EDIT: the whole page is down

Just did a google search of latest pages about his death, and it seems quite a few places are talking about it, and many people have said they've confirmed it, but with no reliable links as sources... but it seems odd that RJD's website is down...

So fucking what? There's no need to instill panic and sadness if its not warranted. Yes, he is 67 and sick. But he was actively performing live up until last year. The guy is strong and has outlasted a lot of people.

I'm not shocked. It's just the fact that...he wasn't finished yet. The prospect of him never touring with Heaven and Hell again, or making another album, etc. is kind of hard to swallow.

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.

The page loaded for me, this is what it says:

Quote
Wendy Dio, wife/manager of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:

"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all.

"We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us.

"Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss.

"Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."

It was only a month ago that Dio, 67, spoke about his battle with cancer with the Artisan News Service on the "black carpet" of the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which took place on April 8 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. When asked about how he had been feeling since he was diagnosed with the disease late last year, Dio said, "Well, I feel good and bad at times. It's a long process. Chemotherapy is a... I never realized what a difficult thing it was to go through. It's a real cumulative effect — the more you have, the more it piles up on top and it takes longer and longer to get over it. I find it very difficult to eat. I don't like to eat anyway, so I guess that's OK. But I know I have to. But this makes it very, very hard. But if you're determined to beat it, then you have to go with what you believe is going to beat it for you, and in this case it's that. I go to a great hospital in Houston called M.D. Anderson, which I think is the best hospital in the world, I have the best doctor in the world, Dr. Ajani, who I really trust and I really believe in, so I think I've done all the right things. It makes me feel positive about my life and positive that there is a lot more of it to live."

Earlier this month, HEAVEN & HELL canceled its summer tour plans in Europe due to Dio's treatment for stomach cancer. The band said in a statement that Dio wasn't "well enough to tour this summer. We hope that everyone understands and want to thank fans and industry colleagues for their continuing support at this time."

Ronnie James Dio had performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects included the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He was most recently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also included former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first and only studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.

RIP

I guess the tenacious D song is finally true...
Which one?
Dio

Dio has rocked for a long, long time,
Now it's time for him to pass the torch.
He has songs of wildebeasts and angels,
He has soared on the wings of a demon.

It's time to pass the torch,
You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you.
We're takin' you to a home,
But we will sing a song about you.

And we will make sure that you're very well taken care of.
You'll tell us secrets that you've learned. Raow!
Your sauce will mix with ours,
And we'll make a good goulash baby.
Dio, time to go!
You must give your cape and scepter to me.
And a smaller one for KG.
Go! Go! Dio! Dio!

RIP

"In the heat and rain
With whips and chains
To see him fly
So many die
We built a tower of stone
With out flesh and bone
To see him fly
But why, it don't rain
With all our chains,
Did so many die
Just to see him fly
Look at my flesh and bone
Now look, look, look, look
Look at this tower of stone
I see a rainbow rising
Look there on the horizon
And I'm coming home
Coming home, I'm coming home"

Quote
HEAVEN (AP) - With the sad passing of Ronnie James Dio, rumors are already circulating throughout the psychic metal community of a new "metaphysical super-group" in the afterlife.

With John Bohnam on drums, Randy Rhodes and "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott on guitars, Cliff Burton on bass, and newly acquired front man, metal legend Ronnie James Dio, the new group - HEAVEN IN RUINS - will soon be unleashing musical chaos and mayhem to send angels and loved ones scurrying for cover.

Since the time-consuming slowness and heaviness of physical matter is no longer a factor, songwriting and recording will be instantaneous. In fact, their short-awaited debut album, "WHERE'S THE FIRE & BRIMSTONE?!", has just been released. Like, just a few minutes ago. Seriously.

A brief tour of the entire known universe will comme-- I mean, is already underway. Stops include Betelgeuse, the center of the Milky Way, the Horsehead Nebula, the Oort Cloud, and a couple of quasars.

Elvis Presley was unavailable for comment.

Damn.  It's a shame because he was truly the voice of metal, and the stuff he did with Black Sabbath in the 80's, 90's, and today (H&H) eclipse most of what they did with Ozzy.  Now, I'm really glad I caught Heaven & Hell last summer, just to hear that amazing ST song live at least once in my life--or one more, as I caught Dio opening for Maiden in 2003.

