...and tell me what songs you would like DT to cover (whether live or for a future bonus disc or something). Please don't list any songs by other prog metal bands - let's use our imagination and think of something interesting that they could do well with.
My pick is "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers Band.
-
Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche.
:neverusethis:
-
"Take Five" and "Blue Rondo A La Turk" by Dave Brubeck Quartet
Anything by Bela Fleck & The Flecktones.
Also, my obvious prog choices would be Yes' Drama, Genesis' Wind & Wuthering, and Rush's Signals.
-Marc.
-
Yeah my serious answer was going to be some fairly laid back jazz like Dave Brubeck. Some of his tunes are so great to jam over, DT would have a field day.

Exactly, and being that "Take Five" was originally constructed as a showcase for the drummer, I'm sure MP would enjoy cover that "solo", much in the way I'm sure he enjoyed doing the drum solo on the Santana cover during the sessions for TA's The Whirlwind
-Marc.
-
Santa Clause is coming to town.
-
Space Dye Vest.
-
I still would like to hear The Yes Album in it's entirety.
-
What about some classic German thrash metal, like Kreator? They've done Metallica, but that would be a different challenge entirely, as it's a different style and I'd love to see how they would handle it.

I think he, at least implied, that metal in most forms was "inside" the box.
-
He only mentioned prog metal, which I guess means most prog in general. What I said is, even if metal, definitely outside of the box for DT.
-
Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin
-
Btw, Depeche Mode is another thing that just came to my mind.

ok.
-
Some Skynyrd would be pretty interesting.
-
Some Skynyrd would be pretty interesting.
Oh please no - besides they already did part of Freebird on OiaL - that's enough! :P
Off the top of my head, I'd pick Love to Love from UFO tho there are many others that I can't recall at the moment.
-
I've always thought what would happen if they cover Judas Priest's "Victim of Changes" or "Blood Red Skies"
-

I was actually going to add in "but not just throwing in the end of freebird"
But some Simple Man or something would be pretty neat.
-
Some energetic big band era stuff would be cool.
-
Some energetic big band era stuff would be cool.
It would be cool to hear Dream Theater cover the Fallout 3 soundtrack
:neverusethis:
-
"Stardust" by Hoagy Carmichael
-
Either some Threshold or Sieges Even
-
It would be cool for them to play some XBox 360.. on stage.
No, I'm not serious.

JR probably isn't too far off from that.
-
And knowing him, after the initial WTF reaction it would actually turn out to work well with the music...

...maybe.
-
And knowing him, after the initial WTF reaction it would actually turn out to work well with the music...
God of War would disagree with you.
-
Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode...I am really curious to know what JR could do in here.
Vicarious by Tool...I am really curious to know what JP could do in here.
-

God of War would disagree with you.
I don't see the point of using Raw Dog as a negative argument for anything since it's not even considered by the band to be a full, 100% strong and polished DT song.
-
They've already covered both, but anything by Queen and Elton John. Specifically, "It's Late", "March of the Black Queen", "Tonight" and "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"

It was a joke dude, lol.
-
Damn Yankees - Come Again (or Piledriver for JLB shenanigans).
Wolfmother - White Feather
Boston - Smokin
-
Have they done The Wall or was it just Comfortably Numb? 'Cause I'd love to hear them do the whole album. Or 2112?
-

That's not really outside the box. Unless this thread has turned into...either saying any song you want DT to cover, or naming funny songs you think DT should cover.
-
Other posters have mentioned bands that were prog but not necessarily prog metal, so I figured that was legit.

I just don't think it was the point of this thread. I know het only mentioned prog metal, but I'm pretty sure he wanted somethin that wasn't obvious. DT covering pink floyd is well........obvious. As well as rush.
-
Cold as Ice-- Forienger
Aja--Steely Dan
-

I mean I dunno, I can't really think of anything else good. And I don't wanna hear them butcher Sgt. Pepper (not that I mean for that to reflect anything upon DT, I just don't think that's the sort of music they could play well).
-
Also, Styx - Man In The Wilderness
-
Also, Styx - Man In The Wilderness
Good call, there erha! There's a ton of Styx they could do. Suite Madame Blue..............
-
How about some KISS? I don't listen to them, but I think Mike's love for the band would be a good stepping-stone to getting the band to cover some of their songs/albums.
-Marc.

