Title: The Theocracy Thread
Post by: contest_sanity on May 03, 2010, 05:18:49 AM
Couldn't find where anyone else had posted this, so here goes: apparently, Nevermore held a contest where they released an instrumental version of their track "The Obsidian Conspiracy," and then asked fans to write their own lyrics/record their own vocals.  Matt Smith from Theocracy did a version which I think is pretty awesome, found here:

Enjoy :metal

Did the picture not show up for you?

Either way, that was beyond fuckin sweet. The lyrics were overall fairly good, but man those vocals. Matt Smith =  :metal :metal :metal

Yeah - no pic showed up for me.  It's funny because a bunch of the youtube comments were ripping Matt Smith for submitting as an already established artist.  Well, I doubt Nevermore is actually gonna pick his submission.  As he pointed out, he's just a fan, who also happens to be an artist, having some fun.  I really enjoyed it, and I hope it might help some Nevermore fans who don't know Theocracy to discover them.

Not a bad cover.

The vocals are just a bit too much for this song though.

Warrel Dane cannot hit those high notes like he used to, but his voice is definitely getting better with age. Nevermore's version should kill it.

Is Theocracy in the same vein as Nevermore, musically. That dude from Theocracy can sing. I may have to pick up their albums...

A tad godly...but...meh...nothing like some good old christian lyrics to remind you that faith actually exists on this planet.

First off, I am an unabashed Theocracy apologist.  They are actually from Athens, Ga, which is also where I live.  As for Nevermore comparisons, I actually don't listen to much Nevermore... YET.  Hoping to get into them soon.  But Theocracy is a little on the power metal side, though with a lot of just progressive metal as well.  I would say they're somewhat close to Sonata Arctica's evolving sound on The Days Of Grays (Theocracy actually opened for SA this past weekend in Atlanta).  Theocracy's vocalist, Matt Smith, is AMAZING!!!  I would recommend first listening to the song "Laying The Demon To Rest" -- that song is incredible: progressive and thrashy, with one of the most epic choruses ever.  And the opening vocal note is a contender for the longest held note in the history of metal.  So check them out; I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Just heard their two albums (Self-Titled and Mirror of Souls) for the first time today. The first one is quite decent (The orchestration could sound far better, though), but it's nothing like the Mirror of Souls. That album is incredibly epic.

Yeah, their first album was locally recorded here in Athens, Ga.  Considering the fairly low production standards, it sounds ok.  Interestingly, there is no band on that cd; it's all just Matt Smith.  It was only afterward that he put together a full band.  Mirror Of Souls does indeed sound amazing; it does full justice to the incredible music it contains.  Rumor is they hope to begin working on album three soon.  I can't wait to hear it, and I hope they continue to grow in popularity.

Also, I edited the thread title to make this the official Theocracy thread :metal

Matt Smith just posted this video of them playing "Martyr."  The sound is surprisingly good for such a seemingly poor rehearsal space.  I am, however, spoiled by Matt singing all the harmonies himself on the album version; those other dudes just don't cut it.  Also, the blurb about the video mentions them beginning to work on new material.  I'm sure it will be amazing, though I do hope for some more guitar solos this time around :metal

Very sweet.  I was turned on to them by some random dude in Target.  He came in with one of their shirts on and I was like "is that a band?"  He said yeah, so I asked him who they sounded like -- to which he said, "I don't know, maybe Dream Theater."  That was enough to make me want to check them out and boy am I glad I did. Mirror Of Souls has probably been my most played cd over the past year or so.  I can't wait to hear some new tunes from them.  Also, as a Christian myself, I really appreciate that aspect of their music/lyrics as well.  There just aren't that many good Christian metal bands out there, so it was great to discover a new one.

If you want some more "Christian Metal", check out Trouble - Psalm 9. I'm not religious, but that album is fucking awesome, but its more in the vein of Black Sabbath. Awesome shit nonetheless.

I think that should be a festival tour: Christians and Pagans.

For the Christian side I would pick: Theocracy, Tourniquet, and Believer.

How about the Pagan side?  You would need one power/progressive metal band, one progressive metal band, and one progressive/thrash metal band.

I know Mirror Of Souls (their most recent) is on itunes.  That album and the debut (s/t) are probably available from Amazon as well.  I doubt you'd find it anywhere in a physical store, though.  While the debut has some decent stuff on it, Mirror Of Souls is light years ahead of it.  Are we to take your interest as a sign of liking this band, bosk?

I really like what I've heard so far (and, no, I can't tell you the names of specific songs I've heard without going back and checking again, but there are quite a few songs on YouTube that I've checked out).  But can't find them in any store, and I've been looking since :spider: first mentioned them to me about 2 years ago.

