Forgive me if this has been asked somewhere else, but I'm a fairly new member to the board, and only a die-hard DT fan since about 2004 or so after listening to a ton of live bootlegs.
What is amazing to me is when the band goes off on to some extended jams and makes the song sound so much better. So what would you consider to be the best live version of a DT song?
For my money, it's gotta be Surrounded '07, which extends a five minute song into a 13-15 minute epic, with a killer outro that includes a derivation of Mother.
I also dug what they did with Solitary Shell on the current tour.
BTW, I think that the worst version was the ToT tour version of Beyond this Life, which I found to be quite boring.
So what do you think about some of these extended songs?
-
Hollow Years '09.
Always loved the demo version. Combined with the breathtaking solo - fantastic.
-
Hollow Years off Budokan or Surrounded off Chaos In Motion for me.
-
Hollow Years version from Budokan and which they've been playing live since, without doubt. Absolutely amazing.
Also probably songs from I&W count, as even Take The Time sounds really great live.
-
unquestionably HY budokan, for me
-
Learning to Live, from the 8VM tour.
-
There have been a bunch of great ones. "Surround '07" and "Another Hand/The Killing Hand" from 2002 jump to my mind.
Easily the worst was Beyond This Life from 2004.
-
Im gonna go with Through her eyes, LSFNY
-
Beyond This Life was awesome.

Beyond This Life was awesome.
Yeah. That one was amazing!
I gotta go with Surrounded 07. One of the few things that was genuinely "special" about those SC shows.
-
Beyond This Life was awesome.
I've never really stopped to think about it, but to be honest, this is the first one that comes to mind. I dig the song, totally, but going off into that jam was something else. While most of these extended versions feel like they're happening in the same atmosphere of the song, the BTL jam leaves this universe for some really great stuff. I get caught up in it, and forget what song they started playing to begin with (in a good way). Then when the song comes back in, I want to cheer. It totally kicks my ass.

and hollow years in Budokan too

Totally this, its my favourite extended version, 2nd comes the HY one.

The extended version of Beyond this Life from the Los Angeles show during PN 09, it was extended and included Percussive nation 09 and a tripple guitar jam with JP, Dweezil Zappa, and Steve Vai. I was there

It's my favourite too.

Hands down... To live forever from the Live in Tokyo dvd for me.
Especially for the Petrucci improv that includes The Beatles Within You Without You. They should play some obscure stuff on the club dates during the Maiden tour this year & release them all through YtseJam...
-
My favorite is Beyond this life from Live at Budokan, it's just breathtaking. And I love the dueling between Jordan and Petrucci in Metropolis, so powerful. :tup Surrounded 07 was fine, but a bit too long.
-
This isn't even close to a fair question...
Beyond This Life (L@B)
Ytse Jam (Once in a Livetime)
Hollow Years (L@B)
In the Name of God (L@B)
I LOVE the changes to A Change of Seasons on LSFNY...
That's just off the top of my head, whilst closing accounts.
-
The ending solo of Finally Free on Live Scenes was quite the pleasant surprise.

This was my vote big time I love the whole dam sone and JP goes in a trance in this one i think but , how come i never noticed the beatles improve in this? is the dvd version differant than the original VHS version ?
-
Hollow Years - LAB
Learning to Live - LSFNY
Take the Time/ Freebird
-
Beyond this life is special, but it gets boring when u listen to it too often so I think, surrounded '07, solitary shell att his tour and Hollow years at this tour
-
Budokan Hollow Years followed by Surrounded '07.
-
Hollow Years extended...one of the best concert moments ever.
-

especially special?

No, it's not.

Not Hollow Years, neither '04 nor '09.
Learning To Live from the 8VM tour for me as well.

To Live Forever from Live in Tokyo. Holy shit awesome.
Runner up: Learning to Live from the 8VM tour.

