I'm just curious to know what everyone thinks about Rush and their favorite album :corn :tup
Thanks for your input!
-
Used to be 2112, now its Permanent waves. Haven't heard the last couple of albums yet, though...
My top 5:
1. Permanent waves
2. Moving pictures
3. 2112
4. Power windows
5. Signals
-
Out of the 6-7 albums i've heard, Permanent Waves.
-
PW :tup
-
impossible to pick just one, but I went with test for echo.
-
As always, Permanent Waves gets the slight nod over Moving Pictures.
-
I have a hard time deciding between Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, with Grace Under Pressure coming in third.
If I combined the albums and ranked the songs, PW has the best song, but the next 3 are on MP...
Edit - I went with Moving Pictures, like I did 8 months ago.
-
hemispheres
-
A Farewell to Kings followed a hair by Hemispheres.
-
I can't pick one.
-
permanent waves
in my opinion the most diverse album
-
For me it changes between Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
-
Moving Pictures, with PW close behind, and Hemispheres close behind that.
-
Power Windows followed by MP and PW. For some reason, PW is so damn uplifting and a very emotional album that I play over and over out of their catalog.
-
PW :tup
Power Windows indeed.
:hefdaddy
-
FEEDBACK :neverusethis:
Naw. 2112.
-
Hemispheres is nearly a perfect album.
-
Overall, I'd have to go with Counterparts.
Though 2112, Hemispheres, and Permanent Waves are super close.
I've tried and tried to get into Power Windows, but I just can't connect with it.
-
By "PW" I meant "Permanent Waves", but I will say that Power Windows is probably my favorite of the 80s synth-era albums. I love that album.
-
PeW = Permanent Waves
PoW = Power Windows
:hat

-
I'm torn between 2112 and Roll the Bones.
-
impossible to pick just one, but I went with test for echo.
ditto
-
AFTK, Hemispheres, and PermW are all perfect albums in my opinion. However, I had to go with Perm Waves. Its one of the rare occasions that Rush got a ballad right (Different Strings).
-
Who in their right mind thinks Roll the Bones, Counterparts, or Test for Echo are better than ANY of the albums in their "classic" run from AFTK through Signals?
People are welcome to their opinion, I just find that odd is all.
-
I think Counterparts stands up to the classic run from 2112-MP + Power Windows pretty damn well. So does Snakes and Arrows.
-
Counterparts and S&A are good
But Test For Echo? Absolutely not
-
FUCK YEAH VAPOR TRAILS
-
Isn't Feedback technically an EP?
-
Hard to choose.
1. Moving Pictures
2. Permanent Waves
3. 2112
4 Hemispheres
5. Test For Echo
-

I agree that those albums are very good, as all Rush albums are (I don't honestly think they put out a bad album), but I just don't understand how someone can say they're better.

Roll the Bones is one of my favorite albums of all time. I also think Presto is absolutely brilliant, which is another album I never see get any credit. Rush, like DT, is one of those bands that has so much incredible music, an album at the bottom of their discography can still be outstanding.

Different musical tastes. Same with DT.... a lot of prog fans will find the earlier albums better while the more metal-oriented fans will usually favor the later albums.
Personally, I love Rush's prog era, but I can definitely see how others might prefer the more straight up rock era of the late 80s/90s/00s.

Power Windows:
1. It was released during a great time of my life
2. Loved that it had a central theme
3. It just sounds so damn good!
-

I can tell you it's at the bottom of my list.
The rest are probably at the top.
-
The poll should be instead: "...other than Moving Pictures/Permanent Waves" :P
-
Hemispheres is my favourite, but Moving Pictures is the best.
-
I went with Moving Pictures.
-
Who's the joker who voted for Vapor Trails? :lol
:rollin
-
:lol If someone can honestly think Roll the Bones is their best album, then apparently anything goes.
-
I hope you are not insinuating that Roll the Bones is below Vapor Trails.
-
VT's emotion and songwriting is great, the production is bad but I don't understand the hate a lot of people have for it.

Of course not, but it's not too far above it.

I don't "hate" Vapor Trails, it's just one of Rush's worst albums.
-
AFTK
-
I am just now recovering from the shock of two people having voted for Test for Echo. :lol

Well it's the best thing they've done since it's come out.

