So basically what was the first album to come out once you became a fan?
For me it was Systematic Chaos, I first heard them right after Octavarium came out but didn't get really into them until summer/fall of 06. I was really excited, I couldn't resist the leak, but I went and bought the special edition the day it came out. It was an awesome feeling to buy a brand new DT release because I was obsessed by that time.
Its actually good that it was Systematic Chaos because it probably makes me like the album better than I would otherwise. I loved ITPOE right away, liked Constant Motion and The Ministry of Lost Souls a lot. My opinion on the album hasn't changed much really.
It is bad in the sense that I just missed the (what seemed to be) amazing Octavarium tour, but oh well.

Train of Thought. I joined the boards a few months before its release so I remember getting excited along with everyone else. It kicked my ass on first listen because I didn't expect it to be that heavy. It's weird to think how much I spun that album way back then but now it's my second to least favorite.

Octavarium.
I was shocked at how fresh the album sounded.

In a sense, Octavarium would be that album for me, but I was so casual a fan that I got Octavarium way later because I didn't know about it. Once I did I bought it, and it took a while to grow.
I would consider SC the first DT album I truly anticipated. I loved it at first, but it got stale really fast. And to think, TMOLS was my favorite upon first listen. Now I really do not like the song at all.

Train of Thought was the first new release I experienced, and I was really disappointed. I didn't like the new "heavy" approach, and I thought the instrumental sections were absurdly drawn out. I've come to like it more since the initial release, but it still marks the beginning of a huge decline in the quality of DT's music, in my opinion.

Octavarium, I became a fan around the time of Live at Budokan's release and actually was disappointed with it. After hearing ToT, and being in a metal binge at the time, I thought this was gonna be just like ToT. Of course my opinion of it has change over the years, but it's still on the bottom tier of DT albums for me.

I'm with the OP on this one. The release of Systematic Chaos was my introduction to DT, and I probably wouldn't like it as much if that weren't the case.

SFAM. Although the first song I heard was Metropolis.
I just remember being blown away by the music and hating the vocals. Luckily that last part changed quickly.

Systematic chaos, it was in the paper, and it said like "Tomorrow dream theater releases a new album" I was ike... :O :O Wow! :D and then I heard it and my first thought was..hmmm, cool, and then it grew on me and now I think it's definetely oneof thir best albums

I was pumped for the follow-up to I&W, as that was my favorite album at the time and my musical tastes were changing toward that style of prog-metal-whatever you classify it as. I thought it was great, though it took a few more listens than I&W to really get in to. It never really surpassed I&W as my favorite album, though it was a solid second.
Since then, some new albums I loved right away, some took a few listens to fully appreciate, a couple had a drop off after a year or two, a couple I liked for what they were. The only new album I considered a major letdown when I bought it was FII.

I became a fan after Constant Motion came out on Rock Band, so the first album that came out for me was Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

BC&SL I suppose, although that was a while after I'd started listening. What's weird is that I only got a few albums at first, then right as BC&SL was coming out I finished my collection so I was in the midst of loads of different DT time periods, which is objectively a terrible idea but was pretty cool.

I became a fan right after SC came out. I didn't know the band, so when I checked them out I was blown away. I acquired their discography quite fast, so I was very familiar with all their stuff when BCSL came out.
I thought it was a very good album. It fastly became my 4th favorite album and now it's probably my 5th or 6th favorite.

Black Clouds & Silver Linings and I loved it right from the start. I picked it up from Best Buy the day it came out and poped it into my car's CD player so I could listen to it a bit before I listen to the whole thing at home. A Nightmare to Remember kicked in and I was :letam: :2metal: :metal the whole way home.

I was a casual fan from around early 08 and really got into DT at the beginning of 09. I was very excited when BC&SL was released and I loved it right away. TCOT quickly became my favorite DT song and was only recently dethroned by Learning to Live.:D BC&SL is now my 4th favorite DT album behind I&W, Awake, and SDOIT.

VERY disappointed. It was my least favorite for awhile, but is now up above Systematic Chaos, Octavarium, and Falling Into Infinity.