This, kind of.
-
Kind of? More like "totally".
-
I've heard JP cite Stevie Ray Vaughan as a huge influence on more than one occasion. Some blues would be interesting.
-

Everyone else in the band would be soooooo bored. I'd hate to see how they butched it by trying to make their instruments more interesting.
-
I can't think outside of that box, but I like some of the recommendations so far
-
Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson (but possibly in the style of Alien Ant Farm, or some kind of hybrid)
-
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Soul to Squeeze. I think James' soft vocals would do it justice, however I don't think it should be played the same instrumental wise. I'm thinking slower with some piano in it, maybe an epic build up to a soft ending?
Les Misérables - Bring Him Home. Nothing to change I would just like to hear James' sing it.
-

Hang 11 from An Evening With JP and JR is largely based on Take Five, so they've kind of already done that.
It'd be really cool if they did Blue Rondo too sometime in the future, but I doubt it :-\.
-
Du Hast - Rammstein
Pussy - Rammstein
-
Off the top of my head, I'd pick Love to Love from UFO
Oh..another reason to love Setlist Scotty! :tup
-
Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson (but possibly in the style of Alien Ant Farm, or some kind of hybrid)
lolno
DT would destroy anything Michael Jackson.
-
Gary Moore..The Blood Of Emeralds
Alice Cooper...Halo Of Flies
-
Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf..........
Or some Pinkly Smooth
-
Aerials - System of a Down
or
(insert title) - System of a Down ;D
-
Mahavishnu Orchestra
-
Tech N9ne - Blackened The Sun
YOU GOT SOME PUSSY IN THOSE PANTS, WANNA SHARE DAT?
-
I'd love them do do some old Chicago like--------
Make Me Smile/So Much to Say, So Much to Give/Anxiety's Moment/West Virginia Fantasies.
7 minutes of old school epicness. Imagine the horn sounds from JR?
-
Opeth - The Drapery Falls, with Mike Portnoy doing the growl-parts. :neverusethis:
-
Have they covered Radiohead?
I'm thinking Paranoid Android would be cool.
-
"Eyes Like Yours" - Shakira
Yesterday I was imagining that if one day I were driving in some US highway and MP were hitchhiking and get into my car I will want him to listen to this song. I think the "intro" to this song will really please him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFZT1trXLpk
Having said that, I would like to listen a cover of DT playing "Ojos así" by Shakira.
-
Yay Shakira!
I'd love to see James LaBrie doing the dance :lol
-
Pink Floyd's Time - I'd love to hear John do that solo...
Stan Bush's - The Touch
Mr. Mister - Kyrie...for the intro.....I'd like more of a DT version on this one.....
-
Pink Floyd's Time - I'd love to hear John do that solo...

-
Scorpions- We'll Burn The Sky
-
Tech N9ne - Blackened The Sun
YOU GOT SOME PUSSY IN THOSE PANTS, WANNA SHARE DAT?
:omg: :omg: :omg: :omg: :omg:
Someone here knows about Tech N9ne!
-
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Boidz uh Fiyah iz tyte!
-
Y&T - Summertime Girls
Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf
J. Geils Band - Centerfold
Uriah Heep - Stealin'
-
Sorry Em....I thought we were talking a nice clean studio cover...not a boot.
-
Non prog? THROUGH THE FIRE AND FLAMES.
*runs*
-
The entire score from the musical Sweeney Todd. And yes, I'm completely serious. I saw the musical for the first time last week (live) and I was completely blown away by the music. The whole time I was watching, I was thinking about how fantastic it would be to hear Dream Theater cover Stephen Sondheim's awesomeness.
-
Interesting.....I went to dreamtheater.net for the first time in..oh....many many years. In fact I didnt' even know the site still existed.
Once there...I was treated to the Dark Side of the Moon video/audio preview....and..WOW..that sounds really good. Might just be the first DT cd I buy in a long time.
-
Listening to a live version of it during my workout this morning, it occurred to me that Dream Theater could probably do serious justice to U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name," so long as Rudess sticks with the background keys and doesn't try to Rudess it up with annoying solos. JLB has the vocal style to nail the vocals just right, they have covered U2 before (I am guessing JLB and Portnoy are the U2 fans in the group), and the song was written to be a monster live.

That would have been an awesome choice for the unplugged shows they did on 1997 with Derek.
-
How about Never Surrender or Fight The Good Fight by Triumph?
-
"Head Over Heels" by Tears for Fears
-
Bon Jovi - Bad Medicine
-
I think they could do something creative with In the Mood, by Glen Miller.
-
"I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
Just kidding.
Real answer: "Darkness" by Peter Gabriel (from the UP album)
-

I likr this one. I'd also like, "More Than This" from that album also!
-
Any Firewind song from Premonition or Allegience. Something more aggressive like "Till The End Of Time", "Where do we go from here" and maybe some softer stuff like "Deliverance" or the absolutely majestic "Before The Storm". seriously guys. go youtube that song right now. 3 and a half minute instrumental of pure bliss.
Also, they've showed more power metal influences in their past couple albums, how about something from Gamma Ray? or Stratovarious? They have some great songs that I think would work. Maybe it's just wishful thinking though. Then again, most of this thread is just that lol.
-

