Well 2011 is no surpise. It's now just a matter of when in 2011. I can't see something in stores before September at this point.

There were quite a bit of individuals saying that they thought 2012 made more sense. This is just to assure them that '11 is more likely. :)

I suppose it could be. I thought for sure that it would be 2012. Portnoy needs to spend some time with his family after what he's doing now. So I thought that they would record in September 2011-February 2012 equaling a June/July 2012 release

This is going to be awesome, I cant wait for it and cant imagine how its going to sound. Thats one of the best things with Dream Theater, and the reason why they are my favourite band, I couldnt imagine something like BC&SL after SC, and have no idea what we are going to hear on the new album next year.

Mike Portnoy posted that exact text in a bulletin on Myspace though. If 2011 was unconfirmed, he would probably omit that part from the text that he had control over.

Two are the possibilities : late 2011 or early 2012....if it should be released in 2012 it's not a tragedy...a long break would be better for them before the release of next album...and subsequent tour!

Well, I think their writing sessions would largely be dependent on when the individual member's side-projects/solo albums are done recording/mixing/mastering... AFAIK, JLB, JMX and JP are working on things right now, while MP is touring for the better part of the remaining months this year. They'll probably want to take a break in Nov/Dec/Jan before they do anything, so the earlier they'd start would probably be Jan/Feb 2011.
If the individual members wanted to tour for their respective projects, it'd give Mike some time to record with other performers (a new Neal Morse album perhaps?) and projects (SW and MA?), so then that'd take the rest of winter and all of spring, so then writing wouldn't begin until summer 2011. They'd probably write til August, then release in late 2011 around the holidays, then begin touring in Jan/Feb of 2012.
Worst case scenario, they begin writing in winter 2011, and release late spring 2012, and tour in the summer (European festivals, maybe Progressive Nation '12), then in the fall (NA tour leg most likely), break in winter, then continue touring through 2013.