RIP Ronnie, you are truly missed.

From Elf to the invention of the devil horns, right through to Heaven & Hell, he made good music for us. I'll be getting more of his music for sure now. And what a charming fellow he was too, pretty much the ambassador of metal. I'll definitely be missing Ronnie James Dio.

Suffice to say, I was shocked too hear this today.    I know all of us have "Musical landmarks" in our lives.  I've had 3.... #2 was when I was in the Navy in '81 and bought Rainbows "Live on Stage" on vinyl.  From that point on, music took on a whole new direction for me.  The sheer power...intensity...and passion which illustrated Ronnie's vocals were astounding.  I haven't felt like this since the day I heard John Bonham died.

I just popped in the Rainbow Munich '77 DVD.  Next will be Heaven and Hell's DVD...... after that we'll play it by ear.

Today you Caught the Rainbow Ronnie.... thank you for the decades of sharing your musical soul with me brother.

I am still in absolute shock about this.  Heavy metal will never ever be the same, it has lost an important piece of its puzzle, that it will never get back.

I read this this morning and needless to say, my day at work was not productive at all.  I was dazed and numb, with my eyes welting up numerous times.  As I sit here now and listen to tracks like Die Young and Heaven and Hell, I remember back about 12 years ago when I discovered Heaven and Hell and the meaning of heavy metal.  The man's voice hooked me and has never let me go.  I still feel exactly the same as I did as a teenager discovering this amazing music.

His whole discography was from the gods and it simply isn't fair that he has been taken from us already.  He will forever be an immortal.  I can never look at heavy metal the same.  Heavy metal in a way, is dead.

At least Dio knew how much of a legacy he left.  Until his last day he had his head held high and died with so much dignity.  Life just isn't fair.

Crimson Sunrise, I'm with you on On Stage, especially Catch The Rainbow..a phenomenal performance.

Dio is on 3 of my Top 25 albums...Heaven & Hell, On Stage, and Holy Diver.

The thing that I will always remember about Dio is the sincerety with which he addressed an audience. All bands say stuff like "it's great to be here" and all that, but with Dio, you always felt the genuineness in his words.

I saw H&H 4 or 5 times and DIO countless times.  It's been disappointing watching his voice go slowly over the years.  He always sounded great, but it was hard not to notice the years catching up with him if you'd seen him 25 years ago.  The last time I saw him was with Priest and Motörhead last year, and was the best the man's sounded since 1985.  The guy was truly born again hard.  I'm pretty happy it worked out that way, since from my standpoint, the last memory I have was him belting out Children of the Sea and Sign of the Southern Cross like it was 1982 again.

TBH, I never really cared for any of Dio's music, whether on his own or with the other bands with whom he has been associated.  But by everything I've ever read about him, and interviews I've seen with him, he was always very humble and well-spoken, and always came across as a genuinely good guy.  Also, his impact on the world of metal cannot be overestimated, whether or not I liked it.

RIP

Dio was never a headbanger.  Plus, you need the horns on both sides.  And if you really want to get it right, the arms need to be bent.

Although I've never owned any of his material, and have only a cursory knowledge of his musical contributions, I have seen him on several metal documentaries and countless interviews, and thought him to be the most perfect ambassador to metal.  His universal acceptance by all metal fans and musicians (can't think of another individual who reaches that level) speaks for itself.  I always enjoyed hearing his sentiments on music, and his ever positive and mild mannered attitude always brought legitimacy to metal that I feel 'outsiders' would receive well.  A true loss to music, and to metal in particular.

One of my favorite tracks here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj3mKYASycg&feature=PlayList&p=43B0B84C9680679C&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=19

I agree Tac... That version of Catch the Rainbow is so ....soul wrenching.  Add to that the sheer power of Mistreated and Still I'm Sad...man......just phenominal.  I loved what all the folks (musicians) were saying about him on blabbermouth.  Obviously he was the Ambassador of Metal, hard...yet eloquent and mild mannered at heart.

He was incredible on Lock up the wolves, I think that album had his best performance EVER. Although he rules on every release he's ever sung on, even the Elf works.  :)

Lock Up the Wolves is a vastly underrated album.  It's a shame he didn't continue with Rowan Robertson, but since he left to do the fantastic De-Humanizer, I guess it worked out for the best.  It's just too bad that after that, he moved on with Tracy G.  Lock was great and Magica was great, but the two albums in between were crap.

