is the vocalist, is probably quite a bit more popular in Australia than Karnivool, and way more prolific. I think they've released 3 albums, 2 eps, 1 greatest hits collection, and numerous additional singles since 2013. They've had almost no traction in the US, though. I remember seeing them on Jimmy Kimmel about the time they released their single Lanterns, which was a huge hit pretty much every where else, but I don't think it led to a US tour or anything. It's weird too, because Lanterns did get radio play around the time of its release here in the US. Anyway, Birds is a chart-topping act in Australia and other places and Karnivool has largely been out of the public eye aside from a few tours.
-
Interesting. I'll check it out. Just a huge bummer on Karnivool not being able to get out there more.

Been hoping for a return visit to the U.S. since 2012 when I saw them open for Porcupine Tree in San Francisco. After 12 years, and touring the way it is, doubtful, at least in the U.S. Which sucks.
-
Seeing them live again at a festival this summer. The thing is that especially Sound Awake is so good they can still get away with just touring.
I also have that covid stream on blu-ray, I also watched it live when they aired it. Great performance with amazing sound quality.

Same. My fam and I are all fans. So we've watched it several times now. SO good.

We've got European dates announced as well I think.

I'll be at the Melbourne show on the 30th.

not new 'Vool, but a new track is coming with Ian Kenny guesting from the band Northlane.
