Title: The Official Rhapsody Of Fire Thread!!
Post by: metal_freak on June 17, 2010, 08:17:42 AM
hey guy's, well i was wondering if you guy's are listening to this awesome band!!! well I am and that's how I discovered metal with the album "Dawn Of Victory" i think i was ten years old (yup a ten year old headbanger :metal ).. and now I'm still listening to them=)!!..

they make cheesy music but there orchestrations especially on Symphony Of Enchanted Lands are breathtaking and since that album I'm a freak about medieval/baroque/film score music :metal

recently they have released a new album "Frozen Tears Of Angels" and i have to say the best album since Power Of The Dragonflame and Dawn Of Victory.. Turilli show's us his beastly solo's!!!

so what do you think of this band and the new album!!!

This band has certainly had its share of let downs in terms of unoriginality and repetitiveness, but Frozen Tears of Angels is absolutely amazing.  I was afraid Turilli had lost his touch, especially considering some of that nonsense psuedo-techno solo work he has done recently.  This album has definitely reignited my flame for Rhapsody (not that I ever truly lost it).

*Grabs broadswords*

IN THE NAME OF HOLY THUNDERFORCE!

I've been a Rhapsody fan since 8th grade, back when I discovered power metal and thought it was the coolest thing EVER! (fuck yeah awkward early teen years)

Favourite album is their debut, Legendary Tales followed by Dawn of Victory. Haven't heard their last two albums, but I might get around to them sooner or later.

I own all their albums and have been listening to them for 11 years, so I better check in.  They've come a long way since their first two albums, and for the most part have improved with each album.

Also, they are pretty much the reason we have Christopher Lee in metal now, so that just adds to their legend.

My favorite power metal band.  I've got everything up through Power of The Dragonflame/Rain of A Thousand Flames.

They catch a bad rap for their super-cheesy lyrics, but the music itself is stellar.

I forget, is Rhapsody of Fire the band the keyboardist split off to do or the band Luca Turilli split off to do?

Loved these guys up to The Dark Secret, everything after, especially Triumph and Agony, bored me senseless.

Absolutely love Dawn Of Veektoree but when things got a bit more serious (as if it could, really!) it lost me a bit.
I enjoy Luca's solo stuff. Great guitarist- he never disappoints there.

I've been a fan of Rhapsody/Rhapsody Of Fire since Symphony Of Enchanted Lands came out.  I feel like there really is no other band like them.  Sure there are plenty of symphonic power metal bands but I feel ROF takes it to another level.  Many of the other bands people have tried to introduce me to, claiming they sound a lot like ROF, have wound up being a disappointment.  I'd love to find other bands who sound like them.

Just listened to the whole album.

After hearing the single a couple of weeks ago, I was pretty disappointed, because the lack of Luca Turilli's influence was obvious.
Luckily the rest of the album is a bit better, but that absence is still very obvious. It doesn't sound much like Rhapsody. That in itself isn't all bad, but it's definitely lacking.
There's still a lot of the usual fast single note riffing that I expect from Rhapsody, but it's not as memorable. I'm not used to hearing standard metal riffing! After the first listen, nothing sticks in my head, except for the Sea of Fate section in Angel of Light (which I hope was intentional!). The vocal melodies aren't as strong, and the riffing is plain. The guitarist is also a little sloppy. He's not bad, but the faster sweeping arpeggios often sound like he's at the very edge of his capabilities.

Based on their first albums since the split, I have to give the first round victory easily to Luca Turilli here.

I never really could get into Rhapsody to be honest.  I like Fabio though so I gave the track a listen.  Pretty standard power metal affair and definitely not as bombastic and layered as older Rhapsody.  Not bad though.

That doesn't leave me with much hope.  I love the older Rhapsody material with the amazingly and beautifully orchestrated sound.

I'd heard this was less Dawn of Victory and more Triumph and Agony, so I'll give it a pass. Looks like Luca's Rhapsody wins this battle.

BUMP because Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness just came up on shuffle and I was like OMFG :metal :metal :metal. I can't stand the long narration section, but I cut it out on my version, so I now have 12 minutes of pure awesomeness. I think it's the only Rhapsody song where all three solos have a distinct style and are all awesome.

Listening to Power of the Dragonflame again now. Fucking awesome album. Knightrider of Doom fucking slays. DAT INTRO RIFF

Saruman now has a mind of metal.

Rhapsody of Fire had an big streak of amazing albums (Symphony of Enchanted Lands/Dawn of Victory/Rain of a Thousand Flames/Power of the Dragonflame) among others and are, still, a classic reference of symphonic power metal. There's no band in the genre that comes close to the majestic sound of these guys.

Also, was I the only one that really liked Dark Wings of Steel? Yeah, you feel that Luca's gone, and it's different from the other Rhapsody (of Fire) stuff, but it thoroughly brilliant anyway, in my opinion. Angel of Light is one of my favourite Rhapsody tunes ever.