As silly as this sounds, I'm really glad that the story reporting his death was on the front page of Yahoo for a few hours. I almost didn't expect Yahoo to consider it important enough to be front page material when you take into account all the other BS celebrity news commonly seen there. Brought a smile to my face cause it just goes to show how wide-reaching and influential he was not only in metal, but in all of pop culture.

And if you've been checking Blabbermouth since his death, you'll see an overwhelming amount of musicians from all sorts of rock and metal bands paying tribute. Really comforting to see how well-loved he was by everyone.

There's really nobody else in music that has provided me with as much joy as he has.  No matter how bad a day I might be having, I can always put on Stargazer and find myself elated 8 minutes later.

This. What a song that song is. It's pure musical magic.

Just listened to it for the first time having forgotten that DT covered it. Holds up excellently for a 34-year old song. Must've been brutal back in '76.

It has somehow reached me now already, yesterday I was in a state of complete shock, couldn't believe it... He should have stayed around for longer, there's not a single bad thing anyone could possibly say about him. Dear Ronnie,

I just got off stage in Zagreb. I was met with the news that you've passed on. I'm kind of in shock, but I wanted you to know that you were one of the main reasons I made it onto that stage to begin with. When I first saw you in Elf, opening for Deep Purple in 1975, I was completely blown away by the power in your voice, your presence on stage, your confidence, and the ease with which you seemed to connect to 6000 Danish people and one starry-eyed 11 year old, most of whom were not familiar with Elf's music. The following year, I was so psyched when I heard the results of you joining forces with my favorite guitar player. You guys sounded so right for each other and I instantly became Rainbow's #1 fan in Denmark. In the fall of 1976, when you played your first show in Copenhagen, I was literally in the front row and the couple of times we made eye contact you made me feel like the most important person in the world. The news that you guys were staying in town on your day off somehow embedded itself in my brain and I made the pilgrimage to the Plaza Hotel to see if I could somehow grab a picture, an autograph, a moment, anything. A few hours later you came out and were so kind and caring... pictures, autographs and a couple minutes of casual banter. I was on top of the world, inspired and ready for anything. Rainbow came to Copenhagen a couple more times over the next few years and each time you guys blew my mind, and for a good three years were my absolute favorite band on this planet. Over the years I've been fortunate enough to run into you a half dozen times or so and each time you were as kind, caring and gracious as you were in 1976 outside the hotel. When we finally got a chance to play together in Austria in 2007, even though I may not have let on, I was literally transformed back to that little snot nosed kid who you met and inspired 31 years earlier and it was such a fucking honor and a dream come true to share a stage with you and the rest of the legends in Heaven and Hell. A couple of weeks ago when I heard that you were not going to be able to make it to the Sonisphere shows that we would be sharing this June, I wanted to call you and let you know that I was thinking of you and wish you well, but I kind of pussied out, thinking the last thing you needed in your recovery was feeling obligated to take a phone call from a Danish drummer/fan boy. I wish I'd made that call. We will miss you immensely on the dates, and we will be thinking of you with great admiration and affection during that run. It seemed so right to have you out on tour with the so-called “Big Four” since you obviously were one of the main reasons that the four bands even exist. Your ears will definitely be burning during those two weeks because all of us will be talking, reminiscing and sharing stories about how knowing you has made our lives that much better.

Ronnie, your voice impacted and empowered me, your music inspired and influenced me, and your kindness touched and moved me. Thank you.

Much love,

Lars

I saw a rainbow at work in the distance today, I stared at it, smiled and remembered the God that has been taken away from us.

Probably the most well-spoken comments about Dio I have seen from Dave Meniketti of Y&T:

Quote from: Dave Meniketti
I feel the necessity to say something about Ronnie to my friends here on this forum. At this current moment in time this is very difficult for me as I'm extremely saddened by the news of his passing so I may not so eloquently say exactly what I feel, but here it is, just the same.

Though I can only speak of Ronnie as an acquaintance, his impact on me has been one of positivity and I will forever remember his spirit. This is not simply because he has been so kind to me over his career, but because he has reinforced the feelings I have for the way one should lead their lives as an entertainer and as a man.

