I had the chance to watch his instructional bass video and this is a guy who in my opinion has much more to offer when it comes to improvisation and soloing etc, would be nice if the band will give him a bit of space to elaborate some of those skills.

i couldn't agree more

I don't think it's a question of lack of space. I think JM consciously took the back seat.

I agree, and it totally fits with his personality.

I'm getting a feeling this topic is recently recurring more often than Kevin Moore not long ago...
I agree with rumborak but I'd also be happy if he got a more active role since the next album.

Urban breed does this too and it's still not cool. :neverusethis:

I get the feeling that he's been forced there.

What makes you think that? As someone else said, it corresponds to his personality that he doesn't want to be in the spotlight.
That being said, I also would love to hear more out of him.

There is no evidence of any kind or even possible rational reasons why he would be forced to become passive.

False.

Request: expand.

JMX, in the early days, always seemed to really give it his all when it came to the bass. That peaked in Falling Into Infinity. The man is absolutely ALL OVER THE PLACE on that album. It contains his best bass work, IMO. However, more recently it seems that he's not giving it his all anymore. His lines are usually nothing more than doubling JP/JR
This is the evidence that he's been forced to the back seat. Why would he change from being such an 'outspoken' instrumentalist to being a doubler? I can't imagine him just saying (lol): "I don't feel much like writing cool lines anymore." There has to be something more

People change. He is married, and maybe he just decided that he's better off parting his duties this way than competing with JP and MP, and at the same time have less time for his family.
