:hat for maudlin
Name one other song that has church organs, death growls, beautiful female vocals, and lyrics in latin, and I will give you a thousand dollars.
I will be following your career with great interest. Just a hint: any song that isn't "Thunder Road" at number one is a wrong answer.

I admit I don't understand music like Continuum, despite my extreme musical patience, understanding of minimalism and love for long songs. I had Continuum 2 and it was the first, and the only, album in my life I haven't managed to listen from start to finish.
God maudlin of the Well's 'Bath' and am listening to track 1 as we speak. I'm not used to doom-flavoured music so I'll see how it goes, but loving the intro so far.
Nice idea, gunna follow this.
I just started listing out what I would consider my 'favorite' songs, then ordered them. There are a few repeat bands on the full list, but not many; it just kind of worked out that way.
15. The Human Abstract - Vela, Together We Await the Storm:metal
16. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't it Be Nice
I never really 'got' Pet Sounds as an album like so many others seem to, but this song is brilliant. The vocal work is top-notch, the rest of the orchestration adds perfectly to the song, and a special mention to the bassline, which I would consider to be one of the basslines in rock music. Structurally it's brilliant, being short and concise yet taking the listener on a journey like every good song should.

One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite bands ever :heart (Top 5 band)
a special mention to the bassline, which I would consider to be one of the basslines in rock music.
Additionally, the chorus has some of the notes ever recorded.a special mention to the bassline, which I would consider to be one of the basslines in rock music.
Yes. It is, in fact, one of the basslines in rock music.
10. Porcupine Tree - The Start of Something Beautiful
Perhaps it's that the lyrics are something I can truly connect to, maybe it's the brilliant drumming, or beautiful instrumental section, or one of the other dozen things that set this song apart, but TSSB is simply amazing. The major highlight to me is the instrumental section the subtle acoustic/piano work, the analog synth/guitar solo that has a tone so rich it's almost a song in and of itself, the catchy guitar lead, all building into an awesome final chorus.
Great picks again, I totally forgot about The Human Abstract, thanks for getting me back into them :metal
Yeah to the Continuum 4 love, what an awesome song is that. In fact, I'm going to listen to it with a nice pair of headphones and the volume turned up right now
Great picks again, I totally forgot about The Human Abstract, thanks for getting me back into them :metal
:metal I can't wait for their third album, especially since AJ's helping write it.
GTFO Midheaven is great.
Barenaked Ladies Alcohol
9. Gregor Samsa - Lessening
Gregor Samsa has rapidly become one of my favorite bands ever since I discovered them last September, and Lessening is probably their best stand-alone song (meaning it retains its power outside of the context of its album). The soft electric piano, and miminalist guitar, and down-to-earth vocals all capture you at first, and as the song progresses you hear diminished melodies, etheral string work, and light percussion all culminating in an uphill crescendo of the full band's instrumentation. It's post rock at its finest, managing to capture the uncertain atmosphere, rising crescendos, and stark beauty such bands love without wasting time wacking off with screwdrivers and effects pedals.
Never heard of them, I'll have to check them out too then.
12. Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity
The best song off of the best album ever recorded. Everything in this song fits into the overall composition perfectly, from the crescendos of the beginning and middle, to the ethereal sections that come between them, to the psychotic hardcore ending. The alto sax solo at six minutes is one of the greatest musical moments ever, and the rest of the song is equally phenomenal. The best example of musical 'composition' I can think of, and number twelve on my list.
11. Thrice Daedalus
The song that got me into Thrice, and an absolutely incredibly song from start to finish. 7/4 and 6/4 intro is awesome, and to me is an excellent example of using off time signatures for the benefit of the song rather than to be flashy. Dustin's singing is excellent, the guitars are minimalistic but great, and the lyrics convey a vivid picture without much straightforward imagery. The instrumental section is very well done despite being short, with the guitar harmonies of particular note. And all this builds into the end, one of the most emotional parts of any song I can think of. I've always considered Thrice to be a band that had their songwriting craft honed to perfection, and Daedalus is a direct result of that.
Yep, and then Concieving You will be #2.

God that's a great song. Does Darkes hate that one too?
Sigz, you try Black Mountain yet?
I repeat for the 36395928908209409285348560934890680869284928094829580th (approximately, I may have done some mistake in calculations) time I don't hate Trains, and it's a decent song. And Conceiving You has exactly the same opinion from me.Yep, and then Concieving You will be #2.
God that's a great song. Does Darkes hate that one too?
Darkes7 hates all pop-songs made by his fav. bands. :neverusethis:Which is why I love Lazarus, Pure Narcotic and I Believe
6. Bloodbath Eaten
"7/4 DRUM PATTERN IN A POP SONG OHHHH ORGASM" aka The Sound of Muzak),
Would it be crazy to predict a Sigur Ros or Godspeed You song in 2 or 3?
1. Insane Clown Posse - Miracles
"7/4 DRUM PATTERN IN A POP SONG OHHHH ORGASM" aka The Sound of Muzak),
Actually the verse is in 7/8 with a quarter note override on the hi-hat.
Tell that to the fanboys who use that as the argument why it's so great. I'm too impatient waiting for Gravity Eyelids to care about it :P"7/4 DRUM PATTERN IN A POP SONG OHHHH ORGASM" aka The Sound of Muzak),

I'd say Gravity Eyelids is better than both Sound of Muzak and Trains.