His talent speaks for itself, but his kindness to his fans and commitment to his art was exceptional. This man, with such an amazing and uncanny voice that had lasted for his entirety, has taught me a few things about how to be selfless, yet frank and unapologetic about life as a public figure and artist. As I have witnessed, Ronnie, no matter how tired, would greet every fan with true sincerity and complete attention, never belittling them, nor seeming to show any trace of being impatient with the commitment that comes with being a star.

When I think back as Y&T started our first of many shows on tour together for the Meanstreak record in 1983, I remember my feelings about hearing his voice for the first time. We had just walked into the hall as Dio was sound-checking. I had made it half way across the concert hall, looking for our backstage room as he started to sing. I stopped in my tracks and looked back in amazement as this incredibly huge voice bellowed out from the PA speakers. I was both taken aback and incredibly intimidated by his ability. Absolutely astonished, is all I could feel.

Since that time, the band had become friends with the Dio bunch and have had many interactions throughout the years after.

I remember when we were recording our Contagious CD how the guys were across the parking lot rehearsing and we would each hang out at each others places. I remember the full bar, in a road case, that Ronnie had for their rehearsals and thought "how cool is that". I remember Vinnie selflessly coming in the studio to help Jimmy work out how to play the beat to LA Rocks when he was having trouble with the groove.

And I mostly remember how Ronnie had entrusted me to be the first singer on the "Stars" single for the Hear N' Aid project. His guidance as I sang the track was both knowledgeable and respectful, always in control and always a gentleman. I have many more personal memories that I will keep to myself, but suffice it to say that this man was a true star.

I terribly mourn the loss of him and celebrate him to the highest. We have all lost a legendary vocalist and, as far as I'm concerned, a fine man beyond reproach. For myself, I have lost what I considered a true friend in what can often be a cut-throat and unfriendly business. Long live Ronnie James Dio.

I just wanted to write a note about Ronnie James Dio and how much I will miss him.
Ronnie was the most genuine person I've ever met in the music industry. I think we've all had run-ins with our childhood heroes, and sometimes it can be a disappointing experience. This was definitely not the case with Ronnie, he was a wise, kind, and special person, and a dear friend that will be greatly missed.
Rest in peace brother, your spirit and music will continue to inspire generations to come.

But just because of that, doesn't mean I don't recognize his history, who he was and what he accomplished. I can have immense respect for the man without being a die hard fan.

And that is the case with me as well. I've only heard a handful of songs, but I completely respect what he did for music. However, the people I am referring to are the ones who this Lil Wayne is the greatest thing to ever happen to music, then get all sad when someone they've barely heard of dies.

By the way, I wasn't referring specifically to people in this thread or on this forum, just people i know.

Dave Menekitti is pure class.  Geezer's words brings tears to the eyes;

https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=140298

"It's impossible to express in mere words the relationship Ronnie and I, Wendy and my wife Gloria had. He was much more than a friend, fellow musician, band mate. If I have a soul, then he is part of it. I truly believe God, fate, destiny, whatever it's called, brought us together again in 2006, after not seeing each other for 14 years, to do one final tour, which turned into three major tours and an album. We were having a blast together, enjoying each other's company more than we had ever done before, talking about maybe doing one more album, when fate intervened again. We were planning on doing a two- or three-part North American tour, after having toured South America and Europe in spring/summer 2009, but on the first leg of the North American tour, Tony's [Iommi] hand ligaments were in a bad way, Vinny's [Appice] shoulder became dislocated, and Ronnie was having terrible stomach pains. We decided to cut the tour, get healthy, and carry on the following year. Tony and Vinny had successful procedures to fix their ailments, but Ronnie's stomach pains were worsening. I saw him at the Dio Halloween party, but he wasn't drinking, unusual for Ronnie who liked his tipple. He was telling me he had made an appointment with a specialist, to see what it was.....

"Wednesday, 12th May 2010.

"Wendy invited Gloria and I to lunch in Santa Barbara. A few close friends of Ronnie and Wendy, Omar, Simon, Paul, Tim, and Diana, had dropped by. Ronnie had no appetite whatsoever — the disease and the chemotherapy were taking an immense toll. As usual, we talked sports and had a laugh together — it would be the last time. That night, I had a beautiful email from him, that I will treasure forever. I sent him an email saying I'd see him during the following week.

