Anyone else familiar with this artist? I discovered him about 2 weeks ago and have barely listened to anything else since. The last time that happened was when I discovered Buckley quite some time ago, and he is now one of my favorite artists.
The guy who goes under the name 'The Tallest man on Earth' is Kristian Matsson from Sweden. The music is folk singer/songwriter-esque and very addicting. I couldn't stand his voice the first few listens but it really grows on you.
One of my favorites:

-
I've had his album Shallow Graves for a year or two now, really great stuff! Never did get round to checking out whether he had anymore material though.
-
'The Wild Hunt' came out this year, be sure to check it out.
-
I shall certainly do so! :D
-
I want more! It's the same as with Buckley. I fell in love with his music so quickly, but he had so little material :(.
-
FUCK. This was going to be my band name :censored :censored :censored
-
FUCK. This was going to be my band name :censored :censored :censored
:-X Too late!
-
So I actually listened to some of this and its pretty good.
-
This deserves a bump. If only because Harry confessed seeing this thread but not opening it.
Great music. He is already the #2 artist of my last 3 month thingie on last.fm - and I discovered his music 3/4 weeks ago.
-
BUMP
I just can't get enough of The Wild Hunt atm. This album is really close to perfect. I didn't even like it at first but now I'm listening to it like 4-5 times a day. Love is All is probably my favorite but there is no filler whatsoever it that record. His guitar playing, his voice, the songwriting... The man is a genius. I'll surely get his first CD and his EP that came out in 2010 in no time.
:hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
I might see him live in May, though I haven't actually heard the music yet. :P
I better get starting. :hat
-
Just like Voxyn in his OP, he's basically all I'm listening to at the minute, this is insane. It annoys me that some people dismiss him immediately because they find his voice annoying, as they're really missing out on who is fast becoming one of the best artists I've ever heard.
I think at the minute King of Spain and Into The Stream are my favourites, and The Dreamer is amazing too.
-
Good. This thread didn't deserve to die so fast.
-
What do you think of "Kids on the Run"? I think it's fantastic idea to end the album with a piano-driven piece a bit slower. Great, great song!
-
As I found out about this guy through Sputnik's top albums of 2010 list, I was already prepared to love Kids On The Run. They described the appeal of it perfectly, and it really does just seem to 'work' despite all of the out of tuneness and weariness you can hear in it. Love love love these albums. The EPs are also really good.
-
Kristian is amazing
-
The lyrics of "Into the stream" are sooo sad and haunting...
EDIT: btw, this guy is becoming one of my top 10 artists ever... I love both of his albums to death!
-
Check out the EPs! Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird has The Dreamer and Little River, two of my top 5 songs of his.
-
Will do! :tup
and man, this is a guy I really want to see live at a small bar or something. :tup
-
I really don't understand all the love for him.
-
I'm seeing him at Shepherd's Bush on May 19th, and cannot wait! ;D Me and my mate are gonna get there far too early and maintain our hold on the front row.
-
TWH is such a great album.
-
I really don't understand all the love for him.
Because you're a bad person.
-
I really don't understand all the love for him.
Keep listening maybe? I didn't really like him at first too...
-
I really don't understand all the love for him.
Are you kidding? He's The Tallest Man on Earth. That alone is really impressive.
-
I'm seeing him live in less then a month. :caffeine:
-
I'm seeing him live in less then a month. :caffeine:
Same :caffeine:.
-
Saw him the other night on Jools Holland. Thought he was pretty good, will have to check the guy out.
-
I'm seeing him live in less then a month. :caffeine:
Same :caffeine:.
Exactly a month. :caffeine:
-
So I actually listened to some of this and its pretty good.
I was intrigued by the title and this ended up happening.
-
Cheap plug: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/43075/The-Tallest-Man-on-Earth-Sometimes-The-Blues-Is-Just-A-Passing-Bird/
Anyone who hasn't checked out this EP yet must do so soon, I'd put it on a par with his full lengths if we disregard quantity.
-
Indeed. The Dreamer <3.
-
That, Little River and Like The Wheel probably all make my top 10. And Thrown Right At Me live with the duet is lovely.
-
I have all his EPs on the computer (haven't listened yet), they're also available in store here, just been too lazy to pick them up. :P
-
Gonna give this guy a try, haven't listened before..
-
I checked "Shallow Grave" out last night, i actually liked it alot more than i thought i would, great stuff :tup
-
Just came back after seeing this guy live, the show was AMAZING. :hefdaddy
Apart from the songs and the setlist being great, his talk between songs was both amusing and entertaining.
One particular funny moment was when one dude in the back shouted "DYLAN!", Kristian just told him to come up to the stage, which the guy did.
Kristian then said; "Dylan is not here dude. Dylan is old, and he's probably at home resting" (in Swedish but still), which made me giggle. :lol
Then near the end of the show, he made a reference to that moment by saying: "People shouting Dylan, what is this, the 60's?"
Pretty funny.
In the middle of the concert, Kristian sat down at the piano, and some dude shouted "KIDS ON THE RUN!", and Kristian replied: "You really think so? I don't."
He then played a NEW SONG, which he played on the piano, and it was simply fantastic.
He actually played Kids on the Run as the closer, but he played it on the banjo, so the new song was the only one he played on the piano.
He also had some help from the opening act, "Francis", a drummer and the bass-player who performed together with him for three songs, then I think it was their singer who sang a duet with him near the end, and I also think she was his gf. (though I might have misunderstood it)
Anyhow, setlist as I remember it:
*I Won't Be Found
*Pistol Dreams
*Shallow Grave
*Where Do My Bluebirds Fly
*The Gardener
*This Wind
*The Dreamer
*Thrown Right At Me (duet)
*NEW SONG
*Troubles Will Be Gone
*You're Going Back
*The Drying of the Lawns
*The King of Spain
*Love is All
*Kids on the Run (banjo)
*Thousand Ways
Can't remember the exact order, but I'm fairly sure he played these songs.
I can probably get back tomorrow or so with the 'correct' list in the right order.
Fantastic gig though, this guy just keeps growing for me. :hefdaddy
-
Sounds awesome :D. Now I'm even more excited to see him Wednesday :D.
-
*snip*
Awesome, sounds like a smashing good time!
...and I can see why he wouldn't want to be likened to Dylan often, most artists don't really like having another act branded on them. Good for him!
-
Yeah, a lot of acoustic folk singers probably get lumped in with/compared to Dylan. It's must be frustrating for them.
-
Nice that you had a great time! :tup I really want to see him live now...
-
I just love it how he handled that whole situation, when he called the guy up to the stage, I thought he would hit him with his guitar or something. :lol
But he was just like: "Sorry, but Dylan is not here" in a very calm tone.
-
Saw him yesterday, 'twas amazing.
-
MOAR info! :)
-
Not sure but I think the setlist was almost or even exactly the same as the one you posted.
I love the crowd interaction he had. He also said it was a very special day because the new Bon Iver leaked and he cried about how beautifull it was. And I think he was a bit suprised about the crowd. It's a fairly big and pretty beautiful venue and on top of that the crowd just couldn't stop cheering a couple of times. He had such a big smile on his face when the crowd was still applauding after 5 minutes, it was great to see.
-
Sounds great!
What did you think of the new song?
The songs he played with a band, and Kids on the Run on banjo?
-
New song was great and he played three songs with the band I think. The King of Spain was so awesome :hefdaddy. And King of Spain on banjo indeed :).
-
Sounds like it was very much like the show I saw, but it's not necessary to change concept between shows if it's working well. :tup
Personal highlight for me was probably Love Is All, which is my favorite from The Wild Hunt.
Though it's hard to pick.
-