I used to listen to alot of Rhapsody. The first album I heard was Legendary Tales followed by Symphony of Enchanted Lands. I think Land Of Immortals was the first song. Never heard anything as epic and pompous at that point. After SoEL part II I kind of lost interest in the band and power metal in general.

Top 3
Dawn Of Victory
Symphony of Enchanted Lands II
Power of the Dragonflame

New song is slightly better than what I remember of the last album, but still pretty bland without Luca. The vocals are sounding a bit strained too, and I don't like the growly-ness.

Luca Turilli's first album since the split has been the only one I've liked so far. Yet another band split that has resulted in diminished results from both sides.

I found the last album very forgettable generic power metal without Luca Turilli's distinct style. I didn't dislike it, but I can't remember a thing about it at all.
The new song is an improvement in sounding more like Rhapsody, but some of the melodies are directly out of another Rhapsody song.

I don't look for originality in my power metal anymore.

I've never looked for originality in power metal. :lol I just found the similarity obvious.

I do expect this album will be an improvement over the previous one though, so hopefully I'll be able to get into it.

Been a fan since pretty much day one.
Pretty much love nearly everything that they have done, though not every album has been brilliant.
The only one I don't have it the last one, didn't get good reviews so I passed.

I love both LTR album's they are killer and the one that came out this year, is perhaps one of his best ever albums IMO.

I don't care if they rip themselves off, as long as they do it well, with lots of fast drums and cheesy lyrics.

I loved Ascending To Infinity as much as anything else they've done, but the second one lost me with the scifi diarrhea lyrics and over the top pretentiousness even for Rhapsody. :lol

Post by: BlobVanDam on November 23, 2015, 11:47:10 PM
Lyrics aren't important to me, but there was that one part of the first single that jumped out so much with random scifi words put together and it was a little distracting. I prefer my power metal lyrics firmly rooted in medieval times. :lol

Completely forgettable for me. ROF sound like any other power metal band now, and the album is so samey. The only track I recall not sounding exactly like the rest was the bonus track. Luca Turilli was definitely what gave them their unique sound, but even his most recent one wasn't that good.

Songs like the title track and A Voice in the Cold Wind to me sound 100% Rhapsody even through the different sounds between them. I liked Prometheus as well. Maybe they sound like other power metal bands because their style has carried on to many modern bands within the genre.

Fabio Lione is out of RoF. They'd become generic sounding without Luca Turilli, and now without even the distinctive voice of Fabio, they're completely done as far as I'm concerned. Despite really loving the first Turilli's Rhapsody album, both sides have become disappointing since the split now for me.

I didn't like the last Luca Turilli one much, but Ascending To Infinity was as great as anything RoF did. Hopefully Prometheus was just a one-off miss for me. I barely even listened to the two RoF albums without him. They were incredibly blandtacular. You're not missing much imo.

I am fine with Fabio focusing on Angra and Vision Divine. And I am also fine with Luca's Rhapsody being a seperate (and better) entity, though I can only handle so much of his music in one go. I have serious doubts this Rhapsody of Fire will remain relevant in the power metal scene though.

I honestly gave up on the band an album or two before Luca even quit.

Either way, band has vowed to continue. Pretty sad to see them fade away rather than go out triumphantly by choice a while ago.

Thanks, I wasn't sure, as I'm not very familiar with the two RoF albums without Luca. I only ever listened to them once or twice.
Fabio is starting to show his age, and is sounding a little rough now, so this new guy probably does manage it better. You wouldn't want to get a new singer who already couldn't pull off the old material well.

I am so confused.
Title: Re: The Official Rhapsody Of Fire Thread!!
Post by: MirrorMask on November 21, 2016, 12:27:41 PM
Yeah, but it's a one time thing.

Rhapsody of Fire now has a new singer, Giacomo Voli, and the founding member Alex Staropoli.
Luca Turilli's Rhapsody is Turilli's version of Rhapsody, and he has Alessandro Conti as singer.

While maintaining the lineup and style of the band, Luca Turilli's Rhapsody will welcome aboard Fabio Lione for one last tour, before continuing with Alessandro Conti.

It's like the Helloween tour, Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske are back for a tour but when all it's said and done Deris will remain as the sole singer of the band, and Weikath / Gerstner as the two guitarists.

(I agree it's confusing, it took me a while to realize it was not a permanent thing)
Title: Re: The Official Rhapsody Of Fire Thread!!
Post by: Adami on November 21, 2016, 12:29:21 PM
Oh I got that it wasn't permanent. Calling it a farewell tour was what threw me off.

So it's a one time thing and then they'll all continue on with business as usual. Makes more sense. Thanks!

