Considering that Dream Theater has been getting more attention lately (due to Mike Portnoy taking over drums on tour with a7x and the upcoming tour with Maiden) which base of fans do you think will be able to find it easier to like/listen DT's music?
I know that the a7x fans won't be hearing DT play like a lot of Maiden fans will, but my assumption is that they'll eventually look into MP and find Dream Theater because he recorded their latest album with them, and is going to be touring with them a lot this year.
So what do you guys think?

And that's one of the reasons I think Maiden fans will like DT better.

I'd say Maiden fans will be more apt to seek out DT music more than A7X fans.

I also think Iron Maiden. It's just closer to DT in terms of style, and on the last three albums (and also now and then in the past) IM has shown some progressive influences themselves.

I agree. But they like guitar solos, double bass, flashy stuff somewhat high singing and metal. Enough comparisons to DT. Iron Maiden are much more groove oriented and old school. Old DT would appeal to them, but new DT would mostly appeal to A7X fans, if anyone at all.

A7X fans who appreciate their range of style (like me) will appreciate DT for their differing styles. But I doubt a casual fan of them who just listens cause they get radio play (AKA not a fan) will get into the Theater all that much.

A7X fans I'd imagine. A7X is a lot more diverse than Iron Maiden, and will thus probably appreciate DT more than Maiden fans would. With that said, I believe Maiden fans would like older DT more, and A7X fans would like modern DT more.

I think this summed things up. I cannot say anything about both bands since I never checked them out seriously.

I think Iron Maiden fans. Although I never heard any A7X material it feels (in my personal opinion) like IM-fans are more used to long songs, instrumental breaks and cleaner vocals then the A7X-fans.

I get the feeling that the majority of the Maiden fans will be metal purists. Unless if DT's set list is the Raw Dog Maiden riff 500 times, I wouldn't expect the crowd to be too receptive.
I've seen plenty of comments on the net from A7X fans checking out DT material, though. It seems to me like they'd be more willing to give DT a shot and :hefdaddy

It's so obviously IM.
A lot of A7X's fanbase are very sceney and DT aren't sceney at all.
Plus DT have a lot of very obvious IM influences and IM fans often like progressive metal so...pretty clear really

Im shocked with the way this poll is going..and then with some of the comments. Perhaps they are by people who've never been to a maiden concert. Maiden fans are old bikers dressed in denim button up shirts and cowboy boots. They're the same age, typically as the Maiden band members. When I saw Testament open for Maiden...they were practically boo'ed off the stage "hurry up and finish" was yelled repeatedly....and they played a very tight set.
I believe the Avenged fans will be vastly more interested in some noisy prog metal band then a bunch of old bikers.

I absolutely do not understand this opinion. I don't get why some people have the opinion that Maiden fans only like traditional heavy metal, especially considering that Maiden was the jumping off point for progressive metal. Not to mention the huge amount of fans of Maiden on this forum.
And now I'm forced to revise my post because YtseBitsySpider either made the best or worst post in the entire thread.

Worst for sure.
Looking at the negative perceptions of both IM's and A7X's fanbase then you get:
IM fans won't like Dream Theater because they're not traditional enough metal
A7X fans woun't like Dream Theater because they're not scene enough and have songs that are far too long and complex to hold any attention
IM still wins, the IM least likely to like DT is more likely to like DT than the A7X fan least likely to like DT
Did that make any sense?

You may as well change the poll to: "Which band do you prefer?". You would get a pretty similar result.

Im just being realistic.
It also depends on which way these "new fans" start with DT's catalogue. If they started at beginning......maybe you'll hook the maiden fans. If you start at the end you'll get the Avenged fans.

I'm sure they'll pick up fans from both groups but I don't get why the idea that fans of a band that has made albums that are pretty close to progressive metal in the past is so ridiculous and that it's so obvious that they will automatically hate Dream Theater because they're all hairy bikers who hate anything that's not NWOBHM!

......tell that to Rush fans. To many of them Dream Theater are the anti christs of prog....wouldn't you think all Rush fans would just love all things DT???....and yet...we know this is not the case.

Yeah but the thread isn't saying that either all IM fans or all A7X fans will be interested in DT.
It's asking about proportions and that would be Maiden fans, I am positive!
You can say that about Rush but the fact is a Rush fan is more likely to like Dream Theater than a Pearl Jam fan because they're more similar bands. It's the same thing between Maiden and A7X as far as I can see

I picked Maiden as the obvious choice, but I'll tell ya one thing. If there are any A7X fans at those shows, there probably won't be very many.

I'm definitely going with IM on this one, though I think they'll pick up some fans from both.

I'm bringing my girlfriend to the IM/DT concert next month, and she's a HUGE A7X fan. She also really like DT and IM, and has some really diverse musical tastes, ranging from progressive death metal to radio pop.