Exact same for me last night, too. :lol
What a brilliant concert, though. King of Spain with the band was the highlight, and it was hilarious to hear the only words people knew in the verses when everyone yelled 'bar-celOOONAAA! pam-pLOOONAAA!' and then went quiet. :lol Then when everyone leaned back in unison to try and hit the final 'i wanna be THEEEEEEEEEE' it was great, Kristian was clearly loving it, too. I also thought the drums on The Dreamer worked really, really well, so I wouldn't mind him venturing into some more band-oriented stuff in the future.
He also said something offhandly when introducing the new song that got me excited, something like, 'well I've got so many new songs ready...' Did he say anything like that for you guys, or was it just me mishearing him?
-
He didn't say anything about new songs when I saw him, it was just like "So this is a new song", and everyone was like: :omg:
Seeing how productive he's been since the start of his career, I'd say we'll probably get something this year, an album or an EP. (hopefully the first)
-
I'm pretty sure he did say he had tons ready, so I'd hope so.
I seriously think King of Spain with the whole band is one of my top live music experiences ever, it's just such a perfect live song.
-
I don't understand the appeal of this guy at all. It's some harmless folk/country stuff, but nothing more. I can't stand his voice, and all of his songs I've listened to are fairly interchangeable. Lyrics are alright, though, I suppose.
There are just soooooo many better singer-songwriters out there--Sarah Fimm, Conor Oberst, Tori Amos--that accomplish what he can't.
-
I disagree completely with the two examples you listed as being better that I've heard enough of (Oberst and Amos), but each to their own I guess.
As for me, he's actually probably in my top 10 artists of all time now. Every single time I listen to his music I find some new emotion in it, and I've listened A LOT recently, without it getting boring at all.
-
I agree with the G-dawg.
-
This guy better than Conor and Tori?
:rollin :rollin
-
Ravenheart, i got one word for you:
Subjectivity
Deal with it.