"Friday, 14th May 2010.

"Wendy called to say she had taken Ronnie to hospital. The pain had become unbearable. We got to the hospital around 2 p.m. The doctor eventually sedated him. More and more friends were coming to visit — we took it in turns to hold Ronnie's hand, and whisper our thoughts to him. Wendy wouldn't leave his side — she stayed curled up on his bed the whole night. Gloria's assistant, Debi, kept her company. I emailed Tony to prepare him for bad news.

"Saturday, 15th May 2010.

"There was no mistaking Ronnie's room. There were around 25 to 30 friends outside his room. We knew the end was imminent. We all wanted to say our goodbyes. It was a day filled with tears and reflection. In the evening, the chaplain came, and we all gathered around Ronnie's bed and prayed. Ronnie wasn't going easily. At 11 p.m., most of us left, leaving Wendy her privacy to say her last farewell. The devastation was palpable.

"Sunday, 16th May 2010.

"7.46 a.m. As we were preparing to leave for the hospital, Gloria called Wendy to see if she wanted a coffee or any breakfast — she broke the sad news. Ronnie had just passed away.

"Wendy Dio has been a true saint through all this. She has been with Ronnie every step of the way. Her courage has amazed us all. Even as I write, she is ensuring Ronnie has the finest send-off possible. God bless you, Wendel.

"Most people who were there for those last days chose to keep their thoughts private. I wanted to keep my thoughts private, too, but I've been overwhelmed by emails, and requests from the media and fans for comments.

"I can truly say I've never known anyone to have such loyal, loving friends, fans, and family as Ronnie. He really was a special person, blessed with a unique voice and presence. He loved his fans — he would stay meeting and talking to them until the early hours of the morning.

"One of my fondest memories of him comes from last year, at the Sonisphere Festival, Knebworth. He noticed my sister and her husband at the side of the stage. During our opening song, he took the time to go over and hug them. Just a little thing like that made him special to me.

"Of course his music will live on forever, as will his influence.

"I have never seen so many tributes from so many musicians and fans, so many good wishes, no cynicism, just pure love and appreciation for a great man.

"God bless you, Ronald — thank you so much for the wonderful memories."

King Diamond's words I like also.

https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=140218

"It's with a heavy heart that I pay my respects to Ronnie James Dio.

"What an amazing singer and entertainer.

"Throughout my career, he has always been in my top 10 list of vocalists. The mystery and emotion in his vocal style always lured me in for more.

"Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure to meet him in person, but, fortunately, I did have the extreme pleasure of experiencing his uncanny frontmanship in concert so many times I can't even count it. I saw him with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and almost had one of my wishes fulfilled when HEAVEN & HELL asked KING DIAMOND to go on tour with them in the USA last year. Unfortunately, my back problems prevented that dream from coming true.

"I always had the highest respect for him and he will forever have his music playing in my home.

"My deepest sympathy goes out to Ronnie's family.

"I wish you a safe journey to the other side."

Tony's is a lot shorter and to the point.

https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=140174

"Yesterday 16th May my dear, dear friend Ronnie James Dio passed away at 7.45am L.A. time.

"I've been in total shock; I just can't believe he's gone.

"Ronnie was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. We had some fantastic times together.

"Ronnie loved what he did, making music and performing on stage. He loved his fans so much. He was a kind man and would put himself out to help others.

"I can honestly say it's truly been an honor to play at his side for all these years.

"His music will live on forever.

"Our thoughts are with Wendy Dio [Ronnie's wife/manager] who stood by Ronnie until the end. He loved her very much.

"The man with the magic voice is a star amongst stars, a true professional.

"I'll miss you so much, my dear friend."

Amazing stuff.

Along with Iron Maiden and UFO, Dio was the soundtrack to my high school life and further. Many great days and nights in the summers of 84 and 85 hanging out and Dio was what we were listening to. Dio's message really spoke to us, and even back then it was clear we were experiencing something special. I made sure I savored every moment because I knew they would come in handy when I needed a pick me up later in life. I've spent a lot of time these last few days reliving those moments.