Well, the debut was released on God only knows what label.  Mirror Of Souls is on Ulterium/Nightmare, which I'm guessing is still pretty obscure, at least here in the states.  I would recommend getting a copy from Amazon or from the Theocracy website because you ain't gonna find it in a store anywhere.

Fuck yeah, Theocracy -- flying the flag for Christian metal  :metal

Matt Smith sits at the right hand of God and gives vocal lessons to mere mortals.

You know something I find interesting, especially within the genre this music is in, is that the album never gets boring at all even though there are comparatively few guitar solos.  I think it really shows the strength of the songwriting.

The debut was released on a label called Metal Ages Records, which as near as I can tell is defunct; the fact that the latest thing I can find connected to them on Google is a page from 2006 strongly suggests that. Metal Ages also released Power of Omens' excellent Rooms of Anguish the same year the Theocracy debut came out, which meant that a tiny label that apparently had only six or so releases put out two of my favorite CDs of 2003. Mirror of Souls was an improvement of light years over the debut, which I enjoyed greatly but kind of suffered from being a one man band project. (Programmed drums, I just can't get into them.) Glad to hear they're working on a new CD.

jsem - glad you liked some of the songs.  That title track truly defines epic!  The thing with the "cheesiness" or whatever is that, while I can totally understand why someone would have that opinion, I don't care.  I just adore what Matt Smith does vocally: choruses, verses, whatevs.  Maybe it helps that I'm a fan of the lyrical content, too.  I could definitely see someone who wasn't particularly religious really hating the lyrics, although there are several peeps on this board who like Theocracy just fine without being religious.  So who knows?  One person's cheese is another person's glory sent down from heaven.

Finally got Mirror Of Souls. I bought it from a place called ImportCDs, who specialize in import versions of CDs hence the name, yet I got the regular addition without the bonus track, Wages Of Sin, which was advertised in the description as being on the album. I listened to it on YouTube and it's a pretty good song. Reminds me of a heavier Offspring.

Been spinning the new single on Spotify.  While it didn't immediately hit me like "On Eagles' Wings," I am really starting to like it after 10 or so spins.  Really memorable chorus, some super speedy parts, and, finally, a ripping guitar solo.  I'll be interested to see how having a shredding guitar soloist will impact the album as a whole.

I've actually only listened to it once all the way through so far. I noticed some similarities in the melodies, but other than that it's a good song, although I was a lil diappointed. I'm sure it'll grow on me. That teaser trailer has me impatient.

Title: Re: The Theocracy Thread v. I MET THE MAN HIMSELF
Post by: contest_sanity on November 02, 2011, 01:38:29 PM
I MET THE MAN (MATT SMITH) HIMSELF:

So I’m working up at Target in Athens, Ga., managing the checkout lanes on a normal Tuesday night.  I’m standing by our returns desk and in walks a guy who looks kinda familiar.  I can’t place him at first, but then the thought crosses my mind: “is that Matt Smith, lead singer and founder of Theocracy?” (He’s from Athens)

I proceed to notice his Mirror Of Souls jacket.

It’s SO him!

I try and gain my composure for a minute and then boldly launch into the following question: “Excuse me, are you Matt Smith from Theocracy?”

He and his lady friend (girlfriend? Wife? Not sure…) both turn towards me as he answers in the affirmative.

At this point I’m like completely star-struck for a moment, as if I’m meeting Jesus or something.  Luckily, I am able to stammer something along the lines of: “I love you guys’ stuff.”  He, of course, thanks me.  I start to feel a little more normal since I actually completed a sentence, even though I feel visibly nervous.  I think Matt makes an observation about my name also being Matt (Target name tags – gotta love em).

He mentions that they just got done with a tour in Europe.  I ask him how it went, and he says it went pretty good except for a string of shows where he had lost his voice due to very poor touring conditions.  I respond with sympathy: “That must have been tough.”  He agrees.

Then I tell him that I actually heard about the band in my Target.  Someone came in wearing their T-shirt and I asked about it.  The fan described the music as having some DT-esque elements, and so I checked it out.

“Cool,” he responds.  A little bit of silence, and then he mentions that they’ve got the new album coming out later this November.  I say that I’ve already heard the single and that I dig it.

His lady friend pipes up at that point and says, “Well, spread the word about the band.”

I assure her that I already talk the band up a lot on DTF and that there are a few pretty devoted followers already.

Matt interjects that he hasn’t been to any DT forums in a while but still occasionally browses MP’s.

It’s obvious they do want to get back to shopping, though, and so I kinda let the conversation end.  They say that they’re actually shopping for a wedding gift for one of the band’s guitar players.

We part ways.