Fixed.
Ravenheart, i got one word for you:
Subjectivity
Deal with it.
I can deal with it just fine. I'm expressing my opinion, like I always do, just like everyone else in this thread.
Odd how members on this forum do that exact same thing in the exact same way all the time, but the moment I do it, I get attacked.
-
I'm not attacking you, I can see the argument a bit for Oberst and definitely for Amos being better, but I just find this guy's music speaks to me way more maaaaaan.
Seriously though, he and Dylan are the only two singer-songwriters, even though I love a lot of others, that really elicit strong emotions in me when I listen. Hell, Where I Thought I Met The Angels might well be my favourite song ever.
-
Nah, I know you weren't. I didn't mean you.
-
I don't think you can use yourself as a benchmark of what is good or not, if that makes any sense. Even though you don't like the same things as other people, you still have to respect their opinion, and don't question them.
anyway, i'm done arse-talking, good night
-
Seriously though Zander, I'm actually pretty surprised that TMOE isn't doing it for you, he seems right up your alley. I guess if you don't like his voice though, it's kind of an unchangeable deal breaker.
-
WTF he's all kind of awesome!! :tdwn
-
I like to pride myself on the fact that I introduced him to 80% of you nubs.
-
I love this guy, his music is simply fantastic, and I just love it how he makes 'simple' music with so much variety, really takes creativity.
Seeing Zander bashing him completely kinda made me loose faith in humanity. :'(

This exactly.

No. This guy is fantastic as well.

Except he isn't.

His voice is the best part about his music, nubs.

This is funny because I just sampled that link in the OP and almost immediately shut it off once he started singing.
Ugh.
-
Oh, you...
-
Except his voice is really awesome. Listen again.
-
There's nothing wrong with his voice, his songs are just boring.
-
Noooooooo way man. Love is All, The King of Spain, Kids on the Run.... come on, you can't tell me those are boring.
-
The King of Spain is the song I was thinking of when I said he's boring.
-
I can't distinguish between any of the songs I've heard by him.
-
Oh well. The Wild Hunt is an incredible album. I'll leave it at that.
-
There's nothing wrong with his voice, his songs are just boring.
Everything is wrong with his voice. It's like one of those stereotypical redneck country singers. A higher pitched Huckleberry Hound singing "Oh my darling Clementine".
-
Oh lawdy

Voice has a twang? MUST BE REDNECK COUNTRY MUSIC

How very subjective of you.

Hey Zook, I think the number is up to 5550 now.

Hey Zook, I think the number is up to 5550 now.
Hey letters, shut your face.
Zook, Ryan and Zander, I've had quite enough of your nonsense filling up the forum. Just leave each other alone, ok?
-
just got into them. good to see that DT fans are so eclectic ;D
-
Gawd, this thread has had so much fail lately.
Zander should be perm banned from this thread.
-
I have to say, reading back over this thread is making me laugh at some people's opinions on the guy. I know music is subjective (although we all know that I secretly don't :lol) but some of you guys be trippin'.
-
music is subjective
YOU *pokes* don't get to say that music is subjective
:heart
-
Well yeah, the amount of fail by Zander in this thread is just overwhelming. ;)
-
Bump..................the gardener just blew my mind
-
I :heart The Tallest Man on Earth.

Bump because he really is in my top 10 (at least) favourite artists of all time, fo' sho' now.