I haven't thought of that, but it would be amazing indeed.
-
Some great suggestions in this thread (and, admittedly, some that I find strange or have never heard - but that's cool). Awesome job, guys! :tup
-
Id love to see JP and JR at the front of a stage playing the guitar harmony at the end of hotel california with a gui/key -tar combo. Don't think the rest of the song would suit the band much though...
-
I'm pretty surprised someone suggested Kreator. Imagine James Labrie singing this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fAs_4yZsAI
In all seriousness, it'd be kind of interesting to see them cover a Micheal Jackson song, (smooth criminal was said earlier) but maybe a different one, since alien ant farm already did it.
-

Was thinking the same thing. Whoever said "Blue Rondo a La Turk" gets a prize. Some other cool tunes/albums:
Bon Jovi-Slippery When Wet
Styx-Most of the Tommy Shaw-written tunes, like "Blue Collar Man," though a song like "Babe" would be good too.
Boston-"Smokin'"
Queen-Yes, they've already covered Queen, but they do it so well dammit!
Derek & the Dominoes-Layla
Living Colour-"Cult of Personality"
Meat Loaf-"Bat Out of Hell," "I'd Do Anything For Love."
I find DT at their best when they're rockin' out.
-
Styx-Most of the Tommy Shaw-written tunes, like "Blue Collar Man," though a song like "Babe" would be good too.
Good call on Styx. I hadn't thought of it before, but James would be phenomenal on some of their songs.
-
Barracuda by Heart. An instrumental section that DT could really appreciate.
-
I'd love to see them play some fusion-esque stuff.
Something like
CAB - Hold On
Or
Howe Wooten Chambers - Extraction
both don't have vocals though.
-
Frankenstein by Edgar Winter.
-
Reptile - NIN
-
Supertramp--Give a little bit.
Judas Priest--Headed out to the Highway
Black Sabbath--Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
The Fixx--Deeper and Deeper
-
JLB would sound awesome doing a cover of "Child in Time" by Deep Purple
-
He's already done it.
-
 how have I not heard this!?
-

-
Bat Out of Hell - MeatLoaf
The Final Countdown - Europe
Livin on a Prayer - Bonjovi (admit that would be fun)
The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Magic Power - Triumph
What is Hip - Tower of Power.
-
Cold as Ice-- Forienger
Aja--Steely Dan
and this
-
What is hip!!! :metal Maybe a little Soul Vacination!!!
-
Taxman by the Beatles from the Revolver album. :metal
-
Styx-Most of the Tommy Shaw-written tunes, like "Blue Collar Man," though a song like "Babe" would be good too.
Good call on Styx. I hadn't thought of it before, but James would be phenomenal on some of their songs.
Especially Come Sail Away.
JLB would sound awesome doing a cover of "Child in Time" by Deep Purple
This is my favorite track amongst the 4 cover albums. Phenomenal.
I've always thought they'd go a great version of any Boston song. I think it'd be right in their wheelhouse. But that's not exactly out of the box, now is it.
Bon Jovi?? really. If they covered any Bon Jovi song, it'd have to be Blood On Blood.
-
Blood on Blood. Great call TAC. That's my favorite album cut by them.
How about Judas Priest's Green Manalishi. That would rock.
-
Yeah, Blood On Blood is a great song. it always reminded me of Thin Lizzy's It's Getting Dangerous from their Renegade album. (check it if you don't know it!)
As far as Priest goes..can you imagine James singing Riding On The Wind?! That'd be insane!
-
Oh oh Judas Priest - Beyond the realms of Death :metal
-
Here's a few that I think DT could really do justice to:
Metallica--Unforgiven III: I'd love to hear it, just to see JLB exceed Hetfield's scream.
Foreigner--Jukebox Hero: While you can't really match the original, this has a great epic feel to it that DT could replicate quite nicely
Rush--BIg Money: I have no idea how this would sound, but I think this would be a cool slant on their 80's synth-era material
Jesus Christ Superstar--Gethsemane: If JBL is on his game, the vox on this would be truly amazing
Scorpions--Woman: A lesser known tune from the Face the Heat album, this would be really smoking
Nine Inch Nails--Sanctified: JM's bass riff on this one would be incredible.
Judas Priest--Touch of Evil: While no one can touch Halford, James screaming "YOU'RE POSSESSING ME!!" would be out of this would
-
Bryan Adams - "Run To You"
Billy Joel - "All For Leyna" (a fun song to let Jordan loose on)
The Beatles - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Ozzy - "Perry Mason"
Van Halen - "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)"
Journey - "Wheel In The Sky"
Megadeth - "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due"