Watched that at the shop today.  It's interesting seeing Dio sing Mistreated, since it's not really the sort of thing you expect from him.  He sounds great on it, though.  Of the various DVDs I have with Dio, it's probably my favorite, though it's honesly a little too much Blackmore wankery for my taste.

I'm alright with Cozy.  The guy was a machine, but it seemed like his bag of tricks was kind of small.  He was always rock solid, but never spectacular (except in the degree of his solidness).

I've always loved Ritchie Blackmore's wankery (see my Favorite guitar player thread) and could never get enough of it.  That said, I think one of the key differences between Rainbow and Deep Purple was that, Blackmore's Rainbow never had the keyboard wizardry of Jon Lord to balance it all out.  The man in black always ended up taking over the Rainbow show, whereas in the old days with DP, he had to duke it out with Lord on the wankery front, which resulted in a lot more interest and fireworks in the music itself.

I agree, Cozy Powell didn't seem to offer much as a technical player, but he did have that unmistakable signature sound... one of the heaviest drummers I've ever heard.

Very good observation about Blackmore and Lord.  My problem is that I'm a pretty marginal Blackmore fan, and Dio was one of my very favorite people in the industry.  I recognize that Rainbow was Blackmore's gig, but watching that concert it kind of came across as a Blackmore concert with 4 backing guys like some motown house band.

I've been listening through Dio's stuff in the car on my way to and from work the past couple of days.  I forgot how much amazing music the man's lent his vocals to.  The run of albums from Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow through Last in Line is just so amazing.  In those 7 albums worth of music, there's maybe 3 or 4 filler or mediocre songs total.  :metal

Those Westboro jackasses didn't even get his real last name right.  Dio never claimed to be a devil-worshiper (in fact, he sang Christian lyrics on a Kerry Livgren album!), I don't believe his band members have never worn "pentagons" (I'm guessing they mean pentagrams), and what's this bit about encouraging Sorcery?  What the hell is wrong with these people?  What happened to the commandments about lying or bearing false witness?

Her last name is "Padova", his last name is "Padavona"... not the same. :P  Also, their relation would be noteworthy enough to include on her wikipedia page, if it were true.

edit: Also, I agree, it wouldn't necessarily tarnish his name to be related to a porn star.  It just irritates me that these supposed Christians are outright lying, breaking their own commandments, in order to condemn another person as a sinner.

This guy worked with Dio up until his last tour with Heaven and Hell. When they took a break, he filled in for Josh Silver of Type O Negative on a string of US dates they did in the Fall. This was the last tour for BOTH frontmen of the band. :-[

This. You have no clue how enraged I was upon reading that this cult like group of religious nut-jobs is actually planning on doing such a thing. I mean, it's not like I put it past them to do something so...disgustingly cruel. But seriously? People just want to grieve and remember a man who is, to many, a hero among us mortal men (for example, my father. Ronnie James Dio is one of my dad's personal hero's. And he took it rather badly upon hearing the tragic news)

Sick. Just sick.

On a lighter note, during the monthly video broadcast I help work on and put out to the entire school, I added a little tribute at the end of the broadcast, right before the credits. It was a picture of Dio, with text I added which read "Dedicated to: Ronnie James Dio (1942 - 2010) Your heaven is our hell". Unfortunately, due to copyrights I couldn't add a snippet from a Dio song to go along with it, but I suppose a moment of silence was just as effective.

Dio Tribute Concert on July 24th

https://www.black-sabbath.com/news/2010/06/ronnie_james_dio_tribute_concert_announced.html

Today I'm proud to bring to you the details of the Ronnie James Dio tribute concert that have just been announced. Heaven & Hell have issued a press release (shown below) of the one off tribute show they're doing for Ronnie. It will be held on Saturday July 24, 2010 at the High Voltage Festival in London.

This actually was a gig that Heaven & Hell had planned to play with Ronnie, but it was canceled with the rest of the dates a few weeks before Ronnie died. It apparently has been revived, and there's some details available now as to what's going on for this gig. This will be billed as "Heaven & Hell", and the lineup will be:

    * Tony Iommi - Guitar
    * Geezer Butler - Bass
    * Vinny Appice - Drums
    * Glenn Hughes - Vocals
    * Jorn Lande - Vocals

Well, it's a matter of personal preference, really. One of my major problems with Sym X, but especially Allen, is that there is just no soul or warmth to them, and I just don't connect with his voice, emotionally. I'm not saying has can't sing or anything like that. He IS very talented.
In fact, whenever I have ever listened to Sym X, an especially on Paradise Lost (which I love BTW), I have always thought that Sym X would be so much better with Dio singing.