-
The Wild Hunt is such a great album. :hefdaddy
Y U NO MENTION SHALLOW GRAVE? :o
-
Shallow Grave has certainly grown on me a lot more than The Wild Hunt has. Although I think I still prefer The Wild Hunt as I loved it instantly, they're both amazing.
-
The Wild Hunt is such a great album. :hefdaddy
Y U NO MENTION SHALLOW GRAVE? :o
It's good but The Wild Hunt is on another level. Plus, the sound quality of Shallow Grave is horrible.
-
They're equal for me.
If I had a gun to my had and had to pick one, I'd most likely go for The Wild Hunt.
Not necessarily better, but I have very fond memories of it, seeing as it was the first album by him I heard, and it has my favorite song of his, Love is All.
-
I think song for song, Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird is his most consistently perfect release. But it's only an EP! :sadpanda:
Also, y'all should check out the Daytrotter Sessions versions of Shallow Grave and I Won't Be Found, I prefer them to the originals. And Where I Thought I Met The Angels, his best song imo. And In The Pockets. And Weather of a Killing Kind!
I love this man.
-
Yeah, this guy is pretty awesome. Among my very favorite artists.
-
Possibly the best musician, in terms of raw songwriting ability in every single song, since Dylan imo.
-
I've been listening to his music almost non-stop since a week or two. So amazing.
-
The Wild Hunt is a masterpiece.
-
The Wild Hunt is a masterpiece.
It really is.
-
I keep listening to it every day, almost. The songwriting is just absolutely beautiful, and Burden of Tomorrow, Love is All, and King of Spain are some of the best songs I've ever heard. The Dreamer from the EP is amazing, too.
-
He's really due for some new material now, maybe in 2012? :)
-
I can only hope.
-
Looking at the pace he's had before, I'm very hopeful about a 2012 album.
And also, with the "type" of music he plays, it's a good thing because writing an album probably won't take as long time as it would for a full time band, and I'm certain that he already has a couple of tracks probably, so when he decided to record a new album, I don't think it will take much time. :)
-
That's true. He probably writes a lot of his songs while touring.
-
He played some new songs when I saw him earlier this year so 2012 sounds realistic.
Also, see him live if you can - it's fantastic.
-
Already seen him live, he was fantastic indeed!
-
Listened to The Wild Hunt and enjoyed it very much. Gonna give it a couple of more spins tomorrow.
What should I listen to next?
-
Shallow Grave, his other album. And his EP Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird.
-

The first EP is also very good though!
-
Shallow Grave, his other album. And his EP Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird.

Really? I think that's probably my least favourite thing he's done! The second EP is probably the most condensed bit of brilliance he's released, imo.
-
Well, I think the first EP is really good, but it's also my least favorite release by him.
He has a very high lowpoint though, so it's still worth checking out. :P
-
Oh I see what you mean, sorry. Yeah it is still very good, better than most other modern folk artists' stuff for sure. I still stand by my claim that he's the most consistent artist since Dylan/Tool, and much more prolific than the latter to boot.
-
Listening now. And I get why people would associated him with Dylan. Is he as witty lyrically as Bob is? I would think that'd be a compliment.
I'll check out more of his stuff. King of Spain was extremely catchy. Swedes have a knack for catchiness, it seems.
-
Listened to The Wild Hunt and enjoyed it very much. Gonna give it a couple of more spins tomorrow.
What should I listen to next?
I'm new to him, but I've really like The Gardener.
@OP, thank you very much for the thread. I know I never would have heard of this guy on my own. :tup
-

I wanna see him live! He's not touring right now though is he :-\

-
just got sometimes the blues is just a passing bird EP and "the dreamer" OMG!!!! :heart :hefdaddy
Oooooh boy, that whole EP is stunning, that track in particular. Like The Wheel has grown to be my overall favourite though!
-
Burden Of Tomorrow is too good. The melody, the lyrics.. wow.
-
just got sometimes the blues is just a passing bird EP and "the dreamer" OMG!!!! :heart :hefdaddy
I've neglected that one for some time. Thought it pretty much just contained tracks from Shallow Grave.
-

I've neglected that one for some time. Thought it pretty much just contained tracks from Shallow Grave.
What??
-
Maybe he has it confused with the first EP. ;)
-
Little River is also amazing.
-
Yeah, the Dreamer is utterly fantastic. The EP is great.
-

I've neglected that one for some time. Thought it pretty much just contained tracks from Shallow Grave.
What??
Well...what I said pretty much :lol
-
Why would it contain tracks from Shallow Grave? It was released after The Wild Hunt...
Pretty sure you're confusing it with his first EP, which is self-titled. (like Zantera already said :) )
-
Yeah, I know I say this a lot, but Sometimes The Blues... is actually probably his strongest release, in terms of every single moment being perfect, for me. I also prefer his slightly less nasal singing voice on it compared to The Wild Hunt, and the overall mellower vibe.
Also, plug for my cover of 'Into The Stream,' plox check it out: https://soundcloud.com/marvellousg93/into-the-stream-cover
-
He's performing on a Swedish TV-show tomorrow, not live or anything since it's pre-recorded.
And it wont be his own songs but a few cover-songs instead, still I am excited to see him. :)
Also, a new album should probably come out this year, though I've heard little to nothing about it. Oh well, gotta have high hopes!
-
The Gardener is still my favorite from him at the moment.
-