Luca Turilli and Fabio Lione got away from him in a couple of years, teaming up together immediately after that. If there was ever any dirty laundry it hasn't been aired in public, but I'm starting to think that this is not a coincidence...

So they just released a best of album (of early material), with the twist that it are basically rerecordings (covers might be a better term in this context given the amount of original members). Here is the thing, I actually really dig it. People seem to be trashing it that it isn't Fabione and a mere cover band. And well, yes, he isn't Fabione but I really like his voice and am enjoying this release very much. Not a b-version of Fabione but a talented dude that sounds different enough.

Here is the official youtube playlist (contains some of the rerecordings): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PidC0IgacUk&index=2&list=PLAXgM0mQib5RaxH7nSnOSS7yPgrxQrPIw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PidC0IgacUk&index=2&list=PLAXgM0mQib5RaxH7nSnOSS7yPgrxQrPIw)

Edit: made a mistake initially, playlist only has a couple of the rerecordings.

Looking forward to their eventual new album.

Pretty good but I hate the last high note he sings, sounds off key. Overall the production sounds a bit dry, especially on When Demons Awake. Actually it made me realise how much I love Power Of The Dragonflame, haven't listened to that album in years.  :tup

That was the album that got me hooked big time with Rhapsody back then. SO FRIGGN' GOOD AND CHEESY.

I get the whole re-recording thing, but I don't think it was necessary. Most of Rhapsody's material sounds good as it is.
Yeah, I like it but this is pretty much unnecessary.  And the new Wings of Destiny takes some getting used to with Virgin actually being pronounced as Virgin, not Veegin.  That's not a slam on Leone, he's a great singer.  But I've sung along to Veegin so many times now this sounds kind of funny  :rollin

Bumping this thread, just got the re-issues of Luca Turilli's first 2 solo albums, which I always thought were underrated.
Both are great albums, slightly less cheese and certainly less bombastic than Rhapsody and also of course a different singer, with no accent.

Funny you say that, because I think they're actually cheesier and (at times) just as bombastic as Rhapsody. Great stuff all around though. I love Olaf Hayer's voice.

There's a song called Ancient Forest of Elves.

I love his albums (minus the third one) but they are pure cheese.

Thanks for reminding me... Dragonforce ripped off Ancient Forest of Elves' verse vocal melody for its verse melody in The Last Journey Home.

From the first notes from the debut Rhapsody album back in 1997 I was in love.
I love the cheese fest and all the over the top song titles and lyrics.

The only huge criticism I have for them is their original narrator(s) before Sir Christopher Lee. The main guy was just.....painful.

I couldn't bother with the rest, but Kings of the Nordic Twilight is actually a great album for the genre, full of great and memorable songs. It goes by the book, sure, with all the mandatory kind of songs - the fast opener, the catchy tune, the mid.-tempo, the unforgettable single, the ballad and the big epic, but it works damn fine. And Olaf Hayer is indeed a kickass singer.

Yeah they struck gold when they got CL, I wonder how they got him and how much he cost?

NEW ALBUM CONFIRMED!!

Tracklist and art to come soon but next year we'll be getting, finally, the first chapter in a brand new Rhapsody saga. I was praying they'd do this after 2 standalone albums.

"The Eighth Mountain" will be the beginning of The Nephilim's Empire Saga and it comes out on February 22nd.

Saw it yesterday... geez, a final tour together was nice, but this new band is ridiculous. Sure, they have to follow their muse, if that's what they want to do, of course it's up to them, but is this now the FOURTH incarnation of Rhapsody? Rhapsody, then Rhapsody of Fire, then Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, then Fabio Lione leaves but he goes to form a band with Turilli which left too and aaaah I already have a headache  :lol

I might be the biggest Rhapsody fan around these parts and I think this album blows chunks. It's put a real damper on my day because I've been anticipating this album for years and it's a hot mess. Glad you're digging it though, gaz.

The upcoming Turilli/Lione CD should be a lot better.  Turilli is the much better songwriter than Staropoli.

big boy bump

Thought I'd rank the Rhapsody albums for fun. Now the first 5 albums (not counting Rain of a Thousand Flames) are 5 of my favorite albums of all time so the ranking doesn't really matter there, but generally this is how I feel about them. Although some days I feel like I love POTD most, or DOV, etc... Triumph or Agony is pretty much in that category too, except it's never been #1.

1. Legendary Tales
2. Symphony of Enchanted Lands
3. Symphony of Enchanted Lands II
4. Dawn of Victory
5. Power of the Dragonflame
6. Triumph or Agony
7. Into the Legend
8. The Frozen Tears of Angels
9. Rain of a Thousand Flames
10. From Chaos To Eternity
11. Dark Wings of Steel
12. The Cold Embrace of Fear
13. The Eighth Mountain
14. Legendary Years