If you don't count Vapor Trails and Snakes & Arrows, I agree. The best compliment I can give Test for Echo is, it was Rush's best studio album of the latter half of the 90s.
-
I can understand an argument for S&A being better, but VT? Really? :lol
-
VT is difficult to listen to from start to finish, for the obvious reason, but it still has five to six legitimately very good to great songs, while TfE might have one or two, at most. And while VT has a couple of ordinary songs, it has nothing as vomit-inducing as "Time and Motion."
-
Test For Echo has at least 3 excellent tracks and 3 or 4 more good ones.

I'm still trying to figure out why Half The World wasn't a commercial smash.
I'd love to hear Totem live one day.
There's really not a lot to dislike except for Carve Away The Stone and the title track doesn't really hold up well for me either.
-

Me too. I was shocked when that wasn't played on the TfE tour.

"Carve Away the Stone" is kind of like the last tracks from Rush's last two albums: neither noteworthy nor bad; just pretty good.

I find that to be the case with every Rush album since Roll The Bones. I often forget about those songs, tbh. :lol
-
I love "Everyday Glory" waaaaaaaaaay too much to say that, but last songs on Rush albums aren't as impressive as they used to be. Interestingly, Power Windows is the last Rush studio album where the last song on it got played live.
-
I was wondering the same thing the other day - is it weird that the last song on the last seven albums is actually one of my lesser favorites from that particular album? Except for Available light, that one is awesome. ;D
-
Voted for Counterparts, and I'll just re-use some of what I wrote in the top 5 albums thread, since it appeared there as well: as much as I love their earlier progressive insanity, Rush's return to a more organic, three-piece, hard-edged sound on this album was pure awesome. Concise songs, yet still with immense complexity oozing out of every measure. In addition, lyrically, the album stands out as my favorite from Peart, which is saying a lot. The concepts of relationships, sex, race, etc. all intertwine throughout the journey, no counterpart left unscrewed. All of these factors conjoin to produce my favorite Rush album, and the only proper musical choice for navigating that wilderness of mirrors we call life.
-
Where's the love for 2112? I thought that was one of their most revered albums, up there with Waves and Pictures, and I'm utterly shocked that almost no one else is picking it as their favorite...
-
2112 is more of a classic album just for the first song alone and being responsible for revitalizing Rush's career, not for being an album full of stellar songs. As a whole its still pretty awesome though, but there are a lot of albums that outclass it.
-
2112 the song is awesome. The rest of the album is just okay, in my opinion.

Hmm. I personally love the other 5 songs on it. I consider the album damn near perfect with no weak link at all.
-
If you asked every Rush fan in the world to rank their studio albums, 2112 would easily finish in the consensus top 5, but it probably wouldn't be number 1 on too many lists. It is very highly-regarded by most, but not many would say it is their absolute best. It is like PT's "Trains" being so popular; a lot of people might not say it is their best song, but most would agree that it is one of their best songs, hence it is consistently among their popular overall songs; same thing with Rush and the 2112 record.
-
Well put, and I agree.
-
Makes enough sense.
-
PW :tup
Power Windows indeed.
:hefdaddy
Yep.
:hat
-
After listening to it earlier, Permanent Waves just took the #1 spot over AFtK in my list!
-
I was going to rank the last songs on the Rush studio albums going back to Power Windows, but I can't seem to even manage that other than to say I really like them a lot.
My least favorites are "You Bet Your Life" and "Carve Away The Stone". I'd like to hear the rest ("High Water," "Available Light," "Everyday Glory," "Out Of The Cradle" and "We Hold On" live very much).
I like the second side of 2112 as much as I do the first side. "Twilight Zone" (although it has some cool effects) if probably the weakest song for me.
But then I'm as likely to choose Caress of Steel over 2112 as I am not.
-

"The Twilight Zone" might be my favorite song from Side 2; I love the galloping bass line during the verses. "Tears" is my other favorite from Side 2. The other three songs are all good, as well, but those two are my favorites from Side 2. :coolio

I went through a phase where I really liked "The Twilight Zone."
I kind of like "Tears" too, but after hearing James sing it, I don't really think of it the way I used to. James sings it so much better. Geddy does a pretty good job too, but he still had a lot to learn by that point.

To explain it yet again :p, the chorus is "Time and Motion" is nothing short of atrocious, and the keyboard sound they use underneath the main riff is laughably bad. It is just a really bad song, which even Rush is not immune to. But I forgive them for it.

Well, we're on opposite sides once again, my friend.
Time and Motion is my favourite off of Test for Echo, and among my favourite Rush songs.

lol at there being more votes for VT and S&A than Signals and P/G

Snakes and Arrows I can understand.
Vapor Trails should have -2 votes