Man, how incredible!  To me and my musical taste that was almost as significant as meeting Petrucci or Alex Lifeson.  I only regret that I had no camera for a pic nor anything cool to get an autograph on (“Mr. Smith, could you sign my break schedule?”  Yeah, that would have been massive douchebaggery).  Oh well, he is just a human like me, so maybe I didn’t need an autograph anyway.  He was so cool about the whole thing, though, just taking it all in stride – as if he gets recognized at Target all the time.  Probably happy to know he’s got some U.S. fans out there.

I've only listened to this once with one earphone in, so I haven't given it much of my attention, but from what I heard, the lyrics are really obnoxious this time around whereas with Mirror Of Souls, I could sing along to songs like Bethlehem and all was good. Also, this album is desperately trying to be Mirror Of Souls, and is only really pulling it off be copying vocal melodies and elements from other songs. Nailed copies Laying The Demon To Rest's prolonged wail at the beginning for starters. I'll give this album a proper listen, but those are the things I noticed first. And I really don't like the lyrics to I Am. I love to verses in Light of The World though.

I wouldn't say it tries to hard to be MOS. Stylistically, they are definitely similar, but that's who they are. You can say that about most bands though. Most Power and Thrash metal bands tend to paint themselves into a corner over time, so you could see that happening with Theocracy, but I think that's still a while off.

I love the Kill 'em All style ending to The Gift Of Music. I Am is definitely my least favorite.

Cartoon celebrity Bart Simpson’s favorite metal band is brazenly dubbed “Satanica,” which offers us an interesting insight into how pop culture in the U.S.A. perceives heavy metal music.

I had to stop reading and post how wrong this is, since I am a major Simpsons nerd.

Season 11 of The Simpsons Season 11, episode: Alone Again Natruadiddily, Reverend Lovejoy gets the band Covenant, a Christian band featuring Rachel Jordan as the singer, to fill in for the organist who is on a much needed vacation.

Lisa asks Marge, "Hey isn't that the bass play from Satanica?" and Marge replies, "I think it is." Bart makes no reference to a band called Satanica at any point in time.

Although in another episode, Lisa The Sitter, again similar situation, where a Pentacostal band named Testament (Obviously the Simpsons didn't know their less known Thrash bands) Bart says "Pfft, All the best bands are affiliated with Satan."

Sorry I had to get that out there....yes I am that simpsons nerd.

But back on Topic I really like Theocracy. I don't care if the lyrics are christian or not. I play as much Neal Morse as I do Behemoth. Theocracy is just good music.  :metal

That's a hard comparison for me to see, being that I know about 4 songs from both of those bands combined... but as long as you like the Theocracy record, it's cool.  I am loving this new album; it's pretty easily my AOTY.  All of the vocals are top-notch (as was to be expected), but the real surprise to me is just how much Val Allen Wood shreds on lead guitar (he wasn't with them yet on their last album).  Well, Bosk, keep as updated on your thoughts as you continue to take it in.

I'm on the title track (last song) on my first spin of the entire record (listened to the first four songs separately on the drive in this morning), but I can't really listen at full volume in the office.  This is going to be a tough one to rank.  I don't mean this as a slight, but in one sense, it's "generic power metal" for lack of a better term.  There are things I love about power metal, and things that I find so grating that it turns me off completely.  This album sounds like it definitely has both of those elements.  But the things that I like (the complex motifs, the heavy guitars augmented by complex keyboards, etc.) are abundant.  And the added progressive elements as well as the lyrical themes are likely to hold my attention.  So this bodes well.  Still, it's probably going to take a little bit for me to really figure out what I think of this album/band.

My take on the album so far, from a thread on another forum where I said I couldn't decide whether I like it or not:

If you have to think about it, you obviously don't.

Not necessarily.  It's more a combination of (1) haven't fully digested it yet because I haven't had it very long and I have a ton of other music I am actively listening to much more often, and (2) I don't actively dislike it, but I'm still kind of on the fence because there are things I like and things I don't.  "Undecided" about sums it up best.

Some of the things I can note:
-Thrashy stuff:  Like.
-Big, happy, cheesey power-metally stuff:  Eh.  Some of it is cool.  Some of it just doesn't do it for me, and this is a big part of their sound.
-Singing:  Overall, I like.  There are times when the singer seems like he is outright channeling Michael Sweet, which I simultaneously like and dislike.  Other times, he sounds completely original.
-Vocal arrangements:  These leave a lot to be desired.  It bothers me when there are too many lyrics for the sonic space in a given song.  There's just too much thrown in, and there's no way a singer could pull off those vocals live because there's nowhere to breathe.
-Lyrics:  Overall, pretty good.  But there are times when I feel they fall into the trap of a lot of bands that go for a religious message, which is they can be very cliche.  There are a lot of deep, profound messages to be found in Christianity that can be explored without throwing around shallow cliches that do not represent those much deeper ideas.  Dunno, maybe I'm being too critical here, but this is something that annoys me a bit.
-Overall song arrangements:  There is some good stuff.  They strike a nice balance between straightforward and complex.  By that, I mean that the songs generally are much more than simple verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus, but they don't just meander aimlessly all over the place either.
Title: Re: The Theocracy Thread v. New Album IS OUT

-Thrashy stuff:  Like.
Me too.  Very much so.  I wish they would do a whole song or songs in the thrash style.