I'd say its on par with "The Sound of Muzak." No way its better than "Trains" though.

Better don't, or you'll be accused of being a prog elitist and derailing EVERY thread. ;)
Do you expect me to hunt down and copypaste my wall of text as to why I don't like The Sound of Muzak, Shesmovedon, or Last Chance to (blahblahblah)?
Better don't, or you'll be accused of being a prog elitist and derailing EVERY thread. ;)
Well this thread's already been pretty derailed. :lol
No Mr. Sintheros, I expect you.....to die.
Storm is nowhere near my top anything list, Rockets Fall could be (I'm obviously not going to say one way or the other ;D). I really don't get the love for LYSFLATH to be honest. What a filthy post.
Sorry, Slow Riot and Yanqui UXO are both > LYSFI don't even try to compare them. F#A# might be my favourite, but everything is great. :hat
You know what? When everyone was talking about the thread derailment, I couldn't understand what they were talking about because I genuinely thought this was the Porcupine Tree thread for a few minutes :lol
I find the lack of Agalloch almost disturbing...I agree. I mean, even Falling Snow!! Such an easy song to put on, and listen the entire way through. Feels half as short as it's length. I am disapoint in Sigz for this oversight, but I can understand his taste and the fact a top 25 list will inevitably leave off some incredible stuff

Psh, no way; Time After Time is way better than She Bop.
I find the lack of Agalloch almost disturbing...
I don't think Sigz is that much of an Iain to put a SymphX song in his top 25 ever :biggrin:I find the lack of Agalloch almost disturbing...
I find the lack of Symphony X almost disturbing as well...

Plus, if im not mistaken, Sigz discovered them pretty recently?
If so, i guess its hard to compete with top25 favorite songs ever. :P
3. Steven Wilson - Collecting Space
An absolutely infectious instrumental piece. From the main guitar line to the kyoto melody to the background atmosphere, this song is wonderful. I really have to give props to all the atmospheric parts from the subtle strings in the beginning to the high gain guitar that runs in the background throughout most of the song, they add an immense amount to the overall song even though they're not something you might notice on the first listen. Finally, the e-bow and ending solo are both amazing, both because of what's being played but also the incredibly rich tone that's playing it. In the end I love pretty much everything about this song it's simple but structured well so it doesn't get repetitive, every individual section is not only good but serves to complement the whole, and perhaps most importantly it's catchy and interesting.
Sorry to come out as the "malcontent" guy again, but I never got the love for Collecting Space... :P from the bonus songs, The 78 and Port Rubicon are excellent, imo.

Collecting Space is easily the best song off of Insurgentes, bonus or otherwise.
2. Devin Townsend - Bend it Like Bender
Years ago when I first Devin with Steve Via on The Late show, it threw me off because I didn't like his vocals. Mabye I should give him another chance.
Love seeing that Devin song so high. I love it to death, too! I also listen to it almost every day, as well, as it is a mainstay on my workout playlist, and when I listen to Devin at home or in my car, that gets a lot of play. That song is just all kinds of fun. :hatThis, pretty much. Word for word.

1. Porcupine Tree - Heart Attack in a Lay By
I don't have much to say about this song, just listening to it through headphones (or surround sound if you have it) with the lyrics at hand would convey more than I could with ten thousand words. It's beautiful, it's sad, and it reaches me on a level no other song can even come near.

2. Devin Townsend - Bend it Like Bender

Whenever I think about Heartattack, I always think "What an incredible song" and then I go rank songs on IA/overall/whatever and it always winds up so far down the list and I always get mad at myself. I should look into it.
I just listened to Heartattack In A Layby for the first time. That is one of the most gorgeous and sad songs I have ever heard in my life.
I do, it was one of my least favourite songs after the first full listen of IA.SOMETIMES?! :neverusethis:
Yes, sometimes I fail.
But paint wouldn't let me open it and edit it to a useable size :(Paint for RESIZING? :omg:
Oh that reminds me, what was the album you recommended by them?Tightly Unwound.

What manner of scones, tea, and other English things happened to this thread?
Hey Sigz, random question. Do you like Explosions In The Sky?