Awake.
6:00 sounded kinda weird at the beginning, but the album grew on me fast and I thought it was an epic follow up to I&W.

Falling Into Infinity.
I became a fan in 1995, upon hearing Awake, and I quickly picked up and loved both I&W and ACOS. Then I had to wait 2 years before getting a fresh record. I absolutely was pleased with FII upon its release. A friend of mine and I bought it the day it was released. I remember we did think "New Millenium" was a bit odd at first, but it subsequently rocked us at the instrumental break and with the outro riff @ 7:19. Once we got to "Peruvian Skies," I was completely sold :metal
It's weird because I don't share a lot of the low opinions many fans have towards songs like "Burning My Soul" and, particularly, "You Not Me." I still think part of it is because I liked those songs before I knew about the turmoil surrounding the writing/recording of the album. Likewise, I didn't know about the demos at the time, either. Therefore, I'm one who prefers the record as it is; the songs on the demos might be great, but that's not the FII I grew up with. So I think there's a definite emotional attachment, too.

Black Clouds was the first album release, Chaos in Motion the first release of any kind.
By that time, I had become a significant DT fan, so its not as if I was stunned by the sound of the album, but I remember when A Rite of Passage first came out as a video, and I was pretty pumped.
Then, sitting in my living room, listening to BCSL with Global Laziness, and just rocking out.

I had been a fan for 3 years by the time IaW was released. So when their "new" album came out, I was really looking forward to buying it and hearing it. Imagine my SHOCK when this new album sounded NOTHING like the album I had grown to love for the last 3 years. I knew Charlie was gone, but it wasn't just the voice, but everything sounded completely different from what I was used to. Obviously, I got used to their "new" sound, but it did take some time.

The first song I heard from DT where Overture 1928/Strange dejavu, I was blown away, later that year i bought I&W(When i heard the intro from Metropolis i was like "OMG it soundz like the overturrree omgzzzz lol) and Awake at the same time and i fell in love with the band.
The first new release was Octavarium, and my reaction was kind of: "first and last track are amazing the rest it's pretty meh" and i still think the same.

I became a fan in 2007 right after SC was released, I remember having Forsaken as my favourite track off it. I thought SC was great until I discovered their other albums, and now it's near the bottom of their album ranking for me. Although I had bought I&W and Awake a few years earlier I wasn't a fan yet. So my first DT release since becoming a fan was actually Black Clouds (not counting live DVD's and such).

I first heard DT in 2002, Once in a LIVEtime but didn't really become a real fan til around 2007 after Systematic Chaos, although I never bought the record, I was too busy delving into the back catalogue. So BC&SL was the first album release. I was pretty underwhelmed by it after only just discovering Images and Words, Awake, SDOIT etc etc. but I've grown to love it.

Images and Words was my first album from DT, and probably my introduction to prog. I was floored by the tightness of the band, the variety in songs, the guitar solos, the vocals and just how much the album breathed, great production.

I & W. I heard Pull Me Under on he radio and I went out that day and bought it. It was love at first sight. ;D

I think I started listening a few months before Live at Budokan, but my first hotly anticipated release was Octavarium. I lived, breathed and - well, shat! - Octavarium for all the months leading up to its release, and then when I finally listened to it I splurged everywhere. One of the strangest albums in their discography, with its negative-tracks and the immediate, almost poppy mood, but it's become my favourite. In fact, it did the second I started up TROAE.
The Root of All Evil and Octavarium, between them, are a good sample of my entire music taste. Variously catchy and haunting and straight-forward and rocky and metallic and soaring and exhilarating and complicated and soulful and all of these wonderful things at the same time. If someone asked me to condense my tastes in music into thirty minutes-ish, I'd plop those two on a disc and be done with it. They've got everything that I love in microcosm.

It seemed that DT were changing their winning formula and we hated it. Personally, I had become a big Kevin Moore fan and had learned "Space-Dye Vest" and "Wait for Sleep" note for note. I was initially horrified at the somewhat cheesy in-your-face keyboard sounds opening "New Millenium," which was a big change from the more subtle Moore playing. It eventually grew on me and I now like FII alot. But our initial reaction was that DT's best days were already behind them and we were sad.