-Big, happy, cheesey power-metally stuff:  Eh.  Some of it is cool.  Some of it just doesn't do it for me, and this is a big part of their sound.
Do you feel like certain songs are more in this style or that the power metal sound is so spread throughout their sound that it makes it all a little questionable?  Granted, I don't listen to a lot of power metal, actually, so I'm no expert in the genre, but the only tracks that to me come off as straight power metal are "The Master Storyteller," "Hide in the Fairytale," and "Light Of The World."

-Singing:  Overall, I like.  There are times when the singer seems like he is outright channeling Michael Sweet, which I simultaneously like and dislike.  Other times, he sounds completely original.
Never really listened to Stryper or his solo stuff, so I can't really say if this is good or bad.  I think Matt Smith is an amazing vocalist, though.

-Vocal arrangements:  These leave a lot to be desired.  It bothers me when there are too many lyrics for the sonic space in a given song.  There's just too much thrown in, and there's no way a singer could pull off those vocals live because there's nowhere to breathe.
I've never noticed this at all.  My bigger concern seeing them in concert would be that it's impossible to do all the harmonies and choirs Matt Smith so painstakingly records on the album live.

Granted, I haven't sat down and listened with the lyrics in front of me, but I think overall these are pretty good lyrics that go beyond what you typically hear on, for instance, Christian radio.  "Light Of The World" is the only song that strikes me as being close to cliche.  "As The World Bleeds" is actually quite profound, lyrically speaking.  It gives a very vivid picture of how humans decide to play by their own rules, mess up the world, and then somehow blame God for how f'd up everything is.

-Overall song arrangements:  There is some good stuff.  They strike a nice balance between straightforward and complex.  By that, I mean that the songs generally are much more than simple verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus, but they don't just meander aimlessly all over the place either.
Yes!  I especially like how "I Am" has the Irish interlude and then follows it up with the slightly DT-ish instrumental passage.  Likewise, the title track is just a riff factory, and I love how many different ideas are incorporated into it.

BTW - does Samsara listen to/like Theocracy?  He hasn't commented in this thread in a long time, but I assume he had some interest if he was asking your opinion of the album.

To me, what gives ATWB the edge over MoS is the new lead guitar parts: Val Allen Wood is a world class shredder, and he really pulls out all the stops on the new album.  I didn't think MoS could be topped in all honesty, but as of now ATWB manages to do it, and it's mainly a function of all the new solos.

As a lyricist, sure a few of his songs are cheesy ("Light of the World," "Absolution Day"), but overall I think Matt Smith is a pretty decent lyricist, especially for the style of music they play.

I don't feel like I'm getting any kind of ecclesiastical bludgeoning from the lyrics like some bands in this genre can do sometimes.  And I don't mind a bit of cheese so it's all good.  I think I agree about the guitar solos.  They definitely kicked it up a notch on ATWB

You gotta give it a listen.  Like I've said several times now in this thread, the leads and solos take ATWB to a whole different level.  The title track, especially, is just jaw-dropping.

I listened again yesterday to think on this, and I agree the verses aren't bad, but they are not particularly memorable to me, either.  I think partly it's the style of the song, with the "woah-oh-oh-woh-oh-woah-oh" intro vocal, and then the repeated "light of the world" refrain in the chorus, that make it seem a little cheesy.  I still like the song, though.

So I'm going to see the band tonight as they play their (and my) hometown of Athens, Ga.  It's gonna be a short set b/c it's a benefit for a studio with lots of bands on the bill, but I'm still supes excited.  I also kind of got an invite from Matt Smith himself.  Remember last year when I shared the story of meeting him at Target (see here (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=12929.msg1125759#msg1125759)).  Well, one of my fellow coworkers approached me yesterday and asked me if I was a Theocracy fan?  I was like, "yeah, and why do you ask?"  She said that Matt was her cousin and that he remembered there was a tall dude who worked at Target who was a fan of the band.  He wanted me to know about the show.  Now I don't think I am particularly memorable or anything; I just think there are very few power/prog metal fans in Athens, so anybody who would actually stop him in public would naturally stand out.  Anyway, cool story bros.  I'll let y'all know how the concert goes.

