Title: Best covers
Post by: Jakartabassplayer on April 26, 2010, 12:55:32 PM

Metallica - Turn The Page (Bob Seger)
Motorhead - Louie Louie (Richard Berry)
Pantera - Planet Caravan (Black Sabbath)
Patti Smith - Gloria (Van Morrison)

Tool - No Quarter anyone? Other than the annoying vocal filter he uses at the beginning, Plant's was nowhere near as obfuscating.

I want people to know I'm actually being serious whenever I mention the Dixie Chicks.

Vanden Plas, Gethsemane

Frank Zappa, Stairway To Heaven - because he changes the song in interesting ways without wrecking it. He played it with a reggae feel, and the entire horn section did Page's guitar solo note-for-note.

Yay Bear McCreary! I'm watching BG right now  (only a few episodes left to watch!)

And just to contribute, I've always liked DTs cover of Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding.

A lot of great ones have been mentioned already, but I'm gonna throw out James LaBrie and Jake Lee's cover of "Red Barchetta."  Also nominating Opeth's "Soldier of Fortune" The Who's "Eyesight to the Blind," DT's "Tenement Funster" suite, and maybe some others when I think of them.

Strangely enough I saw this vid for Kalisia ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTx7vaO2RBg&feature=related ) in the related videos on the sidebar and dug it very much as my intro to them just a few minutes ago.

Definitely check it out wolfster.

That Cynic cover was quite okay IMO.  Very true to the original.  My only complaint is that the pace in the first half just seemed a bit of a drag.  It got better once the solos kicked in.  Angela surprised me, she did a great job.

Listening to that original from them.  Quite excellent.  Nice melodic guitars and that brass section brought a bit of a Faith No More influence.

The deluxe edition of this album also has a over of DT's Fortune in Lies.  I might have to check more of these guys out.

That is from the Working Men cover cd.  Both Rush cover cd's, Working Men and Subdivions are amazing.

Anyway, the all star lineup on this track is

Devin - Vocals
Matt Guillory - Keyboards
Deen Castronovo - Drums
James Murphy - Guitars
Stuart Hamm - Bass
David Townson - End guitar solo

And yes, James is an absolute monster

Another one I'd like to share is from the amazing Rush Subdivisions CD, Limelight sung by the amazing Kip Winger  :heart and Adreas from Sepultura on lead.  Also Vinnie Moore on rhythm. (why Vinnie would only be rhythm is beyond me) It's extended, added sections, very experimental (as is a lot of the songs on this wonderful cd)

Check it out, Kip's vocals are fantastic.

Thread revival!

I was going to post this in the "Your 5 Favorite Songs" thread, but being as they aren't originals performed by the original band, I figured a covers topic was at hand, and I recalled one being posted months ago so here it is!

As far as covers go, these five would probably be my favorite:
Southside Of The Sky (Spock's Beard)
The Cinema Show (The Flower Kings)
Starless (Morse/Portnoy/George)
La Villa Strangiato (Working Man - A Tribute To Rush)
Tarkus (Jordan Rudess)

Admittedly, while a couple of these may not be in my top 50 songs of all time, songs like "Southside Of The Sky" are top 20 Yes for me, so being played by one of my top 5 bands is a treat. "The Cinema Show" is definitely an all-time favorite, and the cover by TFK is wonderful. The cover of "Starless" is definitely one of the best covers the trio of Morse/Portnoy/George has recorded and IMO does the original justice. "La Villa Strangiato" is performed quite well and I actually enjoy the changed sections quite a lot, including the awesome bass solo  before the "A Lerxst In Wonderland" guitar solo section. "Tarkus" is probably my favorite ELP song, if not, then at least top 5 ELP, and I highly enjoyed JR's rendition of it on his covers album.

Here are more that I enjoy quite a lot!
Set Controls For The Heart Of The Sun (OSI)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Transatlantic)
Return Of The Giant Hogweed (Transatlantic) --- and actually anything TA covers I enjoy!
Soundchaser (Jordan Rudess)
Jacob's Ladder (Working Man - A Tribute To Rush)
And pretty much any song DT has covered, but particularly most of the songs from their BC&SL Covers disc and the 03-05 Uncovered album.

-Marc.

I actually enjoy that one too. The ending is a nice change.

Also, a friend of mines band did a cover of Mr. Crowley for an Ozzy tribute CD and I think it's the best version I have heard. Faithful, yet awesome.

Prong covered Rush "Working Man"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLrxOBriZUs

Quote
Metal greats PRONG share their cover of the RUSH classic "Working Man," which appears as a shorter version on their latest album 'State of Emergency' available on Steamhammer/SPV.
Order Link: https://prong.lnk.to/StateOfEmergency
Get the song here: https://orcd.co/prong_workingman_regu...

Commenting on PRONG's version of "Working Man," main man Tommy Victor had this to say:
“RUSH had the big riffs and that’s something PRONG always wants as well. Especially in the song 'Working Man' with that all-time classic opening riff. PRONG being a power trio also connects us to this great Canadian band, and ironically we’re going out on tour with another great Canadian band, Vöivod!”

PRONG is currently out on a co-headline tour with VÖIVOD that began February 28th in Columbus, OH, and wraps up March 24th in Stroudsburg, PA.

A good cover usually requires a good original.

My vote, Johnny Cash, Hurt.

Interesting, because three that come to mind as my favorites were not great originals:

Big Big Train - Master of Times (originally an unfinished demo by Anthony Phillips)

The Clientele - Orpheus Beach (totally different from the original, which is kind of a nondescript indie song by a band I've never heard of, but the cover is beautiful)

Peter Gabriel - The Book of Love (a similarly awful original made amazing by Peter Gabriel).

Edit: Thanks for the Allegaeon and Prong ones.  Those rock!

Chris Cornell - One (U2 with Metallica's lyrics)
Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Tangerine. BHTM has a lot of great covers, but Tangerine's where it's at.
Living Colour - Memories Can't Wait
Jack White - Mother Nature's Son/That Would Be Something - Look up the video of this one.  Performed it with McCartney and Obama literally right in front of him. Balls.
Sheryl Crow - The First Cut is the Deepest
Local H - Hackensack, When Doves Cry (both versions)  Again so many good ones
The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter
Anthrax has so many.  Some of my faves are - Lookin' Down the Barrel of a Gun, No Time This Time, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Neon Knights.  Their Kiss and Cheap Trick ones are awesome but basically just amped up versions of the originals.
Gipsy Kings - Hotel California
Les Claypool's Duo de Twang - Stayin' Alive
Dynamite Hack - Boyz-n-the-hood
Bad Wolves - Zombie
Eddie Vedder - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
Nirvana - Turnaround
Soundgarden - Girl U Want
Michael Andrews and Gary Jules - Mad World
Pearl Jam - Love Reign O'er Me
Soul Asylum - Sexual Healing
Willie Nelson - Blue Hawaii

Too many

That one is must-listening.  The original is my favorite Who tune, so there's that, but Ed really does it justice.

Also, and work with me here, the Tenacious D cover of the Beatles Abbey Road medley.

The Who - Summertime Blues
The Beach Boys - Sloop John B
Johnny Cash - Ain't No Grave; not for the song itself, but for its use as The Undertaker's Wrestlemania 27 walk-up music. It's like that version was written specifically to accompany that one man, making that entrance, on that one night.

Don't get me wrong, David's is excellent, but almost every cover of that song I've heard is better:  Oasis, Fripp, Blondie, Crimson.......

Yeah, the original Bowie version is kind of unlistenable for me.