I became a DT fan no long after the release of Train of Thought, and it was my first album, but I wasn't already a fan when it came out.
And that brings us to Octavarium. I remember samples leaked on Amazon or something before they should have and I wasn't really impressed by them, but when I first got the album I loved it. That being said it has aged the worst of all DT's records for me and I now consider Octavarium to be either my least favorite or next to least favorite.

My first album was a live album, Live At the Markee, I instantly felt in love with Dream theater, i was 12 i think.
Then i bought Images and Words as it was the studio album around that time.. and i like it but i remember i liked more the live versions of metropolis and pull me under than the studio version.. maybe cause it sounded heavier.. i don't know.
since then.. i have bought all their album as they arrive.

First new release as a fan was Systematic Chaos. At the time, I liked it except for TDEN and POW. I thought it was a pretty solid release. Now I can't even listen through the whole thing. Easily their worst. BC&SL was the second (obviously) and did a great job restoring my faith.

I thought Dream Theater was turning into Journey was my very first reaction, but I was happy to have it because I didn't think there would ever BE a new album.
Wasn't very fond of the IMAGES either, thank goodness for the WORDS and MUSIC.

...and from that moment it has never disappointed me in anything. I got addicted to the album just like to every one of the other eight before getting it, and every single one of the eight songs had some time when I really loved it and listened to it lots of times (Prophets of War included, a year or so later also ITPOE Pt. 1 finally clicked). Repentance and The Ministry of Lost Souls got the "favourite" status since the first listen, and they hold it until now.

My first experience of DT was around 2004/2005, when some classmates of mine provided me with some individual songs from Train of Thought and Octavarium.
The songs as i recall: Panic Attack, The Root of All Evil & As I Am.
I loved them all, but for some reason i didn't dig deeper into the catalog, except for the fact that my dad bought Live at Budokan, which i really liked.
Systematic Chaos was my first 'new' release by the band, and it got good reviews in the magazines etc, and i really liked it.
ITPOE was an instant favorite, and still remains a top5 DT-song for me. (part 1)
Constant Motion was another early favorite (which i still love), overall i really liked the album.
Now the interest for the album overall has kinda faded a bit, but i still think its really good.

First album was 6DOIT when i was like 6 or something, my dad put on The Great Debate in the car and i just kept asking him to play it. First time i actually was aware of a release coming out was ToT, and when it came out, i listened to SoC over and over :metal :metal

My first DT album release since I had become a fan was actually the re-release of Live in Tokyo/Once in a Livetime. I wasn't as knowledgeable about the internet then, but I must've bought that DVD within a few weeks or so of it coming out, because it was in the summer of 2004. I watched it pretty often. At that time, the only albums I had were Awake, Images and Words and Train of Thought, and I just remember being totally blown away by what seemed like a really, really rich discography of music I had and hadn't already heard. I also watched it with the commentary tracks, so I learned a lot of things about the band that way. I really think that it's that DVD collection that made me fall in love with the band, because shortly after I just knew I had to buy Scenes and LSFNY. I didn't get L@B when it came out later, because of all the complaints people had about the sound not working properly. And because the setlist was full of songs I hadn't heard yet.
My first legit studio album was Octavarium, which I'm sure I bought a day or so within the day it came out. I had heard nothing of the album before hand, so I was pleasantly surprised. But, at that time, I was discovering bands like Nightwish and Blind Guardian for the first time. I was reading the Silmarillion again, I had just met my first girlfriend, and was busy working a really lame 1pm-9:30pm shift at Staples. So I don't even remember my reaction, other than liking it and then not really paying a whole lot of attention to it until much later.

I became a fan shortly after the release of Train Of Thought, so the next newest studio release by the band was my first, Octavarium. I found the new album very fresh sounding, and quite a change from the heavy-sided sounds of TOT and the experimental sounds of SDOIT. The idea behind the album also drew me in and made the album very special to me, and I still find it to be one of my favorite DT albums of all time, especially the closing epic.