The show was really great, although it was only about 45 minutes long. There were lots of bands on the bill, so nobody got a lot of time. The band also chose (wisely) to play mostly shorter songs rather than the epics. Setlist was:

Wages of Sin
Martyr
The Master Storyteller
Mountain
Light Of The World
Hide In The Fairytale
Drown
30 Pieces Of Silver

Every song was great, although HITF was a particular favorite. Thrashing to 30 Pieces was also amazing. I forgot, though, that I am no longer in my 20's and will definitely be feeling sore from the headbanging.

So yeah: cool story bros. Lastly, here's a pic of myself and Matt:

Intriguing. I like the first album but if they rerelease it with some better production as well, I'd definitely double-dip.

So, seeing this was not posted. Kind of older news, but:

They have found themselves a new drummer and are recording a new album! They are in the studio this week.

(live rehearsal with the new guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYuJCiJZP08 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYuJCiJZP08))

Oh, and Matt released a charity single (not under the name of Theocracy, but similar music nontheless) with some guest vocalists last year:

THEOCRACY: NEW ALBUM "GHOST SHIP" ANNOUNCED

The Athens, Georgia-based melodic metal band THEOCRACY will release their new album "Ghost Ship" on October 28th in Europe and North America through Ulterium Records. Information on different editions and formats will be announced soon.

With Ghost Ship, Theocracy perfects the lively and fully-realized sound of As the World Bleeds, delivering 10 muscular and streamlined tracks that never lose focus and combine for one memorable journey. You like midtempo singalong anthems? Try the “Ghost Ship” title track. Thrashy rhythms and intensity? “The Wonder of It All” should be to your liking. Emotional ballads with huge melodic hooks? Go “Around the World and Back.” Or if you prefer epic, progressive tracks that do all these things and more, 10-minute album closer “Easter” is sure to be a favorite. Each song on Ghost Ship stands alone and has a unique signature, but every moment sounds unmistakably like Theocracy.

“So many kids were coming up to us after shows and telling us their stories,” says Theocracy vocalist Matt Smith. “A lot of them were searching for purpose and a place to fit in, and having grown up as an awkward and unpopular kid myself, their words really stuck with me. I started thinking about what a band of misfits Jesus’ disciples were: fishermen, tax collectors, and people of little consequence in the eyes of the world. Sometimes the ones most people don’t see, or choose to look straight through—the ghosts of society, as it were, dead to the world—end up having the biggest impact. That’s where the title and idea for Ghost Ship came from: all the misfits, the uncool, the outcasts, there is a place where you do fit in. Although Ghost Ship is not a concept album, this is a recurring theme, particularly in the title track and ‘Castaway.’”

"Ghost Ship" track listing
 01. Paper Tiger
 02. Ghost Ship
 03. The Wonder Of It All
 04. Wishing Well
 05. Around the World and Back
 06. Stir the Embers
 07. A Call To Arms
 08. Currency In A Bankrupt World
 09. Castaway
 10. Easter

Personally for me, there are some songs on each of the last two albums that I LOVE.  But there are also skippers on each (for me, at least).  The good songs more than make up for the OK songs and it's an automatic buy for me anyway.  So they absolutely can improve on an album for me, but they are already great quality.

I don't mean the above paragraph as a knock at all.  I feel bad even presenting criticism.  I love the band.  Every time I think about Theocracy I kick myself mentally for not meeting Matt Smith when I had the chance, I saw him at the first Morsefest and totally could have approached him but chickened out and decided against it.

First impressions...

The wait is finally over!!!  I've been anxiously waiting for this release - didn't want to be disappointed.  I'm totally not disappointed, Ghost Ship rocks!!!

After reading reviews, I was kind of expecting it to be "As the World Bleeds: Pt 2" or continuing down more of that melodic path.  And maybe I could see why some would think that (and for the record that wouldn't even be a bad thing as that album was so great).

Instead, I was pleasantly surprised at the heaviness and thrashy riffs throughout.  It's obviously still melodic, as that's what makes Theocracy great (one of the things).  But my first impression is that it just has more overall power than their previous album.  Not any more or less progressive, just great new power melodic metal.  The songs don't sound like rehashed versions of previous Theocracy albums.  Matt Smith proves again what a great songwriter he is (still regretting not meeting him when I saw him from a distance at the first Morsefest - darn my shyness!).

"Paper Tiger" "Ghost Ship" and "Wonder of it All" are all great examples of the heavy songs (of these 3 my favorite is Paper Tiger).  Then there's the "ballad" on the album, "Around the World and Back."  This is THE song on the album for me, I got misty eyed when I first heard it honestly.

