Title: The Noise Music Thread
Post by: Sigz on June 28, 2010, 07:13:33 PM
So my one of my friends at the radio station I used to work has a noise music show on Friday afternoons, except on the schedule it's listed as a smooth jazz show  :lol I just saw that there was an article in the newspaper about his show/noise music, which is here: https://www.independent.com/news/2010/jun/28/did-station-just-break/

Anyways, that inspired me to start this thread, so discuss noise music here. Merzbow of course is classic, and Continuum's second album is amazing. I also have this compilation album called Whole which has a shitload of different noise artists all contributing different tracks and parts of tracks, it's quite good. I believe it's actually free from the label, I'll see if I can find it.

edit: here it is: https://meatronic.com/release/MTR-015

Listening to the free album now...really good. Reminds of the some music I experimented with a few years ago.

Closest I've gotten to noise music has been with parts of Insurgentes, and that left an iffy taste in my mouth.  I checked out some noise stuff and its just not for me *shrug*

A friend of mine tried to get me into noise by telling me it was similar to minimalist music.
As it turns out, he's a lying bastard.

I really like what i've heard, though i haven't heard much.
The few things i know that would probably count as noise:
*Insurgentes (spread out on several songs)
*Molotov and Haze (Molotov and Corrosive)
*Ashes Against the Grain (The Grain)

Bass Communion's Molotov and Haze is great too.

I got into Merzbow a couple of months ago, but I rarely listen to him anymore, maybe it's not the right season now. I want to explore further though, so I'm listening to you link, sigz.

I looked up some Merzbow on youtube and it's pretty good. Any recommandations in terms of album? Apparently he did like 250 of those! :omg:

I quite enjoy Annhiloscillator and Liquid City.

Here's a question I can't seem to get a consensus on, because I know people who strongly hold each of these opinions;
Pat Metheny's "Zero Tolerance For Silence" album;
Some people I know claim that he made it to get out of a contract, and that it's intentionally bad as a middle finger to his old label. Other people I know consider it a great Noise album, and believe that that was his intention with it.

Any thoughts?

Never heard it. According to wiki, Metheny's statement is:
Quote
That rumor was started by a journalist who was seriously not listening to the album. All it would have taken was a quick phone call [to me] to find out that that wasn't the case. Besides, I would never do something like that. It isn't the way I operate, which I think has been pretty self-evident over the years. That record speaks for itself in its own musical terms. To me, it is a 2-D view of a world in which I am usually functioning in a more 3-D way. It is entirely flat music, and that was exactly what it was intended to be.

I'll give it a listen though, it sounds interesting.

Boris' Feedbacker is a great noise album, a 40minute noise track. Pretty much all of Boris' noise tracks are solid gold.

Yeah, I was just listening to the Boris/Merzbow version of that last night.

How is that version, I never listened to it. Merzbow must really add a whole different factor to it. You should check out some of Boris' other shit, their song Untitled from Smile is another heavy hitting noise track, same with Just Abondoned My-Self off Pink.

I got Pink a few months ago, I really like it. I don't have the original version of Feedbacker so I can't really compare the two. The version with Merzbow is quite good though, as are all the other songs they did.

I heard their cover of Flower Sun Rain and thought it was awesome, but I think I dig the Smile version better. I'm going to have to pick up that album at sometime though, well that and Sun Baked Snow Cave.

Oh man 'Blackout' by Boris hit me like a ton of bricks today.

Boris are so great I don't even know how to explain it. Flood is the most peaceful album ever, while Feedbacker is one of the most crazy. And yes, Blackout is a amazing song, such a great vibe to it, i don't even know how to describe it, almost doomy.

Found this album called Mechanical Sound Orchestra under the experimental clearance section at Amoeba Records today - there's a warning that reads "Due to extreme frequency and intential clipping, the sounds on the recording could damage stereo speakers if played too loudly - Please play this as loud as possible!"

I am very excite. :caffeine:

It was actually kinda disappointing. There was some interesting rhythmic stuff going on, but it was severely lacking in the 'abrasive ear bleeding noise' department.

I also got this on clearance for 2.99: https://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Guitar-21st-Century-v/dp/B001TJI6QQ

Some of it's like avant-garde acoustic type stuff, but some of the later tracks are really awesome ambient/noise stuff, all done with guitar.