Technically, Octavarium. I didn't get it straight away though since I wasn't a massive fan back then and many people said it sucked. I got it and I think I liked it. I remember thinking that the intro to These Walls sounded very similar to something Linkin Park would do, since LP was huge back then lol.
The first album I actually anticipated was Score and I would go into the store everyday for a week to check if it was in. When I got it I loved it so much and I cried during The Spirit Carries On hahaha.
When Systematic Chaos came out, I loved the album. I overplayed it though I think and now I can't stand it anymore.

Technically it was BC/SL, since I got into em only a couple of years ago. I was still into their more generic hits at the time, but my jaw dropped when I listened to CoT for the first time. That prompted me to actually listen past the intro of Octavarium, and now I'm a bit obsessed. I'm a bit ashamed to say my favorite song off that album before then was Never Enough...

I am a DT newby. I haven't had my first release yet, but something I've found out about DT's songs (and other prog songs) is that I rarely like something first listen. The songs grow on me. I've made these graphs to represent the enjoyment of a song respective to times listened to.

I remember my first thoughts of Glass Prison were, "Oh. This is some generic metal song...okay moving on..." Then it got to, "Huh. This isn't so bad. It's kind of catchy..." until finally, "Wow. Amazing. No doubt this is some of their greatest work!"

Was the first new thing I heard from DT once I was a fan. I really disliked it.
Then I listened to the real Octavarium and... oh, well, I hated Octavarium[/b]. When I was in the "Gabba gabba hey hey" part I was like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT!". Then I went to their concert and I started loving that song.

Interesting. I really liked the wordplay Portnoy used in that section from day one. Full Circle plus Intervals is stupidly fun to listen to, partially because of that.

Train of thought...i had just been exposedto dream theater right after six degrees was released even though i wasn't aware of that.. by 03 i was so pumped from listening to awake and SFaM that I was expecting a lot.. upon first listen i was a little weary of "as i am" but the other tracks grew on me except honor thy father.. 7 years later i don't listen to the cd that much even though i like ES, SoC, and itNoG a lot... a little off topic, but i am not a big fan of "black clouds and silver linings" tCoT is a winner though

I first listened/heard about Dream Theater before Octavarium came out. Got into them after that album came out, saw em at Gigantour, bought mostly all their albums, burned the rest from my friends then bought Systematic Chaos. I was happy with what I got, James sounded fantastic, the melodies were great and it was heavy. fell in love with ITPOE, liked forsakens melody (I Rarely listen to it now), Kinda liked Constant Motion, TDEN was alright, POW love the groove and rhythm it has, TMOLS I like how it Get's heavy in the instrumenal.
I'm starting to like this more than Black Clouds, because how it flows and has many styles.

BC&SL. I first listened to Dream Theater several months after Systematic Chaos came out. Didn't really go by albums at first, I mostly just listened to random songs here and there and really liked most of what I heard. By the time BC&SL was released, I had already come down from the initial "DT high", but I was still pleased with most of the album, excepting the lyrics.
And lol @ rob graphing his arousal relative to seeing graphs.

Six Degrees. I bought it on release, and I thought disc one was "ok". Disc two, on the other hand, blew me away. Today I actually prefer the first disc, it just needed some time to grow on me.

You could replace DT and DTF with any topic and subsequent forum respectively, and this graph will still work.

well i live in Toronto but i have some family in Quebec so I might going to the festival with them=D!! and i used to live in Quebec but then we have to move in Ontario (which sucks!!)...

I got into Dream Theater about 2 weeks after BC&SL came out, so the upcoming 11th album will be my real first taste of new DT material as a fan.

Octavarium was the first new album I heard by them. I got into them a few weeks before it came out. At that time I owned Images and Words, WDADU, and TOT. I was thoroughly impressed with the album(8VM) and sought Awake, SFAM, and 6doit in the following weeks as I could afford it.

Octavarium, loved it at first, but now the only songs I really listen to are TRoaE, SS and the title track.

I was aware of the band and a fairly big fan but did not have their discography when systematic chaos came out. Was not completley thrilled with that album. Got way more into them and had more albums by them when black clouds was released. Really enjoyed that album.