One review compared the song "Easter" to "I Am" and pulled the "Neal Morse influence" card.  I don't hear it.  Maybe I will with more listens, but to me they are nothing alike, and I don't hear Neal influence (although I do with "I Am").  Not a good or bad thing.  "I Am" is a one of a kind song that may never be topped.

Man, I wonder if Theocracy is on DT's or maybe even Portnoy's radar? Would be dope to see them get an opening gig or a cruise slot with some bigger names. Although they already get huge crowds in Europe, not so much here in the States. The lead singer, Matt Smith, and I, have kinda become virtual friends over social media. We live in the same town (Athens, Ga), and we correspond on occasion over NBA-related content on Facebook. I try not to fan out too much over Theocracy, but I'll bring their music up every now and then. Anyway, all their success is deserved. Couldn't happen to a nicer (or more hard working) group of guys. Hope they continue to grow for decades to come.

Posting.  Following.  Loving this band.  Just discovered them as well in the last year - despite YtseBitsySpider giving them to me in my first roulette - ironically, Laying the Demons to Rest ... too thrashy for me, it just didn't click.  Other than that putting me off them for a few years, I'm kicking myself, because all four albums are top notch.

It's funny, because Laying The Demon To Rest is pretty much the only song I'll listen to from them anymore. Loved Theocracy back when that album came out. When I listened to As The World Bleeds, I realized I had gotten over their sound. Should give that record another chance someday.

So I just started reading this thread last night and decided to check out a couple songs. I listened to Mirror of Souls, and I Am.
Mirror of Souls is truly epic with Alot of great twists and turns. I noticed the high octane lead guitars more on I Am.
Is it just me, or are the vocals always really high in the mix?  I only listened to these songs on my phone so the musical spectrum is likely subdued causing the vocals to cut through too much. So what I'm asking, do the vocals come across that way on a nice sound system?

I can allready tell that there seems to be too many words crammed into these songs which doesn't allow it to breathe. It will take a little getting used to but maybe it's a grower. I won't form my opinion based on these two songs.
I would like to buy one of their albums, either MOS, or ATWB, or Ghost Ship. Any recommendations?

Honestly, I'd go with Ghostship. It's their most recent, and besides Easter, the Christian leaning lyrics (which are no big deal to me) are not as blatant.

Both Mirror Of Souls and As The World Bleeds are excellent though. I mean, you really can't go wrong.

Matt just released A Tower Of Ashes live from The Mad With Power 3 Fest in Wisconsin from last month:

Their set at ProgPower was so damn good... My only complaint is they didn't play On Eagles' Wings because that is one of my favorite Theocracy songs. But I got Absolution Day, so that was the highlight of the show for me.

The highlight for me was Laying The Demon To Rest. It's a decent set, but I Am is like one of my least favorite songs of theirs.

And I'm the reverse.  Laying the Demon to Rest is rather meh, whereas I love I Am.  That vocal speed-fest in the middle was impressive as all hell live.  I told Matt later, 'hell, I can't even read that fast!'

LTDTR is thrash excellence, whereas "I Am" more diverse; I love the Dream Theater section near the end of "I Am." Their best track, though, is "As The World Bleeds." Was that played at ProgPower?

I Am is pretty good, I'm just surprised they ended with it and not, you know... On Eagles' Wings.  :lol

Laying The Demon To Rest was NOT a song I expected them to play. I LOVE that tune and they nailed it. I banged the f out of my head during this set and did not care who was next to me when I was windmilling.  :lol

Funny, I'm hearing it right now!

Nothing will ever beat Wynter Fever as a Christmas song, but this one isn't bad.

I heard a couple of other songs from them, Laying the Demon to Rest and Betlehem, one day I guess I'll have to check their Mirror of Souls album. Cheesy power metal is not my main musical attraction nowadays but damn, the singer's great.

Really cool to see Neal Morse's involvement in this. He does a great job. Daniel Heiman is amazing on this. Literally the best vocal I've heard from him since Lost Horizon. Matt Smith should write all of his music going forward.

Nice song  :metal     If I had to be picky, the tinny lead sound at 2.15 grated on my ears a bit and Neal Morse wasn't a good choice to carry the aggressive vocals at 3.45  (might just be me) but overall I thought the song was pretty awesome.   I wasn't a big fan of the last Aegis track but this  :metal

Wow, that track was phenomenal!

That interview piece was pretty crazy. Amazing that such a fucking amazing musician is also so humble to be like "listen, we're not gonna do a new Theocracy record until I feel like I have another album's worth of unique things to say and explore." Major respect when we see so many bands just putting out the same thing over and over. Frustrating, though, because of course we all want new music from the band.

EDIT: could we have Matt Smith join Sons of Apollo or something?

If he is not inspired enough for a Theocracy album, he should consider making a comedy/parody album of sorts, perhaps under another name. I think he has some real talent in that regard (also see Wynterfever).