I have no problem with Glenn Hughes taking over some of the vocals...saw his solo band March 2009 and he played a few DP songs that would have put Coverdale to shame..( he actually mentioned it before preforming them...saying David doesnt play them anymore because he can't sing them anymore)

Jorn is a great choice, he will do Dio and the boys very proud, an amazing talent!

Hughes is a great choice aswell.  All three albums he has done with Iommi are phenominal!!

Just got back from a Sacred Oath gig... they played "Don't Talk To Strangers" as the first encore.  :metal

I watched "Tenacious D and the Pick of a Destiny" the other day. Such a great RJD cameo.

I don't like it.

*ONE* special occasion such as Wacken, it's fine. But a whole tour based on that idea... just no.

I wish they stopped calling it a hologram. It's just a Pepper's Ghost.

On the one hand, I can picture how it could be done quite tastefully. They could treat it as a retrospective with a variety of guest singers, and have the, uh, Pepper's Ghostic Dio appear for only a handful of songs introducing each era. That could actually be alright. Have It open the show with Kill the King then have guests sing one or two more Rainbow songs. Have It appear for Sign of the Southern Cross, then back with the guests. On and On and On it goes.

On the other hand, seeing the thing say thanks to the audience didn't sit well with me because of the earnestness RJD conveyed. There was a sincerity with him. He was the most gracious musician I've seen, and it never came across as thanks for the cheque. He was genuinely grateful. This is more of a cash grab, which is exactly the thing that Dio would have hated.

So true Bart. Dio made me feel like he was speaking to me, my crowd. It was an impressive talent he had. He seemed genuinely thankful.

On the No Prayer tour, Bruce Dickinson goes, "How you doing, Rochester?". Problem was, we were in Providence. :lol

I'm still curious how they pull that stuff off.

I mean, I assume the hologram is based on live recordings? If so, the actual live band has to play perfectly in sync to a pre-recorded live vocal track. However, since the live vocal track was not to a click or anything, how do they sync it up perfectly?

Well, even if the live vocal does not respect the studio tempo, it still respected the tempo of the song while it was being played live, I know nothing about click track but I don't think it's impossible to, uh, "reverse engineer" a click from a live song, once you figure out the tempo it was played.

It's really damn near. Since they're not playing to a steady tempo live. It would take forever to figure that out.

They probably end quantizing it all to a more standard click.

Well they certainly had that issue at the start at least..................the first example of the Dio hologram in concert had Craig Goldy miming guitar to what was clearly the sound from the Evil or Divine live DVD which featured Doug Aldrich on guitar.  Presumably the hologram was based on that gig too.

From a technological perspective, not that crazy difficult. First, create a click track that follows the original performance. Then, use audio/video stretching software to straighten out the tempo so the drummer can play to it during live performance.

I'm interested to see what this is all about.  I don't know Dio, but I can't imagine he would be overly cool with this.

My buddy Jim saw the Dehumanizer tour in Hartford at the Bushnell Theater, and he stood outside the bus in the empty parking lot in Hartford, in the cold signing EVERYTHING that fans put in front of him.  Jim said he was there for a good 45 minutes, and made sure everyone had their moment.   Can't put a price on that.

When he died Blabbermouth had a thread where they relayed stories from other musicians and industry folk, and there were hundreds of those stories. I remember one from a limo driver about how he tried to take RJD to the back loading area only be told to take him back to the front. People were standing in line in the cold and as he put it "I'm not going to pretend I didn't see those people." Got out up front and walked to the back glad-handing and posing for pictures in the cold. Dude loved and appreciated his fans and for that reason I don't think he'd dig this empty gesture.

Yeah he always seemed like the real deal and truly did appreciate his fans.

Speaking of Dio, hopefully this year they can rerelease the Hear N Aid sessions. Sounds like a new cd and DVD are in the works at some point per Wendy
