So, here's the idea of this thread. For those of us who know the bands that the members of Transatlantic come from (we should ALL be familiar with at LEAST one of them...), we know that they are four of the most prolific and popular prog bands today.
But what if you could make a band with different members from those parent bands and create something new? For example, here are my pics...
Drums & Vocals - Nick D'Virgilio
Guitars - Steve Rothery
Keyboards - Jordan Rudess
Bass - Jonas Reingold
It would be a mix of atmospheric Floydian grooves (Steve and Jordan) and jazz/fusion (Nick and Jonas) with ballad-esque tendencies. It wouldn't be over-the-top symphonic prog, but it would still be very complex, and with Jordan's keyboard wizardry and Jonas' fantastic bass melodies, you'd bet there would be some awesome key/bass lines with Steve offering gentle, smooth guitar. And of course, Nick would have no problem keeping up with Jonas (as he sat in during the US leg of The Power Of Two tour feat. Agents Of Mercy and Karmakanic). Their name would be 3RD (Rothery Rudess Reingold D'Virgilio).
So... now it's your guys' turn! Also, I'll allow a 5th member if you don't pick someone who can play an instrument AND sing lead vocals.

Crosspacific, I assume?

LOL I thought about that, but TA themselves used "Transpacific" as a joke-name for their recording of "Smoke On The Water", on the BAF Limited Edition 2-Disc set. Three of them switched instruments around (I believe it was Neal on drums, Pete on keys and Mike on bass) and fooled around during the sessions for the second album.

or..how about imagining how Second Nature would have come out, had Jim Matheos not been too busy with making the latest Fates Warning album. Jim was the original guitarist for that project along with Mike, Pete and Neal.

Well, to get the same feeling as Roine, there is only one choice for....
Guitars - Steve Rothery
And you'd need a solid lead vocalist, so...
Drums and Vocals - Nick D'Virgilio
And then a secondary song-writer that has a band somewhat similar to Transatlantic
Bass - Jonas Reingold
And top it off with what is left...
Keyboards - Jordan Rudess
So, same conclusion as the OP.

I wouldn't really say that the pieces of Transatlantic are the "most popular and prolific prog bands today." Maybe back in the 90s, but certainly not today, with maybe the exception of Dream Theater.
Anyways, coolish lineup, assuming we start with Mike and Neal:
Drums: Mike Portnoy
Keys/Vocals: Neal Morse
Guitar/Vocals: Devin Townsend
Bass: Tony Levin
Another lineup:
Drums: Mike
Keys: Neal
Guitar: Chris DeGarmo
Bass: Colin Edwin

You're doing it wrong;)
Well I don't get a better band than in the OP.
And I would love to hear that!

Well it wouldn't be any kind of Transatlantic without Mike and Neal. The title should've been "ultimate prog supergroup" otherwise :)