From what Matt told me, it started with a poster that was created as a gift for fans who would only pay for postage (it's an awesome poster). Wood instead, without the knowledge of the band, sold it for profit and pocketed it. He also grifted fans by soliciting "donations" for new tours, albums, equipment, dying family members, etc. Matt is now trying to reach out to those affected to figure out how to make it right and personally apologizing for Wood's actions.

I was really irritated to see that people were demanding a new album in the comments of the announcements. They just fired a partner who they had worked with for a decade and had discovered just how deeply betrayed they were. There is no way that an album is on their minds at this point. The lack of respect by the fans is astounding.

Will, fans can be impatient. But honestly, Theocracy's last album was FOUR years ago. Their website is hardly updated. So now they let their guitarist go. OK.

Matt did say in an interview when The Rest Is Mystery was released that he's not focusing on Theocracy anyway.

Seems Theocracy played two shows at the Loud And Proud Festival in Germany last month.

According to Setlist FM the setlist was:

A Tower of Ashes
The Master Storyteller
Nailed
The Gift of Music
The Sixth Great Extinction
Absolution Day
Paper Tiger
Ghost Ship
I Am

Interesting to me that half (4 of 8) of the older tracks come from As The World Bleeds.

They did premiere a new song..The Sixth Great Extinction.

I don't know if you guys are aware but Matt Smith is also involved with scoring/playing the music for a Netflix series that is still in production, with none other than the legendary Bob Rock himself. After a long wait, we are excited to finally break the silence with some exciting Theocracy news! Not only is the new album mastered and ready to roll, but we’ve signed with a new label for its release. We appreciate your patience, as we understand that it’s been a quiet couple of years from our end. The calm before the storm. While the album has been done for a while, it took time to weigh our options and decide which would be the best path for us going forward, as you might imagine. We were fortunate enough to have several good choices in the form of offers from multiple labels, and we’re all very excited about our ultimate decision. More info to come in the following weeks. At the same time, as many of you know, we have also been working behind the scenes to right the wrongs and restore the trust violated by the actions of a former band member. To those of you who have handled this wait with grace and understanding, we thank you sincerely.
In closing, we want to thank Ulterium Records for a wonderful partnership. Not only was it a great working relationship for the last three albums, but we forged friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. A while back, Emil from Ulterium informed us that he needed to scale down his workload for the sake of his health and his family, so he was stepping away from bigger new releases. He said he wanted Theocracy to work with a label that is able to invest 100% of their time and energy into the band, and he was invaluable in helping us secure a deal with a label that we believe will do just that. So we extend a huge thank you to Ulterium, and to Emil in particular; he was vital in helping us maintain the level of quality we demanded across all of our releases, and together we released a catalog of work that we can all be proud of forever. Onward and upward!
More updates coming soon. God bless you all.

From their FB page:

THEOCRACY join the Atomic Fire Records family; to release fifth studio album in autumn 2023

Atomic Fire Records is massively proud to join forces with Athens, Georgia based progressive power metal five-piece THEOCRACY. Formed in 2002 to spread their majestic metal in the likes of STRATOVARIOUS, SONATA ARCTICA and SYMPHONY-X, THEOCRACY released four critically acclaimed studio albums, building a loyal fanbase as well. Now teaming up with Atomic Fire Records, the band consisting of Matt Smith (lead/backing vocals), Ernie Topran (drums), Jared Oldham (bass/backing vocals), Jonathan Hinds (guitars/backing vocals) and Taylor Washington (guitars/backing vocals) are more than ready to take THEOCRACY to the next level.

Vocalist Matt Smith comments, "We are thrilled to be members of the Atomic Fire Records family. From our first meeting, it was obvious that they've loved and supported our music for many years, long before there was a possibility we might work together. This personal touch was very important to us, and combined with their impressive roster featuring some of our favourite bands, we are so excited to work together for this new album release and beyond!"

Atomic Fire Records A&R Markus Wosgien enthuses, "We're more than happy to welcome THEOCRACY to the Atomic Fire Records family! With their latest album »Ghost Ship,« the band created a milestone in power/progressive metal history and I remember very well that I had the CD on endless rotation in my car for several years - and it keeps blowing me away. It's just one of those records which you'd pick for a trip to a lonely island, it's an album that recalls why one has become a metalhead: Because such tunes make addicted, one needs to sing along to them, and they fulfill our hearts. With their upcoming new album, THEOCRACY have taken it all another step further and have reached a new level, without repeating themselves but with adding more diversity to their sound. The world stands in awe of an album full of hymns, beauty and pure magic once again.”