I mean, it's not like the other live extended song, it's more crazy with that keyboard and drum part and all that guitar improvising
-
I love the extended section in Another Hand/The Killing Hand. The version on Bucharest is outstanding.
-
Learning to Live with Freebird
And yes, Surrounded '07 is quite amazing.
-
Btw, sorry to be the complaining guy, but I wasn't too happy with the extended version of Solitary Shell on PN. The only point of the set when I lost interest a bit (after going crazy during ANTR/The Mirror/Lie and then slowly melting during Hollow Years). It seemed to drag too long for me...
-
Does instrumedly count? :neverusethis:
-
Learning to Live, from the 8VM tour.
Haven't heard of them doing anything special with LtL from the 8VM tour...what did they do?

There was just a really cool jam that replaced the acoustic guitar bit before the whoa's. JR had some very tasty continuum playing, and JP did a nice clean-tone solo.
I think. Haven't listened to the boot I have in a LONG time
-
Hollow Years - LAB
Learning to Live - LSFNY
Take the Time / Freebird
ABSOLUTELY THIS :metal
So unexpected; so awesome!!! Would love to have seen it live.
-
1) To Live Forever '93 in Tokyo
2) Lines in the Sand - Fix for 96 version with extended midsection and outro verse
3) Take the Time with Mists of Evening

It morphed and built, with JP and JR trading solos, until finally, right before JLB came back in with the "Whoooo"s, JR was soloing while the rest of the band played teasers from the main riffage from Cream's Crossroads and then Rush's La Villa Strangiato. Epic.
-
I listened to it again last night. JR's continuum solo was really good, probably because it wasn't an overdriven noise-fest.
-
To be a bit more specific
BTL New York TOT MSG version, that jam was not like any other (way beeter than the L@B version)
LTL San Francisco 8V tour. That jam was so spacey and cool
To Live Forever Wallingford TOT just crazy
BTL LA PN09 Percussive Nation, Dweezel Zappa, Steve Via, JP, JR jam...eargasmic
Solitary Shell Vegas PN09 pretty special
-
"To Live Forever" from Live in Tokyo.
I do like the extended "Hollow Years" but it's always bugged me that it sounds so glorious and triumphant, when it's actually a sad song. It just doesn't fit.

Sounds really epic.. I can't believe I haven't heard this yet being as LtL is my favorite by the band. Must seek it out!!

I agree, that was a great one, much better than Budokan.
-
Hollow Years from Budokan
Surrounded and Lines in the Sand from Chaos in Motion
-
I enjoy many of the selections mentioned here, but I don't recall anyone mentioning "The Spirit Carries On" from LSFNY! The impromptu coda-ending is just BONE-CHILLINGLY-AWESOME for me, and it's one of those goosebumps-moments that I'll always have when listening to it.
I also do enjoy "Hollow Years" from LAB and "Surrounded" from CIM. Also, "Metropolis" from WDADRU is very very good.
-Marc.
-
Through Her Eyes from LSFNY is awesome. The guitar solo is quite amazing.

Forgot about this. The added gospel and Theresa really made this song more majestic, and uplifting. The only problem I have is that JM didn't do his cool bassline at the end of the song like the studio version.
-
Just a thought... How great is it that the band even bother to do this each tour instead of playing the same stale set list like 99.9% of other bands do... Keeps it fun & interesting for the fans & themselves. Just one of the reasons this band is so awesome!
-
^Amen.
Who wants to see a band who always play there hits. One reason I kinda don't like festivals with popular bands cause that's all they play everytime they come here
-
Who wants to see a band who always play there hits.
Probably fans of bands with more than one hit.

Surrounded Chaos In Motion is unbelievable, the solo is just WOW.
I like BTL in Live At Budokan, I think the Jordan/Mike part is a little exageratted by I cant imagine the song without it.
I saw Hollow Years live this year and Jordanīs piano breaks and the alternative verses made it very magical as well.
Those are my top 3 extended.
-
Hard to say just one, but my favorites:
Metropolis - When Dream and Day Reunite
Lines in the Sand - Live at Bucharest
Surrounded - Chaos in Motion
Hollow Years - Live at Budokan
Peruvian Skies - Santiago, Chile
funny how a lot are from Falling Into Infinity
-
Hollow Years extended...one of the best concert moments ever.
THIS,
but,
special shoutout to the cover of Maidens "Gangland" from #OTB Live. Beautiful breakdown in middle of that amazing jazzy version.
-
Good call on Gangland, they do a really cool version of it.