Really excited. He's an amazing artist, and the only reason he isn't higher among my favorites is because he has only released 2 albums and 2 EP's so far. But seeing as both Shallow Grave and The Wild Hunt are amazing, I expect nothing less from this album, and it's one of the big highlights of the summer for sure.
Also cool that the title-track is the one he played during 2011, I'm excited to see how the studio version sounds in comparison. :)
-
Just got The Wild Hunt. I wasn't as impressed as I was with Shallow Grave on the first listen, but after a few spins it's definitely great. So far I absolutely love Burden of Tomorrow and Kids on the Run.
-
The new single is lovely. :)
Much more polished than all his previous work but I like it.
-
It's lovely indeed.

NEW SINGLE??!

You've stumbled upon a door where your mind is the key. There are none who will lend you guidance; these trials are yours to conquer alone. Entering here will take more than mere logic and strategy, but the criteria are just as hidden as what they reveal. Find yourself, and you will find the very thing hidden behind this page. Beyond here is something like a utopia -

Wow, what a fantastic song. Everything I've heard from this has been great so far.

-
The title track is sooooooooooooooo good
-
This is beautiful.
-
Man, is that LP back catalog tempting...maybe if I keep working overtime.
-
The title track is sooooooooooooooo good
Yeah, the title track is definitely my favorite. It's absolutely amazing, definitely among the best songs he's ever done.
-
Album of the year so far, by far.
-
Just finished listening to it.
It's nice but right now I prefer The Wild Hunt by quite a bit.
-
I also still think I prefer The Wild Hunt. You have good opinions Harry.
-
I had to squint my eyes at that post to make sure I was actually seeing what I thought I was seeing.
It is, in fact, a compliment. Holy shit.
-
I think this might well be his best personally, but time will tell.
-
I'm listening to it for the first time right now, initial reaction for this one is much better then The Wild Hunt, which took some spins before it really clicked. (which I'm expecting this one to do as well)
Possible AOTY, but I won't call it out until I've heard it more, or heard it in full at least. :lol
-
I had to squint my eyes at that post to make sure I was actually seeing what I thought I was seeing.
It is, in fact, a compliment. Holy shit.
Shocking I know.
-
I'm going to be attending a Tallest Man On Earth concert this summer. I've been surprised at how popular he is around these parts. Personally, I don't get it. Now to be fair, I haven't listened all that much.
-
Listen to The Wild Hunt. Repeatedly. One of my favorite albums ever, it's shot up in my rankings in the past few months.
There's No Leaving Now is really fantastic, though, all I've been listening to the past few days. There's definitely more innovation and unique sounds on this album compared to the previous two, and that makes it all sound fresh. Everything's still beautifully done, too, so honestly I'm incredibly impressed with this release.
-
There's No Leaving Now is possibly his best song. It's early to say, because Love Is All is still very much up there (and other songs as well), but man.. There's No Leaving Now just blew me away.
-
Yup, what a good song. I'm listening right now.
-
So I've listened to The Wild Hunt a couple times now. I'm sure it will grow on me more, but as of right now I would say its solid. It's astonishing how much this guy reminds me of Dylan, both his voice and his lyrical capabilities.

Little Brother and On Every Page are quite beautiful songs. I'm not sold on the rest of the album yet (or the rest of his material) but I'll give it time.
Revelation Blues is very nice too.

The chorus of Bright Lanterns genuinely has the best lyrics I've heard in anything since 60s era Dylan. Genuinely.
-
I just recently got The Wild Hunt. It's AWESOME!!!
-
There's No Leaving Now is my first experience of this guy. It is most good.
-
New album is dull.

New album is dull.
LOL
not at all

I'd say the new is his best one yet.
-
Just listening to the new one for the first time now, so I guess it's way too early for me to say if I think something off of this album is my favorite. As it stands, I think Burden of Tomorrow is number 1 for me.

Seeing him live in February, should be a great one. :)

He is great live :tup

Check 25:55 (and a bit onwards) of that video. I wish more artsist would so this. I remember at Werchter 3 years ago I think Mogwai was there and they did the same thing. Like "please don't do that anymore" and restarted their song.

I saw him live back in 2011, but the seats are much better now. Last time I had to stand behind some tall dudes, but this time it's all seated, so should be nice. :)