For more than 20 years, Matt Smith has been pouring his life blood into THEOCRACY, creating a legacy and back catalogue that grants him a safe space to breathe and develop his vision.
"It's my life's work," says Smith. "All I wanted to do since I was a kid was writing songs, so THEOCRACY existed in my mind for many years before the first album. It's the vehicle that has taken me all around the world and allowed me to exceed my wildest dreams by getting my songs out, and I am so thankful."

THEOCRACY's fifth studio album will see the light of the day later this year.

Last week, US progressive power metal quintet THEOCRACY announced their signing to Atomic Fire Records, and the new partners aren’t wasting any time in revealing details of the group’s highly- anticipated forthcoming studio album. As brilliantly showcased by its stained-glass-window-like artwork by Steven Howard, the offering has been given the name Mosaic. The ten new hymns were recorded, produced, and mixed by THEOCRACY’s own Matt Smith at Theocracized Studios and Full Moon Studios in Athens, GA, and rounded off by skillful mastering engineers Emily Lazar and Chris Allgood at The Lodge, NY. Mosaic will be supplied in various formats (see below!) to Theocracy’s loyal followers worldwide on October 13, 2023 via Atomic Fire Records, and can be pre-ordered now.

Mosaic will be available in the following formats:
-CD-digipak (EU)

He even dresses just like Eddie Trunk.   :lol

Sounds like a pretty good song, though I prefer their heavier moments like the title track to Ghost Ship.

He does! haha

I too prefer their heavier sound. I hope we get that on this album.

On their website, it mentions that the new song "Red Sea" will be a near-20 minute epic!

This one is a hell of. monster track, pretty well written, cohesive, melodic, this one will be a favorite of all for sure.

I listened to the new songs, all of Mosaic, half of the other one, and then Ghost Ship. They weren't bad. I stopped listening to Theocracy after As the World Bleeds because it was, to me, just a copy of Mirror of Souls, but not as good, and more preachy. I'll stick to Mirror of Souls for my Theocracy fix. The songs are great despite the lyrical content. Even though it's fantasy, it's from a source that puts a very bad taste in my mouth. Plus, it already makes me uncomfortable saying "I like Theocracy." Mirror of Souls the song has some eye rolling lyrics, but damn is it an epic song. And the fact that I love singing along to a song about the birth of Jesus makes this album a true anomaly.

I'm pretty sure Project Aegis is also religiously themed in the lyrics, but I wish he would do more songs for that.

I feel the same way about this band.  The title track to Ghost Ship is probably the only song I really love.  I just can't seem to get into any more than that.

Next Friday, we have the opportunity to interview Matt Smith. Kindly post your questions for him in this thread.
Title: Re: The Theocracy Thread
Post by: TAC on September 21, 2023, 03:01:12 PM
1. Any plans to tour?
2. How does he keep the rest of the band engaged with such long periods between albums? Do they all have regular jobs?
3. What is the future of Project Aegis?

Title: Re: The Theocracy Thread

Two Questions:

1. With 2 new members of the band, how much did that impact the recording process on this album?
2. Can He go into detail about his inspiration for the song 'Mirror of Souls?' I've always been curious.

The interview went well, lasting around 25-30 minutes. I plan to release it tomorrow. The video is prepared, and I'm currently editing the transcript to remove filler words like "um" and "you know," as well as ensuring proper formatting.

While I was excited to converse with him, I admit I was quite nervous, which might come across when you listen. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable conversation, and Matt seemed to have a good time too.

The more I listen to this album, the more impressed with it I am. Every single song is a banger.

Top 3: Sinsidious, Return to Dust, Liar Fool or Messiah

I've been waiting to listen to this album until I have a listening party for it with my sister, who is also a Theocracy fan.  Thankfully, that is happening tonight.  I'm excited to hear it.

I ordered the vinyl months ago from Amazon, and then last week suddenly it says it isn't shipping until December.  Lame.  I'm not going to cancel the order or anything, but at least I can listen on spotify in the meantime.

The new album ROCKS.  Like A LOT.  Finally listened to it tonight.  First impressions - lots of great rocking songs with some nice thrash parts.  Early favorites of those are Flicker and Anonymous.  The Greatest Hope actually made me teary eyed.  Great song.  Not surprisingly though, my favorite on the album is easily Red Sea. Way too early to know how this epic stacks up against something like Mirror of Souls.  Definitely need to listen to it a bunch more.

This album is amazing. Like I expected it to be, but it is!!

Eddie Topran's drum track is incredible. I feel like this might be Matt's strongest album vocally, and he just slays the ending of Anonymous.

Red Sea is fantastic. It doesn't have the emotional pull of Mirror Of Souls, but the instrumental section is amazing.

Yeah, the instrumental part of Red Sea is killer.  It is a testament to the quality of this band that I keep buying their albums despite being an athiest.
